Are there still display issues in the latest OP8 pros? - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi, I'm currently in the market for a phone, and the 8 pro is one of the phones I've narrowed it down to. I've never used OnePlus phones before, but I've heard great things about their software so I've decided to see for myself.
Only issue is, there seems to be a lot of complaints about defective screens on the phones, and I just wanted to know if they're still selling defective units or if the problem is fixed and they're selling normal ones now. I live in India so if anyone could help me out on the situation here that would be great.
Also I'm doubtful about the battery life. I'm a very heavy user so I don't know if the battery can keep up with me for a whole day, as I plan to keep the phone at 120Hz QHD all the time if I do buy it.

Hardware issue that cant be fixed. It existed since OP7T but oneplus doesnt give a f**k. I dont expect them to fix even on the upcoming OP8T series. You gotta live with it.

The Green Tinge exists. Maybe OxygenOS 11 will solve it , but not keeping my hopes up. The issue isn't that widespread though. It shows when brightness is at a particular 20%-25% range and the screen is a dark-grey or similar shade and isn't visible below or above that.
Having said that, the burn-in issue and banding of the status bar area some users were seeing in early units seems to have been resolved. But all in all, it still can't hold a candle to the level of screen optimization Samsung does. My 5 year old Galaxy S6 has much better out of the box calibration and white balance than my current Op8 Pro. It's what it is.

Be careful of responses on threads like this, although I'm sympathetic to end users who've got a dodgy unit, the vast majority of people do not have this issue.
I ordered one device and i have zero issues, no screen problems at all, even before the brightness got lowered, no overheating issues, nothing.
Most people don't, but a thread like this just gives everyone with a problem a platform to voice their opinion and who will all say something negative (which you have to expect), most people who don't have this issue will be less likely to report on this thread so you will end up with an unclear and biased set of responses.
As with any phone, if you get a device and it has an issue, you have two years warranty for a reason, use it.
If you're paying cash then I'd advise to get it from Amazon, they don't argue and will simply swap out the device.
To put this all into perspective, I've had more phones than the vast majority of people who come on xda, usually 1-2 phones per year since the G1 days, I've had issues on 1 device and that was after 4 years and my daughter was using it at the time, that was the HTC hero. I haven't had screen issues since on any phone before or since.
For every person with an issue with their screen or indeed any part of any device; there is a multitude of people who do not.
As for battery life, I get 8-9 hours SOT most days and have achieved 10 hours, it's worth noting that although I keep my phone in good condition, no charging overnight, no ad supported apps or bloat, im not actively trying to achieve high SOT scores, im just using the phone.
Most recently I was testing games on most emulators throughout the day and within 11 hours of charge the screen was on for 9 hours and 9 minutes, there was 10% left, screenshots and app usage in the screen on time section in the real life review section of this forum, this was at pure stock.. 5G off (using 4G and FHD instead of QHD no difference)
I've just flashed xXx No Limits so I am expecting that number to rise.
Bottom line is to find out for yourself though, each of us have different habits and needs, but in regards to screen uniformity it's a roll of the dice, but the odds are definitely in your favour.

Buying A Samsung Product

I have had every GSM android phone Available in the USA, as well as the Rogers Magic from Canada & European HTC Hero.
HTC has been Extremely amazing with their products and if any issues, they were very helpful.
Ive Read more bad things about Samsung products than good such as electronics dying a few months of being purchased brand new and their support being the worst.... I am a little shaky to buy the phone due to people commenting feeling like straight up plastic. and also because i would be pretty pissed for it to die just a couple weeks, or months from purchase date.
Anyone Experience anything wrong with their phones so far? Hardware Related???? Now Samsung also sucks with Updates and Promises, Just look at the behold. Seriously!!!!!!!! --- Flame, flag, discuss, be of use, do your thing-----
The various radios and their ability to hold a strong signal when touched by your hand is definitely a concern. Indoors, 3G reception with this device is extremely unreliable. I fluctuate from having full signal strength (not just going off of 'bars'), to EDGE, to dropped calls. I've had calls go straight to voicemail, while the phone is sitting on a desk, where other phones did not have this issue.
Outside, depending on how 'obstructed' I am, it's a bit difficult to drop. But if I walk between two houses, 3G signal is screwed. Blame it on the frequency of T-Mo's network, I guess; but I have used 3G phones on the network which have never suffered from these problems. A co-worker of mine uses a cheapo 'MyTouch 3G', which outperforms my $500 phone in terms of 3G strength and GPS-locking. Really sad.
The screen is incredible. The best in the industry, if you ask me. The pixel density isn't as crazy as the iPhone 4's, but the colors are unmatched. Watching videos on this screen is like sitting in front of a tiny Plasma TV. Speaker quality is actually quite decent, to boot. Sounds about as good as the speakers on a MacBook Pro.
The build quality is solid, for what it is. That said, it still feels like a toy, and is probably built from cheap plastic to keep the costs down (the screen probably costs a fortune). I would've preferred a heavier, metal-body phone.
The buttons, unfortunately, feel very cheap. My biggest concern is that the power button might fail some day. The headphone jack is cheap. In fact, my first headphone jack was non-functional, and would constantly short out.
Despite all of those hiccups, I still really like the device.
Samsung's support is not the greatest, which is why I worry in the first place. In 2003, I bought one of the last CRT HDTVs. It was an issue of 'spend $1k for CRT or spend $3k+ for LCD'. I was broke, and in school, so I went with the CRT. After a year of mild usage, the board inside of the TV died, and I could only view snow-laden black and white images. The TV was covered by the extended warranty I bought through the store. A year later, on the dot, it died again. And the next year, again. Eventually, I grew tired of spending money on warranties, and let it lapse. Sure enough, the TV died again. From that point on, I was skeptical of Samsung's QA. They wanted to charge me the cost of the TV to repair it. Needless to say, the set was junked, and I wasn't happy.
I still don't like their build-quality. I think Samsung cheaps out, even on their larger sets. Everything is thin, glossy plastic. But one thing is for certain: Samsung knows how to build a panel -- the best panels in the industry, if you ask me.

Galaxy s is samsung's flagship product it's being launched globally, I don't think they are in position to let it die as behold. But it's my own opinion though.

I would just like to add my 2 cents as far as battery issues.
1. I use task killer to disable unused apps and free up ram/cache info and save on a little battery power
2. i setup the brightness manually to be low and the phone is still very bright. The phone on average uses 80-90% of its power from this alone so it is VERY important to manage. I used it auto on the first day and the phone lasted me about 12 hours. Once i set it up manually i got about 14-15. For example 8am-11PM. With lots of use. The phone battery seems very realistic to use in a single day..but more than 20 hours i would say you would have to have moderate to low usage..i would say i have high usage..1st day i had it with a full charge

100+texts
20 app downloads
30 min of web browsing
30 min of phone calls
50% total time using WIFI
40% with 3g
the rest just browsing on the phone setting up emails and such

Update: 07/21/10
Today is the second day i use the phone fully and using it for just about the same amount my battery is only about 47% compared to 30ish% the day before..last night it crapped out at around 1145 with 5% energy..its 8pm now and im at 47%..so far i have charged it fully 3 times..i expect 2-4 more charges and im gonna get a max time of about 15-18 hours of hard use..LOVE THIS PHONE!!

Worst Device Ive Ever Owned (Returned)

This is my opinion. I'm a long time Android user.
I purchased this device with the excitement of it being a mixture of my 2 favorite interfaces.
The phone itself is nice looking. The screen is curved leaving it difficult to install a screen protector.
The back is extremely 'grippy' but feels loose towards the middle.
The software is buggy and i think they should have definately spent more time with it. Had a couple of random reboots and freezes within the 1st day.
The phone was randomly getting hot to touch, even after i stopped running background app's, and when it was doing this the battery life would drop quick, very quick.....
The phone does get warm fast, no matter what other people tell you. Simply browsing chrome or facebook i could feel the heat within 3-4 minutes.
The battery life i experienced was abysmal! After 5 charging cycles it didnt get any better, i averaged just on 3.5 hrs screen on time, for a 3400mah battery thats pretty bad. Especially for a so called business device thats even worse.
The sound through the bottom speaker grill was average.
The only thing i thought was realy good was the actual phone calls, sound was loud and clear.
The price of this phone is absolutely ridiculous!!! Its not worth what there asking.
The phone is a big let down for me. I was shocked.
If you want true blackberry, save your money and get a Passport.

Just about everyone reported good battery life with this thing. Ya sure you weren't running a lot of junk apps in the background?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not buying it. The keyboard is trash. But still.
Did you update anything? For some reason the Blackberry apps don't say they need updates, you have to visit their store page and update there. Also, unlinking and relinking your email account in the hub may help with your heat issues. There's also the chance you just got a lemon.
I updated all my apps i made sure i had nothing running in the background. Im pretty good with Android. No my way round somewhat.
If you get one just make sure you have the ability to return it easily enough.
I returned mine to the store and got a LG G4 instead which is an unbelievably good phone.

I have 0 battery issues. yes it gets warm, but that's probably as much as my oneplus 2. I'm easily getting 5 - 6hrs SOT over 18 hrs.
So far i am liking this device. I have an s6 edge, passport original (sold now), passport silver, which is the only device i have ever went back to after getting rid of. Now a Priv. So after getting it all set up with gmail, hub, twitter, facebook, corporate email, and some other random apps and charged up to 100% i went to bed with it unplugged. Woke up 7 hours later battery was at 96. Not bad for overnight. The productivity edge compared to the people edge on the s6 is a grand slam, its almost like having google now launcher after all primed up. Double tap to wake is flawless so far. I must say i am impressed. being able to hotkey all the keyboard keys just like my passport is great. I have not seen a single glitch yet. This device, for launchday software on a new platform for Blackberry is quite polished. I am not a blackberry loyalist by any means, but the subtle customizations and natively being able to set the flashing LED colour to different alerts is all baked in. I think im going to sell my Edge.

The G4 is a great phone. I want to try the Priv but can't justify dropping my G4 for it!

Totally disagree with OP. My experience is very different. Great business device with good replication of the best of BB10.
Aside from the heating thing, everything else seems to be your device only. You might have gotten a faulty device.
I've been using the Priv for a week now, neither a single random reboot nor a freeze happened. The phone is fluid, and no lags. It does get warm quite quickly, but not to the extent you're describing here ("hot to touch"). It gets as warm as other devices, but quicker.
I wouldn't go as far as returning the device only for these issues, I'd get it replaced instead. But then again, that's just me, and I have been excited about it since its rumours and renders. If you weren't excited about it, or just looking for a "new device" to test, I'd understand why you were eager to return it.
I also wasn't pleased with the battery life. I own a moto x play, has a 3,600 mah battery, I average 6.5- 7 hrs screen on time, the priv have me about 3hrs with a similar size battery??!!
Mine is back in the box ready to be returned also same issue. So hot almost too hot to touch. Constant fc on chrome and hanging battery life absolute ****e and worst of all how the sharp corner sticks into your hand on obe handed use. ..so disappointed as I was waiting since release day..total pants if you ask me
Heat issues may be dependent upon your network as I found in the UK that on EE very little warming but a bit more warming on Vodafone.

I'm actually pretty happy with the priv - mine only gets slightly warm under load, doesn't randomly reboot or crash, the screen doesn't click, the front and rear cameras both work flawlessly...
however, I'm on the verge of returning it due to the physical keyboard. People complain that it's cramped and small, but I have no issue with that either. My main issue is that it drops keys randomly and can't keep up with the typing - it happens most frequently when typing double letters ("google" -> "gogle", or "good"->"god"), but it also randomly drops keys elsewhere too. I'm pretty sure it's not me as I intentionally type very deliberately to see, and I hear/feel the key click down - but nothing registers on the screen.
For a company that built its reputation on having the best in class keyboard... this is pretty disappointing.

If this is the case what a major flaw, if your on a certain network you could potentially Cook an egg on the back of your priv with the heat!!
Give it a couple of full drain/charge cycles and you'll be fine. Software is a bit buggy yes. But since this such an important phone for BB, you can be assured constant software updates will make this into a monster.
Give it a real chance before you dismiss it.

Got a note 5, thinking of returning for nexus 6p (read please)

Well here's the drill. I'm coming from a oneplus one with outstanding battery life and Ive had the note for a day now, battery life has sucked so much, so so much and it even lags sometimes, I can literally see the percentage dropping. Every site I check rates note 5 higher for battery life than note 5, which seems odd to me, and I don't know what to do, should I get the nexus 6p or keep this phone and learn to live with it? Is the oneplus one from outer space for that battery life?
You might get some biased answers here since this is a 6p forum but I'd check the battery stats first, see what's causing that drain. Some phones require a few charges to optimize the battery too. Finally, it could just be a faulty model
I researched the Note 5 real hard between trying out an iPhone 6S+ and buying a 6P. I was coming from an S5 and the wife has a Note 3, which we both like quite a bit. Her Note is actually what got me wanting a bigger screen than my S5. But I did read a lot of complaints about the Note 5 battery life (and the glass backs cracking, even saw a display model at Best Buy with a busted back glass). And being I'm Verizon with no chance to root a Note 5, I opted for the 6P. Battery life has been very good with a few tweaks. Browse through the threads here to find what works. And you don't have to go nuts with the tweaks. For me, just running a custom Kernel, using Greenify for a few apps and not installing GasBuddy were all that was needed.
The Nexus 6P is a great device from a software point of view (= guaranteed updates, no Knox or other nasty stuff ) but not very durable from a mechanical point of view. You really have to take care when using this phone because the Aluminum body is weak and prone to warping or bending. That´s the only downside of this device..
I would say if you're looking to switch because of battery life you likely won't find find much relief by switching to the Nexus 6P. Most new high end phones are clocking in 4-6 hours of screen on time. The Oneplus One may have provided you better battery life due to the lower resolution screen, older (probably less power hungry) processor, and tweaks that were part of CyanogenMod. What kind of screen on time are you getting between the Oneplus One and Note 5?
In terms of performance, I haven't seen a single issue with the Nexus 6P, but screen on time maxes out for me around 4-5 hours. The standby time has been much improved in Marshmallow, but that update should be seen soon-ish on the Note 5.
I've found myself in the same boat, the Note is pretty damn good but there are some software issues such as the memory management, bloat and most of all 32gb not being close to enough HD space. Is the warp thing really an issue? I've not heard of anything regarding it.

Yes, it is an issue. I'd be willing to say that almost every device will suffer from it (even if the owner does not realise) mine warped after a day in a case.

Yes, just read through the 'bent after 2 days' thread and that certainly sound worrying. Really wanted to switch over with the annoyances of the Note lately. Is it enough to warrant not switching or something to 'live with'?
You won't notice it honestly, I just make sure I don't sit on it or anything. The phone itself is a lot better than the note 5. Worth the buy if you're careful

If I have any kind of warping on my Nexus 6P I can't see it. The only time warping might be bothersome is if you want to use a tempered glass screen protector, as it will peel away from the display.
Regardless, if you already have a current generation high end Android, you're probaly better off waiting for the next generation. Unless you really got money to burn!
I had the Note 5 before upgrading to the 6P. I am much happier with the 6P, it's better in every way IMO with the exception of the Note 5 having a bit better camera.
I had a OPO and loved the battery life, I went to the N6 and then the N6P and wouldn't even think of any other phone at this point. If you enjoy tweaking, the 6P is the phone for you. Running Cataclysm rom + ElementalX + Pay and V4A, I get between 5-6 hours of SOT, but more importantly for me, I'm usually around 30-40% after my long work day.
I've not had a single issue with any bend or warp. I always put a tempered screen protector on and a very minimal case. I would imagine any thin, larger phone will bend if in your rear pocket if sat on, the IPhone6+ had a similar "issue".

Lucky the note still has good resale value here! Can sell it and pick up a 64gb Nexus for the same price off Gumtree.

I don't think so, but I don't carry my phone in my pocket. I use a NiteIze belt carrier. It did make me opt for getting the phone straight from Google though, so I could get the Google Protect program on it. Cost me a little more to get it that way, but good peace of mind since all the feedback I've read about using that program has been very good.

So far battery life has been excellent for me. I uploaded this for another thread but it may help answer your questions. I should mention that since the last full charge I have not been playing games or streaming video, which might have move the drop-off point up a few hours.
I am sure you can see, there are a bunch of 6P owners complaining about battery life also. My opinion is biased but my 6P seems great with all the stuffs on so far. I would recommend going a full day with location services turned off, google now fully turned off, to see how much drain there is. I came from a Note 4 and that got pretty good battery life with location services off and google now off. I manually turned the GPS on and off when I needed it. Also try removing/disabling as much Samsung and carrier bloatware as possible.

A brief comparison of popular phones

I had a Droid Turbo for 1.5 years that got great battery life. I am a power user, and averaged between 4 and 4.5 hrs of SOT in a 16 hour day.
For no good reason, I decided it was time to get a new phone, and I chose the S7e SD 820 model based on the reviews. While the phone is pretty, there were two dealbreakers for me. First, the Edge screen is too sensitive given the way I hold a phone, even when using a case. I'd constantly open apps on the left side of the screen by accident. Or worse, make weird typos in emails. The second, and bigger issue, is mentioned ad nauseum on this forum - the US version has major Android System battery drain that has not been addressed. I spent hours and hours trying to get in touch with someone who could help me at Samsung. I was promised callbacks, fixes, etc.. But when there was no follow through and I'd call back, they acted like nobody had ever reported the problem before. I then tried tweeting Samsung support, and they responded... By telling me that their customer service dept on Twitter has absolutely no way to contact someone who can solve the android system issue. Finally, after calling several times, I got in touch w a US based tier 2 tech support agent, who also told me the issue had never been reported. He had an S7 on hand, picked it up, and noted that there was definitely a problem. He put in a ticket but said it wouldn't be addressed until enough people complained to trip their system. Given the challenges of dealing w Samsung, and my big priority of having a long lasting battery, I finally gave up hope and returned my s7e to Verizon. This is the first time in 20 years of cell phones that I've ever made a return.
I wanted my Droid Turbo back, but unfortunately, I turned that in when I got the S7e. So, I decided to get a DT2. I'd call it a fine phone. Nothing special that differentiated it from the original for me. In fact, battery life for me averaged about 3.5-4 hrs SOT, less than the original. If I'm going to spend $700 on a new phone it has to be significantly better than my previous one in the category that's most important to me, which is battery life. I don't watch much video on my phone, but I definitely use apps intermittently throughout the day, including FB, Instagram, Bumble, TouchDown and Feedly. Since those don't need anything special in terms of graphics, my only goal was to get more device use time than the DT. Since that wasn't happening, I've now purchased a Nexus 6p.
From reading the forums, it sounds like Google is much more responsive to issues because this phone is running stock Android. While the processor is a generation dated from the S7e, I do appreciate that Google will update much faster than Samsung, who barely acknowledged a battery issue affecting 100% of US phones. I've now installed everything on my 6p, and am in the middle of testing it for "normal use" (meaning, how I use the phone, which may or may not reflect the norm). If this phone doesn't get better battery life than the DT, then I'm going to return it, call it a day, and purchase another DT on ebay.
I'm sure for many of you screen pixels, camera and processor speed matter, but I don't watch much video, find almost all cell phone cameras provide pixelated photos, particularly in low light, and I never had any issue opening FB or emails at warp speed on my Turbo. I can't justify getting equal or less battery life for a phone that costs $500 more than the original DT.
Anyway, I'll give an update once I've had a few days with my 6p, but feel free to post your experiences if you've had any of these devices.
You should be able to get at least 6 to 8 hours SOT with the SD820 Edge, just look at this threat and try it. Despite your bad experience so far this S7 should easily obliterate your DT and 6p. It's just a shame 800 bucks doesn't work great straight out of the box like most Exynos do and how it should be. But even Exynos isn't perfect, e.g. my standby drain is slowly creeping upwards from 2% per night on the first day till 4% now, 2 weeks later. Without ever changing a setting. Not complaining though This phone has potential like no other phone in market does at this point in time.
I'd strongly doubt that any phone could average 6+ hrs of SoT unless you're on wifi and using the screen continuously. But again, everyone uses their phones differently. For me, it was the terrible Samsung support that made me throw in the towel. I agree that the phone has potential, but potential is just that. If the people responsible for updating the phone don't pay attention to their customers than the phone will never improve beyond its potential.

S7 edge same battery defect as Note 7?

I noticed that there have now been reports of the S7 and S7 edge exploding in the same way the note 7 has even giving a guy 3rd degree burns. This got me thinking about the two s7 edges I've had and the quality control issues that may be plaguing our devices as well. My first s7 edge had great battery life, 6 hrs+ SOT, and ran cool all day. I then returned it because a better promo came out within 14 days of my purchase and got a new one. The new one has never made it past 3.5 hrs of SOT and runs hot all the time. This is with the exact same apps installed, the same settings, and initially the same firmware. I've tried running 100% stock, FDR's, freezing apps, rooting, and tweaking just about everything with little to no success which makes me wonder if this is a hardware related issue with the battery. Maybe this explains how some people are getting 8 hrs of SOT while others cant make it past 3. It's a definite possibility in my mind that we have the same or similar manufacturing defect in the s7 edge as the note 7.

I've never gotten anywhere near that much screen on time. Mine's more in the 3 hours range maximum. If the screen is off, my battery seems to decently, but I've never seen the crazy high numbers that many others have.
My SOT is rather high, but I only experienced battery issues after rooting the first time with the 935V kernel. After moving to 935U, I went back to VERY cool CPU & Batteries, and better SOT.

Try turning off all of the Amazon crap if you don't use it. They tend to use up a lot of battery time when they are running in the back ground, and by default they are installed and set to run always. That might help a little bit.

Google any device and you'll find cases of a few burning. That's just the state of LiPo technology at the moment.
The Note 7 has had upwards of 30 cases in a very short period of time, and a known quality issue from a particular manufacturing partner. What you'll find with the S7/S7E is nothing near that severe, and on par with contemporary devices like the iPhone 6/6s.
Update: I called Samsung and I'm not even kidding here's how the first part of the conversation went:
Me: Hi I have a galaxy s7 edge and I'm a little concerned because it is draining quickly and the phone runs very warm and sometimes hot.
Agent: That is not good! Are you hurt?
Me: No I'm okay
Agent: Thank god! Please power the phone down and send it to us. We will fix it or send you a replacement within 5-7 days. What is your imei number and email address?
I got an email within 5 min with a return authorization and then called verizon because I don't want to be without a phone for 5 days. I told them the story and they are sending me a replacement and I just have to send the old phone in. Either Samsung is being super cautious or they know there might be an issue with our phones as well. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing if the replacement is any better. I saw that a couple of people have reported getting referb phones that run cooler/better.

i believe theyre over 90 now lol.. i doubt theres a defect in the S7/S7E, ppl are just wary now after the N7 recall even though unless you do anything crazy theresasmaller chance of it atually exploding..
i actually take my phone off the charger for a few mins if i feel it burning up lol
My phone has been doing this. Getting super hot and the battery goes from 100% to 0 in 2-3 hours. I'm gonna call them

If I remember correctly they had a factory issue and had to outsource like 10% of the note7 batteries to a different company. They didn't do that with the s7e to my knowledge so if there is an issue it's probably not related to the note7 issue.
I had this issue earlier this week.....phone wouldn't even last a normal 9 hour shift at work and I was down to under 15% by my lunch break. Lost my mind going back to stock and reflashed stang Rom 3 times...the third time I forgot to install greenify and the problem was solved. Reinstalled greenify and my battery drained like it was a countdown clock. Went back stock, reflashed and didn't bother with greenify, just rolling with forcedoze and have 0 issues. Currently at 32% and I've been off the charger for close to 12hours and even had to use my flahsight for a solid 10minutes
My original Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge ended up literally melting all USB cables and chargers that I plugged into it. This was roughly after 4 months of owning the device, it always got really hot while charging, but one day it started smelling like burning plastic. I successfully got a warranty replacement on that device, my current S7 Edge still gets hot after charging, but nowhere near the original device.
I would venture to assume that 'fast-charging' is the culprit behind overheating, as you are pushing 2 Amps to the battery (compared to your usual 700mAh - 1 Amp standard USB charger).
As the Doctor stated -- you will always have SOME defects in a very small percentage of devices. As the S7 Edge has been out longer, I would say we are okay
