is it hopeless waiting for turbo development? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

I see there is a thread abt a reward for who ever makes an exploit to root the turbo.
I have an upgrade available but I don't want to waste it on a phone that can't even be rooted. Another thing is that this decision is on limited time. Because once the turbo gets lollipop , rooting will be out the window . so if you wait to long to get the turbo and it's shipped from the factory with lollipop, your screwed from the get go. So judging by the older lines of "moto droids" do you think or have read anything online abt development being slim to none?
Or any future plans on a developers edition ?
The nexus 6 is just to big for me. And the moto x is just not for me

Yeah i dont think so..This community is pretty inactive.

You are forgetting that there is another variant of the Turbo, the Maxx one that will come with unlockable bootloader and free of Verizon crap. People will make it their way to get on of those, and probably development will be significantly more active that with Turbo.
On the other hand, Lollipop doesn't mean no more root, there are already devices with Lollipop and gained root few days ago, so it shouldn't be a worry.
:fingers-crossed:

Correct about root and lollipop but what's the point? Why do you NEED root and unlocked boot loader when lollipop gets here? Xposed won't work. Lollipop will be the os that negates the need for root.

Xposed doesn't work yet, but likely will in the future. And there are other things to use root for than just Xposed. Such as Tasker, AdFree, Cerberus, etc. Root works great on my Nexus 7 with Lollipop, albeit without Xposed.

I mainly want/need root for ARLiberator or ARUnchained. Right now I can cast to my receiver and get sound but ARU gave full mirroring and allowed me to control my phone through my headunit (with root). Combined with Tasker to automate and it was fantastic. Xposed was real nice to have and I'm sure it will be updated for L at some point but I wasn't really using a whole lot on there I'll miss. Same goes for battery tweaker like Greenify. It was awesome with root and combined with Xposed but w/ the monster battery on this thing and the improvements with Project Volta I'm thinking I won't miss it so much.

Just want root access to freeze the VZW crap. My 2 cents.

You can disable those apps now which is essentially the same thing.

Disable works just as good

Hadn't tried that. Just hid them using a launcher. OK, I'll disable them. Gracias!

I don't think it's hopeless. Just look at the bounty. No, it's no guarantee a dev will obtain that full amount but it show's that we're interested.
My guess and hope is that the Middle Man will come back and we'll be able to get unlock codes. It's our best shot.
In the meantime I'll stay at KitKat and cross my fingers. Root for me will give me custom DPI's which 4.7"+ phones need so badly. Besides that I'm doing just fine without root. Yeah, a few customization options would be fine but stock Motorola Android flies!

Only thing I really want/need is WiFi Tether. I've managed to tether using a USB but the process is way more complex and only allows for one device at a time.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app

Without root you cannot manipulate the hosts file meaning you cannot block ads completely as you can with root. This alone is enough to make root worthwhile for me because I despise ads. I also like to change fonts at the system level and make many other customizations that require root and lollipop in no way negates those needs.
Not that my opinion or likes and dislikes matter. And that's the thing, people who say root is not needed speak for themselves just as I speak for myself and no one else. I don't ever say YOU need root or YOU do not need root because I have no business deciding what someone else does or does not need. Just saying...

I just think it's going to take some time gents. Phone has been out for what? Two weeks?

Agreed. This is the on thing I really want. I can live without the rest of the stuff. If I could pay for an app that worked for wifi tether I would do that and probably be happy without root all together.

I had the RAZR maxx HD. I thought we'd never get root for the longest time. It took a while - a bunch of months, at least, but we got it.
Now, the maxx HD never was nearly as popular as the droid turbo. That's a fact.
I'm sure someone out there will find a way. It's not about if, but when. That's my opinion, at least

2 things I want root for..
Messing with speaker output
And shutter speed of the camera

This phone will probably never be rooted, but if you aren't okay with that then why would you ever buy this device?

Maybe I'm not understanding this, but why is a developers edition needed? Why dont you just unlock developer mode on the phone you get? I did.

Confirmed for our Moto X gen1 devices!
Maybe I will remember to do the right thing and wait until root is found before updating this time....
Funny. The Moto X (first gen) is the first phone I had in years that I did not feel the urge to root. And I used to be a compulsive flasher. About the only thing I miss is being able to easily block ads, and even those I can handle. Makes life easier....

At home at least, have you tried to use open DNS to block them? You can set up your router to use openDNS as the DNS it hands out to client and then any of the known ad domains that are erksome you can block at the DNS level similar to what you did with adblocking via /etc/hosts previously with root.

This!
My last phone was a samsung and it was nearly useless with touchwiz and bloat.
The only thing that really annoys me on the moto X is the "AT&T" constantly in notification bar.
In the latest update they have an option to disable the carrier in the status bar. Should be on this screen. Mine disappeared for some reason but I looked it up and it should he there.

I've been the same way with my Moto X. I did try running TowelPieRoot for a few weeks recently with Xposed but was having some weird glitches so yesterday I went ahead and factory reset again and updated to 4.4.4. I don't feel like I'm missing enough to make it worth the trouble, and I want to get 5.0 on it as soon as possible which will mean not waiting till root(assuming root is possible). I've still got my Nexus 4 for flashing stuff and have been running an Android L port on it for a few months now; it's pretty awesome and I can't wait to get the new look and features on my Moto X.

VZW dev edition here. My experience has been similar. I am rooted since there are several Tasker things I like to do that require it. Also one or two Xposed things. Never had a glitch. I'd stay unrooted but miss the tweaks when they're not there.
The upgrade to 4.4.4 was enough of a hassle that I questioned whether to stay stock or not afterwards. But missing my Tasker apps and wifi tether led me back to root.
But damn, this phone is close to perfect.

Upgrade for a rooted Moto X
My Moto X is rooted. Does that still entail for an OTA upgrade once the Lollipop drops? Or will I need to resort to some additional tricks to make that happen?
You have to restore the stock nandroid backup and flash the stock recovery

Yeah it won't be hard to root if you have an unlocked bootloader. I'm keeping mine locked until my warranty runs out. There's no way of knowing if there will be another solution like TowelPieRoot to achieve root w/out unlocking the bootloader for Android 5.0.
So, with Android 5.0 on the horizon for our Moto X, should it be expected that at first lots of things will be broken with xposed, and gravity box and such?

I miss root :(

Hey, new to the droid maxx section. I been with android sense they first came out. I been rooted sense day one. Now my friend give me this droid maxx as a gift cux he got the new iPhone 6s. Now he updated to the latest ota n I am frustrated I cant root this device. So sad rite now I miss adaway root explorer custom ROM custom recovery anything bout root I miss. Just wanted to share my sadness lol

The only part of your list I can relate to is adaway.
I used to ROM my Samsung phones to debloat and get better performance.
The Maxx just plain works as is.
Now the WiFi tethering root would allow would be nice.
I have rooted for a while now, and I am not missing it as much as I used to. All that flashing was out of control... Especially because the builds were sort of sketchy on my Razr M. Just not enough Dev support for the phones I seem to like. The Maxx works quite well as it is, and now I am impatiently waiting for Lollipop. I still flash builds on my Razr M once and a while.. Now that I have Maxx, the builds have gotten better.
I feel the pain, had an unlocked bootloader on my Maxx until I had to send the phone back in for warranty work. Now I'm stuck with locked 4.4.4. *sigh* I have a Moto X Developer Edition on the way so I can play.
At lease I am not alone lol. I do like flashing ROM. I usually stay wit the ones that is more stable. I play games on my fone so the more space I can make the better I feel haven't seen lollipop so hopefully I get it due to I have my maxx on metro pcs working perfect 4g LTE

Seems after getting the Note 4 I have found my self wondering how I was ever with out root. Its crazy I cant stand this phone with out root. Its maddening to know I have Ads and apps I don't need. If Verizon didn't offer this phone at Christmas for 150.00 I would have never got it. #1 Reason no root was out yet but I took a chance. I know now or always have that you DEVS work hard to get stuff done. This was just a big ....

This is exactly why I sold my Verizon n4 and got a nexus 6. I have never had a phone without root. It was driving me nuts as well. I love the phone but couldn't deal with no root. I check back periodically to see if root has been achieved. Maybe one day I will have a n4 again.
Meh... You can disable the bloat with the stock app manager... Yeah, not 100%, but I am not gonna obsess about 4 or 5 tiny apps or services running in the background that I don't see or notice anyway... I am not that much of a control freak... It's a phone, not the center of my universe that I feel compelled to bend 100% to my will.. hehe
Root would be nice I guess, but on these newer phones, the appeal is less and less. I can skin it however I want with dozens of launchers, and debloating a few extra apps with root won't make it any faster...
By the time root comes out, the devs will have moved on to newer phones so the ROM support will suck anyway...
It's unfortunate. I would love to have root access on this phone for various reasons . My next phone will have it, even if I have to leave Verizon.
Sadly, the Verizon Note 4 is never going to see it...at least not before the next round of Note flagships
First post, just got a note 4. Had a rooted lg g2 before it. I'm loving the note so far (only had it about a week), but I use limelight to play computer games on my phone and it doesn't support mouse input very well without root access. . . As has been said I've disabled most of the bloat, but it would be nice to be able to just get rid of it. Also Sixaxis controller requires root to pair a ps3 or 4 controller to my phone... I hope root comes soon, maybe I should become a developer to help the cause. I too thank you for all your work.

You can disable any app you want using adb shell.
This issue around root has been interesting for me. For awhile, I was like you, OP and many others who feel they must have root. However, after about 5 weeks of use now, I find myself perfectly happy with the Note 4 just the way it is and I wonder if I'll even take root-ability into consideration when making my next phone purchase.

I am with you. Root used to be mandatory IMHO, as phone makers just didn't seem to be able to get the phone's to work properly out of the box... slow, clunky, missing things, instability, outdated software, etc...
Nowadays, I just don't see that. Typically it is the ROMs that are unstable, miss features, etc... I see thread after thread of this great new ROM! But the camera is flunky, doesn't have data, or the IR blaster doesn't work, etc...
I had an LG G2 and the ROMs didn't impress me much. Went to a GS5 and was even less impressed. None of the ones that I tried were measurably faster than stock, none were 100% functional, or if they were, they were just tweaked stock ROMs and so what's the point? Risk warranty issues or bricking it, or not able to get OTA's, for what? Just to be able to brag to my nerd friends that I had a transparent status bar because a regular one bothers me SOOOO SOOOO much? LOL
The Note 4, is amazing. Debloat it with ADB or with the app manager, install your favorite launcher and icon pack to get the look and feel that you want, and know that it will work 100%, it's fast, stable and no warranty issues, no being left out when Lollipop drops and you want it but it breaks root again so you have to stick with the old software, etc...
I'm with you guys. I come from a Nexus4 and still have a Nexus7. I miss root for Titanium backup and that's about it. Sure I'm going to once it drops but the note is a very capable device able to stand on its own.

You can disable most of the things in the app manager. There are only a few that you can't, but then you can do that with ADB. Either way, you can debloat the phone, without root, and without risk of messing up your warranty or the ability to get the Lollipop OTA in a few weeks.
Also, a lot of reviews have shown that disabling everything under the sun to free up RAM, can actually slow your phone down, not speed it up.
Getting the true crap disabled, is the biggest thing and anyone can do that without root today.
It doesn't have to be the center of someone's Universe for them to enjoy changing it and making it their own, people do this will all types of things. Some would call it a "hobby" or an interest. Lots of people enjoy spending hours on Facebook or playing video games, others enjoy tinkering with their devices.
I went for a while with a retail Note 4 and ended up getting a DE. There are too many things that I missed, here are some of them:
Add WiFi HotSpot Toggle and Bypass Subscription Check
Add Flashlight Toggle
AdAway
Titanium Backup
Viper4Android
Root Explorer
Xposed Framework with the following modules:
-Youtube AdAway
-Play Store Link In App Info
-Wanam
-Swype Keyboard Tweaks
-Notify Clean (Clean notification area)
-No Map Tips (Disable Google Play Maps location accuracy tips)
-Google Play Music Listen Later (Change the default Google Play Music pane and tabs)
-Disable Clear Defaults Dialog
Chrome Pie (Add Pie control to Chrome)

Root by March 1. Over/Under Poll

Will the Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Retail see root by March 1, 2015? Wanted to see what you guys think in a poll.
There are threads where this should go.
There are people messing around with getting root, but nothing real serious. Unfortunately, the Verizon retail Note 4 isn't likely to ever get root, certainly not by March. No chance.
There's a radio button for that

I'm mobile, can't see the poll. I'd say between lollipop possibilities and recently discussed exploits, 60% chance.
Are there android phones in the past or current that has never seen root access?
The only thing I use root for is Titanium Backup so I can freeze bloatware. That is about it, but I have enough memory and quite frankly the stock works very well for me.

They are crackin' pretty hard at it over on the AT&T side. If they find a way, it should work for us. Here's hoping. This thing runs great but these dangforblasted white screens are driving me insane. Time-line? Who knows. The sooner the better.

This was actually my motivation for starting this thread. It seems like it's heating up a bit over there and I was wondering if that had changed anyone's opinion from the first "Root Poll" thread started a while ago. I'm certainly more optimistic after seeing all of the activity. On the other hand history does seem to shoe that the big advances seem to come from people who have been silently waiting in the wings.
Yea it has been a while since I put up that root poll. It's since died out which is understandable.
My point of view is (and yes I voted) lol
I don't believe well see root in this device! I fear that this is the way it's going to be for most new devices rolling out from here on out. Unless you purchase a dev edition.
To me. The phone runs very well! Use the blocking script and u can free up some ram. Otherwise the only things Im missing the most is cleaning up the notification bar and TiBu. Otherwise I'm happy!
Course this is just my opinion.
Carry on

Color Status Bar gives you full control over the notification panel without root. Helium retains a lot of TiBu functionality without root.

Once I can find a way to spoof GPS without having "Allow Mock Location" I won't be obsessed with this phone getting root. I love the phone regardless.

Not gonna happen
Not going to happen. Saving for iPhone 6 plus were jailbreak works no matter what carrier. Maybe the m8. Does the m8 have root on verizon even? It's going to take me a while to save 800 bucks, maybe we will get lucky. Stock would not be bad, but suckwiz is killing me.
I've been optimistic for those on the note 4 verizon version, unfortunatley the sad truth is, its either going to never come to note 4 or will be almost a year till root is achieved. I'm going to be staying with my note 3 for a long time. Possibly forever, until note edge/edge 2 note 5 gets root and custom recovery. Just my opinion, I'm cheering you guys on, it's hard without dev support. Once the dev support get's tripled than might have a better chance. But till then, your gonna have to wait it out. Best of luck and I'm rooting for your guys
I am not optimistic. I suppose it is the DE edition for the N5 or off to another manufacturer whose phone can be rooted.
Can't really put the blame on the manufacturer. I understand that tmobile variant of the Note 4 can be rooted. It's a carrier thing. Maybe Samsung just has a more secure method. But it's only there because Verizon wants it there.

You wouldn't like to be able to write to sdcard using any method of your choice?
Nope. MLB at Bat app. If I want to watch my home team I can't be in the tv/radio "broadcast territory" of either of the teams playing. On my previous phone I used "FakeGPS". Apk has to be copied to "/system/priv-app" in order to work with "Allow Mock Locations" turned off... MLB at Bat app knows if Allow Mock is turned on.
And maybe it was PEBKAC but I'm pretty sure I tried renaming a picture on my SD Card and was denied. Insanity.

[BOUNTY]-Kingroot-Without Data Connection- Who's in

I propose we create a Bounty for the Keys to Kingroot without a data connection that is not lost until we manually reboot. . I will start it off with a $100 pledge. Instead of calling it temporary root, I would call it Root On Demand. It some ways it is actually better than permanent root. I don't think we will ever find permanent root for the N900V unless we get a leak from Samsung.
All you have to do is reverse engineer the root that the Kingroot team has already found. It must be a simple process that is really easily adaptable to a wide variety of Android Smart-Phones, Otherwise they would sell the Application for individual use. The only reason I can think of that would make it unprofitable is that once the secret gets out anyone could do it.
We need a scientific investigation to discovers what changes are being made to the phone to attain root. It is possible to use Kingroot without even setting up a email account. If you have the apps you want to run backed up.
I would think the Kinroot root is being stored as a image file in RAM because the ROM is write protected and root is lost with a hard boot.
Root is also lost when a app first ask for root privileges. So it could be that the Kingroot root fix has to be rewritten into RAM as a bundle for each application that is added. Kingroot has to dump the last file to write a new bundle file or maybe it has to remount the system. I have found that Titanium Backup is able to put applications back on Kingroots' Root Authorization list after a factory restore, but Titanium Backup can not install the Kingroot root because the phone need to be rooted with Kingroot to run Titanium Backup. I know it's confusing. Anybody got any clues as to how it works would be appreciated.
I'm probably going to get banned for this but..... shut the edited up dude. I'm tired of your pointless posts

Nah...I would never. How about this...
In the words of Captain America: "Language!"
:good:
@doctor-cool the guy posting above me kind of has a point. It is obvious you know little about the rooting industry and methods. There is no such thing as "simply reverse engineer" processes in Android. Also no bounty would be worth it to someone like these guys. Permanent root is worth well over $100K in the private sector to specific industries. As for the reason for the data connection, Kingroot supports 1000's of models of phones and needs a specific process for certain ones, so they check which model phone you have then pull the needed files from their server and attempt root. By keeping everything on their servers they can improve the existing files and add new support when it comes about. The first company that we saw do this Kingo Root explained that it takes GBs of files to support the root method so it is impossible to package it into a reasonable size file.
Another thing to think about...if it was that easy to reverse engineer something, don't you think there would have been all kinds of copies of Chainfire's root methods and SuperSu floating around?
The exploit used was released at blackhat. Those working on the permanent root solution are doing so for sales to the private industries I mentioned. When that money is exhausted maybe some altruistic root developer will release it publicly.
So no one will get you "the keys"
It's all about the money. Why let real developers have any fun when your can make tons of money in the other sectors..... I think I'm going to just sell my Note 4, and go with something that's REALLY developer friendly, a Motorola Nexus 6. It has the BEST support of any phone I've ever seen, plus it's bootloader unlocked!

Don't get me wrong, the Note 4 is sweet. But from a developer standpoint, it's useless. I actually use the S-Pen on a regular basis.
The OP has a good point in that it would be nice not having to contact Chinese servers and waste data each time you had to re-root.
