[GUIDE][Magisk] Install Magisk on Mate 9 Running Oreo (Huawei Treble Devices) - Huawei Mate 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Seeing the different people having issues installing magisk and passing safetynet running Oreo trying to do it using TWRP, I've decided to post this guide to help simplify the process for some and allow magisk to install and pass safetynet successfully.
Latest Magisk Manager and magisk work now so no longer need to setup and flash the specific version found in the original post from topjhnwu.
Original credits and thanks go out to topjohnwu and his original guide found at: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ho...agisk-root-honor-view-10-mate-10-pro-t3749280
Prerequirements
Must be running Andriod Oreo
Unlocked Bootloader
Copy of your Update.app
Huawei Update Extractor (download in attachments) to extract and get your ramdisk.img
Instructions
***Recommed to use via fastboot method...
If your device does have TWRP support with decryption, just directly flash it via TWRP. For devices without TWRP yet (currently all Huawei Treble devices), you can follow the instructions below:
Install latest Magisk Manager from the Official Thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Follow the instructions of "Install Via Magisk Manager" in the main thread, but instead of providing the boot image (which these devices do NOT have), provide the stock ramdisk.img extracted from your Update.app using Huawei Update Extractor.
If you are using Mate 9 with model MHA-L29636 running on firmware ending in B362, you can download the stock ramdisk.img I extracted from official OTAs in the attachments
If you have stock ramdisk images for other devices, please share them and I'll add them to the OP.
Pull the patched image with adb pull /sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img, and flash the patched ramdisk via fastboot:
fastboot flash ramdisk patched_boot.img
Reboot and you shall have a properly rooted device passing SafetyNet, start playing with some Magisk modules!

Reserved

This method is working good.... Have been using it since.....!

Yeah, I did not notice any changes either with mine so not sure if there is something we missed then. Maybe we have to remove the camera app first before installing it. I don't know for sure

This was totally bugging me too but after a whole day of trying I've finally managed it.
1) Go to this thread here
2) Boot into fastboot and flash the boot.img and system.img as suggested in the thread
3) Also flash the original recovery using "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
4) Go to the official asus support site here and download the update files you need, the last two
5) Download Version V11.41.87.2 and place the file in the internal storage of your sd card, once you pull the cable out your phone the phone should detect a update file and ask if you want to install it. Click OK.
6) The phone will unpack the update and reboot and install it
7) Delete this update file and then add the latest Nougat update file (Version V20.31.49.2)
8) Do the same again and install it and there you have it... the key is that you have to install each incremental update rather than go straight to the latest.
Oh and I don't know if it makes any difference, but I decided to turn off adb debugging once I'd flashed the various boot, system and recovery images before I started to update using the Asus method.
Also I have successfully re-flashed TWRP through fastboot on Nougat.
Hope this helps.
worked for me perfectly

Thanks for the instructions; worked for me. Were you able to re-root? I tried to by following this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/zenfone/comments/6gqha5/zenfone_3_ze553kl_z01hd_root/
But on step 8 of the supersu website, my phone gets stuck on "starting adb sideload feature." I had already tried installing supersu via twrp, but still no root.

Magisk has a few modules for it but nothing like Xposed.
I'm going to do a full back up and then see how well ZenUI plays with Substratum as most of the ZenUI Themes are pretty poor and I want an all black theme. I'll let people know how it goes if anyone is interested in using substratum.

Oh, if you're having trouble getting TWRP to stick don't reboot the system but reboot back into Recovery, by holding the Vol - & Power together and using the Volume buttons to select Recovery.
After this you can then reboot normally.

You updated to Oreo, correct. Of course you did.
The update.zip has inside (extract it) update.app. use heawei update extractor to extract that file. You will get the system.img there. That one will be the correct one for your model and build number.
If yo I updated from regular ota, you may not have this zip file
If this the case you. Will need to download it. From pro-teammt.ru
Link if you need it.

Downgrading to Nougat is not recommended, because EMUI 8 is Treble supported.
That means it has dozens of new partitions and partition lengths. Many people have screwed their phone trying to downgrade.
Unless you have foolproof method of downgrading and correct 'downgrade firmware' (yes, it's different, cause it will re-write all the partitions again), Don't do it.

I have a similar problem and I cannot get back to stock from the RR oero
I used the method to upgrade from 5.1 to oero 8.0 here https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-7x/how-to/guide-honor-7x-flash-oreo-update-t3781649/
Then used the Openkirin RR install method using stock recovery. - all goin good but RR has to many crashes.
I have tried to roll back to Stock using the same HWOTA method putting the update files int HWOTA 8 folder, all looks good in twrp and I wipe Cache and Dalvik but it still reboots into RR
I've noticed in Twrp in red letters it says cannot find partition /system
Rebooting into recovery after using to install TWRP it first boots into stock recovery then when i press factory reset it will boot into TWRP.

No Need of TWRP for ROOT.
Just flash latest MAGISK Manager. Open and it will ask to install zip, choose patched boot image option. It will store patched boot img on your device. Pull that out and flash it through fastboot... fastboot flash ramdisk patched_boot.img.
That's it.

Hi and thanks for reply:
I've tried to do what you ask me, but it won't work...
I've patched the TWRP with this method and it won't work (root checker say "no root")
Maybe I must use only original boot.img from the stock firmware?! I ask you, because I can't find the firmware B598 via FF and other sources...
Hi, solved. Procedure is correct, but in Oreo isn't "boot.img" but "ramdisk.img". Thanks for the help!
Could we make the instructions a bit clearer? From where should I get the boot image (ramdisk)? and is it something I need to fish before magisk?
(PS. Can I still receive OTA updates afterwards?)

EDIT: Confirmed that the issue is on your end. Patched the image myself and flashed it, with Magisk being detected by Magisk Manager.

If you updated to the Indian/Global 11.0.1.2 before doing this, you only have 2 options:
1. Wait for the next OOS update, but when the Indian/Global update comes, don't update.
Instead, wait for the full update zip of the EU to be available, and then follow the steps in the previous comment.
2. Unlock bootloader, flash the full OTA zip of any variant via fastboot, and relock the bootloader.

Unless OnePlus is very different from the other major manufactures, you definitely do not want to use a patched boot image from a different model variation of software/firmware. At best it will cause major issues.. At worst, it will brick it.
If Oneplus is different, I would love some feedback on why and what they do from other users.

Correctish, you don't want to flash it. You can just boot the image. If successful it'll just boot the phone. If unsuccessful it will hang and you can just force reboot. No damage can because because it's not writing the boot image to the phones storage. Kinda like booting from a flash drive. The code is
Code:
fastboot boot /path/boot.img
If you boot a patched boot image you will have access to a rooted phone until you reboot. I.E. just enough time to flash magisk on the installed boot image.
Hope that makes sense.

I am familiar with how it works but with brands like HTC and Samsung, if we use a boot.img from a different variation, it will not work or even brick it. Thanks for the heads up! It sounds like there is more room for error for testing with OnePlus and modifying the system.
Can someone please provide a link to the Magisk Manager that 's working with this bootimage?
Edit: Found it, got root but it doesn't pass SafetyNet...

Which one was it? My Magisk is not working either. I assumed it was because the kb2005 was only an incremental update. I have the canary version from github. Is there another for oneplus?

Yeah, same one. And it worked on the incremental Ota for kb2005?
Do you mind posting the patched boot.img?
Thank you!

Don't know for KB2005, mine is KB2003.
I used stock boot.img from OP and patched it myself, all already patched files didn't work.

11.0.8.8 Rooting Issue

I am on the latest 11.0.8.8 EU version. I had patched the boot.img using magisk 23 app, but when i try to flash the patched boot.img using adb fastboot, keep getting "com.android.phone" crashes. Need to flash stock boot.img to get the sim cards working. Any suggestion to get root ?
Remove oos native call recorder module if you have it, if not just remove all modules.

Have you been on my guide mate?? It's all laid out for you..
Don't flash anything, you want to boot first as this is not permanent.
Stable 23 is the correct version..

I am on the stable 23 version. Disabling the native OOS call recording module solved the issue. @gsser Thanks mate.

Ah yes, always disable Magisk modules prior to upgrading firmware.
As they may not be compatible, this is also in the guide.
Glad you're up and running mate

Hi, see this thread:
[OnePlus 8 Pro][ROM][OTA][Oxygen OS] Repo of Oxygen OS Builds
As OnePlus doesn't always provide download links for all of their OxygenOS ROMs & OTA update zips, we've created an index to put the links in one post so that they're easy to find. Note: This is not a support thread for issues you may have with...

Yep I've got guides for unlocking the bootloader and rooting in the guides sections.
Both called as such accordingly.
Tbh there are a few guides all should be fine.
Just read through the root guide.
Unlocking the bootloader it's easy.
Code: fastboot OEM unlock
Agree on phone.
Rooting:
Obtain patched image
Fastboot boot Magisk patched
Don't flash it, just wait for boot then open Magisk and click install / direct install.
Again this is all in the guides.
