Beta builds and the T-mobile variant - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

I'm new to oneplus, I want to get this phone through T-mobile because of the awesome bill credits on my old Pixel XL
I'm no longer really into rooting and roming but I do often flash the beta software to my pixel xl.
My question is how long is it typically between beta builds and the final software being released.
I want to know what kind of wait I'm signing myself up for if I go with the T-mobile version.
thanks,

Unfortunately they will not give tmobile users a beta build.

I know they won't give beta builds, that's why I'm asking how long is it usually between beta builds and full releases? so I have some idea how long I'll be waiting for new software.

In your case, I would go with the non T-Mobile version, but it's your call.
OnePlus releases both beta and stable builds concurrently, but beta builds get updated faster.
T-Mobile tends to y take longer fit updates as it goes through more tests and certifications before they push it out. I know OnePlus is in talks with T-Mobile to see if they can afford up their certification process.

Nougat release by US carrier until 8 Feb?

I read an article where nougat will release Feb/ Mar time frame for US carriers ...What's your input on this? I believe spring time but end of Jan wld be perfect!
Sent from my SM-G935T using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I think its f***** stupid that we have to wait so long for a update, all updates should be beta tested on all android platforms and released at the same time just like Apple !
The parts of the world that are getting Nougat right now are just being beta testers by no choice. Millions of more phone users will help find any overlooked bugs. I'll be glad to be one of the last to get Nougat. At least I'll be getting the most stable release.
It would be nice if everyone got it at the same time but each carrier has to make the changes they want in and then they have to work out the bugs they have created and then they release to us. So I am waiting patiently for a stable release.
F*** the carriers and updates they pick and choose. I hate apple but damn. At least they roll out the ios updates WW for the most part and don't let a carrier dictate what will be used and what wont. Really don't understand why android and google do this.
Its not their fault it is the carriers who have to test it and add their bloatware. Nougat been finished

No Android P beta for Oneplus 5t, the existing flagship of OnePlus

For the first time Google, Android P's latest beta will be available on non pixel / Nexus devices including OnePlus 6, Essential PH-1, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Sony Xperia XZ2, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, and Vivo X21.
I immediately jumped to get my 5T signed up, only to face disappointment.
Android P beta for OnePlus 5t was skipped and the same was available only for yet to launch OnePlus 6.
Lately I have got a feeling that OnePlus has shifted their interest from consumer focused company to buiness oriented company who are more concerned about thier new flagship and less concerned about thier previous users.
The unofficial treble support was provided to our device by the hardworking developers of OnePlus community but OnePlus did not make any efforts to provide the same.
The OnePlus community should send a strong message to the company that they should not make the old coustmers feel left out.
We should pass following message to OnePlus:-
a) Providing official treble support to 5 and 5t.
b) Providing the lastest Android version along with their new flagship phones.( Which will be possible if support for project treble is available).
c) Providing all the exlusive upcoming features to previous generation phones (5 & 5t) till the time hardware permits.
A) That is not going to happen. But Mokee ported Treble so hopefully an P Beta port will come to 5T at some point.
C) This is OnePlus we're talking about, I doubt they will.
I really don't think they care about the community anymore.
I thought OnePlus had quietly prepared the 5T for Treble by creating an empty Vendor partition in the background? It's not formatted yet, and OOS doesn't see it, but it's there?
I'm unhappy too, that they didn't use the 5T for their P beta, but if they provided the official base for Treble, then maybe we'll still see something from them or at least it will be easier for the XDA Devs...

A) If we push.. all of us.. we might stand a chance.
C) Exactly
As I commented in the news.
Quote Google: "beta available TODAY from those OEMs".
The "today" tricked me into thinking that this would be my beloved 5t but Oneplus let Google speak about an even unannounced device just to get in that damn presentation.
In other words: Oneplus doesn't even care about their existing flagship the moment they know the rough release date for their next one. This is beyond everything I have ever seen in the smartphone business. At the same time advertising heavily the OP5t on Amazon to get one of the last ones.
Oneplus was never a community focused company they just said it so often that the people thought it would be so.
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!
As far as I can see this whole Situation; we will get a taste of Android P anyway. Either officially or non official.
Official: because there in fact is an unused Partition (unformatted)
Unofficial: because hobby dev peeps around the globe were able to make the oneplus 5t Support treble.. therefore custom Rom creators should be able to create Android P roms for it.
Are y'all really surprised that we wouldn't get a P beta? Lol

Yes I'm in. Let's make a petition on change.org ?
Many people said of the oneplus 5t, it's the best against essencial phone... Better software, updates, design... But Essencial phone 1 have the beta xD
Now who is the best ??
I have a 5t
Android P require treble ?
I know this won't go down well, but did none of you do your homework on OnePlus before buying the 5t? OnePlus launch a new, replacement device every six months and concentrate on marketing and selling that; Every six months our new (to us) device gets moved to the back burner.
This is not a new strategy, and should not come as a surprise! Google how OnePlus 2 owners felt! I owned a 3t that was virtually obsolete four months later!
And every time this happens - every six months when a new device is launched - there is a thread on XDA to petition OnePlus about the unfairness of it all!
If this news is a surprise to anyone you should've been more aware of how the company operates.
Rant over.
Really dont't care for stock android p beta.
Much prefer for oxygen beta program with android P
Stock android is very poor and lack customization and feature option that oxygen offer.
If i want stock android experiance better solution is AOSP custom rom with plenty of feature and customization insteed of totaly naked stock android by Google IMO.
So we get OOS beta based on P later. (OP6 get first.)
I'm guessing we're still getting Treble support. There already is a /vendor partition created in one of the Beta updates iirc and they said: "Something exciting for you OnePlus 5/5T owners later this summer". So i'm guessing they're referring to Treble support.

Yh one does not always remember the exact words. P requires Treble we do not have Treble hence why we don't get it yet. If you really want it install MoKee ROM which enables Treble and wait for an Android P GSI.
Everyone should stop acting like treble is a hardware based thing.
The only reasons we did not get the beta is that Oneplus 1. is too lazy to deliver 2. wants to boost OP6 sales.
Treble is something completely software based and can be added at any given time (even without bricking the device).
I think the real reason we are complaining is (like the title says) that Oneplus is announcing stuff for a device that isn't even on sale yet.
It's like Google would have said "...and of course Pixel 3 is getting the beta from day one. We are already testing it internally and it is working great. In the meantime we are all very happy that you bought Pixel 2".
Not surprising from OnePlus. Unfortunately, they only seem to be concerned with what's the best way to make more money even if it involves abandoning their current users. This move, like all the moves they make, is about money. Doesn't matter if they ignore their current flagship device or users. Sad but true.

Android Updates?

The one thing holding me back from immediately ordering the 6T upon release is my experience with the 5 and Android updates. I am still waiting on the update to Pie, despite it's wide scale availability and other devices being updated already.
Does OnePlus plan on changing their software update cycles to match someone like Essential?
We would all like faster updates, but android pie is not widely avaiable yet, it doesn't even show up on statistics: https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/
Not that many devices have received yet, but I agree that updates should already be faster, Essential did a good job.
You can expect 2 year software support for 6/6T is what i can say for now. Rest wait AMA/FAQ's to be shared after the launch for the precise info.

Is it fair to say that OxygenOS can be used therefore up until November 2020 and then if you want the latest version of Android thereafter (for those who plan to use for greater than 2 years) to flash a custom rom ?

OnePlus devices always have great developer support and the same is going to continue with the 6T. Official support and software updates will be assured till 2020. Official AMA and FAQ's after the release will confirm the same for your satisfaction.
Custom roms will be available since the beginning as soon as the sources are out and developers start getting their units within the 2-3 weeks of the launch, custom roms come in soon. Kernels would come even before infact within a week or two as the sources would be out soon after release which is generally the case when it comes to oneplus devices.
Buy with confidence, I'll see you around :good:

U11 Slice of Pie

With the August HTC announcement via Twitter that the U11 will receive Android 9.0 (Pie), wanted to get a specific Pie discussion going. I'm aware of the Software Update thread, etc,... but this is U11 PIE specific here.
Me personally. I'm hoping PIE brings a radio firmware update as well. I never got my Oreo VZW SMS issues resolved other than to stick with 7.1.1 until something comes along that works. And I don't like not having the latest security patches.
So that brings me to the next point. Hopefully PIE fulfills the promise of decoupling security updates from firmware and software updates. i.e., be able to always implement the latest security patches for that version of Android, regardless if the OEM provides updates or not. Here's to hoping.
Anyways, I know there are some PIE based ROMs out there, but hopefully when the first official HTC released PIE update hits the street, you'll hear it here first.
Cheers
1st of all, do you both have a history? or I'm the only one who feel this way.
2nd, Currently there is a Pie ROM here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/u11/development/rom-slim7-t3855041), try if you want
For me, I'm not so excited with HTC U11 official PIE release, since the U11 has capacitive keys so they cannot have or evolve to a way we can have gesture or something like that.
What I'm more looking forward to is all the custom ROM which will come after the official release !
So that brings me to the next point. Hopefully PIE fulfills the promise of decoupling security updates from firmware and software updates. i.e., be able to always implement the latest security patches for that version of Android, regardless if the OEM provides updates or not. Here's to hoping.

I'm debating if I should wait for pie or get a pixel 3xl. I have 2 U11's and one I got for free. With the black Friday deal on Verizon I won't even lose money. The question is HTC or Google Pie...
Me 2. But the boss may not be pleased I get another phone after a year.haha. Next phone pixel for me. Our phones are as important as our computers these days. She is apple fan too and she has told me a few times get an iphone over the years . Sure rip off to start but it gets updated for years. Despite this I like the flexibility of Android so pay extra for the pixel and get security updates.
When they announced we were going to be getting Pie on Twitter they stated 'Timeframes for roll-out will be announced in due course'. Has anyone heard anything about the roll-out as that statement was made three months ago?!
In this case "in due course" translates to "we have no plans".
I haven't seen any new information about Pie for the U11 since this announcement, and don't expect Pie in 2018.
Maybe in early 2019 ? But even that isn't sure.
Maybe HTC will close down before releasing it.

That's what I think. I did email HTC Support (waste of time) who advised me to go to settings and check for update! As much as I like this phone it will be my last HTC as they do not supply any after-sales customer care whatsoever!
i have similar sympathies. Up until now all of my phones except for one have been HTC devices but I have a feeling the company can't keep up anymore. Sense hasn't had a decent upgrade in ages. HTC apps like dialer look and work dated and now updates also take way too long. I remember that at some point they said 90 days (back in the Lollipop days) after a new android release and that would put Pie in November but we haven't even had a proper leak yet.
Unless they come out punching hard with the next model I'm afraid this has been it for me and HTC and I'll move maybe to the Sammy camp or something.
Other than the lack of updates, its a great phone, my minor issue is how bluetooth is handled when compared to my last phone (lg v20 ) which got water damaged. With the Lg v20 you could have 2 bluetooth devices connected at the same time. So in car you not need to worry if you had your headset connected if you got a call. Its a minor issue but a annoying you have to remember to turn off your watch (i got a huawei band 2 watch you can take calls on).
Anyway back on topic, I wonder Pie would add this feature or not so if you got a call you can take it on any of the two bluetooth devices.
Since the rumor that HTC was canceling early 2019 flagship phone, I think that may have some influences on Pie.

Thank you for contacting HTC! We know how important your security means for you. We apologize as we do not have an information as to when security patches will be released. Is absolutely different. The life version is an "android one" device.
Is normal, as expected, that the u11 life get first the updates.
Now, should update the u12+, then the u11+ and the last the u11. If we get the update on February I would say that we are lucky.

Android 10 coming out soon....

Hey y'all,
With Android 10 coming out soon to the 6T I have a couple questions. I have a OP6T from tmobile and I have "converted" it to the international rom. I'm curious if I will be able to dirty flash like I have with all the other oxygen updates. I have been using the local upgrade option after downloading the firmware and putting in my root folder. I know we technically won't know until someone tries this but was curious to see if anyone had any thought. Do you think this will be possible? I am rooted currently and usually will just remove some of my modules and then use the local update option. I haven't had any issues yet and hoping this will be a similar experience!

Not sure, but when updating to a major upgrade of Android (i.e. 9 to 10) I would want a clean install, and you will be going from stable to Open Beta.

What features, on Android 10, are you interested in? Personally, I don't see any real "difference" between how 9 works versus 10.
I don't have 10 on my 6T, but it did become available on my backup phone (essential PH-1). To tell you the truth, other than any security patches, I couldn't really see the difference.

What's 7 Pro from your signature "last +1"
The sad truth is, the ONLY ones who deliver on a constant annual basis are Apple-IOS and Google-Pixel (Nexus), with a small exception of Essential (basically, an outlier with their 1 device). Everyone else, we're stuck in limbo. Even these direct releases (IMHO, IOS 13-13.1.-13.1.1. was a blunder, and a buggy one, and it's still a bit buggy) can be a mess.
Basically, it's a toss-up. Get more RAM, save some cash, lose the updates, lose the more rigid deadlines. Get the updates, lose some cash (Pixel), lose some compatibility and freedom (looking at you, Apple Iphone 11)...

Don't tell me to calm down, I'm not your kid. My point is don't tell people something, and give a date if they can't deliver. It has nothing to do with extra testing, they are too busy with the 7T and 7T Pro launchers to make good on their commitments, and again they should make sure they can deliver when they tell their CUSTOMERS that they are going to do something. Don't give a date, and then delay. This will be my last OnePlus device.

Hi, how are you?.
What I'm going to say now could leave me out of the closed betas program, so I will try to say as much as I can without saying much, OB1 based on Android 10 was delayed because a problem was detected that caused random bootloops and some bricks in the closed beta number 4, the problem It's under investigation (At the moment there doesn't seem to be a clear way to reproduce it, as you will know this makes it more difficult to solve it). The developer team and the people in charge of the testers team decided to delay the launch, they say it's better to wait one, two, three weeks or the time it takes to solve the problem, instead of launching the OTA and hours later "endure" the storm that may arise in the forums, obviously that angers some users and I completely understand it when I see it from their perspective, but the users should think about this, there are currently two possible situations:
- OTA with bootloops and bricks = angry people asking why OnePlus doesn't test the things before release the update.
- Delayed OTA = Angry people asking why OnePlus takes so long.
OnePlus loses in both situations..
I'm not here to defend OnePlus, just like you some things also bother me, but we must be realistic and see things from another perspective, I tried to be as clear as possible, and I hope it has been useful!.
Have a good day :fingers-crossed:.
