Stock messaging app wake screen? - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

This is weird one, I'm familiar that the screen doesnt wake when a notification is received. But just now I received a text via the stock messaging app which woke up the screen. Fortunately I had Nice Catch enabled to show this .
I never recalled that the screen would wake from any app based notifications. Is this feature unique for Samsung massaging app?

I believe so. My screen only wakes for the Samsung messages. Kinda annoying. I wish it would just flash the AOD instead

It is annoying that the screen turns on , I agree.
I tried googling this symptom and most results I found were for folks that wanted the screen to wake , which I don't. Its just this app doing it.

I agree, it is very Annoying. Especially when you have chatty friends, family and wife who text you ALL DAY LONG lol. The phone never sleeps during the day because of texts alone. And I wear a Galaxy watch so I get notified of the texts anyway, i definitely don't need the screen waking up too.

I'd be using another messaging app by now. However tmobile RCS messaging only works on the stock Samsung messaging app on my tmobile branded device.

Just turn off the stock messaging notifications to 'Sound Only' for the specific sim and additionally go to Settings - Notifications-"In-app notifications" and turn off 'preview messages'. This should stop from waking the screen.

That didn't work either. I had to set it for the attached notification.
So now I don't get the screen wakes when receiving a text message which is a good thing, however the device no longer vibrates or shows icon on lock screen either.

You should have a 'Vibrate' option in your message app settings. (See attached). Not sure if its carrier dependent.
ASFIK the lock screen settings takes precedence over "preview messages" settings. So even if I turn off preview messages in the 'in-app notifications' but keep 'show content' or 'hide content' in the lock screen settings, the lock screen will show icon/actual message. What you could try is have on-tap AOD enabled and disable preview & lock screen content, that way you can see the icon on AOD screen. Alternatively, have the 'blink light' option turned on in message settings so the led at least notifies you.

Notification Style - 'Sound' only
Lock Screen - "Dont Show Notifications"
In-App Notifications -> Preview Messages - Turn off.
Am not sure if the icon would appear on lock screen. Try out with AOD On-tap enabled. There is no 'blink light' option for you, but you at least get a sound alert & vibrate without waking up the screen.

I tried it just now, it doesn't wake up screen like it didn't in silent and minimized mode. However it does give me a audible notification which is good.
But still doesn't show icon on AOD. I use tap screen to show AOD.

Almost forgot about this. Tried multiple settings, so it seems sometimes it works and the icon appears on AOD, but mostly it does not. Seems to be a bug or I'm not able to figure this out??

Battery problems with CDMA hero...

I was looking over the Sprint forums to see if everyone else was having issues with their battery not lasting a day. It seems like there is a huge problem with the dialer keeping your phone on. I'm posting the first post here to spread the word, maybe we can get a fix with everyone in the know.
(Full thread HERE)
My friend and I both purchased Heros and we are both seeing pretty poor battery life. Using a couple of different things we believe we have figured out where the problem lies, but we are unsure how to fix it!
Here's what we know:
Menu < Settings < About Phone < Status < Awake Time
Both of ours have an awake time of 100%. According to other Android users, the lower this number is the better your battery life. So basically this is saying that even when the phone is off, it's not asleep. It is fully awake 100% of the time. Up time should not be the same as awake time.
Using an app called Spare Parts (Spare Parts) you can dig a little deeper.
Spare Parts < Battery History < Partial Wake Usage < Since Last Unplugged.
My phone is showing that the dialer has a wake lock for 16h. This appears to mean that the phone can't sleep because the dialer has locked it.
You can also check under "Other Usage." I have "Running", "Screen on", and "Phone on." Running says:
Time spent without sleeping: 16 hours (100%).

So now the problem is how do we fix it?
UPDATE ON PROGRESS:
I have made some progress! I downloaded a program from the market that was simply called Task Manager. I previously had checked out TasKiller and TaskControl but neither saw the dialer. I opened Task Manager and clicked on "Phone" and got "This task is not exported. don't switch or stop it." Well I stopped it anyways. Instantly after hitting my power button I began to see a time difference between Up Time and Awake Time (5 minute time difference now).
I was also able to call my phone and text it! After doing so "Phone" showed back up in Task Manager however it is still sleeping properly. I'm not sure what else this is effecting yet or if resetting the phone causes it to mess up again.
UPDATE 2:
So I had to get some sleep last night.

I will be doing lots of testing throughout the day. My phone slept about 7 hours through the night. I only had a 1% drop in battery life during the night! And I did receive a text this morning. The only thing I know for sure so far is that sending a text causes it to stop sleeping again. I will keep this thread updated as I run some tests today.
UPDATE 3:
So we have determined exactly when it happens. We tried all of the following:
receiving e-mail
checking e-mail
browsing the web
loading google maps and locking location
receiving text
reading text
making a phone call
receiving a phone call
Every single one allows the unit to go back to sleep without any issues. There are two things that prevent it from sleeping every time:
send a text
Turning the phone on with no activity
So sending a text is obvious. Every single time we sent a text, the phone would stop sleeping. Receiving a text is fine. What i mean by turning the phone on with no activity is if I turn the phone on and just let it boot up and disable the screen on it's own and never send or receive a text, it will stay awake even though the screen is off. The phone ends up turning the screen off before it actually boots 100%. Once I turn the phone back on and actually look at my home screen (after it's done booting) and then turn it off again, it will sleep properly.
I'll post more as we figure out more.

Very interesting... I'm subscribing to this thread.
So after sending a txt can you simply kill dialer again to put it back to sleep?

I'd imagine that it would work that way, but what a PITA
Anyone with a GSM version able to confirm that this doesn't happen on your device?
I'm at a 24% awake time with my CDMA Hero, and my uptime is 5:23:30
Not sure what I'm doing differently, but I am using Advanced Task Killer to auto-end all apps I don't explicitly exclude every 30 minutes. Maybe you've got a runaway process?
Ok so I'm using Handcent SMS now to try and avoid this problem but I feel like it's not doing anything considering I still get notifications from the regular messenging application. I set Handcent as the default SMS/MMS app but I still get two notifications in the notification panel: one from handcent one from Messenger.
Also... I'm going to miss the messenging widget.. handcent doesn't have one. Just a shortcut.
Same problem here I have an awake time of 100% what a bummer. I knew there must be a problem because when I got to work today my battery was at full charge, we cant use our phones at work and I felt like following the rules today lol so I didnt take my phone out not once. I showed it to my friend but I didnt turn it on because it got busy. Anyways i get off work only six hours later, short shift, and remember this is with 0% use and my battery was almost dead.
install chompsms or handsent..
this is what to do
go to spare parts, general, end buton behavious, select "go to sleep"
now every time you press the end call button, the phone should hopefully go to sleep
try it out and say if it makes a difference

Spare Parts didn't help, still showing as continuous uptime with "go to sleep" enabled. I can confirm through spare parts that the Dialer is the culprit (Battery history-->Change CPU Usage to Partial Wake Usage)
This is a huge bug, can't believe that they didn't catch this before launch.
subscribed too, this explains why my battery goes away so fast.
I'm gonna subscribe to this. We chances are we're gonna have to fix this one on our own much sooner than Sprint or HTC will release an official fix.
I just noticed this today, a reset fixed it but hopefully they will get a real fix out for it soon.
Good thing I don't send many text messages.

You can turn off the notification from the Hero's Messaging app, There should be an option in the app settings. Also, you can still use the Widget to read messages, but make sure you don't use it for sending them. It seems that sending the message is what causes the glitch.
Also, it appears that HTC is aware of the issue and is working on a fix: http://htcsource.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=770&Itemid=50
I did the workaround to handcent and I can say that I will not revert back to the stock messenger once a true fix is discovered. Handcent really is a better messenger application from the customizations available through to the delivery. The biggest aspect is finally being able to send picture mail without the error of the file being over 1mb. Handcent also tells me that the file is too big to send, but it asks me if I would like it to resize the picture to the correct size to send...yes! Not only that, but it completely plays well with the HTC messenger widget so you can keep that on a screen for easy access if you want to.
Another thing that I noticed was when I tried to send a contact to another device as a V-card file, it was sent through the default messenger but it did NOT cause an issue with the dialer??? I'm not sure how that happened, but it is great to know that using the default messenger for built in processes will not trigger the dialer issue.
In short, Handcent is the ****. Even after the workaround was discovered I was going to wait out a fix for the default app...don't waste your time like I did.
ps--I didn't go through the trouble of a hard/factory reset. I simply installed handcent after a restart and disabled the HTC messenger. No problems what so ever after 6 hours of testing and I also have had Advanced Task Kiler installed since day one. Just be sure to set handcent as the default app whenever there is a screen that asks you for it.
Awake time 38%
Sorry for the question but how do you set handcent as the default messaging app? I've been using it for a day now and haven't found anyway to make it default. I'm still getting 2 notifications and also still have the battery glitch... Any help would be greatly appretiated.

I am used to using Handcent since I had my G1 but I think it has gotten even better during my time away. To set it as the default go to message app - settings and deselect notifications way at the bottom. Then click the message widget if you use it or a new text or whatever and select always use this option on the popup and select Handcent. Then REBOOT. Works perfect for me I now have an up time of 23 hours and an awake time of 19% and my battery is nearly full after decent use of browser and Navigation, with GPS, bluetooth, wifi, and lots of talking all day.
edit: also DO NOT open the message app and send a text or you will not see a fix, just throw away any shortcuts to the default app on your homescreen and forget that sucker ever existed

I am trying to follow your instructions on setting this as default. I do my settings and my "Notifications" box is already unchecked.
I click on the message widget like you mention and it just brings up my message window. There is never a pop up like you mention so I am not able to set Handcent as default.
Any thoughts?
I don't know if this means anything and/or if this will help, but when I am going to install "Robo Defense FREE" from the market, it says this application has access to the following "System tools, prevent phone from sleeping."

Vibrate when silent for SMS/MMS?

I'm new to the Note 3 and can't seem to figure this out.
I don't need the phone to vibrate when the sound is on for notifications. However, when I set the phone to vibrate I want SMS/MMS to cause the phone to vibrate. I can't figure this out...
If I uncheck "Also vibrate when notified" under SMS/MMS settings, then that stops the vibrations when the phone sound is on. But when I put the phone to Vibrate mode.... messages won't vibrate the phone.
I need "Vibrate when silent" or something to that affect.
Am I missing something here?

I, too, was frustrated by the vibration behavior on this device with regard to notifications.
My suggestion is to try an app called Vybe in the market that solved all my problems.

Everything you should need is Under the sound settings. And then the vibrate settings. Most apps, including messages, and gmail, have a check box to vibrate as a notification. Hope that helps.

Yea I knew that... The problem is if you check that Vibrate box under Message settings.. it will vibrate even when the sound is on, which I don't need. But if I uncheck it, text messages will not vibrate when the phone is set to vibrate. Kind of aggravating... I don't need the phone to vibrate when the ringer is on, but I don't have a choice because if I uncheck that box, messages will not vibrate when the phone is set to vibrate.

I dont use vibrate at all...
However... what you may have to do is go under the Vibration Intensity, and slide those all the way down when you dont need vibrate, and slide them all the way up when you do need them.
That way you can keep your vibrate boxes checked at all time, and thats more of a master control for Vibration.

If the Vibration Intensity was unique for each mode: Ringer On and Vibrate... that would work.. Unfortunately turning it all the way down so it doesn't vibrate with ringer on, even with it checked in message settings, doesn't allow it to vibrate when set to vibrate mode.

You just want it to vibrate when the ringer is off correct? I think its going to take some work on your behalf, meaning you will have to use those sliders when the volume is off, raise the vibration up more. When the volume is on, lower the vibration. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Yea no problem... And yes I just want it to vibrate when the ringer is off. Looks like I'd have to adjust the intensity eveytime I went from vibrate to ringer... Which sucks.
Hopefully Kit Kat fixes that

Nubia Z11 tips and tricks

Hello everyone. We had better to write the tips and trips of our Nubia Z11 phones. You can find some tips in main subject but it is hard to find in all those messages. This headline should be for little tricks and tips for our phone. For example:
How to prevent Cell Broadcast in Nubia Z11:
If you get annoying cell broadcast messages, especially while you are travelling, you can not stop those messages with ordinary ways.
To stop cell broadcast message (hucresel mesaj) install NoBloat Free app from Play Store. That free app can stop nubia apps and broadcast message center. Open app and find com.android.cellbroadcastreceiver service in "System Apps". Select it and "disable". Cell messages will stop after restart.

How to change lock screen gallery pictures:
First, you must select wallpaper type of lock screen in setttings/lockscreen settings/Lock screen style/-> GalleryLockScreen
Lock the screen with power button.
Turn on the screen with power button again and after you see the picture, double tap to screen to see more options. Sellect settings icon down the screen. You can add gallery in this screen. Unfortunately, i guess Nubia is not working with this option because i have only 20 lock screen pictures and it does not load new pictures.
Any idea how to remove the Chinese widget on the left of the default home screen?

Unfortunately, i guess Nubia is not working with this option because i have only 20 lock screen pictures and it does not load new pictures.

After disabling Neosafe with NoBloat, you have to lock whatsapp to get notifications. I disabled neosafe app and i made whatsapp a system app with titanium backup. But after that whatssapp gives notifications about 20 minutes late. When you lock whatsapp, you get notifications immediately. Even after screen is off after 30 minutes.
To lock an app, press and hold main central button, slide down the app you want to lock. You will see a lock icon next to app's name. By this way you always get notifications.
PS: I'm talking about 1.54 rom (1.48 and 1.53 have the same issue). Somehow some phones give notification without any issue.
PS2: Do not forget to enable notifications of an app in Notification Center in Settings menu.
When you fastly tap your screen 5 times, it makes a screen broken animation and sound. Not a feature but interesting. (rom 1.54)
You can long press home key and turn flashlight on in lock screen. So you dont have to unlock your phone to reach flash when needed. To turn this on, enter settings / other / Accessibility / lock screen fast open flashlight (check)

Hi I have a question. How can I change the lockscreen wallpaper ? I have downloaded a new theme over the nubia theme store and the lockscreen picture is ugly as f...ck. Is there any option to change that?
Is it possible to find the picture in root browser and replace it with another picture?
Many thanks
I changed without problem from gallery. I open picture click to settings and set like wallpaper and set like wallpaper lockscreen. You can change from main screen thru long press on display and set too.
Oh man thank you a lot. Thats was my fault... I have freezed the stock Gallery app from nubia with TB. (shame)
So i was not able to have this Option. Lockscreen Wallpaper
Many thanks now it worked. I was also able to find a workaround whithout the Gallery app. But with the Gallery app its quiet simple-
Thank you alot.

You can try for example quickpic app. In this app you can set wallpaper.
Yes wallpapers can be set over quickpic but not the lock screen wallpaper .. This option is only available in the default gallery app I think

Textra Doesn't display all the way to the top?

Hey guys,
I use textra as my standard messaging app. It seems like it gets cut off on the s8's display, not going all the way to the top. It leaves a black space between the top of the app and the notification bar. Not sure if this is a textra issue that needs to get updated or an app viewing setting somewhere in the s8 that I'm missing. Either way it sure would be nice if that dead space went away lol
Anybody know any tricks?
Cheers!
Edit: Apps this happens in I've found so far
Textra
theChive
Various banking apps
I'm thinking it's something with the individual apps not being able to display in a certain aspect ratio? Dunno.
A little extra testing showed that this is independent of launcher used. I didn't think it would have an effect but figured I would give it a shot anyways. I used the google now launcher with no difference.
Try Settings, display, full screen apps. Toggle the individual program to be full screen. Should solve the problem.

Problem solved! No idea why this is an option I need to check. Bought the phone for a full screen, why would i not wanna utilize that full screen? lol
Programs aren't made to this aspect ratio yet. There could be glitches. You choose full screen you deal with the consequences.

Have you noticed when you receive a text message and you click on it from the notification screen it makes you swipe to open still? I have the AT&T version and this annoys me.
Like any notification you tap it and instead of opening the phone it goes to a blurry screen and makes you swipe again.
yeah, I wish apps went all the way by default when you install them, and if they don't work that way, I can go in an turn off. I have to go in and turn them all on at the beginning which is annoying.

I just watched your video closely. So you are talking about opening the textra message from the lock screen by double tapping? yeah, mine makes me unlock the phone too. I have iris scanner and FP setup. so if I double tap the message from the lockscreen, I have to unlock the phone first to see it or reply to it. I think that's pretty standard.
You can setup reply boxes on the lock screen. I haven't played with it much but I think it'll let you reply with a locked phone. Check out the heads up floating notification section under "when locked"

did you not have lockscreen security setup on your pixel? I know on my OnePlus One running 7.1.2, if I don't have any lockscreen security (just set to swipe), I can do what you are trying to do. But I think anytime you setup a pin, pattern, fp, etc., you have to insert in those unlocking methods first.
OR, did you have some kind of smart unlock setup on your Pixel that you haven't on your S8 yet? like proximity (home), connection (bluetooth or wifi), etc?

34.4.A.2.19 Alarm clock issue/bug

Dear all, since my wife's X Compact got updated to 8.0, there seems to be an issue with the Alarm Clock: a notification for delayed alarm appears, it's not removable, clicking it just opens the Alarm tab of the Clock app, and the notification persists. Only thing I found to be working is to force close the clock app via settings.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes?

I have the same issue, with multiple alarms. You can not dismiss it.
I have restarted the phone, and the notification disappeared.

Sony clock app has bug that upcoming alarm notification would disappear when you restart the phone. I've fixed it using a Xposed module.
But I cannot see the issue with multiple alarms. If you can provide more details, such as screenshots, maybe I can fix it too.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/x-compact/themes/mod-sony-clock-fix-t3761376
Ok, so just to be clear, the issue is that after I hit snooz a couple of times, the alarm doesn't go away, it has a dismiss button in the notification list but it's not working.
You can't swipe it, you can't dismiss it and if you click on it it just opens the alarm clock app.
Here are 2 screenshots. One of the notification and one of the code.

I don't have such problems. I have no idea what's going wrong. Maybe you should start waking up without snoozing it several times . I always wake up at the 3rd snooze though!

So, I tried to reproduce the faulty alarm notification but I did not succeed.
In the morning I have the following situation:
- I have 5 consecutive alarms set to: 07:55, 08:05, 08:15, 08:35, 08:40.
- Each of these alarms are repeating on every weekday (from Monday - Firday)
- Each of these alarms are set to: Snooze duration 10 minutes, Side key behavior None, Auto Silent time 5 minutes.
- Alarm type: Sound & Vibration, Alarm sound: default.
The true problem about finding the error is that in the morning i have no idea which alarm do I snooze and which alarm I leave to go to auto silent. But by the time i get up. around 08:45 - 9:00 I have 1. Alarm notification that i can not dismiss.
Because of the snooze and auto silent settings, these alarms somehow conflict each other.
I tired to reproduce the error in the evening, with 5 alarms setup in the same manner but it did not gave me the faulty notification.
But here are the 2 notification. the first one from 9:28 (Alarm snoozed since 08:40) is the faulty one, the one that I can not dismiss.
The second one from 16:32 (alarm snoozed since 15:10) is the normal one, which i could dismiss.
any thoughts?

Ok, so i couldn't reproduce the issue, at a different time, so I recorded my morning routine.
Here You can see it clearly at 04:05 that I have 2 notification for the 08:40 alarm, and when I click on the first one, they both disappear, and afterwards the second one reappears, and I can't dismiss it.

Yes, the same issue, It's a shame that Sony did not came up with a solution already.
There is a work around so that you don't need to restart your phone, but it's not a solution to the problem.
Go to your App settings page and click Clear Catch and Clear Data. Beware, this will delete your alarms, so you have to reset them, but it clears away the notification.
It's look like it is fixed in latest update 47.1.A.12.145

I have sent my Xperia to service with a different issue, but as soon as I get it back I will test this, and confirm it if it's so.
I have an issue where the timer stopped working in my xperia z5 compact clock app. My alarm and time zones are working, but whenever I try going into timer, it keeps telling me clock app stopped working and asks me to re-start the app. When I re-start nothing changes. I tried restarting the phone a few times, still nothing. Since it is inbuilt clock, it does not let me to uninstall it either. I used to use timer option a lot. Any ideas if there's a fix?
