Long exposure photography - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

I have tried multiple apps on my 6GB variant of the Zenfone Max Pro M1 but no app allows to take long exposures. Does anybody have a solution?
Note- Camera2api is enabled.

OpenCamera, Footej Camera workes for me. I personally used OpenCamera, but I've moved to Footej Camera recently for better UI. This picture was shot with OpenCamera.

I have tried both apps but the shutter speed does not go beyond half a second.
I want to take 10-20 second exposures.

Ah I didn't read that your device is the 6GB varian.. Mine's 4GB. I have no idea whether there's a difference or not, sorry.

[Q] camera app better then stock samsung

I want to root my note 3 knox can goto hell! the only thing stopping me is that i take a ton of photos. I was wondering for those that have rooted there note 3's is the cm camera okay or is there a 3rd party app that will beat out the stock camera?
Rooting doesn't have anything to do with the camera. You will still have a same stock camera if you need it.

Not Rooted, but I am a photographer, so i'll comment on the 3rd party apps
Camera FV-5
ProCapture
CameraZoom FX
These are the more 'professional' camera apps. Personally I use FV5 and Procapture a lot, Zoom is my backup.
Just keep in mind they don't have the Stabilisation option that Stock has for night shots. But you get a lot more options in return, amongst which are shutter speed and ISO.
you can try Lenovo camera app in Themes and Apps secrion, or use DSLR camera apps.

So, we should use Stabilisation for NightShots mostly, right ?
Galaxy S3 had also few other nice modes, like Sunset. It took beautiful sunset photos, much better then Note3. Or maybe I should still experiment with the camera.
BTW, I do use 3rd party camera apps (same as yours), plus SnapIt.

Stabilisation was meant purely for low-light shots. Doesn't mean we can't use it creatively, but that was what Samsung intended it for. It even says so when you activate it.

Which settings can you change with 3rd party camera apps on Z5?

Hi,
I know that photos are limited to 8MP but what kind of settings exactly and within which range can you apply? Iso range and steps? Shutter speed range and steps? Can you change shutter and iso at the same time? Do the apps adhere to these settings or is there some kind of built in Sony override? Shutter lag?
Can all of the 3rd party camera apps change the same settings or do some have more options, better quality?
Is it possible to have some kind of predictive focus like with the new X series?
Thanks a lot.

Apparently, Camera FV-5 now supports 23MP on the Z5.

After seeing this, I reinstalled and can confirm. FV-5 does now take photos at full 23mp resolution.

Yes it does. But slow shutterspeed still 2,1 mp. Although u can choose a preset shutterspeed on 23mp.
ISO is not adjustable at preset shutterspeed but it is when using custom shutterspeed time (2,1mp)
I think atm this is the best app available for those who want a bit more functionality (Camera2 API) then point and shoot.
For further improvement, Sony should fix their API as it seems incomplete to me.
BTW about predictive focus, there's object tracing focus in Stock Sony camera app. It just isn't as fast as shown in commercials but that will be the case with Xperia x too.
Commercials lie.

So far every camera app I've tried has shutter lag, and it's worse because the camera focuses first when you press the shutter. Stock app is fastest if you use shutter button and half-press to focus first, but it still skips a frame from the moment you press the shutter. The other option... is Facebook messenger which probably just captures a frame from the live feed.
Great that Camera FV-5 has full-res now, wonder how they achieved it.
The Xperia X has a new algorithm that makes things more efficient, and this may also involve the hardware as well. Why couldn't Sony implement this sooner? My friends who have owned Z1 and Z3 say they have shutter lag as well.
At least on my Z5 Premium max resolution on FV-5 is still 8MP. I don't understand what you guys are talking about. Do you have your phones rooted?
I just reinstalled FV-5 a few times. FV-5 claims my phone supports RAW, but after selecting PNG as the file format, the app crashed and wouldn't load anymore. Resetting the phone didn't help. Only reinstalling the app helped.
FV-5 is still completely unusable. I managed to focus a few times and even managed to took one picture. After that FV-5 has not been able to focus and refuses to take any pictures. All it can do is crash.
I still haven't found even one functioning 3rd party camera app for my Z5 Premium.
Ive found that opencamera, manual camera, camera-FV5 have working manual controls
Personally i prefer camera-FV5 As it doesnt oversharpen as much as Manual camera

Whether it works or not almost surely depends on the firmware version.
Which firmware version do you have?

Based on your suggestion, i tried Open Camera. This is the first time i have full manual control on my Z5 Premium over shutter speed and ISO. Shutter speed is controllable up to 1/10s and ISO between 50 -3200. AF is a problem on this app also, but at least it doesn't crash all the time. I will test this app more.
I remember trying out Open Camera and numerous other camera apps last Christmas. None of the apps worked back then, so at least some positive signs can be seen.

Can you elaborate on the available shutter speed steps in-between 1/10 and 1/4000 or whatever the highest is? Can ISO and shutter be adjusted at the same time? What do you mean with AF problems and crashes?

On Open Camera fastest available shutter is 1/10500s. Both shutter speed and ISO can be very finely controlled. There are more available shutter speeds and ISOs than cameras usually have. Yes, ISO and shutter speed can be adjusted at the same time. Open Camera is a free app, so everybody with a Z5 can experiment with it.
Open Camera does not crash like FV-5 does, but physical shutter button (half-pressing) cannot be used for AF. It tries to focus but never locks, as it will just pump the focus aimlessly. When pressing the shutter button fully (or hitting the shutter button on screen), it seems to focus before taking a picture. Weird behavior.
here is the Camera FV-5 on Z5p .185 firmware
Ok. Now we are getting somewhere. My Camera Fv-5 version is 3.15.1. That's the newest version i can find. Where have gotten the 3.2 version? Maybe this is a regional thing.

So, basically with open camera we can finally fine tune the iso and shutter speed simultaneously and have full manual control and autofocus working - albeit at 8MP maximum (and on the latest firmware)?
But camera fv-5 can now do the full resolution but can't focus or take a picture? Someone needs to find a way to combine both of these apps...and add longer shutter speeds than 1/10th. That'll be great.

With Open Camera we can control ISO and shutter speed simultaneously. Autofocus certainly does not work properly. With the physical shutter button autofocus is impossible. I just restarted my phone, and now touch focus seems to work. Before the restart, touch focus stopped functioning early on (no focus lock confirmation, even though it looked it focused). So things really aren't smooth.
Open Camera clearly uses only contrast detection auto focus, as it goes through the full focus range every time it focuses. So the focusing is slow by today's standards. Also the shutter lag is even worse than with Sony's own app.

Google Camera on Le Pro 3 x722 - How good is Video recording?

Hi everyone! I'm new here.
I was interested in this phone (x722) because its crazy cheap for what it offers, but at the same time I am interested in a phone with a good video recording (with stabilization) so before buying I wanted to check.
I was wondering if anyone having the x722 and having installed a custom rom and the GCam port, could tell me how it stabilizes, in which settings (4k, 1080) and if its possible to record 1080/60fps videos aswell?
If some nice person around here would do some test and check if it stabilizes video well and can record 1080/60 it would be great.
Thanks a lot in advance! Hope to see some useful replies
I don't have proof, but people like the camera when they're using it with the modded Gcam. 60fps recording should work with modded Gcam, but it doesn't work normally, i.e. with the stock camera or OpenCamera, despite giving you the 60fps recording option. The IMX298 takes decent 60fps, nothing special. About on par with the iPhone 6. But I don't think you get video stabilization at all. You'll have to stabilize it yourself in Google photos or something.
Source: I owned a Zenfone 3, which has the same sensor.

The OP3T has pretty good electronic stabilization and uses the same IMX298 sensor aswell, so its definitely not a sensor problem in your Zenfone.
The LeEco pretty much has the same capabilities as the OP3/3T, it should be perfectly doable
I don't know, I guess the app would have to give you the option for stabilization. I just tested video recording on my phone and it doesn't have stabilization. I used Open Camera. I'm not rooted so I can't try the modded Gcam.

What is the best video camera app for axon 7?

I am looking for a camera app that can utilize the axon 7's 60fps at 1080p and 120fps at 720p, so far it doesnt matter what app ive tried (on oreo stock a2017u) every app only actually records at 30fps, ideally it would be something like open camera where I can manually change the bitrate shutter speed iso etc.
Im on the stock oreo rom but if needed I can install Lineage os, (but i would rather not)

Stock camera app? I haven't seen any other app so far which can actually utilize 60fps and slowmo. It's ZTE's fault for their weird camera driver programming.

the issue is that the stock camera app is just so... mediocre, to say the least, th camera quality is a sold 6/10 but could be sooo much better q.q
I wonder does it need Camera2 API?
I just shot a little test with Snap Camera HDR then checked with an editor app and it was about 43 fps but when I hard switched it to 60 fps and tried to shoot it failed.
It's still my favourite camera app.

I couldnt get any apps to shoot at 60fps+ regardless of camera api2 support or not, I was experiencing the same thing with snap camera hdr, regardless if the bit rate was 20 or 200Mbits/s and regardless of encoder highest I could get was that 43 fps, even on 720p.
Hello
I am usin OpenCamera
blue icon
It has everything. you can change Bitrates, resolutions, wide array of settings.
IMHO must have app. For videos i choose that.
Check it out and let me know howw well i have have helped you and how this is the solution to camera XD (joking a little bit) But yes,its the Best in my opinion. i use it. (axon 7 4k at 80Mb/s is amazing...)
I'll be honest, Open Camera has potential but it's never good enough. I try it occasionally and then uninstall. It has weird eccentricities but the biggest one is often the preview is quite different to the captured image.
Snap Camera HD shats all over it in so many ways.

Gcam?

Just wondering if there is a version of gcam that can be installed? And where do you check for development and updates these days? Had a Pixel for so long I've no idea where to go!!
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
considering the fact that the 8 Pro is one of the two phones in the world that uses the IMX 689 sensor, it'll take some time for developers to make a proper port for this phone.
Any luck?
I'm using GCam_7.3.018_Urnyx05-v1.7-fix.apk from https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-urnyx05/#apk1475 and it works well so far.

That means I have no luck using ultrawide and tele lens with GCAM apps...

I really hope we will see a stable version of GCam working with all Oneplus 8 Pro cameras.
I personally think there is a lot of potential in that IMX 689 sensor.
I am still thinking there should be some real use of this strange photochrom camera as well.
And may be a nice manual PRO VIDEO mode as well :fingers-crossed:
Most probably I will get the Filmic Pro anyway soon.
I only just installed GCam yesterday after reading this thread .. lol.
So far played with the different modes (not lenses/cameras) but the night mode seems really good. The downside (if I can call it that), is that it appears that Gcams ability to take HDR photos vs stock app's ability, Gcam's takes much longer to process before storing? Like as you take the shot, there is noticeable processing time, vs. the stock app which seems to effectively point-shoot-store fairly quickly.

GCam has a different algorithm which processes many frames. In Pixel devices, there is a dedicated chip (pixel visual core) which performs the necessary computations. In other devices, it is the main processor that has to do all the job
I played around with the GCam_7.3.018_Urnyx05-v1.8, which delivers nice results. but I noticed that the maximum resolution is 4000x3000. the stock camera goes up to 8000x6000. is there a way to activate the full resolution? in the settings it is already set to full resolution.
other than that, can anyone recommend any of the configs for this gcam? https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/configs-urnyx-02/
How does the night mode compare to the pixel 4? I imagine it would be better because of the larger sensor
