SD card suddenly rendered non-writable - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

A failed backup in DualBoot Patcher has screwed up my SD card. It is now read-only. Details here...

[PATCHER][APP] Dual boot any ROM on all Galaxy S4 variants!
Trying to scrape the cobwebs out of my brain to remember how I fixed this issue before on my little Galaxy Light a long time ago.
Any ideas?

Looks like no matter the method, something's gonna get wiped. Bleh.

All night. All day. Multiple toolkits. Lost cause. No matter if at times something seemed successful, it reverts to same partition, same filesystem, same contents, same used/free space. Bah.
Oh well, at least I was able to offload everything.

Well, one thing you can know for sure is that it wasn't DBP, because this is just very normal. The axon7 is an SD killer for some reason, but after some (a lot more) time it'll happen with any phone. How old was the SD card?
My axon7 broke an 8gb SD card that I used mostly as swap on my moto g2 before, with swappiness 100 for like a year.
At least they become read-only so you can get them stuffs out

Yep, DBP was off the hook. Backup hit a bad section of the card but tried its best to keep going.
I think I got the phone only about a year ago so the card sure didn't last too long. Cards used on my G3 are still going strong after years. SD slot died on two G3s (access cards via OTG now), reason I got the Axon.
In the meantime I was going to use a 64GB card I have until I checked out the contents. All kinds of 2014 G3 goodies. Original firmware and backups, custom KitKat stock ROMs (SkyDragon, ZoneROM, CloudyG3), long lost/forgotten apps and things, etc. Just couldn't wipe out that stuff.
Guess I'll have to buy a new card.

Don't worry, my Axon 7 killed (not writable) my 128GB card just after 2 months and half killed (corrupted files but still writable) another 64GB one after 1 month. These days I just save photos on phone and use card for media that can easily be replaced.

My 128GB sandisk card just became unwriteable after 6 months of use in my Axon 7. I want to blame the phone, because the total amount of data I've written to the card over its lifetime was about 100 GB.
Maybe I'll wait until the official version of Oreo gets released on the off chance it's an issue they have corrected. I honestly don't know if the Axon 7 is to blame, but I feel like I'm seeing a higher than average number of people reporting micro sd card failures with this phone.

Same issue with my A2017 4GB 128GB version. Killed a Samsung 128GB EVO SELECT SD card within 6 months, rendered unwritable (and undeletable), formatting does nothing. It contained sensitive information from work, and I had to destroy the SD card.

I had this happen and Sandisk replaced it for free. Odd that it happened to someone else too.

It is. It's known that this phone obliterates cards. That's why people are just changing them under warranty every time they get broken, but it's obviously a hassle

Oh right, I probably have a warranty. I didn't think about that. Good thing I saved all the packaging.
Is there any chance that running a different ROM would improve sd card longevity? Or does the problem likely exist on a hardware level and can't be corrected?

I run a few ROMs, rarely run stock, so I can't say if stock is the reason for the failures.
However, I think I was using stock at the time my card went bad when I was doing backups.
Now I'm not sure if it's ROM or hardware.

If it's sandisk, you don't need all the packaging. It's finally 2018 and companies begrudgingly admit that yes, everything is electronic and no you don't need receipts/packaging for everything.
I just took a screenshot of my amazon invoice and a picture of the front/back of the card. Sandisk paid shipping and shipped me a new one. Gratis!

Also just had a 128GB sandisk die in my A7. Can't be detected by anything. Maybe microsd cards just suck..

Transcend 32gb sd card that i have 2 years works well here and phone detects it as Transcend too.

just formatted it with EASYUS to FAT32 and it works. Copied my 32gb content over and did not even have to redo my home screens. I also partitioned it to use with link2sd but have not yet tried out linking any apps.

any screenshot, to confirm...
i'm going to buy it, if it really works....
thanks...
I bought from play.com directly and it works. I saw them on amazon.co.uk cheaper but the one from amazon says 2-4 weeks delivery and the one from their market place third party i did not want to take the risk with. I can do the screenshot later but I promise you it works. I made it into two partitions now one FAT32 and another ext2 for link2sd and started moving some apps incl data and library files to get more internal space. so far a did only a couple of apps and after reboot it shows more free internal memory but I want to do more to see proper effect. will report on that later.
SDHC or SDXC?
Ok, we'll wait for it, can you show us also the storage info screenshot of your link2sd, I just wanna see how you did that 2 partition, mine has ext2 only..

Forgive me for not really understanding this thread, but a few questions:
Why is it so amazing that a 64gb SD card works? Why wouldn't a 64gb SD card work? Is this likely to only work with certain brands or certain phones? If I get a sandisk 64gb SD card should I expect any problems?

The Xperia Play is listed as only having an SDHC MicroSD port. SDHC officially, only supports up to 32GB per the specifications. The newer SDXC specification supports capacities up to 2TB.
That said, I think the OP poster should use one of the the free testing apps in the market like SD Card Tester, etc. to try filling up the card with real data. I've often seen cases of cards reporting more capacity than they can actually hold/access and errors may not occur until you try to actually fill up the space with real data despite the reported capacity from the OS appearing ok. This is especially common with Chinese e-bay sellers, etc. selling mislabeled memory cards that start giving errors when you start filling them up.

I know what you mean that's way did not even wont to buy from marketplace amazon sellers just in case they had fakes for some reason. I have filled it with the content of almost full 32GB card and did not have any problems yet - most fake cards are much smaller capacity than 32gb so I don't think I will have a problem.

The reason I was so amazed is that I asked people on the forum here and was told it would not work above 32GB but it does. Someone on the tablet did the same thing with 128GB SD card but not micro form factor. So now we know and I hope it helps someone who like me before was not sure if it would work.

Try going over 32gb with data and see what happens when trying to read it back. The free SD card tester in the market can make it very easy..slide the slider to the right and see how it does.

thanks for the screenshot you provided...
again question...
any lag with HD games?
I find it faster but it could be because I also started using app2sd and now have more internal memory. I used to get force close/wait messages before even in settings and play launcher menus and my low on space message would be triggered frequently - now it is no problem

Hi, I just bought a Sandisk 64GB card for my Xperia Play and I can confirm it's working fine. I used the above app to verify my card that already had about 14GB of data on it, which can also be seen in the screenshot below (the max amount of data i could test was ~46GB, which is about right... 60-14 = 46).
I set it to write another 25GB for a total of ~39GB and it had to problems.
This took about three hours to test, and if i shut off the screen it stopped testing... as you can see my battery almost died. I'm glad I didn't try filling it up fully
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.

MicroSD 64Gbyte

Since a lot of people think the DHD is going to get old and move to phones like the HOX, I just want to tell you that the new microSD cards with a capacity of 64Gbyte work on this great device! The HOX doesn't even have half of this capacity.
And...ICS is coming too! We still have some great devs here.
There is no need to buy a new phone.
If I haven't already bought the HOX, I would stay with my beloved DHD
Post 8 is card name and pic!
If this was helpful, please push THANKS.
Yea I'm too staying with my HTC Desire HD , but have you tried the 64gb card in your HTC Desire HD?

IT DEFINITELY WORKS with 64gb.
Those saying it doesn't work didn't try it.

Does it have to be a specific 64 gb sd card or any will do?
I think any card is good...as far as is not a cheap clone and is an SDXC it will work (once formatted)
I too am happy to stick with my Desire HD. :good:
...or we could get another next gen phone THAT ALSO SUPPORTS MicroSD... ie SGS3... ^_~ ...not got one btw... but just stating an obvious logical answer besides sticking with our faithful DHDs
imho its a bad move for HTC to remove SDcard support... capacity for external storage for those type of media will only get bigger...
...opportunity to have 64GB (or more) on your smartphone just can't be easily dismissed. Especially if you carry around a ton of multimedia files as well as a chunk of your work and have a ton of pictures and a good part of your music collection! >_< lol!
ie my 1 and a half hour work commutes would be almost unbearable without my DHD with its 32GB card chock full of goodies to keep me from going insane in crappy uk public transport... @[email protected]
Yeah.
Personally, as far as function is concerned, there is little logical use in changing phones for me. I do in fact have a few more months before my contract expires and I'd like to eventually choose a very new phone that I can also support on my site without being a few months behind everyone else.
Having said that, unless another model has superior battery power consumption/time then I don't have a need for a different device. Like you, I commute throughout the day and therefore need the power to last me through the day, so I tend to limit YouTube, GPS or other things which happily eat away at the battery.
The idea of having loads stored on my device on a large SD Card is fine, but based on the above, I wouldn't use much of it.
The idea of losing the phone with so many eggs in one basket is not very appealing.
The idea of a bigger screen though like the Galaxy Note (which my barber has and showed me) is nice. I'd also consider future devices with removable rear covers, so that it's easy for companies like Mugen to make extended batteries for them. From experience that's real peace of mind.
The Microsoft Surface Tablet looks like a nice device which I could use for work maybe. If that became a primary toy, then maybe a phone would take a less important back seat for a while.

DHD + latest Lord's ICS build (8.2 as I type this) with radio 26.13.04.19 has a great battery life even with all the hammering it takes from using DicePlayer, PowerAmp, exchange Email, Dolphin, XDA Premium and even games like temple run & zenonia 4...
With the above usage... I get the trip to work, actual work usage (i have my desk phone on divert to my mobile) and the trip home... all in one nights charge... so I only need to put it on charge before I go to bed.
Hell, I've even forgot to charge it overnight and I was still able to crawl through most of the day... with charging it late afternoon, ready for the 2nd half of the movie I was watching on my trip to work! >_< hahaha!

I hear you there dude... I had my 1st DHD nicked through a burglary... =(
However, all I ever lost was my 1st 32GB class10 MicroSD as well as my nandroids...
All my files, movies, music and photos exists on multiple devices... so anything that was on my DHD is a copy from my other machines...
...pity I didn't do the same with my Nandroid... I keep them locally for the purpose of error recovery... would've kept copies of it off the device had I wanted to be safeguarded from potential theft... =_=
As it's looking now.. unless HTC starts building new units with SD support, I'll not be jumping on their new range quite just yet...
If November 2012 hits and they've not released a device that fits the bill for me... its looking a lot like I'll be going for SGS3... =_=

Q for 64gb card users

Today I noticed the sd card area of my phone was heating up. Checked fauxclock and all cores were steady at 1.2ghz. Unmounted card, and everything was fine. I thought it may have been a kernel issue as this happened once before with my old 16gb card, but a reboot solved it that time.
I'm on mint jelly v2.1, faux 005m and using SanDisk 64gb class 10 uhs1 formatted to fat32 using a program from download.com I found in another thread on xda (yes I did my research on this before posting).
Is anyone else noticing stuff like this? If not how did you format your card, what settings did you use to format it?
I've read that Samsung's tend to reject SanDisk cards, but this seems like more of a bad format or maybe corrupt file on the card. I pulled a log, and when the card is mounted the log becomes inundated with hits from facial recognition(face unlock perhaps?)
Here's the log:

Have you moved any apps to SD? That will cause the card to be powered all the time.
I am running 64gb sandisk card on stock rom with no issues.
Not a one
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
So I reformatted, loaded stuff back up, and got the same issue. I did learn it only happens when there are pictures on the SD card though. If I take the pics off, and just leave data like backups, the cores peg for a few seconds then shut down like normal. WTF is going on here. Is face unlock trying to scan all 8 gigs of pictures for faces? lost...
One or more of your picture files is probably corrupted.

Copy your data off the card, reformat it, and see if it reoccurs. If it doesn't, then try putting your data back on one folder at a time with Camera photos last and see what happens.
If there are _A_LOT_ of photos Gallery could be creating and saving thumbnails in the background.
Let me guess, you have a Sandisk 64gb card
I did a full format using the gui formatter last night. Loaded it back up, same thing. Took all the pics off, and it's all better. So I took my old 16gb card and put it in, which I haven't touched and it worked fine when I took it out, and the cores pegged again. So I said maybe it's the rom... Even though both cards worked fine with pics up until I made the op. I factory reset it, still the same! Everywhere I go with my troubleshooting I hit a brick wall.
I'm entertaining the gallery thumbnail idea, but that to me doesn't explain the overflow of facial recognition in the log.

I have a 64gb Sandsik UDA-1 in mine. Been almost a month now fine. Althought I've reformatted it myself willingly a few times. (exFat > ext4 > exFat > Fat32) depending on the ROM i was using and whether they support exFat or EXT4.
It seems they are very hit and miss. This is very frustrating. But my 16gb card is a transcend, and like I said I had the same problem with it...

SO.... I unfroze the gallery, stuck my old sd card back in chock full of pics and videos. It warmed up quite nicely. Cores stated steady at 1.242 for a good 20 minutes and burnt 15 percent of my battery. Then all the sudden... Nothing. Core 1 idling at 384. Maybe I made a big deal about nothing, sort of. I've never encountered such an issue... Maybe someone who knows more than I can explain why the phone feels the need to scan every file with reckless abandon when a card is inserted.
I'll transfer everything back to my SanDisk 64gb and report back if anyone gives a crap

[Q] Where is SD Card Located, LG G2

First of all hi, I'm new here
I'm searching for the Micro SD Card already installed in my LG G2(16GB), I know that this phone doesnt have Micro SD Slot, but there !MUST! be a Micro SD Card. For example same situation was with my HTC Surround, there was no additional SD Card Slot, but when I dissambled the phone i found the slot, chandet SD card with new 32 GB card and everything worked very well.
so please help, and sorry for my English, I know I made a lot of mistakes
Don't think it's like that in the G2. Internal memory is not an SD card but a memory module soldered directly onto the motherboard.

I think you got it right in that sentence I'm afraid. Memory is usually soldered straight to the main board in the phone.. Not removable or replaceable.. I may be wrong but that's 99% likely from what I know..

Now, about the SD card, I'm sure it's there inside the phone, probably right underneath of the PCB board or maybe it's even inside one of those layers. Rip it apart and check it out.

Agreed. But make sure you take all of the shields etc off to make sure it's not hiding under one of them.
Its invisable.
before you mess up the device
<common sense mode on>
don't you think someone would already found it and post the image on the internet and the news would be allover the android portals? (xda, android central ...)
<common sense mode off>
which variant of the g2 is it?
because i think that only korean variant has a separate micro sd cart slot
anyway, let us know how it went
are you guys being trolls or have no common sense. Only the Korea model has the SDcard slot and removable battery. Since you found it laying in it's original box, read the manual that came with it.

Is there any chance to upgrade memory or add extra microsd slot for LG G2 16 GB version?
I am running out space and this is only one thing which I dont like with my phone, I spend lots of time to find best ROM and to customize everyting for my need.
I was thinking about upgrading to galaxy s7 but I havent got time to customizing again everything, and I guess original ROM will be slower and slower with time, even on such a new phone like S7.
thanks for help

You spend a lot of time to find best ROM and customize everything for your need, and yet you haven't got time to customize an S7, if you got one?!
And which phone doesn't get slower and slower with time?
You don't need a phone!

No I havent got time for this,
which one is not getting slower and slower ? my LG G2 is same like it was in 2014 but only when I am using my ROM, on the original one probably would be different.

128GB Micro-SD possible?

I was reading dfferent information about that so far.
Is it possible to use the 128GB Micro-SD Card on the Note 4, like it is on the S5?
Thanks!

Yes it is. In fact, I'm using a 128GB in my Note 3 right now. Look on amazon for the sanDisk 128GB microsd. I heard that one works with the S3 and up.
I would also like to find this out as well I assume it will but rather than guess like previous poster would like to see someone actually test it.
Both gsmarena and android central state 64gb max and that is the same for the note edge.
A lot of older phones stated they would only support 16gb micro sd cards but would work with 32gb cards so assume if you had a decent card you should be fine just stay away from the cheapies.
It'll work. My 64gb card, when formatted Fat32 works in my old N95, so any suggestion 128gb cards won't work here is utterly false.

There's no guessing going on here, it 100% will work.
128GB cards work in phones all the way back to the S2, they'll be just fine in the Note 4.
I believe the confusion circling the internet is based on the Note 4 having "up to 64GB INTERNAL storage". Any device that supports SDXC can "technically" support up to 2TB, but the tech is currently limited to 128GB. Disregard anything people are saying about the Note 4 only supporting up to a 64GB MicroSD, it's complete nonsense.
Just bought a 128gb class 10 and was getting nervous with all the specs calling out for 64gb max in the Note 4. The Note 4 has more upgrades, specs & build than any other new SmartPhone this year. Love the Note 4, looks, build and specs. Only thing I was hoping for was 64gb of int storage or maybe even 128. Manufacturers need to start stepping up int storage, this nickel & dime crap is lame. Never have enough int storage. Getting mine in white.

My concern with the 128 GB card, is that it's not exactly rated to be the quickest, which makes me wonder, if it's going to suffer as a result. The card I currently have in my S5 is only a 64GB Samsung Evo (48Mbps), but seem to do fine. I just don't want a weak link.
Personally, I'm going to compromise with a 64GB, but have almost double the speed of the currently available 128GB card.
This is the card I opt'd for, to use with the Note 4. -HERE

Samsung Evo is up to 90MB/s. It is pretty fast. 128GB can't reach this speed. I also use Meenova Dash reader to extend the storage.
As far as I know this is from Samsung officially and it says up to 64 GB micro sd maximum.

Correct. They've said nothing about 128gb, and have only mentioned the 64gb SD Cards.
If this comes true I will not buy a Note 4.

Cool. A lot of other people will.
Even if it can, the card is still too expensive. 64gb is the good zone.

Interestingly I just visited their official micro site of Note 4.It justifies what you said. NOW, go to the official micro site of Note 3 and there you will see it says the same i.e., up to 64 GB whereas people who are using a Note 3 are already using a 128 GB card in their note 3's which are working.
Hope that this will be the same with the note 4.
Don't worry. Samsung said the same about Note 3 but all(most) people can use 128GB.
Ya, I'm even using a 256GB sdxc card in my note 3 and it works fine. Total space on my note 3 is 288GB. Don't worry about the note 4. It will support just as much if not more.
Can you share a link for the 256GB sdxc?
