Why AT&T makes it so hard to update S8 Active G892A phones? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi,
I really love my G892A S8 Active that I've purchased used in Canada.
But for some reason AT&T don't want their phone to be updated while on another network. This is the first carrier I've seen that does that (blocking OTA updates). Any real reason for this?
I've even tried with a prepaid SIM card from AT&T and paid the 35$ plan to later found out that you really need to be on the AT&T network (US) instead of a roaming network with a working ATT plan.
Even the attcompute.com site where I used to get OTA updates looks it is now blocked from any Canadian ISP.
xdmd.sl.attcompute.com/agents/48974/1488/SS-G892AUCS2ARA1-to-U2BRA3-UP
This used to work 3 weeks ago with the phone user agent. Now, all attempts return DNS look-up failed..
I had other carriers unlocked phone OTA successfully on another carrier network.
This is crazy... why block people from updating their AT&T unlocked phones????
And yes I know about XDA OTA source but it is not always up to date and depends on user base to upload OTA and make it available to general public.
Last security update is G892AUCS5CSH1 but I cannot find it anywhere... not even on xda.
Thanks!
Laurent

I downloaded the newest version of the baseband zip from that site. I am so terribly new to this. What are the programs that I will need to get the unpacked files (.md5) to my phone? there are 5 files: an AP, BL, CP, CSC, and a userdata. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Joel

Certainly. Odin and just the drivers that should install automagically when you connect the device.
in the attached image, youll see an arrow and a circle. The circle is where Odin will show "COM: #" but the number symbol will be an actual number. Doesnt matter what the number is as long as it shows a number. The arrow is pointing at the area where youll put 4 of the 5 files. 3 of the files should be obvious as to where they go, but there are 2 CSC files. One of them does a factory fresh clean wipe of the phone, the other leaves all previous user data intact. CSC wipes it HOME_CSC leaves user data alone.
Hope this helps! Cheers!

So I loaded the BL, AP, CP, and one called "USERDATA" I did not load the "CSC" one because you said it would wipe the phone. I want to keep my user data. So does that mean that I need to have the CSC there as well, but by having the USERDATA one as well (the 5th file) that it will keep it? Also, I unpacked the ODIN file, and simply ran it. Finally, the window that you circled in the image you attached was not populated. What DID populate was the window BELOW the one you circled. It showed: 0:[COM3] But again, that was in the block below the one that you circled and NOT the one that you circled.
When I did just the 4 (BL, AP, CP, USERDATA) and NOT the CSC and ran ODIN, I got the following in the LOG window:

You need to power it off then hold bixby volume down and power til a blue green screen comes up. You need the device in download mode which is from a power off
If it fails again I need the error displayed on the screen.
If you Google download mode and samsung s8 you can get an idea of the screen and how to better

[ROM][Odin] Sprint Galaxy Note 8 SM-N950U Stock ROM Initial Release QH7

This ROM is already available on SamMobile, but for those of you who prefer to avoid that hassle, here you go.
First, disclaimer: I'm not responsible for any problems anyone has flashing or for anyone's device. I'm hoping that this will get devs a starting point, and for anyone who's bricked their device.
This is the initial release ROM for the Sprint Note 8, SM-N950U. I already receive my pre-ordered device, and pulled the ROM from Samsung Smart Switch. This ROM requires Odin version 3.11 or newer.
This is a five segment ROM, BL + AP + CP + CSC. It also has a "USER_DATA" partition, not sure how that comes into play, but I'm guessing it's the Sprint "crapware." The "CSC" partion will delete all user data, whereas the "CSC_HOME" file maintains user data, or so I've been told.
Here's the direct link.

Hey is there a possible way onto rooting the note 8 on 7.1.1?
I'm sure there will be. Only a few people have it right now since its only preorder. I would just have some patience with the devs, they'll get that taken care of pretty quickly I'm sure. I would imagine it would just be some tweeking to the S8 root method, but I don't know.
Quick question...Since the QI5 full ROM has not come out to download for Sprint, if I wanted to attempt to wipe and reinstall via Odin to a phone that already has QI5 on it, can I odin QH7 on it or did the bootloader change and thus Odin will fail? I seem to remember that Odin fails now if you try to restore to an earlier version if the bootloader changes?
I'm trying to troubleshoot my wife's Note 8 with touchscreen issues by completely wiping and reinstalling. I think it is a quality control issue, but I want to be sure before I send it back to Samsung.

You can still flash AQH7..
Yes, just flash back, and after you get it back up, it'll update on its own. The ROM actually contains the BL.
Im just downgrading the firmware, so I assume just use all 4 files yes?

:-\
It is a model N950U using the sprint firmware.
I am very unsure what I am doing, I have trying to reflash the firmware on this now for a while.
Even tried different carrier, but I am unsure if I am doing it correctly.
I have used the PrinceCosmy odin, the patched 3.12 odin, 3.11, and 3.13
Very confused with what I am doing wrong.
I see, my problem was I kept using BLV 2 Firmware, not the BLV3 firmware. I wanted to use BLV2, but I could not get it to work.
Which is weird since in the Reocvery section the FW said I was using BLV2...which was the BQL3 (I think I typed this right).
So no matter what I can not use a BL2 firmware file it seems.
I want to use the N950U1 FW which the only one we have for this is N950U1UEU3BRA5
So I assume, being that I have to use V3 BL, this is the only file I can use on my N950U?
And if I want to use this FW, I must use Regular Odin? Sorry for the newbness. Still newb haha.

Samsung Tab A SM-T585 stuck in emergency recovery mode

A friend forgot the pattern of his tab A sm-t585 and I tried to flash the 7.0 firmware through odin but odin stopped responding and closed before the flash could complete and now the tab is stuck in emergency recovery (a blue screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle with the message "An error has occurred while updating device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software).
1. I've tried using smart switch software but the tab doesn't show in the list.
2. I tried Kies, and it was the same.
3. I tried older version of Smart Switch and use firmware upgrade and initialization, download was stuck at 69% and the after a period of time changed to 85% and the to 0%, left it overnight and it remained unchanged.
4. I tried odin again, it gave an error (couldn't establish connection)
UPDATE: I just tried odin again and this is the log.

Hi. Check your installed drivers on Windows. Maybe reinstall. Check usb-cable and connection . Maybe need to change. And try Odin again.

Are you certain you are in download mode? What do you see on the screen?
If you are then the first thing to try is swapping the USB cable, preferably for the stock Samsung cable.
Being stuck at initialization is a communication error between device and PC. This is either the device is not in Download mode, bad USB cable or problem with the USB port on either device or PC.
Also make sure the PC and ODIN is in Admin mode.

Try removing the md5 extension.
Apart from trying another PC there's is not much else to suggest except download the files again or try a different odin version.
If the device is actually stuck in emergency recovery mode and not just download mode, then Samsung Smart Switch PC App is specificially designed to fix the emergency firmware restore.
We have ODIN. Samsung has Smart Switch. It's like ODIN 7.0. Smart Switch even uses the same ODIN Firmware. ODIN is just their base communications protocol.
Hi Guys, i have the same problem. Update went wrong and now stuck at blue screen. Smart Switch says the tablet is not supported. In odin, same problem as above. Is there any recent solution to this problem?

ATT customer service swears Oreo is coming...

Just had an extended chat with ATT customer service today. After about 10 minutes on hold, I was told that the OTA on Oreo would be coming to the Galaxy S8/+ "In the next week or two" and that they were "in the final stages of testing" the update.
I always take these claims with a grain of salt (they told me similar stories when I asked about the Android N upgrade for my Note 5 a year ago), but perhaps there really is light at the end of the tunnel, everyone!
I don't know how customer service would have any idea of when oreo is going to release?
They don't. Only info they get is release dates as soon as the makers set there release date to public. No info is given for updates either til it is released. The reps don't have a number to the makers to pry info from and not are they gonna waste the call time to get that info cause it benefits nothing. Ur still gonna have to wait lol. A lot of times they give out guess based on when they see updates or releases compared to other carriers. Att isn't known for being first to release. They put more time into tests.
In my experience, AT&T has been traditionally the LAST to release updates, never the first. Their goal, it seems, is to get you to dump your phone within a year, so you have the "latest & greatest", when all they really want is more new phone sales.
Sent from my SM-G955U using XDA Premium HD app
Download the oreo update from here on xda main page and flash through Odin and boot recovery and flash update from ad

Can you please post the link? I looked but came up empty.
Also would like to confirm this works for s8+ unlocked running AQL1
Thanks
Use the xda app on your phone. On the main page there are headlines of things going on for new phones and such...look for the one that talks about the oreo update for the s8 and s8+ ...click on it ....there you will find the download links and instructions

Finally got it today!
I assume most of you know (or got the update yourself) that Oreo has been rolling out in waves to the S8/S8+ ATT variation.
I don't see much difference on the surface, but I assume most changes are going on under the hood. In either case, I guess I was just surprised it came this soon. I was expecting at LEAST another week if not more since ATT likes to drag their feet.
Downloading now.
And, as if by magic, the Android fairies sprinkled "brains" dust on AT&T, and we have a rollout. My Oreo just installed earlier today. As Jeremiah said, I don't see too much of a cosmetic difference (a few things so far), but I'm just hoping Oreo gives better battery life (HA!)...

The only thing holding me back is potentially not being able to flash an unlocked version of the firmware when ever it comes out.

I just flashed Canada XAC unlocked/unbranded oreo (downloaded via samfirm) over December att nougat without issues. Wanted US XAA but it seems it is not available yet.
And I still don't have Oreo on my ATT S8+. WTF ATT?

I would like some help with my s7 edge international version

My phone is stuck on a screen that says downloading do not turn off target, this has persisted after several hardware button combos and attempts to boot into recovery mode. From Samsung perspective it likely has a firmware issue, however since it's an international version device they won't service it. My local cell phone shop wouldn't service it when I told them it was an Exynos version. So I am left to fix this myself. I am pretty good with phones and computers but my knowledge about flashing firmware is limited. I do know I need to be correct about which version of firmware I download. Currently I am downloading G935FXXS2ERG7 - GALAXY S7 EDGE SM-G935F XEO POLAND because there was a sticker on the phone about how to change the language from Polish to English when I received it, on the back of the phone is says "Samsung s7 edge yateley gu46 6gg uk" Part of me thought I should download the UK version of firmware, but my carrier is US-based (cricket), so when looking at firmware carrier options none apply to my situation. I just want to make sure I am downloading the right version of software. If you have any ideas or suggestions on what to use, please advise.

You can change languages during setup of Android, since it's an F model it can flash any csc or bootloader or modem of the 935f variety when flashing with odin use version 3.13b for oreo.
It doesn't really have to be polish or UK you can choose other country as long as it's 935f.
BTU version has the least bloatware though.
Note: you may not have wifi calling or volte as these are carrier specific features. But calling data and texting should work. PS you can't flash American network firmware on exynos.
Flash the boxes ap bl and cp individually to avoid bootloop.

Unable to flash G950U to G950U1. Odin errors out. Please help!

Well, I feel like im banging my head against a wall at this point and am asking this great community for some help.
I have an S8 (SM-G950U) that I am trying to flash with SM-G950U1 firmware to get rid of all of the bloatware and branding. I keep getting this error in Odin when flashing:

Xfinity Mobile branded Galaxy S8
Model: SM-G950U
Sim Unlocked
Baseband Version: G950USQS6DSH2

My current CSC is CCT, trying to go to XAA. From Updato this is the firmware I am attempting to flash (I cant post a direct link because I am new):
Country / Region USA
PDA G950U1UES6DSH1
Product Code XAA
CS CG950U1OYM6DSH1
Phone G950U1UES6DSH1
I have used three different versions of the Samsung USB Driver. I have used three different USB-C cables. Three different USB ports on my motherboard. I have tried three different versions of Odin (Stock 3.13.1, PrinceComsy and 3B. All with the same result. The only thing I dont have is another PC to try on. I have tried the Start, reboot device, Start again trick that was suggested. I don't feel very savvy with this so I'm not comfortable messing with the PIT file. Odin seems to see the device with no problems everytime I plug it in, I get the blue box everytime.
Is the firmware I'm trying to use compatible with Odin?
Any help is much appreciated.

You have to flash the combination file before going to u1. I ised to be xfinity cct as well 3.13b is the Odin. But yea. You cant just cross model flash directly. Combination bit 6 file is needed. So flash the combo file. Then the u1 unlocked firmware after and it should pass just fine

Can you recommend a safe place to get the Bit 6 file from? I can't find a post for it in these forums and a google search came up with some sketchy site.

I found a copy of the Binary 6 Firmware. Do you know if I will have to go through the carrier change steps in the "[Snap.] Guide for Flashing Standard FW, Carrier Switching, and Flashing Unlocked FW". I'm too new to post a link to the guide. That guide says to change the CSC value I need to flash the factory binary, then the Canadian HOME_CSC file but the only file linked is the bootloader v2 HOME_CSC file. Can I still use this file or do I need to find a v6 HOME_CSC file? Or can I just flash directly from Binary 6 to the U1 XAA firmware?

I just flash the combination file. Then the corresponding firmware needed. Use the u1 in this case. If your rev 6 u1 firmware has 2 csc files. Flash the csc. Not home csc. It may install xfinitys cheap. You dont have to do all the canadian csc stuff. This things pretty much autodetect carrier and install needed csc files automatically. So I would just flash the combo the refresh u1 and a good factory reset
