mi6 as a hardware is great, I can't complain
software, to put it mildly, I am not fan of it.

So now more 8.x roms to be expected right?

No but the current ROMs will merge the sources from Xiaomi so potentially will get more stable.

Lines up perfectly with the LOS 15.1 release, hope they make it official soon.

"Less buggy", maybe.
As for stability, I think almost all ROM that has been developed here is stable. No force restart or anything.
But things like Bluetooth, Camera, Quick Charge 3.0, battery drainage has always been the problems reported time to time.

OPO vs D855

Hi all,
New here; long time silent follower/downloader but never posted.
I had a couple of handsets spare in the house and lately have been a bit sick of iOS so decided to dust off the old OPO and G3, and to flash a custom Nougat ROM. I thought I'd end up using the OPO as it's higher spec than the G3.
I've installed AOSP-CAF 7.1 on both phones, with stock Open-GApps.
The interesting thing is that despite the OPO having 50% more RAM and the exact same CPU, the D855 feels much snappier and gives a better user experience. Any ideas on why? Is it the kernel? Bummer at the minute as I'll be forced to use the G3, even though it only has 16GB and 2GB, also with the lower res front camera. With the display being higher res as well, I'd have expected the OPO to trounce the G3! Any ideas?
Thanks!
Change ROM ?
Or change the kernel :highfive:
Seriously, I think that is due to the kernel settings. Sometimes (i remember on Omnirom),some roms need other kernel settings to feel better and smoother

Why? I was wanting something stable & fast; I gather Lineage has bluetooth & Android Auto issues which are both deal breakers for me.

Hmmm, thought it may have been the kernel. Looks like it's some trial and error then!
Thanks.
Lol even stock Cos13.1 of OPO will perform better than Lg G3 for sure.

That's what I thought too, but when I got the ROM running on the G3 it was definitely smoother. Any suggestions for ROMs/Kernels?
Definitely want Nougat and definitely minimalist/stock Gapps. Don't like the funky custom looks on a lot of builds.

This is a stable rom based on latest lineage os with builds updated regularly and optimized kernel for as smooth as it gets performance.

No,Bluetooth works perfectly fine. Moreover if you encounter any other issues, the developer of this rom is kind enough to fix it for you.
Had a look through the thread for it, looks promising. All this though, and I dropped the OPO last night. The repair shop has it now, and they've never heard of one. Won't read the sim. Eeek.

Not enough love for the Max 2?

Why is there so little love for this device?
there is only 5 threads in the dev subforum.
2 of them is about recovery
1 is on unofficial LineageOS
1 on a DPI changing patch and the last one on beta MIUI 9
thinking to myself if i've decided on the less loved device lol
Xiaomi has not released the kernel source. This makes development challenging. Things are probably going to change when that happens in roughly 5 months (based on delay to release Mi Max sources).

5 months is a long time man lol... that is kinda disappointing.

I was an earlier obsessive ROM/kernel flasher and have now sort of settled down. I honestly feel that stock roms are good enough for most general use cases. What I would suggest is to get on the Global MIUI beta for the weekly updates. Nothing offers more stabiility (in terms of connectivity, bluetooth, GPS, etc) for a device as the stock rom and I am saying this from experience.

Thank you for the inputs.
I played around for a day / two but MIUI, it is just a little too messy.
Settings seems to be all over the place.
I've been on android devices since cupcake and always like the simplicity of aosp or lineage in this case ever since cyan. That is y I'm looking forward to lineage official support. I guess it'll happen, just gotta wait till kernel source is releaseed. :fingers-crossed:

I agree. With my first android phones, custom roms could be an improvement. But now adays, theyre usually worse. I have had a redmi note 2, redmi note 3, mi max and now mi max 2. Miui-roms has been the best rom for all of them. especially battery life and camera.
I root, delete apps I dont want, choose the launcher and theme I want and I can get the look I prefer.

MIUI is not that bad at all in my opinion. Give it a try a little more. It's not bloated, interface is relatively clean. I just don't like that dodgy built-in cleaner app.

it'll come a day, whereby things will just be like @praveen6585 .. i'll get tired of following updates and flashing this unlocking that and just settle with what comes out of the box. there's just too much options nowadays.. and too much to read into lol.
There will be more mi max 2 buy by Indians as there is huge discount in flipkart. So future development will be good for this giant.
Got this phone for INR 11700/- (184 USD)

Now looking back worried, because there seems to be no stable custom ROMs out there...

They r great at coming out with cheap phones with good specs but suport is ughs.
I now only use this for media consumption if am not on my tablet.
Have moved on to the op5t.
This have been a standby for me anyway. I’ll be glad if theres even a decent kernel out there.

I'm with you. I'm a former serial flasher with all my samsung phones but now I'm more than content to have something that just works...no crashes, no spontaneous reboots, no compromises. I did switch to the DEV rom so I get weekly updates which suits me fine. LOVE this phone.

LineageOS soon for the Mi A1?

Hello,
When do you think we will have LineageOS for our device? Unofficial or official? Thanks.
That's a good question. Let the experts about ROM development say something
Sent from my Mi A1 using Tapatalk
Well, I'm no expert but Xiaomi needs to release the kernel source before we start seeing custom ROMs. They said they would do it in three months. So, let's wait and see.
The phone is pretty accessible and runs under the android one frechise so, just wait till they release the sources.
When kernel sources are released, im sure custom ROMs will start to roll out.
I really hope guys!

What we need is a custom Kernel first , This phone is Awesome but the score is worse than Redmi Note 3 ?! That's not fair

It's because the Redmi Note 3 has a better CPU "Snapdragon 650" vs The Mi A1 "Snapdragon 625"
what's really weird is that Xiaomi downgrade the CPU on the newer phone "Redmi Note 4" to the Snapdragon 625

Benchmark score doesn't matter and by the way Redmi Note 3 does have a faster processor but it is not power efficient and heats up more than 625.

The SD625 is built on 14nm process whereas the SD650 is built on 28nm process(older, gets heated after playing for long sessions, and reduces its speed)

Why would you asking custom rom when you already have pure android, the stock one is definitely more stable, our software is actually already incredible only need more fixes on camera stability and some minor issues,I'd prefer asking for fixing the issues instead of build from the scratch

There can be multiple reasons. I am waiting for the sources in order to have a clean Lineage install with signature spoofing. That and microg on top to get rid of gapps.
Also, maybe some people like the customisation that exists in some particular roms.
+1, also waiting for LineageOS for this device.

Custom ROM with 3.18 kernel

First of all I would like to thank all the great devs that keep supporting this phone.
But I miss a really bugless ROM. ROMs with 3.18 kernel were almost perfect, but they aren't developed anymore. 4.9 kernel is great too, but it has some annoying (for me at least) limitations. Miui camera doesn't work properly and it's a pity because it's the only app (as far as I know) that can use both sensors at the same time. Nhappyman's camera module isn't working (no smooth videos and no long exposure).
Mtp and vibration aren't working in TWRP custom recovery.
Is there any developer that can build an updated ROM based on 3.18 kernel? I bought a Mi A1 for dual-camera setup and I would like to use his full potential with MIUI camera AND GCam. At the moment it's possible only on 3.18 kernel so I'm wondering if there is any "brave" Dev who wants to go that way. I think that many other users like me are waiting for that. Am I wrong?
You're right, I agree with you. Of course it is quite an achievement for the development of this device, and I actually enjoy the new kernel and it's securities advancements, but it is not stable compared to the officially supported 3.18. For example, I have a Quick charger but can't use it properly because it's not working on kernel 4.9, at least right know.
Not being ungrateful btw, I totally support the continuous development of 4.9, and I hope someday it will be just as stable as 3.18.

You can use LR v10.0.3 it's still based on 3.18 based kernel. Or go for Revenge OS, it's also 3.18 based
I'm not going to say anything about TWRP installer that was never supported officially by TeamWin or quick chargers that aren't even supported by our device, but I have a few things that I want to say specifically about MIUI Camera (and the reason why I'm always acting cocky when someone talks about it).
Supporting it was and always will be too much of a hassle for developers. It's not because "damn devs don't care about meme camera", but rather because whatever Xiaomi does for their camera features is very far from perfect, tends to break very often and also introduces random issues with third-party camera apps.
Recent switch to the open source camera HAL helped us to get a much more stable and reliable base (as well as fixing some very annoying issues we had before) but it also was the final nail in the coffin of MIUI Camera as it relies on undocumented proprietary features that we can't implement in any possible way.
I know that it can be hard for someone to cope with the lack of some well advertised marketing feature essential camera functionality, but we also have to go to concessions to make our support continuous and more future-proof.

Totally understandable, it's not rocket science to know that exclusive "features", which is closed source, is really hard (mostly impossible) to port to custom development. Many devices suffers from this, like the implementation on Moto display on Motorola phones, for example. I'm not a developer myself, but I know a thing or two with my experience as android enthusiast, and for development to work it means you're gonna let some "goodies" go in favor of it.
Thanks for your work btw!

Really? Nice, have been looking for an updated pie rom running 3.18
Now that Flex gave us the possibility to use miui camera on 4.9 kernel there's no need of 3.18 anymore (IMHO). To use MTP on TWRP we can boot it from PC and it will work.
Touch screen misbehaves with 4.x kernel
My mi a1 touch screen misbehaves with 4.9 kernel.
So i have to stick with the stock rom even i want to use a custom rom.

Me too, in fact my screen doesn't work at all with 4.9 kernel. It was a cheap replacement from aliexpress. I was hoping to find some updated ROMs with 3.18 but I will have to just stick to stock. It's a shame.

rom suggestion

hello dudes, i've been that kind of user that tries many mods and reads up about every possibility, but now sadly i have no more time for it :c (uni+work+gf+everything else)
i'm running an s7edge exy with stock rom and i'm considering switching to a custom one. actually battery life on stock is still amazing but i miss root features (and i totally hate that hecking youtube premium ad that keeps showing up) and that extra useful rotate suggestion button that came in pie.
what i'm more interested in are speed, battery and ad hoc features (always on, edge lighting, edge tabs): some friend of mine suggested me that pie performs alot better than oreo and now i'm asking: is waiting for 10 roms worth it or not (will it perform even better?) ?
would you suggest a stock rom or a samsung oneui based? is there any actual list to look up for?
ty alot ♥

Would you suggest to wait for LOS or not? I mean, it's just about stability or there is some difference in terms of performance (between Los and black diamond)?
(and why blackdiamond n8 instead of nfe? I can't find the difference but the nfe looks more updated, isn't it?)
I would rather go with a pure 8.0 Oreo ROM that looks like it used to look on Nexus 5X. Just pure Android. Does anyone know where can I find one?

The experience on N8 id way better and the experience is more fluid. Samsung basically made the Note FE pie firmware just because they had to because of the note 7 fiasco so the libs are not well optimized. N8 is a lot better imo.
As for LOS. I will recommend waiting for the stable release of LOS17. The beta version have bugs. I also don't recommend LOS16 because i haven't had a good experience on jt.
My go to configuration is N8 with Thunderstorm kernel.

Should I pick the note based Rom that you suggested in the beginning? What about OneUI2 or Android 10?

Yes Los is based on Aosp and has no samsung crap.
Just clean android focused on performance and battery.
As fas as Oneui is Blanckdiamond is good.
Once OneUi2 is out for s10 series , developers will try to port it but porting android 10 to a legacy device is hard and i doubt s7 will get a fully stable build of OneUi2.
