What custom rom has the best network connectivity? - Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Questions & Answers

Hi,
The network connectivity on stock rom is definitely very good, especially when you are moving from place to place(i.e not sitting at one place all the time which has decent connectivity). The data/voice connectivity, making best use of dual sim etc etc are very good. I guess Asus is sacrificing battery to achieve that(there is a relatively high standby drain on stock rom), but I think it is worth it. But, the custom roms I used so far did not appear to be on par with stock rom in this area(but the battery life is pretty good though).
So, any custom roms with good network connectivity? (preferably with dual 4g/volte), I prefer not to root and depend upon external kernels/modules though. I keep missing OTPs(or delayed OTPs), poor voice and data connectivity, WIFI voice calling is not that good either. I was hoping I don't have to switch back to stock rom.
Thanks in advance.

For pie I would suggest LOS 16 and for Q try PixelExperience rom.
These both are decent and stable roms with no bugs and stock experience. Minimal roms with no customisation.

Thank you. Tried Los 16(official), did not appear to have good connectivity(I think it is still in initial phase, might get better with time, I'll give it a try again). I have yet to try PixelExperience Q.

I just realized that there is this rom called - stockrom mod. I believe it is developed on top of stock rom, not sure, but I'll give it a try.

Yeah, that's the stock rom with some tweaks. You might find it usefull.

I have not noticed any significant difference in network connectivity and speed. The signal bar in Los pie may may give you a false impression of low signal strength. If you check under sim status its pretty much same with all. And yes i am saying this after using stock rom, Los pie abd pixel experience Q.

Okay, the problem appears to be in stock rom too (I think it is pie only, i think it was fine in oreo), you can find several posts in zentalk forums too complaining same apparently, asus doesn't give a damn. I confirmed there is something wrong with either device (hardware) or software (All pie roms), by switching sim cards to different phones. They all showed no problems.
There is a remedy for this - lock the lte bands., it works!!, at least for most of the cases, i myself saw the effect immediately. I use dual Sim (airtel and jio).
But you need to root the device. Root your device snd install network signal guru. Click "lock bands" from settings, click lte, you'll see bunch of bands - B1, B3, B5.... Find the bands your data sim runs on (you can use this link - https://www.datareign.com/4g-circles-in-india.html/amp), by trial and error find the bands which give you better speed/reliability.
I use below configuration for good data reliability (to play pubg) and moderate speed on data sim(jio) , without having to loose call connectivity on airtel sim (I use it for calls and secondary data)
B5(jio), B1, B8(airtel)
I am not exactly on reasoning behind this, but I just tried not use bands which are common for both Sims, i think that is why i kept loosing call connectivity on airtel sim. A common band might have given good data on one sim but ended up giving bad call connectivity on the other, and vice versa.

[Q] Does wifi capability change with ROMs

Hi
I have just move from a stock to custom ROM and notice my wifi reception seems weaker. Is this just by chance or, despite obviously having the hardware, do radio/wifi capabilities vary between ROMs? If so?
Thanks Jim

hi most of the time when flashing new roms i flash my original modem/radio that was shipped with the phone. but to answer your qusstion different roms may come with different modems that may increase signal or decrease signal as they are split up into regional areas however what works best for some may not work for you its all about trial and error.
if you dont remember what baseband your had just call your phone providor they will tell you

Thanks for that clarification. With many stock and custom ROMs now packaged as a single file, choosing the part you want keep and the part you want to replace may be harder. However, I hadn't realised that is was even possible to "mix and match" in that way. Makes absolute sense on reflection. Cheers.

[Q] Custom Roms with WiFi Calling

Hey guys. So I've noticed that there don't seem to be any Roms available for tmo g2 that include WiFi calling. I really loved Cloudy's G3 rom; It looked absolutely beautiful. Thing is, It doesn't have WiFi calling and I can't go without it as there is no signal in my office. Is there a way to side load the feature after the rom is installed? Can devs possibly include this as an option in aroma? Any help would be great.

does stock rom have wifi calling? and isn;t it carrier specific ?
If it is in stock rom then there a very real chance it could get ported.

Yes, WiFi calling is a T-Mobile feature in most of their phones. I can make calls and send sms messages without any additional software or configuration as long as I am connected to wifi. It's a very nice feature and one I don't think would be hard to port. I know the CloudyG3 rom has T-Mobile option in Aroma so it could just be included in the system install for that option. I just don't really know what files are dependent on that part of the system. I'm sure a lot of T-Mobile G2 owners would love to flash some quality roms if they could keep their WiFi calling ability.
+1 Using G3 ROM for the looks and performance. But I need wifi calling. I dont use much but at times I need that feature.
Even Cloudy stock wont support it.
Energy Rom is the only custom Rom that supports it - it is based on stock jellybean though.

About "robotic voice issue"

Hey all,
some of us suffer from the robotic voice issue and the discussion in the dev forums gets out of control, so I decided to open an own thread for this topic.
I hope this will reduce the off-topic talk in the ROM threads (which is against xda rules by the way ). Also this will maybe help the devs to find a solution eventually as they dont have to search through the 500pages in the dev forum to find any useful comments on the topic.
Further I would like to share how to live with the problem
For many users this issue is a dealbreaker for using a ROM. I personally adapted to it as those ROMs/builds without the issue are extremely poor when it comes to performance and especially battery life for me. The current version of the device tree massively improves those too aspects at cost of bringing the robotic voice issue, which is good so, as the issue only affects a few and it can be easily worked-around.
What you can do to work-around the issue:
turn network mode to 2G
Go to Settings => Cellular networks => Preferred network type => 2G
Of course this means that your mobile internet will be way slower. All background service will run without any problems. Only when you for example stream music or videos online or maybe want to use the browser (in fact, therefore it wouldnt even really be necessary) you would have to switch to 3G/4G.
I have the robotic voice issue on every outgoing call when on 3G/4G and never had the problem on 2G. So this is a very stable workaround :good:
Also I have found an app called "Toggle Network Type 5.0" PlayStore - xda
It requires root but using a custom ROM that shouldnt be a deal-breaker. With this app, you can create an widget that toggles between network modes that you can select. So for example to toggle between 2G and 3G/4G
That means it is only one tap on a widget from ready to take a call to highspeed mobile internet :fingers-crossed:
use dual-boot
I'mTheMr released a dualboot app for our device G800F xda-thread. I am using it quite a while now and never had any problems with it. The ROMs are installed to internal storage. Having a device with 12gb internal storage this is absolutely no problem. You can access files, photos etc. from all ROMs.
So you have one ROM (works with rooted stock ROM as well!!!) that you can rely on, say your work partition and when you want to use a custom ROM with all its fancy features and the robotic voice issue is atm no deal-breaker you just choose your secondary in the app and reboot =)
I really hope that one of the devs will take a deeper look into that issue sooner or later. I can put up with it, but getting rid of this problem once and for all would of course be way nicer.
What we know about the issue (or think to know :silly: ):
As I said before it is connected to the latest changes in the device tree by hennymcc, which switched the phone libs. Considering that it doesnt appear on 2G, one can assume that it is the part that controls the mobile data / voLTE. That also means that basically every new ROM has the same bug because they all share hennymcc's device tree.
The ROMs that have the robotic voice issue are:
CM 13 (there are builds that dont have it, but I am speaking of the latest build)
Resurrection Remix
Tesla
PAC-ROM 5
ROMs that dont have the robotic voice issue:
Bliss ROM (latest build used the older version of device tree)
CM 12.1
I have this issue with every outgoing call others only calling specific numbers/providers and most of the users dont have the problem at all. So, it could be related to the provider one uses or more precisely the frequencies your provider uses.
And thats about all information I can provide to the topic. Feel free to add things that I forgot to mention or just dont know and when someone wants to have any specific logs just tell what you need and I am sure there will come a lot then I will of course add a call log with and without robotic voice (2g/3g) but probably not today.
PS: Please excuse the noob language used here and there, I am obviously no dev

[QUESTION] What affects the phone signal?

Hi! I have the US 4GB 64GB version of Moto G5 Plus which is not avaiable here in Brazil.
Gonna try to be clear... but sorry for my bad english...
The fact is that I was on debloated Nougat (bootloader unlocked and rooted) and was experiencing very poor signal in several situations... the most notable was when I was on the subway and since this phone is veeeeery popular here I could see a lot of people using this phone, browsing, facebook, instagram etc. but, even though the network signal in status bar was full or almost full for me, it was like I had no data at all..
I then upgraded to Oreo Soak Test #3 yesterday and today I noticed that now in the subway, I have no data at all, there is no 4g/3g symbol next to the signal symbol...
So the question... what affects the phone signal? What can I do to solve this issue?
Oh, my carrier is maybe the best in my region when it comes to coverage
Thanks in advance!
EFS affects Signal, and IMEI
Hello,
You know English well (comparing to my bad English).
Loss of Network (Data), and IMEI is caused by deleted EFS.
EFS is deleted in the process of Installion of some custom roms (including stock rom).
Rostoring EFS on Oreo soak test won't work for several reasons (for me it only worked on Nougat).
Restore Process:
Must Have:
1. Andorid 7.0 Stock Rom (Fastboot) (Twrp flashable won't work)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5...irmware-npn25-137-67-5-fastboot-t3694738/amp/
2. EFS Backup (must be backup from when you had signal)
3. Optional Magisk or SuperSU
https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-magisk/
Step 1: Flash Stock Rom
Step 2: Flash Magisk (optional, but recommend)
Step 3: Restore EFS
Finally Enjoy!

I'm not talking about that but bad signal strenght... I can use my phone, but in certain places, like the subway, the internet is so slow that it is unusable... but, as I said, I can see a lot of people even playing Clahs Royale with no problem
I think this phone is generally weak in this category. My wife has a Samsung S6 active and we both use Tmobile. In similar locations hers gives much better reception.

The problem isn't the phone it's the rom your using. Example For me: with VOLTE (Verizon) From my house
Pixel Experience gives 40MB Down and 33MB UP
Stock Rom gives 20-30MB Down and 20 UP

Get two of the same phone ex. iPhone 8
One will always have better Network speeds then the other, even if their new.

Avoid thick covers and cases for mobile, if your cover has metal on it then there is a good chance it is interfering with signals. Usually, having poor signals is more of a hardware issue than a software one.
Off topic - I read somewhere that some criminals keep their communication devices inside closed packed Lead Boxes. Those block nearly all type of signals, be it related to Wifi, Bluetooth, Cellular or GPS.

But that nothing to do with no signal inside subway.
Edit: Metal won't have a major affect on the signal, depending on the phone to metal ratio. Similar to magnets.
Not to be rude but "was using debloated stock then changed to Oreo stock" Has everyone knows signal is bad on roms other then the original (which no one has)..
I forgot to ask you what signal do you get?
LTE, 4g, H+, H, 3g, 2g?

Anyone experiencing Network Bugs ?
Poor Internet.!
PUBG is unplayable.!
BUT Reception is Good.
That happens because while playing pubg our hands are in such a position that they cover the upper and bottom part of the phone completely. The upper and bottom part of the phone are plastic so they recive better internet signal. So next time you play try to hold the phone in a way that there is some space to "breathe" for that part.

Well, i'm not alone. Yes in 4g the connection is very poor and where there is low signal often is unable to transfer data. In my house, for example, where the signal is low, even if it get 4g, is unable at all to transfer data. I need to force in 3g to have network.
I opened a thread on zentalk forum some days ago: https://www.asus.com/zentalk/thread-236917-1-1.html
Please, write too on the thread, so that asus can take note of the problem and improve the situation.
In 3g the antennas seems to work better. I hope they did not make poor 4g antennas and that they can improve it with software update

In 3g the antennas seems to work better. I hope they did not make poor 4g antennas and that they can improve it with software update

I have been screaming about not only just network drop issues but also live wallpapers/ambient display/Camera2api & many more to name but they seem to reply you with some childish excuses like this to preserve stock Android experience on device or clear cache & blah blah blah... They are not at all atleast at this moment focused on fixing bugs...
I even flashed custom ROM & compared it with gameplay on the stock rom & it clearly showed that network drop & lags only are present on the stock ROM & I even made video about it & instead of accepting the issue they 1st blamed network providers & later said that this is happening because I rooted my device...

What rom do you tried? I checked on lineage "official" and the baseband is the same of the latest Asus official, so i think that on lineage the problem still occurs.

It was Lineage OS... If I'm sure it was first Pie based ROM for Zenfone a month or 2 ago...
Unplayable on Mobile Data.

Network was still poor for sure but there were no frequent sudden drops in between while playing the game atleast for me... & Know .331 update has ruined it to next level... Now it's network drops + worst calling experience...

Same here.. You are not alone.
LOCKING TO A SINGLE NETWORK BAND IS THE ONLY FIX.
Solution ->
1) Use only 1 SIM with 4G enabled.
2) Disable 4G in 2nd SIM and select preferred network type 2G/3G for it.
