Pixel 4 XL insists on roaming regardless of settings - Google Pixel 4 Questions & Answers

I'm on Sprint, and while at work and one path home for some reason my phone refuses to stop roaming. Setting it to home only vs. automatic does nothing. Disabling and rebooting does nothing. Do I seriously need root just to do this? I'll stand next to a window outside where there is very much plenty of LTE coverage from Sprint and I'll reboot and cycle airplane mode two or three freaking times before the stupid thing stops roaming. The most frustrating thing is when it does actually work, it has the best LTE reception I've ever seen. If it would just...freaking connect to the right one...

I have a Pixel XL and my wife has a Pixel, both on Sprint's network. They will refuse to connect to 4G or LTE signal. Will be in the most populated area of Portland Oregon and be stuck on 3G or slower. There are times where we have no network, our Android Auto won't work, our GPS won't work, and our music will stop streaming as we're driving down the major freeways in the Portland metro area.
I have no idea what to do other than just go get a Samsung.

Can't get 4G to stay connected - Very annoying!

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but i wanted to get input from other 4G users who have the EVO.
I just can't seem to keep the 4G network connection to actually stay connected to the network.
I live in the San Jose Area, in my house i get full bar of 4G coverage.
It connects just fine, stays connected for 30sec and then disconnects and entering an endless reconnect loop.
It will only stay connected if i actually open up an application that constantly consumes data (like watching a video or listening to internet radio). As soon as i close this application the reconnect loop returns. needless to say it kills the battery.
Initially i thought it was the tower that i am connecting to, so i drove Palo Alto which also have 4G and the same thing happens there.
Either there is a serious bug in with EVO or the network is kicking my device off.
How is your experience with 4G? will it stay connected with good signal even if you are not going anything on the device?
I hope that doesn't become a common problem like a lot of people's problems with the Nexus One being unable to maintain a 3G signal.
Wish I had 4g in my area to test. Loving the sprint 3g vs t-mobile 3g.
To the OP - the network you are on is labeled as Sprint, but it is in fact Clear's "developer Innovation test network". Read more about it on Clear's site. This is basically a TEST network, with not full deployment - so building penetration will not be as good as it could be. Keep in mind also that 4G has a high spectrum and high spectrums have never been good at building penetration.
So, basically - this is not the full network we'll see at 4G launch in the Bay Area. This is just a test network. Don't think too highly of it. Hope this helps.

This indeed crossed my mind. Even though i do get full bar of 4G at my house.
This is why i wanted to know if EVO owners in other locations (outside the Bay Area) are having the same issue.
This is a two part problem I believe. A) WiMax is a very young technology. As it gets older it will get better. Bank on that. B) I read somewhere that this Google I/O software has a bug in the 4g software that will keep disconnecting when not on a constant downstream of data. It will keep disconnecting and reconnecting. Basically, once this bug is fixed and WiMax gets older we should be fine.
Ghetto idea, turn on the wifi hotspot and see if that hold the connection open.

Tried that. it wil stay connected if the laptop connected to the hotspot is pulling data. otherwise - reconnect loop.

EVO gets stuck roaming

At my work I get 0-1 bars of Sprint service, and my phone often roams onto Verizon (we have dozens of Verizon repeaters in our building). The problem is that quite frequently lately it will get stuck in roaming mode and never switch back to a Sprint tower. I have 6 bars of Sprint service at home, but it will remain in roaming mode. I have the newest PRL (60670), and the old PRI (1.34_003).
Anyone else ever experience this? Any idea what I can do to fix it?
I have had this happen in the past as well. What I did was go into settings and change the roaming option to "Sprint Only" which forces the phone to switch back to the Sprint network. Then you can change the roaming option back to "Automatic".
I get this a lot as well. I've started to make a habit of turning on airplane mode, then turning it back off... when it scans for signal it will go back to Sprint.
Sorry if i'm stealing this thread. Is it pretty bad if my phone has to go in roaming to get signal in most my house? I've seen the threads about people getting a airwave because they get dropped calls, but since i have to roam in more than half my house, does it seem possible i could get one from sprint?
And my house is in the middle of town, if you go outside there's 4g, but not inside.

Same here, I just toggle airplane mode on and off.
Same thing on my EVO. It'll roam when it should but it won't switch back to Sprint when it should.
I chatted with Sprint asking why this happens. They just said I have free roaming. No reason why.
Yep, My Evo has been doing this as well. Been doing the airplane toggle trick. Thought about just leaving it, but was thinking that it may burn my battery faster? Anyone have any thoughts on that..
My PRL is also 60670, but I have the 1.71_003 PRI.
Guys if you have any type of active data connection the phone will not drop the roaming.
I roam at work too and if i turn on Aonline radio, tjen get in my car and drive, so long as the radio streaming is going iy will never drop the roaming.

Messed with the phone again tonight. Got stuck roaming again. I was not transmitting anything, and even ATK'd everything to make sure. Who knows, not really a big deal, unless I am eating more battery.

That makes perfect sense. I sync with my Exchange server at work and the way EAS works is a constant connection between the client and server. One question though. Has your phone switched back to your carrier with no data connection?
Yeah just disable always-on data or cycle airplane mode to make it switch back. As long ad its maintaining a data connection it will wait to switch back from roaming so it doesn't unnecessarily disturb your connection if you're in a poor service area. It shouldn't be using any more battery.
Also, atk is bad.

4G network issue or my Epic?

In a spot where I get very strong signal, today it will connect but won't actually work. Toggling 4G mode and rebooting have no effect. 3G works normally. Anyone else having this issue? Wish I could test it in another 4G area to narrow it down to the local tower.
Happens to me intermittently. I wondered if it was maybe just maintenance on a tower but that would not account for it showing that 4g was connected, plus my buddy was connected on his Evo at the same time, getting pretty good speeds. Its very curious.

Well, at least I know now it wasn't my phone. 4G is back, although weaker than before. 100% uptime doesn't exist in this world, yet.

Galaxy S5 3G to LTE Hand Off Issues

Hello,
I am casting a broad net on the internet here to get a consensus with what is going on with the LTE problem many are having with their S5''s
Does anyone NOT have an issue with their phone going from 3G to LTE then back again. A lot of people (including myself) have to toggle airplane mode on/off just to pick up LTE. It does not automatically connect for some reason.
For added information, I am in a non LTE launched city but have been testing by a known LTE tower. when I drive up to it the S5 will not switch over to LTE. When I toggle airplane mode it works.
I guess long story short. Is there anyone out there that does not have this issue?
Thanks a ton for any information!
I don't have that problem I always have LTE unless I travel far out of the city which is normal with all the LTE phones I have had.

Think it's an issue with your provider, I've tried LTE/3G with four different providers here in Denmark without any problems.
Could be an issue with the SIM.
Also, which version of the S5 do you have? EU, US, Asia, etc? BRanded? Unbranded?

I do not believe it is actively searching for a LTE signal all the time. It takes a min or two for my phone to pick up a LTE signal once I'm in a known coverage area. I've done the airplane mode toggle before as well..... It forces the signal search right away.
I'm sorry I should have mentioned that I am on sprint. I will be going into a launched LTE city here today and will do more testing.

Yeah I'm a Sprint user too. All of my Sprint LTE devices have behaved similarly. It takes a few minutes of being in a known LTE coverage area before my phones (both IOS and Android) would connect. Its because the radio isn't actively searching all the time.... I'm not sure what the actual search interval is, but it's not constant. And again my Iphones behaved just the same as my current S5.
My Evo 4G was constantly searching for a wimax signal when I wasnt in a coverage area.... it really sapped the battery because that radio was always on the hunt for that wimax signal.
Got no issues of this kind
im on tmobile im having the same issue ,never had this problem with my s3lte
I don't have this issue, however on one occasion at work I lost 4g signal which is usually at 2 bars, and it sat there and didnt connect to 4g again until I did airplane mode, then it came back fine. But this is the one and only time I have had the issue.
this is a sprint issue
you need to wait until they finialy decide to update their towers to handle the new triband phones, they claim they will be done with all the updates by the middle of the summer, i got sick out their sub-par coverage and took all my lines over to verizon... no regrets
details about their issues are here, it is a long read but good:

S5 LTE Hand-off Loss of Signal
I'm a Sprint customer on Long Island, New York and I've been having the issues as well. I had to deactivate the S5 because it would lose data and even phone service sporadically without any warning. Sprint's solution is to go into Airplane mode for 5 minutes then back, but that's 5 minutes without service after noticing that the service is gone (and losing how many calls/messages). My girlfriend has one too and probably misses about half her calls (and texts come in late constantly) What happens in an emergency? I recently blogged about this. Isn't Sprint opening themselves up to liability by selling the phones while these issues are known internally?
Im in Denmark too, and i have the problem with Telenor, but did not have the problem with Telia, unfortunately i have to stay with telenor, work phone

You didn't do a forum search or you would already know that it doesn't affect everyone. There are myriad threads about this and the concensus is that it is carrier dependent.
Open a support ticket with your carrier. Also, the 4.4.3 update is said to address this bug, so that is something that you might want to look into.
.
Just a little update, put on download booster, and after that no problems whit disconnect from network, will see later when i leave home to see what happens then.

Usage Verizon 4Glte availability in 3g areas.

I'm not sure so asking for a friend. He has a Verizon Pixel XL, works well, wants a One Plus 6T.
He wants to know what happens when you have a One Plus 6T, on the Verizon network with “CDMA-less device” engaged in his house, when his house only gets a 3g signal?
My response was that his speeds would only transmit at 3g, but would like to hear from real persons using Verizon with 6T.
If he only gets 3G on his other phone, them he will most likely have no service at all with the OnePlus 6T at his house. Try having your friend put his phone in LTE only mode on his other phone to see if he gets a signal at all. By the end of the year Verizon is shutting down their 3G network anyways. I used to put my phone on airplane mode and have the wifi on, so I could use wifi calling in areas I didn't have service but had wifi
If he only gets 3g then tell him not to buy it. There is no wifi-calling on Verizon with the 6t so he will have no signal at all. I bought the phone and loved it, except I never had a signal at home or work so o returned it. With only a 3g signal you cant even get a text.
