WARNING!!! Samsung Galaxy S9+/S9 Clear View case scratches screens. - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Accessories

Good day to all S9+ (and S9 for that matter) owners.
3 years ago i posted on this forum about how the Samsung S6 Clear view case causes the screen to scratch very easily. Link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...s/samsung-view-case-scratched-screen-t3107467
I have now purchased a Samsung S9+ with the latest Clear View case and guess what? Same thing. After 1 day of fitting it, my screen is scratched. Luckily, based on my previous experience with this type of case, i was more aware of potential damage to the screen and kept on monitoring it until the first scratch and tiny hole appeared on my screen. I really had high hopes that Samsung learned from their mistake and manufactured a better case with different materials, which by the looks of it, it does look like it was made using different materials, however, Samsung failed to really put these cases through normal usage tests before releasing them to the public.
Anyone else noticed this?

Using it for last couple of months and find no issue whtsoever .. No scratches or anything ..

All it takes is one piece of something abrasive to get stuck between the cover and the screen to scratch it.. I'd use a screen protector with a case like that.
My friend put one on his S8+, screen is scratched too, I'd guess something got in there while it was in his pocket.

My friend has the same issue with his clear view case... He's now using a 3rd party case instead.

That's good to know!

Thanks for the info. Samsung cases are just to pricey.

I bought my note9 together with Samsung clear view case and screen protector. Screen protector applied right after phone unboxing. So, even a clear view case is used, it is good to put as well a screen ptotector.

My first Samsung was Galaxy 7. I got a very good in-store rebate of $250, for a 2 yr old G3! I always keep my stuff for the most part, pristine. I take pride in that. Got a bluetooth speaker, screen protector, and then a cheaper incipio case. I have to say that the incipio is a very durable brand. I have an s9 plus now and still bought one of those. I have dropped my phone a few times where i thought it was going to be cracked, but it came through every time. It is open faced, but i used cellhelmet w/gorilla glass 6, and not one scratch. I also purchased a belt case. Really decent case as well. I could never see getting those bulky cases. If you don't know about the incipio, it comes in 2 pieces. A rubber inner shell, and a rubber coated ceramic outer shell. Sounds like it would be fragile? When snugs around the phone it reinforces the outer. ??

Protection concerns

Hi all
It's been a while. Having spent years holding onto Windows Mobile, I finally transitioned to Android with an HD2 .. a device I still love.
Work had me using supplied iPhones for the last few years. I can see the attraction buy the iOS restrictions always frustrated. Having invested in what I'm pained to agree is the best app ecosystem, latterly with family iPADs it became clear for tablets at least, I was stuck. For the phone .. work have just ordered me an iPhone6.
I had a hankering for a new Android phone for a long time but they never seemed quite right. The Note (aside from the lack of 64bit for the upcoming 'L') seemed closer than ever. Out on a trip to get my son's iPhone 5 repaired I had one of those moments. The Air 2 cellular arrived at the store that morning so I bought one to replace my iPAD3. Until I heard it finally had got the min 2gb it needed and then the extra core .. in wasn't going to bother.
I then trotted down the road and found stores that had just got the Note4 in that morning. I picked one up at carphone on EE.
It's stunning .. at last .. a Samsung with the build of the HD2 ☺.
So .. why all the rambling ?
Well .. I at last have the personal phone in want and I can't use it.
I hear on this forum that many had issues with cases causing blemishes on the Note3 screen .. particularly the s-view. I also hear that screen protectors don't really work well on the curved edge screen. I can't take something this big and lovely out without protection.
Has anyone had this blemish issue yet with the Note4 ? Has anyone found a protector that looks good and works well ? I've always used Writeshield and Media Devil before .. they've looked good after two years and don't require sticky back on liquid to put on. I'm wary of others but open to advice.
Re the case .. I don't want to scratch the metal sides. I'm slightly interested in the Samsung protector case but would normally get a Noreve, Piel Frama or Krussell leather book style. The latter 3 are due out shortly but that may mean 4 weeks.
What to do ? If the screen inc coating were as hardy as the iPhone I'd just have the book case and not worry about the screen protector but if that's not the case I'd need both.
Any advice .. much appreciated.
Paul

Just dont throw it in a bag with your keys, screwdrivers and diamonds and you should be fine. I never use a screen protector, and all my screens are fine. Just dont place it screen down on tables etc, dont keep it in a pocket with keys etc, and dont drop it. Oh, and perhaps consider getting an insurance for the phone, just in case you DO fall down the stairs and it breaks.
The screen can withstand quite a bit, easily equal to the iphones screen. I have no idea why you think the iphone screen is somehow less prone to damage.
As an ex HD2 user I hear what your saying. I have a cheep flip case until my otter box defender arives. I have been using them since my HD2. You can't get a better case if you don't mind the added bulk.
My concerns about the screen are not first hand. They come from several threads for the Note 3 where the s-view case apparently left scratch like blemishes in the coating on the screen (not the screen itself). I don't if this has been confirmed with the Note 4.
Thanks for the thoughts re Otterbox. . I'll have a look at them.
Has anyone any thoughts re screen protectors that work and leather book like cases ?

too easy to scratch the frame! fraying???

i got my new note 4 a week ago. i really take care of my precious new toy but i was not able to buy a case (the shops has only 1 type) so i kept in my pocket then noticed small scratches all along the polished metal frame. wtf?! okay i know its aluminium but i expected much more durability. you would think metal > plastic. well it isnt here! is there any way to polish it up again? its too bad yet and i bought a case finally but that abrasion happened to be there in LESS THAN A WEEK!!! otherwise i love it
Lol
I always thing these phones today are to easy to get scratch.?

And as I've read in another thread this case will scratch it when u put on and take it off
My month old note 4 has always been nude and i dont have a single scratch. I also put it in my pocket but with nothing else. I have white model. Not sure if the black model scratches easily or of the scratches show more...

My White Note 4 is almost a month old too, i take meticulous care with it and too have found that i have scratches along the top Metallic edges - nowhere else. I ALWAYS use the same pocket and NEVER have enything else in it. It seems the material inside pockets is enough to scratch this metal I'm 100% sure this has not been in contact with anything else.
As for getting rid of them, i've considered using the Buffer on a Nail File / polisher. You know the types of thing that have like 4 different edges - a rough stage to file the nail, then gradually upto the 4th side which polishes the nail.
Like this :- http://makeupandbeauty.com/basicare-4-way-nail-buffer-block-review/
I was thinking of trying this with the polishing side only to see if it'll buff out the blemishes. I also have The Samsung S-View Case on its way so hopefully won't get any worse..
Very dissapointing to say how much these things cost - a little more durability would certainly have been appreciated!
you would think metal > plastic.

No, of course not. Why would you think that? Plastic is clearly the more durable material out of polycarbonate and aluminum with regard to scratches.
People scream for durability, but at the same time for metal phones. You sort of have to pick one.
Mine is scratched up too....only small scratches along the same polished, metal frame. I've had a case on it since after the first week of owning the phone and yes, it is the cheap Spigen one

Is a protective case and screen protector necessary?

So I've recently ordered a S7 Edge and am wondering about buying a protective case and screen protector.
I dislike doing so: the phone is beautiful in and of itself and this costs money.
In addition, a case adds thickness and weight and screen protectors are often vulnerable to fingerprints, smudges and trapped air.
I've seen this video: http://gizmodo.com/how-durable-is-the-galaxy-s7-edge-1762853239
and it appears that the S7 Edge is fairly resilient.
So how necessary are these protective accessories? I carry the phone in the front pocket of my pants, sometimes with keys.
If I should really get them, any you can recommend? I would prefer them to be so light, transparant and unnoticeable as possible. Though if they add handy features, might reconsider.
The way I rationalize it is that a case is cheaper than insurance and with a phone this expensive, I need at least one of those options. I got the casemate naked tough case and it seems like it doesn't add any noticeable bulk.

It is an $800 phone, I would not recommend carrying it with anything else in your pocket.
The keys will scratch it eventually, they also add a pressure point to press into the glass and break it.
The keys will scratch the aluminum edges of the phone even if they do not scratch the glass.
If you get a protector or not is up to you, however don't create chances to ruin the new phone if you can help it.
I will be using a screen protector 100% of the time, I will be using a case when I am at work at least.
If nothing else they will help to keep the resale value of the phone high.
I always keep my phones about 6 months and resell them while they are still worth a decent amount.
It really depends on the person. If you intend on selling the phone in 6 months, protect it like a baby. If you intended on keeping it forever then go all out. Have fun.

I got my note 3 since April 2014, bought a tempered glass protector once and removed it after a week because I couldn't get used to the lower quality feeling, the glass provided by Samsung is so smooth and pleasant to the touch, I miss it very much when using my iPad Air 2. I can make photos for those interested, I don't have a single scratch on my screen, not even a tiny one, in almost 2 years. I did use a case tho, one that saved my phone more then once and I highly recommend using a case because you will eventually drop the phone. You say you take good care of it but it's inevitable, it's an object that you use every day very frequently, trust me you WILL DROP IT.
I personally used a UAG case which is not slim by any means, but not only they offer absolutely great protection, I think they look badass too. Their transparent cases look sick, you can search on YouTube for transparent UAG case for s6, it will look the same and it looks awesome.
As for the screen protector, it's up to you. I personally won't use one, and if you have a pocket that will only hold the phone and nothing else, you probably don't too. My note 3 has gorilla glass 3, I imagine the gorilla glass 4 on this phone should hold even better.
If you do get a case, just don't get the spigen ones. They might look flashy and nice, but trust me, I bought one for my note, my dad's note, and one for my girlfriend's s5, all different models, and they are absolute junk that get deteriorated very fast or broken.
Edit: here's a link for the UAG case on s6, in the beginning of the video you can see the edge version, it will look the same for the s7.

Is it necessary for you to wear a condom? No. Should you? Yes. Will it ever feel as good with one on? No.
You know how people say there's no such thing as a stupid question? Well... looks like you proved them wrong.
I will just have a slim clear case, so i can still see the beauty that is S7 Edge. A screen protector is not something i'll be using. In my poket its just my phone, so scratches wont be a problem. And i cant stand the plastic feel a protector brings...
I like going naked but not with the S7 Edge. Yikes! I always get a think clear case usually from Samsung just because that's what I like. It doesn't protect the phone that much though.
Well, since the back of this phone is glass, I'd say a case is pretty necessary. I got one for my GS7 Edge that's clear so I can still see the design of the phone (which is very important to me). Usually I don't like using phone cases, but again, with the back being glass and the phone being $800, I didn't want to risk it.
As for screen protectors, I refuse to use them. I hate how they make the screen feel and look (air bubbles, for example). I've never cracked a phone's screen ever, even though I drop phones a lot because I have butterfingers. I've dropped my HTC One M8 face-down on tile multiple times and it only has a little scratch on the screen that's only noticeable if you look for it.I don't think screen protectors are necessary.

Agree completely. Nothing else goes into the pocket my phone is in, other than maybe a paper receipt on rare occasions.

I got the Spigen Neo Hybrid Crystal case. I received it a couple days ago, and it seems durable without being bulky. However, I still don't have my S7 Edge yet, it should get here by Friday...so I don't know exactly how I feel about the case yet, but past generations of it got very good reviews, so I'm optimistic.

Thanks. I've been looking at that one, too. When you get the phone, would you mind posting your thoughts on how well the case works with it? I'm particularly interested in how comfortable (or not) it is to handle in the case vs. without, and how well you can see the back of the phone.

Want to buy have hesitations because of cracking , help !

I could swear i picked the right forum (Questions & Answers) , seems i didn't , someone delete this thread . i will repost !
Help me out here bro's .. for a whole week i have watched hundreds of reviews and drop tests etc , i like the S7 Edge but i am terrified of that glass screen on the front side cracking by itself without drops acording to many people on the web, i normally use cases on all my phones but with this model i'm afraid that its edge will be easy to crack if dropped in a certain position with a case , it is not a cheap phone and if i pay this much i want to be sure that is a bit tough and won't have to be in service centers a hundred times , what are your experiences with it , i am stressing between S7 Edge and the HTC 10 full metal body and its resistance Thanks.
I had same hesitations as you have even with a spigen tough armor case. I have broken a S6 edge plus in past and vowed not to buy a edge phone. Stayed long time with My Note4, the longest phone i have ever kept for 2 years.
S7 Edge is fragile. and if u are not careful yes you will break the screen if u have fumbling hands like me. I have bought a Otterbox Defender case for my s7 edge. it looks bigger, feels heavy, touch might not be as smooth as one without a case
The best reason for otterbox defender was built in screen protector, its not glass mind you but work fine. I dropped my phone from around 4ft height but not even a single scratch on the case or phone...
That is the only case i use most of the time , although i have 4 more like Spigen Tough Armor, and the Original flip cover, but im not a fan of flipcovers, not my taste. I also have Samsung Accidental Warranty replacment for screen 1 time if i break it
The warranty plus the otterbox for me was the only combo that makes me feel safe.
Many would disagree and say they think its best not to use screen protector and have the best of edge screen. But a little compromise makes me feel comfortable to throw around my phone on table , in car , on bed etc without worrying that i might break it.
So in the end other cases can give u Semi type protection. but be careful as if it falls on floor u will surely damage the phone... I have no regrets . amazing phone , killer camera and screen on time. i get around 6 to 7 hours screen on time mostly
Dropped my phone multiple times from different heights. Thank God UAG saves my phone.

So far not even a scratch on my s7 edge. Even after like 2-3 drops maybe. It is a really durable phone. Everything is nice and solid. Best phone I had so far. Even Note 4 had a unbreakable glass, as well as Galaxy S6. But S7 Edge has the best glass out of them all.
i have been using a Spigen Crystal Shell on my S7 edge since day 1. Brilliant protection. Haven't dropped the phone thankfully yet but the crystal shell has these air cushion bumps that are pronounced on all 4 corners.
i have mine in a vrsdesign case, got it from amazon for under £10, and with my job im constantly climbing in /out on top and under machines, and mines hasnt broke i think theyre more durable than people think, just look after it properly, too many people are careless with devices these days

It wasn't deleted. it was moved to the Q&A forum, where it should have been posted
http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/want-to-buy-hesitations-cracking-help-t3522197
I'll close it, and leave this one open. But I will also move this one to Q&A.
As for the screen glass, it doesn't crack on it's own. It never has, and never will.
If you worry about that, you may as well not buy any phone in case it smashes.
I've never had a screen protector or case on any of my flagship smartphones, for the last 10 years or so, and never had a smashed screen.
I've even dropped my S7E a few times onto concrete, and barely left a mark.
Mine broke on its own. but don't worry, its only $260 to replace it by samsuck and it will no longer be water resistant.
On it's own?
Sorry but I just can't see how that would ever happen with Gorilla Glass 4.
My S7 Edge Lens cover broke on its own. And the display cracked on the edge recently. Still working perfectly as the shattered pieces are held together by the ScreenGuard - Best ScreenGuard by GadgetzShield.
They don't break in their own unless you put pressure on the screens or your phone is faulty and overheating. Does mine a few times with a Spigen case and it's all good. Maybe there are imperfections in the glass as edge screens are not perfectly flat and hard to make. Each one is unique.
Sent from my SM-G935F using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yes. The Display edge cracked on fall. The camera lens cover is fragile.
It is doubtful that you need another person telling you that the phone is worthwhile, but I'm going to anyway
As mentioned previously, Gorilla Glass 4 is very durable. NO phone is meant to be dropped without consequence, save for maybe the "Active" series. That said, I just received my Spigen Neo Hybrid Crystal case, and I threw on a Skinomi tech skin (for cases, not full coverage).
I too watched a ton of videos, looked at a lot of case reviews, etc. Many of which showed shattered backs, cracks, etc. I'm extremely careful with my devices because I believe in only buying them once. I'm not careless enough to drop my phone from 20 feet, or something ridiculous like that. If you are a normal person, who takes care of their electronics, the demise of this phone need not be feared.
I have a s7 edge and my only concern is that at some point Samsung will decide that it will not update the software any more or bring software features which will come to the newer devices. The hardware is great. The update policy is bad and it makes you feel like you have an old device even if the hardware is perfectly fine.

Whitestone Dome Preorder

I've never bought Whitestone Dome before, because I just couldn't justify the price. Well, I recently bought a used Note 9 that already had one installed. And now I see why everyone raves about them.
I got to thinking, I usually spend more buying cheap screen protectors than I would if I just ponied up the money upfront for Dome. So I decided to preorder a Whitestone for my Note 10+.
Here's my question for those that have bought them in the past. If I only have one Note 10+, is there any reason to get the two-pack? Don't they come with a lifetime warranty anyway? I think I read warranty replacements are only $10, so would it make sense to spend $15 more for the two-pack? Or am I missing something?
I ask because when I pre-ordered, they only had the single in stock, and I got it for $41. Well now the two pack is in stock for $54. Would it be worth it to cancel my first order and get the two-pack?
Obviously title should say DOME not SOME. Stupid autocorrect cc

I had the Whitestone Dome on my Note 8, put it on day one of owning the phone. Two years later and it's still sitting pretty with no issues. I have dropped my phone a couple times, nothing major, but every time I approached my phone fearing the worst. The Dome is tough as nails, though. Crack-free since day 1.
I would say the 2 pack is unnecessary for most people, but if you are the kind to juggle your phone or plan to use it as an airsoft scope then sure, pick up the two piece.
They don't work that good with in screen fingerprint, alot of misses.

Unfortunately they do not ship to the country I am in. I guess I just have to wait for local distributor to bring it in.

I used them on my Note 9 since launch I'm on my second, first was my own fault put my keys in the wrong pocket and they chipped the edge of the glass then over time it cracked more and flaked away, second is fairly solid but shows signs of lifting on one side, but I work outside and do fairly physical work so they do take a fair bit, but they do way better than any other screen protector I've ever used, they seem to survive drops and hits way better and the screen response is way better.
also the only protector I've found for curved screens that doesn't let dust in behind it due to it being fully glued unlike most that seem to only glue the edges and in some cases it's not even all 4.
I'd wait to see how it works with the fingerprint reader first. The reviews of the S10 one are not great.
Yup, I ordered one but I am kind if surprised by the contrast between the positive recommendations I find in forums and a few poor reviews I read on Amazon, especially about the s10 version. Hope it means that forum users are more evolved users when it comes to installing screen protectors... Paid 60€ to find out, will come back here for a review.
My experience was awesome for almost 10 mos, but the past couple of mos I can see dried adhesive on the top where it looks like air bubbles underneath. No clue why or how that happened but im assuming that it just dried out after a while. That was my first time using it on my note 9, so I have kind of mixed emotions on getting one for the 10+. Depending on the quality of these other tempered glass protectors I bought, I may or may not get one but as far as durability goes, I have dropped my phone multiple times and only this last time which was on concrete did it even slightly crack. So I will give it 2 thumbs up for durability.

that's the problem I have with mine on the Note 9 at the moment, it started to appear after the phone took a bump, I believe it is just the glass lifted slightly in the bump.
on the people and the fingerprint scanner, seen a few reviews some people have said they had to try the install more than once to get the scanner to work properly so it may just be it needs to be installed well for the reader to pass through the glue and screen protector. but for me I'm more disappointed they took the Iris scan out, I've never had any luck with fingerprint readers in the past they always seem to struggle with my fingerprints. so I don't hold much hope on the scanner working well either way.
Are they case friendly? Or will it push off?

It really depends on the case. You'll have to wait for people to try it with various cases to find out.

I hope they've worked the kinks out now they've had a few months to play around with it. I've had one on my Note 9 since the day it arrived and it still looks brand new so I'd feel much better with one on my 10+ next week.
my protector came today ready for friday, they have changed/added a step to the install I'm guessing to deal with the fingerprint scanner, there is a lump of what looks like machined polycarbonate and a suckercup, it slots into the bottom end of the installation jig and is placed on the glas before it is lowered with a ridge facing the phone I'm guessing to add pressure to middle of the protector as it sets, the lump also has a circle on it that it tells you to line the glue up in before lowering the screen protector.
so it seems a bit more fiddly to install as you are aiming for a target rather than just running the glue back to the protector, but I'm guessing it is to help with the fingerprint scanner and looking at how it installs user error could be a large factor in why people are seeing problems as the tolerances seem quite small. also I don't know if the S10 kits had this same install method but I know the Note 9 didn't have the step with the weight.
There is simply not a better screen protector out there. I have had Samsung phones since the very beginning (worked for a wireless carrier for 13 years). I've had every type of screen protector you can buy. I used to stick with Zagg glass as they were the truest to touch and I had a zagg store to install and replace them for $10 a pop whenever I wanted.
Then I found the Whitestone. I travel a LOT, I'm HARD on phones (backpacking, lots of water, etc). I use my phone for EVERYTHING. Once I got the hang of install NOTHING has come close. Durable, perfect tactile feel, nearly flawless install every time. I use fingerprint all the time (Samsung pay) and didnt have issues on Note 9, Galasy S10+ and dont expect them on the Note 10+ either.
You may have a little drying at the top of the protector but only after lots of direct sun, water submersion, or other. Make sure you cure it really well and you won't have an issue.
There is not going to be a better protector as the light adhesive barrier between the screen and the glass makes touch sensitivity perfect PLUS it reinforces the protector.
PROTIP: Get the 2 pack. Whitestone requires a picture of the cracked or damage replacement for a swap (only $10). Buy 2 so you can replace with the new one while getting the second swapped out.

2-pack was sold out when i placed my order. Of course its in stock now, but I've already ordered. I'll just stick with the single pack and take my chances. $10 for a replacement seems reasonable enough.
If I decide i don't like the Whitestone Dome, I'll go back to Ringke Easy Film. Its easily the best soft screen protector on the market. I do love the Whitestone on my Note 9, I'm just not sure about how it will affect the FP reader. As others have said, it seems to be a mixed bag of reviews.

reading the install it sounds like you really need to be precise with fitting the protector, so I'm guessing if you can fit it well enough you shouldn't see any problems.
I've had very minimal issues with mine installed on my Note 9. I have just two short spider-lines at the top and two at the bottom. Plus there is a little bubbling right on the curve of the screen. These all came after a bump or drop, the install was pristine for months. I'm going with Whitestone again!
I've read its recommended to scan your fingers in several positions and to scan the same finger more than once, to get the best reading, and that's what I'll do.
