Enhance, increase, boost headphone jack sound, speaker sound on Asus zenfone max pro - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

i dont know if any one noticed or not, but the sound quality is very very bad and level is very low, even cheap mobile from xiaomi ,and other brands have good quality sound output from 3.5 audio jack on their phone
Asus advertised about sound output, but believe me its very pathetic and not pleasing to hear music from earphone with this phone, guys just like there is a work around for camera, do we have anything to fix sound and music problem
please someone help how we can improve, what kind of mod we can apply to make sound loud and clear from headphone jack
hardware wise the phone is great but software wise worst,

Method 2:

Yeah I noticed this too, coming from Redmi Note 4 the sound on Max Pro M1 sounds kind of... muffled? Minor annoyance when I play rhythm game on mobile, cause I kind of need to hear the tapping sound. And I'm on the latest build update, so that means they haven't fixed it yet (though thank god they fixed the multitouch otherwise I won't get this phone).

Speaker sound is loud & clear, but headphone output is truly pathetic. I'm using 4 sound mods, and still not satisfied. There's almost no bass.

any one know how to fix this, as we know asus is not going to do anything for it

I read on Asus forum that one user solve the headphone problem by clearing the cache partition. Don't know if it work for everyone. https://www.asus.com/zentalk/in/thread-217606-1-1.html

Rate audio quality of ZF2!

So which earphones / cans do you use to listen to music.
On a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best, how would you rate the audio quality?
Have you used ASUS earphones/headphones with ZF2?
Discuss!
I used NT100 in-ear (I buy the 550ML, lowest spec, so no quick-charger and earphone included)
Playing music with PowerAMP, customize EQ, Limiting activated. At highest volume, I didn't hear any clipping like my old phone. I usually use it at 50-60% volume.
Really, I have to say that I could not diffrentiate between phones audio output once Viper4Android is installed with same settings. No earphones with my ZE551 4Gb ... I think US version gets that removed.
p.s: Using Yamaha EPH-50 Gold earbuds.

No earphones with my 551ML either. Not that i would ever use them lol. I use a pair of Sony MDRs and it sounds alright, without Viper installed.
1 mine is awful
Using Sony headset, great along with viper4android as default music fx..
I am using monster beats + EXTREMEMusic + stock music app. Result is cool ?
I use Helium earphones and Google Play music app on my Zenfone 2 4go/64go model and it is awesome.

Try Viper4Android?
The speaker on the Zenfone is pathetic. The tiny single speaker on my old phone (iPhone 5) is both louder and clearer. I got the ASUS headphones with my 550, but they are awful (I hate all inner-ear headphones anyway, but these sound very muddy and over-bassy and they keep popping out of my ears). Get much better sound through my old iPhone buds, which I always thought sounded good despite getting a lot of criticism. Max volume of the phone seems a little low to me, and reduces still further if you turn off the ASUS AudioWizard. I would like to try the phone with viper4android and some better headphones.
+1 ASUS AudioWizard is needed for proper sound. I wonder if there is a way to boost the speaker just like MTK devices ... The speaker is as big as the G3 yet the G3 sounds 2x louder. Boosted speaker with viper4android, its better than stock now.
It's not bad or about middle of the road for me. Primarily use aux (jack) for the cars. Bluetooth works fine. Speaker sucks. That's the best description. When I need to use Waze (nav app) I need to jack in or use bluetooth since you won't really hear it. 3.5mm audio jack and bluetooth are on the quiet side but the only improvement over the sub par speaker.
im using jabra step bluetooth headset with viper4android..makes me feel like partying in a club using SRS Audio (Extreme Trubass) convolver..
I'm going to echo @aziz07 - AudioWizard is necessary. If you've disabled it thinking it was bloat, go back and restore it or push it from a stock ROM.
After I had "cleaned up" the ROM, I had the most hollow-sounding audio: no bass, it was all harsh mids and treble. In my car, the woofers were barely engaging. Viper4Android did nothing except bring up the mids and make it sound even more hollow. That's when I realized there was something else EQ-related that was missing. I then restored AudioWizard and all was well.
The audio quality is good with this phone. It's a bit bass heavy (when things are default), but that's pretty objective and easily adjusted. Using cheap in-ear earphones, there's thump.
I don't think it sounds as dynamic as my LG G2, but I can't make a direct comparison since my G2 died.
I'm no audiophile, but I'm VERY pleased with the output quality at low to mid volumes.

I know , it sounded like an empty can of coke  I told SuperZen Rom maker that it gives more power mA to AUX port ; he added AudioWizard backin R12 release. Along with viper4andorid, it beats my R.I.P lg g2 (Started freezing randomly then would not boot anymore ; anyway it felt so cheap to beginning with and was overheating all the time 74C ; this Zenfone rarely exceeds 50C unless using the 18W quick charge, yet still ~55C ; I have seen my SoC go as low as 29C and battery 25C - Intel 3D 22nm Tri-gate transistors :good.
I use Yamaha EPH-50 Gold (13.6mm drive) + Viper4Android with Sennheiser HD800 settings lol + AudioWizard Music ; the bass is so powerfull that it gives me a headache and I have to lower it lol
using a Xiaomi Piston 2 + Shuttle+ here
I can say that the sound quality is HORRIBLE,like one of the worst i've ever experienced. It's so bad i am cosider buying a used 32gb iPhone 5c for $175 just to listen to music
haha My iphone 4 sound like crap versus the Zenfone with the settings and boosts mentioned above. Read earlier posts or stay with iphone 5c. Same crappy sound with iphone6+ and worse is that you can't mod them and use Viper4Android. Bass is many times more powerfull in my car's stereo and Harman-Kardon home theater BIC PL-200 system.
Sound quality for me is pretty good. I've tried it with some Panasonic RPTCM125K in ears, koss KSC75, Grado SR60, and a Bose Soundlink mini. The Panasonic's sounded decent, if a little muffled, but no different than what I remember when using them with other phones. The KSC75s sound great, and have decent clarity. I also use them over Bluetooth with this phone via a g-cord wireless audio receiver (purchased on amazon). They sound quite good that way as well, maybe lacking a little detail. The grados sounded excellent, so I use those when I don't need to be moving around. the Bose sounded somewhat muffled. I'm not sure if equalizer settings on the phone and Soundlink were working against each other or what. Although, the Soundlink mini seems to be a bit finicky with the surface that you place it on, and I had it resting on my kitchen table when using it, so maybe that's what was causing it.
Audio characteristics aside, and I'm no audio expert, the audio amplifier used in this phone seems quite capable. TPA2080D1, in case you're wondering. The full Bill of materials can be found at http://www.ewisetech.com/Pages/Product/bom.aspx?s=1961&dt=6820
Edit: I'm running with the audio wizard turned off. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if there's still some equalizer adjustment going on in the background.

Are you using Viper4Android? It made a big difference here even for the external speaker, use Vocal Boost and maxout everything but don't use speaker optimization. You can also apply this systemwide by deleting 2 paragraphs in /system/etc/audio_policy ; --> See Zenfone 2 Resources thread in viper4android section. After audio_policy modding for better V4A compatibility, Its working with Tunein radio, making crappy 32kbps radio stations sound much better, it will work with Youtube, etc

Headphone hissing sound

Is this headphone hissing sound common in all mi a1 phones or is there some hardware issue?
hiss
Is your phone plugged in and charging when you get the hiss? im thinking its a hardware fix. It's not easy to notice it, at 1st I thought mine was OK - but play any tune that has some lower volume parts and you can hear it. Also, play any MP3, pause it - and you will hear the high pitched whine / hiss - it sort of sounds like electronic interference of some sort. So the sound is always there just masked until quieter passages. To test , use headphones, turn up the volume, play an mp3, use YouTube - anything with audio, then PAUSE the item and listen - you will hear a second or so of the noise, then it will stop.

Just noticed this last night :/. I was using apple earpods. changed to sony headphones, and the issue is gone. weird though
I'm interested in buying this phone but I'm holding off on it because of this widespread headphone audio issue. I'm surprised that this is such an issue... especially since the phone's supposed to have a 10v amplifier and Xiaomi's marketing the phone's HD audio? WTF.
I just need to know if this is affecting only Indian models or all models.
It's not that big of a deal mate you can only for a couple seconds when it goes silent, the audio on this is great

What about this thread? https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/71xrqz/mi_a1_headphone_static/
Seems like a fairly serious issue. And I like my volume loud (90+) so if static is apparent at higher volumes, I'll be extremely upset.
I'm extremely skeptical about the audio quality of this device. I can totally see it being above average or devices from the same price segment but I'm sure it isn't something from another world. People seem to over praise it and I'm sure most of them are just considering loudness as audio quality.

with some half decent earphone this phone sounds great not just loud mate
I'm having same issue.
This might caused by the audio amplifier boosted the volume gain which increases the static noise and taints audio clarity.
Earphone/headphone which has more than 35ohm impedance and low sensitiviy pressure level below 98dB might have better chance with the boosted gain.
Even on ATH M40X, the background static noise is still noticeable when sound is played. *sigh
I wish the amplifier is disabled by default and could be enabled on demand from equalizer app.
@chrone Exactly, I'm willing to see how it will perform with biquads mod (if it is possible)
Hey guys I've just noticed that I get the same hissing sound on my nvidia shield K1 but I never noticed it lol

Seems like a low impedance problem? There is a thread on reddit about this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/71xrqz/mi_a1_headphone_static/
Audio Quality is awesome on both the speaker and headphone jack. I have no issues. I am already getting mod like quality from this one.
I have this problem too using Audio-Technica Mx 40x and xioami hybrid. It's becoming quite annoying

How to solve the Hissing Noise ?

okay , we are all stuck by that obnoxious noise of earphone in our MI a1 . some say its due to bad quality earphone ( but believe me i tried good ones too ) . so i want to know whether its hardware issue or it can be fixed by software?
I strongly believe that this issue can be solved by a software update. I've seen people facing this issue even on Bluetooth headphones so it is likely that Xiaomi can fix it. All we can do for now is just wait. Im hoping for a fix as soon as possible.

I'm using some Earphones that came with a zenfone 3 and the hissing noise is there but it's not that loud and I can only really hear it when a song stops is it worse for other people because it's no where near a deal breaker for me. I never even noticed until I read it was there and now I've noticed my shield K1 has it too

To be honest this issue doesn't bother me that much, if it won't be fixed by a software update i will just buy myself new pair of earphones that dont produce aby hissing. Considering how much advantages this phone has i would be able to invest in new earphones to get rid od this issue. As I said, only thing we can do right now is just wait.

Same, the advantage of the phone is more than the hissing noise. Heck even the Xiaomi own In Ear Pro HD with 32ohms also got this issue.

So here you go
Go to settings - sounds - other sounds - off the touch sound
I am facing this issue with soundmagic es 150 but what all are getting wrong is that it is not a software problem. Actually our Mi A1 produces a 10 V amplification as compared to the 2V produced by normal smartphones and hence require earphone/headphone with higher impedance buy some good impedance(somewhat costly) ear/head phones and this problem will be gone.

it a bit sucks, as i bought my AT 50x with impedance of 38ohm to be able to feed them from phone / tablet ))
software update could give us at lease equalizer where you could change preamplification to battle the hissing.
on ATH50x hissing is lower compared to samsung in ears from galaxy., where it's awful..
but nothing new, this hissing was present also on Redmi Note 4 in MIUI 8+9 so i would say xiaomi sucks at audio quality in general.

Using an impedance adaptor from Ali express solved the problem. I used the 75 ohm one.
Just search for "Impedance adapter". There is no hissing sound now.
It seems no matter what phone you pair with in ear earphones, they all hiss + cannot playback properly at very low volumes. However full size headphones have no problem.
I think its something to do with small earphones being more sensitive, there is alot of components in a phone which are close proximity to the audio components.
Anyone who says they dont notice anything is because the volume is loud enough to cover it.
You can buy impedance adapter for like 5-15 bucks, or build yourself one with let's say 60-70ohms, it is way cheaper and super easy this way. 3.5mm on Mi A1 is 10v so you need higher impedance to lower the hissing noise (reduce voltage coming to earphones).
I am using PC headphones and I almost can't hear hissing on them since they are way bigger than those small IEMs and can handle greater voltages compared to those smaller IEMs.
Sorry for the post ressurection but this is all a matter of the Preamp being so great on the "Mi A1" that low-impedance headphones won't just cope "with all that juice". I myself was being driven nuts with all the hissing on my 23Ohm CX300 Sennheiser in-ear phones that only after reading a reddit post on this subject and finally connecting my 300-Ohm Sennheiser HD580 did I notice not only the hissing was gone for good, but also that by using the fantastic settings enabled by a simple, free app called Precise Volume, my HD580 were brought new portable life that no other DAP before it could provide it with!

Fix for sup-par sound quality

***(Update: I've found a fix! Being in stock room and installing Ainur Sauron mk ii.ii has improved the frequency response of the phone. The volume is same as before (but it's still adequate), so PowerAmp/Firefox/VLC is still much louder. But now the sound signature is similar. No more pathetically weak bass and overly bright sound!
BTW, Ainur Sauron doesn't work on LineageOS, RRemix, etc. I think Ron's made with Shivam Kumar Jha's trees are incompatible with Sauron. So I'm using stock 318)
I'm sure I'm not the only one that has noticed how badly Asus has tuned the audio of this phone (esp. through the 3.5mm jack).
The Snapdragon 636's SoC is capable of providing pretty decent audio quality. But in the ZMPM1 only the sound through a select few apps (Firefox, PowerAmp with hires 24bit + 88/176/352/384khz audio, VLC, etc) is good. The sound from almost all other apps and audio mods like V4a is pretty bad.
For example, the sound produced by Firefox when playing YT videos is quite full and rich and has a seemingly accurate and linear frequency response. The same video when played through the YT app not only has much less volume, but also has a completely different sound signature with reduced bass, harsh treble, and an overall tinny and compressed feeling. (BTW, it's definitely the phone and not my headphones/IEMs)
Now in previous phones I've experienced that Firefox's audio is not changed by mods such as V4a or other equalizers. This makes me believe that Asus has, for some reason, purposely worsened the sound (perhaps due to some issue with the amp? IDK)
So is there any way to revert/override/bypass the changes made by Asus in all apps? So far I've tried the following-
1. Used Lineage Os 15.1 by Shivam Kumar Jha. It boosts the volume so there's no difference in volume between the good and bad sound, but the sound is still bass-lacking and tinny in most apps while full and rich in Firefox.
2. Used Ainur Sauron mk ii - Didn't fix it.
3. Used V4a- Not only did it not fix it, but installing the V4a driver means audio is now capped at 48khz and 16bit, so even PowerAmp hires breaks.
4. Other equalizers- doesn't really remedy the problem, only masks it somewhat (that too pretty badly).
So is there some way to maybe modify the audio effects or mixer paths files to remove this? Or is this just baked into the device in such a way that it's not fixable? I hate being limited to Firefox for YouTube and PowerAmp hires for local audio, and not being able to use viperDDC/IRS for headphone compensation makes things worse. So any help would be very much appreciated.
For me with V4A sound is great by using Convoler/IRS mod, and some tweaks in compatible mode.

V4a just changes the sound, it doesn't improve it. And with it's 48khz 16bit limit even PowerAmp's hi res output becomes average quality.
Even if you neutralize the frequency curve with v4a, it can never improve the slightly garbled and compressed nature of the Zenphone's sound. Instrument separation cleraly suffers because of it.

I see. Can you give me an audio sample file where you could see diff clearly ? So i can test it our myself with with and without v4a, and might be able to figure out.
Thanks
man thanks for this post, i am raising this issue in asus offical forum and xda alos, but mostly people are only worried about the camera quality and gaming perfomance, nobody even in youtube reviews talked abut worst sound quality of this phone, i dont know why.
i even raised service request with Asus but they did not provide any solution, more and more developer need to fix in future custom rom. other else this phone is total waste, i am movie and music loving guy, the movie sound is terrible from earpone jack, in night when i want to watch movie and listen to music , i cant do it, because its not pleasant,
the speaker is good, but 3.5 jack sound is very very bad, i request all rom developer please fix this in your custom rom, as asus is not listening
There are kernel avaible so may there is a way to enhance or tweak the sound from that level, please do it, if i had know that this is the issue, i would have gone for RN5 Pro phone, instead of this one, i need a great experience, even phone selling at 5000 have clear and loud sound i had Lenovo A6000 Plus, which was almost half of this phones price, but man the sound was so great
Asus Please fix this in updates, other else this is waste, not only sound, there are many more bugs in this phone, Asus just rushed this half backed phone to market, the phone should be balance of Hardware and Software, only having good hardware at competitive price is not enough, you need to have a great software to use the hardware properly, asus missed onthis one
even the LED notification and front flash is of cheap quality, even in dark night or dark room LED notification does not glow enough why Asus why
Camera software is patheric, but thanks to some mod, now we can use Google camera, i will use it for few months and then sell it, because its not pleasant to use due to many software issue and some cheap parts used by Asus.
Update: Using Ainur Sauron while on the stock room and enabling FMAS drivers using the Sauron useroptions file improved the sound (I think, or it just might be me slowly losing my mind, lol). I've also increased the volume of hphl and hphr in vendor/etc/mixer_paths.xml to 12, that may or may not have had something to do with it. The volume is still much lower than PowerAmp/Firefox, but the sound signature seems to be more neutral. Using splitscreen it seems that Firefox @ volume 6 and YouTube app @ volume 10 sound almost identical, and both of these sound pretty similar to an ancient s4 (which has a pretty linear frequency response).
I received my phone a about a week ago and I agree, coming from my old oneplus one the audio was lacking depth, it had recessed vocals with high interfering in between, and shrill highs. After carefully listening many flac and other audio files back and forth on my old phone and Asus, I came to the conclusion that the entire audio output spectrum of zenfone max pro m1 is shifted towards the right, which explains all the aforementioned issues. I have posted the same on zentalk and I really hope that this issue gets fixed soon. Too bad very few people look for decent audio quality in budget segment otherwise this wouldn't have been an issue at the first place.
Those that are still facing this problem, I stock room+Ainur Sauron. I've updated the OP with some relevant info.
This sounds great. Don't know why all people are complaining about 3.5 mm jack sound. I can hear each and every note of all songs same as I can on my pc. I've tried a lot of different earphones/headphones (2 sennheiser, 1 flipkart smart buy in ear, 1 Sony (over Ear) don't know the model was my friend's, 1 boat and 1 Philips. All sounded different but were very clear and fine.

How to enable 'FMAS drivers using sauron useroptions'... I have installed Ainur sauron
So after all these days I've found the perfect fix for speaker and headset audio quality improvement, install viper4android xHiFi from magisk and tweak the setting to your taste. the best part is all these changes are global, so unlike music FX or similar apps, these effects will not be limited to music players. I was also able to remove the sharp audio output from earphones and the loudspeaker using the EQ within viper. The addon also processed bluetooth audio but I haven't tested it yet.
Bro ,i am on the same boat ,but got good quality output using vlc player with audio output set to Open SL ES..Do it ,live with it till we get an update from ASUS.
Since i Love music i flashed a custom rom and now i'm enjoying music as i use to. Shane on Asus for ****ing up the audio on the device
Easiest way if you don't want to root
Just install vidmate and listen songs in it.
Try it just once.

Audio quality

Hi experts,
I'm a long time Xiaomi user coming from Mi A1 thinking to buy this Mi 9T in US.
I'm not to happy with the A1 audio quality, especially over the headphones. I tried different brands, but not much luck. My GF has a note6pro, my family 5a..
Looking at the gsmarena site they are not impressed too with headphone test on this model, not sure it can be trusted though.
My main concern is the microphone and echo/noise canceling.
Can you guys give me a "real life review"?!
Check other thread, there many other (me included) confirm audio quality is suprisingly good, contrary to rumors. Maybe updates improved it?
I can say it is just as good as my amazing LG V20 with quad DAC! And the LG V series are the bechmark when it comes to android audio quality.
Only my problem is that volume is low, but AFAIK that is EU regulations, and should be easy to hack/fix, and would not apply anyway AFAIK for US version.
Just got my Mi 9T, and it is just STUNNING! A piece of art. I still catch myself staring at its beauty.
I would like to know about this too. And once again, there is NO EU regulation limiting volume. Manufacturers are meant to warn users when the volume is getting loud so they can confirm they want to proceed. If the phone companies can't read the rules, that's not the EU's fault. Enough with the fake news.
There's two modes of audio in the 9t "hi-fi" or regular.
I think that the option it's meant to switch from the audio chip modes, regular or performance (I think it's the best chip it has Qualcomm for audio, or at least they made it sound like that).
This performance mode uses more power, like 5 times more, and I am almost certain that gsmarena reviewed it without this setting on, that's why the poor results.
Look at this for more info of the chip.

Interesting for the consuption I didn't know ! and I can confirm that the sound quality is very good.
For the volume mine is very loud, impossible to put at max but it depend of your earphones impedance and many others things. (you have to play good quality sample music like FLAC and a good player like "AIMP" or "Poweramp" that can be "bit perfect"
Yes, I did a blind test against my creative Sound Blaster E1 (the phone supports DACs over USB C as well) and it is indistinguishable from that nice and proper DAC, IN THE HI-FI MODE. The source was lossless stuff from Tidal and the earbuds used were my trusty HiFiMan RE400a earbuds. I can verify that one has to listen at like two clicks below the full volume for everything to come through (i.e. the volume is a bit low, but baseline audio performance is excellent)

I would be also interested in the microphone handling in the topic of Audit quality. On Mi A1 ppl always complained when I was using a headset as the noise canceling part did not work. Same for Speaker mode..
Also why "Hi-Fi audio" is not on by default as it claims to increase audio quality.
Regarding the phone calls I can tell that my factory set 9T is poor. I cannot hear and understand what people say when calling. (Never had this on any phone before) Weird sound and some echo. And nowhere any audio settings in phone.

I don't have that problem. Phone calls are clear
Regarding audio quality over a headphone jack = it is worst audio quality I have ever tested from any smartphone be honest. I also know people who see it the same way. I went to Mi9T from Pocophone and never had this issue there - poco is still in my house, I gave it to my wife so I can really compare between the two. Tried both normal and hi-fi modes on Mi9T.
Audio over BT is fine on other hand - thats most important for me
I was testing audio quality on SONY WH-1000MX3
What could be the reason for this I dont know. The audio chip should be great. I have tried many versions of MIUI as well.
Tested right now with Beyerdynamic dt770 Pro 250 Ohm version. My source file is from deezer to have a better idea of an average quality of a song someone might listen to.
Hi-Fi is enabled and i can say that audio quality is pretty good. I wouldn't compare it to LG Quad Dac but the phone is powering 250 Ohm studio headphones very well.
People usually evaluate audio quality by the amount of bass. IMO its good enough.
@Nexus5-32GB I have the same impression. I came from a Zuk Z2 Pro and audio quality is poor. Bass is OK but mids and treble are too high. I'm using the same Senheiser MX-30G as always and the difference is noticiable even in Hi-Fi. My wife's Redmi 4A have better sound.
I am using poweramp music player to listen to music, and the audio quality is just superb! Previously I used google play music with mi sound enhancer and the audio quality is pretty mediocre compared to poweramp.
I tested hifi with AudioTechnica M50. It does make a difference and I feel it is a lot louder so much that I'm afraid of pushing volume to max. I like my hearing very much. You don't need portable amps with this phone for the most part. It's probably not audiophile approved or something like that but it sounds very full.

What player are you using?
Using Google play the sound it's ****.
Using Tidal it's heaven, don't know why.
Exactly, if you use it right the sound is very good but if you listen mp3 with googlemusic, sure the best earphones can't do anything for you

I don't think it's a player issue 'cause I always use the same player. I always compare the sound using Spotify. I use Spotify on all my family devices.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense, I know, but in my case that happend, playing throug play music was horrible and understandable that people complain about it, but with Tidal it's beyond anything i've heard.
Other users have notified that they too notice when playing through play music.
actually is awesome

Hi experts,
I'm a long time Xiaomi user coming from Mi A1 thinking to buy this Mi 9T in US.

Coming from a zte axon 7 I was really doubtful about the sound quality, but I'm impressed about it, it has a hifi logo on the box and sounds really good, with a couple of good headphones I can't listen no difference with the zte axon 7, also had a poco f1 and it sounds a thousand times better than the poco
