Seeking some assistance updating an unlocked (And out of US) G892A from stock - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello Folks,
As the thread title states, I'm looking for a way to update to the current firmware from stock (G892AUCU1AQG4) - I bought the device a few days after it came out and promptly unlocked it and took it to Canada - OTA Updates are obviously disabled as I'm not on AT&T and there's no indication of a manual update method via USB on AT&T's support pages. Any chance someone has pulled ODIN files for all of the updates (As they seem to be building off of one another, indicating it's basically a nesting doll scenario where I assume I'll need to run update after update in sequence)? Or is there another way to go about this that doesn't involve going stateside and buying a sim and plan?
Did some searching and found a few threads with links or references to the stock files, but didn't see any means to update from stock to current (Or even just the first 8.0 variant)
Cheers and thanks in advance if anyone can save my Canadian bacon.
Edit for background information: I've tried forcing an update via SmartSwitch (RIP Kies) but it says the device is up to date, making me think it's also just checking for an OTA update, but given there's no update available on my wireless network it just dead ends.

[Q] Please explain, android updates, pushing

Hi all,
Firstly a thanks to everyone contributing to this website, i find it to be a most invaluable source of information.
I have perhaps a simple question, I want to know who pushes updates to my phone, note 3? I bought this online unlocked and when I had a look at the back behind the battery it is made in Vietnam. My phone is a SM-N900, Android 4.4.2, Baseband Version N900XXUENG1, Build Number KOT49H.N900XXUENH1.
I am looking forward to a android 4.4.4 update and then eventually lollipop.
I am confused as to whether Samsung pushes any updates directly to my phone or if it has to go through a carrier? However, my phone is not locked to any carrier although my sim is on a plan with Vodafone. Vodafone says they are testing a new update but when they released the 4.4.2 update my phone had updated prior to that and the update I have is different to the Vodafone update details, e.g. baseband version.
I hope I have included enough information to have my question answered. Sorry for the long post.
Thanks all!

Sorry but I didn't clearly understand your question. Anyway try to put some info.
In fact no one pushes an update to your phone. Samsung stores updates on their servers, and the phone will check for an update (auto or manually) if any. It is not a push mechanism.
Does this answer your question?

Moto X Style updates without cell carrier?

I'm thinking about getting a Moto X Style just for use everywhere I have wifi coverage (I'd have no cellular service/carrier at all). Does anyone know if I will still get all of the security/OS updates or can they only come from a carrier?
If you buy it from Motorola directly, the carrier is not involved. But don't think that means you'll get timely updates. Apparently Moto used to be good at this, but no longer. Mine is still on Android Security Patch Level: February 1, 2016
Can anyone confirm they've gotten an OTA update without a SIM card installed or been able to load current updates with Motorola Device Manager?

I have with my Moto G3 which is unlocked, purchased from Motorola. Haven't tried with the Pure, but it is a carrier free device as well.
If you watch logcat and check for updates on the device, you'll see it connects to a Motorola server to check as well.
Pretty sure that's how all the tmo people got the update before it was released to them.
Has anyone had experience using Motorola Device Manager to load current updates or are they only available over the air?
MXPE is not carrier branded so you can get OTA without a SIM. Doesn't matter where you buy the phone (I have seen it sold on Amazon and Best Buy as well)
Sent from my awesome phone!

I received my Moto X Style on Friday, didn't have a sim card inserted when I plugged it on. It was on Android 5.1.1 and as soon as I set out the home wifi, it told me there was a software update, and I got 6.0 installed.

We're all trying to tell you that it works, it's fine, you don't need to worry. Carriers are not involved in delivering updates for unlocked devices because a) nothing is customized by any carrier on the unlocked device and b) your only relationship with them is via the SIM card, and you haven't paid them anything for the device. At the risk of sounding condescending, the thing you're worried about is just not how it works.
However, I went ahead and tried to install MDM just to test it out, and it seems that software has other unrelated problems and I can't use it.
So instead, I turned off mobile data and took the SIM card out, and confirmed yet again that it can connect to Motorola's update server and report that there are no updates available. So that's the real problem: you can update the device, but there are no updates to be had.
Edit: maybe the confusion is that term "OTA". Are you just talking about OTA as in over the cell network, or are you referring to WiFi as "OTA" as well? You know that those two work differently, right? OTA updates from a carrier via the cell network clearly only come from them, and clearly can't happen without a SIM. But there's not much difference in downloading the update from Motorola's server via WiFi on the device vs. downloading it via WiFi on your computer with MDM and sending it to the device via USB; it still comes from Motorola.

Thank you for trying to test MDM for me, I really appreciate that. I wish it had worked properly.
I'm not asking about MDM because I'm still questioning the OTA availability. That has been answered.
I'm asking because in the past, rooted phones wouldn't accept OTAs, so I'm trying to figure out how to apply security updates without having to un-root, then re-root. Maybe the answer to this is obvious, but it isn't to me.
Maybe the OTA availability problem mentioned above isn't an issue any more as I believe Marshmallow uses systemless root? I probably will stick with the stock ROM, just rooted.
@thejoelpatrol, are you rooted? If so, have you continued to be able to apply updates OTA?

Ah, ok, now see that is a whole other issue. That would have been good to know from the start. No, I'm not rooted, but it's getting increasingly tiresome, so I'll probably need to do that at some point. I've mostly used Cyanogenmod in the past but last I checked it wasn't ready for clark. I'll probably take a look at some stock root options when I get around to it. And so your concern here is worth thinking about.

unlocked SM-G900V on Tmobile - Software Update Question (not root/custom firmware)

(did a search as well as checked the recommended threads before posting)
As the title states, I have just picked up a Verizon Galaxy S5 that was unlocked and have my son's tmobile sim in and working currently, and with the proper APN info also)
It is currently on Android 4.4.4 and I would like to update it to the most recent available software. My questions are:
-What carrier's software do i install? VZW? When i hooked it up to the pc i let it install the proper USB drivers, and it has said there was software available(it was unable to connect doing it OTA)
-Is the software it found Marshmallow 6?
-Will updating through the VZW app on my pc erase any of the settings that are already there? The unlock, APN, Apps, etc?
I bought this for my son who has killed 3 Iphones in that many years and his main concern is that he has Snapchat
I was able to find an older version that works on this phone as the most recent says it will not and he can't get it from Google Play, I dl'ed an old apk from somewhere online and got that up and running.
Any advice or pointing me in the proper direction would be greatly appreciated. I'm just coming back here after years away since i don't deal with HTC or Windows phones any more
Thanks Again!!

Missing OTA upgrade to Android 8 (Oreo?)

HI,
I'm posting here because I am wondering if anyone can help.
I have a samsung S7 Edge. It's model SM-G935F. It's on Android 7.
It's security patch level is currently listed as Feb 2018.
I'm on the the Three UK network and I purchased this device from a Samsung branded store. If I manually check for updates it says "Your phone is up to do date".
I've spoken to support at three and they tell me that all of their S7's have had this firmware deployed. They have referred me to Samsung tech support who have talked me through a few things (which I had already tried...). I've even used Samsung Switch to check for an update.
The last message I received from Samsung support is that I'll have to wait until they get around to sending an update to my device. Meanwhile Samsung's general account say try taking it to a Samsung service centre.
So I was wondering if anyone had any advice?
Yes, I could root and deploy an issue to my device but for the moment I'd like to see if I can get the OTA update to work.
(I have insurance on this device so I'm unsure if I end up having to root it whether it could invalidate it?)
Also for work reasons I need to see if it is possible to get some support from Samsung and/or Three.
You can easily flash latest Oreo firmware through Odin.

Thanks, i know that, it wasn't the answer I was looking for.
Turns out that the supplier had handed me a chinese phone. So I am due a replacement.
To say I am not happy with Samsung's own branded UK shops would be an understatement.

Newbie from iPhone moved to android, got some questions please help me..

UPDATE:
I need an urgent help however.. I changed my csc to SPRINT from ATnT, using *#272*IMEI number# method. I kept changing to T mobile, and all, until I got stuck with SPRINT.
Now I tried the *#272*IMEI number# method and it won't let me do it with SPRINT CSC.
HELP please ( I just want to go back to ATnT or T mobile again..
Hi guys,
I just gave me iphone xs max to my wife since her iphone 7 is already too buggy and slow. Now that I moved to s10+, I love it and but the customization option is overwhelming me. Happy though that its customizable.
Then I realize 1 critical thing. I bought a snapdragon USA version of AT&T from local importer. I am located in Asia. When I looked at the software version, its only at "G975USQU1ASD3" with security patch, March 2019. I tried for 2 days now to get the OTA update and it just wont come. Saying that I already got the latest update.
Naturally I checked google and found so many updates, and one of them, night mode in camera, I really want. Now I am a newbie in all of these. My question is.. how do I get the non OTA update? I don't have a PC, but I might be able to use my work PC. I do have an micro SD card.
In summary:
1. Where to find the update files? the non OTA version
2. Is it doable without PC?
3. Can I just jump to the latest firmware update, or do I have to do it manually one by one?
4. Will it wipe my phone, because I spent hours customizing it before checking the problem.
Thank you very much if there's anyone willing to help me figuring things out.
regards,

1.You can download firmwares on sammobile.com for your model
2.You can use work PC but need get small software named Odin and samsung drivers for correct work
3.You not need install one by one you can flash directly to latest one but must use HOME_CSC and make backup with samsung app named smart switch which is already on phone if not you can get it on Google Play Store

To try and force a change of the csc power down your phone, remove the SIM card and boot up your phone without any SIM inserted. After the phone has completely booted up insert your SIM and you should get a message that the network settings are being updated.
I purchased an unlocked AT&T S10+ as well to use on T-Mobile. Since you don't actually have AT&T service I would very strongly recommend that you flash the U1 (unlocked) firmware. There are instructions for doing this in another XDA thread.
AT&T firmware is modded specifically for their messaging, network and WiFi services. Since I'm not an AT&T customer I got no OTA updates until I flashed the U1 firmware. Immediately after flashing the U1 firmware and booting up OTA updates were available to download and I receive OTA updates when they are available so there's no further need to manually flash updates using a computer.
The current U1 firmware has night mode for the camera and was just updated this week to the August security patch (which is good for Samsung).

Hi thank you very much for your help. I appreaciate it. However, as you can see from my opening post, I kinda did a mistake and locked myself out of AT&T now.. I am stuck with Sprint after changing CSC 3x feeling safe.. then Spint removed my ability to change CSC via *#272*IMEI#
:crying::crying::crying:
You shouldn't need to change the CSC using the dial code. If you cold start your phone without a SIM card then insert the sim after your phone has fully booted up you should get a message about your network settings updating.
I would also still recommend flashing the U1 unlocked firmware.

Hi thanks again for replying to me. I tried many times doing this but as soon as my SIM card got in, SPRINT OMADM took over.. I can't even get rid of the notification.. sigh..
This might help:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sp...-to-remove-sprint-omadm-notification-t3636264
That's apparently something annoying that's specific to Sprint.
To get rid of any US carrier stuff on your phone I would still suggest using the modified Odin (which can be found in the XDA firmware flashing threads for the S10+) and flash the U1 firmware version which is carrier free.
