Severe WiFi issues Please help! - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, on my ZTE Axon 7 A2017G, I'm having really bad WiFi issues.
I've attached some screenshots, but overall it seems like the WiFi keeps dropping out randomly.
My WiFi is not at fault here, I have a 30 Mbps connection and it has full range where I'm sitting, (5-10 metres from router) and there is no interference.
I do believe this to be a faulty phone, but if anyone has any suggestions please do help. I do still have this covered under warranty, so I can return the phone if needed to.
:good: :crying:
edit:
also for some extra information, the two arrows next to the WiFi icon are not always present whilst using the phone on WiFi, and when they are not present, the phone's apps will say no WiFi and if I check the settings app, it says under my network's name: Connected, no WiFi whilst there is full connection and I would have to forget my network and reconnect again.

I have an A2017U and it also has unreliable radios. My WiFi stats show the AP being weak and about 50m away. It suddenly dies and comes back saying it's a strong signal 4m away. Run a WiFi analyzer on the Axon 7 and another phone at the same time. The Axon 7 will show APs randomly fading out while the other phone shows steady signals. I recommend returning it under warranty. You might get another phone that dies less often and ZTE will lose a bit of money for not maintaining their flagship product.

Alright, thanks I will try the WiFi analyzer and return the phone under warranty.

So, I tried the WiFi analyzer with my zte axon 7 and a family member's galaxy s8 and both phones show around the same signals for the various APs and both phones randomly phase out APs at around the same time (probably due to weak connection, because its the neighbours WiFi) and so I'm really confused to what the problem is. @kevinmcmurtrie

My Axon 7 has the radios just drop dead. One common cause is that it wants to switch from 2.4 GHz to 5GHz shortly after waking up. It can roam fine but band switching kills the connection for about 10 seconds. Other drops are a total mystery. A WiFi analyzer shows APs randomly vanishing or muting for a while then coming back, with no relationship at all to real signal strength. Same goes for the cell radio. It loves dropping to a legacy EDGE tower when there's plenty of strong LTE signals around. Putting the phone in my pocket kills the cell data and it never comes back until I cycle airplane mode.
I've seen this on three Axon 7 phones. I have two and one was replaced, for a total of three. The second phone became stable when LineageOS was put on it - no drops, no vanishing APs, no EDGE, no missing cell data. I'd use only LineageOS if WiFi Calling was supported.

Nexus 4: radios behaving badly

The one thing that's keeping me from fully enjoying my new Nexus 4---hassles with radios, both wifi & cellular.
1) On my home wifi network on all devices except the Nexus 4 I see solid, constant download speeds of 25Mbps. My Nexus 4 consistently only gives me 4-6Mbps. If I disconnect/reconnect sometimes I can see speeds slightly higher than that, but only temporarily. This isn't generally a huge deal because 4-6Mbps is fast enough for most things on a phone, it just bugs me that every other device in the house gets 25Mbps.
2) Of bigger annoyance is my cellular data connection, it drops off multiple times per day. The cellular signal strength indicates full bars, along with the 'H' icon indicating I'm connected to T-Mobiles HSPA+ network. Voice still works fine but the data connection is dead--nothing will connect--Speedtest, maps, Google Search, Facebook, etc. This forces me to either turn on/off Airplane mode or reboot the phone completely to regain my cellular data connection. On my previous SGS2 I never experienced this issue. It drives me nuts to not be able to pull up a phone number, directions etc at the times I need it most.
Does anybody have any similar experiences or suggestions on how to remedy these issues?
Edit---FYI I'm fully stock but rooted. 4.2.1 update not yet applied.
1) Check APN settings and make sure your account is properly provisioned by calling T-Mo CSRs. I had a similar issue with my Nexus One back in the day that was fixed with a reboot after they reprovisioned my account.
2) Flash factory image, in case it was a bad flash of the radio. It happens.
3) If 1 & 2 fails, or you don't want to try #2, call the Nexus hotline and get yourself a replacement.

Called TMobile and had them reset my account, I'll keep an eye on it the next couple of days.
Right now I'm downloading a cached Google map via WiFi and it is slooooow.
I also notice on edge the signal is inconsistent.
Hi
The Wi-Fi issue is something happening to others, seems to be a driver bug.

Wifi connectivity is my biggest gripe. I'll step 6 feet away from my router and I lose a bar. A couple rooms away I fluctuate between 1 and 0 bars.

Did you ever find a cure for this? I am having the exact same issues on my O2UK Nexus 4, anytime I want to use the data connection its almost guaranteed not to work and involve reboots, Airplane mode on and off etc
Im having the same issues. My data just drops wifi and cellular. I dont get full signal wifi or cellular. I live in india and flashed the latest .54 which was released in india recently. I managed to at least get cellular data going but my strength still low and data drops still on both wifi and cellular. Its super frustrating. Any ideas?
try reflashing the OS on your phone and try changing the wifi channel on your router.
changing the channel on my wireless router really helped signal to all of my devices. there may be lots of interference on the channel you're on.

I may reflash OS but i just got the phone today so ill slow down a bit. I flashed the radio one would think that would be enough? Anyway I have many other devices on my wifi without an issue and i used wifi analyser and theres no overlap with other routers and i experience this on 2g 3g and wifi so it looks like some modem problem. Unfortunately the phone was bought 3 months ago in the States and im here in india so im kind of stuck
There are known issues with the Nexus 4 wifi speeds slowing for no apparent reason. Also, known issues with the LOS (loss of signal). You can find information and bug reports on both of these issues.

I dad see some threads reporting this issue. Unfortunately i dont see any solutions or resolved threads. Additionally people either have it they dont as i see it i cant see people witching sides. Its just a little frustrating. Any opinions on whether kernel swapping will help?
Did a full flash from scratch. No progress. Also i went to my friends place and signal was perfect for like 4 hrs straight but every other place ive been since has seen choppy signal.

Pretty bad. I ran a test a few weeks ago and I can go up to 450 feet from my router (old Linksys) without a problem, and after that it gets iffy, and finally disconnects at 500 feet. I am seeing an average of 20 Mbps on wifi. Now if I can only get my cellular connection (non-wifi) to go faster than 1 Mpbs max I would have a usable phone.
I have a slightly diff issue.
If I reboot my phone, I connect to my router no problem. If I turn wifi off (to save battery) and then turn it back on.... it shows my AP's as out of range.... but I do see my neighbours AP's. I also have an N10 with has no issues at all with wifi (and none of my other divises have issues either).
When I bought the N4 they seemed to be having an issue with it when setting it up.... but I was not paying close attention. I am wondering if I have a bad phone on top of the "normal" wifi issues that other are experiencing.
Think I will revert back to stock and swap it for another phone to see if I can at least just turn off / on the wifi rather then reboot to connect (how sad is that?)

**** UPDATE ****
I picked up a cheap belkin router and set it to AP mode.
My N4 has no issues at all with it. Connects when I want it to right away and is fast / solid connection.

D800, bad wifi, bluetooth connectivity

I recently just purchased a Razer Nabu x. I was totally excited to start using. Well, I thought it was defective, since it kept disconnecting. I tested it on a Nexus 4, however and it did not disconnect. I even downloaded a signal meter on both phones. The nexus 4 read nearly full bars when next to the smartband. My d800 read two bars next to it.
So, my bluetooth is screwed. What else is wrong? My WiFi. Where my girlfriend's phone (the nexus 4) can connect perfectly fine to our school's wifi network at nearly all times. Mine insists on being a chode about it.
It will say that the signal is Excellent. I click it to connect. Either a) nothing will happen or b) it will flash to 'connecting' for a split second, then return to saying 'saved.' It's also worth noting that after it says 'connecting' for a second, the signal usually drops to poor. It gets subpar signal in my room. Next to the router. Granted, it normally works fine on my home wifi, and i can understand that the school's wifi is probably a little harder to connect to, but it's significantly worse than my old phone (which is my girlfriend's current phone, the nexus 4 I mentioned earlier)
I've installed a couple roms on my phone, and even on stock the wifi was a hassle and refused to connect. I'm currently running Resurrection Remix I purchased the phone used, with no information except that it had a clean ESN so I don't know of any damage that would have been done to it.
Has anyone ever had a similar issue with bluetooth/wifi? Just absolutely awful signal, reception, connectivity? if so, how did you fix it? And would it be possible to REPLACE the wifi/bluetooth antenna?

Poor wifi reception of ZUK Z1 vs Nexus 4

Hi,
My ZUK Z1 european version has just arrived and I am noticing that it cannot take the 5Hz wifi when there is some distance in between. If it does it, it disconnects in seconds. It does connect to the 2.4Hz g without too many problems (some times even not this one). If I put only 5Hz networks, the same happens. Sometimes it doesn't see the signal at all.
This doesn't happen when I am next to the router. So, since the 5Hz deteriorates more with distance (AFAIK) what I'm describing shouldn't be surprising. My doubts are because with the nexus 4 (Android, not cyanogen) it grabs the 5Hz without any problem at exactly the same long distance (2 thin walls, few furniture in between), and I find very unlikely that the wifi chip of the nexus 4 is superior than the one of the zuk z1.
UPDATE:
It is very strange. With the ZUK, in front of the router I get 110 Mbps (5Hz, n-only), when I move to the room in question I get 3-4 Mbps only, so about to be disconnected.
With the nexus 4 (same 5Hz connection obviously), I get 50 Mbps when I am in front of the router AND when I am in the problematic room. How is that possible?
If I test connecting to the 2.4Hz (b,g,n), the nexus 4 gives the same 40-50 Mbps no matter the distance. I have to go to a very "protected" room to see a drop to ~15 Mbps, again showing no difference between the two bands.
If I test with the zuk, it gives 20 Mbps, if I move to the very "protected" room, I see a drop down to 0.3 Mbps
So, it is like the wifi is much better if you're in front of the router, otherwise is significantly worse? Is that feasible? Can it be a software problem?
Hello! first of all excuse my bad english
I received today me ZUK 1 and im having the same trouble, its impossible to use wifi without problems when you are in a different room from router, and especially when you put the smartphone in horizontal position ,grab it with two hands and cover the superior part with your hand, when i do this i simply lost the connection even if im in front of router. I come from HTCmania, a spanish forum of smartphone and we are few people with the same problem and is very frustating that there is no solution and noboy in Lenovo or ZUK says nothing about this trouble.
Me too. Wifi is very very very bad if you hand is in the top (camera zone). Horizontal, vertical, it does not matter if you cover the area with his hand, zasss wifi dies.
Sorry my very bad english.
Same problem here
I have the same problem as described. I have not noticed if my hand position affects it. My OnePlus one and my Sony Xperia Z1 compact both manage to hold on to the wifi in my bedroom albeit less than full signal. The Zuk z1 just keeps dropping off and sometimes doesn't find the wifi.
Have anyone contacted Zuk about this? Mine was bought through Spanish eBay but seems to have been sent to Spain from Germany.
Following the thread for a solution as this problem is a definite dealbreaker.
Daniel
Uau, I've just tested it and while it is unrelated to the problem that I say (this is, the ZUK receives the 5Hz band very bad it seems) it is completely true. While doing a wifi test (Wi-Fi Deadspot app), connected to the 2.4Hz, from 55 Mbps if I put the hand over the top part of the mobile it drops to 30, if I put the hand in the middle part of the back zone it drops to <5Mbps!!
*Having it over a table doesn't make a difference for me.
UPDATE: The measurements from this app seem very variable, based on other comments it doesn't seem to be related to the software but to the ZUK. Now the 5Hz band gives excellent results from the room where before it couldn't even see the wifi.
So it does seem capable, but VERY unstable I guess. Is this hope for waiting a software-based solution? Or we should mark this phone as a wifi-less phone ...
(damn ~_~ they sure knew about this from the units sold in China)

2,4 ghz
Just checked and it turns out that my wifi is on 2,4 ghz. So I guess the conclusion is that the problem is unrelated to the frequency.
There are two problems:
Problem 1- Wifi drops when your hand is on the top of your phone, irrespective of the frequency
Problem 2- Wifi in the 5Hz is very unstable and/or much worse when compared with a nexus 4 phone (relevant provided it is an old phone), related to the frequency (or it seems so at least)

I didn't noticed anything before i read this and tried to put my hand on the upper part of the phone : my WiFi connection instantly shut down even if I had 3bars over 4... So yeah there's a real issue with the WiFi antenna here :S (first real drawback I have with this device...)
Apart from that, I owned a Nexus 4 too just before this device and I personally have a better WiFi reception on my Zuk Z1 (one more bar for both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands)
Does the same happen with ZUI os?
I also have a Wifi problem with the international version of Zuk Z1.
Testing the Wifi with the App "Wifi DeadSpot" in both the Zuk and a Oneplus 1, the results are:
2m far from the router:
OnePlus1: 38Mbps (GOOD)
Zuk Z1: 9Mbps (AVERAGE)
10m far from the router:
OnePlus1: 22Mbps (GOOD)
Zuk Z1: 0.45Mbps (POOR)
In both cases the phone is in vertical and without touching it (holding it near the camera apparently really makes Wifi coverage worst)
If the Zuk is in horizontal position, the Wifi signals is also worst: 0,5-1 Mbps at a 2m distance.
I tried resetting the Zuk to factory settings and the results are the same, so I don't think it's a software issue. Could be a manufacturing defect or just a cheap wifi chip?
Wifi on the ZUK Z1 is better than Note 4, S6, Xperia Z3+ and Mi Note.
On some positions I don't get Wifi, with the Z1 2/4.
Speed up to 50Mbit/s over 2.4GHz. With 5GHz about 120 Mbit/s. I don't need more.
Hello, I received my EU Z1 today and I'm coming from a Nexus 4 too. I don't have any trouble with 2.4ghz WIFI, the connection its perfect two stories under the router and I can say its as good if not better then the Nexus 4 holding it in any way. I think you got defective devices.
I hope your are right.
I'm considering buying this device. Would be great if other people could tell about their wifi reception.
Same problems here, with cyanogenos, didn´t test ZUI os.
I´ll posted the bugs on cyngn forum here: http://community.cyngn.com/t/some-m...lash-flashlight-poor-wifi-back-button-led/208
But not sure if its a software or hardware issue, i guess hw.
It's pretty random...
If i have the phone 3-4m from 2.4ghz router through a wall:
Keeping the Z1 in the same position, without touching it, WiFi reception varies from 2-4Mbps to 40Mbps (from test to test in Wi-Fi deadspot app). Can't predict when I get which speed. Mostly it's very low, though.
Disconnecting and reconnecting sometimes helps but mostly it doesn't. My old Huawei Y300 has a solid ~18Mbps when tested at the same spot.
Then again also the phone reception randomly drops from 3 bars to 1 to just go back up to 3 all within 1-2 seconds. (which might be unrelated but coincided with having higher Wi-Fi speeds)
Here's hoping for a software bug....
Cheers.

There is one thing that is rather consistent though:
Whenever the display turns off during the Deadspot test, WiFi drops e.g. from 40Mbps to ~8Mbps. I first observed it by chance and then switched off the display on purpose several times while the app was running...
In the WiFi settings it's set to always keep on, so that shouldn't be the issue...
@tuatara42
I think i noticed sth similar, i had map downloads for navigation, around 2gb of data, it was half done in a few minutes but when it gone into standby mode and i woke it up 10 minutes later it barely progressed, so that means the wifi must have been slower.
That gets me a bit of hope that it´s "just a software problem".
I just tested the speed right next to the router:
Same speed, no improvement, 1-4Mbps.
Full speed with the Y300.
Actually I'm pretty sure WiFi was much better in the beginning, before the latest COS updates...
COS could be part of the problem, with CynaogenMod on my old phone I have the same problem with wifi speeds when the screen is off.
I just did a rough test using Wi-Fi Deadspot. At about 7.5m, through four very solid brick walls, from my 2.4 Ghz router I got 32.49 Mbps with my Z1, and 27.74 Mbps with my old N4. So WiFi is fine for me.
Which COS12.1 version are you on?

Wifi keep changing to mobile data.

My wireless keep changing from wifi and mobile data. Is there any reason and how to fix this? My wifi is fast enough, and my location is near the modem. Thanks.
i notice something like this too maybe, while on wifi i keep seeing the 4G/3G sign with arrows showing up and then suddently disappear.
even though i didn't notice any data consumption on cellular data

I have finally received my Axon 7 and tested and compared the WiFi with my old phone which I ported to CM and had to fix WiFi issues for that phone.
I can assure you the Axon 7 is not worse but also not better in WiFi reception than other phones. (At least not as my old phone).
There is how ever one issue like when roaming WiFi cells. It will not seamlessly switch from one cell to the other. This is software related and can easily be fixed by tuneables for the driver.
If ZTE will not fix it... When CM comes it will be fixed for sure! Once I decide to keep the phone i will participate in CM development.

New phone, radio issues

Since getting this phone last week, I love it, except for 2 issues. First, the hotspot, after disabling it, still shows up on my laptop as an available connection, and when this happens, the battery drain is significant. This happened 2 nights ago, I had disabled the hotspot before going to bed, and battery drained from full charge to ~55% overnight.
I noticed this issue the first day I had it, and tried a factory reset. That did not resolve the issue.
Today, to add another wrinkle to the problem, bluetooth would not connect to any of my devices. I used the option to "Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth," which worked for the bluetooth, but not for the hotspot. I had to reboot the phone for that to work properly.
In some troubleshooting on the hotspot issue, when disabling the hotspot, my laptop will disconnect, but it still shows the hotspot from the phone as an available connection, though it can't connect at that moment. This problem isn't consistent, though it's happened at least twice.
I'm running the latest stock Essential software.
If anyone has had any experience with this issue, or has found a solution, please share your knowledge. Thanks!
I never had problems with BT when this was my primary phone.
What made me switch back to my Huawei Mate 9, was the signal issue I had with the Essential.
I mean everything on this phone worked PERFECT, but, using the straight talk sim (tracfone/at&t),
I had problems maintaining a signal at time, where I NEVER had signal problems before.

That's interesting. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with this phone being a universal carrier phone. I'm on Verizon, and this phone is perfect on signal strength. Since the Huawei is a GSM only phone, perhaps it works better with GSM carriers.
By the way, nice signature. I'm the co-host, AKA sideshow, for Armed Lutheran Radio.

Don't really know...it has the GSM bands that at&t uses, 2,4,5,17,30
I think it might be similar to when Apple slapped a metal cover on the back of their phones and
had signal issues. One of these days when I'm bored or snowed in, I might play around with seeing I
can get the back off and see if that changes anything.
I know its not what you wanna hear but try putting it on 3G mode only.
Where i live i get inconsistent or no signal if im in 4G mode from T-Mobile. If i travel south to a bigger city, i can run 4G all day long and no issues. If you get H+(3G) when you set it to 3G, then it might be a band/carrier issue with 4G in your area.
