I'm hoping someone can give me the general consensus on whether flashing ROMS for this device vs staying on stock is best. I'm not currently up on the state of Samsung bloatware, if it's gotten better or worse. I found an open box at BB for $300. I'd say excellent condition. I'm getting it for my 12 year old daughter. I suppose the main concern is the general stability of flashing, say Lineage, and the lag that Samsung has, or at least used to have, as they age.

If I was going to use the tablet myself, I'd certainly flash a custom ROM and get root access. But for a 12yr old girl, I'd stay with stock and know she'd be getting the latest security updates. It's not like this was an 8 or 16gb tablet where getting rid of bloatware would be a major concern. It has plenty of storage and RAM to handle that. Just my two bits.
I only hand my son tablets / phones that can run custom ROMs (Lineage in particular). This way I can control what goes on them, what software, what he sees. I guess you could do similar things with a rooted stock device, but still. The other half of that is, most of the devices I give my son are old enough they aren't getting security updates from the manufacturers anymore. In those cases the only way to get security updates of any sort is to run custom ROMs.
Having rooted my tablet and also installed twrp I would certainly not do it for someone else to use
I would suggest buying package disabler pro and disabling all bloatware and Bixby.
When you use 'disable bloatware' on package disabler, it disables storage on sd card. So you just need to look through the disabled list and re-enable external storage.
Other than that small bug it is excellent.

Have you noticed a performance improvement? I see that it is slow for ordinary use such as social networks, the web and reading books.

I can't really say as I installed package disabler pro when I first had the tablet as I hate apps like bixby.
My tablet has always seemed plenty fast to me

I have read books with $29 dollar chinese knockoffs. How long does it take to turn a page? My very first tablet had an Antutu of about 900. This one about 185,000. I was still able to "surf the net" with that first one. They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm beginning to doubt that. I think it is in the MIND of the beholder. How anyone can consider this tablet slow for surfing or social networking, just blows my mind. "OH, but my latest and greatest iPad is just SOOO much better."
I can't remember having an Android device since my OG Droid that I didn't root and flash. I'm going to skip that for this S5e, for the first time. Everything I do with it these days, my head isn't bumping into it's 'ceiling', so to speak. My SM-T580 was a different story (thank goodness for @followmsi and @srgrussso among others), and custom paid off very well.
Then again, maybe I'm just getting old.:laugh: :highfive:

I have the Verizon LTE version and even with the Verizon preinstalled apps it doesn't take up a lot of space. I have the 64GB version and I had PLENTY of space for all of my apps. I put a 512GB microSD card in it so I don't have any space issues.
I rooted the SM-T725 few months ago when i got it but this was the 3rd time i had problems booting up and the twrp backup didn't work this time so i just cleaned it and i use stock now and i removed bloatware with ADB. I use only open source software no more google. But that just my way, if you want to root go with it but if its just to remove bloatware just use ADB.
Android 10 coming this june/july and probably android 11 will come to this tablet too because samsung does 2 major android updates to the device they release. If they don't you can unlock the bootloader and install android 11 in the future if a developer make it of course but i doubt it because galaxy tab s6 lite is coming soon so i don't know the future of this tablet.

Just got this SM-T720 & was planning on putting Lineage 17.1 (OFFICIAL) on it.
Got the firmware, Magisk, TWRP all downloaded.
But on TWRP's site it says you have to root before installing a "rooted TWRP" image?
What's with this?
Not asking for a full tutorial but seriously TWRP can't just be flashed in Odin then vbmeta multi-
disabler, WIPE, then flash ROM + Magisk?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. My posts elsewhere are days old & no replies....

I just got this tablet yesterday. I've had several previous Android tablets and phones and I've always rooted them. So far, I haven't run into anything that makes me want to root this one. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is a battery protection setting that allows you to limit charging to 85%. Normally, you have too root to do that. I may find a need to root somewhere down the road, but right now I'm hoping to get by with stock and unroofed.
Can you keep dex on other ROMs?

I've done it a few times and I would recommend following the maintainers instructions, LuK1337's Instructions . Dont skip anything, dont add anything, dont wipe anything that isnt listed, follow them exactly.
This tablet is picky. Magisk can be flashed in TWRP, but from what Ive found many modules can't, they will make the tablet fail to boot. Most modules can only be flashed in Magisk. My recommendation would be to get it booting before adding modules or even Magisk for that matter.
I'm using mine as stock, and this seems plenty fast for the 2 weeks I've owned it. Slow to read books? That sounds like an app problem - moon reader on a 2018 Fire HD 8 didn't have a problem reading books. How slow is the Fire 8? If I was in plex, hit the home button, and started netflix it was about 10 seconds from the press of the home button until netflix was responsive.
Besides, do you really want to have to fix your kid's devices when they inevitably have a problem?
**Edit** I also have a question. Are there any security issues when flashing roms or rooting on this like with the phones with KNoX and not being able to use secure folder and such? Im guessing if I flash a ROM I'd also be losing access to this right? (samsung apps and secure folder) Thank you!
Ughh Im kind of regretting buying this tablet now..did I make a mistake? From what Ive seen on here, it sounds like its best not to root it. Ive found that on some newer devices, irts best not to root them to avoid unnecessary problems because some just dont work well with root and magisk, especially if a lot of the modules arent going to work. I mean I dont really have any reason to root this except for not being able to use / change the themes. I cant believe they dont have the theme store on this tablet! I'm so bummed thats one of the good things about samsung phone that I miss.

Hi everyone, great threads on this forum and it's helped guided me with a lot of questions that I've been facing.
So my wonderful gf bought me this tablet as a surprise last week, I've greatly enjoyed it.
But I'm still a little tossed up on it, the experience with the tablet has been mixed.
At times it's great speedy, responsive, and probably providing me with the best first time experience with a Android based tablet.
Other times not so much, I do understand this is a year old tablet, not the latest and greatest (as far as the RAM goes, display can be a little better but still awesome). So at times it would be sloooooooooooow, and chuggish.
I remember reading on the forum somewhere forgot who posted it, but they were comparing a Samsung Note/Galaxy to this and it's night and day at times, games would be running a lot more smoother on those units then this one. (which I've come across when I was showing off to my cousins and they had a Note, showoff failed)
So I just have a couple of questions and maybe you guys can all help me with a few suggestions.
Is this table worth keeping? Or do I wait for the next generation of the Transformer to come out?
Should I root/custom Rom for a better experience? But then again, shouldn't a brand new out of a box tablet give me that optimum experience already?
I've searched and read multiple threads and it's given me somewhat of a direction.
But waiting for a brand new tablet with Tegra4 + more RAM otw could also be more worthwhile.....
My gf paid retail value for this tablet (which is pretty steep up in Canada 500$?), so I'm just trying to see what would be the best...either I return and wait up? or Root/Rom and try the new experience.
I know I've been a little vague,but I really don't know what else to add as I'm still a FOB (fresh on the boat :fingers-crossed with Android Tablets.

Welcome on board, I've had the same experience like you with the tablet so I am going to provide you with some thoughts of mine, there is also a thread called "would you buy this tablet again" somewere.
I'd highly recommend using an app called clean-master it's basically Androids counterpart to the famous CCleaner on a pc, whenever the tablet feels slow/laggy run it.
The display is ok, but like you said it could and should be brighter with a higher PPI but since it's more of a budget tablet Asus had to cut costs somewhere.
Better experience:
Rooting and flashing a custom ROM would be a good way to get a way better experience out of this thing. After receiving mine baack I've installed Paranoid 3.99 althoug it's not the official release it is very stable, responsible and offers a lot of customization options, stock Android ones are heavily lacking. You can also overclock this thing without any worries for example mine is running at 1,5 ghz right now and the experience is way better then before although for most of my stuff already to fast, since I am only doing notes, browsing and emailes on my tablets.
If I were you, I would wait for the TF 701 release:
Screen: 300ppi 2560 x 1600 resolution
inside: 2 gb RAM 1,9 ghz Tegra 4 cpu
according to Asus it will cost 499 $ with an included dock station, like all Asus tablets it offers an SD slot hopefully on the tablet and the dock
If you are looking for even more power the next note from Samsung might be worth a look, the screen quality will be the same but it comes with powerful 3 GB of RAM, so perfect for multitasking if you need it the downside is Samsung is looking at a 699 $ pricetag.

From what I got after reading that thread is that a lot of people are happy with this tablet.
I've decided to keep this tablet for now, and if/when the next generation one does come out, maybe I'll pawn this off and hopefully get that one.
Would you guys be able to guide me into which thread might have a list of roms that I may find that may be suitable for me?
As well as which information you would need from me to help you with a selection.

Personally I am still undecided in terms of waiting for the TF 701 or even the next generation, if Asus does I can see them packing it with 4 gig of RAM and then we can really talk about multi tasking but the TF 701 looks really great from what I've seen and read so undecided.
In terms of ROM I am big fan of Cyanogenmod and Paranoid, both are offering great customization options, superuser abilities right from the installing and of course a much smoother experience than stock Android.
Paranoid has an unofficial 3.99 (Android 4.3) build currently and Cyanogenmod is offering Nightly builds, since both aren't official releases some things might not work yet but they are for the most part stable. I would manually install them and use a tool like goomanager for flashing/updating the ROM if available.

I'm a little torn as well....the TF701 does look amazing spec wise...I'm still contemplating if I should return and grab that one....but my first tablet...kind of want to pop my Root/Custom rom cherry with this one as I've read great reviews about it from everyone on the forum so far. :good:
Is there a thread/site that you can kindly guide me to so I can take a look at these ROM's to see what they offer me and which one might suite me the best?
As well would I be able to retain the Asus Apps or would it be a clean slate ROM?
Still a little lost on some of these ROM options, and if I didn't like the ROM's is it possible to go back to factory defaults?

Things to make sure before doing that:
1. Use the right version for your bootloader of either Clock Work Mod oder Team Win Recovery Projects
2. Backup all your important apps with Titanium Backup Pro
Links Cyanogenmod, Paranoid is also known as AOSPA you can get it here they used to have an official website but can't find it right now also you are going to find a lot of versions including the newest in the Development section of this forum.
You can also use the GooManager to flash/update your ROMS, especially useful if you are using nightly builds for Cyanogenmod
as for the Asus Apps:

Steps you need
1. rooted tablet just search for motorshoper here - just subscribe to the thread it's an awesome tool to get superuser "root" access
2. download the bootloader unlocker from the Asus webpage
should work flawlessly if you aren't sure,about having root rights use an app like root checker
be aware always make sure to read the steps carefully and only download the right TWRP or CWM version for your bootloader. Also search for potential problems before atempting to downgrade versions, without having a working backup this way you are going to save yourself a bit of time and trouble.

Thats part of the fun when you are using custom ROMs there are tons outthere and thanks to the former mentioned tools trying them out and see if they fit you, is easy.
Can't wait to change my blackberry so I can enjoy custom Roms on my handy too.

Well I love their keyboards but the lack of custom roms and superuser rights is very disappointing,.at.least you can jailbreak the iPhone.
The differences are as follows:
Nightly builds are less stable and some things might not work right now but they include newer features
Stable/RC builds are more stable and most if not all features are working flawlessly
so which build to use will fully depend on what you want, if you are looking for the newest 4,3 features nightlies are the one to go, if you value a stable and feature complete build more I'd go with a RC/S type. The middleway would be to choose a monthly build sadly there aren't any available for CM right now.

I'm having a problem right now...
I got CWM installed fine (I Think)
The problem I'm having is when I go to choose zip from sdcard, it won't mound the sdcard or the internal
So I'm stuck...I can't seem to root it now.

Have you done it, in the correct order? First you need to add the ROM, then "add more Zips" select the gapps file
I've had the same problem with the external SDcard so I moved it to the internal one and it worked, but sorry no clue why it doesn't work with an external one

Here are my steps

2. Downloaded CWM

Tried installing from SDcard to root
But can't detect, another thread a nice gent, has given me the pointer to try to use TWRP.

If you are using TWRP there is also a tool called TWRP Manager: so you can normally boot your tablet with it, start the manager make all the settings and it will automatically reboot your tablet into recovery mode.
Personally I have tried CWM and TWRP liking TWRP better too.
Another step you can check:
Go into Goomanager - Settings and look for the default "save folder" if you are having your .zip files in another folder make sure, to put them into this directory. Usually it's something like goomanager/Roms/ or so.

So I have TWRP installed, man all I can say is that it is night and day in the steps of setup.
So much easier and direct.
I've downloaded goomanager I'm taking a look at it now and seeing what I can do.
I'm running Cromi-X right now and browsing no longer lags, I'm content.
Wondering what else I can do now.....

Something I'd highly recommend:
check the app privacy rules and remove all the permissions most apps shouldn't have i.e using your location, reading SD or contact lists
personally I have also overclocked my tablet it is running at 1.5 ghz now could go as far as 1.7 but I am very happy with the performance so far
another cool thing most custom roms provide is the ability to customize your lock screen.
LG says no plans for G4 Android 5.1.1 update at the moment
Are we going directly to Android M? When I had my G3 we had the same issue, no 5.1.1

So maybe, just maybe that is a reason why sales are not that great...

We are no where unless someone's keeping it hush hush. I check daily too.
The xda and tweak people are just s handfull of users ... Most buyers are regular and they don't even know xda .... If you want a phone that get every update then buy a Google phone, or a iphone. If you want a unlocked bootloader now then buy a Samsung. If you don't want those phones , then stop whining and buy a G4 or any other phone with Android on it instead of complaining. Sales are not depending on if a bootloader is unlocked or not !

Why is it essential for you to have an unlocked bootloader and root? I don't understand why its a dealbreaker - obviously you buy a phone based on its spec and features and no phone comes with 'unlocked bootloader' and 'root' as features.
XPosed is a heaving pile of **** which is buggy and unstable even at the best of times and if you start installing custom ROM's you start losing features.
I and plenty others bought this phone as it meets what we were looking at at the time. Root would be a bonus, but even then two weeks in I still can't think of anything I need root or a custom ROM for...

Downloads2SD for remapping hardcoded folders like Downloads from internal storage to the SD card.

XHangouts for configuring image quality and other things in Hangouts.
NotifyClean for suppressing annoying system notifications that cannot normally be disabled.
The list can go on, I'm sure others use a lot more than this.
I am also missing a few features that I can only use with root. AdAway, AirAudio to stream my sound to other devices, etc...

Everyones usage is different remember - I just want to use a phone and from previous experience with my S4 introducing xposed to it turned it into a buggy mess, I don't want that happening to this phone.

99% agree with you there. I got this device for the ability it has without any root/unlock. Fully agree that Xposed has never done anything good for me in my experiences...usually end up having bugs and ending up factory resetting rom I'm on.
Also confused as to why people expect that the G4 would already be unlocked or rooted. This device has been out for just over 3 weeks, fellas. Sure, there are other manufacturers (HTC which I LOVE save for their inability to understand that a good camera is a requirement in 2015) that are able to be unlocked like 30 seconds after you open the box. LG is NOT that way. The G3 was a pain in the butt last year for this from what I understand and this device is running a newer processor and supposedly more secure version of android.
In the end, I would like to have root, so I can get rid of the T-Mobile stuff...and yeah, while I can DISABLE it, that doesn't get rid of it, it's just lying dormant...I still have a disabled app taking up space on my device.

Yes this times 1000. Plus getting rid of bloat (although the LG does not have nearly as much as my Samsung devices had) plus I really want to be able to use Titanium Backup again.
Also...Not sure why everyone is so set on being on the latest version of Android at all times. I learned my lesson on that the hard way. Last device I was on was the Note 4. We were extremely irritated that we were getting Lollipop so late compared to all the other Sammy devices. Boy was I wrong to wish for it. It came with more bugs than new features, most of which made the device nearly unusable to me, resulting in my spending $280 to get the device half paid off so I could JUMP to the G4.
Rather than rolling out a new version of Android, I'm sure many users would prefer that LG work on the number of bugs that some users have experienced thusfar. That being said, 5.1 seems to be doing me pretty well for this device for me
A free wifi tethering method would be nice to have again.
I don't see the link between 5.1.1 and bad sales. If someone refused to get G4 because they won't update it to 5.1.1, I find this hilarious. 5.1.1 is a maintenance update, nothing major as I am aware, so LG can include the most important fixes from the latest available android version through OTA update, and there is no need to show you the latest android build number. 5.1 can include everything 5.1.1 got.

Have you even used Xposed recently? Root itself is fantastic, and does not harm usability. You can use apps like Greenify and Titanium Backup to remove apps and improve battery life, modify the tethering provisioning check to use the hotspot, etc. I also use Xposed on 5.1.1 and on 5.0, 4.4, etc., and I don't have any issues at all. the 10+ modules I use never have problems.
I'm keeping my rooted G3 until we can root the G4, as I need root in some form or another.

The phone is is great all on its own but I am looking forward to no ads and a tweaked Rom to hopefully get rid of the awful lagging and missed touch issues
Give the devs time. There's a lot of money pledged in the bounty board which should attract some top devs, so short of JesusFreke coming out of retirement I doubt it'll be in the next month.

If you purchase the open EUR H815 handset, you can officially unlock the bootloader through LG's Dev website, and from there install TWPR and flash SuperSU for root.
This method is not (yet?) available to other models, however.
You're correct that there are currently no unofficial methods to unlock the bootloader or root the device, yet.
Picked up the $330 deal from Newegg Ebay. The phone is charged and unmodded / not updated. The software it came with is A2017UV1.0.0B27. There is an update pending but I've not applied it yet. I'm well versed with ADB and fastboot coming from a long line of Nexus phones that I always root...
There seems to be lots of ways forward from here but I'd like to see what people recommend. It appears that an unlocked bootloader will make it so future updates cannot be applied. I've always unlocked in the past but I hope to get wifi calling (T-Mobile) in future updates (from what I understand that's on the way but not out yet?). If a non-stock rom allows wifi calling I'd be game for that as I typically am not a fan of how companies bloat the standard android rom.
Main things I want:
TWRP
(seamless?) root (primarily for AdAway and TiBackup)
Band 12
Wifi calling
Remove any potential ZTE spyware
What do you think? Unlock the bootloader and forget future ZTE updates? Keep it locked?

OTA updates work just fine with an unlocked bootloader. They do not however work if the system or recovery has been modified.
I ran stock for a few weeks. Recently switched to resurrection remix. It adds a lot of additional configuration ability. Most of the settings that were/are available in gravity box. GB is no longer possible until xposed is redeveloped for 7.
I'd say unlock the bootloader first, then either try stock or one of the aosp roms. Been on RR for just two days now, first impressions include bettery battery life and faster UI interaction.

My personal experience with Lineage (never tried RR, but I guess it's close to lineage) is overall disappointment. Half of the apps I tried didn't work, especially some 3D games. The stock camera app is unbearably bad IMO, from comparisons I decided to make I hate the overall quality of the photos... ZTE's system is not even close to full of bloatware. The only added out of the box apps are WPS Office which comes in handy, AccuWeather which is kinda questionable, true; ZTE Cares which mostly tells you to reboot your phone if you have a problem (1.14 mb, never open), this WeShare thing that you can ignore completely, and the stock music, browser, etc and Gapps. Even the calculator and some kinda useful apps are all packed on one app, and you can add shortcuts... Can't really say I've seen less bloated phones in the market...
TWRP and root are completely fine on Stock
no idea about band 12
ZTE spyware... The only thing I heard about was the location provider on A2017G which is being changed on the next update. We had Qualcomm IZat (Korea) and we got changed to Tencent (China) so that's kind of a spyware. but you can uninstall that with root
and I understand people who say that the stock ROM is ugly. Just use a launcher.
the only real advantage that I can see is the possibility to use Substratum with a pitch black theme. I could get near to 2 days battery with that stuff.

I'll be out and about tomorrow so will get a chance to play with the camera to see how well it does in RR. I got both the google camera and aosp camera apps installed. We'll see how good/bad the pics come out. I don't expect dslr results out of a cell phone camera anyway so camera quality isn't at the top of the list for me.
Same with games. Can't remember the last one I played on a phone. Most of my use is email/web/navi/voip. Long battery life is at the top of my list. With typical usage, I could go 2 days between charges and still have ~40% remaining. If I get 3 days now with RR with similar usage/sot, I'll be happy camper. Not to mention, the phone is more responsive.
Stock isn't bad until you've tried something else, then you get a feel for how heavy the ui is.
Band 12 is supported on both tmo and att as far as i know. I know i've seen it a few times on att.

I'm on 7.1.1 with backed up stock bootloader and recovery. Rooted with a modified version of Magisk and passing the safetynet check.
So far, signal strength seems good and the addition of wifi calling is fantastic....
I don't have T-Mobile, but I believe the latest update, v. 7.1.1 B19 includes WiFi calling.
ETA: Oops. I guess that's what I get for getting distracted and posting a response an hour after I started it.
I am soliciting info about your experiences with Riru Xposed on your S5e.
My experience was that it seemed to really slow the tablet down (I say 'seemed' because at the same time I was also doing some extreme debloating/deleting that could have very likely caused the problem--I know, I should have installed Riru Xposed on to a well performing/healthy tablet--my bad).
Anyways, either my debloating/deleting, or installing Riru Xposed caused the tablet to be so laggy that I uninstalled Riru. This didn't improve responsiveness so I then enabled *everything*. Still the same, so I took the step of going back to stock and rooting again.
This where I am now, with only a few packages disabled and a still-snappy, well performing device. Before I start messing with Riru Xposed again I'd like to know how well others have fared using it.
The Riru variant I used before was 'SandHook'--does the 'YAHFA' variant affect device performance differently?
Have you installed Riru? and are you happy with your tablet's performance?
Do you have any advice/suggestions?

I'd noticed UX slow-down after installing Riru Xposed before, but this time it was extreme. I did a bit of investigating, and discovered that one of the 'phone' apps was crashing multiple times a second. (In my rush to fix it, I didn't collect more specific info).
I did what I have always done in the past on my rooted WiFi-only devices—I deleted all phone related folders and apps, and rebooted. All is good now.
A, hopefully inclusive, list of stuff I deleted in the data/data, data/user, system/app, and system/priv-app folders on my T720 WiFi-only tablet:

Hi, I'm curious as to what would be better. De-bloating and or deleting stock apps or installing custom rom ? Recently picked up a Tab S5e after price dropped to $399.99 for 6GB/128GB wifi unit. Now to decide on what to do with it, so slimmed down stock or custom? Now that it appears some time has gone by how do you rate your experience to date? Not sure if custom rom was an option available when you started with yours or not but would like to study options before making a decision. Info and insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Icould go on about Huawei being a 'privately owned company' that is, ofc, at the very least influenced by the Chinese Communist Party and their goal of "EA3 Tracking"—my term for Google also, that means "Tracking Everyone Everywhere Eveything Always", but I won't. ?
I'm using Lineage OS. Still on 15.1 just because it's my secondary tablet now, and just haven't got around to it.

Almost sounds like talking to myself, but in a good way. I too cannot stand google's data thieving and lies on top of lies. They already know more about everyone than most people understand. I have tried explaining it to some that can't understand we forget **** from time to time and google keeps record of it all. Therefore they know more about you than you do because they don't forget. Anyway, appreciate the response. Just downloaded LuisROM Unofficial RR even though EOL was a couple months ago. Not really wanting to go to Android 10 as I'm not always chasing latest and not necessarily greatest. Have to see how it takes to signature spoofing for micro-g. Finally couldn't agree more about Huawei, have one of their little tabs that I can't unlock or root and have a working twrp I ported for it when bootloader was unlockable (owned several) didn't think about it being un-lockable till I picked it up dirt cheap frp locked on ebay. I woke up this morning and the first thing that popped in to my head was, "I just wrote a Huawei rant about a Samsung tablet on xda!" When I wrote it I had just finished a lengthy 'discussion with a, lets say naive friend, about Huawei, so I had all my Huawei/CCP stuff loaded up and ready to fire. ? The Google stuff still stands, though. Also, what wrote about LOS 15.1.
I'll never buy another Huawei anything because the aforementioned locking, in addition to my newfound distrust of anything to do with that company. I bought a Huawei M5 tablet a couple of years ago and had to pay some online site $15 bucks for an unlock key so I could root! Pissed me off so much!

I am considering moving to a Oneplus 8 Pro or maybe 8T. I have been using an HTC U11 running Team Venom roms for years but with them no longer developing and no updates coming it is time to consider moving on.
I have read some posts on rooting and it seems pretty straight forward. I'm assuming that TWRP will eventually have a recovery unless there is information to the contrary that I haven't seen? How does the Oneplus 8 run with the stock rom but with root access? I know this is subjective but would you recommend another rom rather than staying stock if I root?
I feel like I will regret not having an external SD card but I guess that can't be a deal breaker since a lot of phones don't have them now.

Hello there,
Long time HTC use myself since the beginning (G1 days)
I have to say that the 8 pro is a stellar device which absolutely ticks single box, plus it looks slightly funky too which as an ex HTC owner I really like that.
TWRP actually is not needed at all.
Magisk ROMs install using magisk, AOSP, PA, pixel ROMs all install using a bat file inst adb / fastboot, to rescue you can do several things.
For magisk ROMs that fail simply boot to safe mode then reboot and they'll be deactivated.
For custom ROM recovery you have several choices, the main one is the MSM tool which is an official OnePlus deployment / maintenance tool that can return you to stock in a few minutes, the other would be to extract the payload.bin of a firmware (the ROM part) then use the installer bat you used to install the custom ROM.
Kernels can be installed using a kernel manager like ex kernel manager so no worries there.
As for a functional TWRP. If you remain on Android 10 then you have it. 11 is currently being worked on and is making great strides from some talented Devs.
In all it's a good situation, the phone is brilliant; no two ways about it, the community is thriving and when you notice it go quiet it's usually because everything for everyone is working perfectly, I personally couldn't go back to HTC now unless they dropped a true beast of a phone.
The only gripe I have about the whole device and development community is the camera on custom ROMs, it's GCam or third party software which for most is ok. But I missed the stability of OOS and using all four cameras.
That being said there more than enough to keep you occupied and flashing the best ROMs you'll find on XDA, that will only continue and get stronger.

That was my impression based on what I've read. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.
I'm most likely going to pick one up sometime in next few weeks or so and I'm thinking about rooting and running the stock rom just to see how it goes and be able to make full system backups just in case. I'm sure more development will be done and it should be viable for a good while.

Yea my thoughts exactly, initially I wanted to root and go a bit nuts but the stock OS is actually really well made, I use CPL launcher to give me the extra options visually.
I turn off zram and make a few CPU / GPU tweaks in ex manager but beyond that I don't need anything else.
If you can't be bothered debloating or you want mods with the stock OOS then choose xXx or R-Ice.
Again there will be more.
From what I read, the 8T is a downgrade from the 8 Pro. I'm looking to see the 9 Pro, and if it's not great, I'm going to get another 8 Pro. =)

Is there an 8T pro?
The 9 pro should be a beast but....
Not sure where they can go in regards to innovation but they're on a particular path now, but the size can't be bigger, it's already IP certified and has wireless charging, RAM is maxed out.
I think the major changes are going to be the battery, maybe the cameras (again), possibly audio and hopefully efficiency.
Maybe a more dedicated gaming mode or some aftermarket peripherals like the ROG and razor.
Time will tell but I like the formula they have with the 8 pro, the build quality is superb.
Perhaps the screen will be upgraded too.
The 9 & 9 Pro are sounding better and better! Can't wait...

Yep that's kind of what I was saying.. (well I wasn't far off) same size, camera upgrade, no word on gaming but I like the direction they were going with that, other things like wireless charging and IP have been done and as such they're staying, no word on audio but hopefully they do bump that up.
I think Moore's law is finally dying on mobile chips the 865 and coupled adreno in the 8 pro are stupendous chips, the games that it's capable of running beats the Shields Nvidia chip which is considerable when you think about it and unless the 888 doubles up, it's an evolution rather than revolutionary chip In comparison.
I'm not sure I'd bother getting the 9 or 9 pro, I don't see the upgrade worth it. If I was on a 6 or maybe a 7 pro then perhaps but the 8 pro for the first time in my android life actually is going to last it's contract duration due to it being such a strong phone, unless maybe you've got screen issues.

Was a HTC fun. Awesome phones, but soft upgrades suck.
I recomend 8 Pro. Now you can buy it cheap from online sales forums. I pay 570 euro for just the phone (like new). I already have warp charger and cables. 8/128 gb new cost 900 euro.
Unfortunately 9 pro will not be much of a difference. "Leaks" SD 888, some camera updates, 65w warp charge. Wireless still 30w. Still Great. I use it. It's awesome.
512gb memory it will hurt the price bad.
My hope was that they give us a square flat screen with no creap front camera.

I did not try to root on Android 11. So i rollback to Android 10 (some months ago)
My safe instalation: i was on Android 11, i go back (rollback zip) to Android 10.

Steps to upgrade and keep root:
1- Uninstall ALL Magisk modules (if you have any). Reboot to System.
2- install Oos stable or open beta with Settings > Local upgrade . DON'T reboot!!!
3- Open Magisk > Install. Choose (Install to inactive slot after' OTA). DON'T reboot !!!
4- Back in Magisk > Install > Direct install.
5- Reboot to system.
Now you are on the latest version of Android and root.

As @null0seven said there's a few, the bootloader one is one of mine.
I have a payload dumper thread in guides, it outlines all the methods to root, the one Null has mentioned is the bootloader unlock although the root method is a little dated now. Probably best to stick with booting rather than flashing patched images.
There's two slots on the OnePlus 8 Pro.
A and B
They can carry different images independently, although only one can be used at a time.
Give the booting a patched image of the guide a look at it's the easiest.
When it comes to updating simply remove active magisk modules, take the update but don't reboot or the update will replace the patched boot image.
Whilst in the above state magisk has the ability to patch on the fly, this is due to the update alternating boot image slots.
So the method of root when taking an OTA (which must be full btw) is to take the update then without rebooting, open magisk and flash to open slot, then simply reboot and you're back in the new OS with root and all your data/apps and storage has been retained as you left it.
All this is outlined in the guide.
If you get stuck let me know or just pop a question in there, either myself or someone else will help you. But the guides should be though, plus nearly every scenario has played out in there so check search too.

No worries man.
It's really easy tbh.
My advice is make friends with payload dumper and oxygen updater, always use the beta version of magisk, just change the channel to beta then update.
Beyond that it's a doddle.
Rooting was easier than it looked and was successful. Thanks for the guide @dladz!
I'm struggling trying to get R/W access so I can debloat. Titanium Backup says it can't find the apk, Root Uninstaller says it can't aquire the proper permissions and from what I have read there is no way to grant access in the newer versions of Android. Is my only option to flash a new ROM or is there another way to remove apps that I don't want?

you're very welcome mate, glad you're sorted.
So what i would do is one of two things. You can either uninstall the apps using ADB or you can freeze them, tbh freezing has been spot on for me.
I've nuked with ADB the ones i really hate.
OR NoLimits xXx has a great debloater tool.
System doesn't have access anymore unless it's unmounted i believe, so magisk can obtain access (i could be wrong there but i think that's how it is able to make changes there)

Private Seller, met on offer up so everything was cash. Original box and charger. And Day 1 screen protector on the front(so no scratches I can see for now both front and back). Bezel has the most wear. Paint chip on top right and tiny paint wear from repeated probing of the sim car slot hole. Overall I feel like it's a good buy for the price I got it at
