What to do with my Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, recently i bought a second hand Nexus 4, i want to install TWRP on it.
The problem is that when i connect my Nexus 4 to my PC, it doesn´t connect with MTP mode, only charging, i tried activating MTP Mode, usb debugging, changed the cable and connected to other PC, but doesn´t matter.
Any help?
Thanks

Have you installed the correct drivers? There may be a clash of drivers too. Best thing is to use USBDview and uninstall all drivers and then install the correct drivers.
You should have USB Debugging enabled in Developer Options in the Phone. When you initially connect, it will only charge. You should have a notification about it on the phone. Pull it down, choose to change the option and select MTP. Then there will be another notification whether to authorise the PC connection. Select to enable it always. It should now work. If not, there is something seriously wrong.

For the custom ROM I would recommend official lineage 15.1 use open gapps 8.1 pico and is daily driver material been using it as my daily driver for two weeks plus

Can confirm that. Because of it´s good processor, it still is way better, than a cheap beginner phone like Nokia 3 e.g. .
with crappy MediaTek SoCs for which there is no real support, even on XDA.

Does Windows make a connection sound, if you connect it? If so and it´s just not displayed in explorer, that´s a broken driver, had it quite some times as well. If there´re a lot of USB connections to the pc, driver can break down and you have to delete and reinstall.

N4 not showing up at all on PC

I'm not sure when this problem first appeared. For whatever reason, my phone doesn't show up at all when connected to either of my two PCs. It must have when I first rooted the phone (to load ChainSU) but I'm not sure if the problem is recent or occurred immediately thereafter.
USB debugging is disabled. When I plug my phone into a computer, it attempts to install the MTP Driver and fails. When I uninstall my device, it disappears and I'm unable to manually install the driver's I've downloaded from other threads. When I load into the Bootloader, my device is recognized by Fastboot.
I'm hesitant to factory reset as this will leave me unable to root if the problem persists, which is important to me as I can get rid of the yellow tint on this screen.
Any thoughts?
Edit: $10 via Paypal for anyone who successfully helps me to a solution!
Are you definitely sure usb debugging is disabled? The phone should install as a portable device on your pc. Also ensure to enter your password onto your phone when connected otherwise the phone will not show up its contents.
Make sure for windows media player to be updated to the latest, for the windows mtp driver.

There are a few things you can try. Have you tried uninstalling the drivers completely then reinstalling from the toolkit? In the past, I've had issues where the phone wouldn't be accessible in some way on one computer but would be fine on another, so maybe try a different computer to try to narrow down the problem as to whether it's an issue with the phone or the computer? Also, this may sound a bit ridiculous, but simply switching USB cables and / or ports has fixed detection issues for me in the past as well--something to consider.

Remove any existing drivers (while phone is connected), do the same for other android devices if you have any, then reboot and install Universal Naked Drivers. Have always had success with this driver pack.

100% sure on both counts.
I have this same issue with my rooted nexus 4, I've tried 3 different computers and several cables and it never connects to the PC and only charges the phone. It doesn't even give me option to choose media files.
I've had this issue before, my Nexus/Computer was acting in complete stupidity. When connecting the phone to your computer you will see a notification saying "Connected as a media device" on your phone, just touch it, and change it to "Camera (PTP)". It might access the camera for you, but It actually accessed the storage for me.

Thats not the problem, it doesn't give any option. It doesn't show up on the computer at all and only charges. It's the same for every computer.

I'm thinking we've screwed something up with the phone's side of the MTP protocol - mine is totally independent of the cord/computer used. All the correct drivers installed.
Have you tried Factory Resetting? I'm really hoping this is a workable option.
If you have a recovery back up the current Rom and flash stock and see if it's working

I had same problem on my pc yesterday. Even if the drivers installer showed up that installation was successful, somehow for a mtp mode system was using some other Microsoft driver. Correct one was only used in ptp mode. So when I connected n4 in mtp mode storage wasn't available, when I switched to ptp mode everything was fine. Turn on your usb debug, switch on mtp and connect. Go to device manager in system, find your nexus there and rmb on it and manually reinstall driver. After this my n4 is visible in system in mtp mode again.

The problem is that even if I switch between MTP and PTP it still does nothing, I have tried multiple cables, computers and have reflashed the ROM and wiped the device but it still does not connect with the PC. This is frustrating.

Is yours able to connect during Bootloader/Recovery? Fastboot/ADB have no trouble recognizing my device.
It's really odd that if these things work, meaning your USB connection is fine, replacing the all of software fixed nothing... unless MTP occurs at a much lower level of the OS (maybe kernel is corrupted?)
I've got a similar problem that others have posted - PCs not detecting my N4. I got it last Friday (2/1) from Google and after the registering process and updating to 4.2.1, I connected it to my Win7 laptop and it showed on the PC as a drive. But since I couldn't copy/paste Office docs to that drive and had to do that through Dropbox, I didn't bother trying to reconnect until Monday, at which time the PC didn't detect it. Neither will one other Win7 nor two XP (both with WMP10) PCs. Have tried multiple cables, all of which work with other Android devices (pre 3.0). I've seen several suggestions on this and other threads, but one major issue I'm having is that some of the fixes require enabling USB Debugging. For the life of me I can't find that option in the N4's Settings. Unlike my other phones, there is no Applications subcategory under Settings on my N4 (4.2.1, Build JOP40D). Can anyone help me find that option? TIA.
Edit - Found answer. Click on Build in About Phone setting 7 times. That activated Developer options. Now to try the fixes which require USB Debugging mode turned on.

MTP Mode not working

Hey,
So I got my D802 today and I want to do the whole Root, Recovery, ROM shenanigans.
But for the love of god I cant connect the phone in MTP mode, so I cant Root, nor install a recovery.
I cant connect to the LG PC Suite either.
Any Ideas?
what connection type are u choosing after plugging it into the computer? are u running Windows, Mac, Linux? Windows will work with mtp out of the box but I think Mac and Linux need phone drivers installed. Windows will need drivers when you're ready to "unlock" using adb.

when you first plug in your phone it gives you the option to install the drivers needed to connect in the different modes, if not on the top right corner of the menu with charge/mtp/pc software it should have the option to install the drivers

you never said what connection type you're choosing on the phone after plugging it in. there are a few options and change how the phone is seen by Windows. some options won't have it display as an mtp device or as a drive letter in my computer.

Really Weird
I'm having the same issue. I'm running OptimusG3 v1.3, I've never had an issue with it before, I used MTP to transfer files yesterday, worked flawlessy, now it won't. I was trying to map the G2 as a network drive, I installed LGPCSuite, a couple of other software that should be inconsequential, and suddenly my phone says connected as MTP, but my laptop won't recognize or show the device in My Computer. I get installing device drivers prompts, I used the hardware and devices troubleshooter which told me 'LGE Android MTP Device has a driver problem' and LGE Mobile USB Modem has a driver problem. Reinstall device driver -> completed, but still not fixed. I installed LG's universal uSB tool or whatever, no fix. I have no idea wth is up (It's not a USB debugging accidental toggle either). I'll try uninstalling PCSuite. I though it would be more useful

Nexus 4 will not show up on Computer

Nexus 4 when plugged in with 2 different cables (both capable of transferring MTP as tablet transfers files and connects as MTP just fine) don't do anything and just charge the phone . No "connected as a media device" notification. Checked settings and it's on debugging mode as well as MTP mode but still not being recognised and the same applies for PTP. Phone has been factory reset and still does not get recognised by computer. Device Manager doesn't pick up anything either. No ADB, Nexus 4 name in Device Manager. What's the problem and how can i get it to show up on computer as an MTP device? The phone's not rooted and is Android Version 5.0.1 Lollipop.

Had the same issue my USB port on my Nexus 4 was going bad, but it was still charging the phone. I replaced the port and was back in business.

If you want to use MTP, it is supported in TWRP recovery.
Boot into TWRP recovery and you can view and transfer everything in N4 /root via windows explorer on PC.
mine once had MTP work flawlessly until i start to done this and that, now whatever i did only PTP works
boot to TWRP? sadly nothing work ?

If your bootloader is unlocked, you can flash or boot into TWRP recovery, it supports MTP.
If you have any connection problems between PC and TWRP MTP, it is likely driver related.
You will need to look in Device manager on PC while phone is connected.
Download the howto_driver.zip from the "15 seconds ADB Installer thread" and follow the picture tutorial contained in the zip file. This should fix your connectivity issues.
If you are sill having connection issues, You could try and install ADB drivers . It might help the pc detect.
64bit
32bit
Then go back through the picture tutorial in the howto_driver.zip
Best of luck

Tap on the "Charging mode" notification when your USB is connected and you'll get a pop-up that let's you select MTP mode.
Alternatively you can go to Device Manager and look for any error icons (think they're yellow triangles - been a while since I used a PC). Right click and uninstall all the offending ones, the disconnect and reconnect your device via USB.

In a lot of MM roms, you have to go in to developer options and select MTP under 'MTP configuration' in there. Even if it's selected already, tap it again and it should pop up asking what to do when device is connected on the pc. $5 says that does the trick. Easy but surprisingly tough one. One other problem I'm running into lately with the new windows 10 is that it has driver signing enabled by default and often rejects the driver you install or just doesn't use it even if it's installed. So if the driver is the problem (or more accurately windows 10 is refusing to acknowledge the installed driver), you might need to disable driver signing enforcement. Here's a link how to do that: http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how...8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/

6P not recognized by any computer

I have a 6P running on android 8.1 SuperXE rom. And when i tried to run Substratum and it asked me to download the Andromeda app to make it work so I did. Then i went on my Desktop downloaded the script for that followed all the instructions. Now after running the script a couple times my phone no longer works with adb. It is not a computer problem because I have tried to plug it in on multiple computers that have the right drivers installed and none of them work. It seems to be a problem with my phone.
I have tried factory resetting my phone uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Nothing seems to work.
Has anyone ever run into a similar situation?
Also the error that shows up is USB device not recognized, "the last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it." It says this on both my windows computers, and my Linux laptop. So I know it has nothing to do with the phone cord or the computer.

It's probably the chord try another one. And if you root your phone with magisk you won't need Andromeda and Android pay still works. I'm on SuperXe also and don't have any issues. It's pure stock with some add-ons and customization.
Check with another cable or clean flash a stock rom via fastboot to see if the issue still persists, mm,n or o, it doesn't matter.
Edit: first go to Dev options and reenable USB debbuging and set USB configuration to mtp, may a phone reboot is required.
Edit: to reset the USB debugging authorization is worth a try too.

Neither my Nexus 6p nor the 6 show up in usbdeview. Only the Nexus 9. Tried revoking. Have done factory reset set to mtp turned debugging off then on restarted phone different cables still doesn't show up in usbdeview.
Also the point of all this was to try to get this to work with my Mavic Pro drone. Which also does not recognize my 6p and thinking about this now my car also does not auto launch Android auto like it used to and in fact does not work at all. Phone charges from usb but does not seem to communicate.
Faulty phone maybe?
Is there a way to get off Oreo without having usb access? Not currently rooted and the apk's I have tried seem not to work.

It's strange that your n6 and n6p both don't communicate.
If you got TWRP installed you can root and flash what ever you want with flashfire. Or with TWRP itself. But never ever flash bootloader and radio with flashfire, it isn't necessary all the time anyway.
Or is your n6p completely stock ???
Uhh, I do miss my Nexus 6
