Anyone working on a custom recovery for the 7.85" Crystal Sky? - Android Drones General & Development

I have a 7.85 Crystal Sky that is messed up. Meaning, I screwed up by deleting the wrong stuff after rooting. Anyway, it boots but I cant access anything as I keep getting a systemshare and asop error that I cant get past. ADB works. Before sending to DJI I was hoping I could help dev a custom recovery or rom.

Have you tried going into the stock recovery and wiping data? I had to do that yesterday after i messed with some system files causing everything to force crash like crazy.
I did "adb reboot recovery", once in recovery you tap the screen to change the selection and the power button to select. After that it rebooted but wanted to flash back to stock. Downloaded the stock firmware from here: https://www.dji.com/downloads/products/crystalsky.
follow their instructions to flash it.
How to Update the Firmware of CrystalSky
https://www.dji.com/crystalsky
Copyright © 2018 DJI All Rights Reserved.
1. Visit the official DJI website and go to the CrystalSky page, download the latest firmware package.
2. Extract the firmware package, and copy the extracted file (CS785/CS785U: ZS600B_xxx.bin; CS550:
ZS600A_xxx.bin) to a Micro SD card.
3. Insert the Micro SD card into the Micro SD card slot of the CrystalSky.
4. Power on the CrystalSky, enter System Settings > System Update, click Local Update on the top-right
corner. The latest firmware will show on Micro SD card. Click Update to start updating

After flashing it and booting up, you can update to latest version, then would recommend a hard reset after that.

Custom recovery / xposed would be nice
I rooted my crystal sky, I know its possible to use fireflash to install Google play store but I'm also interested to know if xposed / custom recovery / ROM is possible, or if anyone is willing to try.
Thanks

Oh in case anyone ever has the problem of the OP, the way to fix this is right after you root it, make a DD backup of the CrystalSky. If something goes wrong just DD your backup back to the CrystalSky and problem solved. I don't think you can simply flash stock firmware as suggested above when its at the point where OP is.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. I have a number of DJI 7.85" CrystalSky remotes which I would like to get an original image onto. These are a slightly different from normal commercial CS. Does anyone have and willing to share a full back-up to replace the image on a standard 7.85" CrystalSky please?

I just saw this, I didn't get a notification, sorry for slow reply. I have a regular CrystalSky 7.85 with newest firmware, not sure what you mean by slightly different though. Do you want a backup of a regular CrystalSky 7.85 that has newest firmware? It'll have root because backup wasn't taken until right after the rooting step, if you want it unrooted you'll need to do that step yourself.

Little Overwhelmed

I just bought g tablet. I need some help on where to start.
I read below to use Z4 root:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/12/08/how-to-unleash-the-power-of-the-viewsonic-g-tablet-and-turn-it-into-the-best-performing-tablet-on-the-market/
Also read here that I have to set up ADB first then root with SuperOneClick
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
Is it necessary to set up ADB? Can I just use Z4 root?
Android police say next step would be installing ROM like
Cyanogen 6.1, TnT Lite or ZenPad. Which one can be recommended?
I'm not sure what all this means I just want to follow some instructions to get this tablet working better.
Is there a way to back up before I try this so I can go back?
Sorry for all the questions but this is very new to me.
Thanks for any help.
I cannot figure out how to do anything
Start with the FAQ area, in my signature. It has information / links on the alternate ROM's available. They are rooted already and can be installed using the device's own firmware update process.

A little comfort knowing I'm not alone but I want to get it working. I need a tablet this size with flash so I can watch my movie at work
I was the same way with roebeet and a few others u will be savy in no time.
Make sure u get clockeorkmod 1st installed.
Partition ur sdcard and back up frequently. You can't break this thing with those things in hand I promise.
Purchase root explore and titanium backup for the rest.

Watch this video...it shows how to flash the firmware

I assume I need to do root first, right?
Is there instruction somewhere for installing clockworkmod?
How do I partition the sdcard for this operation?
Thanks!
that video helped me greatly, now after doing this is there no return to the manufactures OS? And it is recommended to clear the cache and how is that done?

Yes you can reflash back to the original OS, like if you needed to return it or something. Once you experience something different I promise you wont want to go back

It is not a requirement to partition your card. I have not (at least not yet- unless forced to with a future rom) and have had the G for over a month now and went through all TnT versions.
Currently using TnT 2.20
The problem with the guide linked above (-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245) is that I get stuck at step one. I simply cannot for whatever reason flash Clockwork Mod 0.8
It just gives me the giant EXCLAMATION MARK /!\ and doesn't do anything. I'm following the directions perfectly.
So is this an issue with hardware revisions or something? Because as far as I'm concerned this tablet is busted if the exact thing that works for all of you doesn't work for me.
EDIT: Finally found a different SD Card and it worked. Don't know why. The card that didn't work was a stock 1GB Sandisk, card that worked was a stock 512MB Sandisk. Weird.
You can install Clockwork and flash ROMs without rooting your tablet first. You also do NOT need an additional SDCARD in your device; I did ROMs several times before adding an SDCARD.
Your best bet is most likely TnT Lite, although VEGAn is fast becoming the best ROM available and it's still in beta.

The roms root for you, so no manual root process. Putting CW on has a bunch of advantages.
Clear cache, data and Dalvik cache
Back up entire current rom and restore with it if problems
Fix permissions
Boot into usb storage mode and access internal space, even if device will not boot up.
Break out of boot loops
No complete need for recovery folder
That is some of the main reasons it is prudent to install it. Life line

Having root on the device is akin to having superuser/administrator rights on your home computer. It is necessary to have for the system administrative type applications you may want to use (e.g., TitaniumBackup) to help backup and restore your data / applications.
ok at first i was just like you guys did not know how to flash any ROM, or how the tablet actually did it or the necessary files needed at the required location, first off when you first connect the tablet to your pc gotta choose turn "turn on usb storage" on tablet, than go to "my computer"(where you see all your hard-drives) and open the new storage from the tablet there you will see a bunch of files ".android_secure,.br, android" etc, etc, there also should be a Folder called "Recovery" which contains the actual command that tells the tablet to do an update. inside there should a file labeled "command" and when you open it with "notepad" it should say "update_package=SDCARD:/update.zip" this what is going to tell the tablet to put a new ROM when you do the power up holding the power and the vol. + buttons, once you verified the "recovery command" is there, copy your "update.zip" folder to the same area where you see all those other "android" and "recovery" folders after that, power down, do the power up holding the power and vol. + until you see that it is replacing the ROM
Finally got my gtablet working with TnT lite, Market, Flash After getting confidence in doing this I then root my phone(Droid Increible) and install wireless tether so I can connect my gtablet to my phone. Thanks to XDA and the great members!
I have to say this is a nice upgrade from what it was out of the box, but my issue is spending 4 hundo on something I have to mod myself to make it work, because as it is now I have voided the warranty by doing this. Any other suggestion on tablets that are better than this?
we all feel you there..

getting back to 3.1.....??????? jessica

I gave up looking. I dont know what happen because i rooted my tab and somehow i cant go back. I did factory reset but no luck. I just wanna go to back to 3.1 so i could update my gtab to 3.2. I know its here in this thread but i cant find it (i tried) . If you could just help me out so i could update to 3.2 that would be a help. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!
JESSICA
Hiya, I haven't done this, but will try to help anyway.
Can I ask first, why do you want to go back to the "factory" state? Do you need to return it?
Edit: coz just having root access does not stop you updating to 3.2...
factoy reseting your device will NOT WIPE SYSTEM and thats were superuser is. You need to Odin flash the firmware of you choiche. thats the best and easiest way, its done in 5 minutes. And i think its wise to not update while rooted as some have reported errors during update and some have not. good luck
Why not just flash Galaxy Task 10 Rom? It's 3.2 and much better than the stock 3.2. All you need is Clockwork Mod installed and you can do that with Odin.
I flashed it with Pershoots kernel and it runs VERY stable. You can also flash it with the stock kernel if you don't want overclocking, etc.
I bricked my galaxy tab. I want to go back to 3.1 so i could update it to 3.2. I dont know much aout hacking so I guess i messed up. Im trying to go back to 3.1 so i could update my tab to 3.2 then root it. However, i couldnt find any thread to fix.
thanks for your all reply. If I used 3.2 rom? will it stay 3.2 if I use other roms? thanks in advance
jessica
Well, a custom rom like Galaxy Task 10 is "3.2" and so yes, it will stay 3.2.
I'd recommend Task's rom, it's much better than the stock 3.2.
And no doubt he will update to Android 4 (IceCream Sandwich) so you'll be able to keep up to date.
Your comments about bricking your device are now confusing the situation.
Can you please write what steps you did (or thought you did), and what your device does or does not do right now?
Also, please be vey specific about what device you have, whether it is 3g+wifi or just wifi. Give us the model number from the box if you do not know.
We'll help, we just need details.
Cheers..
i have the 16gb wifi us version. I used odin and
everything went perfect but still cant update to 3.2 using kies. Kies say your tablet doesnt support firmware upgrade. What I did next is i tried to root my tablet
somehow it wont let me root and giving me this "your storage not prepared yet please use ui menu for format and reboot actions"
I downloaded termulator and root checker to see if im rooted however it says im not. So I cant download any roms or upgraded to rom 3.2.
Ive been searching online to how to fix it for almost 6 hours and cant find a solution. pls help!!! THANKS FOR YOUR HELP GUYS AND I REALLY APPRECIATED!

1. Used ODIN to do what? Put in a recovery image? or replace a whole ROM?
2. Is a firmware upgrade available? There isn't for mine, I'm also on a 16g wifi version but no 3.2 FW has been released for my specific model yet...
3. How? By flashing a zip in recovery? Can you post the link to the information you used to do this?
4. These may give false negatives. Check in your apps list to see if you have "SuperUser". If so, run it, it will show you apps that have tried to ask for root access. They may have been asking but you didn't receive the prompt, and have therefore been denied root access. If so, grant them root and try to run them again.
5. Just FYI, you don't need root access to download/install a ROM, you need a "recovery".
Honestly, I think the best thing for you to do (besides answer these questions ) is to download the ROM Galaxy Task 10, boot into recovery, and flash it. That is assuming you do have a recovery image in place, which depends on the answer to #1 above.
i tried everything. it wont let me root the device. Tab keep saying your storage not prepared yet please use ui menu for format and reboot actions. So i cant use any or replace rom. I upgraded my tab to 3.2 before but kies keep saying its not upgradeable. Any suggestions? thanks!
jessica
Sorry, I need specific information to those questions from my previous post. As stated, replacing a rom doesn't need root, it needs a recovery image.
Maybe some screenshots of your tab and/or computer would help? Or photos, if you can't take screenshots?
Sorry, if you won't answer my questions I'm not going to be able to help.

Back to Stock,
Here's what I did to get back to stock.
You must choose the files under the GTAB GT7510 /retail/google edition
First you have to install Clock Work Recovery using this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171089
Download the files under FilesForDummies 2 mirrors are listed. These files will help you flash Clockworkrecovery and also the retail recovery is included.
This step needs to be flashed through Odin. You also need to root your device after the flash if your not already rooted. You need the Clock Work Recovery to enter recovery mode so you can flash the Stock Files that I'll point you later.
Once you've flashed the Clockwork recovery you should reboot normally. At this point try to root your device if its not already rooted. Look for OneClickRoot I'll point to that later if you don't already have it.
Not too sure if you need to be rooted as I've always rooted my device before installing roms anyways, but you can try the next steps if your not rooted. If the next steps don't work then reboot and root the device.
Start with your tablet off.
1. Push Powerbutton as soon as you see it startup put your finger on the volume down button and press until you see the android. One side is a box saying recovery the other download. Choose download mode by pushing volume down to choose and up to enter you will be prompted at this time just take if from there. Make sure Odin is up and running, choose the PDA file as Clockwork cm4.04 its that file in the zip you just downloaded and extracted.
2. Flash Clockwork file Clockwork CM4.04 etc... using ODIN should be included in the zipped file you've downloaded. Make sure these files are unzipped in the same folder. Now after flashing the tablet should reboot and it would look normally like it did before except you have clockworkrecovery instead of the stock one.
3. Go back to the link I sent you above and scrool down until you see flashing roms and kernals heading. Click on Stock US Retail Rom, this will download the Stock US Retail 3.1 file for Clockwork. choose : hc-3.1_ota-full_sam file, and then also click on the recovery hc3.1 file.
Put these files in the same folder or somewhere where you can find them. Not sure if these are already in the file you downloaded above, if they are then don't have to download these.
4. Unzip the files and make sure you remember where they are.
5. With your tablet on and plug into your usb port transfer the hc-3.1 ota file you've just downloaded and put it into the root directory of your tablet. It should not be in any folders just in the /SD folder.
5. Now turn off the tablet, once off push power button again and enter recovery this time choosing the left android with the box. Push left button to choose and right volume button to enter. Now you should be in clockwork recover orange writing. Now look for update from Sd card, use volume button left to choose and right to enter. Click then you should see the file you've copied on your sd card of your tablet. Click down and then use left volume button to choose.
6. Once there it should start flashing the Stock Rom, once done it will return you to where you started, at this point you can choose to wipe data/ cache etc. You can do that to make sure you've clear everything in your tablet before you actually reboot. Once done choose reboot and your tablet should be back to stock but not just yet.
7. You could leave Clockwork on there or you can go directly back to stock by doing the same steps from 1 and 2 and flash the STock Recovery instead. This will bring the tablet right back to HC3.1 and Retail Stock. From this point on you can flash up to 3.2 etc.
Hope this helps but I can't go into it in any length as I'm hoping you know most of the terminolgy.
There is also videos on this link to help you.
nice
I suspect that if we see screenshots, that the wrong recovery has been flashed right from the start.

Oh that would be awesome! Are you rooted? Let me find the commands in the meantime, I read somewhere it's a simple one command in terminal to extract the recovery partition into a file on sd card...
WHAT AN ORDEAL !!!!
But in the end: SUCCESS!
I managed to get my tab updated with the Verizon OTA update.
The problem is definitely CWM !!! A rude awakening is in store for everyone with the P6800 CWM installed, because it a) fails to verify the checksum of OTA files correctly on the i815, b) it thinks the tablet is a P6800, so the OTA file fails to run if it assert checks for "SCH-i815" hardware AND lastly c) modem updates don't work because the device /dev/cdma_update doesn't exist, so the modem.bin firmware_update call fails !!!
In short, I had to fumble the OTA file apart and do the update manually in two runs:
First file, kick the checksum, hardware check and modem update out, then manually run the ZIP through CWM. The zip subsequently (LUCKILY) updated the stock recovery and overwrote CWM with a new fresh stock recovery.
Second file had everything kicked out BUT the modem udpate and LTE patch, so with the STOCK recovery this file ran through just fine, updated the modem and then applied the LTE delta patch.
Phew!!!
Of course I had to manually restore root after the update, had backed up with voodoo, auto restore failed, so terminal and hacking it was...
Now I have the tab running on clean stock FD01, baseband and LTE FD01, rooted and stock recovery.
No more CWM, no more "hacking" with the ROM until some dev finally releases a "correct" CWM and at least ANY factory ODIN image is available to bring the tab back to stock if needed!!!
Kinda sick of the non-support for this tab. So much going on for the Galaxy Note and pretty much every other device. I'm starting to regret having bought this "special" Verizon version
Awesome find and great to know for whenever ics does come out. Could you please post the recovery img you got?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
OK after getting so many responses I decided to just post everything here in hopes that it will help others, too:
All files are here:
http://www.mywo.org:88/XDA/sch-i815/index.php
Step by step procedure to update the Verizon Tab from ..FA02 to ..FD01 build IF YOU ARE stuck with CWM installed on your tab and the original OTA fails with errors:
Upload the SCH-I815_FA02c_To_FD01.1.zip to the INTERNAL(!) SD card. This is important because CWM contains a bug that will only allow you to install from ZIPs stored on the INTERNAL SD storage.
Upload the SCH-I815_FA02c_To_FD01.2.zip to the EXTERNAL(!) (micro SD) card. This is important, because after the factory recovery is restored, it will correctly (and only) look for ZIPs on the EXTERNAL card.
Best way just copy both files to both locations
Fire up CWM and do "install from ZIP" and select SCH-I815_FA02c_To_FD01.1.zip
It should run (takes a while) and eventually tell you all is done. BOOT the tab. It should boot fine but in system it will show the new Android build FD01 but the baseband (radio) will still be the "old" one.
Now press and hold power and vol up again until you see the default Samsung recovery menu. Choose install from ZIP and select SCH-I815_FA02c_To_FD01.2.zip. This will now upgrade the baseband only. When done, reboot and enjoy being back on the "factory upgrade path" with the tab.
I hope someone more savvy than me can "fix" CWM to work properly with VZW tabs (accept the checksum, not fail the check for "SCH-i815" and provide the correct /dev file links for radio upgrades). Until then, I recommend just leaving the tab as-is and not tinkering with the ROM. Not that there is any custom ROM available anyway :-(
I also pulled the NEW factory recovery image FD01_recovery.img with the following command:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 of=/sdcard/FD01_recovery.img bs=4096
So in case anyone with a botched recovery wants to restore factory (Samsung 3e) recovery. This was actually the reason I had to go through all this... There is NO factory recovery image ANYWHERE to be found. I can't believe that I should be the first one ever to post one?? Anyway, hope it will help
I'm still quite new here, so I do really appreciate every click on that "thanks" button
P.S. for tinkerers and devs I also uploaded the original, untouched OTA file (0559c0e4e08e.update_SCH-I815_FA02c_To_FD01.bin) as it came from Samsung or Verizon or whatever and ended up in the /cache partition.
THANK YOU!
Electron,
You sir, are a BOSS! Thank you so very much for doing the work, and sharing it. You just made things one hell of a lot easier on me, and anyone else that follows.
Regards,
-Rob
Also want to say thanks. You rock, dude. I wouldn't have known how to revert **** on my own.
Also, I feel like we need a sticky or something for sch-i815 owners to go to for device specific stuffs, especially since there is little knowledge/info out for this device.

You're in luck! You don't need to go through the whole ordeal because you do NOT have CWM! You can just update the regular intended way. Go into settings, about phone and then click check for system updates. If it presents you the OTA update, just do it the regular way.
My complicated "hack" is only necessary if you DO HAVE CWM installed.
Im sorry I did not explain well what my issue is.
I do not have CWM installed, however i did delete a few appilcations using titanium backup. This causes updates to not take. I would really like to just take it back to factory and start over (this time with less stupidity on my part)
I of course would assume that once its at factory i can then install updates again.
Right now when i try i get the "!" droid sign and a reboot

Hey
OK unless someone can tell us how to "make" an ODIN flashable ROM for you, here is what I would do (and please don't get scared because it sounds a bit convoluted).
First, you need to be rooted. This is obviously the case.
IMPORTANT since you don't have CWM installed yet, SAVE your factory restore.img before proceeding, this saves you a lot of hassle later!
Open the android terminal, type su (accept the prompt) and then type (or copy/paste)
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 of=/mnt/sdcard/factory_recovery.img bs=4096
Check that you have a "factory_recovery.img" file on your sd card now it should be about 8M big.
Now you're safe to install CWM from the forum, look for the other thread(s) where this is being discussed and follow the instructions for the P6800 "international" version with 3G. CWM Thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613638&highlight=cwm&page=3
Then (thanks to nicduim!) there is a full factory (rooted) CWM image floating around on the forums here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613638&page=6
Which I used to restore my tab to "almost factory" with the missing bloat apps back in place.
I have a copy on my server here: http://ww.mywo.org:88/XDA/sch-i815/ it's the "2012-05-06.22.48.58.ZIP"
unzip that and put the contents on your INTERNAL SD card in the folder clockwordmod. So on your internal SD you should have /clockworkmod/2012-05-06.22.48.58 and inside there the files boot.img, recovery.img etc.
Use CWM recovery to restore this backup. If you never used CWM before. Press power button and volume up and hold both until you see the menu screen with text. You can go up/down with the volume buttons (go slow, it's very laggy) and with the power button you "select" an option. Select the "restore from backup" option and point it to the only folder being offered, the 2012-05-06.22.48.58.
The restore takes a while, then reboot the tab. Now you're back to stock! Last thing you need to do is get rid of CWM again because in the end it's still a bit buggy and will prevent the OTA update from running properly.
Since you luckily have a backup of the factory recovery in form of that factory_recovery.img file, just install and open terminal again, type su and then type (or copy)
dd if=/mnt/sdcard/factory_recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 bs=4096
This overwrites CWM with your original Samsung Android recovery.
Now you just reboot as usual, connect to the internet and wait until the popup message shows up that a system update is ready, accept it and enjoy
If you don't want to wait for the automatic OTA, you can also stop before killing CWM and use my convoluted 2-step manual update which will get you to the exact same condition as the official OTA.
Hope all this makes sense
I was already on stock FD01 when I tried installing CWM for the P6800 that's floating around here somewhere. Odin said it was a success, but it looks like it didn't take. I've done it a few times, but still ended up w/ the stock recovery. However, after reading through your thread, I do not see a /dev/cdma_update in my I815 either. Is it possible that my attempt to install CWM (although unsuccessful) wiped out this file, among others?
Right now, I'm still at stock FD01 (rooted) and everything seems to be working. When I tried doing an OTA update, it just tells me that I have the latest update and no newer update is available.
One other thing, if I have to, I only have the stock recovery right now since CWM didn't take, can I simply flash both zip's using the Samsung stock recovery to put everything back in stock?

Oh wait, so you are saying that in "About device" your Android is 3.2
Baseband i815.04 V.FD01 I815FD01
and your Build number is already at HTJ85B.I815FD01.SCH-I815.I815FD01 ?
That would mean you are already updated. In this case, it should be pretty easy to fix your problem. Which apps did you delete with Titanium? I can back them up from my system and make them available for you. All you'd need to do is drop the backup files into your Titanium backups folder and then fire up titanium and restore them!
The /dev/cdma_update node is only required WITHIN CWM recovery, so that is nothing for you to worry about. The zip files above won't help you because they are incremental updates requiring your system to be at FA02, not FD01 !
Yes... I'm already in the latest update. I already backed up the bloatware using Titanium Backup before uninstalling. So I just need to restore them back in order to receive and apply OTA updates in the future?

Hi. I'm rooted and removed all sorts of bloatware with Titanium. I did this a long time ago and did not back anything up because I'm used to running hardware with custom ROMs available, and not relying on OTA updates.
Since there aren't any custom ROMs for the i815, I'd like to get ready for the upcoming ICS update. To do so, I want to get FD01 loaded onto my device, but I can't update because I've apparently removed too much of the required bloatware.
Does anyone know WHAT pieces of bloatware I'd need to reinstall in order for the OTA update to apply? I'd assume I can restore them and then apply the update and re-root.
If anyone can help pinpoint what missing APKs might help, I'll give them a shot. And, to the extent I figure anything out, I'll repost here in the hopes that it helps someone else.
electron,
Your instructions worked ... thank you so much
@jkrell... the failed attempt at installing the update should return an error message(s). You just have to read through them until you find the culprit(s). Apparently I uninstalled a few odexed files that were needed. I couldn't update until i hunted them down and restored them.
I guess we all jumped at the opportunity to install the cwm recovery image, that we didn't even think about cmda updates....ooops. So far i had to do a complete factory restore after the update. I was getting soft bricked to the point where I had no choice. Good thing I sent all titanium backups to actual sd card, i was able to salvage 97% f my data..... with the exception of a few downloads i forgot to move.
Gamecih doesn't work anymore (either version). No more automative data hacks I'm not sure what's going on. I uninstalled adfree..used titanium backup to uninstall both versions and reinstalled both several times. Oh well.
It really sucks not having nandroid backups but it's not worth the trouble of having to do this everytime an OTA modem update gets pushed to my tab. Needless to say, I won't be odining the cwm based recovery image again.
I'm with the O.P. I wish i hadn't wasted my money on this tab. No true cwm for this tab, so no dev will ever waste thier time with this tab. The sch i815 will soon be forgotten about and some other tablet will be all the hype before summer ends....that's just how it is. 21 months left on my contract.... [email protected]#k my life. Lol
Thanks Smitty.
When I try to update, I just see the "!" logo and then the device reboots. Is there a log file somewhere I can look at to see what the errors are?
I hear ya on the gloom and doom, but this device has only been out for just over 3 months now. I'd expect a recovery and some custom ROMs to come eventually. I doubt I'll go the custom ROM route unless CyanogenMod is supported, because I have no complaints about the tablet's performance thus far. It's speedy, smooth and the battery lasts forever.
In my book, this is a great tablet and I'm satisfied with the purchase.

J500FN rapidly running out of space

As a bog standard user I naively assumed that I could put apps on my SD card as and when I wanted. Instead the majority refuse to be put there or cause problems.
If I root my Samsung J500fn (Marshmallow) will I be able to chose the location for putting apps? Can I get rid totally of the stuff Google/Samsung think I need but I never use? Can I make better use of my SD card that is practically empty? Are there any drawbacks to keeping Marshmallow as installed or would rooting overwrite it? Is there a better way than to root? Is "One Click root" safe to use? Am I better of using various programs like Odin, TWRP etc. mentioned in various threads here?
Thanks to any and all who can answer my questions. :fingers-crossed:

Hi Anne,
We all have the same trouble with storage on our J5.
If you chose to root your phone then yes you will be able to uninstall alot of the bloat ware that is on your phone.
You will also have the option of using adaptable storage.
There are lots of threads on here that will guide you through the process. Just make sure that you read the guides properly and download and install the CORRECT zips.
I don't know if the one click root is safe to use.
I would advice installing TWRP and then flashing super su. Again all of the guides are on here.
If you do install TWRP via Odin then you will have the option of flashing custom ROMs..
Have a good look at the guides. Ask all the questions that you need to. People in here will be happy to help.
It's really nice to see you on here
Have fun
John
Don't need root for adoptable storage.

Hi again, thanks for asking.
I downloaded TWRP from https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=55922, version for SM-J500FN dated May 6, 2016. Also ODIN-v3.10.7 and SU SR4-SuperSU-v2.78-SR4-20161115184928 as well as the Samsung USB drivers. All check sums were fine. Odin 3 installed fine on my PC. I used Odin 3 to install the TWRP on my phone. However, when I try to go into Volume up - home - power on - I get a screen that does not resemble at all what I thought TWRP should look like.
I get the yellow/green Android thingy which says "installing system update" follows by "no command" followed by a screen which says:
Android Recovery
MMB29M.J500FNXXU1BPH1
samsung/j5nltexx/j5nlte
6.0.1/MMB29M/J500FNXXU1BPH1
user/release-keys
Use volume up/down and power. (all in yellow)
Followed by a menu which includes "apply update from SD card" but which doesn't install the SU zip file that I put in the download section of the SD card.
--------
So I am a bit lost and bewildered. Is the menu correct for TWRP? I haven't seen anything on the web or in YouTube that looks at all like what I'm getting. Did TWRP install properly - Odin 3 seemed to think so, but I'm beginning to wonder.
Any help, comment appreciated.

Hi john,
Following your suggestion I downloaded the TWRP version http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j5/development/recovery-samsung-galaxy-j500f-t3416960 by searching for Garnesh Varma. It successfully installed, but the problem remains the same. I do not get the TWRP recovery page just the same as before.
I shall continue to look to see if I can find another version from Garnesh, although it seemed correct ie SM-J500FN Android version 6.0.1 Build number MMB29M.J500FNXXU1BPH1, security patch level 1 August 2016.
Will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again,

Ahah! The trick was to turn off the phone and not to permit ODIN to do a reboot. I didn't know how to turn off so I pulled the battery. Then went into volume up - home - power on and got the correct menu. Whew. Rooted now according to root checker. Now to get some of the stuff off the phone and make some space.#
Thanks for your help,

Hello Anne!
Once you are rooted you can remove any Google/Samsung app. But removing some system apps can lead to bootloop. You can recover from bootloop by re-flashing stock rom.
I can make a flashable zip which removes unnecessary system apps, including the Google/Samsung apps which you want (you flash the zip in recovery and you're done). So let me know which Google/Samsung apps you wanna remove.
You can find some more basic informations in our Q&A thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j5/how-to/galaxy-j5-qa-thread-galaxy-j5-series-t3382922 .
I recommend you to try cm 12.1 (5.1.1 lollipop) by Nick Verse if you don't care about Samsung Camera, Memo and Browser. I use Open Camera, Color Note and Dolphin Browser (has sound/brightness sliders in videos) as alternatives. Unlike Touchwiz, CM 12.1 is faster than Touchwiz and has more free ram. But latest release has a bug (random reboot reported by users) which can be fixed manually. I'm running latest release without any problem.
Have a nice day!

Don't know if I should start another thread but...
I used Aps2SD to create a second partition on my phone after making a backup of the SD card using that program. Restored the SD card and then I linked various apps to the new partition. When everything was done, and working, I used the option "Broken ap cleaner" just in case there were any residue files with "select all"
My error may have been to do a hard shutdown afterwards because now I get "Android System There's an internal problem with your device, and it may be unstable until you factory data reset." Then several aps, including a Google app, Photos, CM security and Gmail stop, in fact all those that run automatically at startup. Gmail and Google are on the internal drive now but were previously linked; CM is on the external partition still. The first thing after that I noticed after the hard shut down was that the icons for linked aps had disappeared and the aps keep stopping if I try to run them.
I read the Aps2SD FAQ and followed the two suggestions regard SU, ie "enable su at boot" and disabled "namespace separation" option.
Any suggestions? Should I
(a) do a "factory data reset"
(b) wipe the SD card and partition and completely reinstall the aps I want? Although if Google app is not working don't know if it can be reinstalled as I'm not sure which oneis meant.
(c) Bite the bullet and install a custom rom?
(d) something else?
Any help as usual very much appreciated,
Anne

It sounds like the app has been corrupted, don't really know how to best advice you.
It sounds like you have to do s factory reset.
I would install a custom ROM.
The only trouble with this is that all the roms have just been shut down so you will have trouble downloading any.
Why model do you have ?
If you want to use a custom ROM pm me and I will send you a link.
The custom roms are much better (in my opinion )

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the offer. So far I have not deleted anything but have used software to partition my SD card and to move stuff out of internal memory onto it - or rather link it. I managed to mess up a bit but seem to have recovered - or at least got a phone with items I want to use. Next week when I've more time I'm hoping to install a Custom ROM. In the meantime I've spent what little time available trying to read as much as I can so that when I do put a Custom ROM on, it goes right first time.
Best wishes,
Anne

Hi Anne!
Note that once you flash TWRP, Knox will become 0x1 (initially is 0x0) which means that you void the warranty. In my opinion, I don't care about the warranty because I prefer to have a better experience with my phone. I cannot live without root after I rooted a phone for first time
Regarding the ROM, if you wanna try cm12.1 (which I recommend it, best ROM which is closest to AOSP and never lagged) I'll recommend you to wait some more time because I'll download CM 12.1 sources and build a new update with the help of Nick Verse . He doesn't have enough space on his PC to have both cm12 & cm13 sources. I'm currently trying to extend my Linux partition to have enough space to build though. Is needed about 80gb in total average and I have about 20 and can't resize my partition. I might try to reinstall Linux.
If you have any other question, feel free to ask here (new thread if it's related to something else) or PM me.
Have a nice day!

Having a similar issue, i have got my phone so it boots to TWRP 3.1.1-0 but cannot find a ROM file that will install, they all seem to be for j5nlte, even if the file name states j5nltexx. I have tried to ammend/remove the assert lines in the install package to no avail...
any advice would be good
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the note, but either there is an issue with the update or the file got corrupted on the download. I flashed it and emui went through the update process, rebooted and then said my SD card was corrupt and to format it.
I have a 128GB card full of music TBU and saved ROMs that I did not want to lose. Went back via TWRP to previous and no damaged SD card and all is well.
Might have been the file was corrupted but just be caareful and always backup before you make any changes.

Hi, is there a full firmware package for this new version? Tried to upgrade and got soft-bricked and I don't know if it's safe to flash the full B331 package.

Flashed the full B331, booted and applied the B351 update by powering off and pressing Vol+ & Vol -. After booting it still says B331 and my WiFi is dead.

So did anyone ever take a wack at this? I've done a lot of googling and haven't been able to find anything official off the support site about this update so I was wondering if it was legit or not? I know how the update zip suppose to work and how to make it work. Just wondering if anyone used this.

What he said.
I'm hoping it's nothing more than a VoLTE update that LOS maintainers warn against anyway, if there's actually no one to further explain what it is
received this B351 update over B331, also did factory reset, GUI lag seems gone, not noticing new feature
my kiwi-L24 got re-flashed today, it is weird that this B351 update is no longer available from B331's update check
searched on internet, there is news about "honor 5c" getting a B351 nougat update
This came up on one of the 5X's that I have. Updated and forgot to put back stock recovery. Don't be like me and forget to do that. Now it won't work properly and I can't get to start any apps to try and fix it. I can put back TWRP and wipe it, but I don't want to lose my data. I also have that problem now where it keeps telling that the SD card is corrupted. I backed up the data and scrubbed the card in the phone but it keeps coming back with the same thing.
If someone did an actual successful update properly (with stock recovery) then please update and say if everything is working. If not, I'm going to have to find some way to backup the data and then scrub it.
*EDIT*
I believe something like this happened to me before. I was on B151 and went to B331 with TWRP installed by accident. What happened was that the OS was still running EMUI 3.1 but the build was saying B331. After fighting with it (and community support) I managed to get it to B331 fully and EMUI 4.0 - since then and a few custom ROMs I'm back on B151 EMUI 3.1 due to stability. Games and some apps just didn't work on the new one. The second phone was on B331 fully though - then I made the same mistake and it went to B351. This time though, the phone seems screwed. No apps will load. I can get into settings and the file manager, but no Titanium Backup and no Flashify. Going to put back TWRP and try to flash GAPPS and see if it will help me get into Play Store. From there I'll try to reinstall Flashify and flash the ZIP of the update. Will post back once done.
*EDIT*
Well that didn't work. Even after going back and trying to root the device again - then checking the option for it to not detect the dirty flash - still didn't work. Kept complaining that stock apps are already present.
I'm going to try and get some files off the device, but keep having issues. Not sure why. May just have to scrub. Will update again.
*EDIT*
With TWRP on I used "ADB PULL" to get certain files from the root system which I couldn't access otherwise for some reason. Then copied the other things (photos and such) and will now be using the UPDATE.APP to get it working. For this I formatted the SD from within TWRP and created the DLOAD folder (with no caps - so that's dload - but I'm not sure if it matters) and will be copying the UPDATE.APP. Not sure which version yet, because there was some problem with one I had downloaded before. So I need to double-check and re-download.
*EDIT*
So I've successfully flashed the UPDATE.APP from the SD card (same one the phone was claiming is corrupted). Just for reference, here is the file information and hashes.

The file name may be different, but as long as you got the right one you should be OK. If you have issues when copied to an SD card - verify that the file on the SD card has the correct hashes. To make it faster use CRC32. For more surety, use MD5. You can get a tool like WinMD5 to check. It's free.
So now that it's done, I'm going to set it up as a new phone and wait to see if the update comes back on. If it does, I'll get it down and upload the B351 recovery. After that I'll need to remember that I have to put back the stock recovery before running any updates. Flashify FTW.
BTW - during the initial setup after connecting to wireless it came back with the update. Pics to follow.

*EDIT*
So the files are uploading to the folder. The screenshot is attached. Had one issue where after the update I couldn't get back into the phone. Had to wipe/factory reset. I've used FASTBOOT BOOT TWRP.IMG to take the backups of the BOOT and RECOVERY. Hopefully one of the gurus can use that and give the IMG files. I'm going to try root and get FLASHIFY to backup the stock recovery and add to the folder.

I don't really like to do double replies, but I guess for ease of finding the info it's better this way. Unless a mod thinks differently and wants to merge all the info.

This contains TWRP backups of the recovery and boot images. There's also a file called KIW-L24-B351 which was created with Flashify. I assume you can add the IMG extension to it and flash as needed.
Basically I had this update run on another phone (my wife's) and it messed with the phone due to the recovery being TWRP and not stock. My fault - forgot to do that before handing the phone back to her. I believe it happened to me before but it never messed up the phone this way. Nothing would work except core apps like settings and the stock file manager. The Play Store wouldn't even open.
Anyways - back to factory with UPDATE.APP then run the automatic update from an OTA update on wireless, then FASTBOOT BOOT TWRP.IMG and capture the backups. Then flash SuperSU to get root. Then Flashify. Files are uploaded for your convenience.
Warning that during the initial OTA it took a while. And after it was done I couldn't get into the phone with the password. Had to factory wipe/reset again and setup again. Disable passwords just in case I guess. Hope this helps others - have fun.
No major differences. I haven't really used the stock OS6 but some things look a little different. Nothing major. Will see when she's using it if it lags or has improved memory and such. Not sure if I'll be able to test with apps that wouldn't run previously for me, but will see. Tested with TransDrone and it failed. Once SeedBox information is loaded it still crashes. Only happens on OS6 so I'm sticking with OS5 on mine. Does not happen with custom roms however (from what I recall - would have to check back).

Follow this video if don't know how to flash back stock recovery through adb. Then take a look at those threads how to downgrade, here, here, here. Hope it helps.

Same here.
It had been too many months of the Honor 5X in the closet so i almost lost track what to do but what i did was revert all the way back to Stock ROM (had to flash an extracted/saved Recovery.IMG) and then do the UPDATE.APP from Dload complete and repeat on up to the current B351.
Of course lost Root but when ready can add that back too.
Yes the Honor 5X runs much smoother now than before plus that Battery Drain issue (Remember That?) where we had to dig deep to change 4 to 0 i think, well Battery Life is also greatly improved on mine.

So did anyone ever take a wack at this? I've done a lot of googling and haven't been able to find anything official off the support site about this update so I was wondering if it was legit or not? I know how the update zip suppose to work and how to make it work. Just wondering if anyone used this.

I tried to update as the previous user did using TWRP and got the corrupted SD card message. I then tried to go back to stock ROM. Went into bootloop.
Been having a hell of a time getting anything to work properly since.
