Sprint S10+ Unable to send MMS over wifi... Uses data - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

On my S8+ I noticed this was the case too around November or so, and I am still seeing it on my S10+ too. Used to be able to send MMS (with mobile data completely turned OFF) over wifi, but now it needs mobile data. Anyone else? Whether on Sprint or TMo

By definition, MMS needs mobile data. It shouldn't be possible to send any MMS on any phone with mobile data enabled. If it worked before, the phone probably automatically enabled the connection just to send the message

Usually to get around the issue, you have to send one MMS via mobile data, then after that it should work. If I remember correctly. Something to do with verification for the initial send.

I can't speak to TMobile or Sprint, but I have MMS working over WiFi on Verizon prepaid. I know it isn't using data because I have 0 bars at my house. MMS over WiFi did not, however, work for me on Cricket. Do you have WiFi calling enabled? If not, I think I needed to do that first (this requires a data connection to initiate). Good luck!

I have an unlocked S10 on Consumer Cellular with an AT&T sim and I've noticed that I can completely disable data and send MMS also. I knew I had working wifi calling but never tried MMS until this post.

Been on Sprint since 2008. MMS uses data, never been able to use it with WiFi......

I just switched over from an s9 to the s10 on Sprint. Was able to receive mms while talking on the phone as long as I had WiFi. I'm not sure why some people don't believe this works. Now I am trying to figure out how to make it work again.

I am tmobile I notice MMS and text will send on wifi if I have bars of service if I am in dead zone and no service wifi only will not send.

Yep, THIS is exactly what I'm talking about. If you have no service/no mobile data, MMS will not send. It used to back on my S8+, but then recently also stopped on my S8+ and continued to not work on the S10+.

You might have a point i always had service up until getting moved to a new spot at work in December. I know it does not matter if there is data or not. It matters service. Good luck and I hope for my sake too u find a fix lol.

Wifi calling

Anyone try out wifi calling/messaging yet? I just sent an mms and the "G" appeared even though the cell signal is off and it's supposed to be through wifi. It took longer than when I'm on 3G too...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
i think the mms goes through a diff system when get home ill try it
I believe MMS always goes through cellular data.
This is to prevent an exploit of sending free messages over Wi-fi

Something came up for crackberry users that stopped them from using UMA and since WIFI calling hits the same servers as UMA, i.e... they are the same thing, I suspect that your issue might be the same as what they were having. Your ISP's DNS is blocking the service. If you can change your DNS settings to OpenDNS.com and give it another try. This may not fix your issue, but I know it did for a whole lot of crackberry users.

I get the same error message. Just got off the phone with a tmo rep and she said that there's a signal outage(?) around Atlanta and that's why I can't get ANY cellular connection whatsoever. But I remain skeptical, as my friends on TMO are having no problems and the "outage" just so happened to affect me right after the OTA was installed. My fingers are crossed that everything gets fixed though.
Mines works fine, it depends on what kind of network your on. On my campus it would not work, but when I got to my gf apt it worked perfectly. So check the wifi settings that you haveto make sure there isn't a firewall or something else set up.

Mine works on my college campus great. I have terrible coverage here. This may be a stupid question but, it only uses minutes when I'm actually calling someone right? Not however long it is enabled? I'm only asking because I'm tired of getting screwed over in ways that I logically shouldn't be.
Yea it only uses minutes when you are calling. Also I don't know what college you go but I go to umiami, so our networks are really strict with regard to using them for gaming or any kind of tethering. So I'm guessing they haven't allowed us access to do that here. But on any other networks like a home network it works perfect.

Crap. I just sorted out my issues with things draining the battery and now Wifi calling is running rampant. It stays running in the foreground even when it is turned off and logcat shows that it is constantly active even when the phone is asleep. Is anyone else seeing anything like this?
well i would like to know why its wifi calling if tmobile still use the mins from your plan thats like stealling it helps tmo they use less data but still charge us for it
Yea genius on their part...even still its not like they're not doing anything. It its still being runs through their network just not through their towers.

yea, what he said. Cellular towers are like a gateway to the Tmobile internet. The still pay for all the fiber and backhaul that gets your calls and data where ever it is that you want them to go.
i just updated and i opened up wifi calling and configured it. i dont understand how its wifi calling when it still uses our minutes? whats the point of having it then? what benefit is there to having this app?
Yea we can but we are literally forced to just web browse lol

T-mobile has had the "charging for minutes via wifi" policy now for YEARS going back to the first Blackberrys that supported UMA. Minutes were deducted unless a customer paid for the @home service per month. You can complain all you want, but if you consider the other carriers and their options---T-Mobile does NOT charge for HSPA+ (4G) access while other carriers do, and some charge even if there isn't 4G in that city just based on the phone! Wifi calling can also prevent you from incurring roaming charges by allowing you to make calls from almost anywhere you can get wifi access a feature that other providers just don't have. T-Mobile gives more minutes for less money, offers more data download than other carriers, and offers some truly awesome features that others just can't compare to.
Although WiFi calling uses up our plans minutes, if we have unlimted weekend minutes, use it on the weekends, is it free or does it take away from the anytime minutes?

Maybe an MMS Fix

How many people have there data network turned off via power menu because they dont have a data plan for the vibrant?
If you turned them off then i dont think you will be able to send a picture message(mms).
Ive had this problem and i just found out today that if you turn this on you will be able to send picture messages.
This might only apply to a small amount of people.
So all you have to do is turn on your data network via power menu and you might possibly send mms.( If you have this problem)
I guess for some reason you need data network to be on to be able to send mms?
EDIT: This might work with other phones too. Worked on the HD2 for tmobile.
It's not a fix...you can't send mms on wifi.
edit: you can send and be charged for data.

I toggle my data on and off for battery purposes and if I try to send an mms on just wifi, it hangs and hangs. Turn off the wifi and turn on the mobile data and the mms goes right through. Strange but it seems to work. Thanks for the post
Same here. I can send text only messages on Wifi. But if I have an attached picture it will not go thru. I have to turn the Wifi off and then the picture and text message will go thru.
Download super power app from market. It will turn data off when phone sleeps.

Same. I have a previous Android Unlimited data plan that might not be available anymore? For $20. Not entirely sure but I heard that other than the $10/200mb plan there are $25/$30 Unlimited data plans.
You welcome guys and i also do the same as faith5x5. I wonder if theres a work around to sending mms if the datas off?

Are you sure of this? If my wifi is on and I try to send/recv mms, the 3G lights up. It might not count count toward your data limit, but I think it does utilize your mobile data connection to send/recv mms. I believe the OPs concern is that they want mobile data off, but to be available on demand for sending/receiving mms. Correct me if I'm wrong...

think about what you said for a minute. it is using your CELL, and not the wifi. if it was data it would just go over the wifi.
i can assure you that DATA and SMS/MMS are different. you can have SMS/MMS without having a data plan. dont forget there were cell phones before smart phones came around.
dont believe me? just try it out for yourself. shut off all data and send/receive sms/mms. it works. i have many users with captivates that accidentally turn off their data but texting still works....

Your confident answer gave me a scare for a sec, because I thought you might be right. Unfortunately you are confused, and consequently wrong as a result.
I will however concede a point - TEXTING works without a data connection. That was never in question. Re-read my post and you'll see I only mention MMS. To send or receive MMS you MUST have a MOBILE data connection. The only possible caveat to this is that this may be T-Mobile only??? I do not have any other carriers to test it on, so you may be right if you have AT$T.
Either way - ATLEAST for T-mo - mobile data must be active to send or receive MMS. If you are on WiFi, and try to send or receive MMS, it will enable mobile data to make that transaction happen. You do not have to have a data plan in order to use MMS, but mobile data must be enabled on the phone. I tested this personally as well as googled the subject to corroborate and compare my results. To quote someone's reasoned response that I found on the interwebz:
"Just to confirm, MMS can not be sent over Wi-Fi. The phone must have access to a carrier's network (its own or roaming) to send. The MMSC has a list of acceptable IP ranges to accept from and well when using Wi-Fi, it is not on that list . Plus if it did send over Wi-fi, the MMSC would not be able to identify correctly where the message is coming from and will not know whether it is a true message or spam."
You are right though, your Captivate using buds are able to send texts while mobile data is off, due to the obvious fact that texting doesn't use mobile data.

This is correct and what I'm experiencing. I'm on T-Mobile, have 200 MB data plan, using CM7 and RG, I want to be able to turn data off but have it come on automatically for mms (not SMS). I know mms does not count towards data usage but I still would want to be able to control it. I've tried apndroid and data toggle widget to no success.
Fyi if I go into CM7 network settings and uncheck data the mms will not send and will stay in "sending" mode
If I go into miui or evil 4g HD mobile settings I can unchecked data and CHECK enable alwayson data and my mms will work and my browser wont since data is off

what you want to do sounds like something that can easily be done with tasker. you could have a shortcut on your homescreen that launched a task (enabling data long enough for your MMS). there are probably other variables that could be used in this as well...tasker is extensive.

[Q] Samsung galaxy s4 sgh-1337 will not receive mms or group texts

I am in need of some serious help, I purchased an s4 on craigslist from an AT&T customer. I verified the phone at the store, and it was an active AT&T phone when I bought it. I then transferred my phone number to a new Straight Talk Sim, and put the sim in the galaxy . I set the APN settings to the support reps recommendation, and everything worked besides receiving group texts and receiving mms. I thought it was the APN settings, so I tried every setting I could find recommended on this, and other forums. None of them worked. The solutions I was able to find included rooting my phone, which I don't have time to do. Since I was unable to use the phone how I needed without mms, I gave up with straight talk and ported my number to a AT&T LTE gophone account. I figured that straight talk was the problem, so I was excited to transfer. Well, after porting today, I have faster Internet, but mms and group texts(incoming of both) don't work. I can send mms, but cannot receive it, and I can send group texts, but not receive them. I am using the default att settings that came which the phone as instructed by the rep. In the AT&T store today. If anyone can please assist me in figuring out why this is happening, and what can fix it, I would be greatly appreciative. I did a search for the APN issue before posting this, but what I found was related to getting it to work with straight talk. I just want it to work with ATT now. Thank you in advance for any help..
Is your mobile data turned on while you try to download it? It may seem silly but I didn't realize it had to be on before ;P
Data is on
Data is on, and the outgoing mms and group texting works. On two carriers now, the incoming mms and group texting does not work. Really need a solution for this if anyone can help.

go to settings>options>mobile network and make sure that "data services" is turned on then send an mms to yourself and see if that activates it.
Data is on. Something with the phone is going on.....
To my understanding, this has got to be a phone issue. The data has been turned on . The outgoing mms is working. The outgoing group text is working. I have been on two different sims with different carriers, and still have the same issue......

I'm having similar troubles:
I CAN send mms,
but I can NOT receive images [although I did when I first set up the phone a few weeks ago, it was automatic image retrieval]
NOW when receiving a mms, a white download button (within a yellow box that gives me the message size + expire info) does not work. I tap "download", and it shows it's trying, but then I keep getting error messages that the download failed.
For purpose of testing the DATA feature of my service & phone I turn off the Wi-Fi.
I'm able to access the internet via data.
I'm able to make calls
I'm able to send texts
I'm able to send mms
However, my phone can NOT retrieve mms sent to me
I've tested repeatedly sending mms to myself. I can send - NOT receive.
Error message: "Message not downloaded - Review message and try again"
I try again, and then the next error message is: "Message download failed"
I don't understand that it worked before seamlessly for a week (after changing APN settings 1x after initial set up of service) and now I can only send, but not receive!?!
I have a factory unlocked AT&T Samsung S4
Using NET10 service with Net10's AT&T Sim Card.
I actually just got off the phone with Net10's Tech Support. Was on the phone over an hour with Service Tech Rep. He was very kind and patient. I had the correct APN settings. We changed some to test = to no avail. Upon my request he gave me different APN settings to try, beyond those that should work for this phone, in case it would work. He stayed with me on the phone while I performed a "Backup & Reset" and then gave me the settings that should apply to my phone. Still the same problems. He concludes that the issue is with my phone.
We do have a local AT&T store. Is there any reset or other options I could request they please do for me????
Thank you in advance for any ideas, guidance that may help!!
PS: My current APN settings from Net10:
Apn name-NET10
Apn- tfdata
MMSC-http : / / mms-tf dot net
Mms proxy-mms3.tracfone dot com
Mms port-80
Fix?
Did you ever figure this out? I have searched high and low and have exactly the same problem, everything works except RECEIVING MMS. I'm on Straight Talk. Please, please, please help!
Why not just Odin the phone to 100% stock. Solution done.

did you had an iphone before? make sure to turn/sign off imessage in your previous idevice. IT happened to me as well. ITs one of the damn apply/imessage glitch because when you activated imessage it added your number to their cloud server.

Issues with MMS reception while on WIFI with Android Messenges

I am on T Mobile and I have had issues receiving MMS messengers while on WIFI. Does anyone have a fix for this? I read previously that there was an APN setting to change but I am not sure. Thanks in advance! Also, this is using Android Messages (Stock APP).

Once I made the changes I was able to send MMS and receive them
I'm also on T-Mobile and was not receiving mms when on Wi-Fi, but receiving them fine. The problem was fixed when I turned off Wi-Fi calling. Hope that fixes your issue also.
I agree the problem is fixed by turning off WiFi calling, but WiFi calling is something I want to keep on

As with the MMS on Wifi .. the APN that the Essential pulls is not complete .. NONE of the 4 it pulls. I would go in and edit yours. The MMS while on wifi regardless of wifi calling on or off .. should be fixed with the proper APN. Remember that you should reboot after changing the APN. My wife's was having an issue with MMS and weird signal issues. I fixed her up with a proper APN. It's a pitfall of a non-carrier phone. My U11 suffered the same issues. Anyway. Give a proper APN a shot.
I did this but am still having reception issues as well as MMS issues
To clarify if you make this chnage to get it to work, you need "Cellular" checked under Wifi Calling. If you have WiFi calls as preferred it still does not work. These changes and that setting allow the phone to jump back and forth when needed, correct?

I am on T Mobile and I have had issues receiving MMS messengers while on WIFI. Does anyone have a fix for this? I read previously that there was an APN setting to change but I am not sure. Thanks in advance! Also, this is using Android Messages (Stock APP).

I don't think MMS works over Wifi, though.

Sure it does. I just sent a gif from Gboard and a photo from my gallery to the wife and she's got an Essential on TMO. It works fine.
Again, a proper APN will make all this work properly.
What have those of you on Verizon been doing?
Hello - I saw this post while looking for an MMS solution for my PH-1 on AT&T. I have had Verizon, Sprint, Google Fi, and AT&T on this phone, and the only one that I could send/receive SMS/MMS was on Verizon while on my work network's WiFi. I work in a school building behind three layers of cinder block walls, and I have to have a way for this to work. I could go back to VZW, but I'm trying to avoid their high and not-unlimited Unlimited plans' rates. Can you direct me to the correct APN settings for AT&T? Thanks!
