Project treble - LG V20 Questions & Answers

There are tons of android 8 and 9 GSI ROMs out there for devices with treble support. I know LG has decided not to add project treble support for the V20. Now, I wonder if any developer is working on this for this lovely phone. It will be nice to keep this phone for some time as long as there is is possibility to update the software to newer versions.

Your above quote has nothing to do with the LG V20.
If manufacturers shipped devices with 7.0 it is not required for them to add treble support in a future update. Your best bet is to wait and see what happens with AOSP roms. Not promising anything.

Uh they specifically asked if any devs are working on treble for the v20. which is possible seeing as we added support for it on the v30.

The v30 isn't the v20.. right now x86cpu has it mostly working, but there's issues with the camera not playing well with the vndk (treble) restrictions and needing things on /system. He's been blocked on this for a bit, but sit tight and just generally watch the LineageOS 15.1 thread.

If x86cpu succeeds with the V30, I guess it should not be too difficult to get it done for the V20 since each OEM usually has similar file structures for their phones.

Let me put it another way, it IS done except the camera isn't playing nice. Read a few pages from the lineage thread starting about here.

Apparently, LG v20 is A only. But it should work. Can't comment on whether the camera would work or not though.
https://www.getdroidtips.com/lg-v20-android-9-0-pie/
I tested my lg v20 by using getprop ro.treble.enabled and it showed "true". Also tried the treble checker app and it is A only. not A/B.
Nevermind. It only appeared as A only when i was on RR 6. But that doesnt exactly makes it A

Project Treble for Mi6

So as most of you probably are aware of the OnePlus fans made a petition for Project Treble but they got the response that they didn't have a partition for it. We on the other hand have the /cust partition.
Therefore we have made a petition for Project Treble

I doubt this can even work, because MIUI changes Android in a lot of places. So I dont think that MIUI can be "placed upon stock Android" partition with all the changes it has.

Well, they will have to make it work with devices launching with Oreo. So Mi 7 for example.

There is no reason to do it for Mi6 though (I mean Xiaomi doesn't have one of course).

They don't have to do it as the device didn't launch with Oreo. It would however be nice to have and we already have a partition of the right size anyway.
The huge amount of work to bring treble to mi6 makes 100% sure that never will happen.
If they do it for all new devices (and they must do), there is less work to do to implement it on older devices like MI6. Expect for specific hardware/features, MIUI source code is the same for all devices.
But does Google FORCES the device manufactures to use trebble? All I read was, that Google works together with them for the Devices which comes out with Oreo.
Google Force manufacturer to use treble for devices that will be sold with Oreo or later. For device that came out with Nougat, Treble is optional.

Signed, even if I doubt we will ever get PT for Mi6, it is always good to show that there is a community of enthusiasts and devs who care about this (same as with Kernel sources).

I see, it might actually be possible for our device to support treble. I've been reading on this topic for the past few days but there is not much information on how he managed to do it except changing the mount point of a partition. Its all a bit to blurry for me to start porting but maybe some other developer can do it.
It looks like xiaobai was able to get treble working ?

Android 9.0 pie for lg k20 plus?

Any luck with a build?
Guess that's a no
bump
Woot woot
Our guy @Travisholt92 has made a few posts regarding his intent to get Pie for the K20 Plus, with a possibility of skipping porting Pie altogether to get a working ROM on Android 10. But as far as I know he needs to wait for some official releases on similar devices in order to build something that'll work on the K20. Plus some set backs have caused delays needing some equipment to build and test the ROM, esp with 10 requiring Treble compatibility. So, couple that with waning activity on here and people switching to other phones, we may never see P or Q on this K.

Once I order a back camera and H flex ribbon for the rear speaker. I can start working on this device again. Lately I've been working on the Stylo 3 plus which is in the same product family
Project update?
Is there any updates on the project? I hope we see most features working..
Last rom upgrade had a lot of missing features

I wouldn't hold my breath for a Pie ROM for the K20. I'm pretty sure Travisholt92, the last remaining developer on these 'rums, has either moved on to another device or is working on porting Android 10, or both.

Lineage ROM support dropped ... what a pity ! Is there an alternative ?

Does anyone know what ROM to install on a LG G6 to keep it safe for at least 2-3 years ?
A few months ago, I bought a second hand LG G6 H870 for its camera quality !
At that time, I thought that I could keep it "updated" at least for safety patches with a LINEAGE ROM beyond "the usual 2-years limit" more or less granted by sellers and Brands.
Unfortunately, Lineage DEV dropped their support for this phone ...
In other words, I was cheated by LG ... and i was cheated by LINEAGE ....
Who's next ?
Help me make sense !
You can use the camera even if you don't have the last update
You can simply use stock rom, debloat it and you will see, it's quite good experience. You can use Gcam also, there is thread with the best version in this forum

Yeah we still have one major update and a few security patches left from LG. It's not like the phone is completely abandoned.
Also, yup this man is right, you can perfectly use GCAM on stock software.

What makes you say that?
Lineage 16.0 is currently being developed for all LG msm8996 devices (g5,g6,v20).

The info is on the official Wiki : https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/h870
Of course, I don't talk about any Lineage roms eventually and unofficially developped on xda ... by a "lone" developper ...
I hate to say so, but if the official Lineage OS (or any other official and alternative ROM to the stock one) is droppred after 2 years, it defeats the purpose .... if the game is to extend the support for expensive gadgets ... and break the commercial practices BRANDS enforce on consumer ....

That page probably says that because in the past G6 was officially supported (I didn't check, but probably Lineage 14?).
Anyway, like I said Lineage 16.0 is being developed. It's not official, but you can't expect it to be when it's not quite ready yet.
Development has been slow on these LG devices. For me personally, on G5, it's not been an attractive option, but it's getting there
and likely will be official when it's ready.
Edit: It's mainly x86cpu which is developing now https://review.lineageos.org/q/owner:x86cpu.
So you see, I'm not talking about all those random roms that are about. Although some of their work probably will help.

Thanks Silver Wx,
You seem to understand very well what is going on with BRANDS such as LG, SAMSUNG, ONEPLUS, APPLE, and whatever **** !
Yes stock rom is a good experience ! Except when security support is dropped after 2 years ...
In case you missed my point, LINEAGE OS "was" a warranty a +3-5 years supported phone ...
What kind of buyer are you Silver Wx ?
Every 2 years, you buy a new phone ?
Go back to school ....

Purpose of the GSI

Hi there,
A GSI sounds like a nice idea to me. I'd be really happy with a vanilla Android system since I don't really care about any vendor specific UI modifications.
However, the exact purpose/functionality of the GSI's is not perfectly clear to me.
If your phone is treble compliant, is it possible to just start using a GSI instead of waiting for the manufacturers Android version? Is a vanilla GSI going to be a complete system that has phone, connectivity and other functionalities as per usual? I mean, are there things that are KNOWN NOT to work?
I have Motorola ZOOM, BTW. Anyody out there running a vanilla GSI on it, by any chance?
Noa

This is what interests me, too.
GSI's "should basically work" on just about any device these days, as long as it isn't a brand new SoC or has some unique hardware - Phhusion has been really committed to compatibility, along with community contributions.
However, expect some things to be broken. For example, on my Poco F1, loudspeaker is not working at all (I believe this is a common issue, I vaguely recall it but am currently researching). But everything else so far works fine. This is likely because the Poco is an SDM845, very mature, and is also 99% identical to the Mi 8 and Mi Mix 2S (iirc) so even though its not a mainstream device it also shares a lot of hardware with other SDM845 devices (e.g. modem).
To answer your question, these are the only two things I know of so far that are apparently impossible to fix on a GSI:
1) MiraCast (wireless display)
2) File-Based Encryption (FBE) cannot work. If your stock vendor is set to this (many/most modern Android devices are), you will need to either mod it to disable encryption or change it to the classical Full-Disk Encryption (FDE).
Hopefully I don't find too many more things that are not fixable...

What's the most stable Android 9, 10, or 11 for our V20s?

What's the most stable Android 9, 10, or 11 for our V20s?
You may want to get on the V20 group on Telegram and ask there since there isn't a whole lot of activity around here any more.
I should also emphasize that if you are using your V20 as a phone and have a carrier that soon requires VoLTE (this includes the entire U.S.), you should stay away from all non-stock-based custom ROMs like anything related to AOSP or LineageOS because those will likely never have VoLTE working.

Thank you, I did ask there and it looks like AO is the only OREO option with VoLTE and there doesn't appear to be any Pie or greater option. :-(
Sounds right to me, unfortunately. Only the Korean models have stock Pie, but they have almost zero compatible LTE bands for U.S. carriers. There was an attempt to convert Pie to the H990 models, but cellular data never worked, so that may have been a dead end.

Exactly. For this reason, Android 8 is the winner on V20.
