Any reason not to relock boot loader after installing Android P Preview 2? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

In following the Essential support page's instructions for installing the Android P Preview 2, I unlocked my boot loader.
Now I'd like to relock the boot loader, but I remember reading a thread here about a guy who tried to relock the book loader after having installed (and maybe uninstalled) a custom ROM. He ended up bricking his phone.
Is there any danger in relocking my boot loader if I have only installed factory-provided versions of Android?
FWIW, my first attempt to load Android P did go well; wifi wouldn't work. I reinstalled Oreo. The next day, I tried side loading Android P, and that went fine.

If you are all stock and no root, no harm in relocking the boot loader.
Just make sure you haven't done any modifications to your phone..

You didn't actually need to unlock your phone to sideload the Android P preview. Sideloading an OTA works with a locked bootloader. Your phone needs to be fully stock if you plan on relocking your bootloader. That means no custom recovery, no root and no modifications to the system partition. You can definitely run the Android P preview with a locked bootloader--I am--but if your bootloader is already unlocked you want to make sure your phone has no custom modifications before relocking it or you will brick your phone. Relocking your booloader will also erase all your data.

I see no reason to relock it whatsoever. High potential risk, and what is the gain?

Passing safety net without screwing around with magisk. And getting OTA's which have been pretty frequent since launch. That's what's kept me stock!

Yeah, I realized that I could sideload the AndP preview only after trying the "recommended" fastboot method described on the Essential site. The only reason I unlocked the bootloader was to flash AndP, following Essential's instructions. Then then fastboot method didn't even work.

Will I not be able to get the next OTA (actually Over The Air) with my bootloader unlocked? Some users have reported that their PH-1s accepted an OTA even with an unlocked bootloader. Here's one example:

Really? I just wanted to confirm this. This could be the reason I leave my bootloader unlocked, since I could presumably sideload the next AndP preview OTA.

Having an unlocked bootloader has no effect on OTAs. Rooting, installing a custom recovery or custom kernel is what causes OTA issues.

Every time you unlock or relock your bootloader it erases your data like a factory reset. But having an unlocked bootloader by itself doesn't prevent you from installing OTAs normally.

I've had my bootloader unlocked on many phones including this one, and use netflix on them all. This is not a common thing and I would say has to do with something else other than that. Apps don't see your bootloader status.....

here's some light reading for you:
https://www.androidcentral.com/netflix-pulls-service-rooted-and-bootloader-unlocked-android-phones
and a quote:
Rooted users started noticing the app gone from Google Play on their devices over the weekend, and Netflix eventually confirmed it did this intentionally. The streaming service is now using Google's Wildvine DRM to block the app from rooted devices that don't pass Wildvine's security status, and its Google Play listing will not appear for devices that fail a SafetyNet check, which not only rules out rooted phones but also unrooted phones that are bootloader-unlocked.r

Hi frnds.
Im using DoomLord's kernal with AniKings Custom ROM.
If I want to go back original Stock SE my PC companian showing error.
pls help me.
It shows error because you must have locked bootloader to use PC Companion or SEUS.
You can go back to stock SE by:
-flashing a .ftf file
-locking your bootloader and using PC Companion or SEUS
Also you have to flash the stock wifi modules if using DooMKernel v15. Flash them before flashing stock SE, otherwise you don't have how to flash them.
How did you unlock your bootloader?

Right, but not a big loss, TrackID and like function in the music player won't work anymore, I didn't ever used the like function, and the TrackID can be replaced by other apps like Shazam or SoundHound, or you can use the new TrackID(I found it in the ICS Themes ROM... that aniking thing). The only risk of unlocking bootloader is that if you brick your phone and can't repair it yourself at least to relock the bootloader, you won't be able to use your warranty.

if that's the only loss of unlocking the bootloader then it's not a big deal, but I don't understand why do people unlock their bootloader if they have a newly released device.

hi, try flashing https://idlekernel.com/twrp/hero2qlte/3.0.0-0/twrp-3.0.0-0-hero2qltetmo.tar.md5
while it isn't for your phone (it's actually for T-Mobile S7 Edge), if it at least flashes then you are in the clear and I will happily port TWRP for G930P.
If the flash fails with SECURE CHECK FAIL, then you are out of luck. (nothing is changed and it won't trip knox)
RESULTS
if it flashes successfully, and trips knox, then you have an unlocked bootloader, and twrp will happen for you in a few days
if it does not flash, it will not trip knox, and nothing will have changed, but you have a locked bootloader
I'll test when I get back home thanks

You may one day become vulnerable to a live root exploit such like TowelRoot, but you will never be able to use a custom recovery, system image (ROM), or kernel.

This is probably on Samsung, not Sprint, tbh.
Either way, the Galaxy 7 customers in the U.S. are completely screwed, as far as ever getting root/recovery/any development for Galaxy 7s goes.
No chance of development means no real need for these forums on XDA, honestly.
(I mean, this is an Android Development website.)
Let the devs figure it out if they can; until that happens there's nothing to really do here. ?
(My device is going back, though.)

I recieved email from Xiaomi stating that bootloader unlock voids warranty.

[Opinion]So as long as its an software issue. Service centre representatives might ignore bootloader status.

I seriously doubt that unlocking of bootloader can void the warranty, it is done by MiFlash automatically, which is official tool from Xiaomi, used for flashing official Xiaomi ROMs. Situation might be different for devices with MIUI and I assume that support used just pre-defined answer to your question.

the best bet is to miflash an older update. the one that doesnt wipe everything when changing bootloader status, then use the old thread which shows the steps to enable eis and camera2api, lock the bootloader, and then update to the aug update via ota. This is the only full proof solution

To flash any (old) ROM, you need to unlock the bootloader. So if you're already updated, there is absolutely no point in flashing old firmware, you'll get factory reset anyway.

search the link you posted the op yourself and quote me a better solution resulting in a locked bootloader and camera2api+eis enabled. The only alternative is to press and hold "volume -" button while running "fastboot oem unlock/lock bootloader" to bypass wipe, but as many have tested and pointed out (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77250310&postcount=3), this method isnt the most reliable as wipe commands are still there in standby and a wipe is triggered whenever the user will boot into recovery (stock/custom). So neither your post provides any solution to the op other than searching threads for answers which he obviously would have done before typing a separate thread, but also you discredit the only viable tried and tested solution the op has atm, congrats. :good:

1. you are on August patch, stock ROM, locked bootloader
2. you suggested to downgrade, for example to January ROM
3. so OP will install January ROM, because January ROM doesn't wipe data. But oh no, it got wiped. How's that possible, someone on the Internet told me it's safe!
4. someone on the Internet didn't really realize, that ROM flashing will unlock the bootloader and as you are already on the recent version, it will wipe your data
5. so not only you wipe your data, you downgraded your system for absolutely no reason, congrats. :good:
And if OP is total noob, he should read first and try to understand how things work. Otherwise he will still be a noob and follow whatever stupid advice he gets. But be my guest (result can be seen here https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/help/mi-a1s-destroyed-locked-please-help-t3839928)..

and specifically where did i said that? and that "blaming" thing, who's even talking to you let alone blame you. I came here just to interact with the op or some other intellectual arguments that seem necessary, not this useless crap which i dont have any interest indulging in

if pressing volume down button while unlocking bootloader was used in this tutorial, remember to backup data before an ota and do not boot into recovery without data backup

Dude, just read what you wrote (hint, second post in this topic). "the best bet is to miflash an older update. the one that doesnt wipe everything when changing bootloader status". You suggested a method which will wipe his data and I only corrected you. Then you brought some personal b**** into this (just re-read what you posted as you obviously forget very quickly)
Btw. if you quote me, you're talking to me. If you don't want to talk to me, don't quote me and don't respond to me. As simple as that Have a nice day/night/whatever.

I was talking about the stock ROM, I was telling the op to flash the stock ROM that doesn't wipe everything when changing bootloader status so that he can enable EIS and relock the bootloader and no wipe will be triggered that would cause that persist commands to revert. Unlocking bootloader is meant to wipe data and there's no way around it other than the "hacks" which will delay the wipe.

That escalated quickly.. If people don't understand you, maybe it's not their fault. Try to think about it. Good bye.

S8 downgrade from Version 9

Hello, Smart people
I tried to search but couldn't find any proper solution. Is it possible to downgrade S8 running on Android 9, I want to install version 8 on it.
Thanks
i am also interested in doing this. i have had my phone for over a year, i was very careful never to download. the other day it popped up as i was taking a photo, and wham. normally i would have ripped the battery out of the back. but no such chances anymore.
the new os sucks huge. big stupid buttons, changes to the camera, the messages are pure misery.
i am on bootloader build 5. i have tried to use odin several times, only to discover this bootloader number thing on these forums.
im going to be furious if last week i was build 1.
at this point i would consider rooting the phone only out of spite to samsung for not letting me customize my phone anymore.

You can only go back to Android 8 if you have bootloader version 4. Use this code on your phone *#1234 # to know your version of bootloader.

Cool I will check after Easter and see what boat loader it is.
If even OEM boot loader is downgrade is off, can I still do it? If it’s version 4?
Thanks

You do not need to shut down OEM to downgrade! Respect only the bootloader version, otherwise it will brikar the cell phone, downgrade before the April patch as it is coming with bootloader version 5.

Use *#1234# or App https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo
You do not need to disable OEM to downgrade.

You can not because Oreo uses bootloader version 4, forcing a downgrade will turn your phone into a brick.

He is right, I did not realize that you use snapdragon and there is yes oreo with version 5 of bootloader so you can do Downgrade normally.
thanks so much for helping guys!
what is the oreo version i have to hunt down.
im on t-mobile.
i tried to backdown using odin, it kept giving me errors. does odin protect the phone lol?
so if i get the proper oreo os, with the boatloader 5, odin will work?
thanks again for helping me out!!!

hey, which one is the one to use? android 8 is oreo?
i tried two 7.0's, and i might have tried the earliest 8.0 on this list.
do i just go higher up, and odin will just bang it in there?
thanks so much again!
I came back to the Oreo, well done system, with fluidity and great performance, Samsung Android Pie is crap.

Version 7.0 uses bootloader version 2, and there is version of Oreo that uses version 2, 3 and 4 of bootloader, do not use these, use this here to have no problems;
