Cellular strength and throughput - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Real Life Review

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the 's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.

Band 20 missing
4G is ok in the UK with Band 3 and 7. It may have been better if Xiaomi had implemented the Band 20 (800MHz) which is used by most of the antennas.

How'd u get the K20 pro in the UK? I'd like to purchase one, but just the non-pro variant is being advertised.

Got it from wondamobile.com, 1 week delivery from Hong Kong.

The Xiaomi Mi 9T is way cheaper ($295), same specs (as the K20), and supports band 20

The Mi 9T pro (basically the global version of the K20 pro) is coming in the next two weeks, should support band 20 as well.

Where? Afaik it's coming to India after a month and it's the k20 pro.
After that the global version.

No information yet on where they are released I'm sorry, but as a general rule if the country has a xaiomi outlet and it relys on a certain band, the phone variant for that band will be the one sold in it if xaiomi has that variation. That is true for the mi 9t pro.

The latest rumours are that it could be released in Russia sometime next month and in the EU 'after summer'. Not come across rumours for the Pro release in other regions.

I would wait and see, 4G coverage is more than an option for me. I do not need the extra bands here in Thailand but would prefer to have that version over the current mainstream one. I will have to check the support on the XDA community as well first.
The K20 pro is going to be a more popular one for sure if it was released in India

I'm now in Thailand. I've just ordered the K20 Pro. When I'm back in the UK it will be OK to live without band 20. The only difference between the 2, apart from the bands, will be the logo on the back. ROMs will be interchangeable. Xiaomi.eu will be my preferred ROM option until true custom ROMs start emerging, so as I see it, there is no reason to wait for the Mi 9T Pro, especially as it will probably be more expensive.

Agree with you, but might not be as expensive as you think depending on the market, the 9T is a lot cheaper than k20 currently

In my area I've been surprised how much LTE I'm getting on AT&T. I was expecting to run it almost entirely on 3G but it's actually picking up really strong LTE on band 5.

facing an issue with youtube and mobile data.
mobile data speed is about 2MB/s(20mbps), when trying to download an app from play store was downloading only at about 200kb/s, now went to the downloads app and put the limitation to 100m, than go back to play store and let it download on mobile data , now the speed is OK, but youtube app is still facing same issue, limited to 200kb/s use of mobile data.
any solution to this software issue ? cannot stream 1080p videos on mobile data and i am getting very dissapointed with this.

Using in UK , no issues (1 month+)

Which state do you live? I live in Virginia but not sure band 5 is strong here

Compared to the pocophone F1, signal strength of Redmi K20 pro is way wore.

I am not getting 4g+ on my k20 pro indian variant on both jio and vodafone. Asus 5z, galaxy s10 and one plus 7 at the same spot at my home catching 4g+.

Just got the phone and inserted my Google Fi sim. The data speeds are horrendous. I live in Orlando, so I'm not in a rural area by any means. The phone is nearly unusable on cellular data, and some apps just time out while attempting to connect to the internet. I ran a speed test and got 0.1 megabit speeds

You must be new to international cell phones. You choose a phone with almost 0 compatibility with your current provider.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 North America Users Experience Discussion

I am opening this thread with the intention of enabling a discussion among the North American users (current/prospective).
It appears that Note 3 Pro (Snapdragon variant) is the logical choice for north american user, as it includes few of the 4G bands.
So, how is the network experience with the major cell phone carriers? Which firmware/rom includes those bands? AOSP/Global/China? Does VOLTE work?
I have been using the RN3P for the last couple weeks. I am in the Florida area in T-Mobile network, and really happy to see that I get 4G LTE most of the time. It's the band 4 according to the LTE Discovery app.
I have tried a bunch of different roms, including global stable, aosp and developer beta. I have observed that the network is much better with the developer MM roms. I am currently using the Epic ROM based on the developer rom, and I think I shall use it as my daily driver.

Connected to LTE with Rogers and Koodo (Telus Band 4 AWS). I ordered the china model which shouldn't have included Band 4 (if you believe the information on all the china sellers sites), and confirmed it's not Kate model as it is only 150mm tall.

That's good to know. There are so many variants of this device, it's really confusing. I ordered mine from Gearbest last week, who knows when it will show up. The problem with these Chinese retailers is that sometime they themselves don't know what they have. I guess I have to see what I get. I just hope that mine also supports band 4, which T-mobile in USA also uses.
Are you still using China firmware? Does the china model come with Google Playstore?
http://willmyphonework.net/
most networks will work on the note 3 Snapdragon version (kenzo).
the Kate or aka Note 3 Special Edition model supports a additional 'band 20' which afaik is not used in the USA (someone confirm?)
the Mediatek note 3 Hennessy most likely doesn't have good usa network support
so make sure you get the kenzo or kate model, though I would stick with kenzo since the kate doesn't have as good of support or accessories

Mine came with Global 8.0.1.0 installed, prerooted, and unofficial bootloader unlock. I flashed official 8.0.1.0 global from tgz file, which then relocked the bootloader. I have done the official unlock with the same 8.0.1.0 official stable with no problems.
It came with Google Playstore, and some gapps (not all).
Anyone tried AOSP roms in north america? Does it also get the lte coverage?
I have heard privacy concerns from many people MIUI roms. May be rumors, may be not. But I don't wanna take the risk.
Can anyone compare the performance between MIUI and AOSP roms?

I have on hand experience with Umi Super. Which carrier you are on? With T-mobile Umi Super had really poor data connection. Barely got 3g, I couldn't even stream a YouTube video. I don't think it has any north american band. It's a decent phone for the price, but do your research first.
In Florida with T-Mobile network, using band 4.
I recommend changing the default apn settings to fast.t-mobile.com one, which better result for me.

Xiaomi don't have all US bands why?

I'm interested to trying out Xiaomi , but seem like they don't have T-Mobile band 12 why? Huawei, ZTE, even the new company LeEco have band 12 and Xiaomi doesn't?
The Mi Note 2 Global Edition does have Band 12.
There are a total of three variants: 4GB RAM, 6GB RAM and another 6GB RAM variant which is specifically labelled as the Global 4G+ variant. This particular variant has the following bands:

mi mix is available for pre order 637 usd @ geekbuying and 625usd @ibuygou. however they are not global edition not sure if xiaomi has any plan to release global edition of mi mix. current phone edition will not work properly on US LTE network it will only work on slower data network (2g/3g)
XIAOMI Mix would be quite a experimental phone, IMO, better sit and watch how it works first.
Only Mi Note 2 have bands that might work in the US...Mi Mix don't have it....luckily i not from/living in US and i can use the MI Mix without having to worries about bands
Does anybody know what bands supports usual version (not global)? Does it support LTE band 3 for example?)

According to IBuyGou:
Frequency:
FDD-LTE:B1/B3/B5/B7/B8
TDD-LTE:B38/B39/B40/B41
WCDMA:B1/B2/B5/B8
TD-SCDMA:B34/B39
GSM:B2/B3/B5/B8
Also a small note on the Global edition of the Mi Note 2: While it does support Band 12 for T-Mobile, you might not get VoLTE support on that network. Possibly something that one brave buyer may have to experiment and find out.

Hoping this is the first step in the direction of releasing US based devices. I like the price point and specs.
Both the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and the MIX use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip though, no? Unless I'm mistaken, the frequencies are locked out only on a software level, not a hardware level - I'm sure I've seen a few threads where people have manually added additional frequency bands to their devices to work in different regions of the world (at the risk of bricking their phone, but that's standard disclaimer stuff).
Wouldn't it be possible to purchase a Xiaomi Note 2 or MIX, and then just 'unlock' the bands that they say are not supported?
I'm in for one as soon as available, not happy after giving up Note 7...that was most awesome device. This looks a lot like Note 7...so I'll bite for 600ish

For those who are wondering about this phone in the US. I have this phone (Global Edition) and have had it for about three months now. I used it on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon it worked no problem! I had AT&T originally, and it worked fine and even got band 30 in some areas. In my area AT&T speeds were horrible, so I switched to T-Mobile very briefly they had terrible coverage in my area. So I switched to Verizon. I use this phone all the time and get excellent speeds with it. I hope that helps.

Poco F2 Pro only support N77 and N78 5G

For Europe in future you need N1 and N28, without that you only get 5G in hotspots. So if you from Europe and care about 5G it is a bad idea to get a Poco F2 Pro.
Source: https://www.poco.net/de/poco-f2-pro/specs_m/
Depend on the EU country, Spain only will use n78 and Germany I think will use N78 and N1. K30 Pro chinese supports more 5G bands but no the N77. Here you have the bands supported by both phone models:

reading this wikipedia article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_5G_NR_networks#cite_note-SM_Frequencies_ITU_1-12
looks like n78 will be the standard and base 5g band, and enough for use 5g. Anyways if you are worried by 5g, K30 Pro Chinese have n1 also but I just think n78 will be enough for next 2-3 years, enough time to buy another phone with more bands and 5g will be more standard.
Why you talk about 5G when you don't know nothing about that? N78 can go up to 1000 Mbit/s but cover 1km², N28 can cover over +10km² and is 5 times better inside buildings than N78. With N1 they can transform 3G to 4G+5G, so it will be B1/N1. In Asia you can't do this but in Europe it's possible, just not good for hotspots, like the center of a big city.
2-3 years if they need to build from nothing.

Why do you assume i dont know nothing about 5g?? I know everything about tech and if not, I just google it and read... and I talk whatever I want, you dont need say me about what I can talk or just dont ask this dumb question about a tech in early stages in Europe. Anyways if you are interested only in n28 band just buy another phone, you have many choices like Mi 10, Oneplus 8, Huawei P40, Realme X50, Oppo Find x2 or even cheaper and good phones like Mi 10 lite 5g, but I doubt you are going to use 5g too much at full capacity in next years or at least until you buy another phone.
And Germany is not the only country in EU, so you dont talk about "Europe" if you dont know nothing.

Ok then buy whatever phone you want with n28, I have the Chinese K30 Pro Zoom edition and it also have n1 with n78, anyways n78 will be enough to use 5G in early stages and mostly of people dont care about 5g when buying a phone rn if in 2-3 years they will buy a new phone with 5g being more standard tech.
Please have in account that some operators can and will share the dynamically bands between 4G and 5G in the near future and the Snapdragon X55 Modem does support DSS:
Dynamic spectrum sharing - In order to make better use of existing assets, carriers may opt to dynamically share it between 4G LTE and 5G NR. The spectrum is multiplexed over time between both generations of mobile networks, while still using the 4G LTE network for control functions, depending on user demand. Dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) may be deployed on existing 4G LTE equipment as long as it is compatible with 5G NR. Only the 5G NR terminal needs to be compatible with DSS

In theory this modem can "read" i.e. n1 and n28 bands - see 3GPP TS 38.101 - still not sure if it works at all but is it possible to view/edit via QXDM? (not experienced in this tool)
For portuguese people personally I think it's good smartphone in terms of support of 5G since n78 is the primary band for the first rollout in big cities, n28 for countryside in a second stage.

Band 78 will be used by everyone in Europe. So if they also use 1 and 28 then great but will already have full coverage with 78.
In the Netherlands, as wel as in many other EU countries, the N77 and N78 band will come available first in approximately 2 years because the frequencies used are or not free yet or the frequenties are subject of auctioning off to the mobile operators and that has not been finished yet.
In 2 years this phone is already replaced by 2 successors so the 5G issue is not a real one.
Who then lives who will then care.

N77 (3700 MHz) and N78 (3500 MHz) won't ever have full coverage. These frequencies are relatively high and therefore don't reach that far.
What I'm waiting for is 700 MHz 5G (or other low frequencies). These will cover wide areas.
5G in the Poco F2 Pro is not really useful for me as it will provide a faster connection when I'm already having a very fast connection via LTE (>100 MBit/s) in the middle of the city.
I will go with a Realme 6 Pro or other cheaper options and wait another 2 years...
It is compatible with any sub 6 band that are all, both SA and NSA and also with mmWAVE. You can travel wherever you want and you will have 5G. This is allowed by the modem. Not being so with the previous modem (Mix3). So calm down

Do you know what modem model is? Snapdragon X55?
Do you think that poco will add support for more freq later on ? or is it not possible ?
No, they won't, because if they start to talk about that, a lot will not buy a F2 Pro.
I still don't understand how this works. Providing the hardware for Poco F2 pro and the Chinese version are the same hardware wise is that "only" a firmware issue? And if that's so then why did Xiaomi decided to limit the bands on the global version so that 5G will be hardly ever usable at all then? And finally, if it is only about firmware would it be possible to apply the same firmware from the Chinese version on the global one?

Why would people not buy it if Xiaomi announced they will add another frequencies with an update? I think it would be quite the opposite.

Oneplus 8 Pro (5G) Issue!

Greetings everyone,
I am proud to be a member of this amazing community. I am a big fan of OnePlus and started using it since OnePlus 2. Till this date, every mobile phone I owned was from OnePlus. Just fee days ago, I decided to buy OnePlus 8 Pro as an upgrade from my OnePlus 7 Pro.I was searching and reading about to see what is the best choice for me regarding the version and support for my country (Saudi Arabia). Then I read that the Chinese version is the most suitable one since it supports our 5G network n41 and n78. I ordered the phone and received it almost a week ago and transfered all my data through OnePlus switch which is an amazing app that makes it easy to do so. I was excited to try the new speed of 5G provided by my carrier Zain 5G (n41). When I started using my new OnePlus 8 Pro, I got the option of preferred network from 2g till 5g (see the attached picture). Yet, I got no 5G signal. Bare in mind I am one 100% sure that my sim is 5G. I searched the web hoping to find a solution, but no luck. I thought it might be something that OnePlus team would add to their next update. I wonder if anyone have an idea on how to fix this to make my phone work with 5G or modify it accordingly?. Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, I've also got the Chinese version and based in the UK and managed to pick up 5g automatically via Three network. It was not expected as 5g isn't particularly advanced except maybe in the big cities. Possibly not full 5g but still pretty fast where I am.
If you see your picture again, you're connected to a WiFi. As you said, I should automatically connect to the 5G since I am living in the capital of Saudi Arabia (Riyadh). And I checked the coverage in my area through the provider Zain SA, it is really good in my house according to their website, but I do not know what should I do or change to make it work. Hopefully someone have a solution. Thank you.

The picture is a screenshot from Speedtest history and my WiFi is no way near that speed ?
I've got 5G with three and I live in central London and it's awful.
Phone is unlocked dual SIM, nowhere I've been has shown better results than 4G.
I could get 275Mb on 4G with EE.
Best I've had with 5G is probably about 50Mb.
Personally I don't use it, nor do I need it
You have a point my friend. It might be right, but my brother has Huawei P40 Pro 5G and it works like a charm with 5G network. We use the same service provider sim cards. One day he showed me the speed which has reached around 280MB in the same location we live in. And yet I got this OnePlus 8 Pro with no 5G signal. Waiting for a solution from the expert in this lovely and helpful members of this forum. Thank you for your info my friend.

Thank you.

Thank you so much. I will watch the video and give you the feedback. Appreciate your effort my friend.
I never noticed this. I just ran a speed test in the US and my OnePlus 8 pro was 3 times faster on 4G than on 5G

Brilliant, wtf is he saying????? This is an English only forum lol.
He is speaking Arabic. Still there is an issue with me regarding Qualcomm HS-USB Do over to be installed and known in my device manager of the PC. Couldn't find any good solution on the internet yet.
Greetings Agree I have recently purchase My OnePlus 8 Pro an the test speeds are at Download 0.86 Mbps and Upload even worst. We need a solution or something to fix this issue for the phone.
I always like to wait for an official solution. Hopefully, OnePlus would include fixations for this 5G network.
Hi!

5G not an option now, lost access to LTE
This is bs, but it also means they completely pulled even LTE access...

Might want to remove that language
Seems Verizon is trying to monopolize where you buy phones, chances are most people don't know about this limitation before they buy it.
Where did you buy your phone from?

Amazon a couple months ago. Worked just until 11/13. Easy few months of service with minimal issues
so i was researching if i want to get this phone and i found something that might help you. take a look at this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/verizon/comments/je9hai/nationwide_5g_on_oneplus_8_pro/ and the instructions here: https://mt-tech.fi/en/modify-oneplus-7-pro-5g-8-and-8-pro-nr-lte-a-band-combos/
I just got a 8 Pro and last night got a system update that seems to have enabled 5g. under connections my automatic network selector now shows an option with 5G added and im getting LTE+ that shows when I'm using data. now my speed test shows I'm getting almost triple my download speeds now at 148Mbs or so down . I honestly wasn't expecting any type of 5g access with how Verizon can be with non-branded devices.
Maybe you need to get the update to have it work like i did but just thought i would share since it just happened
This likely won't help you if you bought Verizon's 8 pro (rather than from OP or Amazon, unlocked). Sorry, but I'll just include the following:
I had been with Verizon for years, and then switched from Samsung to OP 8P. Love the OP. But Verizon poorly supports this device if it's BYOD. I couldn't get VOWifi or VOLTE, among other things.
After searching on XDA, I found the OP 7 Pro logkit.apk and used that for a bit, and it *did* give me VOLTE and VOWifi (you have to use some USSD codes to get to some behind-the-scenes settings, if I recall one code was *#*#INFO#*#* (crap, it may have been #*#*INFO*#*#), that opens up a really cool set of setting windows related to your cell signal, wifi settings, etc.
Ultimate super-awesome fix? I ditched Verizon and wen't with T-Mobile. (after 20 years with ATT or VZW).
Wow!! Instant wide-coverage 5G that actually works, instant support for VOWifi and VOLTE, and visual voicemail that works too. I love it.
So, I'm sorry OP (Original Poster)(not OnePlus), I realize this may not help you directly, but I really do feel your frustration, and just wanted to share my experience. Maybe someone may be helped a bit. And, no, I don't work for any telecom co. My job requires good phone signal etc and it has to be reliable, thus my taking a chance on T-Mobile.
Best wishes.
Oh hey original poster, the link you put is the one I looked at before switching carriers, because it said T-Mobile was the best for OP8P, and I agree completely. Good tech support too.

OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro on T-Mobile 5G
As you may have expected, T-Mobile is the best-supported carrier for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The unlocked models of both phones support T-Mobile's Sub-6 5G network, meaning you'll get the same network access as many of the phones it sells directly. T-Mobile's Sub-6 5G is the portion of the network that operates on lower frequencies, and has the widest coverage — you'll find its Sub-6 5G layering most of the same footprint as its LTE network.
The phones also support Sprint's mid-band Sub-6 network, which was the core reason T-Mobile purchased Sprint in the first place. So as T-Mobile starts to integrate Sprint's spectrum into its new larger network, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro are ready for it.
5G on T-Mobile: Everything you need to know
Curiously, though, neither phone supports T-Mobile's mmWave 5G network, which is admittedly small right now but is a main pillar of its overall 5G rollout nationwide — particularly in dense cities. This is even the case for the OnePlus 8 that T-Mobile will be selling directly, which is a head-scratcher.
For most people, Sub-6 5G is more important, especially in the next year, because T-Mobile's mmWave network is very small and only available in parts of a handful of cities. But it will become more and more important, so if you plan on keeping your OnePlus 8 for a couple of years, keep in mind that you won't have access to T-Mobile's whole 5G network as it grows.
====================
I just bought the OP 8 Pro from one plus and the only thing not working VOwifi but VOLTE is working fine and so is visual VM and now so is 5G for me yay . I do know when you BYOD you need to chat with support and provision your line for CDMA-Less if that's not added to your line things will not work there is a way to get VoWifi working but i never used it on my other phones so not really a big issue for me. i can see it being an issue for people with bad signal at home. i have had good luck using phones on VZW as long as they were certified as allowed on their network
Kind of related, I have a OnePlus 8 IN2013 on Verizon (if you are wondering why the EU model its because it was the only model I could find in Onyx Black) LTE and everything works fine on it but I wonder if I can get low band 5g enabled using the method posted further up. I already know I cant get mmwave 5g and honestly dont care but I cant for the life of me find what bands Verizon is using for their low band 5g
