S20 will NOT have upgraded fingerprint scanner - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

There was news of the new larger in screen scanner with 17x the scanning area. This turns out not to be true. It will be same as s10 series. Not a big deal to me because I have mastered the one on my s10+, but some folks will not like that.

Probably registering the same finger multiple times.

As someone upgrading from the S8, will I really notice a difference? I've heard mixed reviews on Samsung's under-display finger print scanner.

Yes, i've had the s7/s8 and s9 and they were much better than the s10, night and day difference. However i recently got rid of the original screen protector and went with the bestbuy clearplex one and its much better imo. But still not as good as the older finger print scanners.

Sensor has been great for me. The biggest tip I can give is to register your primary finger twice. It works wonders.

Have you tried adding the primary finger you used twice? I've owned almost every s-series phone and note since the note 5 and I feel like this is on of the most consistent scanners I have used.

I would if i could but i already used up the 4 available slots, i use 4 primary fingers to unlock the phone lol

I have really dry hands so it really gives me issues recognizing my finger prints, all my past s7, s8, note 8 all worked perfectly, but I really despise the S10s reader

I register both thumbs twice from natural holding position.
1st left thumb one handed natural hold
2nd left thumb 2 handed natural hold(straight up and down)
One handed is an angle.
Key is USE YOUR THUMBS
Also follow the guide animated fingerprint and do the part of your thumb that gets filled in. Its literally instant for me. I can do a short video to show. Now with amazon "Tamoria" brand uv tempered glass(identical to whitestone except no tray, just use a level surface. But 50$ vs 15$ is a no brainer. She also allows for learning curve if you mess up and honestly say how you messed up. Best customer service ever!
Anyway...... with that on, you have to hold thumb on for 1 second then pull away.
With factory protector, naked, and iq shield(and zagg) type protectors- do not hold thumb on until unlock. Put finger on and release quickly- thats it. Hold it on longer when registering of course.
I am going to make videos. I am letting the old lady have my s10+ and I got a new Tamoria glass UV protector for it and will record the install when I get my s20 ultra, and also I will record protector and non protector fingerprint register and use after register. Just give me a week until I get my new phone plz. I am happy to help and hope I do help people to see that this is superior(slightly) and faster than the old fingerprint scanners.
There are so many misleading videos, tutorials, and reviews on this and none of them have it quite right.

The screen keeps getting bigger we can register toes too!

Is there a face unlock in addition to the fingerprint? I actually have gotten used to the face unlock on my pixel4xl.

Same here, I am used to the P4 face unlock.
There is a face unlock feature on the s20 but its not secure, so use at your own risk.

I don't know how it works since I am coming from a pixel as well. If the face unlock is good enough, I am willing to risk it.

I pre ordered through Samsung this time. T mobile wants to much money down for jump customers. I bought the phone for a little more than the down payment T mobile wanted.

I cancelled my jump a long time ago. Their prices for down payments + the monthly jump cost no longer justifies itself.

That's disappointing. Note 10 plus scanner sucks imo. Prefer above screen then

S5 fingerprint scanner like iphone? (Without swip)

Is there any way we can tweak the fingerprint scanners unlocking procedure without swipe?
Because its a pain using fingerprint scanner one hand. Thanks!
Sent from my SM-P605 using Tapatalk
No. The iPhone can do this due to the shape of the home button, and the amount of the fingerprint that can be read without movement because of that. The shape of the home button on the S5 works against this as it only reads a thin strip of the print unless you move the digit.
The only possibility I can think would be a hack to reduce the amount of the fingerprint required for a positive ID. And even if that was possible it would by it's very nature reduce the security offered by the fingerprint reader which could cause issues with the Paypal certification.
Perhaps the videos I have seen were overly simplistic and I'm not getting my S5 until Friday so can't speak from experience, but using the thumb to unlock looked a simple procedure to me and easy enough to do one handed.

Finger print sensor position bad press

Is anyone else sick of the bad press this phone is getting for fingerprint sensor ? Many site saying the phone has a major flaw and buyers beware. Granted it's not the best but I personally do not use the sensor and with 3 other options to unlock the phone i think it's a moutain out of mole hill issue.
Maybe this is a big issue to security minded people?
You said yourself it's not an issue because you don't use it. The fingerprint sensor is in an absolutely awful place. This is the first phone in the past several years I won't be able to use it, and will have to use another method. I setup face recognition, but I'm sure it's going to have issues in dark rooms, plus it can be fooled by a photo of yourself.

Yes heard it is no where near as fast to use iris or facial recognition. Samsung obviously things an earlier release is more important than sensor placement as we know this was a last minute hash job just hope it does not ditract to much from what promises to be the best phone of the year
I've been using the fingerprint sensor all day without an issue.
Agreed. While I would have preferred it to be in the center like the Pixel or V20, finding it with a case on your phone is extremely easy. I'm sure I won't even think about it in couple weeks.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
The finger print scanner works great for my right hand. I can easily find it and use it.
MY left hand wants to go to the heartbeat sensor. It will take some getting use to, but its not unusable.
True it would of been better if it was in the middle center by itself but hahh it doesnt break the phone for me.
4 digit passcode as like, forever.
It's all marketing, any publicity is still publicity. Remember the makers of GTAV paid for negative press. On purpose! Don't be blind to how "it" works.
Again. 4 digit passcode. If that. I don't live in fear.
it always good to have finger print sensor on front. i always use the sensor for samsung pay. you may need to look backside and front side for authenticating a transaction.

I use it without fail. The position on the back is not a problem for me. I prefer it on the back.
While not ideal, the fingerprint placement isn't a huge issue for me. As once i got my case i can honestly find it easily and not worry so much of smudging the camera.
I use my phones on the desk, table, and so on and the back sensor is an extra step for me, doesn't matter where it is or how well it works. Neither is facial or iris a work around because you have to pick up the phone. I've read many comment that after a time you become accustomed to rear scanners, might even like it better. Didn't happen with me, I've gone through a couple and I like them less and less the more I used them. While there is no perfect placement for every situation there is a reason why Apple and Samsung are trying to get the scanner under the screen, it's the placement that has the most strengths and fewest weaknesses. I'm a Note man anyways and as reports seem to indicate that we have hope Samsung will get the scanner they failed to get under this screen under that one it's a no brainer for me. My current phone is only a few months old and I picked up an LG watch sport the other day to get my toy need in check for a while. Assuming the international Note 8 can be rooted it will be my next phone.
Ive been wondering.. since its already in a bad position would it be even harder for me to reach it since im left handed.. what do u think?

Can i have some feedback from the S8 owners?

I'm planning to buy S8 next week, so i wanted to hear some opinions, impressions, experiences from the people who already own this phone.
I tryied the phone at the store, it looks nice, it feels nice and it works great, but i would still like to hear what it's like on the daily basis, how's the battery life, does it lag after some time....etc
And one more thing. I've noticed some red tint at the top border, was it just me, or other people noticed the same thing?
Thanks.
I would honestly describe this phone as being the closest phone to perfect that i have ever owned! The only flaw is the finger print scanner! Battery life is very good! Display is excellent, Ergonomically its probably one of the best phones on the market! Likewise the camera is great! There is nothing bad about the device! If someone was to suggest they prefer another handset over the s8 however then iam sure it would purely be personal preference as oppose to choosing it because its better then the S8! Even the software on the S8 is massively improved over previous versions!! But....... just my opinion!!

Location mostly! Haven't even really bothered using it as a result! Tried it out initially and seemed accurate etc but the location just makes using it awkward and its just not as convenient for unlocking the device quickly as it was when we had it on the front! All samsung had to do was place it under the camera as oppose to right beside it and it would be alot better! The haptic feedback home button is pretty cool and actually kinda reminds me of using the finger print sensor on the s7 as you can essentially just press where the home button would of been and it unlocks the device! The downside being of course that anyone can do so as its not an actual security feature!!
I got my S8 approximately 3 weeks ago. I've just come from the iPhone 7 I find the S8 Amazing and it is very sleek. The software is pretty good and very customisable, the battery life is brilliant. The only problem is Samsung have this annoying thing called Bixby which is a siri want to be. It is not possible to deactivate or disable it. The only way to work around this you have to freeze it. Had some random bugs with the Bluetooth. Otherwise amazing phone.
I've had mine around 3 weeks. I have the Samsung clear case so I have no problem with the fingerprint sensor. I'll be putting a DecalGirl skin on so when I'm using the Rhino Bumper I'll still have a tactile nudge. Came from an International S6 (actually the same one you seem to have). Bit better battery life, no lag, amazing screen. I was surprised at how comfortable it is to hold and I'm happy to have an SD card again. I was hesitant to give up my S6 after it got Nougat as it was like a new phone. Can't imagine going back now.
One of the best devices this year... It's a Star on XDA!
It's an amazing phone. Best one I've ever had. I've had it since 4/18. Finger print location doesn't bother me at all. You'll love it!
Perfect. I did configured the fingerprint sensor but I dont use it much. I prefer the iris scanner, its fast. The rest you read it already. Screen, features, hardware, design, battery, you wont regret it

I have the international variant so experience may vary. I love it. Not the biggest fan of the fingerprint scanner position but after a couple days, it became natural. It's very smooth. Smoother than the S7 I'd have to say.
Battery life is amazing. Can easily get over a day of life, even 2 days sometimes. I haven't experienced any lag over time.
The red tint you noticed was probably burn in. That's the only problem I understand with the phone since it's an OLED display. I keep mine in immersive mode and use gestures for the navbar instead (I prefer it actually).
There was an issue with some displays at launch having a red tint which was resolved through software update.
Here my review. It has some profanity so if u don't like hearing cursing don't watch. But it's pretty popular on YouTube at 29k views
You will get used to fingerscanner location and it will not bother. Also useless bixby button can be remapped without root, so no prob here too.
Great phone!
Fps works fine and is ok to reach on my s8 but not for me on the + model.
Face recognition and iris scanner works fine.
The new Samsung Experience Ui is slick and fast.
I'm in the uk so have the exynos version.
The display just pops.
For me the dimensions of the s8 hit my sweet spot and it's really comfortable to hold.
The s8+ version for me was just too big and to me felt top heavy.
It's as slippery as any other glass form factor phone.
I'm using....
Samsung Screen Protector- the film type.
Black Dragon dbrand back skin.
RhinoShield Bumper.

Great video man :good:
Only issue with my S8: Display light shines through right under the earpiece. Someone else noticed that?
Apart from that the phone is close to perfect for me.
Do not forget THE SCREEN SCRATCHES VERY EASY.
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
I get a consistent 5 hours of screen on time every day. And as the other guy noted this screen does scratch easily. I had a buddy that scratched his pretty bad and had no idea how he did it. Haven't scratched mine yet after a couple weeks with no screen protector though. I came from a 6S+ and a note 5 before that and I'm pretty happy with this phone after flashing my unlocked Verizon version to an unbranded Canadian firmware.
uk neverlocked has problems "emergency call only"
I recommend to you that you buy the french version

I had a s7 edge which is dead last week when trying to put it in water :'(. So I bought s8. So thats what I find:
1/ I really didn't like the unlock features.. the fingerprint sensor is in the back so it is just useless (ps you can save 4 fingers but I dont know how my 4 fingers can access to the fingerprint). The iris scanner cannot be used if the phone is a little bit far (in the car for exemple when you are driving I used to unlock my s7 directly with finger). To be able to unlock your s8 when its far you must use face recognition it is quick but it is useless at night because it uses camera. (Ps1: you cannot see your lockscreen before/without unlocking. Ps2: you cannot use iris and facerecognition at the same time so you must choose night compatible or far compatible).
2/ the screen ration is just so bad.. videos/apps/games are not adapted with display ratio so the phone will show two black bars at the top and at the buttom of the screen + the nav bar is, in the most cases, present in the screen and dont disappear automatically so there is no sense of "infinity screen" and I cant feel it.
3/ the battery takes more time with my s7 edge then my new s8.
So I really felt that s7 edge was better (for me) but samsung should not tell people that phones are water resistant because its not always true. (Sorry for bad english).

Ergonomics (in-hand feel)

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I had a good hour hands on time today at Samsung 837. I like the feel. It's a more professional feel. Premium all the way around. Solid. Sturdy. These are just a few words to describe how it felt. Slightly larger than the S8+ (current device) I get my free Note 8 sometime in September. From the sound I should get it a few days or maybe a week before normal consumers. Feel free to ask my any questions. I'll be glad to answer what I can.

How bad is the fingerprint reader placement? I've come to like the simplicity of the front mounted fingerprint reader (easier to unlock my phone when it's on my car dock). And what do you think of Bixby?

I assume it depends on the size of your hand. I already have 2 TPU cases and its going to be a non-issue for me because I have somewhat large hands. My current device is the LG V20 and with it side by side to the Note 8 cases the V20 can completely eat the Note 8.

Fingerprint sensor is a none issue for me. I have probably smaller than average hands. It's a little further than the S8+. We had a chance to speak to the leader software dev for Bixby. I got put on the spot and was asked how I liked it. I told them that I understand that it's still being developed and will get better with time. They didn't accept that and so I said day to day tasks it still needs help and Google is much faster and more accurate with the results. He said thank for the feed back and that they are working tirelessly to make just as good if not better than Google voice. Iris is near instant and same with the FP sensor.

That's my concern as well. I think the scanner is too far up and for Samsung to say they listen to their customers is really taking the biscuit, because this has and is an issue with the s8+. They don't care as long as as it's design happy for them to be honest.
I have a large enough hand that I can reach my thumb to the other side of the screen on a large phone.
The Note 8, felt great in my hand, as a former Note 7 owner (I still have one but stopped using it) this phone simply builds on the Note 7 feel, the phone is sturdy, anything that moves only because they engineered it to. It feels refined and looks great. I can't help but want to throw a case at it the minute I receive mine.
However, the placement of the fingerprint reader makes little sense to me.
The fact that it's off to the side isn't even the issue, it was simply difficult to locate, sure I'm sure i'll get used to it, but I currently have the V20 and it took me no effort to locate the scanner in the back to turn on my screen.
I wish the Note 8 fingerprint scanner was also a button.
I would read a comment from Donald Trump on this topic
I was in the store today, wanted to compare to my 6p. It's barely taller and a smidge thinner, was surprised it's so small. Next to the Galaxy 8+it's almost the same size but without the rounded corners. Very manageable if you've been using a large phone

you are in luck if you want to sell your Note 7 as samsung is currently buying them back for around 800 no questions asked. i didn't send mine in either and i just sold it via craigslist to a guy who is about 3 hops from samsung. now, you can't get 800 for it yourself - has to be shipped specially and has to get to the right dealer but, this is a quiet little factoid that is not very well known and i thought i would post it here. i got 380 for mine - it helps offset the note 8 i pre-ordered.

i don't think so - i'm pretty sure you have to sell to a person who deals in phones. i found a dude on craigslist specifically looking for them. he resells them to someone who resells them to a dealer that then ships them to korea. like i said, this seems to be a quiet thing - i don't think you would have much luck trying to approach samsung directly, but you never know.
if you do look on craigslist for phone buyers, be safe - only meet them where there are cameras and people. it's a good sign if they are just as careful as you.

I reckon calling Samsung is absolutely worth a try. It's a product recall due to safety concerns. I wouldn't be surprised if they took it back at full price.
If you bought the phone via a third party, you should probably try them first.
Nothing to lose, right?
Back to the topic 'in hand', just received my Note and while I love the phone overall it's WAYYY too big in the hand. Can't reach anything (I have probably normal sized hands), and it's two hands all the way. Real disappointment. Even this keyboard on the screen looks like it's for the hard of sight, it's so large. Almost the size of my kindle. Oh well, will be returning and going back to my S8...

use swiftkey for keyboard and resize it smaller or just resize the Samsung keyboard
Is it very slippery?
Don't have the phone yet, but I bought a case. The case is almost exactly the same width as my Note 4 in a Commuter case. It's about a half an inch taller. I'm more concerned with the width, so glad that it is what I'm used to. Now I just need to get the phone, so that I can put it in the case.
Anyone else think the phone feels heavy? Came from a note 3 and this thing feels way heavier to me.
I will say wish the phone was wider. Overall the phone feels well balanced to the point you don't have to hold it tight.

I owed any note for eu avaible. Actuelly note 4. Yesterday my 8 arrived. Im sorry but its a complete design (handeling) failure. The benefit of the note seriaes was to use thw spen to do notes, sketches etc. For this you need space to do the input. For this reason you need some kind of widthnees of the inputplace. Any of the manual notebooks, sketchbooks or any other kind note papers, even postit, do have an format like din, 1:1, 4:3, 3:2 but nothing you are doing your notes on is 16:whatever...

Indisplay fingerprint reader VS. Dedicated one on the back

Do you think the new indisplay fingerprint reader will be fast as the one on the back?
I saw a hands on video of the OPPO r17 and it looked like the fingerprint reader was not very fast and also it could unlock the screen maybe 3/5 times.
Can we expect a better, newer generation in the op6t or do you think it will be the same chipset?

FOD will hopefully be the same as r17 but there might be an option of combining FOD with the FU along with Raise to wake and Double tap to wake like other OEM's to make it faster thus the device would scan and FP and look for the Face at the same time.
The tech is still relatively new so we can't expect the same speed as traditional FPs
We will have to wait for the official announcement and the reviews to judge the actual experience :good:
I'll take works every time over fast all day every day.
I think it's going to be ultrasonic actually.
The oppo used an optical sensor which is slower and less secure
There must be both !!
for a $1000 phone I demand to include every single feature possible !!
and half an inch thick phone is totally fine !!
and 1lb of weight is totally fine as well.
I think I'll miss the back scanner, the front one cant possibly be faster, at least not for another year or 2? we're getting like some of the first generations, if its JUST as fast, if not faster, great. but I unlock it sometimes before it even sees my face. I don't want to front scanner and wait for face even though that will be faster than just the scanner on the front...
I might even skip it and just get the 6, from my 5t red.
anyone think the same or just me? haha...
I dislike them in the back because I use a phone on the desk frequently enough it becomes an annoyance. Face ID is no help either in that situation so I've been looking forward to embedded scanners becoming a thing.

true, i usually have it facing the table when im out so its slightly less anti social LOL
Will be faster than contemporary optical FP readers if oneplus pays special attention to(nature of oneplus), but can no way be as fast as the traditional capacitive ones.
I am excited about this. One thing that caught my attention was the rumor of the fingerprint and time always being on, even when the phone is sleep. Has OnePlus confirmed this or is it still a rumor? Cause if it's true I feel it will be a major selling point to the phone.
I think I would prefer it like this rather than being on the back. Still using 3T and idm it on the front. Can't wait for the 6t
It's better that they are investing in this technology. Apple generally waits a couple of years before they try it. It's cost efficient to wait off, given the size of your company. If your trying to get more people interested in the phone; then you probably want to invest in this technology. Again, this is OnePlus's first time with a deal with a U.S. carrier. What selling points are going to make people buy the phone when they walk in the T-Mobile store? OnePlus still has not revealed the other ways users will be able to unlock the phone. We are still in for big surprises.
The major selling point is going to be it's a phone that largely specs the same as the usual suspects which are significantly more expensive. Going back to the embedded scanner it's the best choice once fully working simply because the phone can be unlocked while sitting at rest, you don't get that with face, iris, etc. Apple, Samsung, and everyone else will be on board as soon as they can create the user experience they want. It's the uncontested next step.
Fearless prediction... We're not too far from two factor ID for pay: fingerprint AND face. Meanwhile I'd expect the fingerprint will serve to simply unlock the phone. The smart guys seem to think this is the logical middle step because embedded cameras are still a decade out and everyone wants the screen sans notch which means a lift for the selfie cam. The lift becomes much more viable when it is only needed for selfies compared to something like the Find X where it is used for unlock. To get there in the near term you need embedded fingerprint scanners even if they weren't arguably the most viable overall option for bio-metric security.
I'd agree with Krabman. OnePlus is clearly trying to pull ahead of the race. They want their product to stay innovative. They want you to think of the OnePlus brand as a step up from your everyday Android device. Not to say that the Galaxy and Pixel aren't innovate if their own way; but OnePlus wants their own niche in the Android market. One could say; they are trying to be more like Apple. What they have to do is make sure their features and OS is unique. Eventually they should invest in some television ads. It can get expensive; but T-Mobile could always pitch in.
We're still in for a treat come time October 17th. Hopefully the phone will be available for purchase on that date and we won't have to wait a second longer. I'd really love to go out to a T-Mobile store during that week and pay for the phone.
I read at trustedreviews.com about the Huawei Mate 20 Pro that the indisplay fingerprint reader ONLY works for unlocking the phone and not for apps, that can use dedicated fingerprintreaders e.g. for banking apps etc.
If this is correct and also the same with the 6T that would be a HUGE minus for this technology!
I dunno, I think the rear scanned is better for me,,, I can pick it up with one hand and unlock it with my index finger, a front scanner will require my thumbs for this or two hands. But............. I will adapt. My 5x is long in the tooth and the Nexus atmosphere or comradery is no more, with OnePlus seemingly having it.
Yeah, sounds like you need ultrasonic for banking and we're getting optical. Phones are in kind of a weird place right now. To me it's like phones are suddenly stuck in a place where we all know embedded scanners and cameras are around the corner and it's clear now that the goal lies there. All screen, ultrasonic, embedded cameras, so on. It leaves what's out there now a little disappointing even though things are better than ever because I know that stuff is coming and I'm sure I want it.

On Vivo Nex S is working with app too as banking app etc IMO.
So it would be big negative surprised if 6T does not support.

As for the fingerprint scanner I’m sure would be very reliable and smooth even being optical not ultasonic
Ultrasonic fingerprint will see next year with S10+.
It’s not ready for mass production.
Even the 2 little brother S10 series will use optical as ultrasonic is quite expensive.
Non to mention that Vivo is already working on 4th generation optical scanner that would be even better so it wouldn’t make surprising if 6T using that 4th generation but even not and use 3rd like Vivo Nex I’m sure would be fast and reliable.

I was the same but when I went from note 4 to like LG v20 or something I completely changed. you'd never wanna go back to front. the ease taking out of pocket, on table if turned upside down. if not upside down just double tap.
I'd go front again tomorrow but its slower tech than back. I don't wanna go slower and pay more for first generation. and I saw the oneplus 6 on best gear for like £382 8gb 128gb. not bad. I'd actually prob get that right now from my 5t until newer front screen scanner comes in
I think a little sphere busting is in order... I just touched the front of my phone. Twice. At no time did I think, "Ok, this is my third try at touching the front of my phone, if I don't make it this time maybe I'll have a run at the back and see if I can touch that."
More seriously: I dislike back scanners and unfortunately I've been stuck with a number of em because it's whats been out there on a lot of devices recently. Practice hasn't helped me make friends with them either, I like them less every time I own one. This because touching the front is neither easier nor harder than touching the back and you cant use a back scanner without picking up the phone when working with it on the desk. Double tap is fine but you have to go sans security to use it which isn't always viable. Face ID has the same problem, when working off the desk you have to pick up the phone to light it up. Meanwhile with the front scanner you touch it and go about your business without the extra step. Going back to normal use when not on a surface, yeah, the front is just as easy to touch as the back. To me the best feature of the 6T is the scanner being located in the objectively least compromised placement.
