Best return ad networks for both Android as well as iOS - Mobile Ad Networks

Hey guys,
New here in the forum and I hope I am not replicating a question and if so - sorry in advance!
We're developing our first game (as a new independent brand).
It's a casual game with similar playability to Sonic Jump, which will be released on both Android as well as iOS.
The game is built in Buildbox, so I'd like to know which ad networks (with an SDK) give the best return in:
1. Loading interstitials (entry)
2. Popunders
3. Video
4. In between ads (an ad that pops every five "game overs" or so)
Naturally, if you could shed some light on both Android as well as iOS, that would be super.

Hi All,
Just to shed some light on this since, I've been in the ad monetization industry for 3 years now. It does get quite complicated so I'll try to keep this brief and keep it relevant to the question. One thing to understand is, the better the engagement, the higher the ad revenue. I.e Advertisers spend money to advertise, to acquire new customers. If your app or specific ad format is producing that desired result, you're going to make good revenue.
The ad formats that produce the best results in order:
1. Offer-wall (Incentivise users to install app for in-app reward. You've helped the advertiser acquire a new user)
2. Rewarded video (Incentive users to watch a video in return for in-app reward. You've helped the advertiser view a full length video which does produce good conversions but not definitely)
3. Video interstitial (Full screen Video that pops up in the users journey of the app. Skippable and does produce results, but no where as much as rewarded video)
4. Static interstitial (Full screen ad that pops up in the users journey. Can use good engagement, but sometimes can be accidental, leading to a high bounce rate)
5. Native (Non-intrusive and user-friendly ads that have the same look and feel of the content of the page. Some consider as best looking ads, especially for article/news publications. Can pay on CPM/CPI depends on the network and campaign)
6. Banners (Sits at the bottom of the page. Low user engagement. But great if you have a huge user base)
It is always best to find a balance between ad monetization and User experience. Because 1. You want to keep your users and 2. You want to make the highest revenue possible. I've seen cases where publishers have an amazing app, but have completely ruined it by bombarding their users with ads, and other cases where an app is again amazing with a great user base, but has not been updated for improved services because the developer did not have the funds.
For a gaming app like Sonic Jump, I would heavily consider rewarded video formats as a number 1. Depending on the game play, maybe throw in some interstitial/video interstitial in between levels.
If you want I can take a look at the app and offer some suggestions. I work with many ad networks and categories of publishers so I can give insight to a thing or two

Android vs IOS - Why Android is better

So we've all been there: trying to explain to an Apple fan why Android is better.
Well here I've compiled a list of the reasons why Android is better, while I'm open to any suggestions or corrections.
I'm not an Android fanboy, I'm a fan of technology and I own Apple devices, so this is pretty objective.
I'm leaving out my personal preferences and opinions, only putting my examples into cases the average user will find himself in.

2. IOS has fake multitasking where you can't download while doing anything else and apps are put into suspension when you leave them and stop running.
3. Google apps are much better on Android with better interfaces(e.g. YouTube) and more functionality (e.g. Chrome, Navigation)
4. There is no Flash player on IOS
5. Sharing is very limited on IOS where you simply don't get the choices you get on Android
6. File Management on IOS simply isn't there so you can't attach anything to emails or messages
7. The Appstore may have more apps and "better" games but it doesn't have the functionality and productivity the Play Store has. Simply because Android gives you the option if you want to give a life-saving app like Cerberus, administrator permissions
8. Flexibility and customization - Android is capable of beautiful things while still not rooted. e.g. Shortcuts that take you into specific parts of an app, Notificiation Toggles, widgets, multiple launchers etc.
9. Notifications- IOS users may miss a call, but unless they manually check the notifications bar, they've got no clue about it.
10. The small screen on the iPhone is up to personal preferences, but it has 4:3 aspect ratio which is old technology and makes watching videos terrible
11. The hardware is really fragile as it takes one drop to ruin everything, while the buttons often don't work after a (long) period of time with the phone
12. Jailbreaking an IOS device gives less freedom than rooting does. People may have to downgrade to jailbreak or may lose their apps when updating to new software. How annoying is that?
13. IOS devices don't have external memory
14. IOS devices don't have fm radio
15. IOS devices don't have a smartdialer
16. IPhone has lesser specs than high-end Android devices e.g. NFC thus less features( Wallet)
17. The contacts integration is much weaker on IOS
18. You don't have the freedom to select default app for a specific action on IOS, so you can't get e.g. Swype Keyboard
19. Emulation on Android is much wider and way better while still not rooted
20. Connectivity with devices of a different brand is unheard of at Apple- whilst on Android you can wirelessy connect to PS3, XBOX, TV, PC, controllers etc
I left my opinion for the very end. I believe that IOS devices are overpriced, overrated and mainstream. This is the reason that overrules all for me because People buy IOS devices just because it has the Apple logo on it. This disgusts me ( and I'm sure most Android users) as it shows ineffable ignorance.
So there are all these (incredibly) annoying gripes on IOS, yet people still buy iPhones which is something really incomprehensible.
Android isn't perfect: it suffers from some ecosystem issues, slow updates(which is going to be fixed with the coming of Jelly bean), bloatware (removable when rooted), fragmentation etc.
However Android has progressed at such a rapid pace compared to IOS these past years, that it simply is much more promising and full of potential.
P.S IOS6 was announced after I wrote this. Since we don't know what Jellybean is going to be like, there shouldn't be any comparison until both are running. However, it is clear that Apple is trying to catch up with Android with the release of IOS6, as most features have been working on Android phones in one way or another.
Well most is correct but I think belongs in the android section. Not the Xperia PLAY section.
And whats the point on this thread? :S if you want something simple go with iOS if you want custom roms, themes and moding go with Android, Some say that iOS are better for woman, because they usualy like simple and easier things, I have a iPhone and the Xperia Play, they are both great but I perfer the Xperia Play because I can mod it and use custom roms, but that doesnt make the Android Better, it depends much of the point of view of the person, please Remember that iOS and Android are aimed for diferent things! If I dint care about Hacks, mods, themes, tweaks, etc, I'll probably be better with just a iPhone.
iOS is good for people who want a phone OS that hides the options and multitasking from the user. I prefer the iOS for my tablets because I like the large screen for 1.5 apps at a time (music and web browsing for example). On my phone I prefer customizing it to exactly what I like. That for me is why I have an Xperia Play. I get exactly what I want. Long live choices for phones!

I guess you're another genius that doesn't know the order of things at xda. If you can't go by the rules then there's no need for you to be at xda. There is an android general forum for bs like this. THIS specific division is pertaining to xperia plays NOT android os. Read and learn.

I have to agree with you (the OP) on apple vs. Android.
I've had an itouch for 2 years now ( 1st year it was a 1st gen and 2nd and on.it is 4th gen) and ever since I got my play my itouch sits in my speaker dock on I heart radio with Air1 radio.....it hasn't left the dock in months.
My two android devices though ( my cm7 nook color and my play), I use constantly. I use my nook if I want a bigger screen for gaming emulators while using my ps3 controller and stand/case I got from best buy, and my play for everything else, even emulators when I'm on the go and don't have a need to carry my nook color around....plus we can.change roms whenever we want, where as with apple products we have to do the tidious jailbreaking to even do any some of good stuff.

Sorry man, I know this is the wrong section. I was in a hurry when I was posting this and it ended up here by accident. I'm pretty new here, so I'm not sure what I have to do to put things right though.
I own both and both are good.
It's really a personal opinion on which is better. So this is a pointless thread which is also posted in the wrong section. And exactly what are you trying to achieve with this? You expect all Apple users to abandon ship over this post? Everyone knows the difference, flaws and positives of each device and choose accordingly to their needs. So why do you need to explain to an Apple user why android is better? Sh*ts and giggles? You say you're not a fan boy but this thread pretty much confirms you are. Sell your Apple products and stick with android, no one cares. I share with my wife and son an Xplay, GNex, and 4s for our phones + an iPad2, Kindle Fire and Asus Transformer prime for our tablets and we feel none of them are better than another. It's up to the user, your fan boy rage is wasting space.

-this may be true but this also opens up the risk of malicious files being transmitted through the devices.

Well you know android. They are specialy made. Like the xpria play is for gamers and the HTC chacha is for Facebook geeks and the htc wildfire s is for teens. We all have our own android.
Lets just agree that blackberry is worst then android or iPhone.

Importance of Group Playtest for Game/App Development

Digital Eclairs went to Pinewood's after school program called AppLab, focused on getting kids more hands on on new electronics coming up.
We presented our project XnO, with multiple handled devices to kids (age group 8-12). After the first 15 mins of hands on experience, they were really enjoying the gameplay, comparing it to different games titles and how it was better, why they liked 3D, asking questions on when the app would be released, and they were very interested in knowing about the process of how it was created.
It showed us that 3D environments were a welcome change, kids respond well to warm colors we used. We set each kid on a different level and they seemed comfortable playing and getting familiar with the app. Some kids responded very well with the higher levels and some not so well because we had not ramped them through the initial gameplay, but after a few tries they started to get the hang of the game and when they were able to win they were really happy. In retrospect we realized that this was a bit of a difficult learning curve for someone new coming to this game, but with the release upon us we had to move forward with what he had. In order to give people a taste of the game on the iOS we released with a showcase of 5 levels, which looking back on it now, care is needed when choosing the level of difficulty to the casual gamer.
The Accelerometer presented an interesting challenge to the kids, once they figured out they could lift the device and tilt it left and right to move the character they were able to pick up on it quick and continue with how they had been completing the levels previously. We were short few devices and a few kids had to share the same device. The ones who were collaborating did very well on higher levels taking turns and really engaging in the game and helping each other and were faster in adapting to the game. This helped us understand that putting out a physics puzzled based game would definitely require a walkthrough to help the community through some of those tough levels.
As a developer with our first game a week away from release, it was an exhilarating experience to see our product being enjoyed by these kids. Their eagerness to explore all the game features gave us so much satisfaction and all the pain and efforts in building this game were totally worth it. The kids were very interested in knowing the process of how the game was made and when they were asked for feedback they all jumped in saying: They loved double headed turtle and wanted a three headed turtle, in-game currency that they can use to buy in things in game like weapons, wallpaper, and many more suggestions.
To anyone who want to make their own game, arrange group play tests ahead of time once you have a working build. You will get wonderful insight into your game. We had initially done a lot a individual testing from industry people, which is very useful and should not be ignored but for a complete overview on a game and end user perspective go for group tests, as individual test can sometimes be misleading. And do it as soon and as often as possible.

How-To White-Box a Game (Making of XnO Part II)

No story is complete without its origins. We love to share with you the very first white-box environment of XnO!
XnO began its origins from the name "Ice Breakers", the way the cylindrical blocks were breaking. We had 3 walls couple of boxes from unity asset packages. And began the journey. We wanted to take a simple idea and implement in it all the possible depths.
When we began majority of the games were 2D or side scrollers, that never gave the player full satisfaction of real life interaction with physics of the objects. So we chose a 3D engine, as to why "unity" - the amount of tutorials, community support and ease of start was a key factor in choosing that engine.
To be a team you would need atleast 3 components to begin with - programmer, 2D/3D artist and level designer. Not to say one person can handle more than one aspect. As a team we were all on the same page, we want to make a physics based game with focus on gameplay first.
We followed the following steps:
i) Create first level - We used very basic components - rectangle, sphere, cylinder to create a game play scenario.
ii) Create a flow through of the game - Main Menu, Options and Level Select Screens. Once this was done adding new levels was very easy.
iii) In Game HUD - To enter and exit from any level
iv) Uploaded a web version for our friends/family to play.
Once we had all the pieces then we focussed on exploring all the possible depths and variations in the gameplay that can be achieved to make the game engaging and fun. In our case - target variations, introducing obstacles, power-ups, use of accelerometer to enhance gameplay. Once we had built the key features in, we explored on how to increase difficulty of the levels as the game progressed. At this stage we made some of our models, used some from unity and still used royalty free music.
Once we had good 20 levels working with all the above, we started showing it to people who either played a lot of games or were in gaming. This gave us a good insight on how improve.
As an indie developer it was so much easier for us to do the white-box the way we did because we focussed on Gameplay and Game Design, not so much on the art in the beginning. So when we got the feedback to change, it was so much easier to do it. We were never set in stone.
XnO is our attempt at making a 3D game with as close as possible to real physics without sacrificing the gameplay and memory footprint of the game. XnO is now available on Google Play and Amazon App Store.

Aims to help kids and young students with memorization and to enable them to respond quickly to different levels of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. A countdown timer option is available to vary the difficulty and to test their problem-solving efficiency. Ads making little money (pic included). Does 80-100k impressions = $5-9 seem normal?

This is using AdMob: banners (a lot) & interstitials (a lot) & rewarded video (once a day), most users in the United States/Europe (but I got people all over the world), 30 second refresh rate.
Also running Facebook Audience Network native ads, which are even worse - about 1/3 of what AdMob earns me. Makes no sense cause those FAN ads are super pretty and there are more of them...
70-100k eyeballs a day and can't even afford a burrito, double meat + guac being completely out of the question.... This makes me really sad. Should I just get a job? :c
Would sincerely appreciate any advice!

Hi,
It means your approximate eCPM is 9/90 = 10 cents - quite low for those geos. This being it varies by the ad formats - I would suggest scaling with rewarded videos and video ads in general. Try the usual suspects - Adcolony, Vungle, Applovin. Hope it helps
These are terrible numbers. Even banners should be higher. My guess is you are getting very poor fill rates. Check your dashboards to see what eCPM is being reported. If it's like 90 cents or something like what habrcovi said, then that's it. But if it shows numbers like $1.50 or $3 or anything higher it just means really low fill rates.

Thats really too low. You should definitely try other platforms.
Check the eCPM calculator to know the approx sum you may earn in these geos. You can find one on Clickky's website (monetize - self-serve)
This is definitely weird - it might be poor fill rates, but I doubt that. I have 60-70% fill rates for banner ads, but they still generate good money. Interstitials over 95%.
Country ratios are same as mine so no problems here. If you had most of your users from somewhere outside the US/Europe - that would have definitely be the case.
I'm thinking either your ads aren't correctly placed or are shown at the wrong moment. Or you're using the wrong ad for your game/app. It would help a lot if you could explain what's your app about and when and what type of ads are you showing.
I'm getting about 150$ for 100k impressions, my problem is that not many users download or use my apps. The amount of impressions you make in a day = my impressions in a month.
I would look into using an ad mediation network to find something that works well for you. You should be able to see which has better fill and ecpm.
It is difficult to say which networks will perform best for each developer, so mediation is a good start.

It is important to not evaluate only eCPM or only fill rate. If you have a high fill rate at a .10 cent eCPM, or a high eCPM (1.5-3$) at a low fill rate, you will be dissatisfied with the results. I suggest that you troubleshoot and see if something is awry. Moreover, you would benefit from diversifying your portfolio. Try out some of your inventory with some other companies and see which performs best for you. I can suggest Tappx as a quality company .
There are a lot of SDK that allow you to earn money.
I prefer Luminati SDK (luminati.io/sdk), or MonkeySocks SDK (monkeysocks.net/sdk/) - with the last one i have working long time because it easy to get started.

Stats like this are not normal. Especially being over 10k. impressions.
Like other members here suggested, I'd say mediation is the way to go: Appodeal, IronSource, Apploving, etc.

I think that the issue is that you show too many ads to your audience. If you could give us some data on your daily active users (DAU), then, probably, we would find out that it is 10-20-30 times less than the number of your daily impressions.
And, as you probably know, the more impressions - not the better
