Galaxy Tab A 10.1 32 GB 2016 or 17 or 18?? - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

Hi All,
Terribly confused - am looking to try Android again after years of being iOS, want to get mid range tab, so the 10.1 A looks about right.
But....Whats with all the 2016, 2017, 2018 after the model numbers? Does it matter, is there any difference?
I am looking at a 32GB Black 2016 10.1 Galaxy Tab A, its showing as the 2016 version, will that be ok?
This is terribly confusing :-/
Cheers!

No diff tbh i have 1 and its brill...

Samsung hasn't updated the Tab A tablets since about 2015, and it shows. Ancient slow CPU. Only 16GB storage. Models other than 10.1 do not even have FHD resolution. You might as well buy Amazon Fire HD/HD 10, at least they're cheap.

Oh I didn't know that Samsung has finally increased the internal storage from 16GB to 32GB. That's basically the only improvement since around mid-2015. However, these tablets still come with ancient A53 CPUs built on 28nm process and no FHD screens except for the 10.1 model (2016), but which strangely does not have stereo speakers in landscape mode. I guess we all must enjoy watching a widescreen video when sound is firing from just one side. It basically remains very low end hardware. I don't know what's Samsung thinking.

Tablets don't usually have the same high end specs that phones have. And most people are just browsing the internet/facebook/instagram/etc. They really don't need the top end soc's. Especially when you compare a ~$200 tablet with a phone that is ~$800+. People don't understand how much the display costs.

But there is a still serious problem with the progression of the "Tab A" series. Even low-end smartphones for 200USD can have decent specs and performance. I recently picked up an Honor 6X smartphone (under 200USD, at Best Buy), and it has 1080p screen, good camera, and CPU that's built on 16nm process, resulting in great battery life and good performance. The new version, Honor 7X, has even slightly better specs and the same price. On the other hand, The Tab A tablets cost 200USD or more, but most them have only HD (720p screens) and CPU built on ancient 28nm process. Almost no updates to spec since 2015.
If anyone hasn't checked, these days Amazon sells tablets with such specs for under 100 bucks. Such tablets are so mundane that Amazon offers four and six-pack boxes of them. An Amazon tablet with 1080p screen and much better CPU costs about 150USD tops (Fire HD 10). Amazon's software is allegedly crap, but you can install a Google Playstore on it and use it like any android tablet.
My main question is, where is the Samsung Tab A2, A3? Isn't it about time Samsung offers a cheap tablet with modern specs? The astonishing thing is that Apple's iPad 2017 model has MSRP of 320-something, and is often on sale under 300 bucks. There is a rumor that Apple will introduce a 260 dollar iPad this year. And what's going to be Samsung's answer to it? The same Tab A from 2015?

OK, we get it....You don't like Samsung tablets. You also just spent the entire first paragraph comparing the tablet to a smartphone. It's still a good solid tablet that will suffice for the majority of tablet owners and will outlive many times over some of those throw away 100 buck tablets.

It seems like you need to read my previous post again. I have made a comparison to competing tablets. The comparison to smartphones came as an answer to a guy who seemed to imply that I complain that a 200 dollar Tab A tablet is not as good as an 800 dollar smartphone. Well, in response to him, I gave him an example of a 200 dollar smartphone that slaughters ALL Tab A tablets that exist today (well, except the screen size).
It's still a good solid tablet that will suffice for the majority of tablet owners and will outlive many times over some of those throw away 100 buck tablets.

It's like saying that 2010 iPhone 4 is still great and will serve its owners for many years more. Now, I don't know what qualifies for the definition of a "throw away" tablet, but from your words I guess you think that if a tablet costs 100 bucks it must be throw away? Ok. But how does it make you feel that the Samsung Tab A tablets have specs of a 80USD throwaway Amazon tablet? I mean seriously, you would throw away a cheap Amazon tablet, but you wouldn't throw away a Samsung Tab A tablet even though it has the same hardware specs but costs about two to three times more?
If you would like to see a fair comparison to tablets, how about Lenovo Tab 4 Plus 8/10? 1080p screen, CPU built on a modern process. Price is about the same. Lenovo gives you a 2016-2018 technology. Samsung is selling you a 2014 spec tablet for a ridiculous price. I don't really know why ANYONE today would buy Samsung Tab A when something like Lenovo Tab 4 (same price, but much better specs), Amazon Fire (same specs, but much cheaper), or Huawei Mediapad M3 exist. Hell, like I have ALREADY mentioned before, even Apple's 2017 iPad slaughters the Samsung Tab A tablets.
I think the main question now is, will Samsung eventually update the Tab A series, or will it just sell off the remaining stock and then cancel the brand? I mean seriously, does this question not linger in anyone's mind? The damn thing hasn't been updated, except cosmetically, since about 2015. My conclusion is that Samsung will abandon this line and will only continue with the more expensive Tab S line.

Ive been thinking of buying a Tab A, or any other mid range 10 inch tablet, ive seen this https://www.xda-developers.com/list-unannounced-2018-samsung-galaxy-devices/ gta2xl – Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2018 has this been released, or is it still to come?
If it has then im guessing there are better tablets to spend my £230 on??

Not sure what the thesis of your post is other than you do absolutely not like the Tab A series
Here's a comparison of the tablets you mentioned: _https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8090&idPhone2=8872&idPhone3=8605
The Amazon Fire at 170 EUR is locked down by Amazon, head over to https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/orig-development to feel the pain yourself.
The Lenovo Tab 2 Plus clocks in at EUR 50 more than the Tab A 2016.
That makes the Tab A 2016 still the best value/money tablet with broad dev support in 2018, like it or not.
You will be shocked to learn that there are folks running the latest 2018 software on 2013 hardware and it's completely sufficient for their use cases.

Hi.
As an owner of Amazon Kindle Fire, and after reading Akopps's initial reply to this thread, I felt obligated to point out the glaringly obvious - it would be ridiculously foolish to buy an Amazon tablet as an alternative to a Samsung tablet - you cannot install Google Play Store, therefore you cannot install many apps without circumventing Amazon's setup.
A strange comment from a "Senior" forum member ?#!*??

Considering Galaxy Tab

I own an HTC Desire HD but I've been after some form of tablet since before Apple walked in with the iPad. Looking around there's no real choice yet but that's going to change in the next few months. Question is, is the Galaxy Tab with getting now or would you (current owners) wait if you were in my position?
Learning to really love the tab, but with the announcements right around the corner I would wait.
Who knows when they will be available, but at least you can then make an informed decision. Only a couple weeks away to see whats coming.
If tabs are going to wait for honeycomb and if the rumors are true that honeycomb wont be available until may or june, then I would say get it now. 6 months is a long time to wait.
With that said wait for the announcements to find out for sure.
I'd only get the Galaxy Tab if I specifically wanted a 7" form factor. If you're more interested in a 10" tablet, wait for Honeycomb.
Note that it is unlikely that the 10"ers will have a higher resolution.
Galaxy Tab or wait
I think difficult time to make a decision like this, wait or not. My experience with Samsung Galaxy Tab is not bad but I also have an iPad and I prefer iPad for photos, videos and internet access when I am at home, SGT is nice to carry when travel but worst quality screen, worst speed drawing screen, etc. SGT have more flexibility with OS upgrades (XDA Forum), memory card, telephone calls, telecom Data Plans, but overall worst than Apple. SGT is very expensive too.
I don't recommend you to get actual SGT in comparison to iPad or coming tabs from Samsung and many other providers will offer HD video in 10" or less??
cocoe68
Thanks for your opinions guys and / or girls! I was leaning toward waiting already but then I saw the Galaxy Tab had dropped in price and it made me wonder. £399 for the 32GB version is a lot better than when it launched.
Looking on the Engadget site a few minutes ago there's already news from CES of quite a few better tablets to come. The wait for Android 3.0 is holding things back but I think I'll wait.

SGT does HD in 7" now
Playing HD videos and displaying HD video are two different things. The SGT is 1024 X 600. HD starts at 1280 X 720.
That said, 720p mkv files look amazing on the SGT. In my mind, the ability to display colors better is more important than actual vertical resolution. 600p is nothing to sneeze at.
Just buy one - you wont be sorry.

I'll second this. If you want a tablet, go get one and don't worry about what may or may not happen weeks or months from now. I bought one a few days ago and it's been my constant companion since bringing it home. That's actually more than I can say for the iPad because it was so much bigger and heavier that it rarely left the house. The Galaxy Tab fits in a pocket of most of my pants, it's light, it's fast, it plays Flash video like a champ...you absolutely won't be sorry.

Do you have any reason to believe the 10" devices will have better res? Netbooks have been hot for a while now, and all but the super expensive have been locked at ~1024x600or768 in the 10 screens.
I think it is tough to get a higher rez at this size.

It has nothing to do with that - it's to do with licensing of MS Windows, and getting decent prices on Intel Atom processors. Essentially, neither MS nor Intel wanted to cannibalize sales of their higher end OSs and processors, so introduced artificial restrictions on the specs of netbooks.

You got a source for that?
How many 1920x1080 10" or 7" devices have you seen?
I say wait for honeycomb. If then you don't find others that you like better than get the tab. The tab is really great however waiting might pay off.

Imagine the pixel density of a 7" screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 or even 1280x720! I am sure they *can* do it but I doubt anyone would want to pay that much for it.
Exactly! The resolution of these devices is not going to change (much, if at all).
Right now I do not think they even CAN do it, as I can find No devices of any type with such a screen. The smallest is the dell XPS at 13.3" (1980x1080) and HP mini note 9" 1280x800, and those are HIGH END devices.
EDIT: I can find displays, but no actual devices.
After seeing all the announcements so far from CES with Honeycomb tablets and 1280x800 resolution on 10.1" displays plus Tegra 2 chips I'm pretty sure that I'll be holding out. As good as the Galaxy Tab looks and might perform I have to wonder if Samsung will bother releasing Honeycomb for it or treating it as an early adopter product that is shelved or sold alongside newer, higher spec systems without future updates.
With that said the size and portability of the Tab would be very tempting at a lower price point, around £200, but I doubt it'll ever go that low.
There were two announcements at CES that caught attention:
Dell Streak 7, a Dell Streak with a 7' screen.
Motorola Xoom 10' with Honeycombe which looks fantastic but no definate release date.
There was also a Lenovo LePad 7'.
The Motorola Xoom really caught my eye too. I hate myself for saying it but even after the shambles of the update process for the Motorola Milestone the Xoom impressed me so much that I could see myself getting one. I'm still very tempted by the Galaxy Tab but I think I'd be setting myself up for a big loss if Samsung drag their heels on a Honeycomb release like their FroYo updates. Given that they likely have new hardware to release as well it gives them even less incentive to update it.

What does that have to do with anything? We're talking about existing netbooks - I see absolutely no point having that sort of resolution on a 7" or 10" device *regardless* of price.
Best I've seen (and had!) was 1600x768 on a 8" Vaio P, and that was over 2 years ago. However, it really was too small for that resolution. One of the reasons that it was more expensive was because it did not fit into either MS or Intels definition of netbook and therefore, had was not permitted to use low cost Windows (Vista at that time), and the Z-series Atoms over the N series.

Elocity A10 available for pre-order January 17 starting at ~$450

So I was wondering if anyone was thinking about purchasing the new A10 that'll be available for pre-order January 17? I was watching a few videos on youtube featuring the A10 at CES and it looks amazing. The screen resolution of 1366x768 is what is swaying me to want to purchase it. I have to say, after owning the Viewsonic G-Tab, I'm not thrilled about lugging around a 10.1" inch device, but the A10 is tempting.
I really like the A7 but the lack of true multitouch is starting to bother me (not to mention the low screen resolution- after playing the Galaxy tab at a Verizon store, I definitely saw what I was missing out on). I do love the portability of a 7 inch device but after going through all of the 7 inch devices showcased at CES not a single one has the three things I'm looking for in a device (Tegra 2 chipset, high screen resolution, and an HDMI-out port).
It seems as though the next gen of A7s will have these three features, but they won't be available until sometime in March, if that (I can't wait that long!)
So question is, is it better to just keep the A7 and wait until March? Or suck it up and return the A7 and preorder the A10?
I am planning on keeping my A7, and then ebay-ing it when someone better comes out.. I got mine for $299.. I figure that I could probably get around $200 in return (considering it will be up-to-date, with market enabled and all the trimmings).. I am taking very good care of it so it will be in a brand-new state...

I'm leaning toward returning the A7. I love the size and speed... weight and screen are just OK... but the lack of USB-computer connection, unreliable or non-working multitouch, broken Flash, and an inconsistent WiFi is what's making rethink this tablet.
I had the GTab and Archos 10 inch units, which I also returned for different reasons, and I find 7 inches to be the best option. I do wish they made an 8 inch tablet, though...
I'll wait a little longer before I buy another tablet.
I'll echo on the 8" comment, it would still fit in large pockets.
I would only consider 10" tablets as light as the Archos, and it has crippled hardware IMO.
So after much deliberation, I've decided to return the A7 (just finished packing it up today for the UPS guy to come pick it up). It was a really tough decision since I realllllllly love this thing, but I didn't realize how much of a multitouch user I was (in both the apps I use and in the browser) and it was really hard getting used to not having that. I had just fallen in love with Angry Birds when I got the Viewsonic GTab and while I'm glad it finally worked on the A7, its impossible to play when you can't zoom out to see where you're aiming the birds!
The crippled USB port, the bulky form factor and the lower res screen were also deciding factors for me as well. I've decided, instead of getting the A10 (since I just cannot walk around with a 10" device), that I will get the Samsung Galaxy Tab to hold me over until the new line of A7s come out in March.
I'm sure the development on the A7 will only grow until then so it'll be great to come back to that. In the meantime, as I did with the Gtab devs, I will be more than happy to donate to A7 devs for their awesome work (especially Dexter!).

I got to play with the A10 at CES 2011. I should have the video up tonight on my website. I was excited about eLocity's enthusiasm over their upcoming devices. They look to be well made devices with a price point for almost anyone. The new A7's and A10's will have several different models available with the difference mainly just being the size of internal storage on the devices. The A10 will top out at 256GB and cost $999, with the first model being 4GB and costing $449. All will be Tegra 2 devices and have true multi-touch as well as the highest resolution then on any other upcoming tablet.
Should have the video up tonight...

Looks like a nice looking devie with solid specs. I believe the battery life is still 5 hours, and that's no where as good my g tablet.
The real question is will it fun most market apps without issues. Seem mot of these tablet (from small company's or rebrands) have great specs but have issues running many apps. THey require fixes and XDA support, even then they arn't 100% fixed. Hope that changes with time.

I dont think the A10 will be 10 hours life. The Chief Engineer had told me that that the battery life on the A7 was due to the battery they used and size issues. I would figure that shouldn't be an issue for the 10 inch units.
I would hope 5 hours isn't the case, as almost every 10 inch tablet out or coming out promises 8-12 hours..
As far as the issues, I think this has to do more with the fact that the Tegra 2 was new. The Viewsonic G-Tablet and eLocity A7 a long with a few others were the first to have Tegra 2 tablets to the market. Next few months almost EVERY tablet coming out will have it.. so look for there to less issues. Some of the other issues are just smaller companies going through some growing pains..

Well, those specs sheets are all messed up, because it says the device is only 8 inches... those are mostly the specs of the A7 if you look and not the A10. I have the press kit, and that battery life listing is only for the A7. I am not saying for sure, but just saying those spec listings are for the A7 devices since it lists the wrong size and weight of the devices..

I'd probably treat this with the same skepticism as the NIA - I'd prefer to wait until reviews come in before I decide anything (this is good anyway since I'm not buying anything for at least a month). An IPS screen would definitely put this a step up from the GTablet, assuming the other specs are similar.
I was lucky with the GTablet, but it was also less risky since it was a B&M store with a return policy.

I do think they have learned from the release of the A7. StreamTV Networks Inc. has several tablets coming out in the eLocity line, plus phone/tablets in 3 and 5 inch sizes, plus 3D Televisions and picture frames.. They have a lot going on... and the eLocity A7 was their debut product.. I think the A10's will be a competitive line.

Galaxy Tab 7.7 on the way

Saw this yesterday. Looks like the 7.7 appears to be on the way.
For those of you like me who have recently picked up the 7.0 plus... What are your thoughts on this? I am happy with my 7+ but the 7.7 is what I was originally waiting for.

Like you I was strongly attracted to the 7.7 when I was in the market to buy. At that time, no word when/if we'd get it here. And imports were $600 and up. Bought the Gt 7+ and have not looked back since.
Gotta say yes, the larger screen (not by much ), AMOLED quality (very nice) and slightly faster processor makes a very attractive package.
But....
Our community here is growing (not light speed but still), we have root and CWM (thanks gary9d), more than a few recognized devs are following here and there are a selection of cases/sleeves with more on the way.
Who is to say the aftermarket accessories manufacturers will embrace SO MANY different "flavors" of GTab (7.0, 7.0+, 7.7, 8.9, 10.1 and perhaps an 11.0?) I'm doubtful myself.
Keep thinking...."a bird in hand is worth two in the bush"
Most likely I am staying with my GTab 7+. But YMMV

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but there are quite a few more upgrades on the 7.7 over the 7.0 Plus. Bigger battery (5100mAh vs 4000mAh), thinner, lighter, 64GB option, and as you mentioned better display all around - Super AMOLED Plus, higher resolution at 1280 x 800, and larger at 7.7 inches. The only sacrifice really is that it's ever so slightly taller and wider in dimensions, and probably will cost a bit more. I wouldn't underestimate the number of people holding out for the 7.7, I think the dev community will be strong, and I suspect it will have support for CyanogenMod 9.
Although as with all electronics something better will always be just around the corner, as rumors are swirling of a Galaxy Tab 8.3 in the works (Super AMOLED Plus, quad core 1.5GHz, Ice Cream Sandwich), so if you decide to stick with the 7.0 Plus no one is stopping you from enjoying it to the fullest!

You're right, thanks! I forgot about the battery.
Quite right that there's always "something better" just around the corner. If one were to wait for the next best thing, one would never get anything I suspect. As long as whatever you gets does what you want, it's all good.
It's can be a crap-shoot on community support. Samsung devices have the reputation for quality hence usually a good following. That said, I believe that people who gravitate to forums like this tend to be more tech-centric than the majority of tab users. I do wonder though as I read several articles (trades and users) praising the 7+ but somewhat negative mentions about the price. I am curious just how high Android tabs will be able to fetch. Granted, it's my belief that even the $499 iPad is over priced by at least $100 but I wonder if the $400 price point might be the "sweet spot" for full-featured tabs regardless of size? I'm not a "gamer" so my power needs are modest.
This is my first Samsung tab and I am impressed. But so many screen size choices? Price and not so much screen size/features, I suspect, will drive many sales. Witness B&N and Amazon. I confess I am sure I'll be comparing at BB the 7.7 and other screens when it hits!
Isnt the 7.7 going to be starting at $600? The upgrades look good but im not sure if its an extra $200 good.
The 7.0+ is already a damn good tablet.

Well we still don't know what the official prices are going to be, the sites that are offering pre-orders are pretty much just making up their own prices. I have heard however the official price in Australia will be $579 for the 16GB and $649 for the 32GB, and that's in AUD. Looking at the iPad 2 prices in AUD they are almost identical, and we don't know if these prices are for the WiFi or 3G/4G model, but I would suspect the 7.7 will be between $450-500 for the 16GB WiFi model in the US.
Can't wait to see it and compare it with my 7+. Size is my main concern, 7.7 is quite long and wider. If a device is too big, I cant really bring it out whenever I like. Not So useful and convenient like 7 inch tablet too. I once had a larger tablet and I almost left it everyday at my home, sold it at last. Anyway, 7.7 is worth waiting.

Hi. Im new to this part of xda. And this is somewhat bothersome news as I just bought my plus today. First tablet in some time that made me think wow. I have an ipad now. Owned the Transformer and Dell Streak 5 and 7. I was going to wait until spring.g to see the new XOOM, ipad3, and TF Prime but decided after seeing this I thought this could last awhile before going down in price.

I'm keeping my plus...
I don't think the upgrades from the 7.7 are worth it.
It will be really disappointing if we never get any good roms... But I'm mostly happy with root as it is.
Anyone who wants to sell The Galaxy Tab 7.7 can write me an PM! But I want it this year in Germany I would Pay 1000 Euros Cash!!!
I am very attracted to the 7.7 personally. Have an 8.9 that I'm planning on selling very soon. (Tegra 2 just plain sucks compared to Exynos frankly), and though it's a nice form factor, it's not for me. No phone calling ability is a big downer too; I like being able to swap my SIM card between my original Tab and phone depending on the situation.
Have the Note too, but not sure if I will keep it or not. Waiting to see what ICS will be like on it. Could be amazing, or could just be "meh." If it's not that much better, may sell my Note too and just stick to an SGS2/7.7 combo.
Then again, CES is right around the corner, so maybe it may be worth waiting longer still depending on what else may be coming out for 2012!
But oh that 7.7 sure looks nice... Damn, I'm such a consumer whore
My main reason for buying the 7+ is because it's quite versatile. I don't want to be lugging around a phone, tablet and laptop with me along with their respective accessories and chargers all day so I opted to buy the 7+. This means I can use my ultraportable for serious computing (negating the need to carry the charger), and the tablet for all my communication needs plus some light gaming, reading or browsing.
So it doesn't have the largest battery, or the best resolution, or the latest and greatest processor; but, it's got a large enough screen to comfortably read eBooks, browse the interwebs, and pretty much everything else. It's got decent enough performance (better than decent, actually) to handle all the apps I want + sd card expansion. And most importantly (for me), it doubles as a phone.
I know I look silly when I take calls on it, but I'm okay with that. Like the famous philosopher Jagger once said 'you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you get what you need'.
I love the 8.9 and initially wanted to get that, but in the end telephone capabilities and sd card expansion won out over a larger, more gorgeous screen.

Do you have a non wifi version? I got my 7+ yesterday and cant find a dialer on it
I am pickinmg my 7.7 wifi up tomorrow from **** Smith in Australia - can't wait, been wanting a tablet for ages. I had originally ordered a Transformer Prime until Amazon canceled the order. But this is the tablet I really wanted.
I don't know. I mean, I was planing to get the 7+ near the end of this month. I know that the screen and whatnot is better or the 7.7, but I seriously don't know if I would like the better screen or use the maybe bit more charge from it having a bigger battery to spend $200 more then what I was planing on spending.
I'm afraid that 7.7 might still have the Black stains/blotches on the screen, just like in S II. When viewing on dark room.
So no specific release date or price? If its not much more in price than the 7 plus and coming out fairly soon id like to return mine and wait for the 7.7

Thats what I am hoping for. But the specs say only 100gs heavier, same thickness. Mine is mostly for school and work, so it would make more sense to have a more productive device(s-pen is the reason we all love this tablet, isnt it?)

It also depends on what your weighting of various features are. Obviously running native MS Office and Outlook is a huge benefit as is SharePoint access and OneNote. At the end of the day it's still a Windows PC which, unless things change dramatically, aren't very good consumption devices. I replaced my HTPC with Google TV's for the simplicity and broader content support. If you use your tablet for consumption in the 30% and below range W8 is probably a better choice. I'm probably about 60% consumption 40% productivity and am fine with Android for now. And it's not like you have to buy a W8 Pro device on the day they come out or lose the opportunity. Having suffered through V1 of plenty of h/w and s/w there's something to be said for letting others go first. And here’s hoping that with the introduction of a Windows-based version of S-Note that Samsung comes up with a way of sharing what’s created with Android S-Note with Windows-PC’s.

People use common sense. If it is going to have an Intel CPU, a larger HD screen and pen input it is going to cost MUCH more. Those components aren't free.
If a tablet had the same components as a $1000 ultrabook and includes pen input it is going to cost what an ultrabook costs. It won't be $500.

Well, I was peeking too, BUT I have to see it, feel it, touch it before I would consider a FULL Win8 Tab (NOT RT-version which does not have any benefit over Android).
It has to endure easily 12 hours like my N10.1 and has to perfom in the same smoothness and reliability.
I am an "early adopter" but with Win8 I have to read a lot of reports and see a lot of hardware tests before it convince me to buy a Win8-slate.
It is so much at the beginning, will be full of bugs and promises of added functionality in the FUTURE that I will wait for the official "Surface"-Tab and then compare to the Win8-Sammy-Tab and then maybe in one year decide upon a Win8-Tablet when "Surface 2" will be issued.
Yes, I love my Note i-717 and 10.1. i will be waiting for the livestreams that stat in 2.5 hrs for the Note 2.
I did use my note 10.1 in class yday9marketing) and the professor mention apple and he made me show the whole class the note and I explain how the patent messed up our S-Memo! I did copy the part of the sylabus where it states to write your preferend name, occupation and picture, then took one with my FFC and sent it to him during class. So yes I love it.
The car analogy is a good one. I have an 04 Q45 premium(had an 03 as well, RIP) and it still holds it own vs alot of newer cars. Do i sometimes desire a 7 series? yes, but i dont have 750Il money..Andi dont driver people around for a living(I have reclining rear seats). But i do use this device for my work email as well. It would be very impressive when i go to all the major banks during pricing etc and just whip out my Note and mark up the pdf that takes them forever to print, hand out, then revise to print out again. I would love to do some modeling in excel as well, Polaris seems a bit too clunky to do it seriously.
The thing is people like myself are the first to actually be productive with a device other than a BB. Its scary to those around who dont understand, and needs flawless execution or people wont see the point. My boss litterally was upset that i have my work email on my note, cuz they also gave me a BB. But im in a very small group that is testing out the system.
I will probally keep the note 10.1 and try and convice them to buy me the Series 5 for work. have to show its worth first though. Hopefully once the Wifi in the building is up, people will see a tablet can be much more than an iPad. Time will tell.
Well, this is the Windows 8 tablet that I will be purchasing.
With Clovertrail SoC (yes, it is Atom processor)... with faster + better GPU over ARM SoC atm (http://androidandme.com/2012/08/sma...e-fastest-android-phone-next-month-in-london/).... although, I have to see how S4 Pro looks like.... this should be a winner. The battery life should be on par with ARM counterparts (I doubt it will be better but it should compete in the department).
Keyboard + S-Pen (the same one as Galaxy Note 10.1).... this seems like a winner to me... out of all W8 tablets so far. Now.. the main question is the price... it won't be as cheap as ARM Android tablets but it shouldn't cost more than Ultrabooks with i5+ in it....
As for anything WinRT (unless Surface is released at the rumored $200 price)... it should be avoided at all cost when it launches.
Edit: Nvm.. they did announce the price... $649 for 64g SSD + 2gb RAM.... $749 with keyboard...
So, $50 cheaper than 64gb iPad.. & $100 more over 32gb Galaxy Note 10.1

I may be returning the note and repurchasing until this comes out so i may still return if this is a better product. The width seems a bit much, but like i said, it seems to add MUCH more capability(you can run android on windows anyway) for $100 more? Why wouldnt I want to?

Lol, expected to be on 9hr+ battery life on single charge. See how it goes once it gets released.....
Otherwise, FULL OS with x86..... & Galaxy Note 10.1 apps..... (and if you really think about it.. if Note 10.1 has 64gb.. it will only be $50 more...)
Only disappointment from IFA so far... lack of Samsung's A15 dual-core SoC. I was expecting Samsung's WinRT tab to be on A15 SoC.. but bleh.. it is on S4 dual-core. Not that I was going to purchase the A15 WinRT tab.... but... yea, was hoping to see that SoC to make a presence in some form of h/w.
There is some serious potential here. If this has a port for an external monitor and other peripherals (aka laptop replacement), then I just might have to return my Note. That $700 price tag is gonna sting though, $1K if I get series 7 with 128GB.

As far as I understand.. it does....
Also comes with USB 3.0 support I believe (at least on the keyboard dock.. i think)...
With $650 as the base price for 64gb SSD model ... I think we can expect other OEMs to release their W8 tablets around $550 to $600 range (don't think any of them will be priced higher over Samsung or Sony for that matter).... This is the price range I expected for the Clovertrail tablets & it's a great value. Now.. since none of us have one in hand.. we won't know how it will actually perform in the real world yet... but that's serious potential with great value.
As for WinRT tablets.... I should expect a $400 price range... but with W8 Clovertrail/Trinity tablets being around $550 to $650 range... & with very very limited ecosystem... I don't expect that to do well at all.
Btw, I don't think Series 7 or any other i5+ W8 tablets are worth the money. Cost too much... & for that.. to do serious work, you really need a bigger screen. Series 7 & other Intel i5+ tablets also have "fan" included with crap battery life (will weight just as much as ultrabook with keyboard dock).... not much benefit over Ultrabooks. Better to purchase Ultrabooks over i5+ W8 tablets.... W8 Ultrabooks will come in Touchscreen, Discrete GPU, much more storage... & can expand the RAM if needed (cheaper too).
I think the Series 5 throws a HUGE wrench into the works.
What's the point in a Note 10.1, when for a few dollars more I can have the same WACOM stylus input on a Windows machine that gets the same battery life and has 100% MS Office compatibility?
I purchased the Note 10.1 as an e-ink device, to go paperless. This device works, but I am always having to take extra steps to get documents synced to the cloud. I want an all-in-one solution that is seemless, integrated with MS Word, and doesn't cost $1k+.
What advantage does the Note 10.1 have over this new Series 5 other than a $150.00 cheaper pricepoint?
I hope the user experience isn't too terrible with the Atom CPU like it was with netbooks. Unless I specifically need x86 compatibility I'm not too excited about returning to the bloat, unreliability, poor user experience, relatively mediocre battery life, heat output, high maintenance, etc. of Windows. Plus, I use Google Voice for SMS and calls so the GN 10.1 is constantly running in low power with great battery life. My Thinkpad with 8-cell high capacity battery seems to drain a lot faster just being in hibernate doing absolutely nothing.
It sounds good, but I can guarantee the price will make it non-competitive with the Note 10.1. Same with the Surface tabs when they come, I can practically guarantee the Surface Pro (the only model that can really compete with the N8013) will be $700-1000.
I was strongly considering a Surface tablet before jumping on the Note 10.1 ship but I'm more than happy with the N8013, it does everything I need it to do and nothing more and nothing less. Anything more, I have my laptop. Anything less and I'd have just bought an iPad again.

The 2014 LG - V400 & V700 Tablets Are In The Pipeline.. Opinions?

Well...
Looks Like our family is expecting 2 new members..
The 2014 LG - V400 & V700 as of this writing are passing through the FCC.. I could be dead wrong but the V400 sounds like a 7" tablet and the V700 possibly a 10 - 12" device.
How do you feel about adding or upgrading to one of these units? has the V500/V510 been pretty much what you expected? Or maybe a better question would be.. Has LG met your expectations to a level that you would consider purchasing an LG tablet again? I would say it's a given that the V700 will be packing the Snapdragon 801/805 3gigs of Ram and possibly that 2K display that's coming on the LG-G3.. is that enough muscle to tempt you to upgrade from the V500?
While I have only had it a week, I am suitably impressed enough with the Gpad 8.3 to choose LG over Samsung for my next phone/tablet purchase.
With all the recent deeply discounted sales, and the discontinuation at Best Buy, it's quite possible that one of these new tablets is an 8.3 upgrade. If that's the case, I'm only semi-interested. A reboot will cost $350 (or more?) again, and I'm very happy with my 8.3. After all, I don't use it for anything I feel it's lacking in right now. Graphically-intense games (Asphalt 8, Soulcalibur), work fine, videos look great (and a 4K screen would be wasted), and browsing and ebooks don't exactly require a powerhouse. An 801 or 805 Snapdragon powered 8.3 with 3gb of RAM and a quadHD screen would be cool and all, but I don't need that.

I already know from experience that 7 is on the small end for me, and since reading is a big factor for me, 10 inches would be too big. Right now, this is the perfect form factor for me. I might consider a 10-incher for more online reading/browsing I suppose, but only as a complement, not a replacement. To be clear, I do not consider a different size as an upgrade no matter what the performance improvements.
I thoroughly love this tablet, so yes, i would gladly buy LG again, and certainly recommend it. I think there is nothing close to it in terms of price/performance right now. The only think I might really wish for is greater battery life, or a brighter screen for sunlight use, but even then, it is not a deal breaker.

same here. I was an original LG G2x owner that everybody knows what a freaking mess that was. The worst phone I ever owned. So i stayed away from LG. But then I decided to buy LG pad and love it so far. waiting to see what LG g3 will look like.
NO wonder it has been on a fire sale for $230 this past week. My Pad is coming next week. 7" is too small and 10" or more is too big. 8" is perfect.

Until there's a rock solid ~8.9" offering, ideally a Nexus or GPE, I'll stick with my G Pad GPE (daily driver) and my Nook HD+ (really only used as a comic reader now). I'm hoping the rumors of a Nexus 8.9 later this year are true and that the price is right.
As for the V510, there is no reason to change/upgrade. The screen size is perfect, and everything is damn near instantaneous in opening and response. The kernel needed some tweaking, and there are still a few items missing, but not enough to warrant bothering with it. I'm guessing at this point I will keep this tablet until the screen on a new one allows full sun reading and a foldable device that weighs considerably less. Anything else is just fluff.
Funny that I may not have too long to wait.

I think most will agree.. 8 inches is the *Goldie Locks* Sweet Spot for tablet size..
But.. I also think the allure of a Higher Res Screen 1920 x 1080 to 2560 x 1600 (2K Resolution) and a jump from 1.7 GHz to 2.5GHz and the promise of Key-Lime Pie 4.5/5.0 out of the box or with a swift update this fall, will be enough to change a lot of our minds..
By then, the pressure of the Nexus-8 and maybe even an updated Galaxy Note 8.4 will have a lot of us re-thinking how we feel at this moment..

Nexus 8 is still just a rumor, and the updated Galaxy Note is low res, so no chance. As to the Tab Pro specs, here's the thing: I paid $213 for the G Pad and am very happy with it. The Tab Pro is nice, but aside from some incremental improvements (the G Pad already has a Retina display as per Apple's own definition), things like the pen, or improved camera are of no interest to me. Truly NONE.
I am not a graphic artist, and I barely do any handwriting nowadays, though I write for a living. As to the rear camera, I have never even used it once, since my go-to camera is my LG G2, and for more serious pictures, I have more serious equipment. The front camera is more than good enough for video Skyping.
So do I think the faster CPU, and higher resolution screen are worth an extra $150? Nope.

You sound like a *Happy Owner* of the V500...
And for a purchase price of $213.00 Brand New.. You got a Great Deal.
As for as this "Low-Res" 2014 Samsung Galaxy Note 8.4 you are referring to... I can find no such device..
Correct Me if I'm wrong.. but it sounds like.. you thought I was referring to the Samsung Galaxy "Pro Tab 8.4".. I was not.
But I do agree.. the Pro Tab 8.4's price of $399.00 is too high.. just like the G-Pad at $349.00 on launch was too high.

Got Cha..
It looks like Samsung is going to have 3 distinctive lines... Tab Series.. Tab Pro Series.. and the Note Series of tablets..
I'm sure there will be an updated Note 8.0 version at some point in 2014.. given how popular the 2012 Note 8.0 was there is bound to be an updated version.
But I have to admit.. if that V700 is indeed a 10" slate with full 2K resolution, Snapdragon 801/805 @ 2.5 or > and priced @ $449 - $499.99 and has a sleek bezel design.. it's going to be tempting to me..
Look Their should be only 2 tablets in this world for any manufacture, one you can hold in 1 hand and another model that needs 2 hands. Anything else is just noise and will be discontinued. Why samsung has like 12 models in the $250-500 range ill never know.
My wish list for the next gpad is same rez, brighter/better screen, a portrait/landscape kickstand, and a back not made of butter.

Back made of butter? As to kickstand, a case is your friend. Not sure about portrait, but mine supports landscape just fine.
If Samsung has that many models, then clearly they have a market for them, so bully for them. It is funny that they do not have any that can compete with the LG in price/performance (current price $200-250 of course).
Does a custom ROM helps the battery life on this tablet?

Ok, so I've bought the LG GPad 7 v400.... How do I root it and flash a custom recovery?

There is root (via stumproot(?))
No boot loader unlock possible right now , so no custom ROM/kernel/recovery
