[QUESTION] What affects the phone signal? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi! I have the US 4GB 64GB version of Moto G5 Plus which is not avaiable here in Brazil.
Gonna try to be clear... but sorry for my bad english...
The fact is that I was on debloated Nougat (bootloader unlocked and rooted) and was experiencing very poor signal in several situations... the most notable was when I was on the subway and since this phone is veeeeery popular here I could see a lot of people using this phone, browsing, facebook, instagram etc. but, even though the network signal in status bar was full or almost full for me, it was like I had no data at all..
I then upgraded to Oreo Soak Test #3 yesterday and today I noticed that now in the subway, I have no data at all, there is no 4g/3g symbol next to the signal symbol...
So the question... what affects the phone signal? What can I do to solve this issue?
Oh, my carrier is maybe the best in my region when it comes to coverage
Thanks in advance!

EFS affects Signal, and IMEI
Hello,
You know English well (comparing to my bad English).
Loss of Network (Data), and IMEI is caused by deleted EFS.
EFS is deleted in the process of Installion of some custom roms (including stock rom).
Rostoring EFS on Oreo soak test won't work for several reasons (for me it only worked on Nougat).
Restore Process:
Must Have:
1. Andorid 7.0 Stock Rom (Fastboot) (Twrp flashable won't work)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5...irmware-npn25-137-67-5-fastboot-t3694738/amp/
2. EFS Backup (must be backup from when you had signal)
3. Optional Magisk or SuperSU
https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-magisk/
Step 1: Flash Stock Rom
Step 2: Flash Magisk (optional, but recommend)
Step 3: Restore EFS
Finally Enjoy!

I'm not talking about that but bad signal strenght... I can use my phone, but in certain places, like the subway, the internet is so slow that it is unusable... but, as I said, I can see a lot of people even playing Clahs Royale with no problem

I think this phone is generally weak in this category. My wife has a Samsung S6 active and we both use Tmobile. In similar locations hers gives much better reception.

The problem isn't the phone it's the rom your using. Example For me: with VOLTE (Verizon) From my house
Pixel Experience gives 40MB Down and 33MB UP
Stock Rom gives 20-30MB Down and 20 UP

Your results aren't accurate.
Get two of the same phone ex. iPhone 8
One will always have better Network speeds then the other, even if their new.

Avoid thick covers and cases for mobile, if your cover has metal on it then there is a good chance it is interfering with signals. Usually, having poor signals is more of a hardware issue than a software one.
Off topic - I read somewhere that some criminals keep their communication devices inside closed packed Lead Boxes. Those block nearly all type of signals, be it related to Wifi, Bluetooth, Cellular or GPS.

But that nothing to do with no signal inside subway.
Edit: Metal won't have a major affect on the signal, depending on the phone to metal ratio. Similar to magnets.
Not to be rude but "was using debloated stock then changed to Oreo stock" Has everyone knows signal is bad on roms other then the original (which no one has)..
I forgot to ask you what signal do you get?
LTE, 4g, H+, H, 3g, 2g?

[Q] Mobile data problem

I've got some problems with mobile data on my Note 4. I've bought unbranded phone in shop unrelated to any mobile provider. It's Snapdragon version (N910F).
I've got prepaid service, without LTE available (if that's important). The problem is that every now and then mobile data simply stops. There is still H or H+ sign in notification bar, and upload arrow blinks. but when i try to open web page or send message through viber, wattsup it acts like there is no network. Then i have to wait for about 30 seconds or manually turn mobile data off and then on again for internet to start working again.
I've tried changing APN settings, changing network type, but the problem is still there.
I've read some similar issues with Note 3 and SGS5 users, and some problems with modem versions, but i couldn't find anything from note 4 users
And this problem is very frustrating on phone like Note 4
Is there anything else i could try?
Mate i have exact same problem
I don't know if this is relevant, if your apn settings has a proxy and port values, try to delete it and let the proxy and port be blank. I had issues previously with data getting stuck while using proxy setting.
Sent from my SM-N910C using Tapatalk
I also loose data signal and on calls people cant hear me properly.. doesny always happen. Ill try thanks
Also experiencing this with Tmobile UK.
Also have this exact same problem with the unbranded SM-N910H, H+ but no internet all of a sudden. I also sometimes lose the whole signal (Emergency Calls Only) so I have to reboot or turn airplane mode off and on to get it working again. I asked some people and they told me it's a coverage problem with the network provider. IDK if it's true.
No ahmadmob its the phone although i have n910u i have exact same problems as u!! I thinks its modem hopefully gets solved soon im in Australia using prepaid only 3g/h+

Glad it's not a carrier specific issue.
Guess I'll wait for an official fix or for other radios to become available.
I rang samsung australia few weeks ago and they had no idea than again when do they ever!? Lol so looks like we will have to wait buddy
Some common suggestions:
1- Swap the SIM card into another phone to see if the problem persists?
2- If the problem is due to Note 4, you may need to update your firmware/baseband to the latest one (if one is available, or you have to wait until Samsung release it), or try another firmware (from another model) or custom ROM.
Tried already mate sims fine updated reflashed stock rom and still same problem.. hopedully update comes soon
I just tried sim card from another carrier, and for now, everything looks fine.
I'll go ask for a new sim from my carrier, or switch my number to another one.
Sorry for digging, didn't want to make a new topic.
I'm here with the same problem. Did any of you find solution for it (other than switching to different carrier). I'm on Play in Poland and i find mobile data problematic mostly in roaming (free roaming with every carrier in Poland). For example on t-mobile or plus i find my up arrow constatnly blinking and H switching to H+ and again. Problem is even worse with 2 or less signal bars. I'm thinking of changing sim cars to new one, but on my note 2 everything works perfectly fine.
I thought I noticed a slight improvement after the final KitKat update, may have been a placebo effect though.
In general it's still bad, much worse than my HTC M7, same network, same location etc. It seems to be particularly bad when travelling at speed e.g. on the train I get full bars but only 1 arrow flickering.
Upgraded to Lollipop a couple of days ago and finally rooted, doubt this will make a difference but will be able to report during my commute tomorrow.
In summary: The HSDPA modem on my phone is rubbish.
P.S. Previous phones I've owned came with options for different modems, I'd often flash these to improve performance, where are they for the Note 4?
I think they're not available yet, at least on lollipop...
Mine is completely fixed after a few updates i get 4g+ here excellent reception

Could tell more how did you fix your problem?
All fixed!
I can confirm that after the lollipop 5.0.1 update on my SM-N910H all my mobile data problems/mobile network drop outs are solved!. 3 days without any problems now.
Edit: maybe it had something to do with Radio and it got fixed after it got updated along with the lollipop update package?
Guys, here in my country Bulgaria, many of us owners of SGN4 have the same issue and wilth Lollipop also. I have noticed that with KitKat the problem was more frequent than Lollipop but it is still there. We have tried Polish Lollipop and now the official Bulgarian Lollipop but the problem still exists. I hope somebody will tell me which ROM you have installed (oficial) so I could share it with my fellow citizens. Thank!

Signal issues with H990DS in Australia? (or in general)

Has anyone else noticed issues with reception with the H990DS specificically in Australia or where ever else? I bought mine from an online site called BecexTech because it was a lot freaking cheaper than JBHIFI but ever since getting it I've noticed varied problems with signal. It seems I get better signal indoors but when ever I'm moving such as driving or in common places I visit I am noticing the signal cuts out a lot or just doesn't connect at all. I never had these issues on my old Note 3. I stream the radio while I'm driving (because it sounds 100x better than FM) but am noticing the signal cuts out at least 10 times a trip. That never happened on my note 3 or only happened once or twice a trip. Has anyone else noticed poorer reception? My guess is either my antennas are bit faulty or its "tuned" for Taiwan or something. (I'm not sure how telco and phones work, I've just heard that some models of phones are made for certain countries.)
Also note the phone was in Chinese (?) when I first got it Check the PIC below
My telco is OPTUS.
Any thoughts.? I don't wanna RMA the phone after only a week and a bit
Oh and I'll also mention Gps accuracy is a lot worse too. Disconnects and in accurate speed and location have been a problem compared to my note 3. I might give the local LG repair centre a call and see what they say.
I purchased the H990ds from a Taiwan reseller. I've had no problems with reception so far (I've had the phone about a month). I'm using my phone on the Optus network.
My phone shows:
Build No: NRD90M
Software Version: V10b-TWN-XX
There is a similar post to yours on Whirlpool, however. I must say that my phone didn't come in Chinese. When I first turned it on it asked me to select a language.

Yeah I'm not sure. The phone came pre setup. But I just changed the language and reset it so I could set it up myself. Could you link me to that thread?
I also have that identical Build No. And SW version
I bought mine locally...yes. reception issues outside of city CBD and its closest surrounding suburbs is absolutely horrible. i barely get 1 bar reception on Telstra!
Yeah it's odd your phone was setup already even from a grey importer, but cell and GPS reception can be changed and tweaked in the system files on the phone.
Your firmware will be setup for tw, if we had root you could change the build.prop system device type and GPS.conf settings to match the Aus firmware and probably get better reception. Checking these files even the Aus version isn't using the exact GPS NTP server so...
Ive had no issues with my jbhifi model so far regarding reception or gps, Optus network.

Is there any app that could just view the build.prop? That way I could compare mine to yours? Even after root comes out how do I even know what to do to fix it? Thanks for the insights.
EDIT: Went and copied build.prop from ES File manager. Here it is: http://pastebin.com/QvTvHBvi Maybe you can see whats different? Because I have no idea what im doing in the build prop, so I dont know what to look for.
I have been using the H99ds and yes, the cell signal is problematic, especially when using in Indonesia. I constantly have to turn on airplane mode then off again to try to get a signal. When signal is good the "arrow icon" would appear but always drop off suddenly. Sometimes I can still access Whatsapp chat without the arrow icons when only the 4G logo is displayed, but I cannot surf. Very frustrating.
Compared to my V10, G4, S7E the cell reception is definitely a notch down. Just got an Windows 10 phone HP Elite x3 and it performed so much better than the V20. A big disappointment.

Thanks, normally you would change the ro.product. sections to match the countries device you are in and update the modem/baseband if possible [check image]. Seems your version numbers are higher/newer than mine. I hhave 10d-DEC update waiting for me to find WiFi to download.
Similar to the GPS.conf file you would change the NTP server to your region plus other settings tweaks.
#NTP server
NTP_SERVER=europe.pool.ntp.org
To
NTP_SERVER_AU=oceania.pool.ntp.org
I also want to modify the camera quality and options if possible.
Once we get root we can experiment, also making backups of each file you edit etc in case of bootloops.

Yeah just noticed the TWN in the firmware compared to your AUS. Kinda anoying. There is no official LG downloads or tool to flash stock FW is there? I could maybe change it to the Aus FW if there was.
Well my final question is do you think its worth the hassle or should I just return this phone and buy a legit Australian one from JB. Once a stable root arrives the build prop changes will make it work just as good as the Australian right?

Does your data indicator icon "double arrow" (next to 4G/3G cell signal indicator icon) sometimes disappear or always on?
In Taiwan, Singapore the double arrow indicator sometimes disappear, but in Indonesia it always happen, maybe due to weaker signal? I can use Whatsapp or even play CoC BUT can't surf internet when that happens; have to get the double arrow indicator back by turning on airplane mode and then turn off a few times, very frustrating!

I can't find anyone on that thread you sent with this issue so im not sure whats up. Do you possible know the issue? It shows this message when the phone is connected and i first open the program
Also couldn't I modify the build.prop from twrp? Can twrp be installed without breaking the phone?
No idea sorry mate, ive not tried any of this as yet...
You cant edit the build prop because we dont have root yet. We dont have unlocked bootloader so no version of twrp compiled yet.

Well I ended up going through with the Aus F/W but it came out... strange? It now has some Mexican Telco apps and the version does not say anything similar to yours in settings. It also has 2 errors on every reboot. I attached some screenshots. I haven't been able to test signal yet because there is none where i am. I will test that tomorrow.
Yeah that's odd the extra apps, knew it was to good to be true. The base band is correct but I've seen that on other firmware also now, so I think we will all get the same versions eventually. Those errors look to be related to an app not finding the correct version, could be LGsmart world or something.
Perhaps the firmware didn't wipe the app data partition before it flashed over.
Are you sure it was the phone and not the location you're at that's caused your reception issues? Almost all locations should have adequate 3g at least now.

Weak antenna, poor reception

I might have been sloppy with my searching, but I haven't found any threads dedicated to reception issues by Yotaphone 2. Mine constantly loses signal and drops calls even though I'd never had such problems with my previous phones in the same places. I have tried every possible setting (limiting to UMTS, even GSM) to no avail. Reception isn't exactly amazing where I live, but it's definitely good enough to provide stable and reliable service to any average mobile phone. Not with a Yotaphone though.
I also did a side-by-side test using my wife's LG G2 Mini and Network Cell Info Lite. Both phones used the same provider, same base transceiver tower, same sector, channel, every single ID was identical. I took about 50 measurements on both phones in different rooms, out on the street etc. And the Yotaphone had a 10.5 decibels weaker signal on average, which is just insane: 10x less power received by the antenna than the G2 Mini's.
I'm running Lollipop RU 134 on a YD206 (deduced from the 35969 IMEI, despite the About menu saying YD201 due to the firmware). I am aware a better choice would have been CN due to the different bands but during this comparative test I was using a channel that is supported by the RU radio too, so I'm afraid this is an antenna hardware issue which no firmware update would help.
I welcome you to post your own experience with signal reception. I still wonder if this is due to a faulty unit or a more widespread issue. I'd also welcome any solutions you are aware of that have been proven to work.
You have answered your question by yourself. Install CN-Radio.
That's good to hear. One problem though: I just ran yota flasher and saw there was no 5.0 CN release so I'm not entriely sure how to do it. If I flash it with the Hong Kong version (5.0 HK.1.66) will that do the trick too? I'm too novice to perform a radio-only flashing, I know I'd end up bricking my phone.
EDIT: So if I get this right, even old 4.4 CN firmwares have radio that can be paired with a 5.0 RU. My only question is, because I haven't seen this mentioned in the sticky, do I have to do the power+volume down dance when I'm flashing radio only?
This is very helpful for yotaphone beginners:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/yotaphone-one/help/guide-everything-to-yotaphone2-t3547194
I have flashed the CN radio. My baseband version is S01_003_3034_CN1_M05 now.
As it turns out, it didn't help my situation one bit. Signal is as poor as ever, still the same 10 decibels lower than the G2 and sometimes cutting out altogether. The CN radio may have added an LTE band or two but ultimately it's like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. This antenna can barely hold a 3G signal, let alone access 4G where I live. Thanks anyway.
Exactly the same problem with my YD206. I run a Russian rom and the phone shows its YD201, but I know it's YD206. I tried changing the radio from the Russian 1.1.134 rom to CN radio - S01_003_3034_CN1_M05, no improvement, tried S01_003_4240_RU1_M05 radio, still no improvement, will try all the others these days and will post the results. Also GPS reception is terrible, almost unusable.
I have just as good reception with my samsung as my 206, so i guess something is not as it should be with your yota.
From my own experience with a former phone, messing with the radio can cause lasting problems. I got rid of mine om my Motorola by nothing less then leaving it with the battery out for some time and then going straight into download to reinstall the radio before it booted.
Would running the yota dry to perform a similar operation help? I don't know, it could be just your phone having antenna problems or something completely different. But i quess there is no harm in trying.
You could also try flashing HK radio.
if you purchased the aluminium bumper, remove it...
I also have the YD206 and reception is good with my phone, I use the radio from the latest HongKong Lollipop, it's different in size from Russian and China ones, and since my phone came from HongKong I decided to use that one and indeed seemps better. Yyou cand flash only the radio and try yourself, just put your phone in flash mode and with the correct radio folder in the yotaflash installed folder, flash with the following commands:
fastboot flash modem firmware\radio\NON-HLOS.bin(ENTER)
fastboot flash sbl1 firmware\radio\sbl1.mbn(ENTER)
fastboot flash rpm firmware\radio\rpm.mbn(ENTER)
fastboot flash tz firmware\radio\tz.mbn(ENTER)

I also have the YD206 and reception is good with my phone, I use the radio from the latest HongKong Lollipop, it's different in size from Russian and China ones, and since my phone came from HongKong I decided to use that one and indeed seemps better

No it's not different to the Russian one, HK.1.1.66 and RU.1.1.124 have the same radio. I just ran an md5 checksum on both, and all files are dead identical. The only thing worth trying is 4.4.3-S01-003-HK1.0.3.61A which is different both from both the RU and CN radio. If it doesn't work, I'm giving up and accept that I received a defective unit.
I tested 4.4.3 HK radio, no improvement. I'm afraid it's the end of the road, I don't see anything else left to try. Since I don't believe in black magic, I'm not going to bother with running the battery dry before flashing, but if someone does it with success, I'd love to hear about it.
I'm so sad. I love the device, I love the e-ink display, battery life is fine as well. If only it worked as a cell phone... Perhaps I was just unlucky and could order another one which may work but I think I'll just cut my losses here.

YD206, Germany, E-Plus on 3G (LTE is crappy where I live anyway). While E-Plus is the worst provider, this is definitely, 100%, without a shadow of doubt not a provider issue. I've been with E-Plus for several years and none of my phones had any problems whatsoever. As I had written previously, the problem isn't the bands, it's the crappy signal no matter the channel. Repeatedly measured and confirmed to be 10 dB weaker than a 3 year old, low-end G2 Mini.
AFAIK nobody has done signal strength tests on the Yotaphone on this forum. I'd be interested to see if this is an isolated issue or if Yotaphone's antenna does in fact suck. It's not something you think about if service is good around you, but full bars don't mean much on their own, as the range is huge: the bottom end of full bars is 20 dB lower (100x weaker) than a really good -70dBm signal, and 300x weaker than a perfect -65 dBm.

Well, I have to test that in real life (moving often), but Lollipop have lot of bugs with radio control, network and Wifi, Marshmallow should not take long to be released officially from Yota, lets hope.

107 dBm ... and 3 asu now with RU firmware 5.0 and RU radio

64 dBm is lot better than 107 dBm for signal, so you should flasg HK/CN radio on your RU firmware 5.0, you can flash the radio only.
check your correct files (HK/CN radio files) location and the location of fastboot command and do as following:
fastboot flash modem firmware\radio\NON-HLOS.bin(ENTER)
fastboot flash sbl1 firmware\radio\sbl1.mbn(ENTER)
fastboot flash rpm firmware\radio\rpm.mbn(ENTER)
fastboot flash tz firmware\radio\tz.mbn(ENTER)
Yes, but after that I will have the proximity sensor problem, I saw someone from forum lose the sensonr, because was allways online :|

As it seems that's truth, I have wrote this about it:
I discovered that I also have this problem, I was with the wrong radio, had to flash the Chinese radio and it suddenly appeared, this is what I have found I have an YD206, YD201 also seems affected with the same problem after a chat with a Spanish user with original YD201 Russian Lollipop and Russian Radio :
On YD206:
With wrong radio. radio (Russia xx versions) on YD206 , in KitKat or Lollipop ROMs the proximity sensor is OFF by default BUT, as soon you turn ON an app that uses it, it won't turn off again, it keeps blinking even if you force kill the app that started. However it will turn off if the screen is off, after 5 seconds after. Also it's important to acknowledge that 2G only with this radios fails. On Lollipop Wifi won't turn off automatically, just manually.
YD206 With the correct radio. radio S01_003_3034_CN1_M05 2G 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE) all work and with better reception, but as soon the screen is ON, the proximity sensor starts working, does not matter what app you have open, when you turn OFF the screen the proximity sensor will turn OFF in about 5 seconds. If you are using the EPD screen the proximity sensor will turn OFF faster than 5 seconds, but as soon you touch the EPD it will turn ON for 3 seconds or so. On Lollipop Wifi won't turn off automatically, just manually.
So the problem acts differently when you flash a different radio, I am not sure where's the bug comes from, but it seems there's also a bug with YotaRom. There's a Xposed module to disable proximity sensor in specific apps, I haven't tried that, I also would like to know how this behaves with the Marshmallow Beta.
(For the ones that are not aware of this problem, keep in mind that to see this problem you need to be on a dark place to see the very faint red light of the proximity sensor.)
Best regards,
This problem is also being discussed here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/yot...tive-t3520013/

Is it possible to change modem ?

I am having bad signal all day long wherever I am. I wonder if i can change modem to see if there is any improvment ? I am using XT1642 with " M8952_70030.25.03.62.02R " baseband version . I want to change modem to get better signal ? or is there any thing i can do to improve my signal rather than changing lte to 3g ?
No, you cannot and you should not play with it.
Your attempts to play with modem will give you more troubles (SIM not working, IMEI lost, etc, also a cause of losing fingerprint sensor)
If you search in other threads, if modem is corrupted/changed, then they have such problems and they are unable to get original baseband back..
So keep it as it is.. that is something that Motorola gives updates for it.. you don't touch it..
thank you for your comment but I want to see my options cuz with this signal quality I cant use my phone at all mobile standby drain bad phone calls etc.
That's something you need to ask to your network provider.
Best will be if you ask your friends/family near your area for which network they use and how is the performance in that area and choose another network..
From ROM side, it can be 'ril' issue, but most of nougat roms and stock rom are best without any ril issues, can't say about oreo.
Nothing else you can do for this issue...
My sisters phone has name signal quality with mine in terms of dbm criteria yet when I looked at her battery stats I saw that she has no battery drain caused by mobile standby that interesting.
ps: she uses samsung galaxy j7 exynos variant

Network Issue : High Ping Value

Anyone experiencing Network Bugs ?
Poor Internet.!
PUBG is unplayable.!
BUT Reception is Good.
That happens because while playing pubg our hands are in such a position that they cover the upper and bottom part of the phone completely. The upper and bottom part of the phone are plastic so they recive better internet signal. So next time you play try to hold the phone in a way that there is some space to "breathe" for that part.

Well, i'm not alone. Yes in 4g the connection is very poor and where there is low signal often is unable to transfer data. In my house, for example, where the signal is low, even if it get 4g, is unable at all to transfer data. I need to force in 3g to have network.
I opened a thread on zentalk forum some days ago: https://www.asus.com/zentalk/thread-236917-1-1.html
Please, write too on the thread, so that asus can take note of the problem and improve the situation.
In 3g the antennas seems to work better. I hope they did not make poor 4g antennas and that they can improve it with software update

I have been screaming about not only just network drop issues but also live wallpapers/ambient display/Camera2api & many more to name but they seem to reply you with some childish excuses like this to preserve stock Android experience on device or clear cache & blah blah blah... They are not at all atleast at this moment focused on fixing bugs...
I even flashed custom ROM & compared it with gameplay on the stock rom & it clearly showed that network drop & lags only are present on the stock ROM & I even made video about it & instead of accepting the issue they 1st blamed network providers & later said that this is happening because I rooted my device...

What rom do you tried? I checked on lineage "official" and the baseband is the same of the latest Asus official, so i think that on lineage the problem still occurs.

Same here.. You are not alone.
LOCKING TO A SINGLE NETWORK BAND IS THE ONLY FIX.
Solution ->
1) Use only 1 SIM with 4G enabled.
2) Disable 4G in 2nd SIM and select preferred network type 2G/3G for it.
