Did I get a used or otherwise non-stock phone? Strange "Caping" app preinstalled. - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Did I get a used or otherwise non-stock phone? Strange "Caping" app preinstalled.
I ordered an advertised-as-new Mi A1 via a US seller on Amazon. Phone came with this very odd app pre-installed. No launcher item, but it was installed. When opened, it showed the attached screen. Was able to find it in the Play Store as well. Text is in Indonesian, only.

got this app on my phone after feb update ... just uninstalled it, don't know what it is at all

Yep! Seems like it came with the update. DIdn't see it in my app drawer, but when I looked for in Play it said it was installed and that it wasn't installed through Play. No problem uninstalling it though.

Probably a bundling deal for Indonesian phones. I'm in Indonesia but haven't got the update yet so I can't confirm, though.

Market problems with new root?

Hi, I know I've read of other people having the same problem I'm having where there are apparently missing from the market. Has anyone found a solution?
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Which root method did you use? I had the market issues with the first couple of root versions, but my phone and the market are working perfectly now with the latest 3 step version. Im also using market enabler with no issues either. Would consider re-rooting with the newest method. Really doesnt take very long once you get used to it.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
I've used the latest R2B020 3 step method (with steps 4 and 5 for my Rogers X10a). Still can't find Pure Calendar Widget, or Tapatalk Pro. I should try enabler...
He's got a point.. There used to be an app before on the market called countouch launcher but somehow disappeared from mine!!
Everything else is perfect though.. removed alot of the built in apps and it runs smooth as ever for me
All thanx to the geniuses who rooted this phone!!
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
There is a problem because of the region the firmware's from.
I got market enabler, but there's some apps I want that I still don't see in the market
If anyone knows how to configure market enabler to allow stuff from rogers (canada) that'd be great

Yeah, got the same issues with my X10a. Market enabler app is quite simple really. all it does is use the MCC MNC codes (see wikipedia) for you mobile operator and sets them in some config files (see the wiki on market enabler project hosting website).
There is something much deeper going on here. I had purchased UltimateJuice before rooting with the crappy Japanese Firmware and market was able to find it after the root as well. But, this time around with the R2BA020 firmware... not quite so.
I wrote to the developer of UltimateJuice and he mentioned that Android Market terms forbid some access to rooted/custom firmwares. Personally I don't see how how Google manages to enforce that.
There is certainly some way in which we can tweak around the settings somewhere to make Android Market realize that we are legit. I mean look at brut.all's google navigation hack...
EDIT: I did try almost all the market enabler settings but didn't manage to to see my app. The developer told me that he had create a version specifically for that situation (its called UltimateJuice (Alternate))... lacking more details, I dont know what that means...
Interesting... I don't think root has anything to do with it though because I have been missing these Alps since I flashed r2ba020 originally (the telenor one).
I too can confirm that market enabler does not work. What I'm wondering is if Google is limiting the apps in some way because the firmware us new.

I think it's some kind of market bug. I had the same when I debranded from 1.0.14 o2 to 1.0.16 generic.
After some weeks everything worked fine again. So I think google has to unlock new firmware for their market ?!?
Make sure you system kill (with taskpanel etc) the market after you make changes with market enabler. Maybe obvious, but some may forget.a
i'm having almost the same problem, i tried download the market enabler and and tried to view in market for paid software but cant see any also, i used appbrain i can see a few only but not much at all
I'm also having some problems with the market, before root I had an app called myplayer which was a bbc iplayer app.
Can anyone else who is in the UK check the market to see if you can find this app?

I believe this is dependent on the firmware region that you use to root the device. The myPlayer app is restricted to the UK only, so if the firmware is not officially recognised as a UK build you will not be able to see the app on the Android Market.

Thanks a lot for checking mate.
I have now installed Market Enabler, according to it I was already identifying as Orange UK (234-33). I have tried all other UK network codes and still cannot see the myplayer app.
Does anyone have a link to the .apk file so I can bypass the market altogther?
Issues
I am another proud owner of a rooted x10a (now x10i)
But I got problems, I cannot sent MMS with the rooted phone, it just looks like im missing an app because, but i don't know where to find it, and I have the right APNs. So if someone can help us out with this issue I'll will be very grateful.
Also timescape is missging the facebook and tweeter plug-ins :-S
You guys are my best shot
Now, this is interesting to me. I tried to do the rooting option, but I got stuck on step 2, which couldn't find my device. So I used SEUS to update, and it let me update to R2BA020. I assumed that, coming through SEUS, this would be an official, unrooted update, as if I was going back to the default (although it came on O2 in the UK with the R_whateveritwas_016 firmware). I didn't like the idea that a rooted phone caused a few issues anyway, but the R2BA020 update has made a HUGE difference to my battery life.
Then I noticed that the O2 branding had gone - not much, just O2 updates in Timescape that I didn't want anyway...
But I noticed that my lovely Death Star Clock was no longer in the market, and MyPlayer also has gone...
Dang... so it seems like my phone no longer thinks I am in the UK or something.
I've got Beebplayer though, which I preferred to MyPlayer anyway.
But, it's a bugger... I LOVED my Death Star clock!

Can't get some apps to show in market

Hey,
I'm running the cognition 2.3.4 rom and i have the newest market. One issue i have is i can't see some of the apps i have purchased in the market (Marine US east for example). I also can't find apps like onstar my link.
I've tried the market enablers to no avail.
Any tips would be great.
Thanks
Return to the older market version and use Market Enabler. I had the same problem with the new Market and solved it this way.
Backup build.prop
Open build.prop and change every line from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3 and XXKG1 to XWKE7. Save and reboot. Install desired appas then just restore build.prop
Unfortunately this looks like Google have tightened up on the region restrictions. I can no longer buy apps at all with the new market, or via the market.android.com.
From what I can tell, google is checking the country that your payment method is registered too, as opposed to the region that your phone is set to with MarketEnabler
I can still buy on my tab with the old market, anyone know if there is a way to block the update to the new market when Google decides to role it out?
I'm running 2.3.4 cognition rom and I could not even see Visidon applock that I read about on this forum, on 2.33 I could....very strange...fortunaly I found the apk here on the forum
Any fix for this so I can download everything?
I had the same problem with call recorder. I contacted killer mobiles who said it was a market problem. Market replied that the app had copy- protection thing on it. I contacted killer mobs again and they wanted my ime number and market purchase number to activate my app as bought. My app, before, did not show up as bought and I had to search for it and was shown as a trial. Perhaps you could ask the app makers is this the problem. This was with the old market. Also, the new market is in my opinion, bloatware; full of photos and such. I've gone over to 1mobile market which I find good. I did try to replace the new market with the old vending.apk but it kept changing back on a reboot.
Adrian.

So i still could use some help with this problem
It seems no matter what rom (2.3.3 or 2.3.4) i can't get the Marine: US East app to show up. This also doesn't depend on the markt i'm using. I Just turned on my atrix, installed 2.3.4 on it and the market auto updated and sure enough the app showed up in the list.
Now i think this might be a location issue. I'm on AT&T here in the states, but i feel like maybe the phone thinks that i'm in europe or something(if that's possible).
If anyone has any tips i would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks

Even on stock on the stock rom i didn't even see the apps.
I just edited the build prop changing everything i could think that would mess with the market and i still can't get some things to show up
Well i thought i'd keep people updated on this cause it was driving me crazy.
I couldn't get Marine: US East to show up, so i emailed them. One of their suggestions was my market was blocking copy protected apps. So i googled that and found that google needs to update their fingerprint data base to allow specific phone firmwares to access it.
one way to tell if your phone can see copy protected apps is to search for "Topmarkettest" and if you see the copy protection app then that means you can see copy protected apps.
I solved this (as mentioned in an earlier post but apparently i'm a block of cheese) by just changing the fingerprint in the buildprop file.

A Strange App appeared in my installed apps

Hi guys,
i have a strange app in my google play installed app list.
I attached a screenshot so you can see.
It seems in some way connected to the Polaris Office, when I launch it Polaris lauch, when I disable Polaris via applications panel the Open Button in the Google Play panel disappears. (It is "Apri" in italian in this screenshot)
Some of you guys is experiencing this ?
I am not rooted and I have not sideloaded any app, always used Android Market...
Any clues ?

Happened to me as well, I think this should be reported to Google and Infraware ASAP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1565900
I'm un-rooted running totally stock and I had the app show up also. Not sure what it is, but I know I haven't installed anything I do not recognize.
Can confirm this as well on ARHD 3.1.0
I'm running US stock rooted and don't see anything like that on mine. It looks Korean though.
Maybe it's something the Polaris Office app or another stock app fetched recently. My Polaris Office app is not allowed access to the Internet.
I have this too. How do we investigate this further? I've reported it on the market but not comfortable having some unknown app which can not be uninstalled...
I also have this app and when I open it it runs the fille explorer in polaris office

This scenario sounds plausible, but it makes me wonder now why I don't have it. I am on stock and have uninstalled none of the prepackaged apps.
It's an app that is installed somehow onto the tablet. It is not uninstallable (using normal methods). It is somehow linked to Polaris Office.
If you root your phone, install Titanium Backup and then uninstall Polaris Office, then the app will disappear.
Strangely, I got this appear today for first time on my WW TF101 B60. I went back to stock ICS 403 using NVFlash and it said immediately after login that there was an update (from ASUS), which i installed. Upon login, I opened Google Play and saw this app for first time. I then install Titanium Backup (After rooting) and uninstalled Polaris office and the app went away.
I do not know where this app comes from, because I have reset it again with nvflash, checked market and it wasnt there, then applied ASUS update and checked market and still not there, even though Polaris office is still installed.
Weird
Hmm.. I'm stock and unrooted as well (always have been) with all updates, just checked my apps and I do NOT have this app in my list.
I wonder where you guys are getting it from..
Stock, unrooted B40 (is and always has been) and I have this app on my list in Google Play.
I'm pretty sure it's a bug with the new renamed Market failing to identify apps correctly.
I suppose it is a bug yes!
It just disappeared from my installed Apps.
yea i think its similar to this

Updating Samsung Apps

Almost every day, new update of several Samsung Default apps are arriving on apkmirror.
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsung-electronics-co-ltd/
Is it ok to install these, i know they are verified, but seeing that latest updates are not automatically pushed to my phone or delayed, can i install these, or will it break any future automatic updates for Apps?

Yeahhhhhh, I'd stay away from the ones on apkmirror onless you NEED to be on the bleeding edge of the betas or testing, cuz they are usually optomized for diffrent devices
I install all of em. Never had a problem. BUT most of them won't install because of a package with same name error. What I do is when a few versions have gone by I'll save em and when I reset my phone (which I do once a month or so because I'm weird like that) I'll install them all right after I finish initial setup and they install fine.
apkmirror is where I got the Pixel Dialer/Contacts along with FB Messenger Lite. I don't have many if any Samsung apps left on my phone.
I trust that website, but that's just me.

"Caping" app silently installed on system

I've just noticed that we have some hidden apps installed on our "pure" Android device. "Caping" is one such app that you won't be able to find anywhere on the phone, even in the system apps, but when you go to the Play store, you can see that you can uninstall that app.
I've noticed the app using the "Action launcher" because it displays it in the app drawer, but the stock Launcher 3 doesn't...
I've been searching for it for a while and just thought that it installed and uninstalled with the Action launcher as bloat, but today I've received a notification from the "Capting" app and that's how I realized that the app is still present and went ahead and deleted the app via notification long press...
I've seen in the Mi A1 forum that Xiaomi installs this app silently on that phone so probably the same happened to us.
There may be more of these hidden, silent apps and if you know of any more, please report here. For everyone else not wanting these hidden apps lurking around their device, feel free to remove it.
I don't see the app using action launcher..
TKDN regulations Working flawless on our country ? ?
not on my phone. I guess it's just Xiaomi automatic installation on the first run. I always clean out every app except the remote since that's the only one I used.
And for others, that Caping app only available on Indonesia region afaik.

Caping (and Babe) is one of the prerequisite apps that every vendor/OEM must have installed on their devices in order to bypass the Indonesian regulation, and since some of Xiaomi devices rom is compiled in their HQ/Server in Indonesia (see about phone, on the compilation date you'll notice the time is in WIB which means Waktu Indonesia Barat or Western Indonesian Time) i guess these apps is pretty much baked on the system.

This is crazy. Luckily I don't have any installed on my phone...
Just to update. There are a couple of other Xiaomi apps installed on the device not displayed in the app drawer of the stock launcher (Launcher 3) such as the Xiaomi Store and others. I've found them using Lawnchair launcher. Thought this might be useful information for anyone wanting a bloat free phone.

You can uninstall Mi Store and Mi Community also. These three apks are hidden for those who live in India.
Also, there are few telemetry apps that you guys should disable via adb:
/system/app/TelemetryService/TelemetryService.apk=com.qualcomm.qti.haven.telemetry.service
/system/app/Spock/Spock.apk=com.miui.spock
