New N935F 8.0 Update - Best Way to Install w/o Getting Lock - Samsung Galaxy Note FE Questions & Answers

Hi All,
What is the best way to install the new N935F update without having to wait another 7 days?
(Update: N935FXXU2BRF1_N935FOLB2BRF1_THL.zip)
Already on 8.0...this is a new security patch update.
Note: I am rooted and using TWRP

How is Root working for you and how did you do it? What are the drawbacks (what doesn't work)?

Root is working okay. No problems.
Here are the steps I followed:
1. turn off device
2. home+Vol. Down+Power -- get into download mode
3. start Odin 3.12
4. untick Auto-reboot
5. Install Twrp
6. After install => press Home+Vol/ Down+Power
7. At black screen => Home+Vol. Up+Power
8. In Twrp => Wipe -> Format Data -> Yes
9. Reboot into Recovery
10. Install Magisk
11. Wipe Cache & Dalvik
12. Install RMM pkg
13. Wipe Cache & Dalvik
14. Reboot System
15. After setup, check build.prop => ro.security.vaultkeeper.feature=1" change the value to 0.
16. Reboot device
17. Disable SecurityLogAgent pop-up
18. Download "CSC Features Expert for Samsung" on the Play Store (Free)
Launch the app and give it the root rights
In the search bar, type "DisableAntiMalware" (Without commas)
Click on the item and enter the value "TRUE" (Same)
Click on "Save"
Reboot
19. Fix Samsung Health
Download MiXplorer v6.22.1 HERE (Or any file manager of your choice if you're more familiar with it. I recommend MiXplorer because I use it everyday, it's lightweight, really nice to use, free and it's made by a great guy on XDA )
Access root partition and go into the "/system" folder
Open the file "build.prop" with a text editor.
Simply change the line "ro.config.tima=1" to "ro.config.tima=0"
Save the changes, and close the app.
Reboot.

Thanks for taking the time for that!
So everything works fine except for the security stuff?
As for the new update, I installed it through OTA and I can't figure out what it changed. I'm guessing you can't do OTA anymore once you root? If so, are you concerned it could be an issue in the future?

Did you get the update installed successfully? What changed? Is it stable? My current firmware with the April 1 security patch is giving me great battery life and is quite stable so I'm hesitant to upgrade right now...

I have not upgraded yet. I do not want the RMM lock back (7-day wait). I suppose I can create a TWRP install with the lock app removed and the build.prop edited. I will look into it today.

Are you also rooted?
I installed the update OTA, and I really don't know what changed even though it was over 200mb.
It is still Oreo 8.0, Samsung Exp. 9.0 and And. Sec. April 1. It does seem that the kernel and Samsung Security were updated.
Probably no connection, but right after the update an update to Good Lock became available.

No, I didn't root. Device was great how it was and I didnt have a need to yet so I left it. When did you do the update? Can you comment on device stability and battery life after the update?

Updated day and a half ago. I really don't see any difference in performance or features. I only have the phone for less than 3 weeks so maybe I haven't gotten to know it well enough to be able to tell.
Which Carrier are you using it on?

Currently using it abroad.

I know this isn't the original topic, but there doesn't seem much feedback on this phone - and there's some activity on this thread ?
The one thing bothering me about the phone (otherwise I absolutely love it) is data drops to "H" during phone call, so I just tested (on T mobile) over 100mb/s download speed goes to .3 during phone call - any fix?

Best way to flash new firmware and not get stuck waiting 7 days is to make sure odin doesn't auto reboot after the flash. Once it done flashing disconnect the phone and go back into download mode (do not reboot) and flash the twrp and root that you are using. Boot into recovery and wipe cache then reboot.

If you are rooted, the update will fail to install.
You can go through the process, get the triangle with the ! on it... hold power and hit Vol + to reboot... then copy the update's ZIP file from /cache to your SD card, reboot into clockwork, select "install zip from SD" to install it and reboot..
You'll loose root, so reboot back into clock work and install the exploit.zip from the universal root thread
I got the update this morning. Installed in about 3 minutes. Location is South West Michigan.
Followed KidJoe's directions, but I found nothing in the cache folder /cache. Is the update located somewhere else?

You have to have superuser permission to see the file. I do the copy operation from terminal. Just got done doing this, worked like a charm and I rerooted and reinstalled the Rogue Rana kernel at the same time.
Just got my update as well.

I tried this but it didn't work.
The file that was in the cache folder was named "28dbe910f0b5.signed-trygon-HLK75F-from-HLK75D.28dbe910.zip". I copied it to my external sdcard and tried to flash it and it got an error and aborted.

With mine, I needed to reflash my kernel after flashing the update as well as the root package. Without reflashing the kernel, I was soft-bricked at the red "M" logo.
Me too.. You need your system partition to have the stock apks for this to work. I had to replace my custom framework with the stock framework as well. It patches a boatload of files. It will leave SU alone. But you *will* lose root and CWM recovery - so be prepared to fastboot your recovery back. Then reapply Universal Root.
I had Rogue 143 kernel installed. On reboot - WiFi didn't work (not surprising - as Rogue probably had its own drivers left behind). I reapplied Rogue - and all better again.
Best I can tell - Settings > Wireless/Networks > Mobile Networks > "Verizon Data Service"... If pressed, brings a web page for service setup. This may be new - I don't recall checking it under HLK75D.
Other than that - the update appears benign. There was one curious update file - lte_bp_gota.img @ 24MB. This kinda looks like ROM for the radio card and maybe kernel - but what do I know? It does not appear to be a new bootloader - but @ 24MB - could be all those things.
Is there any way to not run the update and stop the notification from popping up?
To prevent the OTA, put FOTAKill.apk in your system apps.

[GUIDE] How to manually update AT&T stock to OTA I747UCLG1 | **Wipes Data**

Here's a quick and dirty guide on if you, like me, were having trouble getting the software update from the Settings -> About -> Software Update menu. I've just done this myself and it worked perfectly EXCEPT it will wipe your data so essentially a factory reset. I wasn't expecting this to occur and I didn't see any option to NOT do a data wipe so I'm assuming when running it as a manual update the script just does a data wipe.
*** STOP READING THIS UNLESS YOU ARE AWARE A FACTORY RESET WILL OCCUR***
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Although it is quite annoying, thanks to the magic of Google Restore at least most of your settings and apps should come down automatically and you will end on the latest AT&T OS as well as the latest modem which people are reporting is providing better performance.
ROOT: If you are rooted as I was, although Superuser will remain after this it doesn't appear to work so you will need to re-root
This guide requires an external SD card
Step 1: Download the following file:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/44732317/2400258.cfg.zip
Step 2: Extract the zip file and you should end up with 2400258.cfg
Step 3: Rename the extension so it now is called 2400258.zip
Step 4: Using File Manager or Astro copy the 2400258.zip to the root of your external SD Card (/extSDcard)
Step 5: Do whatever backup you want (your extSDcard will be safe but internal storage including sdcard will be wiped)
Step 6: When ready, power off your phone
Step 7: Hold down volume up, home button and while keeping those pressed down press the power button
Step 8. Phone will power up and you can release buttons
Step 9: It will boot into stock Samsung recovery
Step 10: Use volume key to select "Update from external storage" (I believe 2nd on list) and hit power.
Step 11: Use volume key to highlight the 2400258.zip you just put there and hit power
Step 12: Let it do it's things...
Step 13. Weep as you see "wiping /data"
Step 14. After done reboot phone. You now have a factory fresh Samsung GS3 on AT&T with latest OS/FW.
Step 15. Spend the next 5 hours resetting up your phone instead of doing work

CWM-flashable version without wipe
I put together a CWM-flashable version of the OTA that doesn't wipe /data, preserves root, and doesn't update Google Search to remove universal wipe.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768826
This will come in handy in combination with the Stock Odin files if you want to revert to a completely fresh, stock UCLG1 package when selling or swapping the phone.

The only problem is that there's a whole thread of people who are saying they lost their IMEI by flashing CWM and not even flashing a Rom so that has me concerned. The only option when that happens is to return thru phone and exchange it.

It's the thought that counts. by the way I think the reason the data is wiped is for security so someone can't steal a phone and flash something to get access to your data.
EDIT: FWIW, I checked the updater script in the OTA and it does not wipe data. So the wiping of data is as I suspected default behavior for stock recovery when you are manually using it for security purposes. Just good to know.

GUIDE: How to Install Marshmallow on G925I coming from Lollipop ROM

I have seen many people on the ROM forums saying that you can't install Marshmallow ROMs on a G925I, or asking how to install.
Well I can say that yes it is possible and yes it is really straight forward and easy to do.
So I have decided to do it myself (prior to this I was also on Lollipop ROM) and took down the steps (literally step by step) to help others.
Please note: This will trip Knox.
What you need first:
1. Official Stock Marshmallow ROM for G925I
Download from here
2. Odin (I used 3.10.7)
3. Arter97's TWRP 3.0 recovery fro G925FI
Download from here
4. A custom ROM (I used Pure Stock ExtraLite Rom). Copy to your phone.
Steps:
1. Backup (EFS, nandroid, I also copied my files like photos, documents, etc to my PC)
2. Turn off device
3. Power on device directly in recovery (volume up + home + power)
4. Plug USB cable to PC and device
5. Go to Mount and enable MTP
6. Delete folders you don't need (I only kept DCIM, Bluetooth, downloads, documents, etc)
6.1 In DCIM, delete .thumbnails. I also deleted all the other folders with a . in front of them
7. Disable MTP and pull the USB cable from your device
8. Go to Home and click on Wipe
9. Swipe to factory reset
10. Click back and then advanced wipe
11. Select dalvik cache, cache, data and system (no need to wipe internal)
12. Swipe to wipe
13. Turn off device
14. Power on device directly in download mode (volume down + home + power)
15. Press volume up to continue in download mode
16. Start ODIN in administrator
17. Connect USB cable and make sure your device is recognised by ODIN
18. Click on AP and select G925I Marshmallow Stock ROM
19. Click start (it will take some time to flash)
20. Once finished, let it boot into new Marshmallow Stock ROM
21. You can unplug the USB once it is booting
22. Once booted, quickly setup your phone (probably dont need to but i wanted to see it first)
23. Once booted, turn off device completely
24. Power on device directly in download mode (volume down + home + power)
25. Press volume up to continue in downlod mode
26. This time uncheck auto reboot
27. Connect USB cable and make sure your device is recognised by ODIN
28. Click on AP and select Arter97's TWRP 3.0 (.tar.md5)
29. Click start
30. Once finished, unplug the USB cable from device
31. Press volume down + home + power until phone turns off (screen black). Release the keys and immediately press volume up + home + power to boot phone into recovery
32. Agree to TWRP's modification of the system message (swipe to allow)
33. Plug USB cable in device and click on mount
34. Once again delete files you don't need (folders with a . in front of them)
35. Disable MTP and unplug USB cable from device
36. Go to Home and click on Wipe
37. Swipe to factory reset
38. Click back and then advanced wipe
39. Select dalvik cache, cache, data and system (no need to wipe internal)
40. Swipe to wipe
41. Go to Home and select Install
42. Select ROM and swipe to flash
43. Reboot once installation is complete
44. Enjoy!

Flashing anything not signed by Samsung like a custom recovery, kernel or ROM will trip Knox. Rooting also trips Knox.

Awesome tutorial, very easy to follow indeed.
I however, instead of downloading a custom ROM fom XDA decided to download the stock Nepal 6.0.1 from sammobile. Since installing that ROM I have noticed very very poor battery life. Almost losing 5% of battery every 30 minutes SoT, this compared to losing 1% per 30 mins of SoT back on stock 5.1.1 Australia XDA.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on this at all? Maybe a fix? Do you know of a better custom MM ROM with better battery life?
Thanks

Well that's what I did. I downloaded the stock MM ROM from sammobile in order to get MM boot loader and modem. And then was able to use a custom ROM.
Not wanting to be rude but are you sure you have your stats right? 1% of battery loss per 30 minutes of SOT is impossible.. that means you'll be getting 5 hours SOT per 10% battery loss..
Right now I'm sitting on 90% battery life with a SOT of 30 minutes with hotspot on, browsing the internet, XDA and facebook.. battery life should get better but in the past few days I've been getting over 4 hours SOT per cycle. Which is roughly what I got on LP.

I'll admit the 1% per 30 mins SoT was a tiny exaggeration/estimate, but not far off.
I noticed the poor battery this morning when I woke up. I took my phone off charge (100% at the time, after an ~8 hour charge), I muted some alarms and put my phone back down, roughly 30 minutes later I got out of bed, checked my phone and noticed it was down to 96% without even using it.
As I've used it more and more through the day (as my charge gets lower) I am noticing an improvement in battery discharge so I guess I'll just let it go flat and give it a fresh charge and go from there.
I may just be focusing on the battery percentage more now because, new firmware/features ect.. But I still feel like I am losing 3-4% more now then I was on Lollipop.
But just to clarify, using the Nepal ROM on an Australian phone wouldn't be draining battery would it? I can't really think why it would, but worth asking.

I believe this is because sometimes your phone may want to boot straight into the firmware after flashing certain things. Such as with installing TWRP, TWRP needs to finish installing by booting into recovery after flashing, and not into the firmware.
Pardon me if this isn't correct.

Only reason I ask is I tried it both ways of letting it reboot and not (by Editting the Odin.ini file) and their was no difference other than I had to manually reboot when auto reboot was off (which was annoying!)

Did you try rebooting into recovery after instead of booting into the firmware? Also you can uncheck auto reboot within Odin, you don't need to edit the .ini file.

Hmm.. Can't remember.
Installed 4 or 5 times from scratch.
Doesn't matter now. Tested after that I could restore and all good.
Version of Odin I used has no options for auto reboot in the UI. [emoji106]

One question: can I get to install the marshmallow stock rom only following the instructions 14 to 20? I am not interested to wipe data (I haven´t done it the previous times I have done it in other mobiles) and I don't want to install a custom rom
I'm feeling curious, in this case you don't need to install it rooting the device in first place?
Thank you!

If all you're doing is flashing the stock MM ROM then yes, you should be fine doing steps 14-20. Generally, when flashing stock ROMs you wont lose any of your data (images, media, documents..) also there is no need to wipe your phones data, but I would still recommend making a backup just in case something does go wrong.

If all you're doing is flashing the stock MM ROM then yes, you should be fine doing steps 14-20. How I got 12h+ SOT on my 5T

Alright, so now that a hand full people asked me how I got over 12h of sceen on time, I'm writing this post.
First of all, SOT depends on your usage, so the result might be different for you.
Anyway, here is what I did:
!!! You need a unlocked bootloader !!!
1. Clear all phone data.
(I used stock Recovery to wipe internal storage, since TWRP is bugging in wiping the internal storage and my PC didn't recognize my device's storage)
2. Flash TWRP (I used the blu_spark version)
3. Install the latest stable OOS (4.7.6 for me) in TWRP from here
( https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...ficial-oxygen-os-roms-and-ota-updates.686610/ )
4. Once the device booted, do not start to set it up. (Stay at the Welcome screen!!)
5. Power off your device.
6. Reboot in fastboot mode, flash TWRP again and reboot directly into recovery mode.
7. Once in TWRP, connect your device to your PC and drag the latest Magisk.zip and NewKernel.zip to your devices root directory (I used NewKernel v1.08 and Magisk 15.2, NewKernel can be found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/newkernel-t3710363/page43 )
8. Flash Magisk first, after that (without rebooting) NewKernel.
9. Then wipe cache, dalvik and reboot.
10. After set up and you installed the Apps you need, charge your phone to 100%)
11. Install Greenfiy. (Just go for the version found in the Playstore) If you don't like Greenify, I know what your thinking, but trust me.
11. Greenify the apps that are draining your battery. (I attached a screenshot of my greenified apps)
12. Boom, enjoy your new battery life!
(If you have any problems with internal storage, (which shouldn't happen) fix contents in TWRP)
~Use NewKernel v1.08 because 1.09 has wifi issues.~
Note: This guide is for Android 7.1.1 OOS 4.7.6

That's with Stock + Greenify before coming across your guide.
Had issues with third party Kernels on other devices in the past so I stay away from them now.
If the kernel recommended supports Oreo then I may give it a shot.
lol im so confused. i flashed stock boot.img then new kernel 1.08 then magisk 15.0 and my wifi didnt work.
so i restore a backup of my working boot.img and tried your way.
Downloaded stock boot.img flashed it, then flashed magisk 15.2 then new kernel 1.08. (im like wtf how will i keep root but it did. coz i though magisk "lives" in the boot.img)
but it worked. wifi works with safetynet intact

I think the problem was with Magisk 15.0. I also had trouble with this version, but no wifi issues. My phone took almost 3 min to boot. This was fixed in 15.1 and 15.2 was more optimized.
I'm glad it worked

Some browsing, watched a movie (that I downloaded earlier), read things on xda, some social media
For that you dropping a donation link? C'mon bro. You only using your screen. No apps, no games nothing. Just Chrome was used. Everyone can get this good SOT with that app-usage. Actually its better to hold the apps in ram than force close it
Everyone wants money for minimum work....
I use Greenify Magisk Version.
Naptime and Servicely, Naptime Doze is advanced than Greenify Doze. all pro versions
Hibernate the crappy system apps and you're good to go.
I get around 8h SOT with heavy usage.
currently on OB1.

Where's the Recents button?
When will update start in Korea?
I just got this phone and I like it a lot but I am wondering does it get regular updates? Regular security patches? Thanks

Thanks a bunch. I want to update it, but I am at work and have a PCI compliant laptop. I don't think I could transfer my TiBU files to my computer, or even run fastboot if I wanted to lol
Anyone else having issues with the single home button gestures not working fully?
It is on by default, and if you long swipe up or swipe up when recent apps are showing, you don't not get the app drawer. The whole point of this gesture is accessing your app drawer from anywhere...

Do I understand correctly that there is no need to lock the bootloader before performing the factory update (since it is not mentioned in your instructions)?

Don't know if you want to trust me, but yes. I updated mine to Android Pie using the OTA with an unlocked bootloader and did not re-lock it before I updated... worked fine.

Gone, by default, due to Pie's multi-gesture button. I've tried it out, and am really not a fan of the gesture control.
To disable it, and get the Overview button back:
1. Go into system settings, then go to System all the way at the bottom
2. Select Gestures
3. Select "Swipe up on Home button" and disable it
You'll get back the classic three-button layout. The icons are now filled in, instead of just outlines.
Overview and enabling multi-window is so much worse than it was in Oreo and earlier... And moving the clock to the left corner was stupid (unless you have a phone with a screen notch, I guess). Stop copying Apple, Google...

No need to lock your bootloader for OTA. Just follow the posted instructions and you will be fine. I can confirm that the method works.
