I think you must on 340 before go to 060 because 318 is very old and it has some differences in the system and data.
Overwise, you must wipe data and sideload it to prevent bootloop.

Follow the directions in this thread on this site:
mrichiem [ROOT][RECOVERY]Asus Zenfone Max ZC550KL - Root and TWRP
This worked for me with a Zenfone Max purchased from Hong Kong
probably worth mentioning that I was unable to get windows to load adb drivers.
I used Debian Jessie without any problems. Ditch Windows Seven, its out of date.

I hope you're not using TWRP. It will fail.
You can grab the OTA and sideload it using the stock recovery. For OTA links, refer to this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3/how-to/7-0-ze520kl-ota-update-links-t3579753

Are you refering to @Malinkutang's post?
I have ported TWRP for the Zenfone Max M1 ZB555KL (X00PD). It is not 100% but should be fine for simply flashing a file. Find it here.

@thekrishna, where did you find that image?
When trying to install, it fails for me:
Updater process ended with ERROR: 1
Error installing zip file '/external_sd/DolbyPlus-Oreo_8.1.zip'
Please help me.
I'm on LineageOS 15.1, rooted with Linage's own AddonSU, and use TWRP 3.2.3-0 (the "twrp(pie)stock_boot" version that is floating around on this forum and I think first was posted by jide1).
Update: I could install the package - - turns out it's a Magisk module created by matt1313 and you need Magisk to be able to flash it in TWRP.
I can confirm that it brings back audio in calls in both directions. It also makes other sounds (button taps, music) quite loud, like I had to tune the volume down to 2/10- 1/10. And for me, the playback quality of the music is somewhat degraded when listening through the built-in speakers. But this is a side effect.
My issue is that it needs Magisk, which is a security problem. I wish the benefits could be applied without Magisk...

Im trying to root Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2, Bootloader Unlocked. But after "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" stuck on logo and thn black screen happen. Try to restart it but back to stock recovery. Anyone can help my issue? sorry bad english.
I don't think there is an official recovery available for max pro m2. Which recovery did u flashed ? Also did u unlocked through the official method by installing the apk from asus website?

I guess not until any developer makes a official supported recovery for our device. It's a pretty new device so maybe in few days time someone will do it, it's good to wait for now.

Do not worry brother, this device will get the official or unofficial twrp. Just wait for sometime, development will kick start soon.

Never flash any file that is not meant to be flashed on your device but the other. I know they are many view-thirsty websites claiming to guide you through the rooting process of pro m2 but they're all fake, even telling people to flash recovery of Mi A1 on Pro M2. These people don't care about those who are new to modding phones and could potentially brick their device. I wish that they get punished for such dirty practices.

Ok. But wait for correct method of flashing custom recovery. You could have easily messed up your device. When it's available, xda will be first place to get it.

After flashing through fastboot. Press and hold power + vol down buttons till twrp logo shows up. And in twrp confirm that "swipe to allow modifications"
I think the fastboot command is wrong
Zenfone max pro m2 runs on android oreo right? For oreo the fastboot command is:
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk twrp.img where twrp is the file name. Try that.
