[Help] New to the Custom Roms world - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I’m very new to the custom roms world (I’ve just got an S4 I9505 see specs below) and i would gladly appreciate your advices. Feel free to share any advice.
I am starring at the Kitkat Google Play Edition JFLTE-GPE by Danvdh (last update 28/01/2018).
Could you advice me 3 very battery friendly roms ?
Maybe Official Lineage OS 14.1 (nightly 7.1.2) as you told me stylemessiah ; JDCteam Optimized Lineage OS 13 (stable 6.0.1) ; ... ? I read also about MIUI.
Many thanks for your help.
ps: I’m French (sorry for my bad english) using the “Free Mobile” Carrier which needs XEF CSC (i mean i prefer english language rather than french, but i need to use the “Free Mobile” Carrier).
Thanks to PhoneInfo :

-Hardware Revision : MP 0.900
I’m on windows 7 using the latest 1.5.51.0 samsung drivers, Odin v3.13.1, TWRP jfltexx 3.1.1-0
Edit 2: Thank you stylemessiah for your feedback. So for the Bootloader and Modem, i'm already ready to go. Nice
-According to zetcamp (thank you) I don't need to upgrade or downgrade my current I9505XXUHPK2 Bootloader and I9505XXUHPK2 baseband for this rom.
Which are the latest bootloader and modem for my XEF i9505: I9505XXUPQG1 ?

Edit 1: Thank you audit13 for your feedback. I have successfully flashed TWRP twrp-3.1.1-0-jfltexx.img.tar with Odin v3.13.1. Then i have backuped my stock rom (EFS partition included), just in case
I would like first to do a full backup of my phone (included the EFS partition which stores the IMEI numbers and data)
Could please you tell me :
-Which is the latest TWRP version compatible with my current I9505XUHPK2 bootloader and I9505XUHPK2 baseband ? is the 3.2.1-0 ok ?
https://eu.dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/
-Which Odin version should i use to flash this TWRP ? Is the lastest one v3.13.1 compatible ?

TWRP is not dependent on the bootloader version. I recommend always running the phone with the latest bootloader and modem and I believe PK2 is the latest.
You can use Odin version 3.07 or newer to flash TWRP.
A battery-friendly ROM is going to be stock. There may be others but I stuck with a de-bloated stock ROM for my s4.

Ive tried GPE ROM's in the past (maybe not that exact one, it was ages ago) and found issues, though they may have been fixed by now...
Personally these days i wouldn't go less than a Nougat (Android 7) ROM (not sure why youre wanting to downgrade to KitKat - much better fucntionality and app choices in your current ROM, and better again in later ROM's), at very least the stock official LineageOS 14.1 (updated nightly) on an S4, so much better than any stock ROM, no bloat for a start. Though going with a stock ROM, if its rooted you can remove the bloat at least.....
The latest modem&bootloader is technically XXUHQC1, though i have tested it for months, i eventually went back to XXUHPK2, so i would stick with that...
Note: You can always choose to upgrade/downgrade the modem&bootloader independently of the ROM (im using PK2 with Oreo (Android 8.1), the best source, in case you ever feel like trying an alternate, they are here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/ref-galaxy-s4-i9505-modems-bootloaders-t3315987 Worth sticking in your bookmarks
Note 2: They often hide some previous versions under the Click To Show Content buttons....

Hi Stylemessiah.
Ok, so for the modem and the bootloader i'm already ready to go. Nice

I was hoping that because KitKat is lightweight, With 2GB of RAM it could be responsive and with a good battery life. I know that kitkat is kind of security updates outdated...
I would like to use Opera Mini, Waze, and during hiking the GPS and the Camera (no video recording). But my main usage will be 2G idle during day, and airplane mode during night. Few sms, no calls (and no games by the way, so performance or costumization doesn't matter for me).
In the old times, with my S1 i9000 i could last 6days+ with a single charge (without using much the phone indeed ...)
Thanks

[Q] Want to upgrade to 5.0.1 officially.

Hello,
I bought Note 4 (Model: SM-N910F) in Germany, and now running android version
4.4.4, I want to upgrade to the official version 5.0.1 from website:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N910F/
Which version is recommended from the website?
Debating between both versions: Germany or Unknown, Which version is preferable?
And do need root to flash a new version?
I am interested in a clean system with no additives/applications (in English) with good battery time.
Thanks,
idan.

You don't need root to flash a new firmware.
I would recommend wiping the phone to factory status before you flash a new firmware.
N910F will use the BOC3 software.
This should work okay.
/N910FXXU1BOC3_N910FVFG1BOC2_VDC/
Yes of course, I will implement to make a factory reset before flash new firmware.
BOC3 = Unknown version.
I understand this rom from Dutch, It will be ok? or wait to OTA upgrade?
After upgrade system to 5.0.1, my device will receive OTA?

I upgraded a few days ago from N910FXXU1ANK4 ATO 4.4.4 to N910FXXU1BOC3 Unknown and I can say that it's working nicely. Had issues when updating as I was first trying to flash a BOC3 version from RO Vodafone, but had issues while flashing (Volume size too big, Odin invalid ext4 image). I was able to upgrade to N910FXXU1BOC3 Unknown without any issues.
In case you get into trouble while upgrading, you can do a emergency re-initialization from Kies3, based on your model number and serial number (on device, under the battery).
If you are flashing a different region ROM, make sure you do not have Reactivation lock as it will block your attempt to flash a new ROM.
@lolozaur thanks about information.
Version N910FXXU1BOC3 (5.0.1) will include touchwiz interface?
I prefer a clean system like nexus version, can you recommend a convenient interface (launcher)?

Don't have much information regarding the Note 4 ROM community as i just got the device one week ago.
But, if you want to keep your Knox counter set to 0 and have your warranty available, you have to flash only stock ROMs from good sources (i prefer sammobile).
I personally like the new Touchwiz on 5.0.1 and I think it will keep getting better when we'll get the S6 Touchwiz in future updates. I would not flash an AOSP ROM on the Note 4.
Not sure about this but if you want an AOSP OS (nexus version) you will be losing some of the functionality of the Note 4, such as the S-Pen and S-Note integration and maybe the S-Health and Heartrate sensor.
@lolozaur
Flash of new version 5.0.1 can lock again device for locked region?
The lock was released by call (5 minutes) with local microsim.
Thanks.

It should not lock. My device is also used outside the unlock region and I did not have any troubles after the upgrade.
I am flashing 5.0.1 and looks good! even touchwiz interface looks clean.
Thank you for your kind assistance.

Galaxy S5 SCL23 (SM-G900J)

Hello.
I just recently got Galaxy S5 which appears to be only sold in Japan. There's some custom firmware installed on it which prevents Android to be updated. Phone doesn't have SIM locked, so any SIM card can be used.
Because the forum doesn't allow me to post link to a screenshot which shows firmware info I'll just write it down.

I'd like to completely wipe this firmware from the device, replace it with the latest Android version (6.0?) and root it. At first I'd like to know if it's even possible to do any kind of firmware changes on this model and what exactly do I need to perform the update/root.
Thanks.
Doesn't look like there is a 6.0 stock ROM for it, but you can upgrade to 5.0 here
http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?r=&v=&q=SCL23
Flash with ODIN (Instructions all over the forum many times)
Okay, instructions on updato seems quite easy to follow so that shouldnt be a problem. Is there any recommended tool for root? I've found a lot of them and I really don't want to mess something up.
PS: How come there's no stock ROM for 6.0 even tho it's been mentioned in some articles that SCL23 model is also supported by Marshmallow update?
Anyone?
Okay, update to 5.0 passed without any issues. There are some default japanese applications on the phone which I cannot uninstall, is it possible to get rid of those somehow?
I have the same device Do you update succeeded or not
I installed Android 6.0.1 and the network was missing help someone Galaxy scl23 or give the firmware 4.4.2 or help to find the GSM network

Go to this link & download 4.4.2 then follow this tutorial.
Make sure to use key input from the options & use capital letters where needed. All being well you will have everything working again.
Make sure not to use any download manager for the download link. File gets about 100kbps so it'll take a few hours but you will get it.
I did the above then rooted the phone & flashed correct TWRP version to it then flashed 5.0 Lollipop SpaceX rom here. Everything working good & no loss of service on reset or reboot.
Hope it helps

Installing stock ROM on SM-G532F

So guys I have flashed TWRP on my Grand Prime Plus through Odin. And now I need to find a stock ROM for my phone.
My question is:
Does the base version (and build version as well) of the ROM you're downloading need to be same to what it used to be before??
This here are some specifications of my phone right now:
Android Version
6.0.1

Can someone tell me if the base version and the Build Number needs to be same for downloading a new ROM or not??
And where can I find the best ROM for my phone??
Edit: And does the region of the ROM you're about to download needs to be the same as the region you're living at? Does it make any different?
Also, how do I make a backup for the already installed OS? What do MUST make backup of out of:
Boot
Recovery
EFS
Cache
System
Data
Misc
Modem
System Image
I don't really care about losing data, I just don't want to lose my previous already installed OS while trying to flash a new stock ROM. So what do I make backup of out of the aforementioned?
Thanks.
Where is stock frimware link?

No wipes necessary after flashing.
Flash with twrp.
I used latest official twrp and RedWolf Twrp for testing
No difference in basband version shown in system so don't get confused. In system you will always see the same baseband version. This is normal even if there are changes made between the versions according to changelogs of ZUI updates. There are even more changes in RadioModem (WiFi, Bluetoooth etc.). But changelogs from ZUK are not really detailled
-------------------------------
TroubleShooting:
Problem: After reboot your phone requires your usual pin on lock screen. But even when typing correct pin it will switch back to lock screen.
Solution: Reboot to twrp.
In twrp start file explorer (find it under advanced)
In folder data/system delete all files beginning with "locksetting". Usually one to three files.
Reboot. After reboot no pin is necessary, you need to re-setup again.
Problem: I get no LTE / 4G signal anymore. HELP!
Solution: Thanks to @vickdu31 and @juyer there is the following mini guide:
- Download 3.5 latest baseband from this post
- flash it with twrp.
- Extract .zip of baseband
- Reboot to fastboot
fastboot -i 0x2b4c flash modem NON-HLOS.bin (this file is from .zip baseband)
fastboot -i 0x2b4c erase modemst1
fastboot -i 0x2b4c erase modemst2
fastboot -i 0x2b4c reboot
LTE working instantly.

Enjoy mates
So can this Radio Modem / Basebands inprove 4G signal to get a better performacne?
It can help you if you experience problems with connections like wifi, 4G or bluetooth.
And it can help you installing custom roms.
Most of the Android 7.1.2 based custom roms need a baseband of ZUI 2.5.xxx and upwards.
CustomRoms based on Android 6.0.1 need a baseband of ZUI 2.3.xxx
And finally with that basebands we all can participate on the improvements ZUK did.
thanks i was just looking for that , my 3.1.194 modem is giving me issues i'll try the 2.3.044 ,
thanks again
Hi,
how do i update my baseband Version using twrp?
I was trying to Flash lineage OS 14, but ended up with the "perma blue LED crash" while connecting to Wifi.
Is there a guide how to update baseband on ZUK Z2 Pro?
download the baseband zip. Flash it with twrp. Easy.

read mate, READ!
updated 1st post with baseband of 3.5.204 DEV version.
And added full version of 2.5.462.
Thanks @crisps
i have clean installed lineage 14.1 after wiping system cache data and dalvik cache, do i have to flash the latest basebands?will i notice any difference?
you dont have to
Usually basebands are flashed if there is an existing problem for you which may be solved by flashing a baseband.
Android 7 based CustomRoms usually need a baseband from ZUI 2.5 upwards.
Android 6 based CustomRoms usually need a baseband from ZUI 2.3
Some reported that baseband of 3.1 made connection reaction of phones faster. I dont know if it is a psychological thing. For me it feels faster as well.
So in conclusion: If you dont experience problems you dont need to flash baseband.
If your Rom is crashing with black screen and blue led flashing baseband of 3.1 may solve that.
Hope I could help you
Merry Christmas!

So I'm a little confused. You're saying that flashing the 'new' baseband won't change the baseband version number in the about screen, but it will make changes 'under the hood'? Did they forget to change the version numbers with the baseband updates?

I don't know the reason of ZUK not to change the baseband version number. They're Chinese
But according to ZUKs own changelogs there are changes
Especially Wifi and Bluetooth issues are handled as well as some 4G issues.
You can use the basebands or not. It's up to you. If you don't experience problems you dont need to flash.
Is it possible to go back to an earlier version by reflashing it?

i need some help/suggestions on updating LOS my S5 klte

hi, i have a s5 (klte) SM-G900M the device is from the carrier claro from the Dominican Republic (LatinoAmerica) and im running LOS on the Nov 8 (2017) Build and i haven't updated the OS since then, i have been experiencing some random reboots when using open camera and other occasions, and i want to update the device to the latest build, but i have been told that the new s5 builds require the latest baseband ,back when i installed lineage os , my phone was on lolipop and i installed LOS on the phone without updating to Marshmellow (my bad :l), im running this baseband version: G900MUBU1BOE2 (wich was released in 2015), i have tried to find the "latest" version of the baseband but that seems to be the latest one for my particular device (the Dominican Republic S5) was released in 2015 , and i don't know if istalling another more update version of the baseband of other country, will introduce problems with the carriers from my country (The Dominican republic) , i have a backup of the stock touchwiz rom , but apparently i can't install the OTA because i have TWRP 3.1.1 installed and since it replaced the stock recovery, the OTA is no longer possible to install, i would greatly appreacite any help regarding this situation :/

I couldn't find firmware for Dominican Republic but it looks like Ecuador shares the same firmware as you so try the below
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G900M/EBE/download/G900MUBS1CQD5/166984/
Or this one from Columbia
https://samsung-firmware.org/download/Galaxy__S5__/58l3/COB/G900MUBS1CQD5/G900MCOB1CPI1/
Place in AP section of odin
Once flashed go into recovery mode and perform a data wipe/factory reset
Also update your twrp version if you want to flash later custom roms
thanks!!
i have a few more questions:
1-)wich version of TWRP do you recomend for lineage 15.1? i heard some people having problems with the latest version
2-) if one day i want to revert to stock how do i aproach this? since my backup is from lolipop , and i dont think that the new firmware will play nice with that (in case i plan to sell the device or something)
3-) do you now if the latest magisk version works well with lineage 15.1?

So you want to update your Baseband Modem to the latest version before updating your LineageOS Firmware to 15.1.
The following link has the latest one for your device that's provided by haggertk. haggertk is one of the Official Lineage Team members.
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=746010030569966172
Download the file on your PC, place your device in Download Mode (aka Odin Mode), then connect your device to your PC via USB Cable, Open Odin and place the downloaded file in your AP (or PDA) spot in Odin (nothing further) and start the flashing process.
It's fairly quick to accomplish, you won't loose anything on your device and, afterwards, you should be good to go for Updating to the LineageOS 15.1.
Just an FYI... The following is the Official LineageOS 15.1 thread that's specific to the klte devices for support and guidance.

I wish you the best of luck and enjoy LineageOS 15.1!

1 - latest version of twrp - nothing wrong with it
2 - just flash stock firmware via odin
3 - latest version of magisk works fine with lineageos 15.1

This is a tricky question. The issues experienced are not all for the same variant. For example, some of the issues are for G900F but, my G900V hasn't experienced any issues.
Just keep in mind that if you experience any issues, you can always Downgrade it without a problem.

Reverting to stock is not difficult because you just need the Stock Firmware and, possibly, the pit file (that's also available on the SamMobile forum and androidfilehost as well).
