Phone hard-bricked while OTA update .326 - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

I downloaded the OTA update released on 04/09/2018 today and while installing it my phone just turned off and is not responding to anything. My battery was around 40% while installing the update.
1. volume+down button, 30 secs holding all combinations of switches, but nothing seems to work
2. charging for 2 hours straight, still nothing, no vibration, no light cue nothing
so finally thought something was wrong with hardware so i would just have to go to the nearest service center i.e. 100kms as I live in a rural place. But then after connecting it to usb i am able to hear a device getting connected to the laptop and windows shows as qhsusb_bulk is ready.
The device is completely stock, no root, no TWRP, nothing done. So i can claim warranty i suppose. But its a hassle to get to the service center.
Funny thing is that, although the developer options were enabled, the usb debugging wasnt enabled. So cant start adb either.
I don't know the exact issue, but its not even going into recovery mode by pressing volume down and power button. So i just dont know what to do other than going to the svc. Can someone help me avoid the trip to svc somehow? If nothing can be done then the svc trip is inevitable, i understand that. Also state if the process will void warranty.

Go to service centre incase you do something wrong. dont risk your money

You my friend have hard bricked your phone. It is possible to revive it but you need the mmcblk file and a lot of fiddling. Better you take it to service center and tell them that it got corrupted during FOTA update

Yup. Got it. I was gonna ask for the mmcblk file too from someone and then try the hboot. But holding the volume down/up and charging isnt working either. So, taking advice from aftab and you too it will be just better to go to the SVC.
Thanks for replying so quick.

For once, keep holding down powerbutton for 20-30 sec and release. Only power button nothing else.
If that does not work then go to service center.

I had a similar experience. The morning after I updated the phone, I could not turn it on. I tried everything. Then I tried ejecting the sim slot and put it back. No change. I left it like that for 10 mins and I tried again. It booted up with no problems. Gave me quite a scare.

Bricked/Damaged Phone ??

Hi, i bought an HTC Dream/Google G1/T-Mobile G1. I bought as faulty and asked the guy what did it had. He said he needed to flash and update software. So i bought it thinking that if that's the problem i'd solve it and end up with an Android phone. I paid €50 for it. Thing is i can't do anything to the phone. I plugged the battery, pushed power and it gives the normal vibrate and then nothing, the screen doesn't even light up. I have to take the battery out to power off the phone then. If i plug the USB, it lights the red LED, but no recognition of the phone by the PC, turn it on again...the same.
I've searched the forum, top to bottom, and i've tried almost everything to try and make something out of my beautyfull brick. Keys combination, *.img to SD, haven´t tried throwing it to the wall, but i'm almost there.
If i could even get to bootloader... I have a Diamond and flashed it numerous times and never had a glitch.
Can you guys help out ? Please, i've searched the forum, read almost every post about bricked phones, etc...
Sounds like they may have flashed the wrong firmware file or its physically damaged and they lied to you.
I am pretty sure it needs re-flashed with a jtag interface if it's only a software issue. Because if the recovery image is intact it will still say "t-mobile G1" and be stuck in a boot loop.
Have you tried to start the phone to fastboot mode(hold down the back button and press power), or recovery(hold home and press power) ?
If you can't get into either of those you either need to find someone with a jtag adapter or get your money back because it's dead.
Thanks for the reply.
I tried all of that... . How on earth will i find someone with a jtag adapter, at least in a nearby area... guess i have nice brick then. I read somewhere here on xda of a shop in India that recovers the phone but its way to far for me to send the phone, pay the fix and they send it back!!! Well i guess thats it, i got screwed...

Stuck at "Phone ! Computer" screen, cant get to recovery/download mode

So yesterday my Kies said there was a new firmware for my SGS, and after backing up my data with kies, i started updating it. The update got stuck at 71% for 2 hours, so i decided to disconnect the cable and recover the phone afterwards. But i cant get to connection mode or download mode, I've read lots of threads in this forum, tried many combinations, tried to release power when the icon disappears, but nothing... The image with the phone, triangle and computer appears all the time, and i haven't seen anything other than this.
Also, my computer doesn't recognize the phone when connected since i tried to update the firmware.. I have also tried with Odin, but i got the same result.
So, anyone can help me? I won this phone in a christmas contest, and they haven't delivery the warranty yet, so im kinda stuck.
thanks for your time reading this.
You could try this:

Read the sticky topic about JIG/JTAG.
GL.
Hum, i was trying to avoid that method, but i guess i will give it a try later. First i will try to get my warranty.

The same thing happened to me a month or so ago, I managed to get it in to download mode by removing the battery, putting it back in and being very quick with my fingers to get it in to download then flashed with odin.
You backed up your data did you back up your original rom by any chance ??

Remove your battery for 10 min. then try again if u hadn't solved 3 button combination before

I don't think so.. :/
As Samsung broke the phone i would take it to a Samsung service centre before getting involved in warranty breaking flashing .

very good point.
If you want to fix it yourself the mentioned battery pull will probably work.
(pull the battery out, wait a few seconds, put it back in, voldown-home-power and you should be in download)
I had a similar problem some time ago (Phone ! PC screen)... I disconnected the battery for half a day came home from uni and put the battery into the phone, while holding ALL (hard) buttons at the same time... then, download mode actually went through

Ok guys, thanks for the support. I will keep trying, and if it fails, i will get my warranty and go to samsung.
Get ur phone into a black screen no icon so basically completely off then hold the download mode 3 button combo u phone should then turn on in download mode
To sumerise
Use the download combo to turn on ur phone basically its how I got my butt saved when I first got this icon thing
I only had the phone a week so I was very happy to save it

If you remove the battery for some time(10 min.) and you still can't access download-mode then Sbl on your device has been corrupted while kies did flash the ROM, take it to a samsung service center and get it fixed.
You probably have done this but ensure your usb cable is REMOVED until you get the download mode working.
Personally I'd use the jig. As soon as you have that jig built you can have your phopne working again (and updated) in less than 30mins. Who knows how long it will take the service centre to fix it.

Hard bricked nexus 4 help please?

So last night I hard bricked my nexus 4. its rooted, with cyanogenmod 10.1 ROM, and ive never had any issues with this phone. I have no idea what happened, but I sent a text message to someone, and it powered itself down. it was fully charged when this happened, so I know its not the battery. ive done some research, and its a true hard brick. no bootloader, no recovery, I just get a red/orange flashing light if I hold down the power button. google said im still under warranty, and they will still replace it even with it being rooted. My question is, is it possible to fix without having to get a replacement, or JTAG? If anyone has had any success, please help.
And like I said, I was only sending a text. I have no idea why it bricked, it restarts itself once in a while randomly, but this time it didn't turn back on.
Try plugging it into the wall for about 5 minutes then try turning it on again. If it doesn't work, RMA it. Why would you risk your warranty and JTAG it?

No, I DONT want to JTAG it. im looking for alternatives. if its possible to fix a hard brick without JTAG or using my warranty. If at all possible, I want to fix it, because I have a lot of pictures and everything on there that I would like to get out of it. I don't want to lose them. JTAG is my last resort if I cant get it replaced, but they said they would. I want my stuff off it though.

ok so if the nexus 4 wont go into download mode, or fastboot, or anything else, I have no choice but to RMA it right? cuz the ONLY response im getting from it is a red/orange flashing light when I hold down the power button. other than that, nothing happens.

Did you press volume down first and then the power button both for a few seconds to get into fastboot mode?
Nope. The ONLY time it has any sign of life is if the charger is connected to it and I hold down the power button. If it's NOT connected to the charger, pressing the power button does absolutely nothing. I can't go into recovery mode, download mode, or the bootloader. I've tried charging it overnight, (and part of the next day) left it off the charger for over a week, it shows up as "Qualcomm-something" when I plug it into a computer, but I can't do ANYTHING with it connected to a computer either, and after I got my replacement, I tried taking out the battery and putting it back in. There was still no change......I've literally done EVERYTHING short of JTAG. Trust me, I searched all over google, and XDA, and tried everything. As far as I know, hard bricking is rare, but it happens. And it just happened, to happen to me. So unless there's a solution someone knows of that I didn't just list, my last option is JTAG.
sinndissension said:
yep. ive done EVERY combination of holding down the buttons, no response. when I plug it in to a laptop, the laptop beeps, like the USB connection sound, but the nexus doesn't show up on the computer. I know the computer recognized what kind of phone it was, cuz the first time I plugged it in, I got a pop up message saying "installing qualcom drivers", or along the lines of that. other than that, NOTHING has worked. If theres ANY fix for this, id like to give it a try, cuz ALL my stuff is on there.

Try charging it for a while and try again in a few hours or better yet tomorrow. Sometimes that helps bro. If that doesn`t help you`ll have to take it in for repair an maybe they can salvage your data if they are wiiling to do that. Good luck.
I think it's just your battery(RLOD) instead of a brick.
See this:

I wouldn't be worried about your files stored on your phone because I think Google has more work to do than search in peoples pictures. What I would worry about is your warranty since you have a custom rom, unlocked bootloader and root...

Well, found out it WAS a hard brick. Google replaced it with my warranty. For some reason they returned my money before I even got the chance to send the broken nexus 4 back. Didn't even mail it. So I'm assuming I don't have to send it back. So I'm gonna JTAG the hard bricked nexus, and hopefully it'll work again.
Thanks everyone for your help.

You may not be doing it right. When I get the flashing light on mine it means I forgot to let go of the power button fast enough. When it vibrates, let go of power button immediately but keep pressing the volume. Does your phone vibrate a few seconds prior to the flashing light?

Weird. I've had the "red light of death" 2 hours ago because i didn't put the phone on the charger and it had like 4%. Pressing Volume down + power got it to enter fastboot and i was able to start the phone normally so it's charging booted

Ok, I got mine replaced because it was still under warranty, and normally, the manufacturer cant tell its rooted or unlocked if its a true hard brick, (rooting and unlocking voids your warranty.) So i got mine replaced.
If your NOT under warranty still, your ONLY option if you want to fix it is JTAG. Google it, it costs about 50 bucks on average, but its cheaper than a Nexus 4. Research JTAG before you try it though. Or you have to buy a new one. I still have my only one, and i basically use it for parts for my newer N4.
Is it a true HARD brick, or just a soft brick?

its a hard brick. ive tried it all bought a new battery installed it etc. ive looked up jtag and i have the money but idk if i should do it. do you recomend it? i have no experience doing anything like it and im planning on getting the iphone 6 in the fall but i cant stand not having a phone till then especially since high school starts soon.
But the reason im sure its a hard brick is cuz when it shut down the battery was like 50 and charging and it froze for 25 seconds or so then shut down and refuses to boot or show any signs of life now except a blinking or solid red light but its not the red light of death because i replaced the battery therefore i came to the conclusion that it is hard bricked.
i know ive said alot of unecessary information but my question is do you think i should buy the jtag thing? do you reckon its easy to do? or maybe i could pay an experienced professional to do it?
thanks for the reply btw

OPT Volume UP button stuck in pressed position -> device not booting

Hello,
I have a problem with my OPT. The "Volume UP" button stuck in pressed position.
Because of the battery the phone went off but after charging it want start again.
I guess because of the pressed Volume UP + Power nothing happens.
After more than one week of fighting with the support (the issue was always escalated to the next level, remote session, bla bla bla.. but nothing happened) the problem finally was redirected to the "RRR" repair and return... and now I thing that at some point I will have a chance to send this brick back.
However, Is there a way to get my data out of it before I send the phone back?
If it would be out of warranty I would just unscrew the plastic battery cover and push the button back...
Best
dim
No Ideas?
I don't need a step by step how to.
just, is it possible? and if so, give me some buzz words (toolkits, what to check and so on)
For example If I plug it in my PC I see in the device manager QHSUSB_BULK as unknown device (good sign) but for now it refuses to install the driver from https://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
There is a sign of live.
when I let the phone rest for several hours and then press power, there is a short vibrating response and I the screen shows for less than a second the fastboot logo. Then the screen gets dark.
To repeat this I need to wait several hours.
any help appreciated
I think this is a hardware issue, send it to repair

Thanks for the answer,
and yes, it is a hardware problem. The question was more like: is there a way to start or backup/reset the phone from this state.
Like I said, the phone is recognised by the mac and PC (showing up as QHSUSB_BULK)
Theoretically with pressed Vol UP button it should start in to fastboot mode.
I managed to install the driver on the PC but the phone is not recognised by fastboot
same on mac.
So if some one has an Idea how to get to the data in this phone please help

I don't think you can back up from that stage. As it is a button related issue, I don't think OnePlus will erase any data on the device. Contact OnePlus and ask them if they can make a back up. Submit a ticket on the OnePlus support page.

S10 Plus Possibly Hard Bricked?

Hi All,
I was trying to flash the latest firmware for my device (G9750ZCU2ASG4) and during the odin process, my computer restarted which failed the update halfway through. I rebooted the computer, tried again, and it was trying to establish a connection for a really long time, so I disconnected my phone from the USB port on my computer, and held Power and Volume Down to try and force reboot the phone. I was going to try and go back into download mode to restart the process. My phone mentioned something about needing to do an emergency recovery, but I continued to hold down the power and volume down keys and then everything went black on the phone.
I've tried multiple USB cords, all of the button commands known for the device, and have even tried to perform the emergency mode recovery on my device, but it seems like it's in some sort of locked state; What I mean is the phone is stuck on a black screen. I can't "boot" into recovery or into download mode. The phone doesn't even vibrate when I hold the power button or power and down to try and force reboot it. Odin doesn't recognize the phone when I plug it into the computer nor does the device manager on my windows computer.
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of issue or any idea of what else I can do to try and get into download mode to flash my firmware again? All help, suggestions, or comments regarding this are much appreciated.
Dead battery may be part of the problem
i had a similar problem with lg g3 some years ago, if your pc at least detects it as unrecognized device you might be able to use qualcomm drivers and some software to rewrite everything though i dont know if this exists for samsung. i think it showed up as qhsusb_bulk in device manager
It's basically soft bricked. You can use Odin and flash the official firmware and it should unbrick it.
The official route is to use emergency recovery in Samsung's Smart Switch software.

Yes use smart switch and emergency recovery.

Did you get this resolved? if so, how? My phone got bricked in the middle of update through Smart Switch. Black (seem to be off) screen. Hey man, unfortunately my phone was absolutely trashed and I had to get a new one entirely. Same symptoms as yours, no button combinations worked. I even tried to let the battery drain and charge to turn it back on and it failed. I guess now we know that there is definitely a way to hard brick this phone.

wow sorry to hear that. How did Samsung handle warranty? Mine got bricked in the middle of update through Smart Switched. The phone wasn't rooted or anything. Taking it to uBreakifix today.

Well, if you have a warranty and are unrooted, you're good to go. They should just replace it for you. However, I did not have a warranty as I have an international version, and I had to just eat my loss with a side of humble pie.

I was unrooted was just doing OTA using Smart Switch. I hope they don't make excuses and replace it. Will report back.

so took it ubreakifx as it was the only option on Samsung website when I clicked on service. It made me to make an appointment with ubreakifix but It turned out to be completely useless! They looked at it and said probably motherboard need to be replaced so advised me to call Samsung and send it to them for repair. Talked to Samsung and they sent me shipping label so now the device is with them for "repair". I wonder if they will send a replacement device or actually repair. Will report back in a week or so once I get it back
Got the phone back a few days ago. They replaced PMA motherboard and the phone is back to normal. IMEI remained the same. No cost to me as it was covered by warranty
@elliwigy I kinda wonder if since the board was replaced and your IMEI is still the same if there might be something left behind from the engineer firmware that would help with gaining root. Im guessing it was probably fully wiped but who knows.

Same issue as you guys. Odin update failed and gave me the "recover via Smart Switch" language. Hold down power to restart the phone and screen wouldn't light up again. Cannot believe how fragile Samsung phones are. No actual recovery mode
Do you not get Updates like us with carrier phones on an Unlocked phone?? Never use Smart Switch for Updates.
I like to flash mine with unlocked firmware and never bother with carrier stuff. In any case, I am at the Samsung 837 store in New York because that’s a hard brick. Samsung say they replaced the screen, board, and battery under warranty
