Lost root after update - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hello,
My brother has updated his phone and lost his root and TWRP.
what is the possible solution to have them back without losing the data ?

With A/B phones you have to re-flash Magisk and twrp after each update, boot to twrp and flash Magisk-TWRP installer again.

Your bootloader is still unlocked after the update, so you can boot twrp without problems.

Will this work without flashing TWRP? Can I just boot TWRP using fastboot, then flash SuperSU 2.62-3 and reboot? In that way, after reboot it will be system recovery and as SuperSU 2.62-3 is a systemless root, there won't be any modification in /system. Thus, I can receive OTA updates in future directly.
Did anybody try this with XT1550?

You don't have chance anyway after rooting. You have to have Flash the firmware again to receive OTA

Yes, you can do it that way, I've done it several times. Like someone said though, it's simpler to just flash TWRP and be done with it rather than wait for OTA's that you probably can't flash anyway.

In an earlier post you indicated that you can simply do a full unroot with SuperSU and receive OTA updates. Did that only apply to 5.1.1 and not 6.0?
Tel864 said:
I was able to d/l the update, but had to unroot to install the update. If you're using SuperSU to root, it's a simple matter to use the SuperSU app and do a full unroot, then just root again after the update.

Same question. Coming from a Nexus 4 phone, it was necessary to unlock the bootloader first. According to the instructions here, that is unnecessary?
EDIT (01-20-2016): Thanks for adding the missing unlock bootloader step to the instructions. I just ordered a Moto G yesterday.

To root you will need an unlocked bootloader.
Any one?
Rooted xt1550 with supersu 2.62 and then deleted moto bloatware, now phone stuck on black screen after rebooting. Any help abt deleting bloatware?
Seems fine..but
just done this and boot up looks normal but seems forever to boot up. It has not boot up yet, what is the estimated time to wait?
Does it matter if TWRP is configured as "Read Only" or not?

@abhijeetc Excellent instructions. One recommendation is to address the issue with the "read only" TWRP option. I am sometimes presented with this option during TWRP boot (not sure why this option is not presented every time since I never check "don't show again"). I am not sure if "read only" makes a difference or not. But I can confirm I was soft bricked after enabling read only and flashing 2.66. I did not wipe Dalvik/Cache either. I was successful with 2.62-3 but was not presented "read only" option either. Also, you may want to recommend a Nandroid back up prior to any attempt flashing root. Just a recommendation.
I notice under developer settings (tap Build Number a bunch of times in the "About Phone" section to access developer mode) it has the option "OEM unlocking - Allow bootloader to be unlocked" as an option. Does that make this process any easier or is it necessary? I bought my phone straight from motomaker.

Couldn't update Installation problem with august update

So this week i hadn't time enough to install the august update since my phone is rooted so i decided to do it now. What i did before trying to download the update :
1.Deleted all magisk modules that i had then rebooted
2.Unistalled magisk using restore image then rebooted
3.Went to sys update downloaded and it says installation failed
What do to? I'm not rooted now and i don't have twrp installed.
PS. don't want to install it via fastboot/miflash
Follow this guide in future. https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/blob/master/docs/tips.md#ota-installation-tips
To fix your problem now, find a stock boot image for your update version you are currently on and flash it.

If you don't want to use Miflash (Why ?) you can boot temporary TWRP and flash .zip here:

TWRP encryption

I'm unlocked, rooted & encrypted. I'm on 9.0.1. I updated TWRP through TWRP. Now it's not asking for password to decrypt. Seems like I had this problem before, but can't remember how I fixed it. Thanks for any help.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. If I could see my files in TWRP, I would reinstall previous version or a different one to see if that would fix it.
Do I have to use ADB on a computer & lose my data? Or Sideload? Did it before, but can't recall.

You won't loose any data by flashing twrp. Just flash the recommended codeworkx twrp with your current twrp by either fastboot or USB otg(USB Stick).

With this you're going back to stock & relocks your bootloader

In short, you have to have magisk installed with TWRP or this will happen. You can either flash a stock boot image to your boot partition to go back to stock recovery and no magisk installation, or as cult said, MSM tool to just completely wipe your phone if that seems easier to you.
thx

TWRP without ROOT MODE ?

Hello,
I have an S5 (kccat6).
After installing TWRP with ODIN, do I also need to install superSU to fully use TWRP? Or can I do without the root mode without problems?
Thanks for your advice.

No.
TWRP just replaces stock recovery to be used instead.
SU or nowadays Magisk gives root privileges but they need TWRP to flash them.

So I can make a full backup of my unrooted android system with TWRP, and restore it as well without any problem ?
Rooting is not mandatory for that ?

Great, I prefer to keep it unrooted.
Especially since I hardly do anything with it. Just a ghost system for security and that's it.

Thanks, I'll see the next step to install LineageOS maybe.
Have a nice weekend.
