Update or not - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bought a new Fire HD 10 today, it came with OS 5.4.
I was able to get SU and load Google Play.
I did then try to set a new Launcher, but have not yet succeeded.
Now my question:
Can I update the OS to 5.6.x?
Or would I loose a lot of the other items?
Any hints, what I missed on changing the launcher?

You can update, the version 5.6.0.1 is rootable, the version from today, perhabs tomorrow it will be changed

Interestingly enough, it wont update to 5.6.xxx
I even did a factory reset and it fails to update
then i downloaded the 5.6 bin from Amazon, dropped it on the tablet and it doesn't update...

GT-P7510 can't update to ICS

Purchased an open box Galaxy Tab 10.1 today for $238. Brought it home and instantly ran into trouble once the Market updated. Google Play locks up every time now. Cleared Market cache and no go. Google Play still locks up.
I see that ICS should be pushed out. OTA updates don't seem to be hitting my tab yet. I've tried several times.Opened Kies and sure enough it can't find my firmware version. Go figure. My next attempt was download mode and try to do a firmware upgrade via Kies. It gets to the part where it is downloading the firmware and ready for the install and then I get a pop up box in a different language. Needless to say I see nothing else and I guess it fails. Some luck.
Does anyone know of an ODIN with a STOCK ICS ROM that is up to date or know of a way to fix my issue?

I believe this is stock ICS stock for your 7510: hxxp://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyTab10.1/ICS/P7510XXLPH_P7510XEULPH_XEU.zip
There might be something wrong with your device and that might explained the reduced price and the open box. You might want to consider installing the latest recovery version from droidbasement and reset your device. Here is an excellent guide: hx*ps://docs.google.com/document/d/1luCfYEjOIH9K4WR8KsCMMFjZ9pXnes7Az41qMgOkrv0/edit (there are many way to install clockworkmod recovery, but this tutorial will help if you brick the device)

I think my fire tablet just updated on its own despite having the adb hide stuff done

Ive just rebooted my fire tablet after installing some minecraft mods, when I turnt it back on it came up with a promt saying it was installing the latest software or what ever it does when doing the ota, I knew this from upgrading to 5.0.1.
is it possible it was just doing what happens when normal android optimises apps on boot. is there a app to check the installed software version as im not near my pc to unhide and go in and check what firmware im on. I put this in general as it wasnt a question but just to inform that my tablet possibly had a update despite the proper steps taken to hide the ota and updates.
Saw Same Message But No Update (whew)!
For a split second I saw that same message too when first starting the Fire up. But nothing happened and nothing updated. So I think it's still blocked. Even checking for updates still fails.
So I think we're OK!

Have you tried unhiding to see the software version
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I didn't unhide it, but it says I'm still on 5.0.1. There was no update.
I saw the same thing but it didn't seem to update. I know the method i provided works for 5.0.0 to 5.0.1. Until there is a bump to 5.0.2 or whatever we don't know for sure if the "fix" works under 5.0.1.
Same thing happened to me but it was 3 days ago. I had been trying all day to install my adb drivers without success and switched off the device. When I restarted it immediately went into an update and I went into a panic that the new update would block the ability to access google play but immediately after the assumed "update" I successfully installed the adb drivers and google play without problem. I also checked the version and it still showed 5.0.1 so I wondered if my initial update on switching on the fire for the 1st time had somehow been unsuccessful and that had been what had been causing the inability to load the adb drivers although the tablet hadn't seemed to have any other problems and I had already downloaded and used several apps from Amazon.
I let it update upon first booting my Fire to 5.0.1. I was still successful in installing Google Playstore and hiding ads on lockscreen.
I'm not sure but i think that 'installing the latest software' screen is the android OS updating the dalvik runtime files after rebooting when an apk is modified. nothing to do with an ota.

That is my conclusion also.
I had this happen to me also. Considering amazon patched a root method I made sure to root and nuke any chance of a future OTA unless I wanted it too. That was a cheap move, Amazon.

OTA Update removes root and repairs deleted files

My device was running Fire OS 5.0 and I installed my copy of Titanium Pro (used APK extractor on another Android device as play not working on 5.0).
I then proceeded to kill as many Amazon processes based on my Remove Bloat thread - I actually deleted them from the device so that they were no longer there. I kept the OTA processes in place - reset the device from [Recovery Mode] and upon boot joined WiFi and proceeded with the upgrade to 5.01
The update by the looks of things repaired the Fire OS and the system processes that I had deleted were now back on the device (Kindle Book Store etc). It also removed root from the device.
So just like everyone says - disabled OTA updates if you do not wish t remove root.
Were you able to reinstall root post update?

Would love to know also
Sent from my Amazon Fire 2015
i reinstalled the firmware to give it real factory reset, and applied OTA twice yesterday, but I could make it rooted after that. So I guess you can reinstall root again because the updated system did not reject root.

Yes I was able to root 5.01 after the OTA update
I would strongly advise everyone to disable the OTA processes. If you want to update a new device from 5.0 to 5.0.1 you can do so manually. Fire (5th Gen) updates are available here https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201830180
Who knows when amazon will roll out the next OTA, tomorrow, next week, next month. And they certainly might block root with it. The fire cost us only $50, amazon may be losing money on the straight device price. They want us to spending money on all the premium amazon services that we are striping out as bloat. They may need the money to even break even.
Huh... This actually gave me some insight into the OTA bit. I went and pulled the latest update and it basically overwrites the system partition. That's why it seems to undo everything you did. This is good though because it also means if it won't boot then I should be able to get into 3e recovery and sideload the most recent update back to the device. I tested this by flashing google play then "repairing" using the update and google play was no longer present from this. It also doesn't seem to wipe userdata when doing this which is nice.

Kindle fire HDX 8.9 (Saturn) got updated to 5.0.0 and then to 5.1.1 todayy

updated to fire os 5 and followed quickly to updating to 5.1.1.1 today
this is a saturn 8.9 hdx i tried the http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/root-t3272362
root method for 5.1.1.1 but this command
fastboot oem append-cmdline "androidboot.unlocked_kernel=true"
came as invalid command for me so the boot loaders are still configured differently for the new hd6 and the older hdx because we don't have this cmdline parameter
Hello,
was there a possibility to prevent updating to 5.1.1 after 5.0 was installed or was it 1 update process?
Did you have sideloaded Apps installed and have there been any problems during installation?
Are the settings still the same or was there any kind of reset?
How about the speed of the system so far compared to OS4?

For others still waiting for an update: try to avoid the 5.0 -> 5.1 update as there *may* be additional flexibility to boot (not flash) a custom recovery from fastboot environment. This would offer the potential for custom roms on a 4th gen device. All TDB.
I haven't received the OTA so I checked the amazon website. It's not there either. Am I stuck waiting on the OTA?

Has anyone else got the ota yet? this is the first guy I seen has got 5.0 as of yet.
Hey sorry for the late reply
It updated to 5.0.0 first it was possible to stop the update to 5.1.1 by keeping WiFi off but I din't bother
I installed gapps and they work fine on 5.1.1 play store works fine all google apps like mail and maps and hangouts work solid no glitches the new version is smooth and way better YouTube app can play 1440p videos also I had to do the adb permission command to get play store to work
The way the ota is being rolled out is weird I know people who haven't received it yet on there kindle and it's been over 2 weeks since I got my update
lol... WOT?
Fire OS OTAs are usually Canary Releases [0]... or Narrow-OTAs (aka NOTAs): Rolled out to a small percentage of the populace initially after which these devices are monitored for stability and user-feedback. If all looks right, the OTAs are gradually rolled out to everyone (aka WOTAs).

Any body else received OS5 yet? I'm still on 4.5.5.1
I'm in the US, still no joy here!
Got it last night, updated, lost root in update but regained after with Kingroot no problem.
Been checking daily, just now got the update!

Just checked as well, amazon has the 5.1.1 update posted now.

In the US also. OS 5.1.1 is posted on Amazon for update NOW. 2 choices, select the OTA method or the manual way. The OTA didn't work for me as it couldn't find any updates; did download the file & use USB to copy the file to the internal storage (not into a folder) of the Fire HDX 8.9 4th gen.
Guys,
Sorry for noob question, how to mount system.new.dat (from update-kindle-22.5.4.1_user_541113320.bin)?
mount -o loop=/dev/loop0 system.new.dat /mnt
EXT4-fs (loop0): bad geometry: block count 393216 exceeds size of device (311922 blocks)

My 8.9 updated at last.
Installed 5.1.1 manually on HDX Saturn and Google play store afterwards. Much better experience than OS4. Cleaner look and settings and more mature.
The only loss I found so far that the ability for VPN networks has been completely removed. I do not understand why Amazon did this?

New OPT doesn't see Oxygen updates

Just received my OP2: great device! However, it's got 2.0.3 installed and doesn't see any updates... It says the latest software is installed... Already changed factory reset.
What can I do to make it find an update?
