is it worth rooting the Razer phone 2? - Razer Phone 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello everybody I'm curious here as to if it's worth it to root this phone? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Why wouldn't u? It brings many fun features and allows you to further customize your phone. Plus I highly doubt razer will release any big updates in the future so you might as well just root it and have fun.

I second that. Also, ad blocking...
I run Samsung browser with root ad blocking and that alone was worth the root process.

Can't decide if I should root my atrix or not

Hi there,
I am debating if I should root my Atrix or not. I checked out few posts and they seem a bit complecated. Also, I found this article saying carriers will track down rooted devices and restricted services.
By the way, can I still install some of Motorola o/s for dock stations? I have a multimedia and a car dock.
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html#post65013
Any thoughts?
No one will track you down and restrict you. And it's very safe to root.
Just for apps like Adfree which kills advertisements, this is reason enough for me to root! Not to mention super helpful things like customer recovery to back things up, the ability to sideload (install non-market apps if you're on AT&T), etc.
Android is quite open source but rooting opens up another amazing realm of extremely essential apps.

I will take your word for it then! Just kidding. Would you be able recommend any good root techniques on the forum? I think there are few methods and am not sure which one is the best.
Thank you!
I say root it. I rooted mine and i love it this way. I had mine for only two days before I rooted it. I was a little nervous at first and felt that i really didnt want to do it, but the benefits were too great with a rooted phone than without a rooted phone. I am on the AT&T network and i hate it when someone tries to tell me what I can't do with something I purchased. Trust me when i say that you are going to want software that is not in the market as well.
And... I really, really love the fact that I don't need to be docked to use my WebTop.
Again... i say root it.

Gladroot. It's the easiest and can enable tethering and sideloading as well.
You must be on 1.2.6 to root. You can run their first script which will root it. You can then do AT&T's download and run their second script which will root that too. BOOM!
It shouldn't take any longer than 10 minutes.
Well... there was that one thing where AT&T is supposedly locking out, or might be locking out phones that have been determined to be rooted. But the fact of the matter is, if they do that with absolutely no reason other than the phone being rooted, i'm sure you'll see a class action lawsuit about it since rooting/jailbreaking a cell phone is legal now according to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The only reason i can see them disabling service is if you root it, and use one of the alternate methods of tethering, and wind up using a TON of bandwidth.... well over what anyone would even remotely do on just the phone if they didn't have any tethering package or way to tether. Then you'd basically be using their networks in a way that could be deemed illegal. But there's no issue with just rooting it to use applications not approved by the carrier or phone manufacturer.
Would you want to be admin on your own computer?
I think rooting is a must. The use of sideloading alone is worth it. I would hate to not be able to use the Amazon Appstore, Ive really come to like it.
One thing to mention though. The Blockbuster app detects root and wont allow content to be purchased because of DRM concerns. I dont know if this will be a problem with future apps.
Yeah, I did!
I rooted my Atrix with "gladroot" last night. Can't wait to customize it now.
Thank you very much for your valid inputs everyone!!!
Where are these non market apps that everyone speaks of

UPDATE: Root for [Sprint, CDMA] Tab w/ Gingerbread 2.3.4 + Extras

Update:
Looks like they've got root running over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161033
Flash using ODIN, super easy!
GTALK with Video! See this post! Super easy install!:
http://android.modaco.com/content/software/339390/r1-12-may-google-video-talk-installer/#entry0
If anybody knows of a way to get the crt animation going that they seemed to have removed for the tab, please post or pm! Thanks!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Don't see a post for this, maybe this is dumb, but good to have this information east at hand for others. Please inform me if I'm wrong of if any progress is made (hopefully soon!)
There is currently no exploit out to root the Sprint Tab on 2.3.4
Super One Click Root will not work, even with GingerBreak, nor will z4root
Looking forward to some sweet progress tho!
If only I were a dev...
The phone call function is even more important for me, but seems no replacement of original phone*.apk from other devices is available now.

Because the topic has been moved
The only thing I was using root for was to remove the annoying startup and shutdown videos. There aren't any great ROMs for the Sprint Tab, and the OEM build is pretty solid, so I don't think root access is a big deal for many users at the moment.

I wish people would stop passing their own opinions as that of "many users".
Titanium backup, Google Talk with video, AdFree Android, Chainfire3D, drocap2... Shall I go on listing awesome and invaluable apps that require root access?
Has anyone else seen this.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-tab-on-android-2-3-3-gingerbread/
I have not tried it just came accross it. I only got Gingerbread running a few minutes ago.\
Edit: This is for Android 2.3.3 and NOT the current Sprint update of 2.3.4.
I'm hoping for a custom kernel with root and CWM soon, and I'd help expedite the process if someone needs a tester. Or even someone to do all the work (as long as there's some direction, i know i could manage to piece things together and compile it, i just suck with actual pure coding)
missing my Ti Backup and others as Chahk mentioned.
Next time use search before you post a question.
It was on the front page of general:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1157064
I think it doesn't help that sprint's tab isn't very popular and doesn't have the developers like the GSM does. I know nothing about it but I would guess that even though people are developing roms, that finding a root exploit is a completely different animal. I'm guessing since 2.3.4 isn't on a lot of phones yet doesn't help.

Sorry...I didn't mean to bother you. I've been reading some of the GB threads over the past couple days and it seemed to me that most people weren't that bummed about losing root for the time being, myself included. I could definitely be wrong, which is why I said "I don't think". Again, sorry if I bothered you with the post.
The biggest thing I miss is tethering from the phone.

I'm going back to 2.2 until root is achieved for 2.3.4. I mainly got the tab so I could tether on the go. Having to find wifi while out and about when you want to get online is difficult sometimes. If you're lucky to find open and free, many times they have ports blocked. You can only 80 or 8080. I've got wd live and roku and boxee for Netflix and crap.
im definately frustrated i dont have root. i want to put some apks in system/app and cant through crippled file explorers. also, i want to start pushing out some themes. the SGT has gotten little love and that needs to change. i was holding out on FROYO cause i knew it wouldnt be long till everyone was on GB. ive been talking with DRockstar about getting a cwm put together specifically for the SGT and that should get things rolling.
please give me your feedback.

Not at all. Those are great tools and I will be running them again on my Tab once an exploit is discovered. But for the time being, not having those tools doesn't really affect my day to day use of the device much. That includes listening to Slacker, using Facebook, email, browsing, Qik video chat, Netflix, etc. There are a lot of people like me who like the power that comes with root, but not having it for a few weeks or even months isn't going to kill them.

One of the first things I did with root was adjust the pixel density in the build.prop file so the icons didn't look so cartoonish. If the GB update breaks that and I can't fix it, then it might kills me. With the larger icons, the Zeam launcher doesn't even look right at all.

is it hopeless waiting for turbo development?

I see there is a thread abt a reward for who ever makes an exploit to root the turbo.
I have an upgrade available but I don't want to waste it on a phone that can't even be rooted. Another thing is that this decision is on limited time. Because once the turbo gets lollipop , rooting will be out the window . so if you wait to long to get the turbo and it's shipped from the factory with lollipop, your screwed from the get go. So judging by the older lines of "moto droids" do you think or have read anything online abt development being slim to none?
Or any future plans on a developers edition ?
The nexus 6 is just to big for me. And the moto x is just not for me

You are forgetting that there is another variant of the Turbo, the Maxx one that will come with unlockable bootloader and free of Verizon crap. People will make it their way to get on of those, and probably development will be significantly more active that with Turbo.
On the other hand, Lollipop doesn't mean no more root, there are already devices with Lollipop and gained root few days ago, so it shouldn't be a worry.
:fingers-crossed:
Correct about root and lollipop but what's the point? Why do you NEED root and unlocked boot loader when lollipop gets here? Xposed won't work. Lollipop will be the os that negates the need for root.

Xposed doesn't work yet, but likely will in the future. And there are other things to use root for than just Xposed. Such as Tasker, AdFree, Cerberus, etc. Root works great on my Nexus 7 with Lollipop, albeit without Xposed.
I mainly want/need root for ARLiberator or ARUnchained. Right now I can cast to my receiver and get sound but ARU gave full mirroring and allowed me to control my phone through my headunit (with root). Combined with Tasker to automate and it was fantastic. Xposed was real nice to have and I'm sure it will be updated for L at some point but I wasn't really using a whole lot on there I'll miss. Same goes for battery tweaker like Greenify. It was awesome with root and combined with Xposed but w/ the monster battery on this thing and the improvements with Project Volta I'm thinking I won't miss it so much.

You can disable those apps now which is essentially the same thing.
Disable works just as good
Hadn't tried that. Just hid them using a launcher. OK, I'll disable them. Gracias!
I don't think it's hopeless. Just look at the bounty. No, it's no guarantee a dev will obtain that full amount but it show's that we're interested.
My guess and hope is that the Middle Man will come back and we'll be able to get unlock codes. It's our best shot.
In the meantime I'll stay at KitKat and cross my fingers. Root for me will give me custom DPI's which 4.7"+ phones need so badly. Besides that I'm doing just fine without root. Yeah, a few customization options would be fine but stock Motorola Android flies!
Only thing I really want/need is WiFi Tether. I've managed to tether using a USB but the process is way more complex and only allows for one device at a time.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
Without root you cannot manipulate the hosts file meaning you cannot block ads completely as you can with root. This alone is enough to make root worthwhile for me because I despise ads. I also like to change fonts at the system level and make many other customizations that require root and lollipop in no way negates those needs.
Not that my opinion or likes and dislikes matter. And that's the thing, people who say root is not needed speak for themselves just as I speak for myself and no one else. I don't ever say YOU need root or YOU do not need root because I have no business deciding what someone else does or does not need. Just saying...
I just think it's going to take some time gents. Phone has been out for what? Two weeks?

Agreed. This is the on thing I really want. I can live without the rest of the stuff. If I could pay for an app that worked for wifi tether I would do that and probably be happy without root all together.
I had the RAZR maxx HD. I thought we'd never get root for the longest time. It took a while - a bunch of months, at least, but we got it.
Now, the maxx HD never was nearly as popular as the droid turbo. That's a fact.
I'm sure someone out there will find a way. It's not about if, but when. That's my opinion, at least
2 things I want root for..
Messing with speaker output
And shutter speed of the camera
This phone will probably never be rooted, but if you aren't okay with that then why would you ever buy this device?
Maybe I'm not understanding this, but why is a developers edition needed? Why dont you just unlock developer mode on the phone you get? I did.

I personally am finding very little reason to root anymore. The only added benefit would be adblocking but I can live with it just for Android Pay. Native tethering works. System UI Tuner settings does most of the things I wanted for GravityBox.

Does imprint still work if rooted?
Personally i couldn't care less about paying with my phone when my wallet and everything I need to carry is with me regardless. Regardless of that people have gotten android pay working with rooted devices. Root, adblock / do your thing and the unroot. Add your cards and pay as you normally would. Most people don't need root 24/7 so you can have your cake and eat it too.
Don't want to root? Enjoy your ads. Or use one of the proxy services just hope they treat your data well.
Far from it, there will be plenty of XDA N6p roms to go around! Happy Flashing

Root and custom roms are not synonymous. You can have root on the stock rom on your phone and you can have a custom rom without root. For example, I have a custom rom right now without root, as I need to use apps that don't work with root, but I still want features from a custom rom.

There are no custom roms. There is only Chroma.
i doubt it will die however paying with your phone has put a dent in the community as well as made android have more security because of it, plus apps like adguard, and for samsung there are disable apps that don't require root and no ads and app disabling are the only two things some people want.
Won't die. Even more so in countries like mine which refuse to support Android Pay or any other form of mobile credit payment

God no root is a massive pain.
No ad blocking, going from no ads to all ads between my 6 and 6P even XDA is bad !
Also I like to hide the nav bar to negate the burn in issues of AMOLED, don't care what anyone says these screens WILL burn in its because of the technology.
3. Tweeked stock ROMs with proper reboot options and circle battery and such
Wait for Xposed.
When Xposed is available you can install a cloak and use Pay.
I use pay on my LG G3 with Xposed and root.
Cards need to be added without Xposed installed.
To use Pay you either need to disable root or cloak it.
Not a big deal.

To root or not to root

Hi All
I will be receiving my OnePlus 6T (in thunder purple) this week and wanted to know if there is any benefit to rooting anymore, having read posts about widevine L1-L3 etc
I'd like to install the notification mod, speaker mod and the google camera app, (or anything else that is recommended) however i'm not sure if i can do these without root
I like to tinker with my phones and im pretty clued up with this sort of thing, ive just been out of the scene for a couple of years!
Looking forward to peoples views and comments.
Thanks all
I root just for the speaker mod alone. :good:

Thanks, how big is the widevine issue once unlocked and rooted?
I use to root, but haven't in the last 3-4 years. The Huawei Mate phones I've used, really didn't need it. Pretty clean, and nothing I really needed to root anyway. Plus, unless you tweak them, I wouldn't be able to use Google pay.
Well, I was happy without root since the Note 5 but since Google is eager to slowly kill off various important apps that used to work without root on Oreo then I was forced to root this 6T since it's running on Pie. I think it's worth it now. I have call recording natively baked into the phone app, I can use Swift once more and I forgot how useful Titanium Backup is. I'm getting ready to try the speaker mod, as well.
Speaker mod seems useless. I root for adblocking without VPN (AdAway), root firewall (AFWall), and themes (Substratum).
I was a crack-flasher from way back and I don't find the need to unlock/root. I'd like Adaway but DNS66 pulls some of it's host files from Adaway.
I stopped rooting about a year or 2 ago with the note 4 and had no plans on it for the 6t but viper4android works perfectly so I rooted just for that. I have adguard for adblocker. As time goes on I might add some modules from magisk but as for now it's great. Titanium back up is always super useful as well.

Thanks guys,
Some mixed feelings there. I’m guessing the speaker mod is not worth the hassle and the ad blocking can be achieved without root (looking at you blokada)
Not read up much on sunstratum, that’ll be my next to do...
Hmmm... decisions, decisions as I don’t want to decide to root 6 months down the line and find out I have to format my device (unlock bootloader)

I personally love my 6t being rooted... I use adaway with Magisk v 18 which now has a Systemless host support in its (magisk)settings for ad blocking.. Substratum engine also works in magisk v 18 mod section. Swift black substratum theme works flawlessly.
Ex Kernel manager is great too.
I'm running ElementalX kernel 3.0.9. which is very smooth.
I updated to OOS 9.0.7. using TWRP fajita 3.2.3-8.
I have the stereo speaker mod also. It's not that impressive, but ok.
Well that's my 2 cents. personally I love this phone so much more now that it's rooted..
Hope this helps your decision.

It's not a hassle at all. So easy on this phone.
Speaker mod is great. I love it.

Unlock the BL and install Magisk.
No real hassle. You can take update locally and reroot.
The very first thing out of the box for my device was unlock the BL and root.

So is the Widevine such a big issue with root?

Widevine is not directly related to root but with unlocked bootloader.
No issue with magisk and banking apps except a few that I don't remember of. Google pay works well
sounds like someone reading my threads...there's nothing here that wasn't mentioned in countless other threads. Weigh the pros and cons and make a decision...first time I've gone rootless in years.
OK.. got my handset.. its a beauty
1st thing i have done is Unlocked the bootloader.. so simple!
Will install magisk over the weekend and set phone up properly then. Have other family priorites that have come up to deal with at the moment.
Thanks all. Need to start reading, dont want to flash wrong recovery.

For apps like Blokada, it's always running in the background and uses a VPN. If you use an actual VPN, this means you can't use Blokada while your VPN is running. AdAway just edits the host file. No app running in background, no VPN.
