Poor sound quality - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Just got my 6gb Variant today in grey colour, the screen is a bit too warm for my taste and turning it cooler makes it look ugly, also I think brightness is not as good as note 5 pro. it has purer whites and gets way too brighter than this phone. But I guess I can live with it given stock android is way better than ****ty miui. What is bothering me is poor audio quality in headphones and over Bluetooth too. I'm coming from iPhone and redmi note 3 and comparatively, they both get very loud than this also sound quality is superior to this phone.. I can live with other shortcomings like the poor camera (hopefully gcam will fix most of the issues there) and warmer screen but the sound quality is very important. Is there a way to fix this? or I'll have to learn to live with it :\

Root and instal v4a.
PS: For me sound quality is good even though its not loud but enough for my tastes.

I was so busy unlocking bootloader and rooting I forgot to check the main function of it lol just tried calling and it works perfectly on my phone. I would not install any roms on this phone, buying a phone with stock android was to avoid flashing roms, as almost all roms have some issues. I'm just going to use stock firmware with root, adblocker and gcam and that's about it. I want stability more than the features. try going back to stock android with a locked bootloader and all. if that still doesn't fix it, get a replacement from Flipkart maybe there is a hardware issue with your device. The only sound issue I've is, it is not as loud as iPhone or my Redmi Note 3 but rest seems to be in order. Hope this helps. Cheers.

I faced the same issue, the audio volume and quality was low on bluetooth (Headset/Car Audio). Flashed Firehound and that problem is resolved, though the sound is still a bit bright for my taste.

I am using RR ROM since I got this device.
Didn't check call quality for bluetooth issue in stock ROM.
I did my research and found out that call quality may get better after 3 or 4 days in stock.
Don't know about custom ROMs though.
I am going back to stock after couple of hours.
Let me check and confirm the bug.

Everyone please answer the poll so we can get an accurate idea of what Desire HD users think about the external speakers.
I've read so many post on how bad their speaker is, but I must say, either I have bad ears, or I'm lucky, and got one with a great speaker. No problem making it loud enough, and I can even make it too loud. All without any crackling, or distortion. I love it!

I guess it may be a 1st batch issue then. If your speakers really are good it would mean that all our speakers are faulty. If this is the case it's a warranty issue, so we could get it fixed.
Could you make a video of the sound, preferably comparing it to another phone?

Yep. I post it as soon as I can.
I can hardly wait!
I have a DHD from the first batch and the external speaker sound is not loud enough (even on max.) and the sound quality is poor.
Not happy.
I'm getting similar sound quality from an over 2 year old TouchPro.
Contacted HTC support and all they advised was to remove battery reboot and check volume was set to maximum.
Told them that had been done - no reply since...........

Already posted in the other thread, but considering I registered here just to complain about this speaker, I figured why not post again here
Speaker reminds me of an old Nokia that I sent back within the first week of receiving it. Except it's worse. Tinny and crackly. HTC can do far better. I'm still undecided as to whether I'll keep the phone as a result. I've ordered a bluetooth headset just to deal with this issue, but now I read that it's having problems with the BT headsets too!
can't you use DSPmanager and increase the volume of the loud speaker? We have full root after all.

I haven't tried that, but I have tried PowerAmp music player to boost music.
The result was as I expected: hardly any increase in volume, at the expense of crackly distorted bad sound quality - worse than it was at "normal" levels.
The strange thing is this:
Some apps sounds louder and some is hard to hear.
Have all volume sliders at max.
An MP3 used as alarm sounds higher then one played trough the mediaplayer.
Isnt this strange?
I have been missing calls at work so i bought a Samsung Bluetooth speaker BS300. It has just landed today. It is small and thin and also the sound quality is excellent and loud. I am waiting for the battery now to charge and i will leave a few comments later when i have made and received a few calls with it
I found the speaker was quite poor and sold the phone. Not just because of the speaker, was more that I just didn't feel it was a significant upgrade over the normal Desire.
Anyway, before I sold the DHD I compared the sound against my Desire, a Samsung i8910 and a Nokia N95. Even the old Nokia sounded better than both HTC phones and the Samsung just blew everything away.
I understand there's a lot of sound technology in the phone, but it only works if using headphones. Speaker is just a token affair as far as I'm concerned.
Just to make sure,
I hope there are no complaints related with the quality of the sound with a good set of headphones like Sennheisser or something like that, right?

I don't have a good video camera, and nobody has one to lend me. I tried several phones that have video, but they all come out bad. I'm working on it. If I can't find one this week, I'm just going to buy one. I can always use it for other stuff. Don't worry I didn't forget about it.

Shame, the rest of the phone is great

Thanks for taking the effort, as this could be a major development.
If your speaker really is very good, we can show this to HTC, and they will have to say that this is a warranty issue.
Personally I do really hope it is, because like london_euphoria said: the rest of the phone is great, it's only the external speaker that is a drawback.

Video sound quality - pretty bad

Hi all
Did not come across any threads about this yet, surprisingly!
I was recording video out in a nightclub, and was very disappointed to find that the music sounded horrible. Never had such problem on my HTC one when recording at concerts or clubs.
Here is the link of the video, I uploaded on youTube
http://youtu.be/SMpa7rumrHY
Otherwise, the OnePlus has been awesome so far!
Trance family, you listen to Markus Schulz? Love trance! Sucks about the sound, you on stock app?
Sound quality in general when it comes to recording nightclubs/gigs/concerts are pretty bad with the bass etc etc.
Not to mention "Turn It Up" is a song that involves a lot of bass and drops.
Try it in a closed atmosphere like at home and test the quality of the sound.
Ensure audio codec is AAC as well.

haha yeh man love markus Schulz! one of my fav trance DJs
yeh stock camera app, running 33R stock and Franco 20 kernel.
I noticed this as well. I really doesn't take a lot to distort the audio with OPO (and surprisingly when I had my Samsung Note 2 and ran a CM based rom I had this problem as well, using stock samsung camera / rom not a problem).
Not sure if this is phone related or just the camera app/rom combo.
I do have a sub in my car but I have recorded clearly with my old Note 2 but OPO it distorts like a mofo. It's quite embarrassing.

Damm thats a bad mic...it sounds horrible
I wanted to make the switch from the m7 too,but i do record sometimes at concerts and clubs...And the htc m7 does this perfect.
So this is a no go for me this oneplus one,A pitty):
The early m7s had dual membrane mics specifically for recording in very loud concert environments. Some supply issue came up with the manufacturer and they had to stop supplying to htc because of nokia.

Yep I remember that when the M7 came out, it was a bit of a fuss!
Ah familiar issue.
Went to a party last week and recorded some videos, as soon as the bass drops you only hear crackling noises on the video.
Friend recorded with his iphone and the recorded audio sounded a LOT better.
I also tried to cover the microphone to see if that helped but it made no difference.

has anybody found a fix for this? will changing to a different rom solve the problem? cyanogen just dont wanna fix this problem. its been a reported bug for ages now. even before the OPO.
I m also facing the same problem, please let us know if anyone find a fix
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app
This problem can be fixed with the Boeffla-Kernel for OPO, but they need the technical documentaion of the "WDC9320" audio codec.

Does somebody know whether it for it already a solution has given?
Found this on the OP forums
Code:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/audio-clipping-in-loud-environments.108129/
:
"So ive tried heaps of things to try and fix this bug, one thing that may have worked is downloading this free app from the app store
Code:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grace.microphone&hl=en
and setting mic gain to 0. i have done this and the audio quality has increased 100% and is comparable with the iphone."
Most likely a ****ty mic on the oneplus, nothing to do with the software.
HTC one uses unlicensed mic from Nokia, which is far superior.
Bump
Does anyone know whether this bug is present in Oxygen OS or not?

Noise reduction/cancellation on Lolipop 5.1.1

Hi there,
Firstly i'm sorry if there are any other posts related to this subject, i've searched and i found no results.
I've just purchased a new toy "Note 4" Vodafone Romania. I absolutely love this phone. Usually when i buy a new phone i'm testing to see if there are any quality problems left over by the Samsung Quality Department.
The only thing that i've managed to find and it really bothers me is that in call quality is quite low due to noise reduction not working!? I've tried to check/uncheck dialog box for many times, restart the device, clear phone app cache and data nothing seems to work. Altough all the mics seems to work correctly in all recording modes terefore i don't think it's a hardware issue.
Does anyone experience this issue? Or could you please tell me if i have a faulty unit or it's just a software issue that can be fixed by Marshmallow perhaps?
Thank you.
the call quality on my note 4 is very good and loud (compared to my nexus 4). What 5.1.1 in particular is your phone on?

Hi,
I also experience a clear and loud voice reception on my note 4. The problem is with noise reduction setting, the problems is on the other side of the line, in loud environments the person who am i talking with can hear me well, but also can hear the noise in the background pretty well so it seems that with or without noise reduction active it has the same result background noise isn't suppressed.
I come from Note 3 where even in very loud environments the noise reduction was acting flawless, on the other line i was heard like sitting on the couch in a "zen - place".
The mics are working flawless, so i suppose it's a software issue.
Any dev. that could help me?
Thanks.

I can't say anything about it, I used loudspeaker for call for only one time. Loudspeaker worked fine though.
Flash dolby n speaker sound will be loud then
Got the phone and I am using it for quite a few days. The loudspeaker is fine. It's not too low as mentioned in reviews. It's lower than some smartphones like Moto G. But it is still loud enough to fill the room with Asus audio wizard. I found this phone better than Moto G in many ways and for the price I have to say I am impressed with it. Only downside is the Camera which is average in inadequate lighting but hey for the price I paid I really can't complain. ZenUI is awesome. I am coming from Touchwiz which is crap and laggy compared to ZenUI. Call quality is also really good. Overall Excellent phone. For those having doubts about loudspeaker's capability just don't doubt and GO FOR IT. I recommend this phone for the low price and the quality and functionality it provides
Edit: I forgot to mention the amazing battery life I am getting on ZFL2. 5 hours of SOT and 2 days standby which will only get better when it gets Android 6.0 with DOZE. One of the best battery life I have seen in an Android phone.

[Video] Any way to stop mic clipping in loud environments? - Such as a live band?

I play in a band....When I record us playing live, or other bands, it doesn't distort, but there is a horrible clipping noise that sounds like a "quack" or "quirk" noise when the audio threshold is breached. It was like this on MM and I was hoping Nougat would be better, but there is no change.
On my last 5 phones, this NEVER happened (Nexus 6p, Moto X Pure, Galaxy S7 Edge, S6, and HTC One M9). Actually, I haven't really had this problem since 2013. My other band members iPhones are perfectly clear as well.... But my recordings are virtually useless due to this horrible noise every few seconds. Regular, everyday stuff is fine - it's just loud band settings.
Anyone know of anything that might help? I'm on the stock ROM, but rooted if I need to change anything?
Here is an example - a 25 second clip of my band on YouTube:
It sounds like the mic is being over driven and clipping/distorting. How close is the phone to the bass?

The bass is completely on the opposite side of the stage, about 25 feet away in this video. We didn't use subs at this gig, and my phone was about 5 feet behind the main speakers sitting on a towel on a concrete floor.
To me, it doesn't appear to be the bass.. It's when the drummer is hitting the snare, which is opposite of when the bass is usually hitting. The snare is usually the loudest thing on the stage.
I've tried recording at every show since I've had my phone around August or September (23 - 25 shows)....I've had it at all different points behind the speakers, in front of the speakers, on the bass side, behind everything, in peoples hands..... ect... It just doesn't like loud music.
I was wondering if there was a way to up the sensitivity of the mic, or DB where it is rated?
I've been recording my band/s for the past 7 or 8 years (ever since the iPhone 4s days). Had some that distorted bad, but usually I could tell it was the bass. But ever since I had my first HTC M7, about 2013, I haven't had any issues until now with the A7.
Did you find any solution? I go to live shows a lot, and sometimes I like to record one or two songs, I used to have Motorola g4 plus and the audio was OK, but I just bought the g5 plus and the audio is totally garbage! :crying:

No, but I haven't tried for a few weeks - since updating to 7.1.1, but it was this way on 7.0, so I don't foresee it any better.

I can say I don't have this problem, I have been into some loud environments and even recorded a Big Band and the sound was fine; probably I will go tonight to a club or something and can test as well, but as for the tests I have done before regarding this topic, I haven't found any issue. Hmmmm, this is the 2nd Axon 7 I've had - and both had the same issue. Maybe it's just louder behind the speakers?
I may try setting it out in front, 10 or 20 feet back and see how that turns out? It still irritates me a little, because my other phones didn't do this when I'd record the same way and place. Even going back 4 or 5 years ago to my HTC M7.

Just as I promised, I recorded a video yesterday night in a loud environment; I was no more than 1-2 from one of the speakers, and I think the quality is pretty decent:

P.D.: The video seems a little blurry, but I didn't even focus anything, I just grabbed the phone out and start to record to test the audio and I didn't care about image quality.
I've recorded live bands and the sound has been fine, far better than on any previous phone, but I haven't tried with version 7.

Same
Well, I recorded more video of my band this weekend. I believe the issue comes form the side of the stage I'm on required the microphone to point "towards" the stage, instead of away.....So it's extra sensitive. I recorded half a song with it one way, flipped it over and finished out the song. The half with the mic pointed away only clipped one time. The half with it pointed towards us, clipped about ever time my drummer hit the snare.
Still not as clear as my drummers wife and her S7, but livable now.
I also read you can put scotch tape over the mic and it'll help too?
[UPDATE]
Mid- last week, I made the switch from stock, to LOs.... Just tested the recording, and the problems I was experiencing in stock, with clipping, don't exist in LOs... Not sure why, but they're all gone!
I recorded several songs tonight, at a louder volume, with no clipping at all.
Just throwing this out there.
