T-mobile 5g speed test a mile from the Hudson River on the New Jersey side. - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

On tmobile
5g speed test a mile from the Hudson River on the New Jersey side.
This test was taken in my car by the way.

this is a terrible result

Yeah,
Just got my S20Plus yesterday, 5g where I live not too good either, got 47dl and 23ul. Today I will be closer to a bigger city and test it there.
I think all the hoopla about 5g is crap,

I'm getting like 30dl and 8ul in ft Lauderdale. I figured it would be way better. First day the speed test app was showing 80+dl but ever since it has been significantly less. T-Mobile as well.

Y'all are getting some horrible "5g" speeds. That's basically what I get on LTE. This is what I've been getting so far. Still not really close to that 1gb/sec speed advertised, but much faster than my S10+ was.
Edit: I'm in Dallas, on Sprint network.

In spots where I get 5g, it's basically the same.

I disabled 5G and the speeds I get a quite a bit higher.

So there is no 5g where I live but lte at my house is awesome

New high speed for me, once again Dallas area.

So it seems t-mobile merger with sprint helped. My speeds have doubled through out the day.

T-mobile's push into 600Mhz 5g is more about coverage and building penetration than it is about speed increases. Speed increases should come as they expand into Sprint's mid-band spectrum. The significantly increased efficiency of 5g should also help when lots of people pack into special events that would have overloaded 4g airwaves.
I can say that I have noticed some reduced drop-outs inside some troublesome buildings.

Can't wait for this to get to Phoenix. Though in actuality, I don't know that I'll notice much. Only time I use provider data is when I'm streaming music in the car. All other times I have WiFi. Well, at least 98% of the time. But it'll still be nice those rare times I need it, as long as I'm not paying any more than I do for LTE.

Tmobile updated 3G speeds to mora than 6mbps?

Hey guys, I was downloading a 12 mb file from my gmail and I noticed the download speeds were 400+. is it just me or the service got an update?
I tried finding information on tmobiles site with no positive results. I retried my download 2 more times still the same. Will I be charged if this is an error? btw I live in New York.
they are updating to 7.2 speed, first places are chicago and new york, so your one of the lucky ones.

I beg to differ, if they expanded first it would cost more money to upgrade all of the new towers. Now they just have to update what they have, and expand with better towers.

I second that, I'm still roaming where I live while the major cities are moving to 4g. no fair , well at least At&t has edge out here.
I've seen on boygenius and other sites Sprint will offer WiMax phones next year.

agreed. In Boise the "other 3" networks are offering 3g coverage.
Same old 3G speeds here in NYC.
is it odd that i never get 3g in Louisville, Kentucky? or is there just not much 3g coverage around that area?

"there's a map for that!"
I can vouch they uped everything in the Chi.
I live way north of Chi in bumble **** where supposedly I wasnt suppose to get 3G about 2 weeks ago it lit up.
This picture is running Ubuntu, new wired tethered app, and update running in bg.
As I get closer to the City its much faster. ...
I'm in Chicago as I type this (Lincoln Park and Downtown), and I have to say I'm disappointed in the speeds up here. I've only seen download speeds in the 400ish mbps, whereas in Toledo, OH, I routinely get between 600 and 750 mbps. I'm guessing it's because of the sheer number of users on T-mobile's 3G here, as opposed to Toledo. Still, I would have expected T-mobile to strengthen the network to reflect the larger number of subscribers here.

the only thing i will believe is video proof of a speedtest using a speedtest app on the phone...a screenshot is just not concrete enough since pics can be edited

Sprint 3G speed in Los Angeles?

Anyone on sprint can comment on this?
What's the 3G speed in Southern California (LA and vicinity)?
I am coming from ATT and just wanted to compare the speed!
Orange county I get 700-1300 down about 300-500 up.

Orange county is kind far from LA but don't you think 700-1300 is kind of low compared to ATT? Did you use ATT before?
No, never with AT&T, and I am using a Hero not an Evo.
Thought you would want as much data as possible and didn't see any responses.
So disregard if this doesn't provide you some ballpark.
Its been fast enough that I never use wifi.
Downtown Los Angeles: ~1MB down, ~.4/.5MB up.

No I really appreciated your response. Thanks again. I use my phone more for data than voice. Just wanted to see whether I will lose any speed going from ATT to Sprint.
Anyway, I will have 30 days to decide so I should be good.

From La Mirada/Norwalk (5FWY/605FWY) I get 1.4MB down; .5MB up on my Hero. The EVO will be uncapped 3G as well, no? I've had ATT and T-Mobile, and my connection has always appeared to be faster. In my corporate building, amongst all the other users (ATT, T-Mo, Verizon) and phones (Eris, MyTouch, G1, N1, Pre, BB, etc), I've always had the strongest signal and fastest connection. Might just be the area though.
In westwood area, I get 300 - 400 kbps in the day.. and 1 mbps at night.. not that great

Yeah, that's very poor data speed!
I live in Alhambra, never check the speed, but it seems very fast. I can wathc spb tv, youtube and listen to the radio smoothy.
Sprint's 3g speeds are simply horrible in the entire SF bay area compared to to at&t (i know this is not the region you asked for).
I get 300Kbps - 1Mbps down (mostly 500Kbps) and 500-700Kbps up.
I checked pretty much all across the Bay Area. it is like 3g from the 90s....and might just be a deal breaker for me.
They do however have better coeverage than at&t in most places. not sure why their speed is so slow.
With at&t i get about 2-3Mbps down in most areas tested.
not sure up there but down here in FL sprint 3g is way faster than att 3g or tmo 3g.. i have the HD2 on tmo and a 3gs on att and evo ofcourse on sprint and im not sure if is the phone or the sprint network but evo kick the **** out of the hd2 and att on a test i did using the 3 phones.. evo loaded pages significantly faster than the other 2 carriers . in some sases way faster

Not true, in the last month or so I have consistently been seeing 4+ download and 500k up on my iphone 3gs. So other than uploads, Sprints 4g won't be that much faster than what I am seeing now with AT&T. In the suburbs it is dropping to 1.4+ / 400k.

3G Speeds in Indianapolis

Anyone live in Indianapolis or the surrounding areas? Since I switched to Sprint this month my 3G hasn't been faster than 600kpbs (on an extremely lucky day). It is more common to be between 100-300 kbps and I think that is a ripoff with an Everything Data Plan.
Anyone share my experience or have better numbers to provide?
Wish I knew out to check it, but dont know how. Im an android newbie. I can say this, every since switching to Sprint from both Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, I have actually received better 3g signals and coverage at the workplace. If you show me how to check I will check.
I am receiving better 3g than before.
That seems about right to me... I actually am lucky to get that high on a speed test... Seems fairly fast when surfing or downloading from the market though. I agree that it seems a bit low.

I would kill for those speeds? Where are you at Dukins if you don't mind me asking? I live in Carmel and work over by the Pyramids so I'm mostly always on the North side.
I am lucky to ever be able to get 600kbps, I'm more likely to have 300kbps down or even 130ish. I have no clue why my 3g is so slow.
Edit: I just ran a test and got 95kbps downstream and 734kbps upstream.......
dukins: can you go to your dialer and type ##33284# then click 1X Engineering and tell me what number is listed for SID? It is most likely 4135

SID is the ID of the tower you are connecting to.
I work in Indy and have been trying to figure out what is going too. I was wondering if it was my custom ROM or because I updated my radio? Or if it was just the EVO itself.
The speed I'm getting is killing me right now! I know my speeds aren't as slow outside of Indy where I live.
Kind of annoyed that I'm paying extra and my download speeds are slower on my EVO than they were on my Hero.
Was wishing to have 4G....but hell I'd be happy with a decent 3G at this point!!!
I get crap speeds anywhere in Carmel/Westfield; bad Sprint towers in northern Indianapolis.
I talked to a Sprint Tech Support Rep who gave my phone a "network refresh". Sounded like bullsh*t, but afterwards I've been getting great speeds where I have a good signal. I've been getting up to 1.4mbps in downtown Carmel and in Broadripple.
Also she said we are getting 2 new towers on the north side of Indy, one off Hazel Dell Pkwy in August, and another in Westfield in December.
Well, I was a couple of miles from downtown this morning sitting at standstill in pouring rain and traffic. Did a speedtest and got around 1.5 MBPS down! I was happy with that.
However, when I was back at work...it was under 400k. Guess maybe it could be my office building?

I'm getting 1.4mbps down and 321kbps up on the north west side right now. I tested last night around the kessler/meridian area and got ~600kbps both ways.

LOL wow that's pretty bad. But that's not the phone's fault. There are many factors in play that can slow down your connection.. Network Capacity, Bandwidth, Signal strength, etc.
It's still pretty bad though. Try again later, things should improve.

i live in allendale michigan during the school year and the past month or so my speeds have been just like this. my guess would be from an increase in network traffic from all the new evo's. ill do a test right now at 11 pm, will probably be much faster than i normally get nowadays. its damn ridiculous, before the evo i used to get 1.5 mbps download all the time.
IN BOTH TEST I HAVE 4-5 BARS. (i can see the cell towers out my back door)
test 1
download 357 kbps
upload 127 kbps
ping 477 ms
test 2
download 95 kbps
upload 169 kbps
ping 829
these are horrible, data is pretty much unusable at these speeds.
edit: btw i do live in a college town (grand valley state university) so there are a lot of cell phone users.
Suck it up! Data speeds at my apartment are TERRIBLE even though I've got fantastic service. I've got tons of these extremely slow data tests.
It's been a while since I was testing - I've given up. I just steal the neighbor's wifi for my phone now.
BTW, I'm like 45 mins west of you, hockey4life. I'm in Muskegon. It's only bad right near my apt. though :/ It's fine all the rest of the time around town here.
1.27mbit up HAH I'd love to see that. The only two which are moderately fast on my speedtest list are when I was trying out 4G in Grand Rapids!

Have any of you tried using real signal from the market? Just because the phone shows you signal bars, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have good signal for data. Real signal will show you your actual signal strength as it relates to both voice and data service.

no, but in my case the tower is right outside my house so it definitly should be high.
also, its not just in my house where its bad. it is everywhere in this area. the only time i get good good data speeds is far from area. i made a report and they said they would send a technician to look at the tower but doubt they actually will. if im stuck like this for the rest of this year im gonna flip.

Looks like quite the improvement to the speeds that I get at my house in Idaho.
But...I get 4G in most places that I'm at + I use android tether all the time, even at school sometimes. I try not to complain about Sprint's ****ty 3G too much, especially since the price is right.
Getting awful 3G speeds in Kalamazoo, MI as of late.. i'm lucky if its above 100KB down - upstream seems a little slow but closer to normal..
Hmm.. Whats the deal?
I think those 3g speeds are great compaired to my 150kb down and 110kb up in my house.
There's 4g about 15 ft away, but unusable 3g inside.
do any of you michiganders have any improvements? how about anyone else? im starting to wonder if things are gonna stay like this, i cant take these 2g (or 1g) speeds. there is essentially no reason for me to be paying data right now cause the only time i can use my phone pretty much is when im on wifi. if i was a new customer i definitely be using my 30 days right about now and switching carriers.
for the past few years ive been a sprint advocate with their good data coverage, good speeds, and good pricing but this is just horrible.

Tmo 600mhz 5g is horrible

So when using 5g on 600mhz, I get 13mb download. When I switch to 4g, I get 120mb download. I think what is happening is 5g and 4g don't carrier aggregate, so your only getting a single channel download. So bottom line? Turn off 5g. What a waste
Sucks
Glad i have very low expectations for 5G. Dont mind turning it off at all if i have to. Still curious to see how good/bad it ll be since i work in a major city.

Same, I get around 30mbps with lte and only about 18mbps with 5g, quite annoying
My opinion(results may vary elsewhere and I could be wrong) but in my area of Ohio, there are certain areas that have 4glte and no 5g and some small gaps in 4glte that now have 5g. I think its more to fill in the gaps of coverage. I personally love it and it isnt super fast but is good enough for me to have coverage in the areas that I travel with minimal dead areas.

I'll do some 5g speed tests on T-mobile when my Ultra Unlocked comes in today. I live in Greenville, S.C. The reviews I read for T-mobile on the Ultra in New York City said the the speed was about 100mbps+ for LTE and about 130-140mbps+ for sub6. Nothing extradorinary but better than LTE. Makes me wonder why your seeing such low 30mbps speeds.

I have to agree....the 5G here in Phoenix is really bad. south phoenix, tempe and ahwatukee. Did a few speed test in each area. Garbage.
Sub-6 5g was never about great download speeds, and I for one prefer t-mobile going the way they did (focusing on sub 6 before millimeter wave).
sub 6 5g is the lowest frequency band you can get, millimeter wave is highest frequency you can get. Lower frequency signals pass through objects much better than higher frequency signals, they also travel farther than high frequency signals.
The real world translation is that sub 6 is essentially getting data a hair faster than 4g but because it penetrates walls and objects better as well as travels much farther, it should translate to getting a better signal in more places. With millimeter wave, you literally have to have line of sight to a tower to get decent signal..... line.of.sight.
I, for one, would rather have better signal strength in more places than blazing fast speeds when you're standing on this one street corner facing a specific direction. I realistically only see millimeter wave being rolled out to high density areas like stadiums or temporary roll-outs for things like political events or festivals.
Sub 6 is a much better technology for real day to day usage, the only reason I see Verizon to implement millimeter wave before sub 6 was for marketing, so they can claim they have the fastest network.
Note to VZTech:
mmWave is never going to be the "Real" 5G. It can't. It requires a microwave transmitter installed literally on every block and a fiber back-haul from that location to the central office. That infrastructure doesn't exist and will never exist as it will cost each carrier hundreds of billions of dollars, except perhaps in dense urban areas(directional boring is expensive). That is why everyone is focusing on midband as the next threshold to implement - that is the reason for the merge of Sprint (they have tons of midband) and T-Mobile. Verizon has midband to redeploy and AT&T is currently deploying low and midband for the same reasons. Your Ultra will address all of it currently being deployed. If I was on Verizon, I would want a carrier based phone to handle future changes not yet announced.
As to the current T-Mobile 5G, I have a T-Mobile Note 10 + 5G (same modem but no mmWave antenna) and an Ultra in route. After receiving the phone I drove over wide areas in the Chicago suburbs and I saw ranges from very low to well over 200 Mbps. CA is part on the carrier side and part on the phone side. Since you are one of the ones testing it, have you contacted either Samsung or, more importantly, T-Mobile tech support? Perhaps there is a software issue on the phone. Perhaps there is an issue in your area that needs to be addressed. Remember, that until this week, very few people in the entire country (just those buying the Note 10+5G and the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren edition) have been on it. I would not be surprised that there are still bugs to be shaken out on these phones and on the network as a whole. I had to call in my area about that and T-Mobile made some changes. YMMV, but it is worth a call. I wouldn't pass judgement until after I had spoken to T-Mobile and they agreed that what you are getting is all you will get.
I get 1-2mpbs down with 5g enabled and 70mbps+ down with LTE (4g) turned off and 5g disabled. I think this is a software issue where it should be switching to LTE for higher download speeds and 5g when there is coverage issues.

This is due to no ca between "5g"600mhz, and 4g lte. Just turn off 5g. It's useless in most places.
