A couple questions before root attempt

Hi,
a few weeks ago I bought the SE Xperia Play and so far I love it. But I know there is more going on in the Android world. So I browsed through the Xperia Play sections and read trough a couple of threads to get answers to most of my questions I had.
But there are still a few remaining, which are:
1) Is there a way to backup the WHOLE phone ? By "whole phone" I mean TA/GDFS areas as well. My current phone is still in it's stock form, here are a few infos:
Modelnumber: R800i
Android version: 2.3.2
Baseband version: ....-1290_14-10
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-perf
Build: 3.0.A.2.181
It's SIM Free with bootloader still in it's locked state. Is there anything special about my phone that devs might want? Just ask and I'll try to provide.
Or is there a reason not to unlock / update / root for me because of low versions that might come in handy in the future for me?
2) Is there a recovery image in development which works on the Xperia Play ? I couldn't find one, but afaik "xRecovery" seems to be the recovery image for Sony Ericsson devices. Or am I mistaken here?
3) By unlocking the bootloader, the Xperia Play loses it's DRM certificates, which makes a couple of apps useless, like Track ID. What other apps won't work anymore after unlocking ? And are there ways to reconstruct / recreate these cerificates and carry them over to custom ROMs which may appear in the future ?
4) MoDaCo released a custom kernel which enables su shell and adb remount. But he managed it w/o unlocked bootloader. How's that possible? Does it only take place in RAM ? Or did he managed to install it in flash ?
5) In a today's thread about the rooted 2.3.3 image I saw that the provided image is an UK image. Is it ok to install such image on a german device ? Or shouldn't I care about the region the FW comes from ? Could I install a US image ? Or are UK images for all european devices?
6) In case I brick my device for some reason while updating it to 2.3.3. Could I recover it by using the UK generic .184 FTF image? Or do I always have to use the latest FW I tried to install on the device?
7) Last but not least. I flashed my buddys HTC Legend with CM7 and I love this ROM. I saw that Blagus is working on a CM7 port for the Xperia Arc. The Arc and the Play seem to be identical HW / SW-wise, does it mean that his port (in case the finishes it) will run on the Play as well (given with a few code changes of course) ?.
Sweet lord, turned out to be more questions then I planned But I guess it's good to have a FAQ kinda place where noobs like me can directly go to and get most important questions answered at once rather then spread all over the place
A big thanks to all in advance and keep up the work here !
Regards,
iCEQB
I am noob just like you and I managed to root my play in like 10 minutes after reading some threads here. Try to find some topics like rooting for beginners and another one which says the options that you have after rooting. I used gingerbreak and managed to get root access in about 5 minutes. As for the bootloader unlock I wouldn't recommend on doing that as there are no custom roms to flash our phones yet and personally I am very hapy with the original rom. The key is to root it with gingerbreak and get rid of all the useless apps that Sony has put in your phone and by doing this you get better battery life, better response and more free space. The apps that I use after rooting are busybox, titanium backup pro(to be able to freeze some apps and not delete them as I didn't know what they were doing) , adfree to get rid of the adds and many others. As for the other questions that you have, a more experienced android user should answer you. I didn't update to 2.3.3 as I will lose the rooting option which is necessary for me right now.
My questions are not about "how to root" as you can clearly see. They are rather about making 100% sure, not losing anything that might be valuable I maybe never get back, which could come in handy, like low system versions, a way to relock the bl with a TA backup, or DRM certificates.
I know how to root my phone and I know about the available options, but as I said, these questions are not about how to pull it of
Thanks anyway,
iCEQB
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I would also like to know these things and thats the reason why I used gingerbreak cause you have the option to unroot and you dont touch anything else. I also agree that we need an all-around FAQ topic which will include your questions.
Also n00b but will try... here goes lol
1. I dont think there is anyway to back up the whole phone. Best you can hope for is backing up settings when rooted. No need to hold off updating. But if you go to 2.3.3 rooting is not possible unless the bootloader is unlocked and you flash the rooted img (problem is if you leave the bootloader locked and update with SEUS it will install 2.3.3 so you will be unable to attain root, for now). No custom roms so i wouldnt unlock just yet (can unlock at anytime just will wipe your phone)
2. dont know
3. dont know (since mine is still locked)
4. dont know lol
5. If your xplay is the r800i. Cannot really see any problems . People who have confirmed the rooted img works are from around the world (uk, Hong Kong, Netherlands)
6. Again people who have used the UK generic .184 FTF image are from around the world. If the device is not sim locked (such as yours i dont think it matters )
7. I think it will, the software is basically the same so as you said a few tweaks and it should work. I think he started on the arc since the fourms are alot more active. Will possibly be unlocking the bootloader myself when some roms appear.
My bad if i interpreted your questions wrong as stated im a newb trying to learn fast lol
p.s you could pm the people who made the ftf files and then make a version of your own? if you want the low system version and as far as ive read its not possible to relock the bl once unlocked, yet? If you deffo know youre going to install custom roms wouldn't it be better to unlock the bootloader sooner rather than later since it wipes the phone?
Thanks for your answers so far !
Your answer for the 5th question bothers me though. What different models are there ? I know of R800i and R800a and I thought the letter behind the number is just some carrier marker or something like that or are there any other differences ?
Are there more modelnumbers existing ?
Thanks,
iCEQB
I hope this helps:
1) Is there a way to backup the WHOLE phone ? By "whole phone" I mean TA/GDFS areas as well. My current phone is still in it's stock form, here are a few infos:
Blagus is working on that, to no avail as of today. Maybe you'll want to contact him as he was looking for people with no SIM-lock, but locked bootloaders.
2) Is there a recovery image in development which works on the Xperia Play ? I couldn't find one, but afaik "xRecovery" seems to be the recovery image for Sony Ericsson devices. Or am I mistaken here?
If you mean Recovery such as CWM, no there's not. I'm not aware of xRecovery...
AFAIK, the other big loss is that you can't update through SEUS and you're forced to use Flashtool.
4) MoDaCo released a custom kernel which enables su shell and adb remount. But he managed it w/o unlocked bootloader. How's that possible? Does it only take place in RAM ? Or did he managed to install it in flash ?
He didn't release a kernel, he released an apk. Plus, the Xperia Play forum in MoDaCo has been empty for a whole week. I guess he's dropped it.
5) In a today's thread about the rooted 2.3.3 image I saw that the provided image is an UK image. Is it ok to install such image on a german device ? Or shouldn't I care about the region the FW comes from ? Could I install a US image ? Or are UK images for all european devices?
I bought my phone from Germany as well, and I've flashed the 2.3.3 updates (both the .FTF and the fastboot .img) without any issues.
6) In case I brick my device for some reason while updating it to 2.3.3. Could I recover it by using the UK generic .184 FTF image? Or do I always have to use the latest FW I tried to install on the device?
I guess you can always revert to the .184 one.
I guess only Blagus is fit to answer that, but if they're so similar, it should be an easy fit.

Thank you very much for your answers !
The loss of using SEUS shouldn't be a problem in any way since FlashTool does the same job, if not better
I'll contact Blagus and see if he needs something from me to get his work done.
Thanks again,
iCEQB

Models so far?;
r800i (uk, europe, asia?)
r800a (canada, rogers?)
r800at (usa?, at&t?)
r800x (usa? verizon?)
Z1i (china?)
I think other than r800i, others are mostly locked to phone providers? (unless bought sim free in their native country not sure tbh even the r800i is locked to some carriers i think?) I think r800x & maybe r800a are unable to unlock bootladers dues to restrictions from their carriers? Not sure tbh. I think all people in europe got the r800i? Dont know about differences since i got the r800i only
Thank you for answer and the nice list of modelnumbers. Yeah the problem with the few models which bootloaders can't be unlocked seems to be due to their SIM lock (at least it's the only I can find in the bootloader unlock thread ).

Fantastic thread! As a new Xperia Play owner coming form a Droid 1, I'm very interested in the mod scene as it pertains to this phone. Great questions, OP!
Great thread lets keep it growing!
Sorry to hijack your thread. N00B here, so apologies in advance. I have read many of the threads on here since getting my xperia play and have joined just to ask a few questions if I may.
I want to root my phone to remove bloatware and more importantly remap the circle button for playing emus.
Q1. How do I know if my phone is bootlocked?
Q2. Is it as easy as run gingerbreak, delete bloatware, install apk, remap button?
Q3. Do i need to be running a certain FW, ie: can only be rooted on old FW.
Just so you can all understand, I know a grand total of sweet F-A about phones and rooting etc. Half of the abbreviations used, I've had to google to find out what they mean lol. As a 33 year old man, I'ts a strange feeling to be in my situation, its like being back at school and sitting my 1st algebra lesson!! Its all Greek and Double Dutch to me!
As in the OP, I also have a sim free phone running;
Model: R800i
Vers. 2.3.2
Base: -1290_14-14
Kernal: 2.6.32.9-perf
Build: 3.0.A.2.184
will this be a problem/is this helpful to a Dev?
Basically Im after a bit of reassurance/guidence as I really dont want to make my phone an expensive paper weight lol.
Thankyou all in advance, and agin sorry to OP for the Hi jack, but was going to post a thread with same name
Oh 1 last thing, if anyone lives in the South London area who knows what they are doing and fancies sorting my phone out for me, gets some drink tokens from me and a big thank you

1. If you havent unlocked the bootloader yourself it will be still be locked. No need to unlock the bootloader to root. Unlocking is only needed if you want to install custom roms.
2. Since you are still running 2.3.2 Build 3.0.A.2.184 gingerbreak will still be able to root your phone. If you update though to 2.3.3, gingerbreak will be unable to root your phone since the exploit gingerbreak uses has been patched.
If you stay on 2.3.2 all you have to do is run gingerbreak http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 follow the instruction in the thread then you can uninstall any of the apps (bloat) on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046699 using titainium backup free.
No need to root to remap the O button in emulators. In most the keypad mapping sets O to exit, all you have to do is set exit to another key then O to the key you want.
3. See 2.
May I ask why you want to re-map Circle? I had the hardest time mapping the Cross button because it's like a default Enter button. Finally, I read that if you simply use the touch screen to select the command you want to map, it will let you press the Cross button and map it.
Sorry if I'm off the mark here. That was just a big revelation when I learned that.

Downgrade HDX 7 from 4.5.1 to 3.2... could be possible

Hallo!
Many of you have already received the anoying 4.5.1 upgrade and wait for a miricle so they can root/safestrap/install custom rom etc.
There are many discussions about if this is possible or not.
Many of you contacted Amazon trying to explain they have problems after 4.1.1/4.5.1, assuming at this time, only amazon can "push" such a downgrade for your device.
I want to share here my experience so far.
I got a Kindle HDX 7 last Friday , because it was only 100 EUR at Amazon.
Having no idea what kind of crap regarding its OS it is, I let it update automaticly to 4.5.1.
I saw then, that I can not do any root/custom firmware on it since 4.5.1 is new and not "hacked". There is a thread here in XDA and also a similar ones at other android forums, that someone suggests contacting Amazon and making them "push" a Downgrade from the servers to your device. Many of you already tried it and it did not work.
I have contacted Amazon trought Chat about 5 times. First I was being told that its "techicaly impossible" to do any kind of downgrade or they avoided my conversation and only suggested that I bring my device to service for a replacement. After 4-5 failed attempts I spoke to some random Amazon guy, were I stated that I do not like the new 4.... versions and I insist I get a roll back. I told him also that my device freezes and restarts by itself after the 4.1.1 and persisting trought 4.5.1.
And than the miricle happened. He told me a rollback to 3.2... is possible and he would contact me with more info per E-mail and in 1-2 days their Technical department will "send" the downgrade directly to my Kindle.
I would post here after I have some more news/I have succesfully downgradet.
So, a downgrade via Amazon IS POSSIBLE!
Kind Regards

You read my mind.
Would be nice to be able to flash versions ourselves.
I'll wait under 30 days
I think my kindle already had a 4.something software for the uk as soon as I turned it on it updated once to 4.5.1 and the logs state 4.1 to 4.5.
I'm going to wait under 30 days and then return it as it doesn't connect well with the chromecast or my smart tv, and Amazon simply say wait for another update and it might work but don't count on it but they blamed it all on google (a lie).
One thing with everyone now owning one, I bet the number of calls to "mayday" has gone up and we could all ask regularly about items they have omitted to allow work, see if they can keep to the 15 second target?
It also looks having read all the forums that its been well over a year and few people bought one especially the clever dev's, and the bootloader looks incredibly well locked down compared to versions 1+2, so no-one is working on it.
what does everyone think about the chance of being able to get google play store working on the new 4.5 or should I use it for another week and then return it due to having fantastic hardware but severely software limited and save up for something with a mostly vanilla android.
Temporary solution
hello guys i went to a lot sites looking for a way to root the kindle fire hdx 7 on fire os 4.5.1
its a pain if you got the OTA and you didnt know it was very important to stop that update in order to be able to root.
here a solution to run android apps without crash its very long proccess but if you want it you can have it!
search on youtube : How to install GAPPS (Google Apps) on the Fire HD6, HD7, and HDX
from Imma Wake
no link cuz im new here!
I was also able to get my downgraded from 4.5.1 . After being passed around between departments for 15mins I finally got someone that was able to do what I asked. She said I should be receiving an email within 1-2 business days with further information on the downgrade.

I am waiting for it since last Friday (28.11). I contacted amazon two days ago and they told me they still wait for an answer from the technical department?! Yesterday I made an angry e-mail and I got a fast answer with great apology and a promise they will be ready till 10.12.
I really wish I saw this post before hand I just wasted 3 hours trying two root this bloody thing and two find out fun 7 > 4.5.1 wont root, I feel like a bloody lemon now, I hope someone can help downgrade or update the hack what a bummer.
I'm chatting with Amazon custom service,
They accept my kindle roll back to os 13.3.x.x but they warning my kindle cant not further updates
well well
so confusing
Yep, got the same thing yesterday after going through 6-7 different chats.
well this is what the CS chats:
" 09:14 AM PST Vijayalakshmi(Amazon): We are unable to roll back the software version of your Kindle device as the software version is too high. Only devices running FIRE OS version 4.1.1 can have their software rolled back to the previous version.
I see your Kindle is updated with Fire OS 4.5.1 (451004520).
However, to help you in this case I have forwarded your issue to our technical team with more information.
09:15 AM PST Vijayalakshmi(Amazon): They will get back to you with more information regarding your software roll back."

Thanks alot

Isn't it required that it be a system app in order to function properly?
You have to install some services which requires root. This means playstore isn't compatible with not rootable kindle versions like 4.5.1
Finally! AMZ downgraded my Kindle
Hi!
Amazon rolled back my Kindle yesterday!
It took me one chat and one email to get them downgrade my device.
I switched on my Kindle yesterday and it automatically flashed the 3.2.7 Firmware which we still can root by using the towel root method!
Is there any info I can upload from my Kindle for you? If the files still exists of course...
Cheers
URBANsUNITED
I just managed to get them working on rolling back mine an hour ago, first try to. and she did it while I was on the phone with her. Pretty easy, but I did have a pretty damn good story.
Thread Necro, sorry, meant to post in the other window I have open.
Amazon succesfull Downgrade my Kindle Fire HDX to 3.2.7. Rooting with towelroot works .
Is there a solution to downgrade to 3.1.0 from 3.2.7 ?

Which version had your hdx, 4.5.1 or 4.5.2 ?

Sony Xperia C4 E5303 Root to Marshmallow

Hi XDA community
I am new to the whole android rooting scene, I have the Sony C4 E5303, After almost 6 months of waiting for Marshmallow OTA update in South Africa, it has not come, i would really like to use adoptable storage feature. also i would like to have a rooted device for various other apps and games.
However my phone is still under warranty, i got it in February 2016.
Also google and youtube bring up quite a few sites and videos claiming to root.
But not sure how legit they are.
Maybe someone can help me?
Firstly do i wait till warranty is over?, will it be effected?
A step by step guide from a proper back up of data, and lollipop to revert back to
legit download source of tools and mods to use
and then step by step of how to do it.
I appreciate your patience, as i am a noob in this scenario. and thank you for all your help and suggestions

Root Moto G5 Plus while retaining system update functionality

Hello Everyone! I have recently purchased Moto G5 Plus in India and wanted call recording facility but all softwares (including BoldBeast) that i tried failed to record the sound of the other side properly. There is some distortion. For this, i read in many places that without rooting, this issue will not be fixed. So i want to root the phone but i really want that i should still receive all system/security updates as usual. In this regard, i came across few forum links and videos but i'm not sure whether those apply for my version.
I will really appreciate if you guys can guide me to the relevant link that would work for my version. For reference, i am providing few details that i feel might help you in guiding me. If there's something more that's required from my side, please do let me know.
Android version: 7.0
Android security patch level: November 1, 2017
Kernel version: 3.18.31-perf-g4524a37
Build number: NPN25.137-92
If you root, you can get update notifications when OTA arrives, but the recovery checks whether the system partition has been altered or not before installing the OTA. Hence, update will fail.
Only way out is to be okay with the fact that you need to flash system images from your PC whenever you want to install OTAs. And btw, flashing custom recovery will require you to factory reset your Moto G, as decryption is not supported yet.

If you root, you can get update notifications when OTA arrives, but the recovery checks whether the system partition has been altered or not before installing the OTA. Hence, update will fail.

Thanks for the response. I'm quite new to these jargons but after some Google, i got some idea. So,
1) Do you mean to say that each time i have to install a new update, i will have to do factory reset?
2) If above is true, then it would also mean that i will have to root it again (for call recorder to work properly), correct?

Thanks for the confirmation. So if i have to go for it, can you kindly suggest me a relevant link which i can use for rooting my version of Moto G5 Plus?
Just an FYI... I tried to help a user get call recording to work on his Moto G5+ by rooting and using different apps, failed to record properly no matter what we did. The only solution was hard wired headset with a tap to a recorder.
Just saying... you might want to rethink your plan, you may root but not still achieve your desired goal and the remaining headaches are all for naught.

Hello
I see that you want to record calls on your moto g5+.
I use Automatic Call recorder by Appliqato.
My call recording works perfectly fine with just default settings.I am clearly able to hear remote persons voice.
I have not installed any system update.i feel like since call recording is not allowed in many countries moto through software update disables call recording ability.
I also have moto g4+ which I have updated and no matter what I do on it call recording doesn't works.
Both of my phone's are have locked bootloader.

How to downgrade from 10 to 9? :/

Hi, first I promise I'm not crazy, I just don't like some changes 10 has made regarding the operations of some of my favorite, have-to-have apps as well as how some apps interact with other apps. Second, I do apologize if this is posted elsewhere. I tried searching in several areas for this tab and couldn't find anything about downgrading.
So, here are some specs I think are usually asked for :fingers-crossed::
Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e (2019) - SM-T720NZDLXAR (USA version) (Not rooted because I'm too scared I'll kill the darned thing beyond resurrection.)
Kernel version:
4.9.186-18864194
#2 Fri Jul 17 17:31:12 2020
Build number:
QP1A.190711.020.T720XXU1BTG3
Service provider SW ver.
SAOMC_SM_T720_OXM_XAR_QQ_0001
R52MA18A3SD
XAR/XAR
Please LMK if anything else is needed.
The upgrade was done a few days ago. I searched the net for stock firmware but couldn't identify for sure if any I found would work with my specific model. I readily admit to not having the knowledge to start experimenting first and begging for help after I've blown it up, or bricked it . I'll just skip to the begging. And I'm usually pretty good at following directions when they're in basic layman's terms.
TIA for any assistance and/or guidance offered and please accept my attempts at humor in the nature they're intended. :silly:
Hello, I'm thinking about downgrading my s5e to use Linux on Dex as my tablet came with Android 10 which doesn't work with it.
If you're still in need of these instructions, I can record my steps for you when I attempt the downgrade.

So is this possible? Also, are you saying tablets that originally shipped with Android 9 are now shipping with android 10 instead??? Wtf I don't want android 10!
I don't mind unlocking my bootloader as soon as I get my tablet, but I really need android 9 and not 10. Would you mind telling me how to downgrade?
