[Q] We need to find a way to fix the battery drain(OREO) - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello, since Oreo update the most of the s8 users facing battery drain.. personally mine needs 2 times to charge it on the day.. I am using messenger, Instagram, Facebook.. I know these apps are Killers for the battery but on nougat didn't face that problem. Also I have greenify to freeze the most of the apps, titanium backup.. a custom kernel with a Governor that promising battery life, but it has a lot of lag.. also the gps etc are off ! Let's find a way to fix that problem .. I don't know when or if Sammy will release update to fix it.

Atleast I didnt faced battery drain and easily get day of usage, sometimes 2 days. And yes, i'm using a lot of facebook, messenger, browsing internet, using camera and everything seems ok for me

What modifications have you done on your phone ?

I usually charge my phone twice a day since nexus 5, anyway you can use the lite version of messenger, skype and for the rare use apps.
For Facebook I personally unistall the app, but a good way to fix it is by downloading "Facebook less crap" (search on xda) then using RomToolBox pro and disabling all facebook startup, and the final touch greenify.
Same for the other apps: (google them)
fb messenger -> Messenger less crap
Instagram -> OGmods Instangram+
Whatsapp -> OGmods OGWhatsapp
Youtube -> OGYoutube or Youtube app + xposed modules
Telegram -> Plus messenger (My favorite to admin all channels)
and so on....
You can do the same with RomToolBox pro and grenify to take full control

On what version of Oreo are you? Since CRC7 Battery is very good for me. Maybe it's even better than on Nougat before. Using Light ROM with NX-Kernel.

I found this version here on XDA, because every official Oreo rom I was trying to install through Odin I I was getting error after flashing shoot.. it's a error with CRAP rooms something like that I read.. I found a thread here to fix it with zip tool to unzip the rom and delete something from it but I got another error. I was trying for like 5 hours.. and I found this ROM I have now.. also on a telegram group I found the AEL kernel free and I install it, I am using Synapse app to configure the governor etc.. which governor do you suggest me for the best battery life ? I was using blu_active and one more I don't remember it's name but I got a lot of lag..

You're on the very 1st oreo version firmware which Samsung pulled because of issues, you need to update to latest which is like CRC7 I believe, newer versions have very good battery life.

Okay, firstly are you rooted and have twrp installed? If so then just flash one of the many roms available, most of them are now based on newest available firmware, and install a kernel like noxx or one of the others.

This one is probably best for you: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/samsung-galaxy-s8--s8-cross-device-development/g95xf-fd-n-oreo-beta-2-soldier9312-zqk4-t3703183
Install everything optional in the aroma installer, so you wont have problems afterwards. Also you don not have to mess around with the kernel.
Hope you like it

I forgot to mention that I have the App "SD maid pro" for clean the device every 7 days at 2:30 am and then rebooting itself, so you start your week with a fresh and clean device. You can also automate most of the task by using "tasker" app.
Recently I create a profile to set "GPS on High accuracy" when apps like Google maps or "Maps.me" are open and change to "GPS on Battery saving" when leaving those apps.
Another tweak to save battery is create in tasker a profile with the csc of your mobile company (in my case CNT) and near to my house are 4 antennas of this company to set the WiFi On when connected to those antennas or wait 5 min to Turn Off the Wifi when those antennas are not available anymore. You can add more Antennas from your workplace, parents, gf, bf, ggs, and common visited places to never have to worry about the WiFi and saving battery, because you are already connected to those antennas so Tasker use almost no battery.
As I mention to you, even with those and another tweaks I have to charge my s8+ twice a day, but at least not 3 times a day xD
You are welcome, if you need something else just let me know, most of the info is already available on XDA, which ones to use is the deal, so chose wisely my friend....
PD: Try not to bootloop your phone in the process xD

So that's custom ROM with TW ui Right?

Correct, it has touchwiz (Samsung experience) ui

Fully stock here. No greenify/custom placebo crap and I'm getting 6h+ of screen on time every day with a mixture of LTE and WiFi. And I also use all the usual suspects (Facebook, fb messenger etc). Sometimes less is more, stop installing a million crap applications to "save battery", they're probably doing you a lot more harm than good. Battery on stock Oreo is just fine.
Normal s8 btw, not the s8+.

Battery drain - source found

I have had problems with battery drain on my S2 from the day I bought it. The battery would last apprx 12-14 hours before going dead - almost without use.
I then removed an Exchange (ActiveSync) mail account. And the problem was gone. 30+ hours battery with no problems. I added the mail account back, and the problem reoccured. I testet this some more times and it was consistent each time. BTW I was not using push, just manual mail update.
The mail account that I am adding forces encryption on the phone, so it might be that this is the actual source of the battery drain. But it shows that the phone is useless using ActiveSync with encryption.
I was hoping that this was fixed in 2.3.4, but the problem was the same there as well. Until this is fixed (which I don't suspect will happen) I can not use the phone with my job email account because of this.
Yes you can go to themes and apps section and search for the administration removed email app, stock app with the corporate control removed try it and see if that works better, currently using it myself and no big battery drains.

Using 'Push' uses a lot of battery. See if you can manage with 'Manual' or scheduled to check every few minutes.
Also disable 'Auto-sync' if not required.

As I said in my initial post - I do not use push - I have everything on manual. It drains battery even if I do not check the mail once.

You can unroot upon return just use a insecure kernel which will bypass superuser I think.

I also pinned down my huge battery drain (10% per hour) to the Exchange email connection I use. I have tried various stock ROMs and some custom ones, but all seem to give the same result. I must say that older ROMs did not seem to have the drain this much. I am currently running Cognition 1.5.1.
Currently I work around the drain by manually syncing my email whenever I want to read email and this results in a whole lot less battery consumption (I now have 50-70% battery left with moderate use, instead of only barely managing 8 hours or so.
I have installed the modified Email.apk to see if this fixes some issues. The email.apk in Cognition did not have a .odex file anymore and was a few bytes different in size, so I really really hope that this fixes the drain. I'll keep you posted.

Would someone please be so kind to link the thread with the modified apk? Forum search through tapatalk is not always an easy task

You can try the stock asop one from dark knight thread, think check fixed the wakelock issues, very similar to the Samsung version minus a number of features but based on the same source.

With kind regards,

My test results with the email.apk I had found did not really show improvement of battery usage, so I am very curious for the link that nikzDHD means. Is this the one patpeewee mentions? I did not see any remarks about wake lock issues in the op.

[Q] Facebook/Linked in... APK or WEB?

Hi all,
So here is my question...
I've been having horrible battery drain and have not yet put my finger on what is causing it.
I'm thinking it could be facebook/linkedin/other apps on my phone.
Is there any reason to install the APK version when a mobile web version exists?
I see the web version being a good choice as it won't be an app installed but rather just visiting a web page.
Any thoughts?
get better battery stats and that should let you see whats causing the drain....or look in settings>battery and see whats running there as well. the apk is there for convieniance and thats about it. the constant updates and radios being on will kill your battery cause the phone is consistently looking for new information. its really all user preference but to me bookmarking the site is just as simple as having the app. you just may not get the update that your friend you dont talk to is eating a taco and taco bell as fast.

It appears greenofy does a lot of what autostarts does. I use autostarts for all apps and disable most everything (for instance facebook with an app is installed/uninstalled etc).
Having said that, after wiping my phone yesterday and doing a fresh install of TriForce 3.1 with Agat 5.1 I've noticied a significant INCREASE in up time.
I only installed a few normal google apps. Linkedin/Facebook I'm using the web version. I got 21 hours out of my S4 with 2 hours of screen on.
When I have my phone configured "normal" i've got close to 90 apps installed.
I'm going to run a "bone stock" from for a few more days to see how the battery life is (i know you have to give the kernal a few days to burn in).
I just wish my phone could last a lot longer before dying.
try ktoonz kernel.......they have alot of preset kernel settings to help you get the most out of your battery and still maintain performance in the ktoonz store. i normally run 1 day+ with around 3 hrs 45mins screen time......and my screen time is usually gaming (psp emulation)and tweaking differant settings or downloading movies music etc.... so its pretty heavy usage...

[Q] is this normal battery life for note 3?

My note 3 is about 2 weeks old and i really think that the battery is so bad, it is already rooted with grinify and still it never last for a whole day even with minimal usage
Im reading a lot of things and i think the only solution is installing a custom kernel like lean kernel
Any feedback will be appriciated
now this
Now i have this qcamera draining my battery from time to time and according to forums it is cause by skype and camera apps which is weird because i don't have skype and i rarely take pictures,
Can someone help me?
You can return to factory settings, put power save on, and try it, my battery last for about two days with wifi on but location is always off.....

Custom kernels will not help you much.
Your problem is the large number of apps running in background and waking-up the phone - use Titanium Backup Pro or App Quarantine Free to freeze stuff, for instance you have no reason to have both Facebook Messenger and Facebook App running at the same time. Freeze anything that you don't use very often, and greenify everything else that is not a messenger (greenify those too if you have Pro and the Xposed module installed).
Look also into xposed modules and wakelock terminator - for instance a lot of power is lost to Play Store and Google Play Services with NlpWajeLock - look around to learn more details about that.

ExistenZ Marshmallow problems and solutions

Our beloved developer @niaboc79 is getting very tired of people always asking the same questions and posting their problems in the development topic of his rom.
So I decided to make this topic in the "general" section of the forum where people can post about their problems and hopefully some solutions, in the hopes that it will help him and the people having problems at the same time.
Whenever a cause or a solution for a problem is found, I will put it in the second post, right underneath this one.
I want to make clear that I'm not an expert and cannot help much myself, I will just collect and centralize information, and I'm in no way affiliated with @niaboc79 and his work, and do absolutely not deserve any credits for his work.
Also there is no guarantee that the information I collect and post in the second post will be a solution for your problem even if it has apparently worked for other people with similar symptoms.
I invite everyone that uses his rom to share helpful information here. (please)
Firstly ; a copy of the FAQ that @niaboc79 posted himself. You should read it before asking questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How to flash the DRM fix and avoid loosing of recovery
A:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67111204&postcount=1169
Q: Hey, that thing doesn't work!
A: Check if there isn't an (*) at the right of setting description, that means that you must restart SystemUI.
If it is not the case, try to enable/disable option a few time and reboot or read thread to find an answer.
Q: Why is there greyed options in eXistenZ settings!
A: These otions aren't available yet.
Q: Weather isn't working on lockscreen or in expanded status bar...
A: Go in settings/eXistenZ/Notification Panel/Weather Settings;

Recovery access problems:
-Don't update busybox
-Don't update Kernel
-Don't flash DRM fix (see FAQ)
If you haven't done one of the above, you should be able to enter recovery by pressing volume down (repeatedly) while starting up the phone.
If you did do one of the above, simply reflash the rom.
Note: since version 4.7 (or alternatively version 3.9) lag is no longer appearing in the rom. If you do witness lag on 4.7 (3.9) there is probably something that you have done that is causing it. Check and double check your apps and settings before trying other solutions in that case!
Lag problems:
-Update to rom version 4.7 (or 3.9 for the rom based on the beta firmware)
-Follow the instructions posted here on rom version prior to 4.7 (3.9)
If you still witness lag after that:
-After installing, give the rom some time to settle, it has to index all your files and the memory management still has to find out what apps (you) are running. This takes a long time (depending on your usage) so give it some days.
-Some xposed modules and Greenify are known causes. Disable that if you use them and see if the lag still persists. If it is gone, you can find the exact module/setting that is the cause by disabling just one module/setting at a time and try if the lag has gone. (this also counts for other problems by the way)
-Stamina mode makes the phone slower as it lowers processor speed etc. Turn it off and check if the lag has gone.
-Many (also popular) apps use quite a lot of system ressources even if you aren't using them. You could uninstall your apps, then reinstall them one at a time, use the phone a bit to check if the lag came back, if not install the next app, and so on until you find the app that is making your phone lag/behave weird.
-Never restore a titanium backup (or similar) when coming from a lollipop rom. There are several differences between lollipop and marshmallow so you risk to restore incompatible stuff.
-Activating blur in recents causes lag (v 3.5, should be solved with the next update of the rom) Fixed in final version
Profile picture (top right of status bar) won't remain after reboot:
-Open the contacts app and go to the first contact (that should contain info about you, and no image) and choose the picture you would like to see in stead of the blue user icon (click on the pencil and then on the image)
Now the image for the user switch in the status bar has been changed too, and it will stick after reboot.
Switch user causes a crash of the beta feedback app and doesn't work
-Remove beta feedback app
You can now switch users, although the system will crash/reboot, it does switch. (will be fixed in a future release of the rom) Fixed in final version
Reserved for later use

By just looking at that image, not really.
I see that you haven't used your phone much during the time of the picture, so no apps are using battery, nor your screen. That automatically makes the operating system the most consuming thing, as it is needed to keep the phone running.

Click on the app to see what is consuming (radio, processing.... ) if it is the radio, maybe you had very bad connection. If it's the process that prevents the processor going to sleep you should try to find out what is running all the time.

My Zuk Z2 Pro experience

Hi all!
I recently received my Z2 Pro (128gb) from Coolicool the other day and I though I would let you know of my experience.
It came with the 'international firmware' on it preventing the use of OTA and Uhealth so like many others I proceeded to flash it with stock Chinese firmware.
Following this guide - ahh...as a new user it seems I can't yet post links. But I would like to thank m_atze for his time in writing it!
METHOD 2!!
At first I kept getting saraha errors but moving the firmware to a short folder on my laptops main drive solved this error (ie. c:\\zuk\.....)
Flashing went ahead without a single problem
Changed the language to english and proceeded to uninstall chinese apps and install the ones I wanted.
There was then the latest OTA which didn't require a VPN
Other than there being a few mis-translations the phone seems very fast and stable (I am coming from a Galaxy S4)
A day of standard use from me left me with over 50% battery compared to the <10% I would have from the i9505
Overall very happy with my purchase and looking forward to an official full english android 7 firmware release!
I do seem to be having issues with push notifications and widget updates. I'm sure that will be fixed soon enough.

kinda works better now. Chrome seems to force close after opening, only once though and then it works fine.
