[Video] Any way to stop mic clipping in loud environments? - Such as a live band? - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

I play in a band....When I record us playing live, or other bands, it doesn't distort, but there is a horrible clipping noise that sounds like a "quack" or "quirk" noise when the audio threshold is breached. It was like this on MM and I was hoping Nougat would be better, but there is no change.
On my last 5 phones, this NEVER happened (Nexus 6p, Moto X Pure, Galaxy S7 Edge, S6, and HTC One M9). Actually, I haven't really had this problem since 2013. My other band members iPhones are perfectly clear as well.... But my recordings are virtually useless due to this horrible noise every few seconds. Regular, everyday stuff is fine - it's just loud band settings.
Anyone know of anything that might help? I'm on the stock ROM, but rooted if I need to change anything?
Here is an example - a 25 second clip of my band on YouTube:

It sounds like the mic is being over driven and clipping/distorting. How close is the phone to the bass?

The bass is completely on the opposite side of the stage, about 25 feet away in this video. We didn't use subs at this gig, and my phone was about 5 feet behind the main speakers sitting on a towel on a concrete floor.
To me, it doesn't appear to be the bass.. It's when the drummer is hitting the snare, which is opposite of when the bass is usually hitting. The snare is usually the loudest thing on the stage.
I've tried recording at every show since I've had my phone around August or September (23 - 25 shows)....I've had it at all different points behind the speakers, in front of the speakers, on the bass side, behind everything, in peoples hands..... ect... It just doesn't like loud music.
I was wondering if there was a way to up the sensitivity of the mic, or DB where it is rated?
I've been recording my band/s for the past 7 or 8 years (ever since the iPhone 4s days). Had some that distorted bad, but usually I could tell it was the bass. But ever since I had my first HTC M7, about 2013, I haven't had any issues until now with the A7.

Did you find any solution? I go to live shows a lot, and sometimes I like to record one or two songs, I used to have Motorola g4 plus and the audio was OK, but I just bought the g5 plus and the audio is totally garbage! :crying:

No, but I haven't tried for a few weeks - since updating to 7.1.1, but it was this way on 7.0, so I don't foresee it any better.
My friends with iPhones (6-7) and Galaxy S6/S7's all sound fine.... Mine doesn't when recording something at high volume.

I almost thought about trading for a LG v20 (I found on Craigslist) or upgrading to the S8 when it's out, but I really like this phone. I'm going to try a different camera or something?

I can say I don't have this problem, I have been into some loud environments and even recorded a Big Band and the sound was fine; probably I will go tonight to a club or something and can test as well, but as for the tests I have done before regarding this topic, I haven't found any issue. My device is A2017G.

Hmmmm, this is the 2nd Axon 7 I've had - and both had the same issue. Maybe it's just louder behind the speakers?
I may try setting it out in front, 10 or 20 feet back and see how that turns out? It still irritates me a little, because my other phones didn't do this when I'd record the same way and place. Even going back 4 or 5 years ago to my HTC M7.

Just as I promised, I recorded a video yesterday night in a loud environment; I was no more than 1-2 from one of the speakers, and I think the quality is pretty decent:
https://goo.gl/photos/XXkdG1Z1M4ja1mAd8
P.D.: The video seems a little blurry, but I didn't even focus anything, I just grabbed the phone out and start to record to test the audio and I didn't care about image quality.

I've recorded live bands and the sound has been fine, far better than on any previous phone, but I haven't tried with version 7.

I tried a couple different cameras from the playstore, one was no different than stock, one was horribly worse.

Same

Well, I recorded more video of my band this weekend. I believe the issue comes form the side of the stage I'm on required the microphone to point "towards" the stage, instead of away.....So it's extra sensitive. I recorded half a song with it one way, flipped it over and finished out the song. The half with the mic pointed away only clipped one time. The half with it pointed towards us, clipped about ever time my drummer hit the snare.
Still not as clear as my drummers wife and her S7, but livable now.
I also read you can put scotch tape over the mic and it'll help too?

[UPDATE]
Mid- last week, I made the switch from stock, to LOs.... Just tested the recording, and the problems I was experiencing in stock, with clipping, don't exist in LOs... Not sure why, but they're all gone!
I recorded several songs tonight, at a louder volume, with no clipping at all.
Just throwing this out there.

Is the audio when recording and shooting video fixed?

The S4 and Note 3 have this issue, random and quite annoying popping when recording audio. I was really disappointed when I heard it on the Note 3! Hopefully it has been fixed on the S5!
Can anyone confirm whether or not it's there?
popping? my s4 never had any pops. it recorded amazing audio.

We'll see when I get mine. I'll let you know. But I think, it'll not be there for some S4 and Note 3, there's no popping when they record.
I've had numerous S4 and Note III samples through my hands and they have this issue. It's not an isolated issue. My Note II, HTC One, G2, iPhone 3/4/5s etc. have no such issues whatsoever. Normally I record video and audio separately but the argument (the best camera is the one you have with you) applies to a cell phone to capture things as they happen, unplanned. It's annoying to have these sounds in the audio.

weird i never experienced such thing on s3, n2, s4..
like I said, I've recorded plenty of guitar videos with my s4, through a Marshall dsl100 stack, which is loud and bassy, and it never ever ever had a problem with audio. it was always so clear and detailed, albeit only 128kbps. my g2 has that horrible underwater wishy-washy sound that makes the video camera unusable. I've never once seen audio artifacting on the s4. I had the snapdragon version, maybe you had the exynos?

Yes the problem is not with loud music like other devices which hard clip especially on kick drum hits...
This popping noise is most common when it's very quiet like recording at night with just the crickets outside...
And yes the audio was completely unusable on the G2 for me as well, if you recorded video in a loud cafe, no problem. But as soon as you went into a quiet area the gain levelers started getting really confused and there was all kinds of problems with sound. Ashame too since its camera (G2) was so nice...
Back to the S5, I have one in hand and while I have not put it through the gears my preliminary findings reveal a completely changed recording from the S4/Note3 hardware. The AGC does tend to bring up the levels higher when ambient sound changes but at least there's no nasty pops. The pops on the S4/Note3 can be removed with a click/decrackle plugin on most DAW software but they shouldn't be in there in the first place. This looks promising.
The video low light performance looks very good, I was shining a focused down aspheric torch (flashlight) around the pasture at long range and the screen was 100% black except where the beam was hitting objects at hundreds of yards away (barn, trees, etc.) and the detail looked shockingly good! I viewed the video on my Macbook Pro w/ retina display so it's a valid test.
Have not tried to see if it's IR filtered. Tonight we'll have the burn barrels going, that's the best IR test I know of without taking it to the lab.
These processors are so powerful it would be nice if they gave us the option of lossless audio recording and even a RAW photo option, although these tiny sensors would need a LOT of post processing to make the images useable. Still, however I always find that RAW+ Photoshop CS6 post processing looks better than the camera's aggressive post processing tuned for speed and convenience. With a 128GB microSD card, RAW+JPG would be fine.

Yep, I have several concerts recorded in 2012 and the audio clips worse than these kids with their pyramid amp powered systems playing hip hop with the bass turned to 11!
That's why I always record audio and video on separate devices. They won't allow a real camera (no cams with removable lenses that is!) in most venues...

I can confirm the popping is present in my unit too. Had it on S4 as well. It tends to occur less when the sound is turned to minimum while recording.

So... How about them front facing stereo speakers!

I see tons of threads on a ton of topics, everyone interested in fast charging, fast updates, fingerprints, Type C USB ports, but is anyone add excited as me to have some front facing stereo speakers?
After playing with an HTC One a few years ago I've wanted a phone with them so bad, but couldn't go back to HTC after the Rezound.
Imagine, no more cupping your hands around one side or the other to try to make the sound come to the front. Stereo sound instead of in mumbled mono mess out of one speaker.
Come on, somebody else has to be excited about this right!
Post any hands on's you can find about them talking about the stereo speaker quality or your personal experience with Front Facing Speakers on a phone.
I think a lot of us are coming from the Nexus 6, which also had front facing stereo speakers. After having them, there's no way I could go back to a rear facing speaker.
I have a Nexus 6 and a HTC M8 as backup.. IMO the Nexus 6, after switching to a custom ROM, delivers better sound..
If the Nexus 6p is the same or better, I'm more than happy..
Having just got my lg g3 I was so in love I skipped the Nexus 6. Lucky bastard. Lol
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I just hope the Nexus 6P does not have the normalizing audio problem that the Nexus 6 has... If so those nice front facing speakers won't mean squat.
After having a nexus 6 and a moto x pure(style 2015 - returned), I hope the same thing as the poster above. However, I will say that the issue with the pure is 100% a normalization and gain issue. In the pure you get this bad crackle at the end from the gain being set too high. I think this was done on motorola's side. Luckily with the dev on this phone I'm almost certain that defect will be non-existent or at lease fixable thanks to xda devs and others around the world.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't care.
I would actually prefer the speakers on the edge to leave the face clean and reduce the overall size.

I returned a X Pure as well but mine had 0 speaker issues. The front facing speakers were AMAZING! So amazing that I overlooked them after the first few hours and it just felt like that's how all phone speakers are to be configured LOL. It sounded so good that I hardly used my Galaxy Tab S and consumed most of my media on the X Pure because I didn't need to use headphones and they sounded so good just playing out, so I'm hoping the 6P at least equals this. This also makes your ringtones sound really good if you choose an MP3 but notifications can be quite loud if you don't configure their volume adequately.

This! Was one of the big selling points to get the Nexus 6! I now could not be without them!!
I think they are nice but if I'm listening to something it's usually on my Bluetooth speaker regardless. So nice but it's not a big deal for me.
Least important feature on the phone. Nothing is more annoying than some schrute on the train watching something on his phone with his front facing speakers blasting. Nobody wants to listen to your stuff. I'll stick with headphones personally. Sound is light years better and I'm not annoying anyone.
Coming from an xperia with great stereo speaker, I hope i'll not be disappoint.

After having the nexus 6, it's a feature I've stopped noticing. However, if I lost it it would be VERY apparent. I'm glad they kept it going.
I ordered the 5x thinking it had front facing stereo speakers.

LG V20 Speaker Comparison

So I've had my (T-Mobile variant) V20 for a little over a day now and I can already tell it will be an easy 2-year phone. I came from a (T-mobile) G5.
Since I haven't sold my G5 yet, I decided to do a head-to-head comparison. The V20 won in every aspect except for 1 area. It lagged behind my G5's speaker.
I was shocked honestly because I just assumed LG would use the exact same speaker for the V20 as they had in the G5, or a better one.
My findings were that the G5's speaker is quite loud, open, and has a fair amount of depth and bass for a single bottom-firing speaker.
The V20 on the other hand is a tad quieter, slightly muffled (when compared to the G5), and doesn't have as much depth/music layer separation.
So if anyone else has these 2 phones and wants to confirm for me that I have a properly working V20 speaker, please compare them.
Thanks!
My V20 (H918TN) has a significantly better bottom-firing speaker than my LG G5. Both are running stock sound profiles.

HA! just let me say something that i know you wont believe but anyway i wil say it. I can put music in my LG V20, leave it inside the room with the volume to the maximum, go outside the room, the room with door closed, walk away 17 long step and i can still hear some of the music yet. I had the Galaxy s5 and i couldnt achieve that, The device that get closer to such power of the V20 is the LG G3 ( from the devices currently own of course, and the ones i have owned too). I even went to the bathroom and could still hear it LOL the bathroom is 12 long steps away and it is an extra door added

probably a bad unit. I have listened to spotify and pandora music since 2011, and none of the devices i have tried have sounded like this
I have to say mine, which is also the T-Mobile variant is also on the more quiet side. I have to keep it about 75% in order to listen using YouTube for example.
Well I decided to hop on over to my local T-Mobile and compare the speaker on the floor model V20 with mine and they sound the same, volume and all. So I guess it's not defective? Maybe I'll just wait for root and boost the speaker volume
I can't help you - but wanted to say coming from a long run with samsung phones, note 3, 4 and 7 - the speaker in this V20 is very adequate. And the sound through the headphone jack - AMAZING. I will never settle for a crappy sounding phone again. Samsung should be listening.
I have the same problem. When i received a call until i just swap cards from G5 i thought that volume is completely down or it's just bugged ringtone. After that i realized that sound is unbelievable terrible quality and very quiet. Comparing to G5 which had amazing sound quality, coming to this ****ty quality i am just not sure that i want to keep the phone. I become pissed off with ****ty quality every time i receive a call.
Compared to my old nexus 6p
Speaker sound with v20 is bad. Really bad
Same experience comparing my V20 to my G3.
G3 sounds more cleaner. I think it has to do with the way the speaker is not flushed to the body of the phone resulting a not so rich sound. It definitely has the power though. Just a bad design.
I just got mine 3 days ago and my speacker is loud better than my note 3

Nexus 6P has dual front facing speakers. Of course it's not going to compare.
Coming from many years with Samsung Note 3, 4 & 7 - the speaker on the V20 is very impressive as long as your not blocking it with your hand or finger.
I'll never buy another Samsung phone unless they do something with the horrible sound. Even with a good set of headphones plugged in the Samsungs sound like crap compared to any HTC phone or the V20.

Audio Recording Quality (w/ samples!)

I think this is the right place for this, if not please move or let me know where I should go
I run an open jam, and last night got to test my V20 for the first time. I was recording from right up front, probably between 10 and 15 feet from the drums and amps. I should have been more scientific, I have an SPL meter but didn't think to check it (I also dropped the phone in front of people a few times to show off its toughness, because beer), but it's definitely pretty loud up there - from the back of the room I've seen 100-110dB, iirc. I also have a Zoom H4n which I should have A/B'd with, so I'll probably do that next week. So, without further ado, here's three short clips:
lgv20_recordings.zip
It does sound pretty good! I record on the Zoom a lot and I'm pretty familiar with how it sounds, even though I didn't actually record last night. The bass response is legitimately surprising. The only real problem I hear i the cymbal hits on the loud recordings - the limiter keeps them from clipping, but man, do they get smashed. Which is of course what a limiter does, but I thought this thing is supposed to "record up to 132dB". The peak lights were definitely solid red when I shut the limiter off, and red a lot of the time with it on. I thought it I thought they meant that the phone could handle up to 132dB without clipping. Am I misunderstanding what they mean? Do they just mean the mics themselves or something?
Would love to hear anyone's thoughts and any tips or ideas you might have to get better recordings out of this thing. Just to be clear, I'm in no way disappointed or feeling gypped or anything, under the right circumstances this phone's giving a ~$200 dedicated audio recorder a run for its money! I just want to see what this thing can really do.
You're way ahead of me. I'm still trying to figure out the audio part. Visual stuff I've got a handle on but the sliders leave me scratching my head. Look forward to see what all you come up with. As for the decibels part, I think I remember people pushing that it is the mics but I have no idea how credible those people are. (Tech bloggers.)
made some guitar videos. just some quick improv jams. sounds so good.

Thanks for the reply! Here's a quick rundown on the faders:
GAIN: This will boost or cut the input signal. I had this set all the way down for these, which is a -20dB "pad". Haven't tested how effective this is yet. Downside to something like this is that it'll affect all the sound in a recording, so if you're trying to record a quiet sound at a bar or something by turning up the gain, you'll be turning up all the noises in the bar.
LCF: Low Cut Filter, which is more properly called a high-pass filter - guess the devs/designers weren't audio people lol. This sets the cutoff. The way these actually work is there'll be a pretty steep roll-off below the set frequency, not sure exactly by how much on this or if it's shelving or a real filter curve, but I'll definitely be playing with it to find out. These get used a lot on guitars and vocals, because you know the instrument isn't going to put out anything that low, so any freq that low is the mic picking up something else around it. For reference, I think I've seen my macbook speakers go down to about 150hz (might've been 170 though), which is the top level on the recording software. Low freqs also have a lot of energy and it's easier to damage speakers by pumping them too much if the speaker can't handle it (we've all blown car speakers, right?) so I could see in some situations using this to save a future listener from themselves, but I'd never record like that - you can always take stuff out later, but you can't put anything back.
LMT: Limiter. Basically, this takes any sound louder than a certain level and turns it down to whatever level it's set at. There's also a less extreme version of this called compression, which you might see on a home theater or TV. The downside to both is with extreme gain reduction the signal will start to sound unnatural and "squashed" - you can hear it really clearly in the loud recordings I posted.
Hope that helps, and glad to answer any audio questions if I can!

Dude that's awesome! I play bass too and was actually thinking of getting a G&L soon. I see you're in central NJ, my open jam's actually at a bar called Blvd Bar and Grill in Elmwood Park, Bergen County, every Wednesday from 9-close. Come by some time!
nice! you should look at an L2000. they're great. mine is an '87 L2000 Leo fender signature model. it plays great for being 30 years old, just needs a new jack!

Headphone Adapter Quality?

How is the headphone adapter that comes with the 6T? As much as I don't want to purchase the 6T because of the lack of headphone jack, it doesn't really make sense to get the 6 because there's no price reduction.
You should check around, the 6 is going for $439..

I don't want to buy from those sites though. There's no warranty according to OnePlus. My 5T has some hardware issues with the GPS, charging port, and modem and it isn't a cheap fix.
Sound is average, If you really care about Audio Quality their is better devices out there.

What about this delay and battery life talk? Does that mean if I'm watching a video, the sound is delayed so it's out of sync?

I dont get a delay watching videos. I tried using bluetooth headphones and that was awful, PUBG was unplayable as there was a nearly second delay between action and sound with those, but the wired are fine thru the dongle. WHat I would say is that volume seems to be a little lower than I was expecting, but I've read that some dongles are better than others for that, e.g. the previous version of the pixel included dongle
And battery life is stellar, I'm a heavy user with 2 sims, and Im comfortably getting 2 days use out of a charge. Im really impressed with the phone so far after a week of use
Using UE900 IEMs, i have no issues with the audio quality. Can't really hear much of a difference between this and a Galaxy S7 Edge (wasn't the best audio output ever, so...). Source was Downloaded Spotify Premium content in highest quality.
Oneplus 6t can go louder however.
Before the S7 Edge i had an HTC One M8, with a fairly decent audio output (and low output impedance), i think it was slightly better, but yea. After a while, you simply get used to it, and don't hear anything wrong.
I have no issues. But i'm not someone who sits there in cramps trying to analyze every single Tone in existence just searching for any little Mistake. I put headphones on, and walk whereever i need to go, if i'm going anywhere without Car. Simply enjoy some music while on the go. Nothing more, nothing less. Anything else (in my opinion, when "on the go" at least) would've nothing to do with enjoying music anymore, if you focus your whole brain into analysing the audio quality everytime you listen to something. For comparisons early yea, but after that, it would not make much sense.
If you're the first kind, you might probably be happier with an LG Phone with their Quad DACs. Otherwise, especially if you use some cheaper headphones / IEMs, the only bad thing worth mentioning will be the "adapter-handling".
Audioquality however, is just fine. Not the best you could get. But good enough so there is no noise or whatever.
