Getting To The Root of The Scroll Lag - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Okay, I've done some observations on the scroll lag issues and here's what I know.
- It persists on 8.1 ROMs too
- It mostly affects custom ROMs
- Switching kernels does not fix it
- Max CPU and GPU does not fix it (even OC)
Here's my suspected causes:
- Our touchscreen driver is bad
- Our touchscreen panel is bad
- Included screen protector is bad (anyone have scroll lag without it?)
Tell me if you notice this too, but when I scroll with my finger in the top right edge, I get almost 0 lag when scrolling. Is it possible its the display sensitivity that isn't stable? Do you feel this too? Maybe its other areas of the screen too.
Please share your ideas and thoughts. We really want to fix this issue as the phone would be so amazing if it didn't lag EVERYWHERE.

I think it's a combination of both : bad touchscreen and bad driver's as it seems to affect both stock, Caf and Los . I did a test with an old Samsung note 4 an iPhone 5s and a Huawei p20 Pro and it seems that there are certain "gaps" in the panel that when in usage register touches with a certain latency . This and also the sub par refresh rate. Even the old iPhone/note had better touch accuracy under heavy load.
I guess this is the price you pay for a 150 euro phone. Some corner's will be cut.

I can update the drivers from another kernel. Do you get hot spots on the A1 that you can notice (for me top right very edge)?

Honestly, I've replaced my tianma display in service centre for screen retention issue, i got ilitek ones then the display is super smooth n scrolling is smooth. it's the problem withth your display ",faulty display"

Do you get lag when scrolling at the edge of the screen? For me its smooth on the very edges.

Sorry for late reply. Not really hot spots or you could call them hot spots but the are in a H pattern across the display. Also touch accuracy is abysmal.
Now I've installed Flyme OS the problem still persists that and the screen becoming tottaly unresponsive. But the proximity sensor bug it's gone, so altleast that is a good thing.
If they don't fix altleast some of the bugs in 8.1 I'm goona smash this crap phone into a wall

I think it's a bad driver or a bad digitizer. Imma try to fix it soon

You can replicate this lag 100% of the times with this "method", at least for me. Use your thumb with as much flesh touching the screen and then slowly drag your finger. You can notice the scroll lag in every direction.

Same with me, firstly, I thought it is bug of xiaomi rom, may be this will be fix with custom kernel and custom rom. But when custom rom came to mia1, try so many rom but laggy still there, really disapointed.
It is awkward that seem mia1 is the only xiaomi face with this issue. Redmi 5a - lowest price phone of Xiaomi is fine and MI5x same spec with mia1 doesn't have any complain about laggy scroll.

I discovered that if you have two fingers on the screen there's no lag. So use one finger and hold it, then start scrolling with your other thumb. 0 lag. It's gotta be a driver thing. I've been working on micro optimizing it but its gotta be something with the scanning frequency when there's only one finger. But frequency is a firmware thing and I dont think we can gen a firmware blob without a manufacturer tool. It's also possible it's a voltage thing (which I can set in the driver). I'll keep working on it but I think its definitely fixable.

Hey guys i dont know this problem, just bought one, does it easily notice?, how can i check it?

It's mostly a software issue, just flashed August nougat rom and the scroll was a little more responsive

Did you start having the issue when you first got the phone or after you first flashed a custom ROM? Maybe its a persist thing.

[Q] Touch sensitivity / faulty touch input ZUK Z1 display

Got my Z1 two days ago and this annoys me like hell:
Sometimes I have to rather touch the display with more pressure so the digitizer reacts to my input.
I installed a touch test app and when putting my finger slowly and gentle at the display I get no app output.
If I intensify the touch it reacts. Cuz of this sometimes when going through the UI I have to press an UI element two times or a bit harder.
This is the first time that a device I got has such a problem. The problem is there with tempered glass and with a hybrid display protect layer (plastic glass hybrid).
Never using any device without display protection.
Faulty hardware? Please no. I ordered at efox shop which really is a pain in the **s when it comes to warranty and RMA.
My Mi4 (RIP) even reacted when just hovering above the display, and had a very accurate touch input system.
So this is why this annoys me like hell. The ZUK touch input is not precise and the sensitivity sucks.
Did any of you experience something like that with your Z1?
Update:
I was very pissed first, installed a test tool for the touch.
It could be seen totally clear that the touch was not very precise. I could touch the screen very very softly, then giving more pressure and nothing happened. Pressing more harder the tocu test app gave output.
I thought; well I'll have to send it back because the digitizer is faulty.
I flashed unrooted stock cm-12.1-YOG4PAS3OH-ham-signed.zip from the Cyaonogen OS website then after making a full wipe (keeping my SD-memory untouched).
Same problem again, the touch sucked, even lag was less and the fresh flash got me a more fluid experience. I was wondering though; trebuchet and music FX FC'd various times.
I guess cOS YOG4PAS3OH is just buggy...
I flashed cm-12.1-20151211-NIGHTLY-ham.zip from the CM site then, because I did not want to give up.
Clean install of the newest nightly and voilà... touch is working very precisely, even the softest touch input gives output with the touch test app.
Sadly no audio at all is working for me with cm-12.1-20151211-NIGHTLY-ham.zip. No output, no recording... nothing.
But the CM build is more fluid than the cOS build, it feels really smooth.
So now I am stuck with a good device and two buggy ROMs which I both do or can not want to use as daily driver.
Aaaargh!
Reboot the device. The audio issue most likely originates from twrp.

Sir, you were right.
So now I will test this build. Hope there will be a stable soon.
I was not into CM for quite some time now. Heard stuff about battery drain on the ZUK Z1.
I'm not happy with the touch. Sometimes it's oversensitive, most of the time unresponsive first time and occasionally works fine. I'd love a stock Marshmallow rom. This is way too buggy. I've rooted every Nexus and others like the note 1.People laughed at the size of it May give this away at Christmas and stick to my fast, reliable nexus 5 while I save for a 5x.I did want an Asus zenphone 2 but they were sold out ( Bought this for 1 storage 2 battery 3price. Buy cheap buy twice they say.....
With CM (not COS) it is better.
Did notice the touch screen issues but not the screen issues people report yet.
Yes Dude Same Problem With Me But I Have Got A Solution Just now You Have To Increase the Pointer Speed To A 80% And You Can Feel That Smoothness That You Wanted And One More Thing Disable Swift Key Like Apps Too

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Xiaomi Poco F1 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
New member here, my first comment!
Is it just me, or the scrolling is pretty sluggish on Poco f1?
It doesn't lag or freeze but the latency is pretty high. When I scroll up and down fast, finger moves and the icons or the text on the webpage lags behind by 1-2 cm before it catches up the finger position.
Is it normal. I think it wasn't the case with my previous phone, nexus 5.

For sure they have to optimize their firmware/OS as its not even par with OnePlus 5T smoothness yet. Hope to see a solid update for performance and quality soon from Poco developers / Xiaomi Team!

I think that is mostly due to the Animation Scale set to 1x by default. Turn that completely off in developer settings and give it a try.
This might help-
- Go to Settings
- Go to About Phone
- Keep tapping on MIUI version(For Poco) till it gives you developer rights
- Go back to settings main menu
- Scroll to System & Device sub-menu and tap on Additional settings
- Scroll to the end and tap on Developer settings
- Scroll down to Drawing sub-menu and make the following changes
- Set Window animation scale to OFF
- Set Transition animation scale to OFF
- Set Animator duration scale to 1x

Better Solution:
Just Turn off MIUI Optimization (last option) from developer settings ,and all will be buttery smooth

i tried that before but personally to me, disabling transition animations as well gives better results. Try scrolling facebook feed and you see the difference.

Are u talking about some kind of motion blur during scrolling? It could be because of the displays that xiaomi uses but I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere. Their older phones also had this problem and it is noticeable if u came from a more expensive phone or have one side by side to compare it with. Try having the same page on both and scrolling at the same time. For some people it isn't that noticeable and I was wondering if it's also a problem in this newer phone because that would make sense as one of the reasons why it's cheap. It won't affect how fast things load and I don't think it's a software problem. There are some people talking about it if u do a Google search and it happens on different models. Hard to believe xiaomi would do it paired with a snapdragon 845 though. Makes more sense for weaker processors
Turn off MIUI Optimization, Change value from 1 to 0,5 and wait for newer updates to get my Pocophone F1 smoother then
is about hertz ,the touch display
For SD845 device scrolling performance is definitely terrible i don't know if it's software or poor quality of display but scrolling is no where near my 4 year old Nexus 5
Touch response is very poor. When I swipe left it works as swipe up or down. Sometimes swipe down or up and works as swipe left or right. Very disappointed..you can try it.. Just swipe down the notification bar and remove the notifications one by one and see the action.
Sometimes I didn't touch an area of the display, actually my fingers went over these portion of the display and it works as touch click. Very disappointed.
Is it software or hardware(touch display) bug?

We don't know (yet). All I know is no update has fixed it so far. Tbh, I lost hope it's ever gonna be fixed. 50$ phones have better touch response than this "flagship killer killer". Scrolling and swiping is infuriating on Pocophone... Sometimes when I swipe left it goes right. So yeah... I think everyone has this issue but not everyone can notice it. I just don't know why some people say 'update to MIUI 10, it fixed it for me'. Or 'the latest stable update fixes it' when it CLEARLY DOESN'T.

You have a faulty phone
For me, scrolling through things like settings or my Spotify playlist was very smooth and responsive but especially when scrolling through a WhatsApp chat it felt very sluggish (when I swiped down within a chat, let it scroll by itself and then put my finger down to stop at a specific point. The latency between my finger touching the display and the chat stopping scrolling always felt very high).
This improved a little by going from 9.6.14.0 (i think) to 9.6.22.0 and then quite a lot by disabling MIUI Optimizations.
I still keep MIUI Optimizations on since it makes the UI scale better.
I have high hopes that this is a software problem and will be gone at last with the Android Pie, MIUI 10 upgrade.
Well after installing the custom RoMs , touch is stilla pathetic. I don't feel the smoothness which I used to feel in my one plus 5. so does that mean its hardware fault..?

low touch latency on redmi note 7

I wonder do anyone else face this problem?
When i scroll through things, it seem to lag behind a bit. I also tried to compare it with other phones and this phone seem to have a much higher touch latency than the others.
Anyone facing similar issues on this phone?

So far, my Global Version 3 day old RN7 on 10.3.5 doesn't seem to have bad touch latency.
Was nervous about that considering this phone is my first Xiaomi device.
So far so good.
Have you all tried using the old Touch Screen Booster app? Not sure if the apk is still on the Play store.
Try the app if you can. It fixes a lot of touch sensitive issues without root.
Won't make your phones touch response iPhone level smooth but it will fix whatever ailments you're having
I have the RN7 Global and not facing any of the problems people comment about the phone... No lags, no video rec problems, no battery drain, none of all...
My guess: We would face palm us hard if we knew what apps some people install...

Man... Sorry to hear.
Is the app the one that's got the neon green color icon?
If that doesn't work your digitizer could be defective or the update to 10.3.5 could have altered how your touch input functions.
If that's the case, you could also try both touch screen repair and touch screen calibration apps.
Unlike SGS, they're both paid apps in the app store that should help improve your touch response without root.
I used both on my honor 8 and can vouch they improve touch latency response on our phones

I also tried those and they say my original latency is around 47 ms, which is quite okay by this number, but it just doesn't really feel right. Everytime i scroll something, it just seem to lag behind quite a bit unlike other phones. Just tapping on things seems really fine though, no delay for that. And i also went to the store today and tested the demo there. I found out that the demo also have a similar problem. Can i conclude that this problem is not a defect for my phone?

Not sure.
1. Are you also on MIUI ver 10.3.5?
2. Was your touch response ever working fine beforehand and the latest update broke it?
3. What other phones are you comparing the RN7's touch response with?
For me I'll answer:
1. Yes... But I find then touch response the same vs the prior version of MIUI that was on my phone right before it updated to 10.3.5
2. See my response to #1
3. I'm comparing the touch to:
IPhone 6s(which is still the fastest touch response to date), Honor 8 which was great but with the apps above, touch latency/response improved and Galaxy S9+.
I find Redmi Note 7 is slower than our iPhone 6S, close to my Honor 8 with the apps mentioned in the previous post and on par with the S9+ I played with in store.
I found that bizzare since AMOLED screens typically have faster touch response vs IPS/LCD etc.
What are you guys seeing?

redmi note 7 ran smoother while charging.

Anyone facing the same problem? Is it something to do with the battery optimisation?

Yep I have the touch latency problem too, I actually made another post about that
Fortunately, I don't have the touch latency issue. I only heard it emerged for some Chinese users with MIUI 10.3.5.
For people who've had it since they bought it, might be the case of a bad batch of digitizers used by Xiaomi. The phones are under warranty, why not simply send them for repair/replacement?

Mine is the global version, not the Chinese version and I tested the demo in the store and it kinda had like the same problem.
So how bad is the latency? Are you talking about micro lag, or something that effectively prevents normal typing? If I'm really trying to dissect it on my device, I can notice a lag when quickly swiping up and down multiple times without pausing. Or if I open a drawing app and draw lines very quickly. Even then, it is a barely noticeable latency. And I don't have any issues typing. If in your case it's (much) more than what I described, you should definitely replace the phone or have it repaired.

I think you described some of the problems I have, is exactly what you are talking about. Is barely noticible many of the times, but doing some task like reading a book is just kinda annoying, cause I need to kinda scroll more to make it move. Can you maybe do a screen video with the pointer location on your screen so I can see if you're actually having the exact same problem? For the typing issue, is also quite minor but noticible when you're typing really fast.

what's your display model?? redmi note 7 Touch latency issue

Hello everyone. Can you guys maybe help to check what the model of your screen is? Just enter the cit test by clicking kernel version multiple times and click software version, the first option. And under LCM info, there should be the display type.
Want to further investigate the touch latency problem with this information.
Thanks.

I also have 10.3.5 on my phone. Can you maybe do a screen record to show your touch position when scrolling?
I have BOE LCD and no latency issues
I have tianma and touch latency on the edges of the screen.

Wow never saw that. Are you using the global version
Here's mine...touch isn't bad.
Not as fast/instantly responsive as my wife's iPhone 6s of course but don't have the complaints others mention on the forums.
I will say that the paid app touch screen repair has also helped improve the responsiveness a tiny bit.
I have Boe too, global version
global 10.3.10 stable
Mine says shenchao

Hello everyone. Can you guys maybe help to check what the model of your screen is? Just enter the cit test by clicking kernel version multiple times and click software version, the first option. And under LCM info, there should be the display type.
Want to further investigate the touch latency problem with this information.
Thanks.

I also have this touch latency issue. I have the same model as yours. Hope they fix the issue because it can be very annoying sometimes.
I also have that tianma display, but i don't have any kind of display lag.
I have the EU version with Miui 10.3.6.0.
I have the same display too (tianma) but I do not have any problems that I am aware of. If anything changes I will post.
BOE panel for me. Altough it isn't THAT bad, I can see the letters getting slightly thinner when scrolling through text, but also when the display brightness is cranked up to maximum, the notification/quick toggles panel has a really ugly colour to it, like someone would put too much contrast onto it. At night, when I have reading mode enabled & have the slider at maximum, I notice a lot of blurring of text, to the point where it becomes somewhat annoying

That's a software feature, albeit a weird one, of MIUI. I had the same issue with a Tianma panel on MIUI. Switch to a custom ROM if it bothers you.
Hey everyone thanks for sharing your screen model. As of what I saw, the majority of you guys seem to have the tianma screen model, and some of you faced the same problem as I do.
As of one person said, we should try the touch calibration app. However, for me, it didn't work, it showed no signs of improvements in touch latency.
I also recently updated the software version to 10.3.10, but the problem still persisted in this version.
Also, a new problem seem to appear, scrolling through screens now seem to be more laggy than before.
What do you guys think? How is the new version working for you guys?
My formula....take it with a grain of salt...
No root needed...
1. Activate developer options
Use ADB to use custom animations
Set to:
1.23
0.11
0.67
2. Download the paid version of both Touch Screen calibration app and the other one Touch Screen Repair.
Follow both apps instructions...
Reboot after running calibration/repair for each app.
3. If you want to take things further, download (via Google search) the APK SGS Touch Screen booster.
Set your settings to what you see my attachment.
You should absolutely see some difference vs stock touch screen latency performance especially if you do all 3.
Do you have to do all 3, absolutely not. But if you're curious...and have some time to kill research each app, how it works etc and see what happens.
I do no own any of the mentioned apps or benefit financially from recommending people check them out.
Want to make sure I point that out as well.
Will it make your screen feel exactly as a newer model iPhone level response...of course not. BUT it will absolutely improve how your screen responds and feels.

Did another test tonight.
Changed my Window Animation to 0.70 this time. Only other change was SGS Touch Screen app motion filter set to 0.
My touch latency performance improved again and typing is a little more accurate. Getting even closer to our iPhone 6s' screen which is fantastic!
Try these settings out and share your experience
