Cellular strength and throughput - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Real Life Review

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the 's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.

In places where I would normally get 4G connection with my S8 Plus, I tend to get maximum 3G bars. Not too sure why, yes it's the same sim just one time in the S8 Plus and another time in my Mate 20 Pro

Anybody else tested this?

So far signal has been better than I saw on my oneplus6. I even managed 183Mbps download on EE 4g

That's awesome. Thanks

Same here
I hope next update will fix that problem!

sought this thread out because I wanted somewhere to comment on the Mate 20 Pro signal strength. Often times I hear phone X has way better reception than phone Q. I go through a lot of cell phones (I have a disease, lol) and have used T-Mobile in the US for about 10 years. In all that time I have never really seen one phone be noticeably better than another phone. Where I'd have good reception with one phone, another phone would be about the same. Where it's bad signal in a certain area, other phones have bad reception as well. With this phone I have noticed significant improvement in signal at many places I normally am. My home has always been great but I've noticed at work and at a few friend's homes that where I had no signal, I suddenly have good to great reception. It's weird, and I don't know if TMobile all of the sudden put up a bunch of towers in the last couple months, but I'm grateful that I see the difference. Especially since I'm without wifi calling in this country.

I saw some friends who owned a Mate 20 Pro and Signal reception on their Mate 20 Pro compared to my iPhone 8 Plus was much stronger

Yeah, very happy with cellular strength. Incredible experience.

Anyone here know what TRP is for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is?
https://www.signalbooster.com/blogs/news/does-smartphone-make-and-model-impact-cellular-signal
Recent tests by Ireland's communications regulator (COMREG) have shown that the Samsung Galaxy S8 has incredible reception, which is measured in TRP (Total Radiated Power). On the GSM network's 1800 band, the Galaxy S8 weighed in at 23.6 TRP (also shown as "dBm"), while the iPhone 7 only had 16.6 TRP, and the Pixel had 21.0 TRP. This means that Samsung cell phones have the strongest antenna capability. We don't exactly know how or why - maybe just due to how they design their smartphones.

Seems like there's a but of variation in that I know some phones don't support some bands that others do, as well as some areas dont support some bands that others do. For example the south in the us for att has slightly different band support from other areas despite some overlap. All this to say was this streamlined in this study? And also I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS THE CASE WITH THESE 2 PHONES. Just mentioning it as it would make a difference.
2. I just ordered this phone for Tennessee and was curious about the signal quality etc in the US. Anyone have some experience based comments?

Signal issue
Could anyone help me with my LTE signal? It keeps disconnecting and reconnecting but never actually connects...just drops data and will not come back until a reset. I have a link to a video that discribes the issue.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FwwnuwIdqnvhs1yWDjkkQHKyA-vaJA8M/view?usp=drivesdk
I've sent it to Huawei 3 times and only once did they "replace a component" and just factory reset it.

Yes everything is correct, factory reset a million times and reset network settings, no fix and airplane mode only helps for 2 minutes and disconects after.

Try using this to see if you can enable it, you might need to use ADB to allow secure settings.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zacharee1.systemuituner
Status bar icon removal
App needed: SystemUI Tuner
Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ystemuituner&rdid=com.zacharee1.systemuituner
Basic setup (taken almost verbatim from Play Store info):
1. Make sure you know how to use adb clearly! <- If you don't know to use adb, Google it!
2. Enable Android Debugging mode of your phone.
3. Run commands
- adb shell pm grant com.zacharee1.systemuituner android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
- adb shell pm grant com.zacharee1.systemuituner android.permission.PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS
- adb shell pm grant com.zacharee1.systemuituner android.permission.DUMP
4. Launch app and select which icon you want to remove. Note that unfortunately not all icons can be removed, like the unneeded VoLTE / HD system icon that always shows up unless you manually disable this feature.
5. RESTART your phone to make most of the selected icons removed.

Yes mine drops and reconnected quite often, but when I cleaned up the status bar and remove volte and decided later to respond enable it my volte and data are stable.
It was just a thought.

I see what you mean and thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately I don't think the issue is the icon, seems more hardware, but if it helped you then that's interesting.

Poor/intermittent Signal - so far so good solution

There are a few thread's already on the site about signal problems with the X1 however many are quite old and I thought a specific one with a (so far so good) solution would be welcomed.
Many people have had problems with their signal being lost or being poor and there are posts on the Vodafone forums, here, as well as many other sites and many suggest they have contacted SE without much success. Mine got so bad I was ready to give up the phone and go to N97.
I had some advice from someone at a local friendly phone store about what may be the problem and he suggested (to stop me claiming on my insurance I'm sure) changing the connection settings so it only looks at GSM.....
.....I did this three days ago and since I have had no loss of signal and my signal strength has been better than ever.
To do this:
Start > settings > comm manager > settings > phone > band
Select your network type : GSM
Not sure of the significance of this change (from auto) but its worked wonders for me
Phone:
O2 UK, R3A, xperiatweak, mms changes, Dashwire, advanced config, spb galore
Good luck and I hope this works for you (let me know how it goes)
Found the same problem when I first received the phone, I too changed the band to GSM, mainly to save battery usage as 3G wasn't needed and noticed the signal is A LOT stronger...
Not noticed any downsides to disabling 3G either as my internet browsing is still very fast using Opera Mini.
maybe a stupid question: with 3g disabled, can the phone still lock in HSDPA?
i dont think so
in theory when its connected to 3g it should still have a gsm link as backup to switch to if there is a problem
still working
A week in now and the signal is still without problems and I've found the battery life of the phone is at its longest since I got the phone at the end of last year
In answer to other posts - I've remained connected to O2 UK Mobile WEb (GPRS, 3G) despite selecting GSM only
This is useful only if you don't need 3G or 3.5G... If your 3G coverage is ok, there is no trouble either... There is a huge change depending your operator and your location
i did this for a couple days and had to switch back. i've NEVER been able to connect to 3g (i have an X1i in america where the X1a is sold), but upon applying this change of setting i couldn't get HSDPA anymore and all my internet/data activities was like creeping death. i could only connect to Edge, which is practically unusable

lol are you kidding? when i'm on edge i might as well be tapping morse code across two cans with a string between them. everytime i pull up google maps on edge i might as well pay a homeless guy to steal me map pages, it would take a lot less time..... HSDPA is the complete opposite for me, everything loads almost instantly

Nexus One on 3G, not switching to HSDPA

Hi! I have been browsing the Nexus One forums for a while now, but I seem to have a strange problem.
I had a Nexus One that was working fine, but there was a piece of dust under my screen. It switched to HSDPA, and I had none of the issues that I have now. I sent it to HTC, but they didn't want to repair it, because it was rooted. I think they flashed something into the phone, because ever since the internet connection is very buggy. 3G (UMTS) didn't cause any problems then, but now if I hold my hand at the bottom of the nexus, connection indicator lowers (Cell Viewer: ranging from -1 to 8). When I hold the phone up int he air the connection varies between 14 and 24 (UMTS). The phone doesn't switch to HSDPA AT ALL!
I tried the hsxpa-tweak in build.prop, but it didn't help. I am using Cyans latest stable. I have wiped, installed stock, upgraded to cyan again, and tried staying on the stock rom, to no avail.
Is there something really stupid that I am not seeing? Or would it mean that the transporter has damaged my phone antenna by dropping it? :O
What makes you believe you're not getting HSDPA? Have you tested the actual speed of your connection? Keep in mind, on an unrooted Nexus One, your signal indicator will always show 3G even when HSDPA is active. It only shows the H when you're using a custom ROM.
Also, the signal fluctuation when covering the bottom of the phone is well documented at this point. It's normal.
HSDPA is only active when the network deems you need it, it'll just sits on 3G all other times.
Funny..I'm on HSPA all the time when on 3G..never saw UMTS not one. Yet on a cliq I saw UMTS...

I used Cell Viewer to test signal type. I was consistantly on HSDPA before it got sent in to HTC.

Too bad I'm in Europe . I changed to US, JAPAN, AUS and EURO, but it didn't help . I'll try the same with the .03 radio. I've flashed both the .03 and .04 radio's before, but not together with the instructions at the end of the mentioned thread.

gsm/3g problem - dealbreaker :(

This might force me to use samsungs dead-on-arrival-refund and switch to the both uglier and slower Desire Unless you have a solution.
The phone finds several networks where two are associated with my telecom-provider. One is old gsm and one is 3g/H. I search and manually picks out the 3g-network and gets an H-connection with 2 mbps (max for what I pay for). But this only lasts for about 10 - 20 seconds, then it falls back to the gsm-network.
So to speek, it overrides my manually selected network and uses an automatic pick and i get gsm with crappy 56 kbps.
I have done this:
1. a new sim-card (telecom sent me one)
2. Resetted the phone (samsung asked me to do this)
The problem is still there and samsung now say I should send it back to them...
But what are the odds that it will work on another device... the problem is probably a combination of phone + telenetwork. The simcard works perfectly in the same location on the Touch HD (blackstone) and the sales-dude that also claims to have an SGS with another network have no problems.
Swedish telecom-provider: TELE2
Help...! I dont wanna switch to a 9 month old desire and the desire hd looks like the specs are the same as sgs without the samoled and a too large 4,3" screen.
Have you asked the sales dude which firmware he is using? This sounds a bit software related. It can definitely be teleco, however I think you're paying a premium doing more than keeping up appearances should be important to them.

Did you try setting the phone on "WCDMA ONLY" in the network menu?
Every time the phone gets a stronger GSM signal, it will switch to gsm, just like any other phone.
Just disable GSM.
hmmm no i have not tried that... sounds quite promissing, but if it works that will result in no network at all if i go outside a 3g-area, right?
I have stock rom at eclair.xwjfb - i90000xxjf5
But where do i find this option? from a secret code?
in the network-menu i only have "use only 2g networks"
EDIT
Found this:
*#*#4636#*#* for battery and other general setttings like GSM/CDMA
Testing.....
EDIT
No change
I set it to WCDMA ONLY and tried all the other options as well. Most of them resulted in to network access.
###! this sounded so good
so all i have to do is type that number i get the option to only use 3G covarge right? is that how you did it?
Tackar!
yes but read it again - did NOT work
are you having the same problem with tele2?
Ah okey, such a shame. Nope, i'm using Halebop, but if you have this problem i might also experiance it aswell, hopefully not though..
But my phone had a really strange problem which caused me to send it back, it lost the signal completly, like i had no simcard in it. This could accur around 20min-4 hours, and i seem to be the only one affected by this.. really strange, hopefully i'll get my phone back soon without this problem, whatever it might be..
im returning it today as a d-o-a and will hopefully get a new one that works. Would really be a shame to let go of such a nice handset!
the wifi-radio cant stay connected to dynamic ips either, something that clearly works for others with sgs
Just replace it with another. I think your unit is defective.
There have been no reports of network problems with the SGS, and personally, i live in a place with terrible coverage, but when i set to WCDMA only it still somehow manages to maintain a good signal.
surely this could also be due to not all places being covered by 3g signal.
possibly but not likely sinse i can manually force it to use another network and then max out the payed bandwith of 2 mbps easily, but only for a very short period of time...
anyway, its sent away now. Hopefully they fix this fast

Please don't create multiple threads. You've already created a thread about Temple Run not working, so why not just post it there?
As long as you're getting H you should be OK. I barely ever get 3G either, I'm normally on H. From my understanding, this is effectively 3.5G.
sorry I figured they were two different topics therefore 2 different thread.

Mine shows 3G but the second i start using data and see the little arrow things it switches to H. H being HSDPA which yes is like 3.5G Now i do wanna know what the difference between G and E is... i would like to comment on G i get ~300 kbps and on E i get like 100kbps. So its faster but i guess my question is what determines it to use G over E and vice versa. At first i thought it was signal strength but according to spare parts the signal strength (dB value) is the same on both.

Your network strength determines it. If the phone gets low signal on HSPDA then it will try to switch to EGPRS, and if it can't get a good signal on that then it will go to GPRS.

Look up a few posts, ive already thought this was the deterent. But as posted a few posts ago, according to Spare parts, my single strength stays the same. Its strange. I prefer G cause its like 20 times faster then Edge xP so im trying to see if i can force it to use G instead of E since my signal strength stays the same i dont see how i couldnt.
have "H", why want "3G"?
H is 3.5G
signal changes depending on the strength, I mostly get H but it fluctuates like if you in a bus moving around different places. You can set the phone just to use G 2G signal if you wish
But for me It continues to mess up. Everytime I open the playstore data turns off and it goes on and off all of the time. Also the connectivity to simple mobile goes off and on all the time. I am really starting to regret getting simple mobile
it depends on bandwidth available in your cell, so if network doesn't have BW for you on higher type of network you contracted with (4G, 3.5) it switches to lower type (gprs which is 2.5G)
Does anybody know how simple mobile works with Porting a number over to them. doesn't matter who whcih carrier....you are in limbo during porting. mine took only about 12 hrs. you'll see a network but can't use your phone until your imei/phone is registered to the new network. doesn't matter what your phone os is neither. porting time depends on how quickly your old carrier disconnects you and your new carrier connects you. works the same way with any phone number.
Thanks. When I got up and checked my phone this morning, I had my number and calls worked.

LTE 4G problem! No automatic switching from 2G/3G to 4G network during data flow

Hello,
I don´t know, maybe I´m blind and could not find similar problem in the forum, or maybe none of you noticed it?
Since weeks, I enjoy the immediate network change 2G > 3G and 4G (just looking hat the Phone, but not used a App thats need data connection)
Today I just go on my work route and listen to internet radio for the first time again, that of course is continuously loading data.
But to my shock, I realized that he not switch from the usual point of H network to the 4G LTE network as usual.
I suspected bad and wanted to exclude the TuneIn app, and i turned on at the same time Google Maps, colesed TuneIn, scolled in Maps so that data flow´s ........ nothing happens, it stays in the H+ network, then i changed to the speed test an check the speed ..... it´s about 5 mbits, so actually still no LTE ( it does not show so well on )
I do this few more minutes and then closed all the apps at the same time. Now he has logged into the LTE network !
What a F..K is that? :-/
That means, if i'm traveling around and an app constantly pulls data, the Note stay only in 2G/3G network, because it changes only to 4G when no data flow is!
WTF!
Could someone test the same, maybe mine is broken or something like that.
Greetings Frank

I had the exact same problem on my note2 also. Its very annoying. Fortunately for me that only affects me if I am tethered, otherwise I don't have an app that keeps pulling data for too long. I have not found any solution for this issue. It seems that is how the radios are supposed to function to not disable a data connection in the middle of something.
Ehrpd seems to have fixed the whole cutting off of data streams for me when switching back and forth between networks, which is awesome. Unfortunately the note 3 seems to love 3g and hate 4g most days unless I toggle airplane mode manually.

Only with your Note 2, or with Note 3 too?
My Note 2 LTE with Vodafone was horrible, after 2 months I gave it back to the dealer and changed my contract also back. To much trouble all the time. LTE not usable if you are on road / driving.
Now with Note 3 i changed back again to LTE Test driver
It works much better, but the switching problem between 3G and 4G is really bad for me.
Which provider you use?

Same problem with my Lenovo A6020A46. It can't auto change 4G/LTE to 3G/2G. Don't know what's wrong with this ROM. Even its the latest Nougat updated on 07 Aug 2017.
