New unlocked E4: root before or after activation & system updates? - Moto E4 Questions & Answers

I'm thinking of picking up an unlocked Moto E4 from Amazon (I'm pretty sure it's the XT1768 Qualcomm variant) to use with a Verizon MVNO. Should I root it right away, or wait until after I get it activated and it does whatever system updates it wants to do to itself?
Thanks for any info.

Latter. Be aware Amazon branded varients have a history of being difficult to root and/or bootloader unlock regardless of carrier. I'd lean towards a fully unlocked/unbranded X1768 direct from Lenovo or an independent retailer.

I don't think it's Amazon "branded," just sold by them. The phone in question is item B06ZZVZKTR on Amazon.
(But it looks like B077Y79RBY is an Amazon branded version; I'll avoid that one.)

Agreed - that's the pup you want. Might consider one of the Amazon Warehouse offerings which are generally unused returns or suffer from a minor cosmetic flaw. Lenovo has discontinued this model; probably won't be available for long.

I got an unlocked Moto E4 XT1768 from an independent retailer and rooted it using magisk and carrefully following these instructions. https://youtu.be/Pjd74W9IqHU However, I'm not happy with it as for some reason I cannot move apps to the SD card without formatting it as an internal and was not aware it would hang on startup with an N/A message. There are other irritating issues.

*Dead end conversation with AT&T about unlocking bootloader. Thought I'd share.

AT&T: Hello! How may I help you today?
Chris: Hello thank you for chatting in how can I help?
Tim: hello I have a question about my phone
Tim: Verizon recently allowed it's customers to unlock their bootloaders via the motoroloa site. When will this happen for at&t
models of this phone? (moto x 2014)
Chris: Let me look into this Tim.
Tim: Verizon did it because you all we'rent pushing the marshmellow update
Tim: I would really like to install a custom rom and have complete control over my device.
Chris: We are currently prepping for sending out the Marshmallow update to our Android customers. For unlocking the bootloaders I believe that is done through Motorola in general, we just unlock devices through the network.
Chris: I cannot assist with setting up a custom OS/Rom on the device, for liability reasons, this would have to be done from your end, I apologize.
Tim: it was announced that this device would not get the update
Tim: will at&t allow motorola customers to unlock their bootloaders?
Tim: on this model
Chris: Unlocking bootloaders is handled on Motorolas end, we do not have access to that information on our end, I apologize.
Tim: but you could look into if this specific model has any unlocking info to be sent to motorola
Tim: right?
Chris: The only unlocking information I am aware of is unlocking the device for use with other networks/international use
Tim: Motorola is telling me that it is at&t that will not allow the unlocking
Tim: No no, unlocking bootloader. at&t specifically told motorola to not let customers unlock bootloader on this phone. Verizon just gave in, and I was curious if I can get any info
Chris: Not that I am aware of. I apologize for this inconvenience Tim. I was told by my supervisor this is only handled from Motorolas end, if applicable
Tim: that is unfortunate.
Chris: From what I read into the Moto X 2014 model may get the marshmallow update, from what I read it's still up in the air.
Tim: can you link me to where you read this?
Chris: I don't have the ability to send that article to you - this is on our database.
Tim: I've read many articles about how the moto x 2014 would not get it on either verizon or att.
Tim: strange that your database would say that
Chris: It's not finalized. At any rate I think Android would know whether or not the moto x 2014 model will get it and which carriers would have it.
Tim: ok, thank you
He doesn't seem very knowledgeable about the situation.
Seem like you was talking to a brick wall
seems like part bot, part trainee.
We all need to message ATT on Social Media to get a proper response.
Sent a Tweet @att & @attCares regarding this very subject.
Do it guys. Lets show them the potential of power users who want their bootloaders unlocked.
well i just asked twiter: @att @lenovo @motorola now that the @verizon moto x 2014 has an official unlock for the bootloader when will the att version?
Doing this right now. I've only messaged them on fb but these are all good ideas.
Thanks brother!

Great man. Still hoping att will release Marshmallow for the X (the last true Moto/ not Lenovo).
I've had conversation with AT&T and Motorola. Both are pointing at each other for unlocking. Not sure where should I bang my head.
"At any rate I think Android would know whether or not the moto x 2014 model will get it and which carriers would have it." Proves they don't know much lol. How could Android know if a phone will be updated? Lmao.

Surely, you are joking.
For one thing, the IMEI on the device won't match one on the box, which a good seller (if it wasn't Amazon directly) would have denoted, prior to shipping it out.

Lol.I bought directly from Amazon Warehouse deal- used. Haven't noticed a different between Marsmallow and Lollipops even battery life.
For $160 used- like new still in warranty, it is a nice thing too keep as a backup. Probably among the last devices with Motorola's badge on it ( Lenovo about to kill the brand tho).
Nexus 6 is pretty cool but it's size really bothers me.
ATT truely suck, will never buy any phone with att on it.
It would make sense if they benefitted some how from our inability to unlock but they don't. What the he11 is the issue here.?

The Device is End of Life already for AT&T. These devices are not under warranty anymore. All 2 year subsidies should complete later this year on these devices as well. AT&T is grasping at straws at this point; looking for reasons to deny all owners of a bootloader unlock.

ATT: want security ,buy new phone
Att and moto did the same thing with the moto X 1st gen.
BTW, moto X 2014 is barely 1 year old flagship ( even younger than Galaxy S5 and LG G3)...6months ago, people paid 499 for the X and Motorola is still selling it now.
I read somewhere that Netherland's consumers filling lawsuit against SamSung for not updating that Galaxy S2/3??? Lol. I hope same thing happens to Att and MotoLenovo.

FYI, The Moto X 2014 was released in September 26, 2014 as per this press release; it's more than One Year Old. The Moto X 2015 (Style & Play) was announced in July 2015 & released between August and September 2015, replacing the 2nd generation Moto X.
End of Life @ AT&T has nothing to do with Motorola's continued sale of the device.

Yes, there is a lawsuit in the works in the Netherlands pertaining to recent Samsung devices only, not devices as old as the S2/3.
Had a conversation with AT&T after ATTCares directed their DMs on twitter there:
AT&T: Hello! How may I help you today?
Brett: Hello! My name is Brett. I hope you are having a great day! How may I help you today?
Me: Been instructed to chat with one of y'all via the @ATTCares twitter account.
Brett: Sounds good to me How can I assist you?
Me: Have a Moto X2/ X 2014/X 2nd Gen, which is SIM Unlocked & already out of warranty that was recently bought second hand. Require the bootloader to be unlocked. Motorola's site states that the carrier is restricting the unlocking via their site, so is there a form or some kind of consent that AT&T can forward to Motorola to bypass this restriction?
Brett: Right! So AT&T's phones are locked at the time of purchase. but you can process an unlock on att.com/deviceunlock which will process the device itself to be unlocked from the carrier and usable with other carrier's SIM cards
Me: As stated, the device is already SIM unlocked. Bootloader is completely different.
Brett: Gotcha! Give me just a moment to check into that process for you
Me: Sure.
Brett: Alright so AT&T does not actually support unlocking the Bootloader. You can factory reset the device to load the default software.
Me: That doesn't help me at all. This device is owned outright (no subsidy remains on it), and as its owner, there should be no restrictions on the device as the obligation to the provider has lapsed.
Brett: I can definitely understand that, however AT&T does not support those therefore we would not be able to unlock that for you
Me: The device is out of warranty as well, so there is no chance of any warranty service at this point on it.
Me: Is there a link/page on your site that specifically states what you are stating here?
Me: Would like concrete clarification, moving forward.
Brett: Currently I am not showing any specific Esupport articles on the Bootloader and I do understand that I am checking to find the proper article to help you with this matter
Brett: https://www.att.com/global-search/s...st=FALSE&tabPressed=FALSE&q=bootloader#!/All/ There is Multiple Forums on the subject however and our policy and procedures to prevent us from doing that process for you.
Me: As a app developer, this is quite restrictive. As the device is owned outright & out of warranty, it is not consumer-centric to restrict what can and cannot be done to the handset. Especially since there is no expectation of Marshmallow on this particular handset. Despite its young age, AT&T doesn't seem to be allowing it to get the OS upgrade.
Me: Sending a search for the Bootloader is not providing a clear Company Issued Statement on this matter.
Brett: I do apologize for that, Software updates are sent to the provider and then the provider send those out to the devices capable for them.
Me: Had already did the appropriate searches on AT&T's site for this info.
Me: All global versions of the Moto X 2014 have received or are receiving Marshmallow, other than AT&T and Verizon variants. Verizon has made the concession and allowed users to unlock their bootloader, but AT&T remains the restrictive provider here.
Brett: Using that search, there is not any article pertaining to that subject.
Me: Guess, getting a Consumers' Rights Association involved in possible legal action is the next logical step for any user that has a fully owned device that is out of warranty.
Brett: While there are no legal repercussions for customers who choose to root their devices, AT&T does not support rooting devices, nor do our partner OEMs. In addition, rooting a device is a violation AT&T's wireless terms of service.
Me: Rooting has nothing to do with unlocking the bootloader.
Me: AT&T hasn't made a clear statement pertaining to OS upgrades for this device. It is globally upgraded thus far as well as domestically (the Pure Edition is already on Marshamallow), so what is the holdup via AT&T?
Brett: The Bootloader is there to keep the device from using unrecognized versions of Android that have not been approved from the carrier.
Brett: As for what is currently preventing that measure, I would not know if there is any plans for that device currently
Me: Where is the Company Statement to this?
Brett: The source of my information on this matter is from the Internal policies and procedures.
Me: Alright, thank you for walking the company line. Guess developers are not welcome on AT&T. Duly Noted.

As with the OP's convo, AT&T doesn't seem to care that they are tarnishing their customer relationships due to this 'blind' objective.

Moto G4 Model XT1625 Not Eligible for Bootloader Unlock

I purchased the G4 32GB model XT1625 from Amazon (not their ad version) over the weekend for $179. I followed the instructions how to request the bootloader unlock code from Motorola, it says my device is not eligible to unlock. Has anyone purchased XT1625 from Amazon and are able to get the unlock code from Moto?
This has already been covered, read the other threads. It was only available for about a week to unlock, then Motorola/Amazon put a stop to it apparently. Return the phone if not satisfied.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. Some have said the Retail, non-ad version was supposed to be bootloader unlockable. Others were saying No Moto versions from Amazon qualified.
Here is the list. If you got the Non Prime Exclusive, it qualifies for the unlock: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215 <-------according to that at least.

When requesting the bootloader unlock, did you manually scrub the output of get_unlock_data? Or did you use the online data scrub tool?

Yep, that sucks bigtime. I would imagine that their sales would go down if this became known. So apparently the only advantage of the no ad is ota's if one considers that an advantage.
I've already posted a 1 star review on Amazon and hopefully others will.

They're treating it like a phone you'd buy from AT&T or another carrier.
The Amazon ad subsidized phone understand... But the stock moto phone... I'm sceptic.
hi 2kmy477,
fyi, i received the moto g4 standard edition with the $50 instant rebate from amazon. i purchased the phone on the 8th of july and received the package on the 21st. Immediately after receiving the phone I did a bootloader unlock attempt and it worked on the first try. All I can say is make sure you copy all lines of the boot loader unlock string for your device that is shown after entering the fastboot bootloader unlock command. After copying the entire string, make sure to enter it into the online scrub tool that is on the bootloader unlock website of motorola.
Now use the cleaned bootloader unlock string from the online scrub tool to apply for a bootloader unlock code. This should activate a blue button labeled "Request Unlock Key", which will give you the unlock key once you click it.
If things don't work despite this, I don't know what to say. Motorola specifically said on their website that the "Prime Exclusive" version of the G4 will be locked officially, whereas other variants will not. As stated above, I received the standard edition of the G4 after the 19th of July which is when new bootloader unlock attempts for the Moto G4 Prime exclusive started to get blacklisted.
Also, make sure it says "retus" in the software channel of your phone. To locate the software channel of your phone, open the phone settings and tap on "about phone". "retus" is motorola's software channel for all moto g4 phones, except the prime exclusive version which has "amzn" instead of "retus". If you have "amzn" in your software channel, I think it is best to return your phone and get the standard edition from amazon.
Please let us know if you happen to resolve this problem!
Can anyone else confirm a non-ad subsidized, standard version Moto G4 if purchased from Amazon cannot be bootloader unlocked?!?!
Frankly, I would be shocked if a normal retail version was, but I want to verify... I was almost ready to click to purchase on one for my son who broke the screen on his Huawei Ascend Mate 2 this morning... I would really rather not if it can't be unlocked, I would just order it from Motonova and let him pick the color and stuff and he can use his old Nokia 520 for a few extra days.

I just (15 minutes ago) unlocked the bootloader on my amazon-bought, non-ad version of the G4. Unlock code worked fine, I copy-pasted each line manually, including the "#"s.
Confirmed. Waited too long to unlock. Now i get "not eligible" message. /sigh

Should I take a gamble and buy the Amazon version and hope bootloader gets unlocked?

On the verge of getting a new phone. I can deal with 2GB of ram if the cost of a phone is 180, and maybe even 240 for the 4gb version. Once I get up to spending 230 for 2gb and 300 for 4gb, I think there are better phones that arent too far away in terms of cost.
Does this phone look like its getting the bootloader of the prime version unlocked? Im on the fence on which one to order, or if I should just spend more and get either the OP5 for $480 or the S8 for 525 with a trade in. Ive heard rumors, but not too sure if they were true.
It's all personal choice. It may be unlocked tomorrow, it may never be unlocked....

If you are in the US you could try what someone else did in another thread and go to your local Best Buy and try to do a price match. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it myself. Otherwise I'd stick to non-Amazon. The price difference is not worth the hassle.
I've not seen a 'hack' here that unlocks the normal bootloader; afaik everyone has to get the code from Motorola. So it's very unlikely you'll see a hack that unlocks the Amazon phones. Just my amateur opinion though.
So the Amazon version bootloaders can be unlocked with Motorola codes? -- I read "no" elsewhere. Of no, Amazon is as bad as Verizon.
I want a $200-300 good phone I can root and play with custom Roms that everything works on Verizon and it seems the G family phones do this best from what I can tell. I have no issues voiding a warranty on $200-300 which is less than half the cost of a flagship device which cost so much for features and technology I neither use nor can notice. I'm pretty much done with overpriced flagships. any opinions on best non-flagship Verizon phone with unlockable bootloader? (nexus 6p is a bit too old of a device for me).

So technically both the Amazon and non-Amazon version come locked. The difference is that with the non-Amazon version, you can get the unlock code directly from Motorola's site. The Amazon ones could technically be unlocked if Motorola provided the unlock code, but as per their agreement with Amazon, they will not.
It is possible that this will change in the future (likely not until the next version comes out), but I wouldn't really bet on it. What is still unclear is whether getting the Amazon version and then paying to have the ads removed will ever allow you to unlock the bootloader. Currently I don't believe it will, but in reality all Amazon would have to do is provide the IDs to Motorola of which phones had paid for this service. I don't see Amazon in a rush to do this though.

I don't understand why everyone thinks unlocking bootloader automatically voids the warranty...
Motorola will honor any hardware defect, despite an unlocked bootloader. Anything software related it's not covered after an unlock.
1. This is a law
2. Motorola has stated this.
3. Google search shows previous devices were still fixed or replaced, due to 1. and 2.

Probably because it is all over the interwebz that rooting and unlocking BL triggers tamper flags and voids the warranty with most manufacturers, or perhaps maybe people are concerned about the software somehow affecting the warranty if they send it back to Moto as bricked or with some half-baked ROM on it. Because you know, many folks go and root but don't know how to unroot or reset tamper flags, so they become confused or worried about warranty status on their $700 - $1000 device. LOL, I don't know what the big deal is either..... but anyway, on a sub-$300 mid-range phone I'm not buying it for the warranty.
For anyone landing here with the Amazon Ads inquiry... there exists a thread on how to remove amazon ads with varying results and conditions - knock yourself out.
For Black Friday 2017 - the Moto website had 64/4 version for $225 and then Moto direct and Target had the 32/2 version at $169 which was cheaper than amazon version. I jumped on the 64/4 direct from Moto $225.
Yeah, it took me a few months to pull the trigger, but I am glad I was patient. The G5+ IPS is good enough, and I never used NFC anyway, and once I saw 64bit ROMS working on G5+ and then at this price, it was a no-brainer for me.

I don't understand why everyone thinks unlocking bootloader automatically voids the warranty...
Motorola will honor any hardware defect, despite an unlocked bootloader. Anything software related it's not covered after an unlock.
1. This is a law
2. Motorola has stated this.
3. Google search shows previous devices were still fixed or replaced, due to 1. and 2.

1. This depends where you live... the only place I know of that has this "law" is the EU
2. Only for areas where the law requires it, otherwise look at: Legal Terms for bootloader unlocking on Moto's global support site, it is quite clear and unmistakable that just obtaining a lock code, even if never used, voids the warranty for the entire device, hardware and software.
3. Again, see #1
(EDIT: Sorry, I see someone else dug up this old thread after I posted this... Sorry, wasn't trying to rehash an old subject)

OK, I screwed up buying the Amazon Prime E4. What's the best I can do?

I'm upset that I wasn't told the bootloader was locked when I bought it. It only seems fair to disable the ads, per this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3631406
But what else can I do to customize this (otherwise OK) phone? I've unlocked the Dev mode, disabled/uninstalled some bloatware. Everything else I know how to do requires root, so no Xposed, Titanium, or Tasker. Still feeling cheated -- I researched enough to know to avoid the Verizon one, but I didn't expect Amazon to lock the bootloader.
Any suggestions?
You can return it to Amazon if you want, just tell them it has ghost touch issues (two of mine did) or that the fingerprint sensor doesn't work for apps (most apps don't use the way it does it).
Thanks, nice to know I have that option!
send it back and buy the no ads model. best buy also has the unlocked models on sale.
Can you confirm the no-ads model has an unlocked bootloader?
The sources I saw simply said that Verizon (and now Amazon) were the only vendors to request that moto NOT provide unlocking codes.

Yes, the no ads model has an UNLOCKABLE bootloader.
Thanks much!
A few notes to answer my own question: I have found some hidden apps exposed by AnyCut, including the Marshmallow Easter Egg (yep, on a Nougat phone), a Wifi calling toggle (that won't work), Testing menu, IMEI/serials lister, and some CDMA and IP network options. Still pretty dismal, in other words.
Not a bad phone, though, especially for the price. It just seems creepy to try adb and be told "insufficient permissions..."

you sure? I have the $99 amazon ads version and ADB works fine. used it to disable the ads. I pay amazon enough money so I really do not feel bad about it...
Hmmm, now you mention it, that's how I killed the ads, also.
Hasn't been working lately, though.
I have updates turned off, I wonder what has changed?
Thanks for the info, I'll have to look into it.
And roger on the not feeling bad.

Lockscreen Ads - Removal???

Searched but found nothing. Since May of 2013 I've been using an LG Optimus G Pro E980 on AT&T (rooted, unlocked, tethered) . The Bluetooth issue from KiKat and earlier (fixed in Lollipop, but this phone cannot get L) is causing me to have to factory reset the phone a little too often lately, and I feel it's time for, and I'd like to get an upgrade.
Funds are somewhat limited right now for a phone purchase, and the G6 ticks almost all of the boxes in the search for my next phone. That along with the reduced price on Amazon, puts this at the top of my list.
Amazon Prime currently has the G6 for $399 with Lockscreen ads, or $549 without. I figure for $150 savings, I'd opt for the ads and see if they are removable after the sale. I've seen some tutorials on how to remove the Prime Lockscreen ads from the Moto G5 where some code is injected and it removes the ads, at least until the next OTA update, but I've not seen a hack for the G6. I'm curious if anyone has the Prime-version G6 with ads and if they've been successful in removing the ads.
Can a pristine version of the OS be dropped onto the G6 and turn it into a "normal" no-ad version (AT&T)?
I have not scoured the threads yet (didn't want to get super involved in learning everything about the phone if ad-removal is not doable), but is this phone relatively easily hackable,, bootloader-unlockable, rootable? And, if so, is there a no-ad hack, or are the tools accessible, and is there an ad-free OS that will work on an AT&T G6?
Thanks in advance!!!

You cannot drop a new ROM because the BL is locked.
The Essential phone is $399 with the 360 camera on Amazon for Cyber Monday.
Essential Phone does not work for me. One of my requirements is expandable memory. I'm constantly factory resetting my current phone often when I screw something up while hacking. All my important data and music files are on micro SD, and a reset to the phone is a quick process without having to reinstall 60 gigs worth of data.

I understand; but if you BL unlock and install TWRP, you don't have to factory reset.
You can do a dirty flash and keep your data.
You aren't going to be hacking anything on a BL locked LG G6.
I do understand your point though. It's just that Amazon, locks their promo devices down.
I was under the impression that the US997 was BL Unlockable.

Only if you buy one that is specified to be unlocked.
There are two versions with the same number and only the one sold from places like B&H has an unlockable bootloader.
The US Cellular version is also called a US997 and you cannot unlock the BL.
The Amazon version is locked down.

Love this forum and those who post here!!!!
I was not aware there was more than one version of the US997. I thought there was one and only one US997, but now I stand corrected. Thank you!
Just to reiterate....are you saying that there is no work around via flashing to get the firmware that B&H, or a non-Amazon seller might have?
And a change of subject, and possibly a newbie question...I've never purchased an "unlocked" non-carrier-branded phone before, so I have absolutely no experience in these matter!!!!! I'm going to be using this phone on the AT&T network. Since it is not branded to AT&T, how will I get OS updates and security patches? Can I assume that AT&T won't even push OTA updates towards this phone?
And I've read a thread that said that with an unbranded device, I would not get VoLTE, nor WiFi calling. Any truth to this?
With a locked BL there will be nothing you can do with the Amazon version except use it.
As for AT&T, I don't know about VoLTE or WiFi calling.
On Verizon I get VoLTE and I don't care about WiFi calling.
OS updates come from LG. Verizon can't push updates to my phone.
