I don't know if these if happening on all our s2's.
basically, I noticed brightness goes down when displaying a lot of whites. e.g. google vs the whites in a page with more darker areas. (i don't think it's my eyes.)
I've never noticed this on my hd2, or any other phones.
when displaying google's in the browser, the white is not impressive at all.
another test i did was with an image I created (attached), half black half white. open in gallery and slide it so more black shows, or more white shows. The whole screen changes brightness!
My friend's S2 does the same.
can anyone confirm?

That's actually a power-saving feature you can turn off.
Go into Settings -> Display -> Scroll down and untick 'Auto adjust screen power'.

Its not.
Its definitely there irrespective of display settings.
Basically even when you are not moving picture, have a look near the border.
There is definite grey banding near the border. It kinda looks like white is bleeding into the black.
And its there on every SGS2, every single one. It can be hardware or software issue.
@OP. you are definitely not alone. I was actually having talk with my friends in UK. 6 of us now have SGS2. 2 are from O2, 3 from P4U and 1 from Handtec and mine is from Clove.
All are experiencing same thing. Its definitely not your eyes.

It's an option in the Display settings - auto adjust screen brightness after analysing image or something similar.
Samsung thing, I think, since my Omnia 7 with Windows Phone did exactly the same thing. It's trying to save you power and completely normal.

Thanks very much guys, I think I can accept it if it's all built like that. With that option off it really helped! (I feel a lil retarded now). But for some reason that test image I made still has that dimming effect (double tap it in the gallery, this instant change makes it obvious), but maybe that's normal, not fussed. (normal web browsing is perfect)
And no I didn't exchange any phones. Mine does have a dead pixel tho. Can anyone check their screens for dead pixels for me? I know someone had blue lines and stuff on their units, that's a bit drastic. I'm just wondering how many actually have say 1 dead pixel, so I have a better picture before I actually exchange mine or something.

Nah, no dead pixels or other screen issues here. If you have dead pixel, i would return it.
Here is the video, its not clear as camera limitations dont really show it properly, but at 720P you can see it for fraction of second, that is not the lens glare but screen turning grey right above the white border.

As mentioned, its a power saving feature as AMOLED screens don't like whites as they drain power, they prefer blacks. So reducing the brightness helps to save battery.

I can see it grey in the video, almost like that gingerbread scroll limit effect. very hard to see in the video though, would have just said it was the camera.
Yea I'm considering returning. In my other post, I mentioned how Handtec got back to me. In short, not fault since only 1 pixel, but told me I can exchange/return within 7 days. But, they said since it's not a fault, I'll have to pay shipping both ways. (£28 per way, ouch)

Just a thought, could not the grey area when moving a black/white border area simply be the screen pixels taking a few milliseconds to go from completely dim, to grey, then to completely white, ie just a response time, albeit a bit slower than what I would have guessed?
On my SGS, going into a completely black app drawer with bright icons and moving around, it also has a very slight dragging effect on some white/black constrasting areas?
Just got my new SGS2 3 days ago, really liking it but stumbled into a screen problem and would like to know if it's just me/it's normal/I need to change a setting to fix the problem.
Just like the title says, the left side (about 1/3) of my screen changes the colour of the image to a more yellowish tint. This seems to happen just when the brightness is quite low, and tends to disappear when close to 100%.
It is rather subtle, but can be seen where there's white text on a darker background (white characters become darker the closer they are to the left border), or when looking at an uniform colour.

When visiting it on the S2 browser and setting browser brightness to around 20%, it becomes quite visible.
Anybody else with the same problem?

If you believe your SGS2 has a perfect screen, please post pics of the notification area taken in the dark at both 0-20% brightness and 100% brightness!

I have just sent an email to GSMarena asking if they could check the unit they reviewed to see if it has the same problem. Of all the phone reviews I have seen, theirs seems to be the most focused on image quality, I'm sure that if their unit doesn't have this problem, they would be able to take clear shots of a flawless screen.

GSMarena took screens of their unit using the above test link, and while so far I believe theirs is the best looking display that we have seen so far, it *STILL* has the problem.
I am going to link this thread to samsung UK next, in the hopes they will give an official answer acknowledging the problem.

latest firmwares seem to fix this problem or at least make it much less noticeable.
Take it straight back and swap it. Seems to be a growing amount of people on here, including myself, with various dodgy screen issues.

The screen doesn't look perfect if you look at a uniform color on the whole screen + low brightness, but... well I don't tend to use it much for that. Could be a limitation in OLED production-technology getting all the pixels to have exactly the same brightness/color etc.

To answer directly to the question here, no I don't have a yellowish left side. It's just not completely uniform across the whole screen.

Your posted image does show it clear.
What to do? Could you others comment whether you've seen this? Go to the OP's posted link and set your brightness down to 0%.

I tried to mess around with settings such as auto adjust screen power etc, but the only thing that seems to fix it is crank up the brightness.
We obviously can't keep it anywhere close to 100% tho, this phone sucks battery down quickly already at 0%!
Another thing you can do to check if you have this screen problem is call *#*#0*#*#*
This will make the phone go in the diagnostic program, and if you try the white diagnostic, you can somewhat see the problem, although not quite as clearly as in the test web page I posted above.
I'm considering to return the phone, as it doesn't seem to be getting better, despite having read that some screen problems might go away after a few days.
Mine is exactly the same. It's noticeable at the lowest brightness setting, however if I increase the brightness even slightly it pretty much disappears for general use. It's still there but not really enough to bother me.
On the OP's link I changed the brightness through several settings and at certain brightness levels the whole screen gets a yellow tint. Not necessarily related to the left side of the screen having a yellow tint, apart from I guess a lack of brightness of the blue subpixels relative to the red and green.
I'm not sure if I'm imagining it but I think it has improved slightly on mine over the past week. However if it gets any worse I think a warranty claim will be in order.
Hhrrmm, I'm in a catch-22 here. There's generally a grace period for any manufacturing errors like this where you can quickly get a replacement just by returning it to the vendor. Problem is, my vendor won't be getting any new units in for another two weeks.

I don't see it clearly on the link he posted.
But i do see it in the notification screen. The grey area is slightly darker/yellow tint on the left site. Even when i put it on maximum brightness you could see it. Especially when you first concentrate your eyes on the right side for 5 seconds and than on the left side.
I do seem to notice it on the notification grey slider where your finger is on when you pull it down, on the left side the grey is a little bit "darker" than on the right side of mt finger.
I tend to think I can also see it on the keyboard, whereas the Q has different grey than P on the opposite of the screen...
Anybody could check this out on their phone??

As time goes by, it feels like my problem is getting worse, although it may only be due to me being aware of it.
Also began noticing it in the pull-down message field. Now I see it against white backgrounds as well, almost like a faint green-grey shadow.
I've contacted my vendor and requested an RMA and replacement. They're sending me a shipping slip to send it to them "for control" then they'll contact me on my options from there. Can only hope they see it as clearly as I do and that they send me a new phone as a replacement rather than repair/refurb crap.
Think this is the last time I buy electronics online. I saved 20% off retail on this one, but having the option to do a walk-in replacement at a brick-n-mortar store would have been worth the higher price. <sigh>

But if the majority does not have it, I would like to have one without it. Do you think Samsung knows abouth it?
When you have a full grey pictuere or just the notification screen and you go into a perfect dark room. Can you also see, some white vertical en horizontal lines? Looks like hardware where the screen is build on?
Here is a photo I took of my screen with a grey background (see below - click on it to enlarge).
For me, its visibility seems to vary depending on the ambient light, but I'm definitely seeing more effects of it now.
Really hope I'm able to get a good replacement. Am reading quite a bit about this, banding, lines and dead/lit pixels.
so do you think it's a hardware issue, or maybe it will be gone??

The lines you mention are present both on my SGS and my SGS2. It seems to be patterns in the actual OLED pixels, and the patterns and lines are static even when you move pictures. Mostly visible on lower display brightness settings. I've gotten used to them and they don't bother me, and since I have the same thing on two SAMOLED-phones I'd chalk that one up to "just the way it is" aswell. Using anything over 50% brightness has them mostly fade into the display light so only really visible on the lowest brightness settings.

This what you mean?
My Samsung focus and Cowon s9 (which I don't even think has a samsung oled screen) have that as well on the lowest brightness, I think its inherent to the tech.

On a grey pick with full birghtness I can see them too.
On the post 2 post above yours(quist his post) you can see the lines, but now they are not white, but darker, can you confirm you see them and this is what you mean?
Do you also have the yellowish tint on the left side?

For both the SGS and SGS2, the dark lines are there for my devices aswell. They can seem a bit "grainy", and don't seem like perfectly defined lines, though they generally are always straight horizontal or vertical lines. I also have the Xperia Arc at hand, and if you look at a grey-ish image on either the SGS/SGS2, or the Xperia Arc (LCD), the Arc generally has a very smooth grey image, while the SGS/SGS2 has almost like a fine overlay of subtle lines or grids, generally darker in color than the image displayed, though not clearly defined and not completely symmetrical across the display.
Doesn't seem symmetrical enough to be a grid fo the digitizer layer or smtn like that, but definitely a pattern in the display itself. I still pick an AMOLED screen anytime of the day, the Arc display, while more uniform and "blemish"-free in this regard, still has that LCD backlight bleed-through which for me makes the display alot more tiring for the eyes.
Also my SGS2 has a very subtle tint towards yellow when viewing some of the grey test-images some people have posted. Never noticed it on my SGS1, so either I didn't look well enough, or it might be either hardware-related (something causing the pixels on the left side to perhaps not get the same amount of control voltage/whatever for the pixels, thus causing less blue/more yellowish color), or software. Either way, it is way too subtle for me to care at all, maybe this is even according to spec for the SAMOLED+ and some use will even the pixels out, not sure if anyone has some inside knowledge about the SAMOLED screens.
I am definitely seeing this problem getting worse, now it is getting rather obvious as long as phone is lit by artificial light or in the dark, while sunlight seems to make it really hard to spot, even if not direct.
I've been given advice from samsung call center to bring to phone to the closest assistance point, which I'm going to do tomorrow - hope to be able to report back that it is a known problem and they will change my unit.
I hate to make an iPhone reference here, since I'm *not* a fanboy, but Engadget reported when the IP4 was released that yellow spots and banding were due to glues that had not completely dissolved/disappeared and were part of the bonding process of the screen:

Now - the picture above showing a completely yellow left-side display - that looks 100% abnormal and I'd RUN back to the store to swap it out. I don't think that's glue related.
Download an app from the Market called "Dead Pixel Test" and run it with the white setting to see what it looks like. Is it still yellow?
Have this same issue. Noticed it right away unfortunately. It will always bother me if I deal with it.

My Z5p suffers from backlight bleed, mostly from the top. It is something I could live with, until I noticed something terrible during its "Optimizing apps" when it was rebooting. I could see a white light coming from under the top bezel. It is only visible from a certain angle and can not be seen when looking at the screen directly. I tested this afterwards on every background and picture I had, still visible. I immediately sent it for service.
The latest report said that they could not replicate the issue, so I sent them a sh*tload of pictures showing the problem. They still have not answered. I will keep updating this thread until this issue has been resolved.

All the phones I still have and had is LCD, not one of them has/had this amount of bleeding like my Z5p, not even my Oneplus One (does not have it at all) with its sh*tty quality control they had when I bought it (August 2014). If you had read more thorough, the first thing I stated before was that I could live with backlight bleed, but not when I noticed the white light coming from beneath the bezel.
I don't think thats particularly bad.... check out my Surface Pro 4 screen bleed.

Your backlight bleed seems to be much worse when looking at the screen head on. Have you tried tilting the device and checked to see if the bleed comes from beneath the bezel deeper inside? It is a white light on full brightness no matter what brightness the phone is on. It reminds me of when the bezel of a phone shatters and light constantly shines through the cracks.
It's nothing new to me, my Xperia S and Z1 have the same issue since day one.

Yes, it's because the backlight doesn't shut off when you get in standby mode.

Hello guys, suddenly I'm having display issues on my k20. I've attached a link to the video, when i pull down the notification bar, look how the blacks are loading a bit late. When i turn off dark mode, i see no issues like this, it's just the beautiful display again. Even i had same issues with my dark wallpaper. Please check, if you've same issues. I'm really concerned about it. Also, this maybe screen flickering but when i increased brightness, the issue didn't disappear, it was still persistent but at lower levels.

That's normal behavior for amoled displays.
1st: If this is the display problem, how can you expect we can see this on a screen capture??
2nd (probably because of the 1st): I can't see anything wrong.

Can't you see that voilet-ish colour instead of black when I'm swiftly moving the notification bar? It's clearly visible in video, you might want to check again.
Nope, watched it at least 5 times, on my PC and my 9T. Can't see anything peculiar.
I can not see anything wrong or violet at all. Am playing this on my computer at 1080 resolution and 0.25 playback speed and there is nothing to see.
If your screen is faulty, we are not able to see it on video you have shared with us of course

It's normal for OLED panels, some are better, some worse. My phone has it too. No need to go to the service center.
I too have it brother. Dark mode has it normal mode doesn't. It can also be noticed if you open youtube and scroll back and forth quickly. The blacks seem to be spilling or streching. I saw that on your video and I don't know if it is normal or not but i too have that and wanted to ask someone about that.

People are claiming this to be normal, but after searching a lot i got to know these kind of issues come after 1-2years, not in a week or month. So I'm trying my best to replace my device or get the screen changed. I don't understand why Xiaomi is keeping the colours to pure blacks when they know their displays are facing smearing issues. I hope someone just changes that pure black colour to very dark grey colour, system widely. Some developer tested(on OP7 pro) the battery consumption difference with pure black and dark grey and it turned out that, dark grey consumes only 0.067% more power than dark inky blacks. I'm humbly requesting developers to change the colour, or at least have an option for the same.

It's normal for Amoled screens (from first day of use). Just search for Amoled black smearing and you'll find a lot of videos and articles. S10 has it, iPhones have it too.

I have faint vertical lines on the right of the display when the brightness is low which is how I normally use it. I also have black smearing on pitch black to dark color transition. I think thats normal, it doesn't really bother me all that much.
The best way to reproduce this issue is turn off brightness to minimum and turn on reading mode to max. Then you'll see delay of displaying some colors (mostly gray)

My k20 has this issue and it's annoying that after paying for a flagship killer, we just got a cheap display which is not just low in quality but has these issue in dark mode which i think most of us use. Interestingly when i record this from screen recorder,it doesn't show up much but the same can be seen visually. So, this is definitely an issue that redmi is trying to let go.

As you "record from screen recorder" you do not record from the screen as you may like to think. You capture the video signal BEFORE it gets to the screen. So any imperfections caused by the amoled screen do not show up on a screen capture.
Anyway, this is a normal weakness with all amoled screens that I have seen.
It is soooo annoying when in dark mode at low brightness, I feel like I couldn't stand it anymore. The worst experience of display usage ever.
Maybe with DC dimming update that might happen someday, the issue won't be as intrusive and pronounce as it is right now. But whenn???
UPDATE:
So I found a workaround for this issue with an app. It's called Screen Balance. Basically it adds a filter overlay on your screen (ineffective on notification panel, because android restriction). Set it to either flourescent or flourescent (warm) at 15% strength minimum, and both brightness and contrast at 100%. You won't see perfect black anymore, but very close to that and no smearing effects visible unless you're really trying to.
I've bought Mi 9T Pro and have the same issue (also see it in your video). Did you fixed that?
I have seen a lot of early-batch OnePlus 8 Pros with screen issues online, and no new-batch owners reporting with their side of the story. Anyone here with a new, freshly built phone, maybe with the manufacturing day at around the beginning of May?
My phone has some very OCD-inducing red and green greys, and I am planning on returning it and buying a phone from the newer batch. I just don't know if thatwill help me at all, since I have not seen anyone with a newer-batch phone post images of their screens.

when i got my april batch in 2023 europe version never had an issue. i really tried looking for it but cant. how do you reproduce your problem.

Now that I think about it... Maybe I'm exaggerating about my issues. My point still stands, though, as I'd love to see if May batches of phones would look better.
The YouTube app on medium to high brightness is fine - different shades of grey in the interface - on 0-15% brightness (mandatory nighttime brightness!) it's almost entirely one shade of green-ish grey, very eye straining and hard to read. For some reason (this is what confuses me the most) the notification shade is lit up in a magenta-pink-ish glow, this happens rarely in the OS but always happens in the YouTube app 100% of the time.
When watching videos on 0-20% brightness, sometimes shadows look like they're more magenta than grey.
Same issues in Chrome on low brightness as in YouTube, minus the magenta notification shade. Grey pages look very greenish.
When loading up a 5% grey fullscreen image on 20-30% brightness, I see slight uniformity issues. I can excuse uniformity on being an imperfection of AMOLED, though, I guess.
Also, I don't know why, but when the YouTube app is loading (the app open animation is playing) the colors look fine and there's no magenta glow. The moment the app is fully loaded, the colors go green and the notification shade starts glowing. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something and this isn't the screen's fault? Either way, very annoying to spot.
Edit: There is also obvious image retention when performing the test with the 5% grey image. Even at low brightness, I can bring up the notification shade, leave it there for maybe 10 seconds, hide it and see the battery and clock icons on the grey 5% image.

It's because Youtube runs at 60hz. The hz running changes the tint.

Wow, you are right. That's.... annoying, still. Good to know, though. Lowering to 60hz doesn't fix the green greys or the magenta glow under the notification shade, though.

I got also a new one from 15.05. But still I got that milky grey shade over the whole screen when watching videos on low brightness.
I return the phone now a 2nd time.
Got my OP8 Pro May 9 from Amazon .. No issues with screen, and I'm getting 5g from T-Mobile
Still has a milky grey at low brightness just like the poster above (8 May production date). Still not as bad as my two early April devices earlier.
I have checked mine now. Seems ok I can still see a bar at the top but not is bad as before and only when I really look for it. Screen seems much better though. Haven't really tested much else.
For the sake of consistency if anyone is interested could you please test with the attached screenshot? I have very bad green tint on the left half of my display (16/4/2020 unit). I think this grey is bright enough to show any flaws but isn't too dark that it shows up as black.

For those that are receiving replacement devices, what are you seeing for current turnaround times? I'm going to be shipping mine in within the next couple of days from the US and I'm curious on how long it will take before a replacement arrives.

As someone that had the opportunity to test some units from different dates, I will leave a video of the latest one here:

It's sad, but all the units I tested had the same behavior. To this day, all the people that said "my unit is perfect" was because they didn't use the dark theme or apps with a grey background. Moving the brightness slider with a grey background is an authentic disaster, even on units from may.
I bought my 8 Pro from Amazon and received it on May 11.
I have no screen issues. I've read the posts here and can't reproduce the issue.

I have used the same 5 percent.PNG file as I used to test my 1st OP8Pro the screen on my new 1 seems fine and the brightness at night goes low enough for me to be happy. And I don't have weird discoloured areas. I have only had it a day so far so will keep my eye out but so far all ok. No mis typing from keyboard trying to keep up either
