[Q] Facebook/Linked in... APK or WEB? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi all,
So here is my question...
I've been having horrible battery drain and have not yet put my finger on what is causing it.
I'm thinking it could be facebook/linkedin/other apps on my phone.
Is there any reason to install the APK version when a mobile web version exists?
I see the web version being a good choice as it won't be an app installed but rather just visiting a web page.
Any thoughts?

get better battery stats and that should let you see whats causing the drain....or look in settings>battery and see whats running there as well. the apk is there for convieniance and thats about it. the constant updates and radios being on will kill your battery cause the phone is consistently looking for new information. its really all user preference but to me bookmarking the site is just as simple as having the app. you just may not get the update that your friend you dont talk to is eating a taco and taco bell as fast.

Use greenofy donate version to freeze them with keeping notifications.

It appears greenofy does a lot of what autostarts does. I use autostarts for all apps and disable most everything (for instance facebook with an app is installed/uninstalled etc).
Having said that, after wiping my phone yesterday and doing a fresh install of TriForce 3.1 with Agat 5.1 I've noticied a significant INCREASE in up time.
I only installed a few normal google apps. Linkedin/Facebook I'm using the web version. I got 21 hours out of my S4 with 2 hours of screen on.
When I have my phone configured "normal" i've got close to 90 apps installed.
I'm going to run a "bone stock" from for a few more days to see how the battery life is (i know you have to give the kernal a few days to burn in).
I just wish my phone could last a lot longer before dying.

try ktoonz kernel.......they have alot of preset kernel settings to help you get the most out of your battery and still maintain performance in the ktoonz store. i normally run 1 day+ with around 3 hrs 45mins screen time......and my screen time is usually gaming (psp emulation)and tweaking differant settings or downloading movies music etc.... so its pretty heavy usage...

[Q] Does the Facebook App Drain Your Battery?

I've been getting great battery life but then recently noticed that I hit 50% by lunch (when usually, I hit 50% by 10-11pm, after unplugging in the morning like everyone else).
Then, I noticed that FB was showing me notifications after installing it a few days ago. I tried to find a way to disable notifications in FB, but there is no such option, so is it basically running all the time in the background? Makes ya wonder what Zuckerberg is tracking in the background?
I'm uninstalling FB tonight and see if I can get back the awesome 1.5-2 day battery life I'm used to.
It does drain battery terribly but I don't think its because of notifications. I think the chat refusing to close is causing a partial wake issue. Download spare parts and Facebook is always running. Probably best to just use the site.
I never have any problems with the facebook app. You can disable notifications in the settings.
I cant really speak to the chat problem. I have been signed out of chat since that feature was added.
So if you are having issues, try disabling notifications and signing out of chat. See if that makes any difference.

Cool, I'll put FB back on after a few days and try those suggestions. I wanna make sure that it was the culprit in my poor battery life.
I just left a comment for them about this in the Market. I'm also going to install it back again and uninstall it from the Market and mark it as Defective, so they get a second hint.

It's for sure the chat....just make sure you stay signed out of it and you wont have the drain issues.
I dropped the FB sync settings down to once or twice a day and that was a huge help on battery life. I don't use the widget, so instant status updates have no value to me and this allows the profile pics to stay relatively up to date.
I noticed the widget causing the most battery drain.
I think i will stick to the site.
New version of the Facebook app just came out. Version 1.5.1 if i recall. Might help those of you having battery drain issues.

Same here. I think it's because I enabled the Facebook Sync feature or I have too many media xD
Ya, kinda' laggy.
The gallery is crap.
Use this:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&feature=search_result
It's amazing.
Gallery is fine.
The reason it takes ages to load FOR YOU is because you are using task killers that unload it from memory.
Each time you load it up, it has to fully load again, rather than instantaneously popping up.

I have to agree here. I read the "task killers are bad" article and initially dismissed it as "no way" but since getting my Play I have not cleared all my tasks and it definitely runs perfectly fine and seemingly faster than my other Android devices that I religiously killed tasks on.
That said I still run ATK for when I actually have to kill a task, ex:a program is stuck and won't even FC, or my email acts up occasionally and won't retrieve. I find killing the email app and then opening it again cures it.

I use this aswell. Only complaint is that it says QuickPic at the top. Annoys me xD and the camera icon needs to be bigger.
I've found if I don't force close Gallery, its process will become a huge battery drain and my Play won't last a full day. That said, I do prefer it over Quick Pic, as it does run faster (for me).

Nope. Open processes do not drain the battery.
When you are not using them, the Android o/s freezes the process which eliminates processing power and battery power.
The only time an open process will drain your battery is if you are using a custom rom that doesnt support process freezing.

Problem is, when you go to battery usage when this problem occurs, Gallery does appear as taking up anywhere from 25-35% of the battery life.
Only a phone restart or force close of the app fixes the issue.
It doesn't happen too often anymore.

I have had my phone on this charge for 11h 28m and 46 seconds. My battery level is at 51%.
I have used the gallery today to show my work friends a couple of photos and a video. (about 30 seconds worth).
Gallery battery usage reports at 0.0%.
Something is wrong with your set up. The gallery works fine on my phone and doesnt drain the battery at all.
I suggest you are either using a custom rom that doesn process freeze the gallery, or you have an app killer that is killing the gallery.
I cant think of anything else it could be.
Hope you fix it anyway. GL
My phone takes a bit to load pictures too. I find that the droid in general needs a better way of shutting down unused programs. Too often do i need to restart my phone to get it working at top notch again.
i used quick pic and its fine now

My battery sucks lately. It may be since the last xloud update.
I can't get through a day just on standby. If I make a call or two it is dead before I get off work.
I use the task killer all the time and almost never use the gallery and don't use facebook. I do you Go launcher but it wasn't bad before the update.
Don't use the task killer. Install some scripts and custom Init. d scripts. Best way to conserve battery is to install juice defender ultimate
Saves battery 2x.
Lowring battery voltage also helps

Last update had a bug which drains the battery.
There is a fix thread on the forums somewhere that explains why it is bugged.
You need to go to settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks, network operators, then select manual instead of automatic.
The bug is basically that when you leave it on automatic, it will constantaly scan for radio signals whether you have a signal or not.
Took me a while to find out what it was, then someone else found a proper fix for it.
Can you tell me which forun and the thread title with those bugs?
Thanks for the Tip.

Massively improved battery life on stock 4.1.2

I've had fantastic results since I updated to 4.1.2.
I've done a fair bit of tweaking to get the results, but it's worth the effort.
Here's my advice.
Factory reset first. (Vital)
Turn off Google Now
Turn off Google location updating and history in Google maps
Disable all Samsung Apps you don't use. (This will be a massive list of useless apps and services)
Use a mostly black wallpaper
That's it.
Below in the screenshots are the results of this tweaking.
Please keep in mind, I've been reading books on my phone with moon+ reader. I use a white text on black background and mainly at night so low brightness. Hence the crazy long screen on time.
However I still sent numerous txts, browsed, used gmail, streamed music etc etc...and had two days of standby.
Screen on auto brightness, standard battery.
Insane. This is by far the best battery life I've ever had from an Android device...and I've had many going back to the G1.
I'd thoroughly recommended trying the tips.
Have a search around and you'll find a full page with all the Samsung apps you can disable...there are a hell of a lot of them.
Give it a go.

My experience is similar, as I've done the same. I'd say that stock 4.1.2 (LL5) is about as close to perfect as it can be.
Which 4.1.2 rom are you using? I can only get a maximum of 6 hours screen time on my stock ELKC rom
and this is also on stock kernel?
LL5 with stock kernel and a full wipe. Lots of Samsung bloat frozen and removed.
More details please:
-Rom???
-2G or 3G???
-Wifi all time???
-Power saver mode on???

I use stock ROM odexed. I have sync off most of the time and I sync manually about once an hour or maybe once every two hours, depending on my schedule. Never use power saver, and I keep data toggled off when I don't need it, and I use Wifi in my office (and data only when out) so I think that helps. I don't run any widgets other than the stock calendar widget, and gnotes (and Google search, but I have Now turned off), no live wallpapers, Facebook or any of that crap. Just a dark (stars) wallpaper. I can get huge amount of time out of my battery that way, even with a good amount of screen time. I have around 80 apps installed, but keep the system running lean. I don't use any task managers or memory killers, and I rarely reboot. Maybe once every 3-4 days.

On 4.1.1, with Perseus kernel, auto sync and mobile data on all the time, I get even better battery life. Which is why I'm reluctant to update and start over, as the phone more operates perfectly for me.
There is a list of safe to remove apps in the Themes & Apps sections, it's a sticky thread even.

Just wanted to add that on ELL4 I'm suddenly getting fantastic battery life - I was having loads of random reboot problems (many times an hour at one point, unusable), then it all went away for some reason after lots of fiddling, and since then I'm on 27 hours without a charge, and still 35% left - that's with everything turned on still, no change in my usage; wifi all the time, Google Now, loads of accounts syncing including Latitude location, email syncing every 15 mins, some music and browsing usage, etc
Before, I'd get around 16 hours of this normal usage before the battery was getting ready for a charge. Weird, but I'm not complaining!
Well with ELL4 everythink stock rooted with enyxos abuse, and frozen samsung apps, i can barely get 6 hours screen on ..
I text friends, and use whatsapp over Data network(2g) (no wifi) and SYNC is off
Will i get 9h screen on with ELL5 ?
Edit : And yes i wiped cache / data before flash ELL4 via Odin
I still hold the record XD

Custom kernels will not help you much.
Your problem is the large number of apps running in background and waking-up the phone - use Titanium Backup Pro or App Quarantine Free to freeze stuff, for instance you have no reason to have both Facebook Messenger and Facebook App running at the same time. Freeze anything that you don't use very often, and greenify everything else that is not a messenger (greenify those too if you have Pro and the Xposed module installed).
Look also into xposed modules and wakelock terminator - for instance a lot of power is lost to Play Store and Google Play Services with NlpWajeLock - look around to learn more details about that.

[Q] We need to find a way to fix the battery drain(OREO)

Hello, since Oreo update the most of the s8 users facing battery drain.. personally mine needs 2 times to charge it on the day.. I am using messenger, Instagram, Facebook.. I know these apps are Killers for the battery but on nougat didn't face that problem. Also I have greenify to freeze the most of the apps, titanium backup.. a custom kernel with a Governor that promising battery life, but it has a lot of lag.. also the gps etc are off ! Let's find a way to fix that problem .. I don't know when or if Sammy will release update to fix it.

What modifications have you done on your phone ?
I usually charge my phone twice a day since nexus 5, anyway you can use the lite version of messenger, skype and for the rare use apps.
For Facebook I personally unistall the app, but a good way to fix it is by downloading "Facebook less crap" (search on xda) then using RomToolBox pro and disabling all facebook startup, and the final touch greenify.
Same for the other apps: (google them)
fb messenger -> Messenger less crap
Instagram -> OGmods Instangram+
Whatsapp -> OGmods OGWhatsapp
Youtube -> OGYoutube or Youtube app + xposed modules
Telegram -> Plus messenger (My favorite to admin all channels)
and so on....
You can do the same with RomToolBox pro and grenify to take full control
On what version of Oreo are you? Since CRC7 Battery is very good for me. Maybe it's even better than on Nougat before. Using Light ROM with NX-Kernel.

I forgot to mention that I have the App "SD maid pro" for clean the device every 7 days at 2:30 am and then rebooting itself, so you start your week with a fresh and clean device. You can also automate most of the task by using "tasker" app.
Recently I create a profile to set "GPS on High accuracy" when apps like Google maps or "Maps.me" are open and change to "GPS on Battery saving" when leaving those apps.
Another tweak to save battery is create in tasker a profile with the csc of your mobile company (in my case CNT) and near to my house are 4 antennas of this company to set the WiFi On when connected to those antennas or wait 5 min to Turn Off the Wifi when those antennas are not available anymore. You can add more Antennas from your workplace, parents, gf, bf, ggs, and common visited places to never have to worry about the WiFi and saving battery, because you are already connected to those antennas so Tasker use almost no battery.
As I mention to you, even with those and another tweaks I have to charge my s8+ twice a day, but at least not 3 times a day xD
You are welcome, if you need something else just let me know, most of the info is already available on XDA, which ones to use is the deal, so chose wisely my friend....
PD: Try not to bootloop your phone in the process xD

So that's custom ROM with TW ui Right?
Correct, it has touchwiz (Samsung experience) ui
Fully stock here. No greenify/custom placebo crap and I'm getting 6h+ of screen on time every day with a mixture of LTE and WiFi. And I also use all the usual suspects (Facebook, fb messenger etc). Sometimes less is more, stop installing a million crap applications to "save battery", they're probably doing you a lot more harm than good. Battery on stock Oreo is just fine.
Normal s8 btw, not the s8+.
