I'm confused about flashing steps from one rom to another - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,
I've flashed my phone before but it has been such a long time that I don't know If what I'm planning to do is correct. I'm running Pixel Experience with android 9, which I flashed via OrangeFox. I want to update my rom to a new one with android 10 (maybe official Lineage or new pixelexp). Can someone confirm that these are the correct steps to take, please?
1) Update OrangeFox if needed (I think I still have the latest stable release)
2) Format Data
3) Flash ROM
4) Flash Gapps if not included
5) Flash magisk
I have a couple more questions: I've read stuff about encrypted/decrypted and I don't know what that means. Is there a way to know what I'm doing, if I need any additional step to prevent loops or something? Like disabling fingerprints and pins on my phone or something?
Also, to update firmware, at which step do I do it? Is it a flashable zip too?
Sorry for so many questions. Thank you

How do I go from 5.1.1 on nexus 10 to Nougat?

I am not a programmer and have little knowledge about flashing the ROM so to make sure I understand what I need to do and the order it needs to be done.
My Nexus 10 works great still, I have not had a security update for 2 some years and am concerned about this. Last October I tried to upgrade to 6.0 but it would not recognize the new rom and I ended up going back to the original 5.1 rom.
What I need to know is how to do it in a way I can understand. I have seen a utube video of someone that has been able to do it. So I know it can be done. Just need to know how.
Thanks,
Mike B.
Assuming you have a PC use this tool to unlock then root and install a custom recovery
Next download a Nougat rom like Lineage
Also download gapps and SuperSU
Copy the rom, gapps, and supersu into a folder on your tablet
Now reboot the tablet into recovery and do a full wipe then from recovery
Flash the rom
Flash gapps
Flash SuperSu
Reboot to system and give it a few minutes on the first boot

Newb needs help rooting, unlocking Bootloader and getting a Custom ROM for ALE-L21

Hey there,
I need help, hope you have some for me . I want to use the 6.0.1. OpenKirin OmniROM on my phone and struggle even figuring out a way to get there.
I just bought a used ALE-L21 DualSIM phone with the B602 Build and EMUI 4.0.3 installed. The device is not rooted, nor has its bootloader been unlocked. The EMUI update service does not offer me any patches.
Could someone please line out to me which steps I have to take in order to root my ALE-L21 and get this ROM to work?
Disclaimer: No, I'm not just a lazy moron who does not want to read other topics on this forum - I'm a mere user with less-than-average knowledge of Android development or stuff like that. And I just can't make complete sense of the various posts I've found, since English is not my mother tongue and there seems to be a whole bunch of ways to do certain things with a phone. Well, since obviously I don't want to brick my new phone, I'm not too sure how to best puzzle together the pieces this Forum offers me. It would be insanely helpful if I could get a list that reads out something like:
1. Action - Source (for needed files, e.g.) - Result, on to step 2
2. Action - Source (for needed files, e.g.) - Result, on to step 3
3. ... and so on...
Okay, just so you see that I'm not entirely lost, I'm gonna show you the picture which is currently in my mind.
From what I understand so far, there's the following steps to get there (please rectify or rearrange steps as far as needed):
1. Update the device to Vanilla EMUI 4.1, Build B895 or B896 (I am currently downloading the B896 Build from this forum - which one is recommended? My phone is DualSIM)
2. Unlock Bootloader (What's the best way to do it? Huawei CS? Heard it's not even sure you get an answer. DCUnlocker? Wants money... Please help me clarify)
3. get TWRP 3.1.1.0 (I already have the IMG file, how do I get it to run on my phone?)
4. Root the device (I'd like to go with MAGISK, does anyone have a link for a MAGISK build confirmedly working on ALE-L21?)
5. Do some magic with TWRP (Which steps exactly?)
6. Flash the ROM Zip file via TWRP
7. Flash Gapps via TWRP
Is that about it?
As I said, please feel free to add to/adjust my list!
Thanks in advance,
Pako
If you haven't already install minimal adb tools on computer (windows) found here :
http://bit.ly/2jxX4ya
You then need to unlock bootloader using minimal adb tools and the unlock code
Unlock Code:
http://bit.ly/2z9EFhV
Unlock Bootloader Method in this thread here:
http://bit.ly/2oIASBs
After you are done unlocking the bootloader
Install twrp find that here :
http://bit.ly/2ok9BTi
There was a tool that was here somewhere to install twrp but I will link to my copy here
http://bit.ly/2ATBgRP
What you do is put the twrp image file in data folder
then change the name of the twrp file to TWRP_3.1.1-0_ALICE.img or
edit the install.bat file line data\fastboot.exe flash recovery data\TWRP_3.1.1-0_ALICE.img to the name of your twrp file
Once twrp is installed then you can pick which rom you want
The 6.0 roms arent going to be supported anymore so i suggest going for 7.0 ROM
I'm on AOSPA which is the cleanest and has good battery life
To install 7.0 rom you need B895 or B896 found here on the first post:
http://bit.ly/2jypIij
this is installed through twrp (which is accessed when Phone is off by holding volume up + power then let go once it vibrates or connect the phone to the computer and then type adb devices then adb reboot recovery in minimal adb tool)
once in twrp you need to install the B895.zip or B896.zip file then reboot your phone will boot into emui
you need to install twrp again as B895 or B896 wipes it
After installing twrp you can then install any custom rom of your choice
let the rom boot and then go back into twrp and install gapps found here: "http://bit.ly/1JOWjUqi recommend nano or even pico pick am64 7.1
I would also recommend installing Galactic forced deepsleep http://bit.ly/2ANVdbS
Hey there,
thank you very, very much for your comprehensive walkthrough! (Almost*) everything worked to perfection and I am now a happy user of OpenKirin's OmniROM 6.0.3. mod! Yeah, no 7.x... but I'd prefer to wait with that until the "issues" section of AOSPA does not contain any relevant things anymore. OmniROM seems to have no issues anymore, so I'm content with my choice. I will now follow your last advice and flash the Deep Sleep Mod to improve my device's battery life, and then I'm just happy.
* = The only issue I encountered was when having flashed TWRP, the device booted to the crappy EMUI eRecovery instead of TWRP. I solved this issue using this advice from another thread.
So, once again, thank you! All you xdaDevs, keep on developing ways to improve people's lives with their android devices!
Cheers,
Pako

[HELP] How to go back to stock —using PE and Magisk

Let me start by saying that I know there are multiple posts and comments around surrounding this topic, but I almost damaged my phone once since not all the instructions apply to everyone's situation. So I am hoping someone can help me with the details I am giving of my phone, which I want to give to my mom now and she doesn't need any fancy customizations.
I am using the Pie Pixel Experience ROM with the December security patch and also rooted with Magisk. What I need to do is be able to unroot the phone and install to it the latest available official build for the device and lock the bootloader. Also I remember when I did all the process of installing this ROM that it has two partitions (in case this affects in anything the process of going back to stock).
So if anyone could help me out with a step by step explanation (and resources) I would be truly thankful.
Flash stock pie by miflash, you find it on xda, be careful to take fastboot image pie!
Just get twrp flashable stock rom and flash it..... This will flash stock rom and as well as stock recovery on your phone... Plus you will aslo recive stock ota updates

Lineage OS 16 in Oneplus 5 - July 2019

Hi,
I bought a oneplus 5 phone because I was told it was going to be easy to install Lineage OS. I have try to install Lineage OS 16 on it for 2 days without success.
The first issue i had was installing twrp. Most of the twrp available did not worked with my phone. After flashing them with fastboot and reboot to recovery I would end up with a black screen and the the blue led turn on.
However I did find two TWPRs that work:
- twrp-3.2.1-1-cheeseburger.img
- twrp-3.2.3-0-20180822-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img
There might be other that would work, but this are the ones that I have tested.
After being able to boot to TWRP I try to flash the firmware 9.06 with success. Without reboot I flash lineage without success. I try to reboot and the system did not worked and I never reboot.
After a while I found a OxygenOS 4.5.10 that I hope is the stock rom. I has the following sha256sum: 7a8268f6a133f090a2d304aad2f92393aefbd4df34a6c2ed088909aaf7ccc2dd
That did worked and give me a breath. At least I had a working phone now. However I try to update and it did not worked.
From there I have been strugling with this project to install Lineage OS in my new phone. I know there are guides out there, but most of them did not work or are outated. There ara also threads in this forums, but are to big to try to follow. So I start this one, hopefully you can help me.
It would be great if there is a step by step guide on how to run Lineage OS in this phone.
Best,

Hello, seems that you did not follow the installation instructions within the official LineageOS thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-pie-oneplus-5-t3843064
Your issues are clearly missed or skipped steps.
Please follow the instructions there and if you get stuck, report back with detailed information :good:
Thanks a lot for your quick response. It do have an issue with that guide and it is with point 1:crying::crying:
- Make sure your phone was running OxygenOS 5.1.4 at least once

I have OxygenOS 4.5.10 and it does not upgrade to OxygenOS 5.1.4. What happened, is that in my first attempts to get this thing working I brick the phone and loose the stock firmware. Then I found this rom that allow me to use the phone (OxygenOS 5.1.4)
OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_015_all_1708252353_f05918.zip
sha256: 7a8268f6a133f090a2d304aad2f92393aefbd4df34a6c2ed088909aaf7ccc2dd
It make the phone usable, but not upgradable. I doubt is the original, but I found the link on the Oneplus forums. (I can not post links because I am too new here)
After that I search for a ROM that comes with 5.1.4 and was really happy, and try to flash. It did not work, it is like it tries to boot, but never finish booting. I wait at least for 10 minutes. This the file and the sha256 hash:
OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_037_all_1807181258_7b4b6.zip
sha256 2bb2e21a43572ac4bd2e5d1d30a3fb7562ddec280df3d452d61f58a4a8135f14
So I guess my first step would to find a way to get Oneplus 5.1.4 working. When I first try to upgrade the phone, I upgrade it from OxygenOS and it worked, however then I mess things and brick the phone. I found the rom that allow the phone to work (4.5.10), but for some reason the upgrades do not.
Thank you very much for your time.

You need to clean flash oxygenOS 5.1.4, then take ota update to 9.0.7 so you have the latest firmware.
Clean flash means that you need to wipe system, data, cache and format internal storage too.
So please backup everything off your device at first!
Everything you need you find here on xda, like the roms https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3628190

Finally I had time to work on this. The rom for 5.1.4 is: OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_037_all_1807181258_7b4b6.zip, that I already tried and never boots . With twrp it seems that the Rom is installed, with the stock recovery the installation never ends. I am going to try with other ROMS. Hopefully one of them would allow updates.
I am going to start with the newest 5.1.7, and if that does not work would keep going down.
Thanks again.

5.1.7 did not boot, however I have some progress. I installed 4.5.12, I was previously at 4.5.10, so my android setup security patch levels went from July 2017 to to September 2017. Small step forward.
I have have that hypothesis that it would work with 4.x.x versions and not with 5.x.x versions. Tomorrow I would try to flash the latest 4.x.x and the earliest 5.x.x to see when does this things stop working.
I did the tests and I can flash up to 4.5.15. I tried to flash 5.0 and that did not worked. It flashes correctly, but it never finish booting, I waited up to 10 minutes.
So there is something preventing the phone to use version 5.x.x Should I try upgrading the firmware? Other ideas?

Please give detailed steps what you did including file versions. Otherwise I cannot help further.
Every oxygenOS version has firmware built in, no need to update it seperately.
Follow this:
1 flash this recovery with fastboot like the first time https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UlTftbe6wooAs4Fp0cjwXlOKmfQHgdfL/view?usp=drivesdk
2 boot the new twrp recovery
3 flash magisk 18.1 to make twrp stick
4 FORMAT internal storage(not wipe only) and wipe system and data partition
5 transfer oxygenOS 5.1.4 to the phone and flash it
6 boot oxygenOS 5.1.4 and take ota update to tg and latest OxygenOS(9.0.7 actually.
7 now you're on the latest OxygenOS and firmware version
Thank you very much, now I am with LineageOS

Please help me with an OTA update

Hi everyone. I'm new here on XDA and this is my first post so if I'm doing this wrong, please let me know below or provide a link if my problem has already been solved, thank you.
I have an s8+(SM-G955F, dream2ltexx/dream2lte), running 9.0.0. I have both, TWRP(3.3.1) and Magisk(latest) + edxposed(for what is worth). I am also running a custom kernel A2N. I received a week ago an OTA update and I would like to apply it. This is my first ever OTA update on a rooted device so I read a ton of posts and tutorials in the past few days, also backed up everything using TWRP. From what I understood(and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or show a better solution) I need to first install the default recovery image, lose TWRP, unroot, do the OTA and after that, reinstall TWRP and Magisk(I think I also need to return to stock kernel, not sure).
Important: I would very much like to not factory reset my phone if this is possible.
Now, I have a few questions:
1. Where can I get my default recovery.img ? (I tried to find it on https://desktop.firmware.mobi/device:468 but they don't have anything for android 9)
2. Do I also need to get and install my default kernel ? If so, where can I also get it ?
2. After I flash the recovery.img what is the best thing to do with Magisk ? (completly uninstall or just restore image ?)
3. After everything is done, will flashing TWRP require to remount the partitions ?(because that will also mean I have to factory reset at some point)
4. It would also be super helpful if you could provide me a link from where I can download OTA updates as zip files(if there exist such a place). The version that I need is: G955FXXS8DTC1
I cannot thank you enough for everything and sorry for the long post
Hope you have a safe, beautiful day !
P.S. I already tried to do the OTA update after backup. It tried to flash it throw TWRP and, of course, it failed(error: 7)
