Like or dislike Android Pie - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

How's people liking Android Pie?

I installed on my stock OG Pixel XL and I think it actually runs faster, or seems to. I turned off the swipe gesture for the home key at first to get used to the rest if the changes. I just turned it back on and I am getting used to that now. All in all I am happy.

OG PIXEL XL, here and one day in, I'm digging it. Hoping for root, Substratum, Dolby Atmos & Gravity Box

Root is already working, just flash magisk 16.7 beta.
I'm rooted and using elemental kernel, so far so good.
The OS itself feels a lot different than N or O, especially when using the pixel launcher.

Roots already available.
Substratum will never happen as they changed overlays. Say good bye to it.
The others I never used.
I personally love android 9. The new gestures are cool. Its speedy, battery life is real good.

You're right, about root. I guess I was thinking outside the Pixel realm. It's my backup phone. I could probably live without all the others, but Dolby Atmos. The rest are aesthetics, but I love me some car audio jamming.
I don't, his however love the Pixel and my Moto Z2 Play, probably won't get Pie.

I'm so hooked on Nova, IDK if I could even try Pixel Launcher.

Built AOSP last night is so much faster than the official build Pie is definitely going to be a nice experience

I have a weird issue where the battery icon stays lit up when charging while off. It them doesn't turn off when the phone is unplugged?
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Overall, it is fine. Pretty snappy especially considering I updated with the -w removed instead of doing a complete install. I haven't messed much with the new look and feel features since stock O was just fine to me. One bug is that when I click on/dismiss a notification the icon stays there sometimes until I swipe down on the curtain again. The new volume quick access that includes buzz and mute is nice though I don't like that just turning down volume from the main screen now controls media instead of ringer. The only thing I don't care for is the new window animation (app window bouncing open for lack of a better explanation). Seems like a waste of resources with no functional benefit. 2 apps that caused messages that they were designed for an older version of Android, but both worked fine and the message no longer pops up after hitting the OK button the first time you see it. All in all, P was a well though out and largely bug-free update. Clearly, it was extremely stable and ready for a general release that was earlier than any of us where expecting. I haven't seen anyone talking about reverting to O. That is always a good sign.

I stand corrected. I tried it on 8/6 using the regular Substratum app. Updated to Magisk 16.7 beta (not sure if that's important), downloaded Substratum beta v999, and it works. Thanks for proving me wrong y'all! My scorched retinas are forever in your debt.

I have a test build with it but I have not had time to flash it yet. I'll get to it tonight

It's pretty snappy. I'm digging all the little nuances, like the volume popup and the in call bubble that shows on top of other apps.
While using the phone, the clock in the upper left, catches my eye and I think it's a notification.
The nav pill is ok. I have a little trouble switching to previous app.
I signed up for the DIGITAL WELL BEING app. I don't know if it will be very useful, to me, but time will tell.
I do appreciate being able to darken the quick settings tray, but don't understand why notifications are left with white backgrounds.
I don't like having to pull down, twice, to get to settings.
ETA, I found another thing I like, the select text, expanding window and the copy / paste experience.

MM Android 6.0.1 Ho do you find with the new hydrogen ROM?

Do you find any bugs or improvement?
I've never installed any hydrogen ROM (always oxygen) but i'm curious to know if MM is more fluid than LP.
Does doze works?

Well, I've tested it. I can say that the Fingerprint is a huge improvement compare to OxygenOS' one. For the rest of the ROM, it seems to be pretty solid and smooth. I don't tested it more than 20 minutes (really don't like HydrogenOS..), but yeah, it seems to be a good improvement compare to OxygenOS in general. But I've had some troubles going back to OxygenOS, so if you want to test it out by yourself, be sure TO BACKUP EVERYTHING important into your PC (or out your phone).
But yeah, I hope OxygenOS will be as fast and stable as HydrogenOS is.

Here's hoping. I just can't get used to H2OS any time I've tried it. I guess I'd still rather use something closer to stock Android, even if it doesn't perform as well!
But if you change hidrogen launcher (with nova or GEL) doesn't seems like a vanilla ROM? Are there other changes from Oxygen over the quick settings and the launcher?
p.s. is only in english and chinese?

yes, only 2 language
the difference are in, launcher, notification, quick setting, different swipe (left for close app o erase notification, right for open notification or lock app, so you can't kill it in multitasking)
I've been running it for a couple of days. First thing I did was to remove some of the Chinese stuff. Second was to change the launcher.
There are fewer options for customization, probably because MM is new to the opt, and that its beta software.
The thing I miss is the automatic activation of do not disturb from the cm builds, not a deal breaker. There's no dark theme, but layers manager seems to do the trick.
It's fast, FP works better than any lollipop rom I've tried and at par or better with the FP on iPhone.
The only problem I e noticed with camera is occasionally it's slow to respond, possible due to doze, also the audio level seems to vary when recording video.
I didn't notice smart lock, but my email server prevents me from using it anyways.
The sound quality from the speaker seems clearer.
I've always had poor battery life battery is much improved, and it got better when I removed Facebook, this is subjective as I haven't tested it out much.
Some of the settings are hard to find, but it a learning curve.
Wifi will drop when doing a soft reboot, for theme changes, and it won't reboot into recovery with flashify, or reboot at all with xposed, again no big deal. Cycling wifi on/off in control panel brings it back I've occasionally lost the 4G/3G indicator, but data is still active, again cycling data on/off brings it back.
A few xposed modules won't work with mm, but that's kind of DUH, they aren't updated. I'm impatient for "alert slider" to get an update, as the flashlight on is very useful to me. I haven't installed many modules as they all are for lollipop. YouTube background playback works.
LTE seems to work, but it says 4G, I can use either sim and get LTE, something I missed on any other MM rom.
I did lose my twrp, but I flashed it over adb, and it now working with power and vol+
I installed kingmericans hos today. Like everyone has noticed FP is blazing fast. Rest is more or less the same as LP hos. A few lags here and there but it's definitely way better than OOS. Even I CNT get used to hos. I revert back to vanilla android eventually but I'm glad at least one plus got one of their ROMs to be nice.
I found it fast and stable. Great job, I was happy in lollipop, now I'm 10x times happier with this device even we don't have custom kernels yet. (Of course nobody will work in a kernel for a leaked beta)

Using Kingmercians Hydrogen OS and with Google Now Launcher it is really quite amazing. Sure, it isn't as good as Oxygen, but it is Marshmallow and that alone makes it worth it. You can customize Hydrogen OS to be perfectly OK and while Oxygen is indeed preferred I'd rather use this until Oxygen comes out and then just install Oxygen, it's not like it is hard to switch ROM's.
Well it's butter. Can't stand OOS after this. Xposed works so customization galore. Of course battery is much better. Heck even Viper works. Finally OP2 works.
H²OS MM <3
Hey !
I just give my personal opinion.
I find this first beta v1.0.2 & TWRP 3.0.0 by Kingmercians incredibly robust and fluid.
The FP sensor is a marvel and is faster than the iPhone 6 Plus ! ;p
In addition it consumes nothing with Servicely ! And the best part about it is that the power save mode is 100% lag free !
I tried to return the phone in all directions, with Xposed v80 where I encountered some problems with Gravity Box...
Especially the percentage of battery level that does not stop to make small jumps. If I put the default settings in Gravity Box and puts the battery percentage from the system menu, it disappears in seconds...
(So I deleted Gravity Box and everything is back to normal when you reboot.)
If not except it Locale More works very well too. (For me it's in French !)
One last thing if I had the choice the first time I used the Oneplus 2 to change the preinstalled ROM (OOS), I would do it again when we see H²OS is its superb IOS like interface.
At any point of view I prefer H²OS.
Do not forget this is a beta, some bug not very important, works better than OxygenOS 2.2.0, there is no doubt.
Peace.

[Discussion] How many of you have switched to Nougat?

The title says it all. Lets have a general discussion on how many people have really switched to Nougat - why have you / why have you not?
For me, after testing tons of Nougat based ROMs (PureNexus, LOS, CM14.1, RR, AOSP, AOSPlusOne, Slim7, etc) I switched back again to COS 13.1.2 because it has by far proved to be the most stable for me - I use camera extensively on my phone (Snapchat, Instagram are secondary, I do smartphone photography as well) and COS provides the best camera quality for me in all the apps. Camera quality is always the primary reason I have to switch back to COS. Performance and battery have been decent for me on COS too. I get around 4.5-5 hours of SOT with my regular usage always.
I switched to Nougat because it is latest and certainly has fixes and security patches over previous version and also every custom rom and even devs only build for Nougat now.
And most importantly it does my daily routine work with my device perfectly so there's no reason switching back to MM unless a burden falls upon you
Again not to forget the delicious ui on Nougat.
As in signature: I'm on TugaPowerROM N.
It comes rooted with MagiskSU, features ViPER4Arise audio and OMS7 (Substratum) theming engine.
CyanogenMod has switched to LineageOS, and Cyanogen Inc. ceased all activities.
Like Mr.Ak, I think that staying with COS will lead to vulnerabilities. TugaPowerROM is often updated, with latest Android security patches.
+1

I tried installing the VoLTE fix (imsservice.apk), but I still have the hurricane icon and now my Bluetooth is broken. Does anybody have their unbroken folder of stuff they can share?

Swift Installer

I have a 2-part question that I am hoping someone might know the answer to, or a resource to get:
1. When did unattended install/uninstall cease to be a functionality of the tool?
2. Can it be restored?
Having to hit "Install" and "Done" for each and every overlay is EXTREMELY tedious.

Did you gave root before? I was under the impression that would not work without being rooted.

No, I just know there was a time when using my Note 8 and S8+ before that, that it would do unattended installs.
This doesn't require root. Case in point would be the app called App Backup and Restore. It produces an item in Settings called Apex that, when enabled, allows the program to run tasks unattended.

It's always required you to acknowledge as far as I know. That is if you are unrooted.
I've been using it since it was announced and always had to acknowledge.
It cannot be restored natively to the app.
I mean once you do your initial run through it's a few apps a day to confirm. You could try hitting up their telegram and speaking directly to the devs
Is it possible to save the theme that i have made for an other installation ?

Yes.
I love swift installer, the initial set up is tedious but worth it. After that you just have to do a few if you change your theme. Also for those who are curious it does work with good lock notification shade settings. I have made an inquiry to the devs about supporting more than on accent color.

Have you noticed any battery draining?
When I had it back in my S9+ I uninstalled it because of this reason.

Looks like you had a theme applied from the Galaxy store. You need to be on the default theme before you install swift installer.

I have been using off and on since I got this phone. There is no noticable difference in battery usage. This app is updated every few days and has constantly addressed bugs and other issues. So if the app cause battery drain when I came out in may, I can assure you that has been fixed. Also if you have any other theming apps active at the same time as this one. That could also be the culprit. I say you just re download it again and see what your experience is like.

Thanks guys for your answers.
Tried it for one more time today. I disconnected the phone from the charger and with 100% battery installed the app and the overlays.
Now my battery again has draining. With the same usage that I had always around 3h SOT until 50% today only achieved 1.5h!!
Of course I didn't installed any other app.
I'll give it a couple days and I'll report back.

Interesting, I would report your experience through the Google play page. There is an area where you can provide feedback directly to the developer. Do you by chance have any other applications that are used to theme the phone, or have any themes active from the Samsung's themes including fonts?
I am at 2:15 sot and have 70% battery. It sounds like swift installer isn't getting a long with another app. Also did any overlays fail? Might I suggest leaving the app installed and removing all overlays untill the app updates again. Once the app is updated reinstall the overlays, if you update an app past swift installer. That can cause issues and may also be the reason for battery drain. I don't update any apps on my phone until swift updates, that includes the Galaxy app store as well.

I've run it for almost as long as I have had this phone and I'm usually looking at 4 hours sot at about 50 or 60%

What mods are you using?

historically i've waited a little longer to leap into root/mods but root was available so quickly i couldn't resist.
i've got:
swift installer to make everything black
viper to sort out the middling audio performance
youtube vanced
edge sense plus, to remap:
single squeeze to start/stop music
long squeeze to turn flashlight on/off.
runnning action launcher and via browser.
interest to hear what everyone's modding approach has been!
i have fdroids privileged extension, twemoji, and subtratums mod installed. it refused to let me install swift installers mod. i assume you are talking about magisk mods lol

idk tbh. it was just greyed out. i figured it may be because it wasnt updated for the new magisk installer. so i figured i could update it for it....... the mod is nothing, like there is nothing in it, even on the github for it. it was just the template that in a couple places they made it say swift installer.

The app should prompt you to install the Magisk mod on first use. It is supposed to make it work better. But after looking at the actual mod, I don't see how it is doing anything
I gotten my Pixel 3a XL now and I quickly unlocked it and installed Magisk.
I already use these mods on my current phones: Viper4Android, Youtube Vanced, Advanced Charging Controller, iOS Emoji, systemless host with Ad Away app. I'll also be checking out Edge Sense Plus as if seems like a great tool to customize this (new to me) feature.
Other "root" apps that I use regularly - Tasker (and various related apps like secure settings), Titanium Backup, Terminal Emulator.
EDIT - I've done all of this now and really like the Edge Sense Plus app. One thing I did was I added a single squeeze to take a picture when I'm in the camera app. This is so simple, but makes it much easier to take pictures with one hand - no more finger gymnastics trying to press the shutter button while trying not to drop the phone!

you don't need to use substratum, and you can choose the colour and accent for every app. handful of screenshots attached.

I see so it does the same as the swift substratum theme but without the need of substratum. What's the advantages of doing this? Thanks

really only that is applies a unified custom accent colour to every app it themes, and also, i suppose, that you can use whatever background colour you like (if straight black is not your thing (which would be crazy cos black looks so good on this screen)). and i guess that you don't have to use substratum, which i find quite an annoying app to use.

i actually only use the EQ (what kind of device doesn't have an EQ built in??!) and the Viper Clarity features. the EQ is self-explanatory and the clarity adds, well, clarity (now sure how really but it sounds great).

Same here! Fire-Equalizer only. Try out my tuning and let me know what you think. I tried to preserve the phone speakers natural sound while adjusting areas that needed a little extra without going overboard.
Anyone else tried Viper on Bluetooth output yet? It's not working for me.
Any tips? Tried compatibility mode, and several EQ presets as well as a massive gain drop. Nothing changed.

I believe you'll need the audio compatibility patch and theAudiomodification library. Those modules to make it work

The way I did it as I installed the viper 2.7 APK it'll ask you call to install driver then reboot. Then going to magisk and installed the audio compatibility patch. And the library.

Well that's frustrating. I'm at a total loss as to what the problem could be.
I just duplicated your process, though I installed the Viper APK via Magisk, then the driver, reboot, install library and patch, reboot.
I don't think any effects whatsoever are happening, on any output. I can't tell any difference at all on stuff that should be blatantly obvious (eg. high treble, 40dB drop in gain, etc).
I tested the effects using both YouTube and iHeartRadio
