All apps crashing - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have a really annoying problem with my phone(s) from oneplus.
The problem is:
at a completely random point in time, every app that i try to open, just closes immediately. every app! i can fix it through rebooting the phone but the problem occurs again after approximately 24 hours and i have to reboot again. i first bought the oneplus 6, there i noticed the problem.
I was in contact with the customer service of oneplus and they suggested me a lot of fixes which i tried (clearing cache, updating the phone, resetting the phone completely....none of that helped so i sent the phone back to amazon and i upgraded to the oneplus 6t because i thought that it might have been a hardware problem with my oneplus 6.
but thats not the case. now i have the same problem on my oneplus 6t and i dont know what to do anymore other than send this one back aswell and buy from another brand. i really love the oxygen OS and would love to stay with oneplus. I just hope that someone can help me fix this problem. Thanks,
UD

Must be something you are installing on your phones. Start fresh with a factory reset and add your apps back slowly, one by one, until you find the culprit.

I think there is something odd about your Google profile that may be the culprit, if it is not one specific app as described above.
Start with just one Google account and stock apps. If you see the problem, remove that account, reset phone, and set up with a different account to localize the problem. If it tracks to one Google account you can dig deeper to correct it.
I've seen complaints like yours that tracked to oddities with the Google account and transferred from phone to phone.
Keep the faith, it is correctable. Once you figure out where the problem us!

Did you restore anything from your previous device through Google Drive or anything? Are you fully stock? Rooted? Stable or on a Beta ROM?
If this was happening to me and I couldn't figure it out I would probably save all of my files on my PC, and completely start over with a stock ROM. It would be painful to not restore any apps with data, but in your case I might do that as well. If you want to use Titanium Backup (if it actually opens and runs) I would only restore apps you really need, and ONLY 3rd party apps you downloaded from the Play Store and go from there.
I can assure you there is nothing wrong with the device though, it's a software thing.

OnePlus 2 Sends Anonymous SMS to Unknown Number After Each Call

Hi, After Each call i make, my oneplus 2 device sends a strange SMS to an unknown number. i only get network notification about how much my sms cost. and it's damn expensive. please is there any inbuilt software i need to disable? this is eating all my call credits with time and i can't figure out what exactly is sending this sms and where exactly it is going.
Immediately After making calls, i see 'Sending' on my screen, then after i get a network confirmation about how much charge on the just sent SMS.
I am on stock firmware, no root and only WhatsApp installed apart from stock google apps. I did several factory resets but problem is still there.
Please Help.
OnePlus2 Device On Oxygen OS 2.2.1 64gb sandstone black with 4gb of ram.
Are you rooted? This is likely caused because you have installed an malicious app....
I make a factory reset and reinsall a new firmware.
Sounds like you rooted your phone with some shady Chinese rooting software. Better download OxygenOS 2.2.1 zip and install TWRP and then format system and data partition and then reflash the OxygenOS zip to get a clean system. If whatever is sending these SMS messages is installed on the system partition, factory restore using settings menu will probably not remove it.
This seems to be some user installed malware

True that is, never heard of such a thing as an SMS trojan. Factory restore and check if it still persist. You could try installing free Eset antivirus and do a scan for viruses and trojans to see if it finds it.
OR.. your a cheating and about to get busted!
Hope your not married!

Problem Solved Some-how
well after sleepless nights of researching and trying to investigate what exactly the issue is, i never got the solution directly, but rather noticed the problem is with oxygen os, i even downgraded to oxygen os 2.0, 2.1xxx till the latest version and the sms problem still existed even without root and any app installed except stock.
Here is what happened : i noticed the problem is within oxygen os itself, as i strongly believed an in-built app is collecting data analysis and sending them to a remote contact, i have no idea what kinda app it is exactly but i solved this problem after rooting my device, installing custom recovery and installing Android Iced Cold Project custom firmware. wowowow!! it was fast, smoother, sweet and a lot of customization. and hell yeah!! no strange sms after each call i make. i tested it over a week and i never experienced what i was experiencing on the stock oxygen os.
Last year, i bought the Gionee Elife E7 and i experienced same issue, it was sending sms to a strange number and it was really consuming my call credits, luckily, on the developers forum, the issue was addressed and an app was pointed to be disabled or removed after rooting and that solved the problem back then. On My Oneplus 2, i was hoping it should be the same case but unfortunately it appears i am the only one experiencing this issue. and well i strongly believe others might be out there experiencing this. i bought my device from indian market, (amazon.in) and i on a holiday in Ghana, and using it on Vodafone Gh mobile network.
as it stands now, i am happy on the AICP custom rom but this is a serious issue on oxygen os and i think it needs to be checked.
Hope this informs...

New Nexus 6P User, problems out of the gate

So like the title says, I'm a new Nexus 6P user, and I had problems out of the gate.
I bought the device 2nd hand from a guy off craigslist, after my S6 edge started over heating after I had the screen replaced (don't buy Samsung "edge" phones, I know your careful, but on the off chance you drop it, your in a world of trouble).
I tested the phone, before I bought it, it appeared pretty much brand new, everything worked. When I got home, and hard reset it again for good measure all hell broke lose.
After a hard reset the phone wanted to update to build 19 something. After the update and a reboot, the phone app kept crashing before I could finish the setup process. The only thing I could do is factory reset it again. This appeared to clear up that problem. I did the near by device thing, and restored it from what Google could find out about my S6 edge. I wish it was more of a restore like what you can do in the iOS world, but it's better then what we had before so it's cool. I noticed that Chrome would crash everytime you tried to use it only in less I uninstalled the update. After I got the phone to the point where I wanted it, I thought I was free in the clear. When I started trying to use music apps, they all crash. Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud. Then I noticed YouTube also crashed the same way. When I tried to make a phone call, the phone app would crash too... So the phone was useless. I downloaded the SDK and the most current build which I think was 20 something. I followed a guide on here and formatted the phone reinstalling everything around build 20. The only thing this fixed was the phone issue.
I could now make phone calls without it crashing, but I was in the same boat with some applications working, and the same ones that didn't work not working. I flashed this phone 5, or 6 times, with the last time me formatting the userdata. I read that it wasn't a good idea because it could lock me to only 32GB ( I had a 64GB version), but after I did the flashing along with the usedata format, I still had 64GB of useable space, however I still had the same issue with the same types of applications crashing. I tried older builds, same issue (also the older builds all had the problem with the phone app crashing to the point that the phone wasn't usable).
I ended up sending the phone to the manufacturer, which appears to be in the same metroplex I live in. Hopefully they can find a hardware problem under warenty and fix it. I'm making this post to see if anyone else ran into similar issues, and if anyone knows if this is a hardware build issue, that was hopefully resolved.
I'm sorry to be so long winded...

Essential ph1 twice random reboot

Just got this today and it's great besides being a bit smaller than my g6 and because of front camera design only being technically 5.5in screen for most apps especially games.
However since I have had it, it has randomly rebooted itself twice for no real apparent reason. Is this a known issue or something anyone else has experienced? I want to try to get a bit more information on it before contacting the eBay seller. It is a refurbished.
I have never experienced a random reboot. You might want to try factory resetting your phone and then setting it up with the fresh start option instead of restoring from a Google cloud backup. Was your phone on Nougat or Oreo when you received it? Were there any major software updates?
It was fully updated to 8.1.0 when I received it. April 5th security patch. It was factory reset and I started fresh. No backup other than logging into my Google account for contacts, passwords and logins and such. I never do backups and restores always start fresh other than Google account.

Must be rogue app, had mine 3 months and never had a glitch or reboot.

If you are still having the random reboots you might want to boot your phone into safe mode to verify that a third party app isn't causing the problem. Since your phone was refurbished it's also possible that it was damaged by the previous owner or returned for the same issue you are experiencing. I did read that some early PH-1 buyers had to return their phones because of hardware issues like overheating.
Just did it again while using chrome. Just froze up for a few seconds and restarted. Doesn't seem to be overheating and the first time it happened before I installed anything I think. Guess I'll try a reset and go from there.
Factory reset twice now. No 3rd party apps installed. Updated all apps on Google play. The default phone apps.
Now the phone is freezing and rebooting itself constantly. Out of control. I am in safe mode right now and hasn't frozen yet. I don't know what the hell is going on.
Would love to be able to fix this issue myself without having to do return shipping. I have contacted the seller already though.
If it doesn't freeze or reboot at all in safe mode that usually means an app that you downloaded is causing the problem. The normal thing to try would be to factory reset the phone, download one app and see if there are problems. If the phone seems to be fine download a second app and use the phone long enough to see if the phone is stable. If it seems fine download a third app and do the same.
That's obviously very time consuming and if you were running a phone with heavily modded code like OnePlus with Oxygen it would probably be worth the investment of time. But this phone runs stock Android. Unless you are installing something unusual that might cause stability issues what you are describing sounds like a hardware problem. You might have bad memory for example and not enough is going on when the phone is in safe mode to trigger the unstable behavior.
I think returning or exchanging the phone you bought is definitely your best course of action. I really like this phone but it sounds like yours is defective or damaged.
The only other thing that comes to mind is that sometimes if you own more than one phone the Play Store will show apps that aren't compatible with the phone you are actually using. Dialers, messaging apps, camera apps and music players made for a specific phone brand aren't usually compatible with other brands because they need modded framework to function properly. Some apps that definitely are not compatible with this phone do show up in my Play Store Library available for download. Is it possible you are downloading an incompatible app?
I factory reset and haven't installed a single app. Just updated everything that was stock with the phone after reset. I was thinking faulty ram too, seems like it is.
Yeah I guess it's toast. Last night while watching YouTube it froze. Screen scrambled with artifacts and the phone made a loud continuous howling sound like an emergency alert. I honestly thought it was an emergency alert until I saw the artifacting.
Unless someone here can possibly give me an idea of any other reason it could be displaying this behavior I guess I have no choice but to return it?

Someone in the Essential stock ROM dump thread just described the exact same behavior that you are experiencing. He hopes reflashing stock will fix it but since it's identical to what's happening with your phone I think he's going to end up disappointed. You might want to check out his post and see if he has any luck. It was the latest post in the thread so it should be easy to find.

Yeah that was me. Trying to get information on the procedure to manually reflash this phone with stock firmware. I shouldn't need to unlock bootloader to do it? Just trying to flash stock over stock to hopefully correct any os corruption. Also mine is apparently a unlocked Sprint variant even though it was advertised as being a normal unlocked variant. Not sure if the firmware from that thread will work for me.

Sorry I didn't notice that. I haven't done any flashing on this phone but I know I read that people with the Sprint phones were flashing the regular stock image to get rid of the Sprint apps and get updates from Essential rather than Sprint. But if you don't want to unlock your bootloader you can download official factory images from the Essential website and sideload using a computer. Flashing instructions are on the download site.
https://www.essential.com/developer/current-builds
Alright I reflashed the latest firmware from essential page via adb sideload. I highly dout it worked but I'll see.
What would I need to do from here to do a complete fresh reflash completely overrighting any trace of the old os? I still want to keep it stock but doesn't matter if I need to unlock the bootloader. Just want a complete wipe of the old os and fresh reflash to be sure any traces of corruption are removed to be sure if it's a hardware issue.
That's easy on single partition phones but much more difficult on phones with an A & B partition like the PH-1. You definitely need to unlock the bootloader. On my Pixel XL you needed to flash the factory image separately to partitions A & B to ensure there was nothing left from before but the procedure might be different on this phone. I went through the flashing instructions when I got this phone and think if you flash the full restore stock image it supposedly returns both partitions to stock automatically but that definitely didn't happen on the Pixel. Considering that this phone is supposed to be easy to hard brick (which was virtually impossible on the Pixel) I wouldn't chance it unless you can't return or exchange the phone from the seller.
Well side loading the ota from essential website didn't work. I'd say it's already hard bricked. Still crashing after a while of using it. Last night I loaded as many apps at one time as I could. Got maybe 10 opened at once before it crashed. Seems like faulty ram to me.
Wife just had it happen on her new White one twice today while playing Pokemon GO.
She says she also had her podcast app and hangouts open but minimized and not being actively used in the background.
She's on a fresh install of Oreo 8.1 with the Gcam mod by MGC_5.1.018_Urikill_vXXII.apk using the settings suggested by aer0zer0
Anyhow I hope its just a completely random fluke and not a serious issue as I have a new black one from Amazon in the mail and would really hate to have to return these otherwise wonderful devices.
Mine ain't no fluke. After it crashes if I immediately reboot it instantly crashes again. I have to let it sit a while turned off and reboot again to any significant time before crashing. Longest time it's ran before crashing since having it it's maybe an hour. Didn't notice it much at first because I didn't use it more than a few minutes at a time. So it was in sleep mode constantly crashing and rebooting. Now that I have been watching it more it just constantly keeps rebooting even while sitting idle. I'll glance over at my phone and low and behold it's rebooting again.

Ouch okay that most certainly sounds like a bad hardware issue as you suspected earlier.
Thankfully in her case the reboots were well apart from one another and the phone was fine after the reboot. Even let her play PKGO.
I mostly came in to comment to hopefully help by voicing that it had happened and the circumstances in which it did for her with the idea it might pinpoint some flaw in the overall system if there was one.

Help me solve my Idle battery drain - and better battery stats report posted

Hello,
Been struggling a lot with my battery drain since I bought my 6t.
I am unrooted and now with 9.0.7, I already uninstalled a lot of apps to try and locate the root cause for my battery drain. I never had social apps which I know can misbehave a lot.
I have location, nfc, etc always turned off, battery optimisation settings always on.
I installed better battery settings and what you see is during my sleep, and the phone drained a lot once more.
Another issue I am having is that each time the phone reboots the find my device is activated even after I set it to not do anything.
I need help though, I quite do not understand what I should do now.
What is my problem? What can I do to achieve the crazy screen on time some of you have? More, I would be happy to just solve the screen off battery drain. One day I had over 40% drain without using the phone more than 5 minutes.
Can someone please help me out?

The problem is that you messed up your stock Rom in the process of unrooting. My best advice is to root your phone again and back up everything with Titanium Backup. After that, use MSM download to return to stock ( The same software state you had it in when you first bought it). I can assure you that the hardware is fine, but misbehaving software will only cause more harm to your phone. No one will provide you with a simple fix like a flashable zip and dont panic because its not that big of a deal. I bricked my 6t right after misreading instructions, but it recovered and its heavily modded. Go back to stock and start over

I came up with that answer without checking those screenshots, but now its obvious. By unrooted, do you mean you had root and then unrooted or havent attempted anything? The other thing is obvious, your battery is draining because of google play services. I had the same problem, but i removed my gapps because i use better app alternatives that dont require google play services. The other thing is i use services though my browser than having a separate app for everything. I find it safer and i use Brave browser.

You probably got it right, I already had twrp installed but since it was not working I went back to stock. How did you figure that out?
I might need some help to do as you said since I do not want to brick the phone. What if i do a factory reset? Will it cure the problem?

A factory reset wont really fix the issue, but you could always give it a try if you backup your precious files first. The problem that i am currently facing on my device is that i cant port Google Camera. I realized that it doesnt work without google play services, but i am not going to start over from stock just to get one app (Doing so fixes everything, but there is a workaround). I am planning on Deodexing my stock ROM and installing MicroG. Its really difficult to find easy instructions , but i gotta challenge myself. Anyways, in your case you just need to give the MSM Download Tool a try, its normally used to unbrick devices and return them to stock. You can always use it in case you mess up your software to the point where flashable zips only cause more issues.
# 1 Backup
# 2 Factory Reset or MSM Downloadtool ( Your Choice!) The tool is on the Op6t Forum somewhere.

Accessed stock recovery, made a factory reset from there by erasing everything. In about 11 hours the phone used almost 20% battery and no screen on time! Just standing there the whole time. I think I really need to do something, will try that tool you pointed.
No chance of bricking right?

tried it, it gives me a sahara communication failed. not sure what should I do now.
EDIT: I remember better now. when I got the phone it was on 9.0.4, I updated to 9.0.5. Then I side loaded the temporary and somewhat "compatible" TWRP which I used to flash Magisk. not sure why but root checker said I was not rooted and since an official TWRPO seemed to be far I decided to lock the bootloader (this gave me the official recovery back).
Do you think this is what is causing me the battery drain? everything is working properly to the exception of battery drain.
ANOTHER EDIT: decided to contact oneplus directly and explained the situation (even mentioned I had twrp and that I flashed magisk. they asked me to send the phone so they will see if this is hardware problem or software. not sure if they are going to charge me or not but I think it is unfair to charge (lets wait and see).
Can anyone help me figure out how to solve this problem assuming this is a software issue? I would pretty much like to avoid shipping the phone, never had good experiences with these rma assistance in the past.
Hi Cesar,
Hentai already suggested you how your problem could be solved
Cheers

The mistake you are committing is this: having installed BBS, you should have taken an idle dump (as described in the OP of the BBS thread) and posted it in the BBS thread asking for help. Screenshots won't help.
Google Play Services by itself rarely drains battery on Oreo and especially Pie. All the apps go through Play Services for their requirements and if there is a misbehaving app, instead of finding it, people blame Play Services (I am not a fanboy of Google).
EDIT: Having said that, I just checked your screenshots. BBS is not functioning properly and the readings are skewed. Which version are you running? From your battery history screenshots, I see that you seem to have about 2% per hour drain. At best it can be brought down to 0.5%. Uninstall BBS, reboot and reinstall it. Let us see whether this time it runs properly.

I noticed that every time i disconnect the cable when phone is fully charged after few minutes the percentage drops to 98 and few minutes late to 95 and then is more more longer time to drop to 94 and become Solid the discharge.. Someone know what i can do for fix this issue
I am still in 9.0.7.
I think that drain right after disconnection from the charger also happened to me but not sure how it is now after my "cleaning" ! Before when it was draining a lot I had it for sure but the phone was always sucking battery.

[Oneplus 6T - (Unrooted) OOS 9.0.17] Google Acct. & Notification Issues

Hello Everyone. Coming back to XDA-Developers after many years as I have (2) problems that I cannot seem to fix on my OnePlus 6T. Would greatly appreciate help/input.
Purchased the phone on release day. My Phone is Un rooted and on Stock Software on OOS 9.0.17. Here are the current issues:
1. Google Play Store will NOT download/update apps if the Google App is Enabled - Downloads hang at 99%-100%.
Things Ive Tried:
- Clear Cache for App
- Downgrade App Version
- Reboot Phone
- Clear Phone Cache
- Wiped Phone
- Downloaded Official OOS Full Rom 9.0.17 and Re flashed, Wiped Data/Cache after flash (At this point.. Wtf!?)
Nothing at all I have done has had a change on this issue. The Only thing I can do is Disable the Google App. Even on a Fresh Reinstall of 9.0.17, with a full wipe, after configuring the google acct. It will NOT download any apps from Play store on setup unless I disable the google app. It even updates the google app at some point, which re-enables and the downloads stop. Playing around with it, when you disable, downloads start right up. Enabling it will put all downloads at a halt. I wiped my phone multiple times, even trying not to restore my backup and just starting fresh with my google account signed in - yielded no change.
2. Notifications - I have the Delayed/Inconsistent notifications bug. Its driving me absolutely crazy. The notifications are inconsistent and sometimes they work fine. Sometimes heavily delayed, sometimes immediate. Sometimes I will continue to receive the same notification over and over throughout the day despite dismissing the notification. On reading threads here, It seems that running a script when the phone is booted to disable deep and light idle is the only solution... Really?? I have not done this yet, because I frankly find it ridiculous and if this is what I need to do to get notifications, Im probably just going to go buy a new phone, because that's absurd. There has to be another way..
Things I've Tried:
- Set App to "Don't Optimize"
- Deep Optimization and Sleep Standby Turned off
- Adaptive Battery Turned off
- Clear Cache
- Wiped Phone
- Downloaded Official OOS Full Rom 9.0.17 and Re flashed, Wiped Data/Cache after flash (Again, wtf?)
I expected a Wipe to fix an issue like this but like the issue above, as soon as the wipe and even after I re flashed the phone, the problem was present immediately. This started happening after a software update for me. Otherwise the phone was rock solid for the first 8 months of ownership.
At this point, I'm at a total loss. It was a fantastic phone that I loved using very much. About 8 Months in, after a software update, these bugs started popping up along with some reduced battery life. I bought this phone with the expectation that it would JUST WORK. But these problems I've been having I cannot seem to get a fix or proper solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been searching around a lot with no real solution thus far. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, looking forward to hearing what anyone has to say!
quick question: are you using t-mobile stock rom or did you convert it into the international version?
---------- Post added at 03:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 PM ----------
the reason why I asking this is because I found that when T-Mobile plugs "their stuff" in, things lag. As much as I like t-mobile as my carrier, I feel that they "cripple" the phone with their stock rom.
I have the unlocked international version which I bought from OnePlus.

Have you tried format data rather than wipe data? This has worked for me in the past.
Can you do that with stock recovery? I didn't remember seeing that as an option.
Also, wouldn't re-flashing the currently loaded rom have the same effect?
