Contrast (true blacks) - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Real Life Review

How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Being AMOLED, black can only be black

Interestingly enough, the blacks on my tab s2 are deeper than the s4 but you see a tad more detail in the s4 because of this.

You basically said your tab s2 screen was "more turned off" than the tab s4...

Touche. I guess what I meant to say was that the screens are calibrated differently perhaps. If you get a chance to them side by side you'll know what I mean.

The s2, s3 and s4 are all amoled. Black is Black. Color range is another story. I think the s4 has the best color range/detail of the 3, but all 3 have very nice screens.

I had the Tab S 10.5, Tab S2 2016, S3 and now the S4. I thought the colors were punchiest on the S2 (and i loved the little snaps on the back for attaching the OEM cover).
S3 was somewhere in between, but closer to the S2 than the S4.
S4 looks a tad washed out but it is the brightest. It "looks" more LCD-like compared to its preddcessors' AMOLED displays. I am very happy with the S4's battery life & performance.

They may have just toned down the saturation a bit so it's not over the top but still very punchy. The screen looks perfect to me

Dialing down the over saturated colors

At first I was put off by the Galaxy Tab 10.1's gaudy and over saturated colours. However, I discovered that on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with TouchWiz that if you switch the Screen settings from "Standard" or "Dynamic" to "Film" you get much more natural and accurate colours.
I'm fairly critical about colour accuracy in my line of work so that was one of the first things I noticed about the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Most people applaud it for being vibrant and colourful, but to me the colours were inaccurate and artificial. Now I am much happier with the display.
its still a little off with the reds and whites but better than everything too saturated
i also calibrate my monitors for editing photograpgs, if only theres an app to calibrate the screen or a calibrated display mode.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
I keep mine on Movie mode. The white are way too blown out on the other settings.
I also don't like the over saturated screen, it makes people in TV shows look like they spend too long in sun tan booth.
Along with mode change, I found select "Auto adjust screen power" help with balancing the over saturated screen.

[Q] Galaxy S2 Display vs. Galaxy Note Display

I'm sure many of you have migrated from the S2 to the Note,
How would compare just the display? Any differences in quality and performance?
Note's display would not disapoint a S2 owner in any way. It's a big improvement.
even though it uses pentile matrix?

pentile it is noticeable but a very short range and looking for it, the screen its better than the S2 one. Crisp text, more resolution, more info on screen.
I have both, the screen is much better in the note. Text is much clearer both zoomed out, and zoomed in
The note looks better.....and its huge!
Its often with very small text i notice the pentile. And with strange mix of colors it can look very strange. Think it was some red/pinkish text on a brown background that just looked bizzare when it was small.
So when im browsing the web i think its quite noticeable.
Other then that, in movies, games, pictures and the android interface i dont notice it.
Its like the s2 panel but bigger and more high res.
But... of course i wish they would have made it a real rgb panel. Because it is in fact noticeable sometimes. But its not a big enough reason to not get the Note

It will be a big enough reason to upgrade to Note 2 when it comes out though.
but the RGB is a fail on the S2, just read the number of problems users are reporting; only fix samsung can give in this case are firmware updates.
I get ALOT more color banding with the Note vs. my S2. To the point of having to be careful what backgrounds I use..

Not sure what people were complaining about the SGS2 display; I've had no problems whatsoever with mine, and I bought it about 1month after it started shipping.
Anyways, compared to the SGS2, the Note's display has:
1. More obvious colour banding... but that's probably because it's a larger screen and the banding is due to Android 2.x limitations as the same banding is there on the SGS2.
2. A moire pattern visible when viewing a uniform grey colour background (ie. the notifications dropdown).
3. Sharper (obviously, due to higher resolution)
4. Less vibrant.

SIII's Pentile display

I have a galaxy SII and i compare the screen with a galaxy nexus of my friend to see the difference between 800x480 and 1280x720.
We notice the SII has a better detail everywhere youtube,movie..colors are much brighter too!!only texts is sharper in nexus..
I can't understand why samsung launched SIII with super amoled pentile display and make it(probably) worst than SII?super amoled plus is faarrrr wayyyyy a head...what is your opinion?

Look at my signature and i will tell you right now that Note's screen blows away Galaxy SII's
Oddly enough, i prefer Note's screen over the Nexus. Maybe because of the ability to adjust the color temp or the fact that it's larger

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! It's frowned upon to state your opinion on the SIII screen / phone / hardware in any way, shape or form, in a negative manner in the SIII forum. Even if it is just your own opinion. Will you never learn!?!?!?
But in all seriousness, Google how to start up an online blog and I'll gladly subscribe.

I think you need to do tons of research before you come and make such claims.
SGS3 =/= Galaxy Nexus display wise.
Manufacturing of the SGS3's display has been improved upon in comparison to GN in addition to the different light levels, the SGS3 uses Gorilla Glass 2 which is thinner giving it less light diffusion in the glass giving it better view ability.

The problem isn't people giving their "opinion" but people claiming their opinions as 'facts" with no evidence. The OP is obviously assuming the GN and the SGS3 have the same kind of screen otherwise why wouldn't he post this in the GN forum?

+1, went to a phone store today, took a good look at the Note's screen, it's nothing short of amazing. I'm not afraid anymore of the S3's screen, since it basicly will be a smaller version of the Note's screen. Also a few good reviews showed me that the S3's screen is one of the best ever.
I love it how human's work. They hear the word "pentile" and like sheep everybody starts saying it's "so bad, so bad", while many probably don't even know what it is. This entire pentile madness needs to stop. Just take a look at the screen and if you like it, buy it. If not, don't.
I loved it how a website that reviewed the S3 already gave the phone to some people and lied to them that it's "not pentile", they loved it an all (while they also go crazy when knowing a screen is pentile, they say they can see pixels and ****). Then afterwards, the guy told those people it's actually pentile xD I have a strong feeling it's all placebo effect.
Yet another pointless and poorly written thread to discuss one of the least important aspects of a PHONE...whether the HIGH DEFINITION screen on a PHONE is good enough for you to get through your day. First world problems to the extreme.

Least important? I beg to differ
On touchscreen device, nothing is more important than the screen itself
I was worried about the screen after reading random people complain about it here, after reading some reviews and looking at the screen comparison here i dont see any reason to worry.

I guess the difference in brightness could be contributed, partially at least, to the fact that the S3 has Gorilla Glass2, which can be used in thinner sheets without sacrificing strenght.

You know exactly what I meant. You mean to say that if the HD screen on your phone isn't as sharp as a high end IPS LCD then that somehow limits your ability to use your touchscreen device? Pure rubbish. This is a PHONE, not a digital movie screen.

No, it just makes it more vieawable. The glass has nothing to do with the brightness. They are different factors.

Thank you so much buddy. I pre-ordered one but when i saw this post i was truly worried about the Screen. I am using Galaxy s2 at the moment. After looking at the pictures in mobile-review i confidently say Galaxy s3's display is the best of all in terms of color saturation and Vividness.
Guys please take a look at the sample pics. I don't see any reason to worry S3 has the best display of all. I think most us are worried about retaining the saturated colors in S2, yes it is retained. See the images.
the thing is gnexus has lower brightness than s3 so it might be the cause. If not you are one among the few rare candidates who can see the pentile matrix directly without any lens, so its better for you to stay away from s3.
btw does thing thing need a new thread?

Well i cut this from Cornings site:
"Corning Gorilla Glass 2 enables up to a 20 percent reduction in glass thickness, while maintaining the industry-leading damage resistance, toughness, and scratch resistance customers have come to expect from the world’s most widely deployed cover glass. The thinner Gorilla Glass 2 enables slimmer and sleeker devices, brighter images, and greater touch sensitivity. These benefits can provide electronics manufacturers with superior design flexibility as they address consumer demand for increasingly high-performing, touch-sensitive, and durable mobile devices."
If Gorillaglass 2 allows for a 20% reduction in thickness compared to the original Gorillaglass, one would think it should increase the brightness a bit. I'm not saying its the whole story, but they do infact mention that it enables brighter images in the exerpt above.

Is the Note 2 Screen inferior to the S3?

My brother owns an S3 and I own a note 2. When we put it side by side, his S3 does indeed look sharper than my Note 2. A tech savvy friend of mine told me that it was because the S3 has a smaller screen with the same number of pixels as the Note 2. Therefore, the S3 is sharper in that sense as there are more pixels per inch of the phone.
The Note 2 on the other hand is supposed to use an rgb matrix pattern as opposed to the S3 which uses a pentile display. RGB is supposed to be superior to the pentile method for color reproduction and sharpness so in that sense the Note 2 actually makes up for a bit of lost ground when compared to the S3 having more pixels per inch of the screen.
There's a detailed comparison here..
Anyway, thats about as far as I could understand from my friend but from my own personal experience, yes you will notice the S3 to be sharper somewhat when compared to the Note 2 but the difference isn't very glaring either unless you put them side by side and start nit picking on each part of the screen.

I have both devices and it's fair to say this is a spot on explanation, the Note 2 feels softer one tip is try reducing your ro.sf.lcd_density to 300 on the note 2 makes everything a bit smaller and a bit sharper IMO.
SIII does definitely look sharper because of the above said reason.
I like the note 2 screen better becaus it's not pentile and to me looks sharper then the s3 screen.

+1. To my eyes, the S3 screen doesn't look near as good as the Note 2's. I think the Note 2 has the best mobile display at this time. The only thing that could make it better is if it was 1080p with the RGB arrangement. Hopefully we get the bump in res on the Note 3.

Yea seriously are people getting different panels for their S3's than my previous one?
I had an international GT-I9300 S3, and before that I had the international GT-N7000 Note 1.
Out of the 3, the Note 2 is by far the best display, followed by the Note 1 and last would be my S3.
When I switched from the Note 1 to the S3, I immediately was a little disappointed, the S3's screen just wasn't as sharp as the Note 1 and the Note 2's display is far superior the the Note 1.
Tech OCD rears it's ugly head yet again.
The screen on the Note II is stunning. End of thread.
Note screen it's nicer, I've had both and it finely is sharper for text and the colours seem nicer

All made by Samsung
S3 or Note 2 , their screens are all made by samsung, just RGB is different from pentile
But in my opinion these two screens look almost the same

Is my low contrast the same issue as your washout?

Purchased a C9O yesterday. Out of the box I immediately noticed the screen's low contrast in comparison to my Galaxy S2. It doesn't produce a deep black and the blue looks kinda purple-ish. Is this the same screen washout problem that's been so often talked about? And is there a fix to this issue (if it's even an issue) or did I get a defect? Or is it simply because I am too accustomed to GS2's overly-saturated colors?

galaxy s2 is very over saturated.
So make a pictures of the screen from a few angles and post them here.
Also this lcd can never be as black as your galaxy s2 display since it's a lcd instead of a amoled.
I can't get an accurate representation of the colors as these shots do look more saturated than viewing them from the actual screen.
Looks fine here, you can try to disable nvidia prism which is always a good thing (more battery comsumption but no buggy washout stuff).
But I tihnk it's just fine since it looks identical to my display, I also got a C90 after exchangeing my version from a older batch(screen lift)
Thanks. I agree those shots do look fine on a PC monitor. I guess the best way is to compare it with a store floor demo unit.
Would the Nvidia Prism fix require rooting of the device?
i think it looks fine when comparing my n7 to my e4gt it makes me realize how oversturated the epic touches display is. My tablet to me looks more correct color wise than my phone
