Wifi on Custom OREO ROMs & Kernels - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

On Custom Oreo ROMs/kernels such Renovate ICE O, Batman ROM, Nox Kernel, notorious kernel , Wifi does not work on my S8 G950F. The only way to make these work up to now, was to restore the boot image from stock rom.
Whilst restoring stock boot.img does resolve the issue, it creates another in that after reboot wifi takes about 2 mins to turn on.
This Solution Worked for me, but doesn't always work for everyone, try it:

the stock boot is one you would take from twrp, or if you don't have that can install soldier rom, skip all the install options, then just backup boot in twrp

I have very kindly been given a temp fix by @Noxxxious who makes the truly excellent Nox kernel. Will update as this develops & hopefully share a perm fix for everyone

Thought I’d chile in here as well so people learn this problem is for real, and that I know how to flash custom roms....
I am always doing the boot.img trick that @StackOverflow13 taught me a white a go.

I take it the 2 files trick didn't work for you? So are you facing the issue of really slow WiFi start-up after reboot? Glad your here anyway. The more people we get the more chance a dev or devs will take notice

Still dealing with this in 2020. I'm using a Japanese S8+ with stock Oreo firmware and a custom kernel, the second I flash Magisk and my boot image gets replaced, WiFi breaks. I checked the file directory mentioned in post 174 and I see both files are present on my phone, unless the files @noxxious posted are modified in some way.

Need some help about flashing a ROM

Hi guys
I need some help. First of all, I have some experience flashing stuff. I had a galaxy s2 that I moded before.
Got my note 3, 4 days ago. And I'm already hating the sammy rom. My gps sucks, and tw is lagging a lot. So I was thinking about flashing something better into this badboy. I'm not asking for wich is the better rom. Actually, I feel like a newcomer that cant tell wich kernel or recovery should I flash. I've search a lot trying to understand what to do. On my old S2 I only had to flash philz kernel and from there I just had to flash root and after that I could do w/e I wanted.
So I want to know 3 things:
if there is a similar system since I hate flashing trough odin.
Need someone to point my in the right direction on a kernel (loved dorimax on S2, or apollo)
And what should I do to flash TPRW
I know that maybe I didnt looked hard enough on the forum, but, the information is scattered, I'm going in circles on what to do. I dont care about knox btw, the cellphone is out of warranty.
Thanks for reading

If you want to flash the custom ROM then you can flash it from any custom recovery, like you said Philz is one, but people generally prefer TWRP for our phones. And as custom ROMs generally come as a zip package you don't really have any option but flashing it from a custom recovery anyway. Odin is good as long as files are in tar format.
I loved the S2, my favourite was the Siyah kernel Anyway, I am using Audax kernel on my phone now, which is good, but you can also look at Arter kernel, its damn stable, and he is a great dev. There is another kernel called Lean, about which I am not really interested. And for ROMs I never move from anything non-TouchWiz based, cause those are the most stable ROMs out there, with least number of bugs and retaining the feature set of a Note phone, little laggy yes, but I can live with that rather than living with a plethora of bugs and other nuisances.
You have got a great phone, enjoy it.

Thanks for helping me.
S2 was a really fun phone, loved it until it died. Siyah was really awsome too
I need your help if possible. I'm feeling kind of bad since I dont want to be boring
Could you sugest me:
- A nice 1st time Lolipop ROM so I can get used to flash them
- You mentioned several kernels, what do you consider is the most stable from those.
- How to backup EFS folder (cant find any program or apk that does it, on my S2 I had NVTOOLS)
- A nice root methode (I've looked for a good root method and the one I tried didnt work and I had to flash the original firmware to get things good again.)
If I may ask, can you post links on what versions should I download (LP ROM, kernel and recovery)? Not sure if the forum rules permit it, in any case, PM'me with them if possible. I've got the LTE sm-n9005 version. Would be very thankfull if you could help me out with the basic stuff since I'm really unsure of what to download and what is compatible with(feeling like a total noob here).
Once again thanks for helping me

This, if you would like to use Xposed. If you don't need Xposed then use any stock Odexed ROM, for example this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649176
Now these are the ROMs which are basically stock ROM, with some nifty features added. But if you want a fully featured ROM then use AryaMod, http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/rom-aryamod-v1-tw-lollipop-t2990920
But all Xposed modules won't work with this ROM as it has its own modifications. But otherwise I don't think there is any feature which is lacking in this ROM  I was a happy user, if it weren't for Xposed I would still be using it I suppose.
- Stock kernel is the most stable man, seriously. But if you are like me who can't live without additional features then try arter, http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/arter97-kernel-galaxy-note-3-t3028148
Or try Lean, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488082
- Hold on, I have forgotten about the procedure, I will come back when I remember though.
- Rooting is easy. Flash TWRP, https://twrp.me/ Then flash this SuperSU zip from the recovery (TWRP), https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip

If you want to flash with Odin then you need this file, .tar one, https://dl.twrp.me/hlte/twrp-2.8.7.0-hlte-4.4.img.tar
I am not sure whether that link will open for you or not, but I just copied the URL.
PS: This is the link to EFS backup by the way, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447342

EDIT: **** me, I decided to install lean kernel to experiment and my ROM didnt booted, so I decided to instal araya xD

[GUIDE] How To Root SM-N9208

Hello Friends
I have been searching the internet for days on how to root the Note 5 N9208 dual sim and finally found something that seem stable.
DISCLAIMER: I am by no means taking credit for this root method, I am just sharing what I found because I know how hard the information can be to find on the internet. As you should already know, with flashing there is always a risk so you are always responsible for you own device
1. First you are going to want to enable OEM Unlock and USB debugging in the developer option.
2. Go to Samsung app store and get the CROM service app. (this is needed so you can flash custom roms, on some phones you won't be able to flash anything if you don't do this step)
3. Download Permissive kernel (from xiaolu) for N9208 with auto root: N9208-TW-Root (0909) .tar flash it with Odin3.10.7 (extract tar-file from zip, put it in section and flash AP)
At this point you should now have root, beyond this step will explain how to get TWRP recovery.
4. Official TWRP for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 DUOS you can found here ... (download tar-file, put it in AP section and flash with Odin3.10.7).
This information was accumulated by searching the web. My thanks goes out to all developers who help me to arrive at a root solution. If you, a developer come here and see a violation that I overlooked please inbox me and I will rectify it right away Thanks again
Thanks for the guide. Do you have more information on the kernel?

Sad to say, I didn't find much information on the web about the performance of this kernel. It just showed up as a way to gain root.
Not being about to accumulate any data on the kernel I kinda was back and forth in my mind if I should use it or not. after hours of thinking and really wanted root I decided to give it a go in a all or re-flash moment(nothing).
Turn out to be pretty good with no change in performance vs the stock kernel. Once flashed I saw superSU there installed and ready to go.
Now I was concern about the random reboots I heard about with other kernels but I have been using the phone for 3 days now and I haven't encountered any lags, no reboots, no drop of signals or calls. I have not yet installed any games on my phone so I don't know how it will be with heavy usage of that nature.
If you decide to give this a try please post any findings of abnormalities here. Thank you

No problems at all. No reboots or lags.
Nice guide for obtaining root!
I already have rooted my Note 5 using the SpaceX kernel, but as some of you know this kernel has the random reboot issue.
What would be the procedure for me to flash this kernel. Can I just flash over the current SpaceX kernel or would I have to go another route?
Appreciate the help.

Cheers for the quick help! So just Odin flash this kernel directly over my current setup...will get right to it
Flashed the kernel and rebooted...all seems well. Now further testing and hopefully no weird issues like random reboots and/or deep sleep bug.
and We still don't know where it came from ??
but it Works
I seen it on a russian site thats all I know
but it works !!
Indeed...it's all rather strange No dev, no nothing...but it does work :good:
I got 4% battery usage in some 10 hours standby and that's pretty decent in my book.
Performance seems on par with stock kernel. Now for another couple of days of further testing to see if it holds up...(no random reboots and such).
I was at about 6%at 7hrs.....but I have one drive syncing. ..but before I had 15-20%....
and no reboots and I am rooted!!!!

lol yup, there is no data at all on this kernel as far as I can search. one thing I can say for sure is that its doing very well in terms of performance. I play games, listen to music, make calls on both sims, send emails and have dual whatsapp going all day. with all that activity I manage to get 13 hours out of the phone, I plug in at 18%. to me thats good. What do you guys think?
l think we have a rooted in 9208 dual sim that doesnt reboot and works fine
curiousty leads me toWonder Where it came from and whats been done to it
Guys, will this work with the hong kong version (9200)?

This means one of two things. You are not flashing supersu on top of the ROM (most ROMs should be flashing it for you-- like mine). Any time you introduce a boot.img, it must be accompanied by a supersu flash. The kernels get patched by the SuperSU updater to be insecure, and disable verity.
Or, you simply did not decrypt data as instructed to do so. Good luck.
Sounds like you never flashed one of my ROMs...

[SM-J327P ROM BASE] QI2 Firmware Deknoxed and Deodexed

Like I have mentioned to the others in the J3 Emerge community, I had this done just didn't have the opportunity to upload it until today. This is a Deknoxed and Deodexed base for custom ROMs for users who are currently on the QI2 stock firmware. And since I did nothing but remove the odexes(including the one on the boot img iirc which is why it comes up with the typical custom kernel message on bootup) and removed Knox, I'm not posting this as a DevDB thread as Samsung did all the heavy lifting so to speak.
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745849072291691412
And yes, this can be flashed as is but as always, you do so at your own risk. I will not replace your device and neither will Boost Mobile nor Samsung in the event of data loss, corruption, theft, fire, pod people, etc.
Please do not mirror this zip without express permission from me.
I believe this COULD be used on VMUS and SPRINT as well, but because I do not have the Emerge from those carriers. Also, from what I see it can only be rooted using SuperSU in Systemless mode or Magisk.

If you're not on QI2 when you flash this, it won't work. No idea how to fix it unless you use the QI2 ODIN package to "upgrade" which is found on AFH under the user the_yankee, iirc. Not at pc so can't verify this. Have stuff to do rn so can't get on one.

Thanks! that's exactly what i was missing, I guess i was using a different version before, flashing the QI2 first did the trick.
I think I will put together a set of zips that can be used to get any of the three we are all on,working on the various versions. All a user will need to do is pick their carrier and flash it in TWRP after first boot that way the system writes the csc directory. I will post you all a link when I get them built. They are sorely needed and long over due.

is it possible to uninstall this rom?

Should I install custom rom?

Hi there. I am kinda new on these things.
I am at my home right now. I have the time to backup everything.
I am on stock right now , I have started getting a bit of lags here and there.
Should I root and install a custom rom?
And if yes , what is the best combination of kernel and rom for the best performance and battery.

DO NOT INSTALL CUSTOM ROM, if you have to ask that question.
On a serious note, a factory reset will take care of all lags.Rooting is for those who have a spare phone, want to play around and can afford brick sooner or later. Moto has determined stock to be best for all others.

Acknowledged !! and my apologies.
Rooting and custom roms work well on MotoG+.On some of the latest Oreo roms I was playing around with in the past couple of months, the camera app broke more often than once.If you can live with that in exchange for performance, LineageOS 15 and Pixel Experience roms worked great.
But as with any phone, you have to play around for the best of latest or for stability.
Just my two cents .

What about the battery life?
Can i use greenify etc with these roms?
Thanks for the reply
Install only if a stock firmware higher or equivalent to your current version is available. Else you will not be able to go back to stock. If you attempt to downgrade you will run into problems with bootloaders.

Battery life is pretty good on the custom rom side. All updated ROMs are now Android 8.1 and are 64 bit. I usually get 6-7+ hours screen on time and switch between every rom that's released For battery and customizations I recommend AEX or Validius. Also, you can use greenify on any of the custom ROMs and root with magisk and pass safety net as well. I Also recommend you download from telegram group as those links are updated more often than xda.
Telegram links are:
t.me/g5pluslinks ---> All new ROMs released no chat
t.me/motog5plus ---> Release of new ROMs / kernels but lot of chat too.

I believe that using custom kernel was the fix to that issue, not 100% sure as I never had the issue myself. Also, if you decide to go to a custom rom you won't have that issue (it only affects stock rom). Another option if you want to stick on stock is find the thread on here for TWRP flashable stock ROMs and use latest one for your phone.
I'm not able to select SD card storage in the recovery mode. What's the issue here? How do I fix it?
