How to solve the Hissing Noise ? - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

okay , we are all stuck by that obnoxious noise of earphone in our MI a1 . some say its due to bad quality earphone ( but believe me i tried good ones too ) . so i want to know whether its hardware issue or it can be fixed by software?

I strongly believe that this issue can be solved by a software update. I've seen people facing this issue even on Bluetooth headphones so it is likely that Xiaomi can fix it. All we can do for now is just wait. Im hoping for a fix as soon as possible.

think of worst case scenario i am gonna replace my device soon

I'm using some Earphones that came with a zenfone 3 and the hissing noise is there but it's not that loud and I can only really hear it when a song stops is it worse for other people because it's no where near a deal breaker for me. I never even noticed until I read it was there and now I've noticed my shield K1 has it too

To be honest this issue doesn't bother me that much, if it won't be fixed by a software update i will just buy myself new pair of earphones that dont produce aby hissing. Considering how much advantages this phone has i would be able to invest in new earphones to get rid od this issue. As I said, only thing we can do right now is just wait.

Same, the advantage of the phone is more than the hissing noise. Heck even the Xiaomi own In Ear Pro HD with 32ohms also got this issue.

So here you go
Go to settings - sounds - other sounds - off the touch sound

I am facing this issue with soundmagic es 150 but what all are getting wrong is that it is not a software problem. Actually our Mi A1 produces a 10 V amplification as compared to the 2V produced by normal smartphones and hence require earphone/headphone with higher impedance buy some good impedance(somewhat costly) ear/head phones and this problem will be gone.

it a bit sucks, as i bought my AT 50x with impedance of 38ohm to be able to feed them from phone / tablet ))
software update could give us at lease equalizer where you could change preamplification to battle the hissing.
on ATH50x hissing is lower compared to samsung in ears from galaxy., where it's awful..
but nothing new, this hissing was present also on Redmi Note 4 in MIUI 8+9 so i would say xiaomi sucks at audio quality in general.

Already turned of the touch sounds yet i am facing the hissing noise

Soundmagic E10C doesn't have this issue.. May be due to its 46 Ohm impedance ...

Impedance adaptor solves the problem

Using an impedance adaptor from Ali express solved the problem. I used the 75 ohm one.
Just search for "Impedance adapter". There is no hissing sound now.

It seems no matter what phone you pair with in ear earphones, they all hiss + cannot playback properly at very low volumes. However full size headphones have no problem.
I think its something to do with small earphones being more sensitive, there is alot of components in a phone which are close proximity to the audio components.
Anyone who says they dont notice anything is because the volume is loud enough to cover it.

You can buy impedance adapter for like 5-15 bucks, or build yourself one with let's say 60-70ohms, it is way cheaper and super easy this way. 3.5mm on Mi A1 is 10v so you need higher impedance to lower the hissing noise (reduce voltage coming to earphones).
I am using PC headphones and I almost can't hear hissing on them since they are way bigger than those small IEMs and can handle greater voltages compared to those smaller IEMs.

Sorry for the post ressurection but this is all a matter of the Preamp being so great on the "Mi A1" that low-impedance headphones won't just cope "with all that juice". I myself was being driven nuts with all the hissing on my 23Ohm CX300 Sennheiser in-ear phones that only after reading a reddit post on this subject and finally connecting my 300-Ohm Sennheiser HD580 did I notice not only the hissing was gone for good, but also that by using the fantastic settings enabled by a simple, free app called Precise Volume, my HD580 were brought new portable life that no other DAP before it could provide it with!

Sony still wont learn about sound output

I've owned the Z1, and the Z1 Compact. Now I'm hearing Z2 has the sale volume/crackly output.
I wear an earphone plugged directly into my phones jack when I talk and drive, and the audio quality on every sony phone is TERRIBLE. Crackly, distorted sound and every time the mic on the earphone touches any part of my shirt it cuts out all volume. I've tested this with 6 other android phones and no problems. Strangely though Windows Phone also suffers from this problem. Also audio output through a 3.5mm aux cable into the car produces extremely quiet sound on the highest volumes.
How has Sony not fixed this? I feel like this is bush league stuff.

So you're telling me when you plug in earphones directly into the jack, there is no change in sound, no crackling audio, no clarity or volume issues at all? Try plugging those same earbuds into another modern android phone or iphone and you'll hear zero interference or crackling issues.

Can you check your source material of what you're listening to? It may be compressed on the high end.
And owning Z1, Z1 Compact and now the Z2 is kind of unbelieveable if you just want to come in an trash the Z2. (Not that I'm accusing you of this but I would have posted this issue on this forum if it was discovered on the Z1)

I'm talking about listening to spotify on extreme quality over a 4G LTE connection, or simply speaking to somebody while driving hands free.

I have the digital noise cancelling headset (MDR-NC31EM) and there is NO crackling..NO issues at all.
Totally agree with krabappel2548 , fantastic sound quality..
I used the Bose noise cancelling headset and it's awesome. No issues. One thing i noticed, with the case you have to be sure the earphone jack is seated properly.

I don't have Spotify so I don't know what it means in terms of extreme quality. They could be upsampling a bad source and call it extreme quality.

Spotify extreme quality = 320kbps encoding. The best you can get for streaming right now.
No problems here, the noise cancelling headphones are excellent too,
I had that same crackling on my Lumia 800, I could hear it when on low volume or on pause, really annoying.
I think most people just don't notice.

Yh i have the same issue on my Z1. I checked with CM11 or AOSP and there is no crackling in low volume so this is definalty not a hardware problem.
To reduce this Crackling sound while ising Stock i download a custom Kernel like DoomLord's and use Pimp My Z1 (or any app you prefer) to turn down the gain the in the sound options. The downside is that the volume becomes lower. This method doesnt get rid of it completely but it does reduce it. I honestly dont even bother with stock anymore i just use CM11 or PA on my Z1.
BTW i think this Noise is called Sibilance. G3 users are experiencing the same problem.
Also turning off ClearAudio+ reduces the crackling sound.
Cracking insinuates that there is a popping noise. I hear none. As far as noise, yes. There is a faint hiss at low volume, extremely faint. Sony isn't exactly a leader in SNR but the audio isn't necessarily bad. Anyone who is using ClearAudio+ (which is total s***) shouldn't even comment on audio issues, definitely turn that off. Clear Phase on the old 4.2.2 ROM caused some definite extreme distortion and cracking over Bluetooth (but not the headphone jack) but that has been removed in the new ROM.
Sibilance is the hiss sound you hear when people make "S" sounds into the microphone. It can be really harsh, but usually reducing frequencies around 4-6KHz will reduce the problem. Sibilance is extremely prevalent in analog FM Radio.
I currently have an issue where sometimes I only get sound out of one of the noise cancelling headphones. I have to rotate the headphone socket in the jack to get sound to come out of both. Sometimes I also get crackling on my e10s when the phone is in my pocket. I think I have a faulty headphone jack as the MDR1 work perfectly on my Z3TC.
Speaking with Sony UK they asked me to do a repair on the phone which seemed to help a little but the problems still exist. I expect my headphone socket has some damage or has become faulty.
Iv noticed that when i plug in my phone to the soundsystem i have to crank the volume up allot higher to get the same soundlevel out of the spekers as other phones. Anyone have a solution to get the volume up out of the phone? (3.5mm output)

Headphone hissing sound

Is this headphone hissing sound common in all mi a1 phones or is there some hardware issue?
hiss
Is your phone plugged in and charging when you get the hiss? im thinking its a hardware fix. It's not easy to notice it, at 1st I thought mine was OK - but play any tune that has some lower volume parts and you can hear it. Also, play any MP3, pause it - and you will hear the high pitched whine / hiss - it sort of sounds like electronic interference of some sort. So the sound is always there just masked until quieter passages. To test , use headphones, turn up the volume, play an mp3, use YouTube - anything with audio, then PAUSE the item and listen - you will hear a second or so of the noise, then it will stop.

Just noticed this last night :/. I was using apple earpods. changed to sony headphones, and the issue is gone. weird though
I'm interested in buying this phone but I'm holding off on it because of this widespread headphone audio issue. I'm surprised that this is such an issue... especially since the phone's supposed to have a 10v amplifier and Xiaomi's marketing the phone's HD audio? WTF.
I just need to know if this is affecting only Indian models or all models.

What about this thread? https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/71xrqz/mi_a1_headphone_static/
Seems like a fairly serious issue. And I like my volume loud (90+) so if static is apparent at higher volumes, I'll be extremely upset.
I'm extremely skeptical about the audio quality of this device. I can totally see it being above average or devices from the same price segment but I'm sure it isn't something from another world. People seem to over praise it and I'm sure most of them are just considering loudness as audio quality.

with some half decent earphone this phone sounds great not just loud mate
I'm having same issue.
This might caused by the audio amplifier boosted the volume gain which increases the static noise and taints audio clarity.
Earphone/headphone which has more than 35ohm impedance and low sensitiviy pressure level below 98dB might have better chance with the boosted gain.
Even on ATH M40X, the background static noise is still noticeable when sound is played. *sigh
I wish the amplifier is disabled by default and could be enabled on demand from equalizer app.
@chrone Exactly, I'm willing to see how it will perform with biquads mod (if it is possible)

It's a great phone don't get me wrong but I don't know why xiaomi used a ""high end dac that needs high impedance headphones""
You have 2 options
1- get headphones with higher than 32 ohms
2- Lower treble and increase bass to drown the hissing (Use Viper4Android FX equalizer if you have root)
It can pretty much hide most hissing sounds
I think it is good thing they put DAC in Mi A1, it just makes phone more superior than other phones. We have great cam (Gcam), premium feel build, 3.5mm jack thanks to God and Dirac HD. I love quality sound and this DAC really makes difference to me. Come on people, you spent like $200 on a phone and now you can't buy $20 headphones with higher impedance...

nope, the funny thing is that using the best xiaomi headphones, like the piston 3 or the hybrid hd i get a so intense hissing sound that it is barely usable in calm situations, which is pretty much when i need it
so nope, spending more money is not what is needed
by the way, hybrid pro, impedance = 32 ohms, pistons 3 impedance = 32 ohms

Hope for a fix one day...
Hey, just to clear some things out. To fully eliminate hissing you will need hi-fi system that costs more than $300 and a HQ sound such as FLAC. Don't fool yourselves with this hissing thing, I bet 99% of you didn't noticed hissing at all on the other devices you had, but now when 1 person states that he/she hears hissing on MI A1, everyone else will hear it as you will focus more on hearing hissing noise. IF no one mentioned hissing all of you wouldn't be commenting about it. Yeah, hissing is a bit more present because of 10V DAC, but for example 32Ohms earbuds as mentioned above will fix it, but you must use better bitrate for listening, 128kbps MP3 isn't good enough. 256 or 320kbps is pretty much enough for this built-in DAC
The reason why you hear hissing is because your headphones are overpowered. Get something that isn't crap, like actual headphones instead of $20 earbuds.
My god, the problem is with the phone not the headphones. It should work with every headphones like the rest of phones do, and yes I have very good headphones and I have already tried to use this phone to watch videos but it's unbearable.

There is no problem. Xiaomi decided to put more powerful DAC. Someone will like it, someone will not, It's the same with leaving audio jack on smartphones, someone is ok with it someone is not. For me the sound on this phone is excellent.

Enhance, increase, boost headphone jack sound, speaker sound on Asus zenfone max pro

i dont know if any one noticed or not, but the sound quality is very very bad and level is very low, even cheap mobile from xiaomi ,and other brands have good quality sound output from 3.5 audio jack on their phone
Asus advertised about sound output, but believe me its very pathetic and not pleasing to hear music from earphone with this phone, guys just like there is a work around for camera, do we have anything to fix sound and music problem
please someone help how we can improve, what kind of mod we can apply to make sound loud and clear from headphone jack
hardware wise the phone is great but software wise worst,
Method 1
https://forum.xda-developers.com/as...themes/sideload-snapdragon-equalizer-t3826848
Method 2:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/as...rease-audio-quality-earphonepoweramp-t3822791
Yeah I noticed this too, coming from Redmi Note 4 the sound on Max Pro M1 sounds kind of... muffled? Minor annoyance when I play rhythm game on mobile, cause I kind of need to hear the tapping sound. And I'm on the latest build update, so that means they haven't fixed it yet (though thank god they fixed the multitouch otherwise I won't get this phone).
Speaker sound is loud & clear, but headphone output is truly pathetic. I'm using 4 sound mods, and still not satisfied. There's almost no bass.
any one know how to fix this, as we know asus is not going to do anything for it
I read on Asus forum that one user solve the headphone problem by clearing the cache partition. Don't know if it work for everyone. https://www.asus.com/zentalk/in/thread-217606-1-1.html

Audio quality

Hi experts,
I'm a long time Xiaomi user coming from Mi A1 thinking to buy this Mi 9T in US.
I'm not to happy with the A1 audio quality, especially over the headphones. I tried different brands, but not much luck. My GF has a note6pro, my family 5a..
Looking at the gsmarena site they are not impressed too with headphone test on this model, not sure it can be trusted though.
My main concern is the microphone and echo/noise canceling.
Can you guys give me a "real life review"?!
Check other thread, there many other (me included) confirm audio quality is suprisingly good, contrary to rumors. Maybe updates improved it?
I can say it is just as good as my amazing LG V20 with quad DAC! And the LG V series are the bechmark when it comes to android audio quality.
Only my problem is that volume is low, but AFAIK that is EU regulations, and should be easy to hack/fix, and would not apply anyway AFAIK for US version.
Just got my Mi 9T, and it is just STUNNING! A piece of art. I still catch myself staring at its beauty.
I would like to know about this too. And once again, there is NO EU regulation limiting volume. Manufacturers are meant to warn users when the volume is getting loud so they can confirm they want to proceed. If the phone companies can't read the rules, that's not the EU's fault. Enough with the fake news.
There's two modes of audio in the 9t "hi-fi" or regular.
I think that the option it's meant to switch from the audio chip modes, regular or performance (I think it's the best chip it has Qualcomm for audio, or at least they made it sound like that).
This performance mode uses more power, like 5 times more, and I am almost certain that gsmarena reviewed it without this setting on, that's why the poor results.
Look at this for more info of the chip.
https://www.qualcomm.com/products/wcd9375
Interesting for the consuption I didn't know ! and I can confirm that the sound quality is very good.
For the volume mine is very loud, impossible to put at max but it depend of your earphones impedance and many others things. (you have to play good quality sample music like FLAC and a good player like "AIMP" or "Poweramp" that can be "bit perfect"
Yes, I did a blind test against my creative Sound Blaster E1 (the phone supports DACs over USB C as well) and it is indistinguishable from that nice and proper DAC, IN THE HI-FI MODE. The source was lossless stuff from Tidal and the earbuds used were my trusty HiFiMan RE400a earbuds. I can verify that one has to listen at like two clicks below the full volume for everything to come through (i.e. the volume is a bit low, but baseline audio performance is excellent)

The source was lossless stuff from Tidal and the earbuds used were my trusty HiFiMan RE400a earbuds. I can verify that one has to listen at like two clicks below the full volume for everything to come through (i.e. the volume is a bit low, but baseline audio performance is excellent)

I would be also interested in the microphone handling in the topic of Audit quality. On Mi A1 ppl always complained when I was using a headset as the noise canceling part did not work. Same for Speaker mode..
Also why "Hi-Fi audio" is not on by default as it claims to increase audio quality.
Regarding the phone calls I can tell that my factory set 9T is poor. I cannot hear and understand what people say when calling. (Never had this on any phone before) Weird sound and some echo. And nowhere any audio settings in phone.

I don't have that problem. Phone calls are clear
Regarding audio quality over a headphone jack = it is worst audio quality I have ever tested from any smartphone be honest. I also know people who see it the same way. I went to Mi9T from Pocophone and never had this issue there - poco is still in my house, I gave it to my wife so I can really compare between the two. Tried both normal and hi-fi modes on Mi9T.
Audio over BT is fine on other hand - thats most important for me
I was testing audio quality on SONY WH-1000MX3
What could be the reason for this I dont know. The audio chip should be great. I have tried many versions of MIUI as well.
Tested right now with Beyerdynamic dt770 Pro 250 Ohm version. My source file is from deezer to have a better idea of an average quality of a song someone might listen to.
Hi-Fi is enabled and i can say that audio quality is pretty good. I wouldn't compare it to LG Quad Dac but the phone is powering 250 Ohm studio headphones very well.
People usually evaluate audio quality by the amount of bass. IMO its good enough.
@Nexus5-32GB I have the same impression. I came from a Zuk Z2 Pro and audio quality is poor. Bass is OK but mids and treble are too high. I'm using the same Senheiser MX-30G as always and the difference is noticiable even in Hi-Fi. My wife's Redmi 4A have better sound.
I am using poweramp music player to listen to music, and the audio quality is just superb! Previously I used google play music with mi sound enhancer and the audio quality is pretty mediocre compared to poweramp.
I tested hifi with AudioTechnica M50. It does make a difference and I feel it is a lot louder so much that I'm afraid of pushing volume to max. I like my hearing very much. You don't need portable amps with this phone for the most part. It's probably not audiophile approved or something like that but it sounds very full.

What player are you using?
Using Google play the sound it's ****.
Using Tidal it's heaven, don't know why.
Exactly, if you use it right the sound is very good but if you listen mp3 with googlemusic, sure the best earphones can't do anything for you

I don't think it's a player issue 'cause I always use the same player. I always compare the sound using Spotify. I use Spotify on all my family devices.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense, I know, but in my case that happend, playing throug play music was horrible and understandable that people complain about it, but with Tidal it's beyond anything i've heard.
Other users have notified that they too notice when playing through play music.
actually is awesome

Hi experts,
I'm a long time Xiaomi user coming from Mi A1 thinking to buy this Mi 9T in US.

Coming from a zte axon 7 I was really doubtful about the sound quality, but I'm impressed about it, it has a hifi logo on the box and sounds really good, with a couple of good headphones I can't listen no difference with the zte axon 7, also had a poco f1 and it sounds a thousand times better than the poco
